  • Temple to Celebrate Latin Heritage at Cultural Activities Center

TEMPLE, Texas (FOX 44) – The Cultural Activities Center in Temple is holding a Latin heritage celebration this Saturday.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will transform the Cultural Activities Center into a space for Latin people to connect with their heritage, and for non-Latin people to learn and join in on the fun.

Kandice Harris, the Director of Visual Arts at the Cultural Activities Center, says that the celebration will be packed full of Latin activities.

“It’s just a day to celebrate the Latin roots in our community,” said Kandice. “We will have dance performances. We will have a music performance.”

One of the performers on Saturday will be the Tierra Mestiza Ballet Folklorico group. Anna Pineda is the director of this group, who spoke about the importance of dance in Latin culture.

“Dance is kind of inherent since childhood,” said Pineda. “Kids as young as, like, pre-K and kindergarten as part of, like, end of the semester, end of the year, they learn traditional dance from their teacher and perform for their family.”

Pineda also spoke about how the traditional dresses they wear are tied to the dance and have meaningful cultural significance.

“Mexico has 32 states, and often each state has its own representative dress,” said Pineda. “Also, within each state, you’ll have subsections, or towns even, that have their own attire.”

Another event that will happen at the celebration is a scholarship handout from the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC. Judy Morales is the President of LULAC Council 4971, and says that handing out these scholarships is an amazing feeling.

“It’s such an investment, and so, we really feel excited about being able to be part of their lives,” said Morales. “They come back, they’re nurses, they’re bankers, they’re scientists. One of them already has a Ph.D.”

The event is free to attend, and the Cultural Activities Center hopes to make the celebration a yearly staple during Latin Heritage Month.

  • Denver’s renovated Federal Theatre announces opening show and releases schedule

The Federal Theatre, on Federal Boulevard at 38th Avenue. June 20, 2025.

    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

The Federal Theatre will celebrate its grand reopening with a free show on Friday, Sept. 19. The show will feature two bands from northwest Denver: iZCALLi, a Latin rock band and Los Mocochetes, a Chicano funk band.

The show is free and for all ages at 3850 Federal Blvd. Space is limited, so the organizers are encouraging people to reserve their tickets at thefederaltheatre.com

The 102-year-old theater is being brought back to life by Scott Happel, Andy Bercaw and Peter Ore. They’re the people responsible for bringing back the Oriental Theater in 2012, and they expect to bring the same independent spirit to the Federal.

Happel told Denverite in June that independent music venues are important for the local music scene, and its schedule is already filling up with local bands. For example, Mile High Ska will play on Sept. 25.

The current schedule spans from September through December and can be found on the theater’s website as well.

The theater has more than just concerts scheduled. On Oct.4, HUMP, which has been described as “the world’s best indie erotic film fest,” is coming to the theater.

“We don’t have the same sort of corporate overlords telling us, ‘You can’t do this kind of show anymore. It doesn’t make enough money,’ or whatever,” Happel told Denverite previously. We’re trying to do as wide a variety of stuff as possible.”

Westwood’s signature fusion event is back.

The Saigon Azteca Night Market brings Denver’s Latino and Asian communities together for a night of cultural celebration on Saturday from 2-10 p.m.

Organizers say the event, returning for its second year, is a big block party designed to celebrate traditions and foster unity.

Saigon Azteca will take over Morrison Road, from S. Patton Court to S. Quitman Street. Event highlights include cultural dances, DJ battles, local artists and vendors, a car show and cuisine aplenty.

Damaris Ronkanen of Hecho en Westwood and Mimi Luong of the Far East Center host the free, family- and pet-friendly event.

These community leaders and friends are holding the line against gentrification in Westwood — and have a good time, too.

“I don’t know about you, but I think Asians and Latinos know how to party,” Truong said.

Here’s what’s in store at the second-annual Saigon Azteca Night Market.

    • Lion and dragon dancers will intertwine with Danza Mexica Aztec dancers
    • Traditional folklorico and fan dancers will perform together
    • Low riders will have a showdown with JDM sports cars
    • K-pop performers will go head-to-head with Mexican hip-hop artists
    • DJs will spin hits from around the world
    • Guests can participate in Pho-zole and Birria ramen eating contests
    • Kids and families can enjoy a craft station
    • Local artists and vendors will sell their wares
