  • 42 Dugg and Lil Baby make special appearances on Playboi Carti’s ‘Antagonist’ tour – Detroit Metro Times

    Playboi Carti brought his “Antagonist” tour to Little Caesars Arena on Halloween night. Detroit was the 15th scheduled stop for the 28-city tour. The Atlanta-born emcee is no stranger to Detroit as he recently opened up for the Weeknd’s “After Hours till Dawn Tour” this past May at Ford Field. 

    The night started promptly at 7 p.m. as his Opium labelmate Apollo Red kicked things off with a 20-minute set followed by Homixide Gang, Destroy Lonely, and Ken Carson. All four sets were energetic and they immediately induced a mosh pit on LCA’s main floor. Playboi Carti took the stage at 9:50 p.m. rapping “Pop Out,” the opening track from his third studio album, Music which was released on March 14.

    Playboi Carti has embraced a darker level of visual aesthetics lately. He’s known for always wearing black, donning a white a mask or face paint. This night was no different and the fact that it was Halloween punctuated such. Many fans wore all black outfits, white face paint, and even Halloween costumes.

    Carti’s stage was two stories high and he was constantly surrounded with a crew of hype men who also had on white masks. There were two pickup trucks on each end of the floor used as props. The stage lighting was never directed on him (leaving him in the shadows) and the multiple fog machines kept him hidden throughout the entire performance. Although this was the intended effect, it didn’t make for the best viewing experience. 

    Carti, a former Soundcloud rapper whose music is full of minimalistic rhyme schemes, is more about generating an addictive vibe rather than being a rapper’s rapper. He has an abstract ad lib style and utilizes spacy beats. He’s built up a cult following over the years and his studio albums Die Lit and Whole Lotta Red have been certified gold, and his 2017 self-titled mixtape went certified platinum.

    The night was loud and intense as Carti performed for 90 minutes with no breaks. In fact the night felt like one big musical montage with each song seamlessly transitioning into another song and Carti just kept going, going, and going. 

    He only broke up the flow of the night once, and that was to bring out Detroiter 42 Dugg who performed “We Paid.” He also brought out his fellow Atlanta native Lil Baby who performed a song as well.

    Outside of screaming “What up Doe” at the beginning of his set Carti didn’t provide much small talk. To the crowd’s delight he went through nearly two dozen songs in total for almost two hours. He performed most of his Music albums including songs like “Crank,” “Cocaine Nose,” and “Charge Dem Hoes a Fee.” He also performed others that included “Fein,” “Timeless,” and closed the night out by walking around LCA performing “24 Songs.”

  • Hotel CEO accused of sexually assaulting manager at Justin Timberlake concert in Detroit

    A former hotel manager has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Amerilodge Group CEO Asad Malik of sexually harassing and assaulting her during a company outing to a Justin Timberlake concert in Detroit earlier this year, and then retaliating against her when she reported the incident.

    Stephanie Starling, who managed the Courtyard Marriott in Bay City, alleges Malik groped her and tried to force a kiss during the Feb. 20 concert at Little Caesars Arena.

    While in the arena’s concession area, Malik told Starling that he wanted to kiss her and that he “bet it would be a good kiss too,” according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

    “Probably later tonight,” he added, saying he was “just looking at her lips” and thinking about the kiss, the lawsuit alleges.

    Starling says Malik slid into a booth beside her and put his hands under her thigh and onto her butt.

    Starling “was noticeably trembling in fear and her hand was shaking as she tried to eat,” the lawsuit states.

    Starling fled to the bathroom with a coworker and avoided Malik during most of the concert. Afterward, she says Malik drove her to a dark area near a hotel and told her, “Time for that kiss,” according to the lawsuit. When she refused, Malik allegedly grew agitated and asked, “What do you mean you CAN’T?”

    She threatened to walk back to the hotel in the snow if he didn’t return her, and Malik eventually relented, according to the lawsuit. Starling’s boyfriend drove from Bay City to pick her up.

    Starling “cried the entire ride home and was unable to work the next day,” the lawsuit states.

    Amerilodge Group is based in Bloomfield Hills and manages, operates, and owns hotels in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio under the brands Hilton, Marriott, and InterContinental Hotel Group.

    The lawsuit was filed by Jack W. Schulz of Schulz Ghannam PLLC.

    Starling reported Malik’s behavior to Amerilodge’s human resources director two days later. She was told the incident would be investigated confidentially by a neutral third party. Instead, the lawsuit alleges, the lawsuit was conducted by Amerilodge’s own defense attorneys and amounted to “a complete sham.”

    The complaint says coworkers openly discussed her allegations despite assurances of confidentiality at work. On March 12, Starling’s company email was cut off after she told a supervisor she was overwhelmed by stress from the incident but had no plans to resign.

    The following day, Amerilodge sent her an email saying it was “upholding [her] resignation.”

    But, according to the lawsuit, “Starling never resigned.”

    Instead, “she was terminated,” the complaint states.

    On April 1, she was told investigators could not substantiate her claims and was offered money to waive her rights against Malik and Amerilodge, which she rejected. The law firm that carried out the investigation later represented Amerilodge in her Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filing, the lawsuit states.

    Starling alleges sexual harassment, assault, battery, retaliation, and intentional infliction of emotional stress. She also contends other women had made similar allegations against Malik but were “silenced” by the company.

    Schulz wrote in the complaint that Amerilodge “made a conscious effort to silence these women in an effort to protect a predator rather than to assure this horrendous conduct ends.”

    Metro Times left a message for Amerilodge Group and is awaiting a response.

    Everything about Missy Elliott’s “Out of this World Tour” felt like an anomaly. It’s an anomaly that a four-time Grammy Awards winner who’s sold over 40 million records would be headlining her first arena tour since debuting 27 years ago. It’s also an anomaly that the openers — Timbaland, Busta Rhymes, and Ciara — are three music legends in their own rights with multiple platinum plaques hanging on their walls.

    But yet here we are.

    Timbaland, who’s more known for his production work with some of music’s biggest stars, hit the stage first. With his son Demetrius as his DJ, Timbaland took the crowd through his hits with Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, and Detroit’s late Aaliyah, including “One in a Million,” Are You That Somebody?,” and “Try Again.”

    Next up was Busta Rhymes, who performed everything from his breakout verse on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario” to “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and “I Know What You Want.” The 52-year-old emcee also took time to pay homage to the late, legendary Detroit producer J Dilla, telling the crowd, “He’s produced a track on every album I’ve put out.”

    Ciara batted cleanup as seven dancers joined her to give a thrilling performance on an awkwardly cool slanted slab stage. Her set had main act energy and included hits “Oh,” “Goodies,”, and “Level Up.”

    Missy Elliott’s set started with monitors full of visuals that fit right at the crossroads of an ’80s George Clinton concert and a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. This was going to be a fast-paced intergalactic ride, and it was time for the audience to buckle up. She walked on the stage dressed in a glittery spacesuit performing the bass-heavy “Throw it Back” to the cheers of crowds (many of which were dressed like Missy). Songs “Cool Off” and “Sock It 2 Me” followed, and it seemed like she had a different digital backdrop and wardrobe change for every song. There were laser lights, pyrotechnics, and more than 20 dancers who sometimes dressed like astronauts and other times like medieval Power Rangers. One dancer dressed in an all-black outfit holding an umbrella gave the perfect routine for Missy’s mega hit, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” Missy also boarded a platform that hovered around Little Caesars Arena and performed “Gossip Folks,” there were breakdancers featured that were better than anything seen at the Olympics, and she jogged a lap around the entire main floor rapping “Work It.”

    Her 70-minute set moved so fast it was hard to catch a breath. It was a beautiful futuristic layered body of music and visuals all connected perfectly. Yes, she was taking the crowd through her greatest hits but in a much different way than most artists do. Other than a shout out to Aaliyah and hugs with disabled fans, Missy stayed on script. The night finished with her bringing out Timbaland to perform “Up Jumps Da’ Boogie,” then Busta to perform, “Touch It,” and finally Ciara to perform, “Lose Control.”

    Elliott, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, has nothing to prove as her accomplishments have been cemented for years. With this tour she’s raised the bar on the kind of experience hip-hop acts — and especially legacy acts — can offer and has pushed hip-hop’s creativity forward even more.

    Gen Z icon Billie Eilish is taking on the world for her upcoming “Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour” set for North America, Europe, and Australia. The first week includes a stop at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on October 7.

    The tour announcement follows the news earlier this month of the artist’s upcoming third studio album Hit Me Hard and Soft, set to be released on May 17. Eilish says she is releasing no singles for the 10-track LP, as she wants people to hear it as a cohesive project.

    The singer-songwriter told Rolling Stone that the new album will be more reminiscent of her debut When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, with dark, depressive undertones that match her black hair and eccentric style.

    “I feel like this album is me,” she said. “It feels like my youth.”

    Many fans have been talking about the Rolling Stone article on social media, as the young musician shares A LOT, including details about her masturbation routine and her love for women. She talks about how she wrote the track “Lunch” partially before and partially after her first sexual experience with a girl.

    “I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand — until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina,” she expressed.

    We love the honesty, and we’re ready for Eilish to hit us hard and soft with emotions through the new album next month, and at the Detroit show in the fall.

    Hip-hop heavyweight Missy Elliott has announced her first-ever headline tour, which includes a Motor City stop.

    “OUT OF THIS WORLD — The Missy Elliott Experience” also includes Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and longtime collaborator Timbaland, and is set for Thursday, Aug. 15 at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena.

    “This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts,’” Elliot said in a statement. “Being the FIRST female Hip Hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour. Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family!     Elliott has also collaborated with director Dave Meyers (“Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch”) for a flashy cyberpunk tour announcement video that looks like something out of The Matrix.

    In the ’90s, then-obscure producers Elliott and Timbaland found critical and commercial success producing One in a Million, the sophomore album by Detroit’s Aaliyah. The singer started working with them when she was 16, shortly after parting ways with producer R. Kelly, who is accused of sexually abusing her.

    The duo’s avant-garde approach helped take Aaliyah’s music to the next level.

    “At first, Tim and Missy were skeptical if I would like their work, but I thought it was tight, just ridiculous,” Aaliyah had said of working with Elliott and Timbaland. “Their sound was different and unique, and that’s what appealed to me … Before we got together, I talked to them on the phone and told them what I wanted. I said, ‘You guys know I have a street image, but there is a sexiness to it, and I want my songs to complement that’; I told them that before I even met them. Once I said that, I didn’t have to say anything else. Everything they brought me was the bomb.”

    R&B singer-songwriter Jhene Aiko just announced “The Magic Hour Tour,” her first headlining tour in five years, and she’s kicking it off on the right foot with an opening stop in Detroit.

    The show on Wednesday, June 19 is set for Little Caesars Arena at 7 p.m.

    Joining Aiko on the journey are R&B and rap queens Coi Leray, Tink, Umi, and Kiana Lede, although it’s yet to be revealed which openers will accompany her at which city or if they will all be performing throughout the entire tour.

    In a series of Instagram posts announcing the tour, Aiko also revealed a snippet of a new song that fans hope to soon hear in full. Her most recent release was the single “Sun/Son,” on January 5. The soothing, heartfelt track honors the child she welcomed in late 2022 alongside Detroit-born rapper Big Sean.

    Aside from a project of R&B sleep music for babies, Aiko hasn’t released a full-length album since Chilombo in 2020, so hopefully the tour and the new tracks mean a new LP is coming soon.

    The six-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter was last in Detroit to perform at the Mo Pop Festival in the summer of 2022, and Detroit fans have missed her ever since. So, what better way for Aiko and Detroiters to celebrate Juneteenth than with some great music in a great city?

    “The Magic Hour Tour” will span North America, with 26 stops in the U.S. and one in Toronto, ending in Columbus, Ohio on Aug. 22.

    Presale tickets go on sale starting Wednesday, March 27 at 10 a.m., while tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 29 at 10 a.m.

    The Hot Girl Summer Tour is Megan Thee Stallion’s first-ever headlining tour across the globe and we’ve been waiting patiently for this day since 2020 when “Savage” kept us hype during the pandemic.

    The international run kicks off on May 14 in Minneapolis and stops in Detroit, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Las Vegas, and more before hopping across the pond to Scotland, England, France, Germany, and Ireland.

    The tour announcement comes on the heels of Thee Stallion’s latest single “HISS” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February. It also became the first-ever solo female rap song to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, giving Megan the record for the biggest first week for a solo female rap song in history.

    It’s the second track released via Megan’s independent music and entertainment entity Hot Girl Productions following her deeply personal track “Cobra” in November of 2023.
