Houston Concert Watch 9/17: Charley Crockett, Lil Wayne and More
According to Keith Richards’ son Marlon, the Rolling Stones may have an album of new material ready to go by the end of the year. As reported by Record Collector Magazine, the younger Richards indicates that the Stones have been working in the studio with producer Andrew Watt, who helmed their 2024 album Hackney Diamonds, a record that represented the band’s first collection of new material in almost two decades.
It is heartening to hear that the Stones still have some creative coal left in the furnace. Regardless of what the final product may sound like, the fact that these old guys are still making new music is more than impressive. The Stones who are still standing are raging against the dying light and exhibiting an admirable unwillingness to go gently into that good night.
Not that there is any indication that the Stones are about to individually or collectively keel over. I’m speaking metaphorically here. As we saw last year at NRG Stadium, they can still get the job done and even throw in a few surprises in the process. So I can’t wait to see what the lads come up with this time around.
And Marlon would seem to be an unimpeachable source, as he was part of the Stones Touring Party since he was an infant, later acting as his father’s majordomo and keeping some of the leeches away from Richards the senior. Nothing like being told to “fuck off” by an eight-year-old.
Ticket Alert
If you missed out on getting tickets for the West Texas Exiles at the Mucky Duck on Saturday, September 27, there is good news. A second (late) show has been added on the same night, but tickets are going fast.Singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Ben Kweller will perform at the Heights Theater on Tuesday, November 11, touring in support of his latest release, Cover the Mirrors. Tickets are on sale now.
It’s never too early to start planning for New Year’s Eve, I suppose, so if you don’t already have plans, a show for your consideration is Treaty Oak Revival at Toyota Center on Wednesday, December 31. Treaty Oak, “the rock band with a country accent,” has come a long way since getting its start as a cover band in Odessa around 2018. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
Mariah the Scientist (so named because she was actually studying to be a pediatric anesthesiologist before deciding on a career in music) will perform at the Bayou Music Center on Saturday, April 4. Presales are in progress, with the general ticket sale on Friday.
Concerts This Week
Man, what a week for shows in Houston. We will begin with Samantha Fish at the Heights Theater tonight. Fish is on tour in support of her latest album, Paper Doll, which exhibits her continued growth as a performer and songwriter. For more information, see the Houston Press interview with this blazing guitar player.
It may seem like a long time until we get to St. Patrick’s Day, but guess what? It’s only six months away! To celebrate (and why not?) Houston’s Celtic rockers the Blaggards will play a “Half Way to St. Paddy’s Day” show at Under the Volcano tonight. As an added inducement, the Volcano is offering half-price Guinness and Irish stew. ‘Cause Knowledge is Power: According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a blaggard is “a person, usually a man, who is not honest or fair and has no moral principles.”
There are a couple of big shows at Toyota Center this week, the first being a concert from singer-songwriter Benson Boone on Thursday. Boone made some serious noise on Tik Tok in 2021, racking up 1.7 million views before signing a fat record deal. On Saturday, Toyota Center will welcome chanteuse Laufey (pronounced LAY-vay), who cites Frederic Chopin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Chet Baker as some of her primary musical influences. Not too shabby.
Groundbreaking rapper Lil Wayne will perform at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Thursday. How much of a badass is Lil Wayne? His hometown of New Orleans declared in 2024 that “Lil Wayne Day” will be celebrated each year on February 6 and 7.
Country mega-star Lainey Wilson is also at the Pavilion this week, performing on Saturday. Wilson was raised in Baskin, LA, where she grew up on a musical diet of Buck Owens and Glen Campbell, demonstrating that her parents brought her up right. On Sunday at the Pavilion, it’s an intriguing double bill featuring Leon Bridges and Charley Crockett, two artists who are both traditionalists in their respective genres (R&B and country) and both spent time forging their careers in Texas.
Jim Lauderdale is well-known as a songwriter, having penned tunes recorded by George Strait, Elvis Costello, the Chicks, Vince Gill and Patty Loveless. But let’s not forget that he is a most engaging performer in his own right. Catch his act on Tuesday at the Mucky Duck.

Super Bowl Halftime Producer Backs Jay-Z Amid Uproar Over Kendrick Lamar Headlining 2025 Show
In the last week, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne have been at the center of conversations surrounding the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime show. Fans, celebrities, and even Tunechi have shared their disappointment with Wayne not being the headliner of the New Orleans gig. Jay-Z’s name and role with the NFL have also been a part of the conversation. Now, the halftime show’s producer, Jesse Collins, has publicly supported Jay’s decision-making.

Super Bowl Halftime Show Producer Backs Jay-Z & Kendrick Lamar
In a profile piece released on Monday (Sept. 16) by Variety, Jesse Collins opened up about the halftime show reactions. He notably mentioned Jay-Z and Kendrick, showing them love for a show he predicts will be a hit.
According to the outlet, Collins has been an executive producer of the SB show since 2021. He joined the spectacle’s production team nearly two years after Jay and Roc Nation signed on to consult on the league’s halftime headliners in August 2019. Jesse confirmed that Jay-Z calls the plays, and he supports them, including K. Dot’s upcoming performance.
“It’s a decision that Jay makes,” Collins told Variety. “Since we’ve been on board with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing. He’s always picked right!”
Additionally, Jesse Collins addressed Wayne and his fans’ disappointment in the headliner pick. He asserted that there’s no agenda against the ‘Lollipop’ superstar and that Kendrick will eat the stage up!
“We love Wayne,” Collins reportedly said. “There’s always Vegas odds on who’s going to get to perform it. But I think we’re going to do an amazing show with Kendrick, and I think everybody’s going to love the halftime show. I know Kendrick is going to work exceptionally hard to deliver an amazing show.”
Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj seemed to find a kii in Jeese’s comments to Variety. The ‘Pink Friday 2’ artist dropped a laughing emoji in reaction to an X post featuring what Collins said.

Rundown Of The Mixed Reactions To Super Bowl Show Headliner
As suggested, folks have been divided on the selected headliner for the 2025 gig for over a week. Some, like Master P and Nas, have celebrated Kendrick and anticipated his performance. Meanwhile, others, like Nicki Minaj, Birdman, and Wayne’s manager, have taken Wayne’s lack of inclusion in the show as a dismissal of his legacy. As mentioned, even Wayne expressed his disappointment with not receiving the opportunity.
The NOLA native said not being chosen as the headliner “hurt a whole lot.” Furthermore, he blamed himself for not being “mentally prepared” to be let down. However, Lil Wayne didn’t directly name-drop Kendrick in his message.
“I thought that nothing was better than that spot, and that stage and that platform in my city. So that hurt, hurt a whole lot. But y’all are f***ing amazing. It made me feel like sh*t not getting this opportunity, and when I felt like sh*t, you guys reminded me that I ain’t sh*t without y’all.”
Kendrick Lamar has yet to openly comment on the mixed reactions to his secured gig. His fanbase seems to think he’s still focused on pressing his foot into Drake’s neck. Last week, he released an untitled track, expressing disgust with the state of the culture and music and affirming his refusal to reconcile.

New Releases We Are Streaming This September
September is finally here, which means we’ve got tons of new music to listen to! From full-length albums to singles and EPs, our fall playlists are getting longer and longer every week. We’ve pulled just a few favorites from the queue to share with you (we know you’ll love them just as much as we do), so get cozy honeybees! It’s time to start September off on the right musical note.
Joe P’s Garden State Vampire
You are crazy if you thought this album wasn’t going to make our list! We’re screaming bloody murder for Joe P because he’s our vampire crush wish come true 🩸. New Jersey may just be that girl. So many influential musicians have come from NJ like Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, and now Joe P! We are so excited to watch his fame grow and grow.
From his latest album, Garden State Vampire, Joe P explores themes of nostalgia, feeling like you don’t belong, and learning how to love yourself.
One of the reasons I named the album Garden State Vampire is that I really thrive in being in a place that no one pays much attention to, instead of living in Nashville or L.A. or New York like a lot of people in the music business. It’s kind of nice to feel like I’m alone on a different planet, where the only thing that matters is staying true to whatever these songs want to be.
Joe P stated in a press release
Check out the music video for one of our favorite tracks, ‘Violet.’
You can catch Joe P live at Sea.Hear.Now in his home state of New Jersey or on his other world tour dates for the rest of 2024.

We will ride for Jessie and her music forever! Jessie knows how to curate the perfect vibes for every season. This duo is cooking up some heat in the kitchen! BREAD is an album full of every song you could ever need in a playlist. The love songs, the bangers, and the chill ones that every music lover would deem essential. Our faves are ‘Spiral,’ ‘Perfect Someone,’ and, of course, ‘Throw Some A**.’
The BREAD world is vivid – a celebration of life and sensuality intended to give the listener energy, just like carbs. Bread is also something people all around the world use to connect, gather and share. We’re reminded that it feels amazing to lose your inhibitions, feel energized and dance. The creative thread throughout BREAD explores togetherness, the magic of the Brazilian essence, which the music is inspired by, as well as a playful surrealism that says: live life to the fullest, eat all the BREAD, and BE REALLY ENERGETIC AND DANCE.
