  • The Themes That Will Define Bitcoin In 2023

The Themes That Will Define Bitcoin In 2023

This is an opinion editorial by Stephan Livera, host of the “Stephan Livera Podcast” and managing director of Swan Bitcoin International.

As the 2022 chapter closes, it’s time to turn our eyes to what’s coming in 2023. Here are some themes I’m seeing for Bitcoin in 2023.

    Regulatory Overreach

The Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) Travel Rule is forcing exchanges and bitcoin service providers to document and share ever-more information about customer transactions. We are seeing politicians such as Elizabeth Warren publicly go against Bitcoin, and even if her proposed digital asset AML act has no real chance of passing, it does foreshadow that there are future battles coming on this.

Saylor mentioned that as part of his transition from CEO to executive chairman, the company’s Bitcoin arm has been able to have a deeper focus on ways it can not only buy and hold BTC but also contribute to the ecosystem. As it seeks to branch out of regular software applications and into Bitcoin, MicroStrategy can leverage its existing knowledge to provide enterprises with tooling for the Bitcoin and Lightning ecosystem.

    Lightning Paywalls Versus Value4Value Asks

This is an opinion editorial by Will Schoellkopf, author of “The Bitcoin Dog” and host of the Bitcoin podcast “It’s So Early!”

When it comes to paywalls versus #value4value, is it really all or nothing?

Author’s note: My aim is not to attack anyone personally. I will use specific people’s quotes for my examples, but my intent is to respectfully challenge ideas, not attack people. Healthy debate of ideas in good faith helps Bitcoin, so I hope they understand.

In Gigi’s article, “The Freedom of Value,” he breaks down what’s broken with the monetization of information, “The problem with the internet is that information wants to be free.”

  • Breez Raises $4.5 Million In Fundraising Round

Breez Raises $4.5 Million In Fundraising Round

Breez, a Lightning solution service provider, has raised $4.5 million in an oversubscribed funding round led by ego death capital and Entrée Capital. Other industry funds that participated include Hivemind Ventures, Fulgur Ventures, Lightning Ventures, Hashkey Capital, Hawk Digital Innovation and Bitcoiner Ventures.

In a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine, Breez CEO Roy Sheinfeld commented on the company’s Lightning as a Service (LaaS) approach, saying, “Our goal remains to bring Lightning to the masses, as it was on day one. LaaS is a natural evolution towards that goal. Conceptually, it’s the best way to scale Lightning globally without sacrificing the values and attributes that make bitcoin history’s ultimate currency.”

The company describes Lightning as a Service as, “…Breez’s visionary new approach to bringing virtually instantaneous and frictionless bitcoin micropayments to the global mainstream.”

In regards to the raise, Jeff Booth, a general partner at ego death capital, stated that “Roy and his team are some of the top Lightning developers on the planet. In addition, Roy’s critical thinking skills and execution ability have us super excited to back Roy and his vision of making LaaS a reality.”

Lightning is a Layer 2 solution built on top of bitcoin that provides near-instantaneous transmission of payments with greatly reduced fees. The technology has been touted as a way to solve many of the problems that Bitcoin critics highlight as limitations of the technology. While there are still hesitations in the community in regards to its ability to fulfill this goal, others remain convinced it is the best option presented yet for scaling Bitcoin.

Breez started as a Lightning client, providing services such as a Lightning point-of-sale software and a native podcast player.

Now, Breez is oriented towards the goal of decentralizing the development of new Lightning-based applications and use cases through its non-custodial Lightning SDK. Through its product offerings, Breez hopes to show that Lightning is the Layer 2 solution to scaling Bitcoin for adoption.

Breez has previously received investments from Seetee, the bitcoin-focused subsidiary of Norwegian investment group Aker, and funding from the Human Rights Foundation

  • Built On Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, BLIP Wants To Make Your Chats Unstoppable

Built On Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, BLIP Wants To Make Your Chats Unstoppable

A new Bitcoin-based encrypted chat platform has been announced at the Adopting Bitcoin conference, BLIP.

The new app, yet to be publicly released, leverages Hexum, a proprietary multilayer encryption method, also created by the team behind BLIP, that promises a more secure communication than popular end-to-end (E2E) encrypted apps.

“WhatsApp and Signal use one static private key. The Hexum encryption method gives you a private key per message or per interaction. So hacking that is very difficult,” Alejandro Muyshondt, El Salvador national security advisor and co-founder of BLIP founding company High Voltage, told Bitcoin Magazine.

  • Leading South African Retailer Pick n Pay Starts Accepting Bitcoin

Leading South African Retailer Pick n Pay Starts Accepting Bitcoin

Customers in South Africa can now use their bitcoin to purchase regular daily goods at a local food retailer.

Pick n Pay, one of South Africa’s largest retailers, has started rolling out Bitcoin payments in its stores, extending a pilot that began with 10 locations five months ago to a total of 39, local news outlet Sunday Times reported. The retailer said it plans to enable the payment option on all of its stores in coming months.

In addition to supporting on-chain Bitcoin transactions, Pick n Pay’s BTC-enabled payment gateway also allows customers to pay with Lightning wallets, a move that turns even the smallest of payments feasible. With its usage broadly showcased in the adoption of bitcoin by El Salvador last year, Lightning reduces transaction costs to a minimum while ensuring nearly instantaneous settlements. Customers can use the Bitcoin or Lightning wallet of their choice.

  • Addressing The Realities Of Taro’s Limitations

Addressing The Realities Of Taro’s Limitations

This is an opinion editorial by Shinobi, a self-taught educator in the Bitcoin space and tech-oriented Bitcoin podcast host.

Taro finally released beta code for testnet, and it has continued to be a big point of discussion for a few weeks now at this point. It is being discussed by many as some kind of panacea for the issues of people in developing nations or countries being decimated by close to or outright hyperinflation. Many are presenting it as the solution to everything. The ability to self-custody, to avoid the inherent volatility of bitcoin, to still have access to Lightning as a payment network. It would have the stability of fiat without losing the access to Bitcoin’s openness and censorship resistance. It can provide a lot of utility, and yes it does provide the “stability” of fiat while simultaneously allowing interoperability with the Bitcoin network, but it is being wildly oversold by many of the people discussing it.

  • How The New York Times Could Have Used Lightning To Make Millions Of Dollars

How The New York Times Could Have Used Lightning To Make Millions Of Dollars

This is an opinion editorial by Ram, a twenty-year old-student, soldier and storyteller.

To understand why the New York Times could have made so much more money last year, it’s worth appreciating micropayments in the context of the Lightning Network.

We usually think of Lightning as a Bitcoin scalability solution as it makes everyday payments in bitcoin viable. Essentially, Lightning is a protocol built on top of the main Bitcoin network, and here, transaction costs are significantly lower and payment speeds are much, much faster. In fact, Lightning is significantly more efficient than even Visa and Mastercard.
