  • Dakota Johnson Wore a Thong-Baring Sheer Dress to the SNL After Party

Dakota Johnson Wore a Thong-Baring Sheer Dress to the SNL After Party

As if her Saturday Night Live promo images weren’t chic enough—with especially note-worthy inclusions being an Alessandra Rich catsuit made entirely of lace and a Khaite bodysuit styled with just tights and a giant feather coat—this week’s host Dakota Johnson showed up to the after party in the most perfect sheer, hand-beaded vintage Alaïa gown, like, ever

The dress, which was designed by the late founder of the house Azzedine Alaïa and included in his spring/summer 1996 collection, was sourced by Johnson’s longtime stylist Kate Young from Vintage Grace, a New York City–based designer-vintage business founded by Chandler Guttersen in 2021. It features short sleeves and sequin embellishments throughout, making it completely sheer and perfect for the occasion. On top, the Madame Web actress wore a feather Saint Laurent jacket, adding simple black pumps and a Jimmy Choo handbag to finish off the look.

  • Khaite’s the Goal—H&M’s the Budget: This Chic $27 Halter Dress Is All You Need

Khaite’s the Goal—H&M’s the Budget: This Chic $27 Halter Dress Is All You Need

I have an obsessive personality, which can, like most things, be a good thing or a bad thing. It’s a good thing when it comes to cleaning, editing, or washing my face at night no matter how late it is. It’s a bad thing, though, when I find something that I desperately want that I simply cannot afford. I’ll think about said item day and night, stalking sales and resale sites until my screen time is up 500%.

Here’s a perfect example: Last February, Khaite held a runway show in SoHo, where the brand debuted a high-neck halter dress in a fitted, ribbed fabric that came to the model’s lower shins. It was perfectly sculpted, and the neckline epitomized elegance and refinement. I zeroed in on the dress, feasting over its every thread and waiting patiently until it became available. When it did, I immediately started saving. But with life comes expenses, and given the dress’s lofty price tag, I still haven’t quite been able to give it a home in my closet.

‘Tis the season! For many, this period marks the beginning of the transition into winter, but for the fashion set, it’s something else entirely. Late November marks the start of two mind-consuming matters: holiday parties and, more importantly, sale season. While most may be worrying about finding the perfect winter staples or gift ideas for loved ones, fashion people are searching for the perfect frocks for their jam-packed calendars. Frankly, I don’t blame them. One of the best things about this time of year isn’t necessarily being able to bust out the bigger coats. It’s finding an incredible item with the price marked down.

Sale season is our Super Bowl, okay! It’s why we’ll spend hours scrolling through the sale sections of our favorite retailers in search of the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. While there’s no shortage of sales to shop this year, there was one, in particular, I was waiting for with bated breath: Reformation. You see, anyone in the know is well aware that this brand has some of the prettiest party dresses on the market, so anytime there’s a sale, you have to stock up. Luckily, the brand’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales just started. Running from November 22 to November 27, Reformation is offering 25% off everythingyes, everything

For those with a stacked calendar this holiday season, you don’t want to sleep on this sale, as it has the perfect pieces for every occasion, including a winter wedding, a cocktail event, or even a gala. But what exact pieces should you be shopping for? In an effort to help you, I rounded up the 35 prettiest dresses from Reformation, which are all on sale right now. • If Your Vibe Is Bottega Veneta But Your Budget Is H&M, This $75 Dress Is a Must

If Your Vibe Is Bottega Veneta But Your Budget Is H&M, This $75 Dress Is a Must

If you speak to any fashion editor about the dresses on their current wish list, they’ll likely bring up some iteration of a halter-neck midi dress. The style has been gaining momentum for a while now, in large part due to Matthieu Blazy’s Bottega Veneta collections, which have included the silhouette in a variety of colors and fabrications. Nipped-in waists, bubble hems, fringe details, and voluminous skirts are also features of his halter-neck frocks. Of course, an off-the-runway Bottega Veneta dress isn’t exactly within everyone’s budgets, and with the dress style in question trending right now, there isn’t a ton of time to save up. Fortunately, I just stumbled upon a $75 alt that checks off similar trend boxes without the rather large investment.

The dress in question comes courtesy of H&M’s latest fall drop and is a black V-neck halter dress with an A-line shape and a fringed jacquard-pattern skirt. Did I mention that it’s $75 and fully stocked? There’s only one catch that I can think of, and that’s the high likelihood of it selling out as soon as the masses find it hidden in the brand’s nearly 1000-item new-arrivals section. That’s why I made it extra easy to snag by linking straight to the dress below. You’re welcome.

Scroll down to shop the frock you genuinely need if Bottega Veneta is your vibe but H&M is your budget.

  • I’m Calling It—This J.Crew LBD Will Be at Every Holiday Party From Now Until ’24

I’m Calling It—This J.Crew LBD Will Be at Every Holiday Party From Now Until ’24

As much as I’d like to pretend that it’s still summer, the season’s come to a close once again, and now, it’s time to face the fact that the holidays are approaching at lightning speed. If you want to be more prepared than I usually am when they come around, it’s pivotal that you get started on your gift shopping and outfit shopping too. Fortunately for you and me both, I just stumbled upon what’ll go down in the history books as 2023’s ultimate holiday dress. It’s an LBD so perfect and versatile that there’s no reason I can think of for it not to go completely viral.

The dress in question caught my eye this morning as I was scrolling through the latest drop from J.Crew, which is full of holiday-ready apparel, shoes, and accessories in fabrics like duchess satin, velvet, and tweed. A red, gold, silver, and black color palette really drives the theme home. Of all the hundreds of new arrivals I dug through, the item I fell hardest for was an off-the-shoulder jersey-knit maxi dress with long sleeves and a body-hugging silhouette that could just as easily be worn to a lunch date with the right shoes and bag as it could a black-tie gala. As an added bonus, the off-the-shoulder touch places it right at the top of both fall’s and winter’s trend lists, with everyone from Meghan Markle to Elsa Hosk donning the look and brands such as Khaite, Helsa, The Row, Jacquemus, and Reformation all making it.

Below, see and shop the dress that I’m predicting a major presence of come Thanksgiving and the holidays that follow. While you’re at it, scroll through more of my favorite finds from J.Crew’s new collection

  • Pretty Dresses Are My Love Language—These 20 Are High on My List

Pretty Dresses Are My Love Language—These 20 Are High on My List

It’s no secret that I love dresses. Short, long, silk, linen, cashmere—I have an affinity for them all. You can catch me in a linen midi style at work, a cute mini for date night, or a satin gown at a party. In my opinion, a dress can never do you wrong—you just have to find the right one. I always turn to Nordstrom’s dress section because it has a breadth of options to choose from. Whether I’m looking for a specific color, fabric, or silhouette, I always manage to find exactly what I need. After browsing the retailer’s new-arrivals section, I narrowed down my search to include the perfect little black dress, a trendy red dress, and sweaterdresses for chilly weather. • The $89 Nordstrom Dress I Just Overnighted to Copy Laura Harrier’s NYFW LBD

The $89 Nordstrom Dress I Just Overnighted to Copy Laura Harrier’s NYFW LBD

New York Fashion Week always comes with a bevy of stylish outfit inspiration, whether it’s coming from editors, influencers, stylists, runway collections, or celebrities. Attendees and designers alike work for weeks and even months to perfect what’s displayed during the week-long event, so of course, the resulting ensembles are often a huge success. But sometimes, style during fashion week can err a bit on the overtop side. And since my style sways more minimal than maximal, I always appreciate when someone debuts an outfit that whispers instead of screams.

One such person is Laura Harrier, who attended a NYFW kick-off party for Fossil wearing a deep-V, polo-neck LBD that featured breast pockets and a maxi hemline with a gold chain necklace and black boots. The look is just the sort I talk endlessly about to my friends and coworkers, swooning over the timeless appeal and sexy yet sophisticated elegance of it all. Luckily, it didn’t take me long to find an $89 similarly polo-neck black dress from Nordstrom’s in-house label Open Edit, a brand every editor keeps in their back pocket, that gives off a near-exact vibe to Harrier’s. And with NYFW still very much going strong, I simply have to have it to wear, like, tomorrow. Shop the LBD I’m overnighting for my own fashion-week events and more gorgeous black dresses for fall below.

Apple Martin Just Wore an Updated Version of the Classic LBD

A handful of wardrobe staples never go out of style, but our favorite is definitely the little black dress. Recently, 19-year-old Apple Martin demonstrated how this iconic wardrobe workhorse can look fresh and modern while being the perfect thing to wear for almost any occasion.

Martin joined her mother, Gwyneth Paltrow, to celebrate Goop’s new beauty launch and Gucci’s gorgeous summer collection at her grandmother’s Amagansett home on Long Island, New York. Fashionable guests filled the lush green gardens wearing an array of summer soirée-worthy attire. But it was Martin who captured our attention with her sleek, simple strapless G.Label by Goop minidress, hoop earrings, and a Barbie-pink Gucci shoulder bag. When it comes to exquisite style, the “apple” doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Not sure what to wear to your next big event? Whether it’s a special celebration with loved ones or something slightly more formal, Martin’s 2023 interpretation of the little black dress is an easy and elegant option to have on hand. Nicole Kidman’s Ab-Baring Red Carpet Dress Brought the Drama

Nicole Kidman’s Saint Laurent gown is just the latest outfit to turn heads on this summer’s firey red carpets. The megastar stepped out for a special screening of her new Paramount+ show, Special Ops: Lioness, in an ab-bearing black gown, complete with sheer elbow-length gloves, pointy-toe sandals, and a rectangular clutch.

And, while not all of us have the super-impressive abs that Kidman worked to strengthen as part of her latest role, we can still crib a few style notes from this dramatic, A-list look that came together thanks to celebrity stylist Julia von Boehm, who Kidman has worked with for years.

Ahead, shop 12 gorgeous black gowns with a variety of cutouts that make it fun to show off a little skin at your next big event. Keep it simple with matching black accessories, or lean into the drama with mesh gloves and stiletto sandals like Kidman. When a dress looks this good, everything else just falls into place.

  • I’ve Lived in Paris for 8.5 Years—This Is the Dress French Women Always Wear

I’ve Lived in Paris for 8.5 Years—This Is the Dress French Women Always Wear

I’m a big advocate for the capsule wardrobe—an armoire filled with cherry-picked items that, to borrow from Marie Kondo, give me only joy when wearing them. Conscious shopping is something I’ve adopted too in the past eight and a half years since moving to Paris, and it’s also incidentally something I write about in my new book, Practising Parisienne: Lifestyle Secrets From the City of Lights, which is out now.

I’ve found that Parisians have a knack for picking forever pieces, are less likely to buy into fast fashion, and have a penchant for vintage and pre-loved clothing that they mix in with more up-to-date styles. They have certainly inspired my own style that’s a lot less try-hard than it used to be, and I now invest in pieces that last: elevated basics that I can wear again and again, such as a black blazer, a great pair of jeans, a trench coat, a shirt or a slip dress.

At first glance, you might think that a slinky, body-hugging slip dress should only be worn to elegant soirées, but its simple silhouette means it can actually be styled in a multitude of ways for different occasions, making it one of the most effortless and versatile pieces you can own. It can easily be dressed up or down and worn with everything, whatever the weather or your mood. Scroll down to see how I’ve styled one five ways.

The quintessential black dress has become a mainstay in most closets, as it should. Although iconic on its own, the LBD is also known for an effortless versatility that allows it to be styled in countless ways. This all-around piece is one with guaranteed longevity in your work and play wardrobes.

Many iconic moments are associated with simple black dresses including those of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Princess Diana. This has not changed over time yet the options for styling have proven it simultaneously timeless and trendy.

It’s time to reach back in your closet and pull forward the forgotten black dresses you own for a refresh – or snag an exciting new one. Below, I’ve handpicked seven fresh ways to style this staple, and, of course, the shopping list to assist.
