Festive and fine, the “Go Girl” rapper continued her holiday tradition by donating gifts from trendy brands to her hometown of South Atlanta in the heart of Clayton County.

With flicks and photos going viral, fans congratulated the “Somebody” stunner, not only because she gave back to the babies, but because they think she’s expecting one of her own.

As previously reported, pregnancy predictions started in October when social media sleuths claimed Latto had a baby bump showing onstage at the Force Festival in Japan.

Between Latto seemingly soft-launching her long-rumored relationship with 21 Savage, the beachside baecation photos, and his lyrics about pulling a Russell Wilson on someone in cheetah print, fans claimed the conception commotion wasn’t a reach.

Fans are debating Latto’s new “Big Mama, no kids” lyric after her 5th annual Christmas in Clayco giveaway because they (still) suspect she might be pregnant, but is that what her newest birthday photos are giving?

The benevolent baddie posted a super sweet recap of the event, full of adorable children’s smiling faces. With flicks and photos going viral, fans congratulated the “Somebody” stunner, not only because she gave back to the babies, but because they think she’s expecting one of her own.

As BOSSIP previously reported, pregnancy predictions started in October when social media sleuths claimed Latto had a baby bump showing onstage at the Force Festival in Japan. Between Latto seemingly soft-launching her long-rumored relationship with 21 Savage, the beachside baecation photos, and his lyrics about pulling a Russell Wilson on someone in cheetah print, fans claimed the conception conjecture wasn’t a reach – it was an expected next step for the suspected covert couple.

That also begs the question: What’s the tea on the giant diamonds on Latto’s ring finger?

Latto has quietly stayed booked and busy since then, but that never stopped fans from minding the baddie’s business.

See why the baby buzz is back and what internet investigators claim are clues after the flip!

Here’s Why Fans (Still) Speculate That Latto Is Pregnant After Her Christmas In Clayco Giveaway

Social media couldn’t resist the rumors when they saw the latest photos and video of Latto from her foundation’s event. Fans claim the biggest evidence is her outfit. Rather than pulling an Ice Spice scandal, the Clayco cutie regularly keeps it classy and covered for her child-centered event. Yet, even for winter, Latto’s floor-length fur fashion raised eyebrows as a little bit too covered up.

The stunning coat and white boots fit the Christmas theme, but seemed out of place compared to past years’ shorts and tights combo or strapless dress. Even when Latto tones down her sexy style, fans claimed they’ve never seen her banging body as hidden as it was in the massive fur, which appeared to stay tightly fastened through the whole event.

As “Latto pregnant” started to trend on X, a few posts noted that we haven’t seen much of Latto since Force Fest, except for Mariah The Scientist and 21 Savage’s birthday parties.

When Latto popped out last week, it only added fuel to the fierce speculation.

In a video teasing Latto’s new “Pop It” song with 21, she kept it real, pulling up in a luxury car for her favorite meal from McDonald’s. For the outfit, Latto once again rocked a larger-than-life fur and kept it closed the whole time, prompting more pregnancy chatter.

Cardi B similarly showed out in her Imaginary Playerz teaser, which first sparked speculation of a pregnancy because she strutted her stuff with the coat still open. When the Cardi was close to announcing her bundle of joy, she also rocked oversized clothes for her album promotion and a huge fur coat at NYFW.

Fans joked this is what she meant by “pop out, brand new body like I’m Cardi in this motherf**ker.” Or are her floor-length furs just another rich flex? It seems Latto can’t beat the allegations if she shows off her body or covers it up.

Check out Latto seemingly responding to pregnancy rumors and her latest sizzling star snaps after the flip!

Latto Shuts Down Pregnancy Rumors With Stunning Snaps & Her New Lyric: “Big Mama, No Kids!”

However, Latto did throw some shade at the speculation. When the rumors started after her performance in Japan, she posted a photo from that day with her typically toned abs showing. She hilariously captioned the now-deleted post with a joke that she “ate tew much wagyu & ramen.”

Latto clapped back in another teaser last month, where she went on a designer shopping spree (with a mystery man who looked a lot like 21 in the background). She rocked a flowing cheetah print set and flashed her abs as she rapped, “Big Mama, no kids!”

For some, that clip meant it was case closed on the baby rumors.

If that wasn’t enough of a fact-check, for Latto’s birthday on Monday, she showed off her super snatched figure in a stunning set of Christmas-themed photos. In every picture, she absolutely ate, from winter wonderland white with ice skate stilettos to popping out of a gift box with a cheetah print ribbon. Even Santa himself had to pull up with a cheetah print birthday cake with “Capricorn Szn” written on it. We see you, birthday baddie!

The rumors about Latto are all fun and games to social media strangers, but she gives fans so much that no one could blame her for not sharing every detail about her personal life. The world will clearly have plenty to say either way. Real supporters will wish her the best for whatever she does next. It could be her new album, a matching pajamas pop-out with her boo, or even a possible little Latto on the way. Or maybe all three?

It looks like Latto might have already dropped a not-so-subtle hint about another big announcement.

She showed off two fresh plates, complete with some garlic bread and a little basil. In her caption, she revealed it’s one of her man’s favorite meals to eat. She didn’t name 21 Savage, but fans immediately started speculating, saying she must be talking about him since they were recently spotted on what looked like a lil’ baecation together and have been speculated to be dating for years.

Latto’s Cooking Skills Have The Internet Talking

But they definitely had social media thinking they go together after video footage surfaced of them out in St. Vincent in August. On top of that, a restaurant on the island added a lil’ fuel to the speculation after they shared a photo of 21 posted up with some of the staff. Fans immediately went off on the spot for airing out the rappers after they tagged Latto in the pic when she wasn’t in it. The establishment defended themselves though, writing, “She was there too,” even though Big Mama didn’t pose for the flick.

But while the internet ate up the images, folks started dragging a dining spot in St. Vincent for allegedly tagging Latto in a photo and basically outing her for allegedly being with 21 when she didn’t appear in a pic with him.

Yup, a whole restaurant put Big Mama and Savage on blast after someone on social media called them out for tagging Latto in a pic she wasn’t even in. The restaurant quickly defended itself, though, responding with, “She was there with him too,” alongside some fire emojis.

  • Is It Giving Baecation? Latto & 21 Savage Reignite Romance Rumors In Seemingly Boo’d Up Boat Pics

    [ad_1]

First Megan Thee Stallion, now Big Mama? After years of Latto’s hints about her man, her man, her man, cameras seemingly caught her slipping with 21 Savage on vacation. And fans aren’t just here for it, they’ve BEEN here for the rumored romance.

    Source: Paras Griffin/Prince Williams

Finally?! What’s the secret to a long-lasting relationship at the top of the rap game? If this celebrity sighting is any indication, the cheat code is romantic getaways and staying out the way! Latto has been gushing and blushing about the mystery man who has her heart (and her ClayCo clappas) on lock, but never popped out with him publicly… until now. Is it giving baecation?

Latto previously warned social media sleuths to “get off them tea pages,” but IG Model Tea Room is spilling on this rare public appearence. Speculation was swirling since 2020, but neither officially confirmed the coupledom. As artists on the Atlanta scene, they regularly attend the same events but kept it strictly professional. The rappers even shared the stage during Latto’s headlining Birthday Bash performance, but a vacation sighting together? That’s a first!

The alleged celebrity couple didn’t pack on the PDA in the blurry photos but looked very cozy in the pics and clips of them stepping off a boat together.

Previously, fans suspected 21 was only visible in the literal shadows or blurry backgrounds of the “Brokey” baddie’s posts. However, they weren’t exactly keeping it a secret that they’re locked in.

Despite their denials, eagle-eyed fans clocked that Latto inked her rumored British boo’s real name (Shéyaa) behind her ear in 2023. The next year, 21 showed off his new braids and a matching tattoo of Latto’s government name (Alyssa) behind his ear. Case closed, innit?

Even though the resounding response was that “we BEEN knew,” social medida flooded with reactions to the suspected lowkey lovers.

One social media confusingly claimed that 21 is still with his wife.

The relationship status with Keyanna Joseph remains unclear, but last year she posted a photo of the “Rich Flex” rapper with their son.

What do you think of this latest chapeter in the rumored romance between Latto and 21 Savage?

Latto shows why she’s a ‘Georgia Peach’ during One Musicfest performance

    [ad_1]

Photo by Laura Nwogu/The Atlanta Voice

After Cardi B dropped out of headlining One Musicfest on Wednesday after hospitalization, there were questions on who would be replacing the “Bodak Yellow” superstar. But amid the questions, one name rang loudly: Latto.

The “Georgia Peach” and “Big Mama” rapper may have been a last-minute replacement, but she commanded the stage as if she was always meant to be the main performer. She was preceded by a set from DJ Drama and performances by Jeremiah and 2 Chainz. However, while their sets were filled with high energy, anticipation for Latto’s performance crescendoed into impatience.

When it hit 10:15 p.m. with no sign of Latto and 15 minutes left of the allotted time at the P&G stage, that impatience was evident when DJ Drama asked if he could play one more song.

    “No,” the crowd yelled.

“Alright, dim the lights. Get ready for Big Latto,” he said.

Photo by Kerri Phox/The Atlanta Voice

About 5 minutes later and with only two days of preparation, Latto burst onto the stage with her recent hit, “Georgia Peach,” a love letter to her roots.

The performance came a day before the start of the North American tour for her third studio album “Sugar Honey Iced Tea.” Her appointment as the new headliner was a sort of redemption for her fans who criticized her lack of an Atlanta date on her tour, a glaring miss for her hometown.

“Let’s treat this like we’re on tour,” she said to the crowd of hundreds who packed Central Park and waited over an hour to see her perform.

In a cropped fur jacket and leather shorts, she performed hits such as “Brokey,” “Put it on Da Floor Again,” “Nasty,” and “Muwop,” the latter two of which were assists from Southern rappers Boosie and Gucci Mane early in her mainstream career. Her 20-minute performance was filled with slick and raunchy rap lyrics, dancing, and an attempt to pay the rent for someone celebrating their birthday (an attempt that failed after two people lied about their birth date).

“What do I get for my birthday,” Latto sang. Unfortunately, those two OMF-goers did not find out, but the performance, while not without its problems, was a last-minute gift in and of itself.

Ice Spice Insists She & Nicki Minaj Are ‘Good’ After Calling Her ‘Delusional’ In Leaked Texts, Says She Has ‘No Issue’ With Latto

    Source: John Nacion / Getty

During her recent cover story for Rolling Stone, the “Princess Diana” rapper touched on all the topics fans have been wondering about in recent months.

As highlighted in RS’s story, text messages Ice Spice sent to a former friend surfaced online earlier this year. In the texts, Ice Spice admitted to being frustrated while negotiating contract details with Nicki Minaj. Because of those hardships, she referred to her “Barbie World” collaborator as “delusional” and “ungrateful.”

Neither rapper acknowledged the leak when it happened, causing Internet rumors about their once seemingly-close relationship to run amok. Now Ice is setting the record straight.

“We don’t have the closest relationship, you know? But we’re definitely good,” Ice Spice told Rolling Stone of her friendship with Minaj. “We’re mutuals. We had smash records together…I love us together. I think the world does too.”

Unsurprisingly, the relationship between Ice and the friend who leaked those texts did suffer.

“I think that the saddest part of the whole situation, it’s somebody I knew for so many years and called my friend had me open up and be vulnerable with them, and then took complete advantage of that for her own benefit,” the rapper said. “So that was the saddest part really, just feeling used, basically.”

Elsewhere in her interview, the Bronx native also touched on her rumored beef with Latto and other women in the rap game.

“I just feel like that narrative is so dead,” Ice said of drama between female rappers. “There are so many rap girls that have just done so many big things simultaneously. It’s not like one or the other. There’s so many different flavors to choose from now.”

When speaking on Latto, specifically, the “Deli” rapper insists there’s no problem—at least, not on her part.

“I feel like if we ever spoke and I asked her, ‘What’s the issue?’ it’d be like a blank stare,” Ice says. “It’d really be no issue whatsoever. Especially from me.”

While referring to Latto seemingly dissing her with a cake referencing one of Ice Spice’s songs, she calls it a joke that the other rapper has tried to milk for too long.

“I can understand a friendly competition, but I just feel like at this point it’s a joke that she’s just dragged out, and it’s just not even funny,” Ice told Rolling Stone. “Like, bro, ‘Think U the S**t’ is from January. You’re going to post a piece of shit cake to announce something that’s good news for you? But it is kind of a compliment because you’re taking something that’s supposed to be a fun moment for you and you’re making it about me … again.”

The rapper recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Atlanta’s Hot 107.9 radio station, which was released on Tuesday, April 2, via YouTube. The interview appeared to be in anticipation of the rapper headlining Atlanta’s upcoming Birthday Bash concert.

To note, Latto will be the first female rapper to ever headline the event, per The Source.

About two minutes into the six-minute interview, the rapper was asked to share her top three G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) female rappers.

“Kim — gotta say Kim,” Latto began, referring to Brooklyn-bred rapper Lil’ Kim. “Imma say Left Eye — rest in peace, Left Eye and shawty.”

Social Media Speculates She Referred To Nicki Minaj

Social media users entered The Shade Room’s comment section to react to Latto’s list. Many shared their confusion about her mentioning someone as “Shawty.”

Instagram user @kingsilvy wrote, Wait …. Shawty??”

While Instagram user @mocurlsss added, Lord I thought shawty meant shawty lo and I got real confused 🥹🥹”

Instagram user @shanceys wrote, nobody: me on google searching ‘shawty female rapper’ 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭”

However, some explained that they believed she was referring to Nicki Minaj.

Instagram user @iammalikalrahim wrote, Shawty = Nicki Minaj. Of course she’s not going to say her name, but she has always gave Nicki her flowers way before the beef. Latto is a real one for that.”

While Instagram user @jaylen.dupree added, “‘Shawty’ is Nicki. She ain’t gotta say her name tf. It took a certain level of maturity to even still give credit after everything. Some of yall don’t even got that part down.”

Instagram user @shantoria__ wrote, I respect her being real and still giving Nicki(shawty)😂 her props💯”

While Instagram user @jcockerhamofficial added, ‘Shawty’ is definitely Nicki yall if you not from the south it went right over your head 😂”

Instagram user @brittanycity wrote, Love Latto for this actually, too many ppl would let their pride keep them from even saying that”

While Instagram user @mikeb_soxtraa added, It’s clear she still likes Nicki. Nothing wrong with that. Hopefully they talk one day without social media….”

Instagram user @heisolivertwixt wrote,I really feel like Nicki and Latto can be fixed.”

On April 9, Latto seemingly reacted to her own words with a brief tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter.

A Brief Recap Of The Viral Exchange Between The Rappers

As The Shade Room previously reported, Latto and Nicki Minaj’s relationship took a turn in October 2022. At the time, Latto had been nominated for a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance with her hit single, ‘Big Energy.’

Minaj seemingly took offense to the Grammy Board’s nomination. At the time, the GRAMMY board considered her recently released single, ‘Super Freaky Girl,’ pop rather than rap.

“If ‘Super Freaky Girl’ is pop, then so is ‘Big Energy,’” Nicki told fans on Instagram Live. “If you move ‘Super Freaky Girl’ out of rap and put it in pop, do the same thing with ‘Big Energy.’ Same producers on both songs, by the way… Let’s keep s**t fair. Even when I’m rapping on a pop track, I still out rap.”

Shortly after Minaj shared her sentiments, Latto took to X to seemingly share that she couldn’t celebrate her nomination.

In response, Minaj blasted Latto for being “silent” rather than speaking out for her to the Grammy board.

Ultimately, the pair exchanged heated words.

  • Your 2023 Spotify Wrapped Is Ready

Your 2023 Spotify Wrapped Is Ready

    [ad_1]

Every year around December, excitement grows for reasons other than the holiday season. Yes, we all come together to celebrate the release of our
Spotify Wrapped– and what a glorious, joyous time it is for many. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to expose which type of person you are: an Apple Music user or a Spotify user.

Spotify Wrapped can teach you a lot about yourself and others. It reveals the top artists, albums, and songs both globally and in the United States, as well as your own individualized playlist filled with your top songs of the year. Mine, unsurprisingly is
Noah Kahan (and he occupies four of my five top songs).

It can remind you of songs you swore you only listened to once, and exposes you for the kind of listener you truly are. Somehow, One Direction was my top artist for years beyond their indefinite hiatus…some people never change!

    At the
Spotify Wrapped 2023 event yesterday, we got the chance to answer all of your questions for this year’s Wrapped! Let’s dive in.

When Can I See My Spotify Wrapped 2023?

In one of the greatest rivalries of all time, Apple Music released their Wrapped dupe called Replay a day earlier than Spotify…but today, November 29, is when your
2023 Spotify Wrapped graces the app.

@trendpr Spotify Wrapped is trying some new things this year 👀 #2023spotifywrapped #spotifywrapped #2023wrapped ♬ My Love Mine All Mine – Mitski

What’s New To Spotify Wrapped This Year?

This year’s theme was “Wrapped, Or It Didn’t Happen.” In a world of
AI, Spotify wanted to celebrate what’s real: embracing the real moments you experience through music. They wanted to encapsulate the year we’ve had as listeners, so we can appreciate the different cultures and sounds that have been brought to us.

You’ll see more moving parts during the campaign, with bolder colors, bigger digital productions across the world. But there’s more to your Wrapped than just a special playlist based on your listening data. For the first time, you’ll be able to view it on your computer as well.

One of the newest feature is Me, In 2023, where you’re assigned one of twelve listening personalities to tell you a bit more about yourself. For example, I’m an Alchemist, which means I create more playlists and listen to them more than the average user. This, obviously, is not shocking as I curate a
    Weekend Playlist for this website.

There’s also SoundTown, which matches you to a city where you’ll likely meet people who have similar music taste to you. The excitement doesn’t stop there, you’ll be able to see which month you listened to your Top 5 Artists the most and use the Blend feature to see how you and your friends match up.

  • Capitalism Goes Ultra Cringe With Just Eat’s Menulog Commercial Starring Christina Aguilera and Latto

Capitalism Goes Ultra Cringe With Just Eat’s Menulog Commercial Starring Christina Aguilera and Latto

    [ad_1]

For a moment there, it seemed as though everyone was quite quick to bill Christina Aguilera as the “classier” of the two 00s icons of pop stardom, with Britney Spears long ago billed as an “inbred swamp thing” (namely, in a 2007 Rolling Stone cover story). But now, all that “good faith” has officially gone to pot. An appropriate food-related idiom in this case as Aguilera has taken to shilling for Just Eat’s recently-acquired Australian outfit, Menulog. And, although she’s not alone in the endeavor (joined by Latto on rap vocals), something about her stooping to this level is more unexpected than it is from Latto. Some will probably read that as having racist undertones, but no, it’s more about the fact that rapping women of Latto’s generation, including Cardi B (who has plugged everything from Pepsi to Balenciaga) and Ice Spice (currently shilling for Dunkin’ Donuts), have never known an existence in which debasing oneself for money via over-the-top advertising endorsements wasn’t the norm.

To be sure, this has been happening since brands and celebrities long ago unearthed the financial possibilities of their collaborative partnerships but it seemed that, once upon a time, there was a touch more tact to these “synergies.” Even in Aguilera’s “heyday,” circa 1999 to 2006, there was a less schlock-y feel than what she’s just put out into the world with Latto. This could, in part, have to do with print ads being more viable back then, allowing celebrities to say more by saying nothing at all. Just sporting the wares. Of course, in Menulog’s instance, food can’t exactly be sported (unless we’re talking that quintessential scene from Varsity Blues). And so, instead, Aguilera and Latto opt to sing passionately about the many possibilities of the app when it comes to ordering food.

Not least of which includes, per Latto’s rap, “Oh you thought it was just burgers and fries?/They got more flavors than you tasted or you heard in your life.” Already, with the implication that flavors can be “heard,” it’s clear that “sensicality” isn’t exactly what matters. Not in this commercial, and certainly not in life. After all, if life made sense, those with greater privilege wouldn’t abuse those given little other choice but to do a job so abusive and low-paying (especially considering said abuse) as delivering slop for Menulog.

Aguilera is no stranger to the advertising game, of course. In 2003, she followed in Spears’ footsteps by promoting Skechers in a series of print ads (this after Spears had parted ways with Skechers, effectively making Christina Aguilera “sloppy seconds”). Then there have been her more recent ventures, including becoming a spokesperson for Playground (a sexual wellness brand) and Merz Aesthetics. The latter company had Aguilera focusing on the promotion of Xeomin, an injectable intended to reduce between-the-eyebrow-centered frown lines. Ironically, the campaign was called “Beauty On Your Terms.” Of course, if beauty were on anyone’s terms except the patriarchy’s, women wouldn’t be worrying so goddamn much about frown lines, and, in effect, might actually not have as many to try to hide.

At present, Aguilera appears to want to assure that people can “just eat” on their own terms as well. Even if Latto is doing most of the heavy lifting on the lyrical delivery, further assuring viewers, “Ooh, this is what the app do/It ain’t only fast food/Switchin’ styles like opera to rap tunes.” As for that mention of “opera,” this is where both Aguilera and the setting of the commercial itself come in. Presenting a world of “opulence” as both Latto and Aguilera appear in a Versailles-type palace wearing Marie Antoinette-inspired gowns. Because, evidently, when you order from Menulog, it makes you feel like a queen. Or such is the intended seduction of this capitalistic endeavor. One in which even food has to be weaponized as a “status symbol.”

That said, in every scenario where status is involved, someone has to play the part of “lowly servant” in order to make the bourgeoisie feel like they’re in their “higher echelon.” So it is that, whether realizing it or not, the creative team behind the commercial, directed by Dave Meyers, has effectively pitted the haves and have-nots against each other by featuring orange uniform-wearing (perhaps an unwitting nod to how work feels like a prison) delivery folk dancing around Latto and Aguilera, ultimately in a servile position (which includes pushing Latto in a cart). The previous celebrity commercials for Just Eat’s “Did Somebody Say” (featuring Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry, respectively), predicated on the same concept, didn’t parade servility quite so overtly, but when a baroque premise is involved, perhaps it’s more difficult to mask the fact that some people are eating and some people are just hustling to get this bread.

Especially now that delivery has expanded into the grocery store market, which Latto is sure to call out in the lyrics, “And it ain’t only restaurants anymore/We can go bananas at the grocery store.” Even Australian grocery stores, as Menulog is the Just Eat-owned brand being pushed here. And maybe some part of Aguilera agreed to sign on in the hope that the U.S. wouldn’t bother with watching the widely-available ad (such is the curse of the internet rendering all content as viewable to anyone, no matter what country an ad is really being catered to). Latto doesn’t appear to have any sense of shame about doing what needs to be done to collect her paycheck as she continues to do most of the work while Aguilera “ehs” and “ahs” bombastically in the background. However, for most of the “song,” it feels like a solo effort, with Latto also adding, “I’m a bad girl, but my takeout badder/What you need dude? I could cop a taco platter/Thai rice, sticky-icky/Gyoza on the side, fried right ‘cause we kind picky.” As the scene then cuts to the Marie Antoinette-attired duo riding in a gondola through a stream bedecked on either side with fountains, Latto continues, “Breakfast or lunch, hon/Dinner or brunch/Wanna find the finest dining?/I got a hunch.”

We’re then taken back to the interior just after Aguilera softly sings, “And some hot tall dude’s bringing buns to the ballroom.” Heavy-handed sexual innuendo aside, this line also verbally calls out the visuals of servility we’ve seen already. Making it worse still as the rich fetishize the working class as something to be ogled while they work. Ergo, Latto building on that lyric right after by saying, “Got me a strong coffee/Let’s get it on, papi.” Unfortunately, for as harmlessly cracked-out as they thought the lyrics might be (including, “Ice cream with my magazine, who can stop me?”), it only ends up highlighting the chasm between those who work for Just Eat/Menulog and those who order from it. Never mind the fact that those who order from the app are laboring under the false illusion of “luxury” anyway, what with a large portion of restaurants that Just Eat peddles on their website not exactly being fully up to the most hygienic of standards. So there’s that for sticking it to the bourgeoisie, essentially paying to having it “stuck” to them.

As for the seeming “randomness” of tapping Aguilera and Latto for this ad, the entire concept of wielding celebrities to promote Just Eat also speaks to the blueprint of what Bonnie Fuller (the former editor-in-chief of Us Weekly) came up with via the magazine segment known as “Stars: They’re Just Like Us.” In the end, the hoi polloi wants to be reassured, despite all evidence to the contrary, that they’re not the only ones “relegated” to using something as middle-class as Just Eat. And the trick seems to have worked, with positive feedback in the comments section touting, “We want an extended single version of this! Christina sounds incredible and Latto is fire” and “This NEEDS to be a single!!!!”

Does it though? Because it’s rather superfluous to try to pass of the ad as anything other than another cringeworthy hurrah for capitalism (and its place within the celebrity-industrial complex). Aguilera didn’t get that message at all. For, soon after the commercial aired, she took to her Instagram to post a behind-the-scenes video of her and Latto on set, choosing “Can’t Hold Us Down” featuring Lil’ Kim to soundtrack it. Apart from the slightly racist implications of selecting one of her only songs featuring a Black woman to play up working with another female rapper in the present, Aguilera further insulted people’s intelligence by captioning it, “This is for the girls” (a nod to the chorus of “Can’t Hold Us Down”). Like, really, Xtina? Is a commercial about food delivery “for the girls”? Is this the best the feminist movement can do? Level the playing field for women to be as obsessed with “filling their bag” as men? If that’s the case, might as well get back in the kitchen. No need for ordering delivery then.

  • Society Once Asked, “Where’s the beef?” Nicki Minaj Plans to Stew It With Her Own Record Label

Society Once Asked, “Where’s the beef?” Nicki Minaj Plans to Stew It With Her Own Record Label

    [ad_1]

As a woman in the music industry, there’s never been a better time to show the patriarchy how useless it is by starting one’s own label (though let us never forget that Madonna already set that bar a long time ago with Maverick). Ultimate proof that “the suits” have been capitalizing on the myth of their “indispensability” for far too long. Among the ranks of female musicians to have recently started their own label is MARINA, who founded Queenie Records in late 2022. But while MARINA is known for being a more, shall we say, collaborative personality, Nicki Minaj has a reputation for starting beef with just about every interaction (almost Azealia Banks-style)—usually with fellow female rappers. Thus, for her to establish a record label would theoretically mean she’s willing to pack in her combative ways in order to “fully show up” for the musicians she wants to sign. And sure, she claims, “When I get behind an artist, y’all know how I do shit for people that’s not even signed to me. Imagine what I’ma do for the ones that’s signed,” but when anyone rubs her the wrong way, it’s game over.

One of the latest female rappers to do that was Latto (evidently, taking Cardi B’s erstwhile spot for most threatening new addition to the scene). The beef arose when Minaj called out Latto as an example of a new artist who didn’t deserve such reverence compared to her, this being catalyzed by the Recording Academy’s decision to move Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” into consideration for the pop category instead of the rap one while putting together their nomination list (in the end, “Super Freaky Girl” didn’t make the cut at all, while Latto’s “Big Energy” received a nomination in the category of Best Melodic Rap Performance). Minaj’s response to this was, “They stay moving the goalposts when it comes to me. If you can’t tell by now there is a concerted effort to give new artists things they don’t deserve, over artists who have been deserving for many years.”

This echoed Minaj’s contempt for Cardi’s early success as well. However, rather than start a Twitter war as she did with Latto, the beef came directly to Nicki at a New York Fashion Week party in 2018. When Cardi famously got elbowed in the side of the forehead by one of Minaj’s security guards before then throwing her shoe in Minaj’s direction. The feud’s boiling point was spurred by Cardi’s irritation over “lies Nicki was spreading,” in addition to threatening other musicians in the business that she wouldn’t work with them if they chose to work with Cardi. Taking to Instagram Live after the incident, Cardi expressed, “You lie so much you can’t even keep up with yo fuckin’ lies.”

Latto felt similarly when Minaj forced her into the drama over the Grammys by tweeting, “This Karen has probably mentioned my name in over 100 interviews…but today, scratch off decides to be silent; rather than speak up for the black woman she called her biggest inspiration.” The accusation came after Latto texted her privately in support of her statement about the unfairness of the category classification for “Super Freaky Girl,” prompting Latto to remind Nicki when she dragged it out in public, “1st of all I texted u cause I didn’t wanna do the internet sht w sum1 I looked up to. I do agree but the way u going about it seems malicious.” Hence, Latto definitely not looking up to Nicki anymore by the time it was all over, complete with getting #40YearOldBully to trend on Twitter. Latto then shared a recorded phone conversation she had with Nicki (because she knew “who tf I’m dealing with”) that featured Nicki accusing Latto of trying to put herself “above” other female rappers a.k.a. Minaj. All in all, it doesn’t sound as though Minaj would create a very “safe space” to nurture up-and-coming female artists in. Especially with the Lil’ Kim prophecy in mind that went: “She wanted to be the only female out there… she wanted to be out there by herself.”

As the beefs rack up, it appears Minaj might end up being just that in more ways than one. Particularly if she alienates more women trying to or who actually get signed to her label. As Cardi concluded on her 2018 Instagram Live, “You’re out here fucking up your legacy looking like a fucking hater.” And yet, there was a time when creating controversy of this nature was considered “good” for one’s rep. These being in the pre-woke days of pop culture, when everyone could freely admit that they got off on the drama. With the present climate, the urging for women in rap to partake of a more “room for everyone” spirit has been met with continued venom from Miss Chun-Li herself—making it slightly difficult for her to transition into a 2020s climate. But, apropos of “Chun-Li,” it was Minaj herself who insisted, “They need rappers like me/So they can get on their fuckin’ keyboards and make me the bad guy.”

Yet it seems Minaj is only too adept at doing that to herself (all while refusing to admit to the Taylor adage, “It’s me, hi. I’m the problem it’s me”). This is perhaps because Minaj comes from an old school sensibility regarding what rap entails. More than just the music itself, it is (or was) about a lifestyle centered on beefing. As Minaj once phrased it, “Rap is different now. You gotta pretend you like people and stuff. Everybody’s gotta get on the bandwagon. They get on the love bandwagon, and they get on the hate bandwagon.”

To play both sides of old and new school takes on what rap should include outside of the music itself, Nicki is known for firing shots behind the scenes while paying “respect” in public—ergo, Latto taping the aforementioned conversation wherein she called Latto “delusional” for saying other female rappers were flourishing. With that in mind, is there any nascent female rap aspirant that would really dare to fuck with Minaj’s label knowing how petty (no reference to her husband intended) she can be? That might be why Minaj was certain to specify, “Don’t think my label is just rap, or Black, or anything. We got some other genres of music.” For, if not, Minaj is liable to get jealous if another woman on her label actually did succeed a little “too well”—conjuring the image of the lyrical threat, “These birds copy every word, every inch/But gang-gang got the hammer and the wrench.” Minaj has also reiterated her contempt for any woman who tries to compete for her throne on her latest single, “Red Ruby Da Sleeze” (during which she also alludes to the Latto beef, in addition to “potentially” shading Megan Thee Stallion with the line, “I don’t fuck with horses”).

Continuing her beloved tradition of sampling, Minaj used Lumidee’s “Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh)” (itself a sample from Steven “Lenky” Marsden’s Diwali Riddim compilation) on the follow-up single to the Rick James-grafted “Super Freaky Girl.” Minaj, whether aware of it or not, appears to tongue-in-cheekly include Lumidee’s original verses at the end: “If you want me to stay/I’ll never leave/If you want me to stay/Love endlessly.” In other words, she wants everyone else to love her endlessly…not the other way around. Which certainly makes for plenty of beef-stewing on a new label. Or, if nothing else, the building of a new kind of Barbz army.

  • Spotify’s Best New Artist Campaign Shines a Light on the Next Generation of Musicians

Spotify’s Best New Artist Campaign Shines a Light on the Next Generation of Musicians

    [ad_1]

With localized rap scenes exploding in seemingly every city across the country, new rock bands revitalizing old, mythic movements of yore, and democratized technology giving anyone with a computer and a keyboard the ability to make festival-ready pop hits from the comfort of their bedroom, there’s no need to question if there’s any good music out there. Where to find it is the challenge.

That’s where Spotify comes in. Its Best New Artist annual event & campaign has proven time and time again to be a leading tastemaker, shining a light on the nominees who’ve put in hard work and officially hit the first of many career high points. Past honorees include Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, and Lizzo, for example. Because selection to the BNA category is such a prestigious honor, Spotify ends its campaign with an annual event that celebrates the artists, their music, and the incredible year they’ve had. With multiple performances and crowds full of the industry’s biggest and brightest, the event is a key moment in music’s biggest week. Each of this year’s nominees has a unique story and sound that won’t remain hidden for long. Keep reading to see what the next wave of superstars is all about.

    Anitta

    LUFRÉ

“It was a huge honor to represent Brazilian and Latin women everywhere when ‘Envolver’ reached #1 on the Global Spotify chart,” Brazilian superstar Anitta says, “because that had never been accomplished by a solo Latin artist before.” For anyone within earshot of a radio, though, this latest achievement felt more like an inevitability than any great surprise. Since releasing her debut album in 2013, the Brazilian pop star has repeatedly reached new pinnacles of fame, smashing the glass ceiling for what Latin artists can achieve on a global scale. Her latest record, 2022’s Versions of Me, amassed hundreds of millions of streams, while her stunningly choreographed music videos break the internet the second they drop.

    Omar Apollo

    omar apollo

    Gustavo Garcia Villa

Omar Apollo thrives in the liminal space where all sounds, no matter their origin, are free to mingle with each other. Combining old-school funk with new-school pop, traditional Mexican music with contemporary Latin trap, Apollo dissolves boundaries to create something new. “I recorded my first song in the winter in my garage,” the Indiana-born singer has said. “It was negative-degree weather and I had gloves and a winter coat on. I was in the garage because I was too embarrassed to record in my house where my family would hear me.” Now, with the release of his debut studio album, Ivory, in 2022, including hit single “Invincible” (feat. Daniel Caesar), Apollo can rest assured he’s found a mainstream audience eager to explore the unknown alongside him.

    Muni Long

    muni long

    BONNIE NICHOALDS

To call Florida-born songstress Muni Long a new artist would be slightly misleading. “I started singing at the ripe age of 2 years old!” she says. “I’ve always had an ear for music.” A proven superstar on both sides of the industry, the “Hrs & Hrs” singer has a knack for soaring melodies and emotionally astute lyrics. And that made her an in-demand songwriter for the likes of Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Kelly Clarkson for more than a decade before she finally stepped into the spotlight with a string of successful releases in 2022. Now that her own powerful vocals have been unleashed into the world, it’s unlikely Long will find herself behind the scenes again.

    Samara Joy

    samara joy

    MEREDITH TRUAX

Samara Joy’s voice—rich and wise beyond her 23 years—seems to contain the past, present, and future of jazz within it. After winning the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019, Joy found her name being mentioned alongside the likes of Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. Though that sounds like a lot of pressure, you wouldn’t be able to tell by listening to her music. Songs like “Can’t Get Out Of This Mood” seem to float and churn, guided by the Bronx-born singer’s perfect vocal phrasing and delicate bursts of expression. To move a genre so rich with history forward into the new age requires a deft hand (and voice!). Luckily, Joy is up for the challenge.

    Latto

    latto

    JORA FRANTZIS

2022 was a major year for 24-year-old Latto, who became the first female rapper to have a record (“Big Energy”) hit #1 at Pop, Rhythm and Urban radio. Other singles, such as “FTCU” (feat. GloRilla and Gangsta Boo), quickly caught fire, and soon the latest rap superstar to emerge from Atlanta was crowned. An outspoken critic of men in the music industry who wield their power to silence female artists, she creates swaggering flows that announce themselves with authority over bombastic beats. With a keen ability to dominate any song she’s on, Latto’s time is here and now.

    Tobe Nwigwe

Tobe Nwigwe built his musical career from the ground up with no foreknowledge of the industry. Endowed with an acute clarity of purpose, Nwigwe began consistently releasing new music and content every week, building a canon of approximately 324 videos and multiple viral singles—including “I Need You To (Breonna Taylor Tribute)” and “Try Jesus,”— the latter of which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Digital Song Sales chart. With a verbose yet never overwrought rhyming style and an unbeatable team behind him (including his wife, Fat Nwigwe, who’s featured on “Fye Fye,” and with whom Nwigwe originally went viral rapping alongside in online videos), this Houston hero is surely just getting started.

    Molly Tuttle

    SAMANTHA MULJAT

In 2022, Molly Tuttle transcended her upbringing as a lifelong fan of bluegrass music to become perhaps the face of the genre for today’s youth. Raised in the suburbs of San Francisco before studying music at Berklee College of Music, Tuttle finally landed in Nashville, where her proclivity for perceptive storytelling quickly made her a name to watch in the country-music hotbed. The “Dooley’s Farm” (feat. Billy Strings) singer is intent on fostering a welcoming community as she ushers her new supporters into the bluegrass fold: 2022’s Crooked Tree, the album that landed her on the Spotify BNA playlist, “is about loving what makes us all unique,” she proclaims.

    Wet Leg

    Alice Backham

Remarkably adroit at delivering satirical skewerings of the in-crowd, Wet Leg is a band for everyone—as long as you aren’t too cool to have fun. Born on the Isle of Wight in England, the duo had their first show at the Rose Pub in Ventnor. “It’s shut down now, but it was famous for its watered-down spirits. According to our drummer, Henry, it always smelt like cabbage, which was odd, he thought, because they didn’t actually serve any food there.” While their irreverent brand of indie rock made them a natural fit for these smaller clubs, debut single “Chaise Longue” quickly elevated the band into the next level of fame with multiple national TV appearances and a worldwide tour.

    Måneskin

    Måneskin

Italy’s Måneskin might be the new ambassadors of rock ’n’ roll for Gen Z —but don’t tell them that. “A great achievement for us is to keep making music without any kind of scheme or need to conform—and to always remember to feel free from conventions in the creative process.” After winning Eurovision in 2021 and releasing hit tracks like “Supermodel” and “The Loneliest” in 2022, the band’s stadium-ready mixture of pulsating drum beats, 1970s guitar grooves, and pop melodies firmly catapulted this four-piece into the mainstream. Based on their gender-bending live shows that contain more energy in one evening than most acts muster in an entire career, one thing’s for certain: As this band continues their rise from former street buskers to modern rock stars, they’ll do it their way.

    DOMi & JD BECK

    DOMi & JD Beck

If DOMi and JD BECK’s habit of using memes, all-caps song titles, and social media soundbites to playfully introduce their music gives them an admirably lighthearted bent, don’t let it distract from the fact that these two savants are making some of the most forward-thinking jazz in recent years. “TAKE A CHANCE,” off their 2022 album NOT TiGHT, illustrates exactly what’s so special about the duo, as veteran musical heavyweight Anderson .Paak delivers smooth verses over a grooving, virtuosic soundscape that DOMi and BECK calibrate perfectly to their guest’s strengths. Untethered to any prescriptive genre mandates, this duo is updating jazz for the Zoomer age.
