Las Vegas police announced that Officer Skeeter Black and his family adopted the 2‑year‑old pup, renamed JetBlue after the airline where he was left tied to a ticket counter baggage sizer.

The dog was abandoned after his previous owner, Germiran Bryson, was told she couldn’t board her flight without proper service‑dog documentation. Instead of leaving the airport with the dog or arranging care, she walked away.

“What began as a heartbreaking act of abandonment has turned into a powerful example of compassion, teamwork, and community partnership,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department wrote in an Instagram post.

    The Leash of Destiny

Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas, which cared for JetBlue since he was taken into custody on Feb. 2, said it was inundated with hundreds of applications to adopt the pooch after police broke the sad news of his abandonment on Feb. 18. However, there was never really a doubt where he was headed.

According to police, the very same rescue had approved the Black family to adopt a goldendoodle months earlier, long before JetBlue appeared at the airport.

Photos and video released by the department show the moment Officer Black and his family arrived at the rescue facility to finalize the adoption. JetBlue, tail wagging, greeted them as if he already knew where he belonged.

After Bryson left Germiran at the ticket counter, investigators said, she made her way to her flight’s departure gate. When police confronted her, she explained that the dog had a tracking chip implanted and therefore would find his way back to her.

At first, police offered to walk Bryson back to the dog and issue her a citation. However, they reported, she became “hostile” when they attempted to detain her, resisting as she was escorted through a security checkpoint.

She was arrested and booked on three misdemeanor charges, including animal abandonment and resisting a public officer.

Las Vegas police celebrated JetBlue’s relocation to a home where he’s more wanted.

“Today, JetBlue’s next journey begins this time, surrounded by the people who stepped in when he needed it the most,” their statement read. “Bon voyage, JetBlue and welcome to a new life where you’ll be loved beyond words by Officer Black and his family.”

  • Law roundup: All bets are off after costly cat giveaway

    [ad_1]

Sep. 1—A man called the Kalispell Police Department, alleging that his partner in Las Vegas had given away his cats, one of which was purportedly worth $5,000. He said Las Vegas police instructed him to go to the local police department to make a “courtesy report” to send to them. He told an officer he would report it in Las Vegas when he returned home.

Men with menacing stares sitting in a brown truck with no license plates and guys on bicycles were reportedly exchanging what someone thought was drugs. The caller also noticed a red vehicle on the scene.

A DoorDash driver reportedly delivered violence when someone called the Kalispell Police Department alleging the driver assaulted an employee and wanted to press charges.

A welfare check was requested by an employee concerned about the well-being of a woman dressed in black who was allegedly dragging a big box around a parking lot and looking under cars while screaming for her rabbit. There was indeed a rabbit, which was eventually caught. Officers advised the woman of her warrant before she moved along.

Officers responded to a later call with another request to check on the woman’s welfare, who by this time was reportedly lying in the grass next to the box, which the rabbit was hopping in and out of. She and the rabbit were fine.

An employee wanted to file a complaint when someone came into the kitchen and flashed the cooks. The jail was notified about the indecent exposure incident.

A property owner called the police to report a vehicle they did not recognize, which had out-of-state license plates and didn’t belong to a tenant. The manager was reportedly concerned the suspicious vehicle could be associated with a malfunctioning security camera and stolen light bulbs.

A man reportedly fell while trying to protect his bleeding dog from a rottweiler’s attack. The owner of the rotweiler was ticketed for having a dog at large. The other dog owner took his dog to the vet and, at the time, was unsure if he would seek restitution.

A man brought his three dogs, which included an allegedly aggressive German shepherd, to Begg Park, letting them into a fenced area reserved for dogs under 30 pounds and someone called the police after reportedly hearing a dog yelp, saying they were unsure if one of his dogs “got a small dog,” claiming it had previously attacked a small dog.

The man told officers his dogs had “so much energy” he liked to let them run around with no other dogs first, before letting them loose into the rest of the park. He said the accusations were false, complaining that it was “unfair” that the caller didn’t speak to him directly and left.

A vehicle reportedly ran over a sprinkler.

Someone calling from Parkline Trail allegedly heard an individual screaming profanities.

Las Vegas police on Wednesday said there appear to be multiple victims in a shooting on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. Police said the suspect was dead.

“The suspect has been located and is deceased,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department wrote on social media, after earlier saying, “The suspect is contained. This is an active investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and watch for responding emergency units.”

The university asked people to continue to shelter in place as police evacuated buildings one at a time.

A federal law enforcement official told CBS News the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were responding and offering assistance with the investigation to the metropolitan police.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, police tweeted that they were “responding to preliminary reports of an #ActiveShooter on the campus of UNLV near BEAM Hall. There appears to be multiple victims at this time. Please avoid the area and we will have more information soon.”

The university’s media relations department confirmed the active shooter situation, saying that alerts have gone out to the campus.

The university also wrote on social media that police were responding to additional reports of shots fired in the Student Union.

University police were responding to the situation as well.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called the news “tragic and heartbreaking.”

“Praying for everyone on campus as law enforcement responds to the situation,” she wrote.

  • Suspect Called Tupac Shakur Killing ‘Biggest Case In Las Vegas History’ During Arrest

Suspect Called Tupac Shakur Killing ‘Biggest Case In Las Vegas History’ During Arrest

    [ad_1]

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The man charged with murder in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur knew the gravity of his arrest last week near his home on the outskirts of Las Vegas, according to police body camera footage released Friday.

“So what they got you for, man?” an officer asks Duane “Keffe D” Davis.

“Biggest case in Las Vegas history,” Davis says, recounting the date that Shakur was gunned down — “September 7th, 1996.”

Police and prosecutors allege Davis was the mastermind behind the drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip that killed Shakur at the age of 25.

Now, more than 27 years later, Davis was handcuffed around the wrists and in ankle shackles in the backseat of Las Vegas police car headed toward a county jail, where he remains held without bond.

“I ain’t worried,” Davis told the officer. “I ain’t did (expletive).”

The police videos, totaling more than an hour of footage, show Davis arrested around sunrise on Sept. 29 while walking in his otherwise quiet neighborhood.

“Hey, Keffe. Metro Police,” an officer said. “Come over here.”

Davis, holding a water bottle, cooperated as he was patted down and handcuffed next to an unmarked police vehicle.

The 60-year-old had been a long-known suspect in the case. He publicly admitted his role in the killing in interviews ahead of his 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend.” His arrest came two months after police raided his home, renewing interest in one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries.

In the videos, Davis recalled the July 17 raid and peeking over a gate at the same time as a SWAT officer. He said his arrest that morning was much more low-key.

As they drove on the freeway en route to police headquarters to interview Davis, he asks if he was followed the previous night. The officer says no.

“So why you all didn’t bring the media?” Davis said.

The officer asked why police would bring the media.

“That’s what you all do,” Davis said.

The self-described gangster from Compton, California, hasn’t yet entered a plea in the case, and he denied a request from The Associated Press for an interview at the jail. His longtime lawyer in Los Angeles, Edi Faal, told AP he has no comment on Davis’ behalf.

Davis told police that he had moved to the Las Vegas area in January because of his wife’s job. But the audio is redacted when police later ask him what he has been doing since the move.

In an indictment unsealed last Friday in Clark County District Court, Davis is accused of orchestrating the killing of Shakur and providing his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, with the gun to do it. Anderson, who denied involvement in Shakur’s killing, died in 1998.

Grand jurors also voted to add sentencing enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon and alleged gang activity. If Davis is convicted, that could add decades to his sentence.

In Nevada, a person can be convicted of murder for helping another person commit the crime.

Davis’ first court appearance this week was cut short when he asked the judge for a postponement while he retains counsel in Las Vegas. He’s due in court again Oct. 19.

Authorities say Shakur’s killing stemmed from a rivalry and competition for dominance in a musical genre that, at the time, was dubbed “gangsta rap.” It pitted West Coast members of a Crips sect that Davis has said he led in Compton against East Coast members of a Bloods gang sect associated with rap music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, founder of Death Row Records, the music label representing Shakur at the time of his death.

Antczak reported from Los Angeles. Associated Press writer Felicia Fonseca in Flagstaff, Arizona, contributed.

  • Las Vegas police search home in connection to Tupac Shakur murder

Las Vegas police search home in connection to Tupac Shakur murder

    [ad_1]

Las Vegas police on Monday searched a home in connection with the investigation into the murder of superstar rapper Tupac Shakur.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on Monday searched a home in Henderson, less than 20 miles from the Las Vegas Strip where Shakur, 25, was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996.

“LVMPD can confirm a search warrant was served in Henderson, Nevada on July 17, 2023, as part of the ongoing Tupac Shakur homicide investigation,” Las Vegas police said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

The investigation into Shakur’s murder has been going on for nearly three decades.

In 2019, Greg Kading, a retired Los Angeles police detective, alleged to CBS News Los Angeles that Shakur’s murder had already been solved after Duane Davis — also known as Keffe D — confessed to his involvement in the murder of Shakur while being questioned in connection with the murder of Biggie Smalls.

But at the time, Las Vegas police only said that the case was still an open investigation.

Last month, Shakur posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in honor of his contributions to the arts, as well as his activism for racial equality.

The rapper influenced the hip-hop genre and amassed a global fan base, selling over 75 million records worldwide and winning six Grammy Award nominations during his short five-year recording career.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

  • Britney Spears responds to alleged assault by Victor Wembanyama’s security guard

Britney Spears responds to alleged assault by Victor Wembanyama’s security guard

    [ad_1]

Britney Spears is speaking out after she was allegedly assaulted by a security guard for Victor Wembanyama — this year’s number one NBA draft pick.

In a statement posted to Twitter on Thursday, the pop star said she first spotted Wembanyama in her Las Vegas hotel lobby as she was headed to dinner. Later that night, she said she saw him at a restaurant in a different hotel.

Spears said she recognized Wembanyama and wanted to congratulate him on his accomplishments.

“It was really loud, so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention,” the singer wrote. “His security then back handed me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd.”

She said the blow almost knocked her over and knocked her glasses off.

Wembanyama, who was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs last month, told reporters Thursday that as he was walking down a hallway, someone who had been trying to get his attention “grabbed me from behind.” He said security then “pushed her away,” though he noted he didn’t see what happened because he had been told not to stop so that a crowd couldn’t form around him.

The 19-year-old said he didn’t know “how much force” was used and that he only found out the person was Spears hours later.

Spears addressed Wembanyama’s comments in her response, denying that she “grabbed him from behind.”

“I simply tapped him on the shoulder,” she wrote.

Spears criticized the security guards’ behavior, pointing out that she is often swarmed by fans, including that same night.

“I was swarmed by a group of at least 20 fans,” she said. “My security team didn’t hit any of them.”

In a statement to CBS News, the Las Vegas Police Department said it responded to a battery incident in the area around 11 p.m. Wednesday night, but could not provide more information. The department said no arrests were made and no citations were issued.

Spears said the story was “super embarrassing,” but that she shared it to “urge people in the public eye to set and example and treat all people with respect.”

“Physical violence is happening too much in this world. Often behind closed doors,” she wrote. “I stand with all the victims and my heart goes out to all of you!!!”

The “Circus” singer said she has not received a public apology from Wembanyama, the security guard or the Spurs.
