“I should really not be surprised that this lip mask is superior to any other I have tested in the past, given that I haven’t been disappointed by any Tatcha product I’ve ever tested. This mask works fast, though, leaving my lips flake-free almost as instantly as the jelly-like product touches my lips – it’s pretty impressive! I let it soak into my lips at night, but I also use it as a softening primer with my skin care in the mornings before applying gloss.” — Alessandra Foresto, managing editor.

    • Key ingredients: triisostearin (glycerin, fatty acids), squalane, vitamin E, allantoin.
    • Who it’s for: anyone with cracked lips.

Best Exfoliating: Ilia Lip Wrap Overnight Treatment

    Shanna Shipin

Why it’s worth it: Everything about Ilia’s Lip Wrap Overnight Treatment feels special, from its silky texture to the faintest tingle once the balm hits your lips. The formula includes papaya enzymes that gently slough away dry patches, plus hyaluronic acid and sea succulents that lock hydration in. Mango butter and coconut oil also moisturise, for noticeably smoother, softer, and more supple lips by morning – a perfect canvas for your favourite lipstick, oil, or gloss.

Tester feedback from Shopping Director Shanna Shipin

“Perennial dehydration, eczema, and constantly testing lip products give me grade-A chapped lips. Whenever my lips look shrivelled, I feel like my lines are deepening, or if there’s some peeling, this mask will re-hydrate, gently buff, and plump them up. Seriously, almost every time I use this overnight, I wake up with better lips. They’re soft, pillowy, and perfectly primed for whatever lippie I want to wear. Just note that there are some white exfoliating bits in the pot, so you may pick one up (and unknowingly leave it on your lips)!” — Shanna Shipin, Shopping Director.

    • Key ingredients: hyaluronic acid, papaya enzymes, mango butter, coconut oil, salicornia (sea succulent).
    • Who it’s for: anyone with dry, flaky lips.

Best for Layering: Then I Met You Honey Dew Lip Mask

Commerce Editor Sarah Han applying Then I Met You Honey Dew Lip Mask.

    Sarah Han

Why it’s worth it: There are many reasons we love this juicy Then I Met You Honey Dew Lip Mask. For starters, the convenient silicone tip makes for more hygienic application that doesn’t involve dipping your finger into a pot. Then, there’s the blend of hydrating ingredients, like honeydew melon, squalane, and avocado oil, alongside lactic acid, which gently exfoliates and dissolves dead skin cells the way a lip scrub would – sans mess.

The formula is buildable: A thin layer applied during the day adds a glossy finish, while a thicker layer at night conditions and softens lips while you sleep. Bonus? “The product has a mild fruity scent and flavour that doesn’t make my boyfriend go, ‘Ack!’ every time I kiss him,” senior news editor Nicola Dall’Asen says.

“My lips are a dry, chapped mess without constant care – meaning, lip balm prep before my usual lip stains in the morning and, perhaps more importantly, slathering on a healthy dose of lip mask as my final last nighttime skin-care step. Then I Met You’s Honey Dew Lip Mask works any time of the day, but I save it for nighttime and apply many layers for maximum masking benefits. Unlike other lip masks, I love that it contains a hit of lactic acid for that all-important exfoliation without the mess of a scrub (which I can never be bothered to use anyway!). The hydration of it all is a given: honeydew, squalane, avocado oil, honey, etc. Despite multiple layers, it doesn’t feel goopy or heavy, and my lips stay pillowy-soft and smooth come morning.” — Sarah Han, Commerce Editor.

    • Key ingredients: honeydew melon, squalane, honey, lactic acid.
    • Who it’s for: people who want a lightweight mask that can double as a daytime gloss.
    • Shade count: 1.
    • Fragrance free: no.

    More lip masks we love:

    • Kiehl’s Buttermask for Lips is our favourite fragrance-free option. Chock-full of nourishing ingredients like mango butter, coconut oil, and cocoa, with a creamy (not sticky!) consistency, it’s worth the splurge. Blanket your lips with a hefty coat of the stuff before bed and, come morning, you’ll wake up with supple, hydrated lips. Although it’s fragrance-free (making it ideal for sensitive skin types), the formula smells sweet, thanks in part to cocoa butter and vanilla extract.
    • Lawless Forget The Filler Overnight Lip Plumping Mask is the key to a plumper pout (as the name implies), which gradually boosts volume and nourishes very dry lips. While the brand’s beloved lip plumpers also contain MaxiLip, a peptide-packed complex, this formula doubles the amount – and packs ceramides, shea butter, and eight different forms and weights of hyaluronic acid.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a lip mask?

Lip masks are a great addition to any lip-care routine, but they’re especially helpful when bouts of seasonal dryness, chapping, and flaking hit. Chapped lips can develop anywhere, anytime, on anyone for a variety of reasons, including environmental factors (like sun damage), allergies, and lip-irritating habits like biting or picking the skin. Like a lip balm, these masks mainly rely on moisturizing ingredients (some of which we’ll dive into below). But masks have more concentrated formulas to provide more significant smoothing and plumping results in a shorter amount of time than a balm.

Which ingredients are found in lip masks?

Emollients like ceramides and fatty acids often do much of the heavy lifting in lip masks. But, as with face masks, you can find other active ingredients that promise more targeted results. For instance, you can find formulas that exfoliate (making quick work of flakes) and offer a subtle plumping effect, as well as others that boost collagen production to tackle fine lines around the mouth. Slather on these moisturising treatments while you sleep, commute to work, or whenever you need long-lasting hydration.

How we test and review products

When we test a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinise brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best lip masks, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors – along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

  • How to use a lip scrub for a pillowy pout

    [ad_1]

Anyone who loves wearing a matte lipstick knows the pitfalls of applying it over chapped lips. While we’re familiar with body scrubs, how to use a lip scrub isn’t always obvious, which is why we sometimes pick at flakey skin or rub the area with a wet flannel.

And yet, both approaches are too aggressive for our lips. The skin here is more fragile than you may think because it’s thinner than elsewhere on the body. Compared to the rest of your face, for example, which boasts up to 16 layers of skin, our lips only have 3 to 5 layers.

13 body scrubs that would make TLC reconsider the whole ‘no scrubs’ thing

Our lips also don’t have any oil-producing sebaceous glands, which means they are unable to naturally hydrate themselves. This is especially evident during the winter months when lips are more prone to chapping. Not to mention, sun damage and frequent licking can easily dry them out, too.

Lip scrubs can help as they they are designed to gently buff away rough skin. Much like a body scrub, they are typically powered by finely-milled sugar granules, “which are suspended in a nourishing oil to moisturise and give your skin more slip,” says makeup artist Zoe Taylor, who always carries a lip scrub in her kit bag.

What are the benefits of using a lip scrub?

There are several benefits to using a lip scrub. Cracked lips are like a road with bumpy potholes; a lip scrub can help to create a smooth base for your lipstick. It also improves the efficacy of your lip balm or oil as the hydrating ingredients are able to penetrate more deeply if there’s nothing nitty gritty in the way.

Then there are the massage movements you use to apply a lip scrub, which boost blood flow to the area, imparting a rosy pink hue to pale lips and making them look plumper. Applied a long-lasting lipstick? A lip scrub is non-negotiable for helping to remove any stubborn pigment for a squeaky clean surface.

  • This Ultra-Juicy $13 Lipgloss That Went Viral on TikTok ‘Stays on for Hours’

This Ultra-Juicy $13 Lipgloss That Went Viral on TikTok ‘Stays on for Hours’

    [ad_1]

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, StyleCaster may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

When I find a lip product I like, I stick to it until a new one crosses my path and proves it belongs in my regular rotation (prime example: my trusty Aquaphor). I’ve mostly been trying balms and oils as of late, but I’m hoping to up my gloss game. One candidate I’ve been eyeing thanks to TikTok is Kiko Milano’s 3d Hydra Lipgloss.

I first came across this product in a video posted by @musthavesxt, with the clip earning over 7.3 million views between October 6, 2023 and November 10, 2023. You can see the content creator trying on three shades of the Kiko Milano lipgloss, and the second option reminded me of the “cherry cola” trend that Kylie Jenner got everyone talking about and trying to recreate. Her pout looks ultra-juicy, and the subtle shimmer in the formula deserves a chef’s kiss.

Now you’re probably thinking about how there are a lot of lustrous glosses on the market right now (like the cult-fave Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb and TikTok-viral Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip), so what makes this $13 tube special? Let’s start with the 29 shade offerings that range from rosy pink to chestnut brown
. The selection also features various finishes, such as transparent, highly pigmented, pearlescent, and sparkly, so you have a tube for every type of makeup look and occasion.

Let’s follow that up with its softening and long-lasting formula that glides on with ease and doesn’t leave lips feeling sticky. To top it off, the wand applicator allows you to achieve a precise outline on the lips.

In terms of ingredients, the brand highlights bidens pilosa extract. According to Paula’s Choice, this ingredient is considered a plant-derived alternative to retinol

“It’s been shown to boost skin’s natural supply of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase, giving skin a better chance of withstanding and recovering from environmental aggressors. It also plays helpful roles in fading discolorations, strengthening skin’s barrier, soothing skin, and helping to control oil, the latter according to supplier studies,” per Paula’s Choice. This would explain the lipgloss’ ability to smooth the look of your pout.

A TikTok try-on clip is one thing, but we can’t forget to share what Amazon shoppers are saying about this product. Long story, short: They love it just as much as @musthavesxt.

“It definitely has a good consistency as opposed to some glosses that are just a sheer, light liquid that barely colors the lips. All in all, very pleased with this product and looking forward to trying other colors,” wrote one five-star reviewer. “I have to say it is just as high quality as glosses purchased in the department stores as I wear Chanel, Dior, Bobbi Brown, and many others.”

“As someone who has combination skin with an extremely oily T-zone, I have been changing all of my face products to non-comedogenic. I get blackheads and congested pores even around my lipline. I did a search on Amazon for non-comedogenic lip gloss and the Kiko Milano popped up. I have ordered six shades and tried them all,” explained another shopper. “The color range is so beautiful, the feel is wonderful, and they would also look great on top of lipstick. The 3D effect is gorgeous
. I absolutely love the way they look!”

Another wrote, “I literally use this to either give it a nice shine/plump boost, or when my lip is painfully split in the dry wintertime and no other lip balm works to heal it. Marvelous gloss!”

“This has quickly become my go-to lip gloss! I work in the fitness industry and wanted something that gives me nice color, lasting shine, and softness without looking too made up,” a different happy shopper commented. “Kiko knocks it out of the park. I love color 22- a raspberry shade, which stays on for hours and keeps my lips moist
and happy. I bought three the last time because I don’t [want] to run out.”

If these high praises aren’t enough to convince you to give KIKO Milano’s 3d Hydra Lipgloss a shot, its price tag sure will. $13 isn’t an unreasonable cost, especially when its popular counterparts typically cost upwards of $20.

Check out with a few shades of this gloss in your cart and it’ll quickly become your new ride-or-die lip product
that you stuff into your bathroom drawer, multiple bags, and car. Basically, you won’t be able to leave the house without it.

  • After a lip plumper that won’t burn or irritate your skin? These are the best options to consider

After a lip plumper that won’t burn or irritate your skin? These are the best options to consider

    [ad_1]

Lip plumpers are currently having as big a moment as the volume they promise to impart. From lip glosses to lip balms and even serum-like concoctions and lip pencils, there’s no shortage of impressive products on the market to choose from if you want a more pillowy pout.

The good news is that lip plumpers have evolved enough for them not to cause an unpleasant burning sensation or irritation. You’ll rarely find aggressive old-school ingredients such as cayenne pepper or cinnamon in newer formulas, and even those that still lean on mint do so in a much more subtle, skin-friendly way.

Hyaluronic acid is the ingredient du jour, making lip plumpers moisturising, gentle and effective, as well as suitable for dry, tender skin. Oils are also popular as a shiny finish reflects light, giving the illusion of fullness.

How you use lip plumpers has also moved on, too, allowing you to use them as a finishing touch or as a way to prep your lips for your favourite lipstick and lip liner.

To be clear, though, lip plumpers are not an alternative for lip fillers and it’s unlikely that you’ll get similar tumescent results. Although they’re designed to boost blood flow to the lips – usually via a gentle minty flavour – the result is temporary at best.

Even those powered by skincare ingredients, including collagen and peptides, make your lips appear slightly fuller over time but this is no way comparable to what you would get with cosmetic lip-enhancing procedures.

Best lip plumpers at a glance – our top picks:

    1. Best lip plumper overall: Huda Beauty Silk Balm Spicy Thermo Plumping Lip Balm, £22, Cult Beauty
    2. Best lip plumper for long-term results: Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Plumping Lip Gloss, WAS £23.50 NOW £19.97, Boots
    3. Best hydrating lip plumper: Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Hydrating and Plumping Gloss, £32, Sephora

Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Plumping Lip Gloss

It’s also worth noting that you shouldn’t feel like you need to make your lips appear bigger. But we also understand that when it comes to your body (or lips in this case), you are the only person whose opinion matters most. So if you want to embrace plumped-up lips – go for it.

To help you make a more informed decision, we’ve put together a full edit of all the best lip plumpers available. As committed beauty testers, we made sure to include a variety of different formulas that meet the needs of varying budgets and preferences, too. So, from best sellers to new releases, hopefully there will be something on this list for everyone.

This TikTok-Famous Beauty Brand Wants to Change Our Relationship With Makeup

When Fiona Chan first found herself stuck in Hong Kong as pandemic lockdowns began, she couldn’t have anticipated that within the next year, she’d found a beauty company or launch viral product. But that transformative and uncertain period proved to be a productive one for the entrepreneur, who introduced makeup company Youthforia — the fruits of those lockdown labors — in 2021.

Youthforia develops its products to be unique from anything else on the market, and that applies to both form and function: Its hero SKUs include color-changing “oil” blush (the aforementioned “viral product”) and lip glosses that magnetically fit together like Legos. But flashy, fun exteriors aside, the brand’s formulas are also rather game-changing. Youthforia positions itself at the intersection of color cosmetics and skin care, taking a more holistic approach that doesn’t put its users in the position of sacrificing the health of their complexions for the fleeting glory of a makeup look.
