When residents in an Idaho neighborhood need some time to unwind, they know the drill. The neighbors in Boise’s Bench neighborhood head over to the Ching family’s home, grab a leash, and take a goat for a walk. • Twitch is giving all users access to its discovery feed later this month

Twitch is giving all users access to its discovery feed later this month

Twitch has been testing a discovery feed for livestreams and Clips on mobile since last year, in hopes of giving users a new way to find new streamers to follow and, hence, spend more time on the platform. Now, the website has announced that it’s rolling out the feature to all users later this month. The feed will first appear as a new tab in the mobile app and will allow viewers to switch between a scrollable feed for livestreams and another one for Clips. Like their names imply, the live feed will show users broadcasts from people they already follow and ongoing streams from people they don’t based on their watch history. Meanwhile, the Clips feed will be filled with short snippets from live broadcasts.

Users will be able to join ongoing streams from the live feed by tapping on the streamers’ avatars to immediately go into theater mode. Twitch will also show when the streamer is live in the Clips feed, so viewers can check them out from there, as well. And just in case it isn’t clear, Twitch explained in its announcement that the discovery feed will only be aggregating streams and clips from the service and that creators cannot upload to it directly. In other words, getting highlighted on the feed is a game of chance, though featured Clips will be given priority over non-featured ones.

The discovery feed launching this month isn’t its final form, though. Some users might start seeing the feed as their actual home page sometime next month, which is what Twitch had in mind for the feature in the first place. In early March, company CEO Dan Clancy said the service is giving its mobile app its first major redesign in years and that the discovery feed will be its new landing page.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is back Thursday on Capitol Hill, offering to the Senate Banking Committee his second day of congressionally mandated testimony on the state of the economy and monetary policy.

In an appearance Wednesday before the House Financial Services Committee, the central bank chief reiterated that he expects interest rate cuts later this year but did not specify when. Instead, he said policy moves will depend on incoming data, and there isn’t enough evidence yet that inflation is headed back to the Fed’s 2% goal.

Along with hits overview, he faced questions from committee members largely focused on the proper calibration of monetary policy, as well as his views on proposed bank capital rules known as the Basel III Endgame.

The testimony is Powell’s last scheduled public appearance before the next Fed meeting on March 19-20.

  • SpaceX Starship’s second uncrewed launch ends in explosion

SpaceX Starship’s second uncrewed launch ends in explosion

SpaceX’s Starship Mars rocket and spacecraft launched for the second time early Saturday morning, making it through lift-off and a planned separation of the uncrewed ship and rocket booster before both ended up exploding.

The massive Starship rocket launched around 5:03 a.m. Pacific from SpaceX’s launch facility near Boca Chica, Texas. On a livestream of the launch, SpaceX employees tempered viewers’ expectations, warning that the company didn’t expect to recover any hardware for future re-flight from either rocket booster or launch, even in the best case scenario.

The stated goal, employees said, was to make it to separation of the rocket booster and the Starship craft.

The Hawthorne company has added a new, hot-stage separation system into the rocket, in which the rocket booster keeps a few engines burning while the spaceship ignites all of its engines to get more boost. Though it puts more pressure on the booster, the complicated procedure is intended to increase the carrying capacity for the ship.

About three minutes after lift-off, the booster and ship did successfully separate, but the booster broke apart shortly after. The Starship craft continued to ascend, but about nine minutes after lift-off, the company said it lost data from the craft.

The company said it believes the automated flight termination system on the ship was triggered “very late in the burn” as it headed over the Gulf of Mexico, said John Insprucker, a longtime SpaceX employee who frequently appears on the company’s livestream to give technical updates and explanations. The automated flight termination system is a safety mechanism embedded in the rocket’s software that destroys the vehicle if it senses that its course or performance is awry or unsafe.

Though the flight did not reach completion, company employees on the livestream called it “an incredibly successful day” that would yield data for future improvements.

It did mark progress compared with the last test seven months ago, which ended in an explosion a few minutes after lift-off, raining debris over the nearby area and destroying its launch pad.

That explosion, too, was triggered by the rocket’s autonomous flight termination system.

SpaceX said at the time that Starship started going off course during that flight due to a propellant leak in the rocket’s booster, which affected the main flight computer and resulted in a loss of communications. That led to the majority of the booster’s engines going out.

After that test flight, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered SpaceX to make fixes to the rocket, including redesigning its hardware to prevent leaks and fires. On Wednesday, the FAA said it authorized Starship’s second test flight. The company said it has put into place “leak mitigations” and improved its engine and rocket booster testing.

SpaceX also said it made “significant reinforcements” of the launch pad’s foundation and added a flame deflector intended to prevent future launch pad damage.

SpaceX Starship is poised for its launch attempt.

    (Scott Schilke / Associated Press)

Starship is key to SpaceX’s future business plans and the U.S.’s return to the moon. SpaceX is under contract with NASA to develop the Starship spacecraft into a lunar lander for NASA’s Artemis program.

The company also plans to eventually phase out its workhorse Falcon 9 rocket in favor of the much larger Starship, which it also envisions for use in missions to Mars.

SpaceX also intends to expand its Starlink broadband internet network through Starship launches, which will be able to carry many more satellites than the Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy rockets.

Lyn Alden: Our money is broken

This is the audio version of The Reason Livestream, which takes place every Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

“At its core, money is a ledger,” writes investment analyst Lyn Alden in her new book Broken Money: Why Our Financial System is Failing Us and How We Can Make it Better.

Zach Weissmueller spoke with Alden about her book, which is a true tour de force that lays out the history of money from its inception to present, takes you deep into the dueling schools of thought around money’s fundamental properties, offers a macro analysis of today’s global monetary and fiscal situation, and charts a path forward for transitioning the world to better, more sound money in the future. Can Milei still win in Argentina?

Javier Milei, the firebrand libertarian candidate for Argentina’s presidency, surprised the world with a first-place finish in the primaries this August. But in the presidential election this past weekend, he finished second behind Peronist candidate Sergio Massa, Argentina’s current economy minister. Neither candidate passed the threshold needed to become the next president, so they will have a head-to-head rematch on November 19.

Does Milei still have a chance? Why did Argentina’s markets falter after Milei came out ahead this summer? And why are Massa’s allies in the government handing out money to voters?

  • Trump’s Georgia Trial Will Be Livestreamed, Judge Rules

Trump’s Georgia Trial Will Be Livestreamed, Judge Rules

All court proceedings related to former President Donald Trump’s election interference case in Georgia will be livestreamed and available for broadcast, a judge ruled on Thursday.

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the mammoth case against Trump and 18 co-defendants, said the use of recording equipment would not “disrupt the administration of justice.” All hearings and trials will be broadcast on the court’s YouTube channel, and members of the media will be allowed to use their computers and phones inside the courtroom as long as they do not record the trial. The press pool will be allowed to film for any television, radio or photography needs.

The ruling could change, and it would not apply should any parts of the case be moved to federal court, as several defendants have requested.

Still, the decision is notable amid Trump’s multiple indictments.

Federal trials largely bar the use of recording or photography equipment in courtrooms — hence the use of courtroom sketches — but Georgia prioritizes transparency in its legal proceedings. A 2018 order from the state’s Supreme Court noted “open courtrooms are an indispensable element of an effective and respected judicial system.”

“It is the policy of Georgia’s courts to promote access to and understanding of court proceedings, not only by the participants in them, but also by the general public and by news media who will report on the proceedings to the public,” the order read.

Trump became the first president to have a mug shot taken when he was arrested earlier this month on multiple charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. County law enforcement officials had insisted he would not be given special treatment.

The former president pleaded not guilty on Thursday to all charges and waived his arraignment.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been firm in her desire to see all 19 defendants tried at the same time, although some have requested a speedy trial, which could throw a wrench in those plans.

[The stream is slated to start at 11 a.m. ET. Please refresh the page if you do not see a player above at that time.]

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks Friday at the “Perspectives on Monetary Policy” panel at the Thomas Laubach Research Conference the central bank is hosting in Washington, D.C.

The remarks come with markets suddenly divided on where the Fed goes from here. Market pricing Friday morning indicated about a 35% probability the Fed might approve another interest rate hike when it meets in June, according to the CME Group.

Recent data has indicated a resilient economy and labor market and inflation that, while abating from its highs of 2022, still is well above the Fed’s 2% target.

In recent days, regional presidents Lorie Logan of Dallas and Loretta Mester of Cleveland have indicated a stronger inclination to raise, while Austan Goolsbee of Chicago and Raphael Bostic of Atlanta have backed a more cautious approach.

The Fed next week will release minutes from its meeting earlier in May at which it approved its 10th interest rate hike since March 2022.

Twitter Rips Into Elon Musk for Poor-Quality Video | Entrepreneur

Twitter users and haters alike have had no problem airing their grievances about the changes that have come to the platform since Tesla CEO Elon Musk took over late last year.

Though Musk stands by his claims that the sweeping changes he’s made, such as removing legacy blue checkmarks for verified profiles and allowing Twitter Blue subscribers to edit their Tweets after they’ve been posted, are improvements for the better, he’s now being roasted for seemingly taking a step backward with Twitter’s newest livestreaming feature.

Related: Elon Musk Is Forcing Twitter Blue Verification on Certain People

The billionaire tested the new feature on Wednesday by broadcasting a livestream to his 138 million Twitter followers.

However, users quickly noticed that the stream was pixelated and low-resolution throughout the entirety of the 4-minute and 26-second live video.

“We’re just testing the live video feature so we can see if it works, and we can modify it accordingly,” Musk says during the stream.

He and another Twitter employee confirm in the video that the code they’re using to power the livestream comes from the 2015 code for Periscope, a livestreaming app that was acquired by Twitter before its official independent launch and was discontinued in 2021.

Musk’s stream reached a peak of roughly 150,000 live viewers before the video crashed and ended, though the clip, which now lives on his Twitter profile, has since been viewed more than 9.2 million times.

Many Twitter users reposted Musk’s stream and lamented the poor quality of the video.

Musk has not further elaborated on his plans for livestreaming on the app.

“One Friday afternoon in middle school, I got called into my principal’s office. When I walked in, there were a few cops waiting for me and no one looked too happy to see me. Earlier that day, a friend and I thought it would be a good idea to rob our classmates with a BB gun. We were just playing around, but our classmates didn’t think it was too funny.”

This is the beginning of Rohan Brown’s story, an entrepreneur whose journey started when he was arrested when he was just 12 years old. He says that this event forever changed the course of his life, which he details in compelling and inspiring episodes of his show My Stories, which you can find streaming free on EntrepreneurTV right now.
