Skyfire’s Tethered Drones Used for the First Time to Secure The Big Game

    Press Release

    updated: Feb 4, 2019

Most of the attention on drones around the NFL Championship Game in Atlanta has been focused on the dozen or so drone operators snagged by the FBI for illegally flying ahead of the big game.

But drones were also being used to help secure the very same event.

Skyfire, the nation’s leading public safety UAS experts, in coordination with the Georgia World Congress Center Authority, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and a team of pilots, security experts and software partners, deployed two tethered drones high above Atlanta – overlooking the events surrounding The Big Game – at the ready in case of an emergency.

“This is one of the first times drones have been used to secure a large, tier 1 event,” said Matt Sloane, CEO of Skyfire. “We are honored that these agencies entrusted us with overwatch for one of the biggest events in our state’s history.”

Based in Decatur, Georgia, just seven miles from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Sloane and his team worked for more than a year to secure the necessary approvals from the FAA, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security to operate for the event.

“It was interesting to coordinate and fly drones just a few hundred feet below Black Hawk helicopters,” said Sloane, ”and we were just a few thousand feet from the biggest sporting event in the world.”

The team worked closely with the State of Georgia’s air operations support center and was in constant communication with the FAA and the FBI to ensure the safety of the operation.

Sloane also had Mike Briant on his team, a veteran law enforcement and counter-terrorism specialist from the Skydas Group, to help determine areas of interest and concern.

“Real-time, actionable information for the guys on the ground is essential and allows you to respond much more quickly to a critical incident than you could having to rely on traditional aviation assets,” said Briant. “The drones allow security specialists to spot unusual behavior long before they reach the main venue.”

Each of the setups consisted of the DJI Matrice 210 aircraft, a Zenmuse Z30 zoom camera, as well as the DJI/FLIR Zenmuse XT2 thermal imaging camera. Each drone was flown to a maximum altitude of 200 feet above ground and was secured and powered by Drone Aviation Corp’s FUSE tethering system.

The video feeds were streamed through the DroneSense software platform and viewed by law enforcement command centers in over a dozen locations.

“Drones can help make large events like this one safer by gathering information in a way that no other platform can,” said Ryan Bracken, business development lead for DroneSense and a former FBI special agent. “But that intelligence, whether it’s a video stream or other data, has to get to the right people in real time to make it usable, and that’s where our software excels.”

Sloane says this is the first of many large-scale events his team plans to respond to and looks forward to working with federal law enforcement and the FAA to demonstrate how drones can be used effectively and safely around massive crowds of people.

“This technology is game-changing and although big federal agencies have a slew of helicopters with many of these same sensors, there are areas that are just too small or unsafe for large manned aircraft,” said Sloane. “Drone technology is the perfect adjunct to helicopters and allows us to exponentially increase security flights without adding significant cost.”

  • Drones Saving More Lives, Being Adopted by More Public Safety Agencies, Reports Skyfire Consulting

Drones Saving More Lives, Being Adopted by More Public Safety Agencies, Reports Skyfire Consulting

    Press Release

    updated: Jul 11, 2018

Small unmanned aerial vehicles, colloquially known as drones, are being adopted by more public safety agencies around the world than ever before; and the number of lives they’re saving is climbing dramatically.

On one recent day, four people were saved by drones, in three separate incidents around the world.

We are seeing more and more life-saving stories coming out of these agencies. This technology can no longer be written off as a ‘toy’ or a plaything. It’s a front-line tool in public safety, and it’s already saving lives.

    Matt Sloane, CEO, Skyfire Consulting

Drone manufacturer DJI calls it a “marked new milestone in public safety drone use,” in a press release issued last month.

On May 31st, Wayne Township Fire Department in Indiana used a drone to drop a life jacket to a fleeing suspect, who had gotten himself into a near drowning situation in a lake.

On that same day, officials in a Texas town near Dallas dropped life jackets to a mother and daughter who found themselves in rising floodwater; and police in the UK used a drone with a thermal imaging camera to find a stranded hiker on a dangerous cliff.

“We are seeing more and more life-saving stories coming out of these agencies,” says Matt Sloane, CEO of Skyfire Consulting, a group who works with public safety agencies to adopt drone programs.

“This technology can no longer be written off as a ‘toy’ or a plaything. It’s a front-line tool in public safety, and it’s already saving lives.”

For many agencies, including the Wayne Township Fire Department, the technology has been a game-changer.

“In my 32 years working in Public Safety the UAV is one of the most exciting tools to come along that improves first responder safety and efficiency,” said Captain Mike Pruitt, Wayne Township’s UAV program manager. “The possibilities of what we can do with these aircraft are endless.”

Pruitt, who worked with Skyfire to start his drone program, says he’s flying the departments’ aircraft several times a week in his area, and in other parts of Indiana where he’s called to assist.

They even flew last week in heavy downpours with DJI’s Matrice 210 aircraft, a water-resistant drone.

More than 900 public safety agencies around the country are flying drones, according to a recent Bard College study, up 200% from last year’s report, but this is only the tip of the drone iceberg, says Sloane.

“There are over 100-thousand public agencies in the US,” he says. “Early adopters like Wayne Township are showing the other 99-thousand agencies out there that this technology can be implemented safely, effectively, and will truly save lives.”

Skyfire has worked with over 120 of those 900 agencies, including the Los Angeles Fire Department, Orlando Fire Department, Miami-Dade Fire, and most recently, Houston Fire.

“Big and small, our clients are taking their response capabilities to the next level, and I don’t see this trend slowing down anytime soon,” Sloane says.

Skyfire will be holding a public safety UAV symposium with Memorial Villages Police Department and Houston Fire Department July 30th and 31st in the Houston Area.
