  • People with measles visited Charlotte Lidl store, area QuikTrip, officials say

    People with measles may have infected others at a gas station, butcher shop, two grocers and a hospital emergency room in Mecklenburg and two surrounding counties, health officials said.

    Saturday, Mecklenburg County Public Health issued a measles exposure notice for Vista Auction, 2500 Sardis Road, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 29-30 and the Lidl grocery store at 9318 Monroe Road from 2 to 4:30 p.m Jan 30.

    If you were there during those hours, monitor for symptoms and learn more about what to do after a potential measles exposure, health officials said.

    “These locations were not the source of infection and are now safe to visit,” according to a department news release. “They are cooperating with public health on the investigation.”

    The exposure “isn’t linked to any cases in Mecklenburg County — it is linked to a case from another jurisdiction,” officials said.

    Mecklenburg has had three reported measles cases, according to the department.

    “If you see symptoms of measles, call your doctor, clinic or emergency department right away,” officials said. “It’s important to call a healthcare facility before you go to get instructions to prevent further spread of measles.”

    Friday, Union County health officials said a traveler may have exposed people to measles at a QuikTrip convenience store in Indian Trail.

    Visitors to the QuikTrip at 5650 W. Hwy 74 between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, may have been exposed to the highly contagious disease, officials said in a news release.

    Officials encouraged visitors to the QuikTrip during those hours to call Union County Public Health at 704-296-4420 for guidance.

    “At this time, there are no confirmed cases of measles in Union County,” according to the county news release.

    Lincoln County measles case

    Wednesday, the Lincoln County Health Department was notified of an unvaccinated person who tested positive for the highly contagious disease.

    The person may have infected people at three locations, officials said:

    • 3-5:15 p.m. Jan. 27, the Meating Place butcher shop, 114 E. Main St., Lincolnton.

    • 5-7:30 p.m. Jan. 27, Ingles, 2130 E Main St, Lincolnton.

    • 10:57 a.m.-4:17 p.m. Feb. 2, Atrium Health Lincoln emergency department, 433 McAlister Road, Lincolnton.

    Any visitors to those places during those hours should call the Lincoln County Health Department at 980-429-6289 for guidance.

    “Laboratory testing is not recommended for people who were exposed unless they develop symptoms of measles, including high fever and rash,” health officials said. “Symptoms of measles can start 7 to 21 days after being exposed.”

    The three Lincoln County locations “are considered safe to visit and pose no ongoing risk to the public,” officials said in a news release.

    North Carolina has had 17 measles cases since December, including one hospitalization, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

    How to recognize measles

    Measles symptoms to watch for include:

    • High fevers
    • Runny nose
    • Cough
    • Red, watery eyes
    • White spots on the inner cheeks, gums and roof of mouth
    • A red, raised and blotchy rash that starts on the face and progresses down the body

    The line outside Lidl’s newest U.S. store stretched down Northside Drive on Wednesday morning, matched only by the excitement of shoppers eager to step inside. With croissants and coffee in hand, people gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the European grocer’s latest location at 1090 Northside Drive NW.

    The ribbon-cutting ceremony began shortly after sunrise and drew a crowd that included residents, Georgia Tech students, and city officials. Among those present were Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and City Councilmember Dustin Hillis, who both emphasized the store’s significance for the surrounding community.

    “I’m glad that Lidl chose West Midtown for us to have fresh food accessible to so many people and at great prices,” Dickens said. “We have an amazing staff. I’m excited to work with them and excited for this community.”

    The new store is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and marks Lidl’s continued expansion across the Atlanta metro area, offering a curated mix of private-label goods, imported European specialties, and everyday household items. Known for its efficient store layouts and rotating weekly deals, Lidl brings a model of affordability and freshness that has made it one of Europe’s most popular supermarket chains.

    For store manager Shatara Jackson, the morning was a new milestone in her career. After five and a half years with Lidl, this was her first grand opening as a store manager.

    “It’s amazing,” Jackson said. “Just to see everybody stand outside so early in the morning waiting to see what the store has to offer is everything.”

    Jackson, who previously managed locations on Memorial Drive and Covington Highway, said she arrived at 4 a.m. to ensure the store was ready for customers. “We get trucks every single day with fresh produce and baked goods,” she said. “I’m just making sure that the focus is on the price points and the freshness of the store.”

    Atlanta City Councilmember Dustin Hillis, who represents District 9, said the opening marks an important addition to a rapidly growing corridor.

    “Having neighborhood grocery stores is very important, especially to this area with so much mixed-use development,” Hillis said. “We have students from Georgia Tech nearby, and now people can not just drive to the grocery store, but they can walk or ride their bikes. As we focus on bringing more complete streets to the city and connecting neighborhoods to their commercial centers, people can put fresh food and produce on their tables.”

    Readus emphasized that convenience was the main draw. “I’m just excited that we have a grocery store so close that I can walk to,” Readus said. “Before, I had to go all the way to Kroger or Publix. Now I can meal prep and eat healthier; it’s very advantageous for my fitness goals.”

    Inside, customers explored aisles filled with freshly baked bread, imported cheeses, and other affordable favorites.

    As Mayor Dickens cut the ribbon and before the crowd subsequently poured in, he spoke to the gathered community outside.

    “Thank you all for choosing this area, and I’m excited to see all these customers,” Dickens said. “Let’s continue to really support this grocery store so they can be as successful as possible, so the community can be served.”

    The new Lidl is located in West Midtown at 1090 Northside Drive NW, Atlanta, GA 30318.

    This $1 Bakery Find Is the Reason I Keep Shopping at Lidl

    I’m a pretty loyal grocery shopper, in that I rarely stray from my (basically two) usual haunts. I’m not in the habit of hopping from store to store for the end-all, be-all lowest prices. I essentially have a Myspace Top 2. That is, until I discovered a new Lidl location was opening up near me; then, of course, I had to throw my whole roster out the window.

    What started as casually flirting with the idea of just stopping by a Lidl ended up with me consistently with a sale flier in hand, reusable bags at the ready, and nearly getting a “I heart Lidl” tattoo on my forearm. I never looked back once I tried just one item in particular: the butter croissants. 

    Not only are they only $.79 a pop, but they’re also basically better than the freshly baked ones I get from my local bakery (that often go for at least six to eight times the price). How does Lidl do this witchcraft? I may never know, but I’m finally ready to stop gatekeeping this bakery gem. 

    What’s So Great About Lidl’s Butter Croissants?

    Okay, so once you pick up your jaw off the ground from spotting that low, low price, you can get to eating one of these puppies. What you’ll soon discover is that these are the platonic ideal of a croissant: buttery, light, flaky, and airy in the middle and ready for slicing into crois-sandwiches or stuffing with something sweet and dreamy, like chocolate hazelnut spread.

    Plus, they freeze up like a dream, so they’re a great thing to stock up on when they’re actually in stock because, as you’ll find, they’re pretty popular to those in-the-know. It was nearly an occupational hazard just to take a picture of these croissants over all the frenzy of other customers trying to get their share. 

    What’s the Best Way to Use Lidl’s Butter Croissants?

    While eating them all on their own is a valid and worthy endeavor (I personally like to rip the flaky layers and dunk them straight in a milky coffee), why stop there? Anytime I can, I try to use these croissants to bring me back to my Italian vacations of yore. If that sounds just as delectable to you, do yourself a big favor and stuff your croissants Italian cornetto-style with a dollop of crunchy pistachio cream, apricot jam, or fresh whipped cream and berries.

    Feeling more savory in your future? It goes without saying that these are the ideal vehicle for all sorts of sandwich fillings, like chicken salad, ham and cheese, or the best BLT you’ve had in recent memory. If you did yourself the aforementioned favor of stocking up on these croissants, you’ll be so glad you did; those croissants are going to be so happy in a savory breakfast casserole (or even a sweet one, for that matter).

    Gabrielsen Farms, a Jamesport-based grower, is once again supplying garden centers at Lidl grocery stores on Long Island. 

    The annuals, perennials, edible plants and shrubs that went on sale at Lidl garden centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties last week, come from the family operation, which has worked with the fast-growing grocery chain for the last three years, according to a company statement.

    Gabrielsen Farms has 300,000 square feet of greenhouses in three locations on the East End and employs sustainable growing practices. The greenhouses are 100 percent solar powered and controlled by computer systems, using recycled water. The grower also only uses pesticide-free fertilizers to help protect the area’s groundwater, according to the company. 

    Gabrielsen produces a wide variety of potted annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, flats and mixed containers, herbs and vegetables. Besides using sustainable growing methods, Gabrielsen also works with Long Island schools to teach agriculture and host student tours. 

    The garden centers will be outside of Lidl stores through the end of May. Participating locations include Garden City, Riverhead, Deer Park, Commack, Islip, East Rockaway, Syosset, Merrick, West Babylon, Massapequa, Oakdale, Patchogue, East Meadow, Center Moriches, Plainview, Farmingdale and Selden.

    Lidl to open its largest area store in Deer Park | Long Island Business News

    Lidl, the German discount supermarket chain, will open a new store in Deer Park next week, its largest in the region. 

    The 32,000-square-foot grocery store was built on a 5-acre site at 450 Commack Road and the $12 million project is Lidl’s first ground-up store development on Long Island. 

    A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new store is planned for 7:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Lidl will employ more than 50 people at the Deer Park location. 

    Throughout its grand opening weekend from Wednesday, Jan. 18 through Sunday, Jan. 22, Lidl will donate $1 to Cohen Children’s Medical Center for every new myLidl member who signs up and sets Lidl Deer Park as their home store.  The first 100 customers in line before the ribbon cutting will be presented with a gift card ranging from $5 to $100 each. Shoppers can also enter to win a $500 Lidl gift card and take advantage of special giveaways. 

    Ahead of the Deer Park grand opening, Lidl will be hosting an open house at the store on Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., where local community members are invited to check out the store for the first time. 

    The fast-growing grocery chain currently has more than 20 stores on Long Island, with the bulk of those being remodeled retail spaces that were formerly occupied by Best Market and other supermarkets. Lidl purchased the 27-store Best Market chain in 2018 and has been rebranding most of those locations.
