CDC Promotes Unproven Vaccine–Autism Link in Website Reversal

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made a significant revision to a section of its website regarding the relationship between vaccines and autism. Previously, the CDC maintained that vaccines do not cause autism based on extensive research and population studies. The updated statement now suggests that studies have not definitively ruled out a potential link between infant vaccines and autism, marking a shift in the agency’s stance.

This change reflects claims often associated with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has publicly advocated the view that vaccines may be linked to autism, despite the overwhelming scientific consensus that discredits such connections.

In the revised wording, the CDC states that the assertion “vaccines do not cause autism” is “not an evidence-based claim,” suggesting that previous studies showing no link may not have been fully acknowledged by health authorities. The revision has raised concerns among public health experts regarding the potential implications for vaccine confidence and public health messaging.

Reports from Axios and the Washington Post highlight that many CDC career scientists were not consulted or informed before the revision and learned of it only after the update was made public. According to Social Media Today, YouTube has announced a new feature allowing users to add contextual notes to videos, akin to X’s (formerly Twitter) Community Notes. This feature, initially available on mobile in the U.S. in English, aims to provide relevant and easy-to-understand context.

According to YouTube, notes will be visible if deemed broadly helpful. Users can rate notes as “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “unhelpful” and explain their reasoning, such as citing high-quality sources or clarity. A bridging-based algorithm will use these ratings to decide which notes are published.

Originally called “Birdwatch,” Community Notes on X became a tool under Elon Musk to reduce the need for paid moderation by allowing users to determine the content’s veracity. While YouTube does not plan to rely solely on community notes, it views this feature as a supplementary element to enhance the context of certain clips.

YouTube acknowledges potential errors during the pilot phase but invites feedback to refine the system.

A study published in the Journal Nature delves into how advertising primarily finances misinformation, its impact on involved companies, and potential interventions to curb this funding. The study reveals that advertising on misinformation websites is widespread across various industries, amplified by digital advertising platforms automatically distributing ads online. An information-provision experiment shows companies face significant consumer backlash when their ads appear on misinformation sites.

Surveys of decision-makers at these companies reveal a general unawareness of their ads appearing on such sites, though there’s a strong preference to avoid this. When informed about the role of digital platforms in placing ads on misinformation websites, decision-makers showed increased demand for solutions to prevent such placements.

The findings suggest that transparency for advertisers about where their ads appear could reduce misinformation funding. Consumers’ ability to trace ads back to companies could further diminish support for misinformation websites.

Ultimately, the study provides evidence that advertisers and digital platforms have roles in the unintentional financing of misinformation and that information-based interventions could effectively reduce this issue.

Vivek Ramaswamy Calls for Major Changes at BuzzFeed After Acquiring Stake

Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is advocating significant changes at BuzzFeed, including adding new board members, reducing staff, and incorporating right-leaning talent, following his acquisition of an 8.37% activist stake in the company.

Smartmatic Settles Defamation Lawsuit with One America News

Smartmatic, a voting technology company, has settled a defamation lawsuit against the right-leaning television network One America News (OAN). The lawsuit accused OAN of falsely claiming that Smartmatic rigged the 2020 U.S. presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. The terms of the settlement are confidential, but Smartmatic voluntarily dismissed its lawsuit against OAN.

Smartmatic had estimated that OAN’s false claims significantly reduced its business value. The lawsuit was part of several accusing right-leaning media of spreading election misinformation to increase viewership and advertising revenue.

Smartmatic still has pending lawsuits against Fox News and Newsmax over their election coverage, seeking $2.7 billion in the Fox lawsuit. Last year, Dominion Voting Systems reached a $787.5 million settlement with Fox.

OAN, which positioned itself to the right of Fox and Newsmax, suffered financial setbacks in 2022 when Verizon and AT&T’s DirecTV stopped carrying its programming. Smartmatic accused OAN of causing irreparable harm by spreading disinformation about the election and its technology, eroding trust in the democratic process.

In court papers, OAN argued that awarding Smartmatic more than $2 billion would silence a conservative voice in the “marketplace of ideas” protected by the First Amendment.
