  • L.A.’s famous ‘Hobbit Houses’ have a new owner. He calls himself the ‘King of Storybook’

In the architectural age of minimalism and millennial gray, a wild and whimsical antidote made of old clinker bricks and jumbled shingles sits on a quiet street at the edge of L.A. and Culver City.

Formally, the spellbinding property is named the Lawrence and Martha Joseph Residence and Apartments, named after the Disney artist and his wife who obsessively spent three decades building it. But locals call them the Hobbit Houses — fitting, since they look straight out of a J.R.R. Tolkien novel.

The complex looks comically out of place amid Culver City’s commercial corridor along Venice Boulevard. It’s surrounded by modern apartment buildings, boxy and inoffensive, built to blend in with today’s taste.

A bathroom in one of the Hobbit houses in Culver City adorned in glass tiles and ornate fixtures.

Amid that urban blur, the Hobbit Houses beg for your attention.

An electric lamppost flickers, mimicking fire. The tree in the front yard features a face, with eyes and a nose. The homes are filled with quirky leaded glass windows, uneven angles and heaps of wood shingles, resembling a thatched straw roof.

This year, the property hit the market for the first time. Offers poured in, and it sold to perhaps the most fitting possible buyer outside Bilbo Baggins himself: real estate agent Michael Libow.

At $1.88 million, Libow didn’t have the highest bid. His main qualification was that he owns and lives in one of the finest examples of Storyboook style in the region: the Witch’s House, a medieval-looking masterpiece that is more befitting a “Hansel and Gretel” adaptation than the streets of Beverly Hills.

The broker, seeing his connection to the style, promoted Libow to the seller, an out-of-state bank trust. The Hobbit Houses were his.

“It’s like a companion piece to my own home,” Libow said. “It’s a little oasis in a city that’s been overdeveloped.”

Now that he owns both, Libow has declared himself, tongue-in-cheek, the “King of Storybook,” and said he intends to protect the property and be a spokesperson for the style.

“This is my legacy: bringing a little bit of joy to as many people as I can,” he said. “It’s about preservation, but it’s also about bringing a sense of awe and wonder to the world.”

The Hobbit Houses are one of Southern California’s finest examples of Storybook architecture, a fantasy style that fittingly emerged in L.A. in the 1920s around the start of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Inspired by cinema setpieces and centuries-old European cottages, architects designed playful homes with turrets and gables on the outside and nooks and crannies on the inside. When done well, the finished product looks lifted from a fairy tale.

Disney artist Lawrence Joseph built the Hobbit Houses from 1946 to 1970. Over the years, the property developed a lore all its own. He rented out spare units to Hollywood tenants such as actor Nick Nolte and dancer Gwen Verdon, and the place also housed one of the men who kidnapped Frank Sinatra’s son (authorities found most of the ransom money Sinatra paid, $240,000, in one of the units).

Lawrence died in 1991, and his wife, Martha, got to work protecting the property. She obtained landmark status in 1996 and donated an easement to the Los Angeles Conservancy, ensuring that it can’t be remodeled or torn down.

The property, which includes nine units across four buildings, needed some work when he bought it, so Libow and his property manager, Ben Stine, have spent the last few months playing a developer’s version of “Minesweeper,” trying to make small improvements for the tenants — electric work, a tankless water heater — without disrupting anything protected by the L.A. Conservancy easement.

The Hobbit Houses came with a 15-page report detailing all the things protected on the property: not just the buildings themselves, but also the facade, landscape features and the interiors, including the custom furniture that Lawrence carved himself. Even the wallpaper can’t be touched.

“Protections within a structure are very unusual. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Libow said.

That means for renters, much of the furniture is included with the rent. The latest vacant unit — a two-bed, one-bath with a den — includes bar stools and a rocking chair that Lawrence carved.

The house is wrapped in clinker brick, a term for when clay bricks are set too close to the flames when being fired in a kiln, giving them distorted shapes and colors. Such bricks were sometimes trashed in older architectural eras, but these days, they’re prized for the unique look they bring to buildings, and perfectly natural for Middle Earth architecture in Culver City.

Inside, Lawrence’s sailing background shines through with nautical-themed interiors. A ship’s wheel serves as the chandelier, hanging above vertical-grain boat-plank floors that lead to a galley-style kitchen with a curvy bar.

“The idea behind Storybook is to have something fanciful and whimsical, which involves movement rather than rectilinear rooms,” Libow said. “There’s barely a right angle on the entire property. Everything’s amorphous in shape.”

There are no knobs to be found; doors open with hidden latches and levers. A built-in fold-down desk pops out in the living room. In the master bedroom, a “cat door” slides open to provide easy access for felines that hang around the property.

The nine units range from 200 square feet to 1,200 square feet. The vacant unit, which spans around 1,000 square feet, hit the market a few months ago for $4,500 per month.

It’s a high price for the neighborhood — most two-bedroom apartments nearby fall in the $3,000 range — but interested renters still swarmed.

“These aren’t your typical tenants that need four walls and a sink. We get a lot of people in the creative industry,” Libow said. “You’re renting a lifestyle here.”

Libow said like his own home, which serves as a regular stop for Hollywood tour buses, the Hobbit Houses are a regular resting point for people walking through the neighborhood.

“Construction workers will walk by on their lunch to look at the turtles in the pond. It’s a break from reality, even if just for a minute,” he said.

Libow and his property manager spend a lot of time on the grounds, looking for projects or small improvements they’re allowed to make under the conservancy. But for Libow, who bought it as a collector’s item as much as an investment, it’s a labor of love.

“It’s not the most functional style of architecture, but it is the coolest,” he said. “It’s weird, but I’m weird myself. I connect with weird.”

  • Election night in Mass.: Voters choose new leaders in city races

Tuesday was a busy election night across Massachusetts.

While there were no statewide races on the ballot, city’s and towns made decisions about leadership.

In Everett, voters ousted a long-term incumbent in Mayor Carlo DeMaria, who has been in office since 2008, electing City Councilor Robert Van Campen.

“Tonight, in a resounding voice — you see these numbers? — They affirm they’re ready for change, they’re ready to write a new chapter,” the mayor-elect said.

The race for mayor in Boston may be a foregone conclusion, but there are big races for City Council being settled on Tuesday.

In an interview last week, Van Campen cited an audit finding DeMaria received $180,000 more than he should have in longevity payments as a catalyst for his campaign.

Asked to explain what type of change he intended to bring, Van Campen said, “Bringing greater transparency and accountability at City Hall. I want to look at school overcrowding.”

In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu, running unopposed since Josh Kraft dropped out after placing a distant second in September’s preliminary race, spoke Tuesday night about her upcoming second term.

“When we say Boston doesn’t back down, what we mean is Boston always shows up,” she said.

While the results were still being counted Tuesday night, incumbents had leads in city council races, including in the citywide at-large race.

District 7 was an open race after former City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson resigned following her guilty plea to federal fraud charges. Miniard Culpepper declared victory Tuesday over Said Ahmed.

“I think this district is a heartbeat of the city, and how this district goes, I think, will determine how this city goes,” Culpepper told NBC10 Boston.

Fernandes Anderson resigned in July, and councilors had asked state lawmakers to allow for an early swear-in of the November election’s winner. That bill is still stalled on Beacon Hill.

“I may not have the council office, I might not have the council staff, but running the campaign, I didn’t have that, and I still met with folks,” said Culpepper.

Two sitting at-large councilors — Ruthzee Louijeune and Henry Santana — joined Wu on stage. Along with Erin Murphy and Julia Mejia, the incumbents occupy the top four spots with the votes still being counted.

“I love this city, and I’m ready to give it all, continue to give it my all,” Santana said.

All these election totals are preliminary, final results will be tallied and certified by city and state election officials.

Elsewhere in Massachusetts, Lawrence Mayor Brian DePeña was reelected to a second term. And Somerville voters elected Jake Wilson over Willie Burnley Jr. after both placed ahead of Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, knocking her out in September’s primary.

  • Anthony Mauriello, Chelmsford football team blast Lawrence, 33-12

CHELMSFORD — Anthony Mauriello finally got to enjoy some home cooking Wednesday night.

The Chelmsford quarterback celebrated senior night in style, rushing for a pair of touchdowns, while throwing for a third, as the Lions (4-4) leveled Lawrence, 33-12.

“It feels good back to .500,” said Mauriello. “It’s a big step up from where we were. I’m just excited to be here.”

Still searching for their first home win of the season, Mauriello gave his crowd something to cheer about rolling in on a pair of touchdown runs in the first half before putting the game away with a 54-yard bomb to open the second half.

“It feels good to actually play here and win here,” said Chelmsford coach George Peterson. “It was a good night for our seniors. We got every senior in our program, which was 22 of them, an opportunity to get on the field. In a situation like this that’s what were looking for, the opportunity to play here under the lights, which is a special place to play in front of the home crowd. The kids have worked hard for us for four years and it was great that every single one of them got a chance tonight.”

Not bad for a Chelmsford squad that endured a bumpy start, losing its first two games and sporting a 1-4 mark after first five. The Lions managed to turn things around dramatically, however, playing much better defensively the last three weeks, surrendering just 24 points over their last three contests.

“We’ve really tightened up defensively,” said Peterson. “Having Nate Duggan back on the back half of our defense really is a huge thing for us at safety. He brings that physicality for us and helps us run support. That’s been big for us over the past few weeks, especially last week and this week.”

Fresh off a 26-6 win over Westford Academy, the Lions continued their impressive late-season push. Mauriello led the charge. The senior quarterback rolled seven yards for the touchdown on their opening drive, grabbing a 6-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest.

The Lions defense put the squeeze on the Lancers’ counterattack. Senior Kyle DeLuca sacked Lawrence quarterback Manny Perez on their second snap, setting an authoritative tone.

Meanwhile, Mauriello continued to fan the offensive flames. The QB found senior Gable Gray on a big 25-yard gainer to the 17. Senior Oliver Ilg picked it up from there, bursting through on a 1-yard strike, increasing the Chelmsford lead to 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Dropping its last six contests, Lawrence responded late in the opening quarter. Perez hung tough, guiding the Lancers’ offense to the 4 in the closing seconds. The QB eventually connected up with a wide-open Denzel Morales on a 6-yard TD pass with 10:44 remaining in the half.

The Lions offense finished the first half off with a flurry. Mauriello led the charge by marching 30 yards up the middle for his second touchdown. Patrick McConnell’s second PAT of the night made it a 20-6 affair.

“I got great blocks all around,” said Mauriello. “I saw a hole and just took it.”

The Lions recovered a Lawrence fumble on the kickoff return, putting them in prime position yet again.

Mauriello aired things out by finding Dylan Quinn on a 24-yard pass to the six. Joseph Nordengren took it from there, bolting six yards into the end one for the 26-6 lead at halftime.

And when Mauriello hooked up with Quinn again on a long 54-yard bomb in the third quarter, Chelmsford kicked open the floodgates. McConnell’s third PAT increased the Chelmsford cushion to 33-6.

“I was just letting it fly and having fun,” said Mauriello.

According to the Peterson, the QB has come into his own in recent weeks.

“He’s gotten better and better as we’ve progressed,” said Peterson. “He’s starting to have a real confidence about him, a control of the offense. He’s been fantastic the past few weeks.”

The Lancers never gave up scoring a late TD run to cut the deficit to 33-12, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Nordengren ended the game with an interception, putting an exclamation point on the victory.

Next up is a date for the playoffs.

“We’re excited,” said Peterson. “The 6-12 (seed) area is really a mish mash of teams that are all really comparable. There are some teams in front of us. We’ll see what happens to them and then it comes down to the math. It looks like there’s a possibility we play Billerica, which would be an interesting first round facing our Thanksgiving Day rival. We’ll see what happens. We’ve done our part. We’ve put ourselves where we are. We’ll see what happens.”

  • Lawrence General, Holy Family hospitals rebrand with unified name

METHUEN — Across the Merrimack Valley, signs for three longtime health care institutions are coming down.

On Tuesday, mayors, state legislators, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll and other officials gathered outside Holy Family Hospital in Methuen to hear the new name for the medical facility and those for Holy Family Hospital in Haverhill and Lawrence General Hospital.

  • Lawrence city councilor pleads guilty to voter fraud charges

A city councilor for Lawrence, Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty to voter fraud charges, prosecutors said Thursday.

Councilor Fidelina Santiago admitted on Wednesday to four counts each of charges of voting unlawfully, interfering with a voter and obstructing voting, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

Santiago is due for sentencing on Oct. 9. It wasn’t immediately clear if she planned to stay in office.

She was charged in 2023, along with another woman, on 16 counts — prosecutors opted not to proceed on four counts of conspiracy to vote or attempt to vote illegally, they said Thursday.

A Lawrence, Massachusetts, elected official, along with another woman, were charged with voter fraud. This all stems from last month’s municipal election.

  • Man arrested in Christmas Eve killing at Lawrence nightclub

Man arrested in Christmas Eve killing at Lawrence nightclub

A man is in custody nine months after he allegedly killed another man at a night club in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Twenty-nine-year-old Edward Javier-Perez was shot to death at the Energy Lounge on Christmas Eve in 2023.

The Essex County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday that 27-year-old Franklin Laras of Lawrence was in custody, but did not say where he was apprehended.

In March, the U.S. Marshals announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to Laras’ arrest, noting he was considered armed and dangerous.

The Energy Lounge will be temporarily closed after a man was shot and killed there on Christmas Eve.

In the wake of the shooting, Energy Lounge’s license to operate was suspended

“This decision was made in part due to fact that the matter is under investigation by the Lawrence Police Department and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office,” Lawrence police said in a statement days after the shooting. “Furthermore, the nature of the incident, with the perpetrator(s) still at large, the Acting Chief has determined that in the interest of public safety, the City must close the establishment and suspend the establishments license to operate until such time that the investigation is complete. This immediate action is being taken on an expedited basis due to the overriding public safety concern.”

Javier-Perez’ girlfriend, Gerimar Maria, previously said she wanted his killer to be caught.

“We want justice,” she said. “We don’t want anyone to get hurt. Just justice.”

Laras will be arraigned Friday at Essex County Superior Court in Salem. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

  • George Miller Reveals How Many Visual Effects Are in Furiosa

George Miller Reveals How Many Visual Effects Are in Furiosa

Everyone knows the magic of George Miller is his practical effects. The Max Max filmmaker loves to do actual stunts and capture them in-camera, and the results are masterful. But what maybe not everyone knows is that Miller’s films, in particular Mad Max: Fury Road and the new Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, have a ton of visual effects. Like, a lot. More than you can possibly imagine. He just doesn’t use them only in obvious ways.

In Fury Road, in [Furiosa], there are hardly any shots that haven’t been manipulated digitally,” Miller told io9. “For instance, changing the sky. When Steven Spielberg shot Jaws, the sea was changing all the time. If you look at that film one moment it’s choppy, one moment it’s flat. You don’t need to do that anymore.”

So basically every shot in both Fury Road and Furiosa has some kind of digital changes to it. But, for the most part, it’s subtle stuff. The Furiosa scene Miller pointed to was “The Stowaway,” one of the film’s middle chapters and also its longest, most sprawling action sequence. In it, Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) tries to escape the Citadel but instead finds herself in an epic battle versus a group of Wasteland pirates.

“When you’re doing extended sequences like ‘The Stowaway’ sequence, that was shot over 78 days. It’s a 15-minute sequence but the skies are consistent,” Miller said. “So we took what we thought was a good sky and we can reproduce that sky right through the story. So some shots have the real sky because the real sky looked really good. But in the next shot, it might have been where it was a completely different sky so we were able to match that. You can do that.”

The film clearly has other digital effects too but Miller is mostly a fan of the ones that are invisible and keep everything smooth and cohesive. It’s a huge game-changer. “If you were shooting Jaws again today, the sea would be consistent,” He said. “Even meticulous filmmakers, guys like David Lean when they shot Lawrence of Arabia—obsessively, meticulous with their camera and lighting and so on—you can see where they shot different times of day and so on. You can avoid it now to some degree. It’s a much smoother experience.”

Visually, Furiosa might be a smooth experience but the experience overall is anything but, in the best possible way. It’s now in theaters.

Man fatally shot in Lawrence, suspected gunman arrested

A man was fatally shot in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Wednesday night and his suspected killer was arrested, authorities said.

Jason Rivera was charged with murder and is being held without bail, the Essex District Attorney’s Office and Lawrence police said in a statement Thursday.

The shooting took place on or near Margin Street on Wednesday evening, authorities said. The man who was shot was rushed to a local hospital, then a Boston hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He hasn’t been identified.

It wasn’t immediately clear when or how Rivera was arrested, or if the 28-year-old from Lawrence had an attorney who could speak to the charge. He was due back in court May 17.

    The shooting remained under investigation.

  • Lawrence police cracking down on illegal dirt bikes

Lawrence police cracking down on illegal dirt bikes

Confiscated dirt bikes are winding up back on the roads in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and investigators say it’s causing problems.

Tow truck companies are being asked to transport the bikes to their yards after they’ve been confiscated and it’s those same tow truck companies that are reselling the bikes back to people in the community, according to Lawrence police.

Council President Jeovanny Rodriguez and Police Chief William Castro are now issuing new warnings to these riders as the problem now is nearing a breaking point.

Video shows riders popping wheelies, driving on the sidewalk, reckless driving and running red lights.

Last year, a new ordinance was passed prohibiting gas stations in the city from selling gas to dirt bike and ATV riders. Gas stations that do, will be subjected to a fine and those riders will be hit with heavy charges.

“We are out there. We are taking pictures, we are getting the videos together and at the end of the day, we are going to prosecute these individuals,” said Castro. “No tolerance…you are not going to like what we are going to do to these ATVs and motorcycle, when you are faced with these cases.”

Officials said the gas stations are currently being reminded of the consequences and ramifications and so are the tow truck companies.

  • Composer & Pop Star Ryuichi Sakamoto Has Died

Composer & Pop Star Ryuichi Sakamoto Has Died

    Photo: Isa Foltin (Getty Images)

Ryuichi Sakamoto, the famed Japanese musician and composer, has died at the age of 71.

He had been battling failing health for several years, having been diagnosed in 2014 with throat cancer, then bowel cancer in 2021. Through all his treatments and surgeries, however, he continued to write music and perform, even giving an online performance as recently as December 2022.

Sakamoto is perhaps best known for his work composing the score to several films, especially The Last Emperor (for which he won an Academy Award), The Last Buddha, The Revenant (which saw him nominated for a Golden Globe) and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, in which he also appeared on-screen alongside David Bowie.

Yet he was also famous for his earlier pop career, both as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, an electronic group that was huge in Japan in the early 80s. YMO had an impact on Western musicians and markets as well; their song “Computer Game” charted in the UK, and they appeared live on Soul Train in 1980.

Over his decades-long career writing music Sakamoto even worked on a few video games, from 1989 RPG Tengai Makyou: Ziria, the first game in the long-running Far East of Eden series, to 2006’s Dawn of Mana, for which he composed the opening theme (for more on this surprisingly excellent but also confusing credit, see here)

His most recent contribution to a video game was 2014’s wonderful Hohokum, in which (among other excellent selections) the track Reticent Reminiscence, a collaboration between Sakamoto and electronic musician Christopher Willits, appears.

Sakamoto died on March 28, with the announcement of his passing coming after his funeral on April 2. He is survived by his four children, one of whom is Japanese pop star Miu Sakamoto.
