Jon Becker, Founder of Aardvark Tactical and PROJECT7 ARMOR, Releases The Debrief, a New Conversational Podcast Centered on Tactical Leadership

On The Debrief Podcast, Jon Becker speaks with elite tactical team leaders on team culture, crisis negotiation, tactical science, and more – in order to make us all better leaders, better thinkers, and better people.

    Press Release

    Jun 30, 2022

After over four decades spent serving and protecting tactical operators, Jon Becker is imparting some of the lessons he has learned along the way to listeners across the nation. The Debrief is an interview-based podcast that tells the stories of the leaders of some of the world’s top law enforcement and military units – individuals who navigate dangerous situations with their highly effective teams every day.

Jon Becker founded AARDVARK at just seventeen years old. The company started out as a climbing equipment business, often selling gear to SWAT teams and operators. After attending law school and working in police litigation, Becker realized that the best way he could serve tactical operators was by producing and providing high quality gear and products that would enhance operator safety on the job. After AARDVARK’s expansion and success, Becker founded PROJECT7, a provider of purpose-built, scalable, and configurable tactical platforms. Throughout this decades-long journey, Becker has learned invaluable lessons about the lives and work of law enforcement and tactical operators, leading him to a deep understanding of the principles and core values behind highly effective teams. After keynoting for many years on the leadership of elite units and what he terms “culture-centric” leadership, Becker is putting those lessons into The Debrief, a non-profit podcast that serves the wider public.

Although The Debrief focuses on the stories of tactical officers and team leaders, the audience is much more broad: leaders from all spheres, including business, entrepreneurship, communications, healthcare, law enforcement, and much more, will be informed and inspired by the lessons The Debrief has to impart. Jon and guests will cover conversations that are relevant to leaders of any field, including accountability, psychology, risk taking, and collaboration. The primary goal of The Debrief is to share these stories in the hopes of making us all better leaders, better thinkers, and better people.

The Debrief is available wherever you find your podcasts, including SpotifyAppleYouTube, and Amazon. Since its release in early June, the podcast has been met with awesome reviews and coverage from other podcasts such as CATO and Tactical Breakdown, as well as outlets such as Police & Security News. Visit www.thedebrief.live to stay updated on the latest episodes as they release.

To set up an interview with Mr. Becker regarding The Debrief Podcast and its guests, or to learn more about The Debrief, please contact Boaz Kelson at boaz@fpwmedia.com or 541-790-1455.

  • Austin Pets Alive! | We Need Government Animal Services That Work

Austin Pets Alive! | We Need Government Animal Services That Work

    Oct 06, 2021

There is one day left before we know whether the city council has taken action on our APA! Resolution by adding it to the next city council meeting agenda.

What keeps rising to the top of criticism of our resolution from council offices is that they don’t understand why Austin Pets Alive! should be allowed to help communities outside of the greater Austin metro area. They see and hear about animals having long lengths of stay at Austin Animal Center(AAC) and the kennels being overcrowded there. Some believe that Austin Pets Alive!’s primary function, in addition to keeping Austin a No Kill City, should be to relieve the pressure at Austin Animal Center for the city staff. Some also believe that Austin Pets Alive!’s practice of helping animals outside of Austin is actually causing the overcrowding at Austin Animal Center.

The problem with this line of thinking is that “relieving pressure” is not something the City of Austin compensates APA! to do nor is it in line with our mission. APA! has used the Town Lake Animal Center for the last 10 years to keep Austin No Kill by pulling animals from Austin Animal Center who will die if we don’t. The city council has awarded Austin Animal Center with enough funding to relieve their own pressure.

So then why is Austin Animal Center constantly crowded?

It’s because Austin city leadership has given little credence to research and data that clearly shows that Austin has, and has always had, more than enough adopters to take in every single animal at Austin Animal Center AND to adopt every single animal that gets help from APA!, Austin Humane Society and the hundreds of rescue groups who take in animals from across the state.

We believe that the reason that credence is not given is that it is much easier to say “there are not enough adopters,” which implies that increasing adoptions is outside the control of the shelter director and reinforces poor performance.

We believe it is incumbent on us as shelter professionals, and we include Austin Animal Center leadership in that, to look at data when making any decision. We thought, but now realize we might be wrong, that the city manager and the city council also used data to drive decisions. If AAC leadership, and city council members, did that, they would be able to say “I see a problem with too many animals living at AAC at one time” and then connect that to the thought of “what can I do to make this better”. We have said it before but it’s worth repeating: adoptions don’t just happen. They are the result of resources, time, and strategic planning to ensure that the animals housed at AAC are getting opportunities to meet people and to be seen.

To put it in perspective, over the last five years, the city has increased Austin Animal Center’s budget by $1M per year. Tellingly, every single category of programming has benefited from that increased funding EXCEPT “Pet Placement/ Pet Outcomes” which actually fell by 30% in budgeted monies. Why isn’t anyone in leadership, at any level, examining and correcting that instead of strongarming APA! into making up for it?

Austin Pets Alive! has never been interested in being the City of Austin’s “overflow” for a system that lacks oversight, lacks critical thinking, and continues to make poor decisions and we are standing by our mission to save lives.

As individual citizens and as a private nonprofit, we have asked and asked for the government animal shelter to be run well because it is critically important to Austin’s animals and to APA!. That has not worked. We hope this final attempt to wake up our city council will work and we, in partnership with the City of Austin, can finally focus on forward momentum. To keep the support strong through this final day of city council consideration, please keep emailing to express your support for the APA! resolution.

Even if you already have sent an email, we need to keep the message top of mind. Thank you!

Spirit of America Welcomes Zack Hosford as Director to Increase Citizen Engagement in National Security Issues

Foreign policy leader joins the nonprofit to develop new ways for Americans to work together

    Press Release

    updated: May 26, 2021

Spirit of America, a nonprofit citizen service organization that supports the safety and success of U.S. troops and diplomats serving abroad, has hired Zack Hosford to develop new initiatives that will engage citizens in fulfilling its mission to preserve the promise of a free and better life.

As a director, Hosford will focus on strategic ways to promote American ideals in the face of challenges presented by near-peer competitors and increasing authoritarian influence. As with all of Spirit of America’s work, Hosford will bring innovative thinking to leverage the strength of Americans who want to work together to make the country and world safe for our nation’s democratic values.

Hosford joins Spirit of America with broad experience in foreign policy and national security. Most recently, he served as the acting director of the Asia Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). Previously, he was the senior foreign policy advisor to Senator Edward J. Markey, a senior advisor for Asia-Pacific Strategy within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense, and a fellow in the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), among other roles.

He holds a master’s degree in security studies from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and a bachelor’s degree from Franklin and Marshall College.

“I am both excited and honored to join Spirit of America, an organization dedicated to service,” Hosford said. “As the world won’t necessarily promote democracy, human rights, and fair competition on its own, the engagement and involvement of American citizens will be critical in helping achieve those ideals.”

“Zack is an accomplished leader who will help us engage citizens in new, innovative ways to strengthen our security and to bring the entire world closer to the shared values we uphold. I am excited to welcome him to the Spirit of America team,” said Jim Hake, CEO.

  • New Groundbreaking Research Study Released About Women of Color in Business by Authors/Harvard Business School Alumnae

New Groundbreaking Research Study Released About Women of Color in Business by Authors/Harvard Business School Alumnae

The 2020 Women of Color in Business: Cross Generational Survey, in Co-Sponsorship With the Executive Leadership Council, involves nearly 2,500 respondents across all generations, including Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers amongst Black, LatinX, Asian and Caucasian women. And for the first time, the research also included White male manager respondents.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 22, 2021

Bonita C. Stewart and Jacqueline Adams, trailblazing business leaders, co-authors, and Harvard Business School alumnae, announced today, with The Executive Leadership Council, the release of their 2020 Women of Color in Business: Cross-Generational Survey©. The new survey is an evolution from their 2019 survey which was included in their book, A BLESSING: Women of Color Teaming Up to Lead, Empower and Thrive, published last fall. Their latest research involved nearly 2,500 respondents across all generations, including Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers amongst Black, LatinX, Asian and Caucasian women. And for the first time, the research also included White male manager respondents.

Although the new survey covers a wide variety of topics, two major new findings involve “generational diversity” and the importance of manager training. “Generational diversity” is a term the co-authors coined to highlight the nuances that are being overlooked in today’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion conversations, specifically, representation across the generations. The 2020 survey found that Gen Z and Millennial female “desk workers,” especially those who are Black and LatinX, are supremely confident that they will control their careers. They are mission-driven and tech-forward, with 42% of Black Gen Z respondents saying that they are always the first to know about technological innovations, twice the percentage of women of the other races.

The data has convinced the co-authors that “great managers matter.” When asked about mentoring, the female managers of all races were more magnanimous in their willingness to help anyone regardless of race or gender, ranging from 56%-65%. Only 34% of the white male managers concurred. Fifty-one percent preferred to give and 61% preferred to receive advice on the job from other white men because: “I feel I can better identify with them.”

To win the race for exceptional talent, leaders and managers must become comfortable with hiring underrepresented minorities in multiples, providing honest feedback and stretch assignments, and creating an inclusive environment for ideas to flow freely from all employees across all generations, genders and races.

Other areas in the research included finance and investments, professional development, and the pursuit of “side-preneurship,” especially by Black women who were three-times more likely than their white counterparts to be leading a side business in their spare time.

The 2020 data found that 46% of Black women were frequently or always the only person of their race in a professional setting, down just one point from 2019. By contrast, 72% of white women said they were not very often or never the only person of their race in a professional setting, again down by one point from 2019.

This “onlyness” has costs. Twice as many Black women as their white counterparts said they faced extra scrutiny of their job applications and job performances because of their race. Large majorities of all of the female desk workers reported additional stress on the job as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic: 70% for Black, 72% for LatinX, 60% for Asian and 67% for white women. The female desk workers also reported additional stress as a result of the racial and social justice protests: 54% for Black, 39% for LatinX, 34% for Asian and 30% for white women.

Stewart and Adams’ findings are particularly pertinent as we continue to see a number of landmark appointments to leadership positions by women of color.

Stewart and Adams said: “The bottom line is that great leaders and managers – male and female – want to win. We advocate for a commitment to manager excellence through additional manager training and finding ways to create psychological safety so that everyone, especially the white male managers, can confidently ‘team up’ with highly qualified, ambitious women of color.”

The Executive Leadership Council’s (ELC) decision to announce with Stewart and Adams on the release of this consequential survey’s findings is particularly significant because the information directly aligns with the organization’s purpose of increasing the number of successful Black executives by adding value to their development, leadership, and philanthropic endeavors across the life cycle of their careers. “The past several months have seen multiple Black women make history rising to CEO positions in Fortune 500 companies and the highest leadership positions in government,” says Michael C. Hyter, President and CEO of The ELC. “The issue is not the lack of qualified Black women. It’s the lack of opportunity for Black women to ascend to these roles. The ELC is proud to support this research to empower and energize Black women, and enlighten their organizations, as they strive for future career success.”

New DDI Study Reveals Minority Leaders Getting More Promotions, But More Likely to Switch Companies to Advance

Part of the Global Leadership Forecast series, DDI’s new Diversity and Inclusion Report 2020 shows strong benefits of corporate inclusion efforts, as well as retention risks for minority leaders

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 28, 2020

Senior minority executives plan to leave their current position at twice the normal rate of other executives. And this exodus could be coming within the next year, according to DDI’s Diversity and Inclusion Report 2020.

This is just one finding from the report, which is part of the Global Leadership Forecast series by DDI. The report includes data from 15,787 leaders and 2,102 human resources professionals. These leaders represent more than 1,740 organizations across more than 25 industries globally. The report delivers data on gender and racial/ethnic diversity among leaders, and its effect on companies’ financial results. Companies can use the data to help guide their diversity and inclusion efforts, as well as their talent strategy.

“While leaders from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds are finally advancing at a faster rate, our study showed that organizations face high retention risks for these leaders,” said Stephanie Neal, director of DDI’s Center for Analytics and Behavioral Research. “It’s likely that these leaders still face significant barriers as they move up the ladder, which may be why they feel like they have to leave the company to advance. Companies should be paying close attention to how inclusive their culture and talent practices are to ensure they retain these diverse and highly talented leaders.”

The study found that fewer than one in four leaders reported their organization consistently recruits and promotes from a diverse talent pool. Furthermore, only 27 percent of leaders believe inclusion is a strong part of their organizations’ culture and values.

The Diversity and Inclusion Report 2020 found that while organizations are working to build more diverse and inclusive workforces, there are still gaps that need to be addressed. The study also found:

    • Diversity has a greater impact on financial performance than any other organizational demographic factor. Organizations with above-average gender, racial and ethnic diversity had at least 30 percent of women and 20 percent of leaders from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds in leadership roles. These organizations were eight times more likely to be in the top 10 percent of organizations for financial performance.
    • Leaders from minority backgrounds are more likely to feel the need to change companies to progress their career across all leadership levels. Also, they were much more likely to say they plan to leave within the next year. This is especially true among senior-level minority leaders, who are more than twice as likely to leave as their non-minority peers.
    • Diversity and inclusion efforts resonate across organizations’ entire workforce. More than one-third of leaders from companies that qualify as “Best Places to Work” reported that inclusion is a strong component of their work culture and value. This is in comparison to the 20 percent of leaders from other companies without the same label.
    • Organizations with more diversity in high-potential pools typically see higher financial performance. Organizations in the top 10 percent of financial performance report that women make up 24 percent of their high-potential pool, and 19 percent are from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Organizations with below average financial performance report less diversity in their high-potential pools. Their pools include only 16 percent women and 12 percent from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
    • Women continue to struggle to advance. At higher levels of leadership, women indicated an increasing need to switch companies to climb higher in their roles. In fact, 45 percent of women executives said they would likely need to switch companies to advance, compared to only 32 percent of male executives.

“There’s a clear bottom-line benefit to workplace diversity and inclusion, and organizations can only benefit from increasing these efforts,” Neal said. “It’s important that leaders take the time to assess the state of diversity and inclusion in their organization and employ best practices if they want to realize the benefits of a diverse and inclusive workforce.”

Campaign Donors Step Up to Cover Tuition Increase

    Press Release

    updated: Sep 5, 2018

This past spring, Highlands College announced a tuition increase for the 2018-2019 school year, their first such increase in three years. But thanks to the generosity of donors and the growing endowment of the Eternal Impact Campaign, tuition did not change for current Highlands College students.

“We are blessed to have donors who are just as passionate as our students about making an eternal impact,” said Kay Hargrave, executive vice president of external affairs. “And although our campaign is less than a year old and the first we’ve attempted at Highlands College, we are already ahead of our projections.”

We are blessed to have donors who are just as passionate as our students about making an eternal impact.

    Kay Hargrave, EVP, External Affairs

Tuition increases are a reality at most higher education institutions in America. Highlands College is no exception, with a student body that has doubled in the past four years requiring additional staff and facilities. “We know the vision God has for Highlands College is bigger than our current capacity. We need to grow and to do that, we have to find more funding, develop our facilities and provide opportunity to more future leaders,” said Chris Hodges, chancellor at Highlands College and also senior pastor at Church of the Highlands, which is where the college began.

Highlands College is a biblical higher education institution that exists to supply the church with leaders of character to fulfill the Great Commission. Founded in 2011, located in Birmingham, Alabama, it is a two-year college offering numerous ministry certificates to its student body of over 1,000. Highlands College holds applicant status with the ABHE Commission on Accreditation.

Periscope Data Recognized as Industry Leader for Inclusion, Diversity and Development Efforts

Comparably.com Ranks Periscope Data Among Best Companies for Professional Development, Leadership Team, Diversity and Women

Periscope Data, the world’s first software platform built to address the complete analytics lifecycle, has been recognized by Comparably.com as one of the top companies in the U.S. in several categories in its latest rankings. As a reflection of its dedication to building a collaborative, dynamic and inclusive culture, Periscope Data was recognized as one of the top companies for professional development and its leadership team, while CEO Harry Glaser was voted one of the Best CEOs for female employees and for diversity.

Comparably’s ratings reflect employee perspectives on the CEO’s leadership style and effectiveness across several categories. Periscope Data was one of only four small-to-mid-sized companies to appear on all four of these lists.

These rankings are an excellent reflection of the priorities we’ve set when building a positive culture at Periscope Data. Developing a business of people who are kind, positive, inclusive, helpful and transparent doesn’t just impact our day-to-day work environment, it absolutely makes an impact in improving our business and building a better product for our clients. I’m very excited about the path ahead for Periscope Data and proud of the team we’ve built.

Harry Glaser, Co-Founder and CEO of Periscope Data

“2018 is the year in which women across the country stood up and spoke out against gender discrimination, pay inequality and harassment in the workplace,” said Jason Nazar, Comparably CEO. “Comparably’s Best CEOs for Women awards recognizes the leaders that female employees ranked as the best of the best. These CEOs create cultures that support and encourage women, and we hope it will motivate other leaders to do the same.”

“These rankings are an excellent reflection of the priorities we’ve set when building a positive culture at Periscope Data,” said Harry Glaser, CEO and co-founder of Periscope Data. “Developing a business of people who are kind, positive, inclusive, helpful and transparent doesn’t just impact our day-to-day work environment, it absolutely makes an impact in improving our business and building a better product for our clients. I’m very excited about the path ahead for Periscope Data and proud of the team we’ve built.”

Today’s recognition is only the latest in a string of recognitions for Periscope Data: the company was recently named among the 2018 Best Places to Work by the San Francisco Business Times and its customer solutions team was recognized by the Stevie Awards as one of the top support teams in the country. In 2017, Periscope Data ranked in Comparably’s top five percent of companies for employee happiness, leadership, retention, executive team, women, compensation, work culture and diversity.

Periscope Data has seen dramatic growth in the first few months of 2018 – its Unified Data Platform handles more than 20 million queries per day, by data teams at more than 1,000 companies, with more customers joining every day. Periscope Data introduced two major enhancements to its platform in the past several months – data discovery for business, its new way for business users to discover insights faster without the need for proprietary data modeling languages, and integration with Python and R directly within Periscope Data’s platform to enable more powerful data analysis.

    About Periscope Data

Periscope Data builds software that turns data teams into superheroes. Its Unified Data Platform is the industry’s first to address the complete analytics lifecycle, allowing data teams to ingest, store, analyze, visualize and report on data all from one connected platform. This empowers them to collaborate and drive faster insight while allowing businesses to foster a data-driven culture around a single source of truth. Periscope Data serves more than 1,000 customers globally, including Adobe, Crunchbase, EY, Flexport, New Relic, Supercell, Tinder and ZipRecruiter.

Over 600 Muslim and Jewish Women Gather to Rise Up Against Hate

More than 600 Muslim and Jewish women gathered to learn from the nation’s leading scholars and activists on ways to combat bigotry and hate

    Press Release

    updated: Nov 10, 2017

The Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom held its 4th Annual Conference this past weekend at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. The theme of this conference was “Rising up Against Hate.” More than 600 Muslim and Jewish women gathered to learn from the nation’s leading scholars and activists on ways to combat bigotry and hate.

Notable religious scholars like former president of the Islamic Society of North America Dr. Ingrid Matson was one of four keynotes for the event. Matson spoke about her heroes Hajar and Saffiyah and said: “Love doesn’t mean the absence of conflict, it means that despite that conflict, we will work together.” Author of the New York Times best-selling novel The Red Tent and Jewish Keynote Anita Diamant said: “Friendship is as essential as bread and as crucial as chocolate.”

We have over a thousand women still on a waiting list and are expanding by the minute. We are not just a group anymore, we are a movement!

    Sheryl Olitzky, Executive Director

A surprise appearance by Senator Corey Booker had the audience up on their feet, empowered by the courage to wage peace.

“America is not a nation of tolerance but a nation of love,” said Booker.

With several dozen breakout sessions, there was something for everyone. Workshop themes ranged from the action-packed self-defense moves by founding President of the Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) Rana Abdelhamid to the introspective text studies of Director of Multifaith Studies and Initiatives Rabbi Nancy Fuchs Kreimer and Scholar of Islamic Studies Homayra Ziad of the Institute of Islamic, Christian and Jewish studies.

Facilitator Sarah Aptilon of Kansas City conducted a workshop titled “Encountering ‘Us vs. Them’: How to Talk to a Bigot” on how to address those within or outside of our own communities whom we consider to be closed-minded in some way — the server who makes an offhand racist joke, the argumentative friend, the stranger whose comments you overhear at the gym, the relative who makes offensive remarks at the holidays.

Aptilon says, “I was inspired by the experiences that participants shared. They described what had and hadn’t worked for them. Our discussion confirmed that arguing and presenting facts isn’t usually effective, while listening deeply, asking questions and sharing personal stories can work in subtle but powerful ways.”

Professor and co-founder of the Sisterhood Atiya Aftab, Esq., conducted a workshop on “What You Wanted to Know About Judaism and Islam and Were Afraid to Ask” with Rabbi Shira Stern.

Women from over 26 different states and the District of Columbia attended this year’s event with many of them taking to social media to memorialize the event with photos and videos. Manika Patel of Austin, Texas, wrote, “What an amazing weekend I had at the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom 4th annual conference in Morristown, NJ this weekend. Making new lifelong friends from all across the US, listening to some amazing and inspiring speakers, I can’t wait to see what wonderful things you ladies are going to do in the Sisterhood for 2018.”

Board President Donna Cephas spoke about the power of each of our Sisters to reach many others, to create deep interfaith relationships and to initiate change through waging peace. “Our movement now includes young women leading their own Teenage Chapters.”

The day-long event culminated in a panel discussion moderated by American comedian and host of SiriusXM Progress The Dean Obeidallah Show, the only daily national radio show hosted by a Muslim American. Panelists included author of the recently released Adnan’s Story Rabia Chaudry, founder of Ms. magazine Letty Cottin Pograbin, founding President of the Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) Rana Abdelhamid and the Executive Director of the Sisterhood Sheryl Olitzky.

When asked what was her hope for the future of the organization, Olitzky said: “when we are no longer needed.”

If membership growth is any indication, they are a long way from reaching that goal. The tripling of Sisterhood Chapters and their online communities reflect a burning need to continue this work.

“We have over a thousand women still on a waiting list and are expanding by the minute. We are not just a group anymore, we are a movement!” says Olitzky.

A Manifesto on Teamwork: What Companies Can Accomplish

Ron Wallace, Former President, UPS International, Offers Secrets To Success.

    Press Release

    updated: Apr 5, 2016

Ron Wallace was a package delivery driver for six years in rural northern Idaho before he rose through the ranks to become president of UPS International in one of the most recognized and respected companies in the world.

In his newest book, Leadership Lessons from a UPS Driver: Delivering a Culture of We, Not Me (BerrettKoehler Publishers, April 4, 2016), Wallace shares his insights and advice from a career of nearly four decades.

“UPS founder Jim Casey regularly reminded his managers of the many benefits of investing in their people. ‘While building up others, you will build up yourself,’ he said. Ron Wallace was a walking testament to this spirit, and his book will serve as an inspiration for all managers looking to help their teams climb to new heights.”

David Abney, Chairman and CEO, United Parcel Service

He pulls back the curtain and describes the principals and inner workings of UPS that have never been revealed before; principals that have helped guide the company’s success for more than a century.

Instead of writing a typical business memoir celebrating the leader as a celebrity, Wallace shares vivid stories that focus on the people he worked with, the challenges they overcame, and how these fine-tuned principals have come to define the UPS way.

The straightforward and easy to understand lessons provide a blueprint for an individual or company to build on past successes and adapt to future challenges. This is a must read for anyone aspiring to become a great leader.

    What others are saying:

“UPS founder Jim Casey regularly reminded his managers of the many benefits of investing in their people. ‘While building up others, you will build up yourself,’ he said. Ron Wallace was a walking testament to this spirit, and his book will serve as an inspiration for all managers looking to help their teams climb to new heights.”
    – David Abney, Chairman and CEO, United Parcel Service

“Ron Wallace does a phenomenal job of sharing leadership insights in Leadership Lessons from a UPS Driver. You’ll be intrigued as you learn to apply these principles to your life. Very practical steps yet remarkable results when applied.”

  • ‘We Got A Bit Feral’: 7 Guests Recount Staying For Free On An Island Working On Ideas

‘We Got A Bit Feral’: 7 Guests Recount Staying For Free On An Island Working On Ideas

As I wrote about earlier this week, Ideas Island is an island run by Swedish creativity speaker Fredrik Haren where he invites people working on ideas to come stay for free. Guests come from all over the world, work in a diverse set of professions and pursue a variety of projects. As happened to me, many of them arrive with one intention but then find the island takes over. Here is a smattering of their experiences.

Sam Jenkins, 29, and James Springall, 37, London

Professions: freelance advertising creatives, No to Normal

    Stayed: Vifarnaholme, June 2015

    Project: A children’s book

Sam: It was very much a stab-in-the-dark, crazy thing to do. It seems kind of unbelievable, too good to be true that someone would let you go to this island, theoretically for free but giving the money to charity. Because the info they provided was very sparse — we got a PDF with some pictures and a map and a photo of what the boat looks like and the pin for the padlock — it aroused feelings of adventure, of being a child again and going off into the unknown. We made good friends with the neighbors living across the water and had a lot of drunken dinners and then we would have to row the boat back over at 1 or 2am.

James: For us it was less important that we produce an enormous amount of work and more important that we had time to envisage future projects. I’m a collage artist, but I didn’t bring all the materials I would need to make collages — magazines, scissors and glue — but I did come back with an abundance of ideas as to how I may take certain ideas forward.

Sam, on how ideas came up: It was the stillness, the emptiness of there being no other stimulus or shroud of crap you have to do day to day hanging over creativity. You don’t have all the mod-cons that you gathered growing into adulthood, whether physical, mental, or things you worry about like email, bills.

It’s a bit like being given a blank canvas at first. It can be a bit daunting. All of a sudden, we had all this time. You’re always like, I wish I had time to do this, or I wish I had time do that, but when you’re given the time, you’re a little stunted almost by the vastness of it.

Frances Brown, 31, Cambridge, England, with three friends

Profession: Mentoring and course director, the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme

    Stayed: Vifarnaholme, August 2015

    Project: write her PhD dissertation

We explored, we hunted, fished, [chopped logs], and ate almost everything cooked on the fire on the beach and swam every day and played like children. I was there with two police officers, one of whom was really very quite high up. By day two, we had reverted to kids. We had long conversations about work and about how we should be more playful and say, ‘I’m not going to work today. I’m going to sit here and enjoy the view or spend time with my friends.’ Just being away from all those things that take your attention away made us realize what was important — spending time with your friends and actually listening what they’re saying, not checking your phone or having to rush off anywhere. When I first went to the island, I thought I should be doing work 10 hours a day, and then I quite quickly chose not to and to enjoy the island for what it could be. I worked for four hours, but it still felt good enough to stop. Afterwards, it became quite clear from past guests and from Sofia that that’s Frederick’s plan: you go there to work and the island takes over.

Two of the girls live in Scotland, in Dundee, and I’ve been living in cities for the past 10 years, so we got a bit feral. We were chopping down trees and fishing and at one point, accidentally, one of the girls was fishing, and the duck swallowed the hook. We tried to rescue it, but we couldn’t. We said we can’t just cut this duck loose and leave it to die, so we killed and cooked it. But we were traumatized we accidentally hooked the duck and felt really guilty. I ran away. The other two quickly hammered it, plucked it, hung it upside down and properly butchered it, and one of the girls had hunted with her dad so she knew how to prepare it and we cooked it on a griddle over the campfire. I remember the other girls that were not part of killing it at first were like, oh no, we don’t want it, but then we realized that was ridiculous. If we can’t eat something that we know exactly where comes from … and yeah, it was the best duck we’d ever eaten.

I teach this course for online leadership for 120 young people. While I was there I decided to write a module which boiled down everything I was learning on the island such as the science behind having your best ideas when you let your brain relax — like how you have your best ideas in the shower. When you stop thinking about what you’re supposed to think, your neurons meet up and get great ideas, and that’s what I found on the island. I wasn’t pushing myself. I was so distracted doing all these other things I really liked, that by the time I got up the next day, all these ideas were pouring out.

When I put the module out, I was worried about what kind of response this would get, because my students come from all over the world — 70 different cultures and backgrounds and opinions about things — and I thought either they’re going to really gonna love this or they’re going to think, ‘She’s crack. She went to the island and has come back a massive hippie.’ But it has turned out to be the most popular module we’ve done in the whole course this year with the most assignment hand-ins. We called the module The Island.

When are you ever in situations where no one’s looking at you? We noticed that really quickly that we lost constructs that we live in — like, that we are professional women — and we found as the week went on, they just fell away. One girl said, I’m going to go topless a little bit so I don’t get sunbathing straps, and we said, okay, all of us. Then she said, I’m just going to bathe in this thong, and we were like, yup, us too. And by the end, we were basically naked the whole time.

Angel Trinidad, 30, Amsterdam, with boyfriend

    Profession: editor and writer

    Stayed: Vifarnaholme, July 2014

Project: writing a book on Swedish coffee and cake culture

When you’re there, you’re more calm. Time is super slow and you have all the time in the world to flesh it out. It’s more productive because there are no distractions. You can’t go to the mall or anything. We didn’t leave the island for seven days. We got food for the whole stay and just stayed there.

It was a peaceful and worry-free time, which is really important when you’re trying to create something or trying to think of new ideas just to have the time and space to just be. The first few days, I was like, I should come up with something now — that kind of pressure — but after a few days, you feel more at ease with it and then I realized I could just sit here and let it come to me.

I thought seven days sounded like a long time. I thought I would be bored or have a lot of idle time. … But it’s the perfect time for becoming, for taking the time to develop.

Idriz Zogaj, 40, Gothenburg, Sweden, with one friend

    Profession: memory coach and entrepreneur

    Stayed: Philippines, 2012

Project: children’s book, educational materials for schoolteachers and a board game

We didn’t have generated electricity, we had solar panels, so you [wake] up when the sun goes up and you go to sleep when the sun goes down. Even when you wake at 6am, you feel completely rested. It makes you calmer. So you work in a completely different rhythm. I could focus on work and then relax and do something I really love, like snorkeling. After a couple days, you completely lose track of time. You’re there to finish this task and you work when you want to work.

You don’t have to go to Ideas Island to experience the feeling. You have to make time in your calendar and have no obligations to anyone else.

Diego Signoretto, 30, Montagnana, Italy, with girlfriend

    Profession: musician and guitar teacher

Stayed: Vifarnaholme and Svanholmen, August 2015

    Project: to record music

It was like food for the mind. There are no distractions. The first days, I was really tired from my job. I just relaxed and started to enjoy the place. I read a lot, enjoyed the island, swam, played some guitar and took a lot of photos. To record, I needed to use the computer and I didn’t want to come back to technology immediately. On the third day. I was more relaxed. I connected the cable and started to record without thinking about it, so I was ready.

Ninety percent of the work was the island because it’s impossible to do something well if you must do it, if you can’t take your time. I wasn’t worried about [anything]. I forgot where I was, where I came from.

Project: after selling most of his possessions, he traveled the world for 18 months and spend his time on the island reflecting on his life and the journey he was just beginning

The island’s tranquility and peace came at the right time for me to reflect on all the things I was trying to get out of my trip. It gave me time for reflection — I was trying to connect with nature, so I built a small pathway that led down from the bottom end of the island to the bay. I spent days there in the trees, working on that and getting in touch with nature and working with Mother Earth, which was really quite spiritual in a sense. There were days I paddled the boat out to the middle of the lake and sat there watched the sunrise and sunsets and had those experiences alone that a lot of people dream about but never get to have.

    Project: Writing

I applied to work on my startup and writing, but when I finally got there, I mostly did drawing. It’s easy to go there with the mindset that now I’m really going to get stuff done but it’s also really easy to procrastinate. But I was happy that in my procrastination, I did something that was also creative and productive, which was drawing. When I was a kid, I loved drawing and I thought that I would become a cartoonist, but that never happened.

You almost never get that kind of seclusion, and you feel a kind of calm that you don’t experience if you are still at your home or office or studio, because you’re completely left alone and undisturbed. Some friends came by with their boat and one evening, some people living nearby had caught so much fish and they asked if I wanted some spare fish for dinner. That was very nice, but other than that, it was a rare opportunity to be left alone, not be alone, but left alone — and not have other trivial stuff from your everyday life sneak up and bother you.
