  • A Week 18 With No Stakes – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    Scheduling 16 Division matchups for the final week of the regular season continues to fight the league. With only TWO of the fourteen playoff positions up for grabs which will be decided between the Ravens/Steelers Sunday night game as well as Panthers/Buccaneers (with some help from Atlanta) Sunday afternoon.

    The Eagles will come into Sunday almost locked into the 3 Seed, but with a little bit of scoreboard help happening at the same time they play Washington could see them leap into the 2 Seed. A Lions win over the Bears would give the Eagles a need to compete against the Commanders, a team out for revenge from just two weeks ago.

    A Vengeful Rematch 

    The decision to go for 2 points, putting the Eagles up 19 points late into the 4th quarter was the right decision. The Eagles had already missed two field goals, taking 6 points off the board of what ended as a 29-18 game. 

    The ever so clueless Dan Quinn, who hasn’t learned from his time in Atlanta. Part of the comical 28-3 Falcons Super Bowl loss. Or multiple years as the Cowboys defensive coordinator, giving up 48 points to a 7th seed Packers team in his last game on the sideline for “Americas team.” 

    Upset over the Eagles decision to go for 2, Quinn stated “If that’s how they want to get down, we’ll see them again in two weeks.” Feels very threatening for a Week 18 division opponent matchup. Which leads to the question.

    Did Dan Quinn forget that the Eagles clinched the NFC East title with their Week 16 victory at Northwest Stadium?

    The Commanders season was realistically over by their Bye Week(if not earlier) Sitting at 3-8, losing their franchise QB for weeks at a time, rushing him back from numerous injuries just to be sidelined again feels like something a desperate team would do. 

    Add in injuries to Tyler Biadasz, Marcus Mariota, Laremy Tunsil, Sam Cosmi, Trey Amos, amongst plenty of players like Zach Ertz, Marshon Lattimore and Austin Ekeler. The #1 thing the Commanders should be playing for on Sunday is draft position. 

    7th overall is a great place to be for a team that was only 22 points from punching their ticket to a Super Bowl less than 12 months ago. 

    If 17th year Josh Johnson is able to lead the Commanders to a nothingburger victory against Tanner McKee and what we should expect to be most of the Eagles backup & reserve players. Then I guess we can give Dan Quinn & Co. Their flowers of “only beating an Eagles backup QB” 2 years running.

  • Clinchmas Is On The Horizon  – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    With 3 weeks to go in the regular season, playoff spots are starting to be snatched up. With the Broncos, Seahawks and Rams being the first teams to clinch a playoff spot, many more will soon follow. 

    Including the Eagles, whose magic number jumped from 3 all the way to 1 on Sunday following a Raiders blowout and a Cowboys season that’s nearly over, courtesy of “Nine” and the Minnesota Vikings. 

    And the Eagles first opportunity to punch their ticket into the postseason comes a day earlier this week. With a Saturday night game against the Washington Commanders

    The Last Match

    January 26th 2025 was the last time these teams saw each other. In an NFC Championship Game division matchup. To end a conversation:

    What would happen if Jalen Hurts played all 4 quarters of the Week 16 loss?

    A game that saw the Eagles take a quick 14-0 lead that saw Hurts exit due to a concussion just 5 minutes into the game. The final score ended 36-33 after the Eagles defense couldn’t get a stop, and the offense led by Kenny Pickett could barely pick up a first down. 

    To open the NFC championship game, the Commanders led an 18 play, 54 yard drive that included two 4th down conversions and finished with 3 points. The Eagles answer to that drive? This Saquon Barkley60 yard TD on the Eagles opening play of the game. 

    What followed was an absolute rout. The Eagles saw a 12 point lead at halftime, before they took things personally and finished the game with a 21 point 4th quarter after forcing two turnovers by the Commanders. 

    Now, things will look a little different. 

    Saturday Night

    Jayden Daniels has since been shut down for the season. With multiple injuries sidelining him for weeks at a time. Instead, the Eagles will play against their former backup QB Marcus Mariota who has lead his current team to a 1-3 record. 

    Having been eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago, the Commanders will have nothing to play for but draft position, and attempting to foil the Eagles playoff/seeding hopes. 

    However with a laundry list of injuries ranging from Laremy Tunsil, and Colson Yankoff listed Out for this week. With names like Trey Amos, Luke McCaffrey, Zach Ertz, Marshon Lattimore and Dorance Armstrong already on injured reserve, the Commanders will be thin at numerous positions. Hoping the Eagles can take advantage of a depleted team that thought they could repeat a 12-5 Cinderella run from only a year ago.

    The Difficulty in Making Changes on the Texans’ Beleaguered Offensive Line

    Seven games in, the Houston Texans sit at 5-2, which is a really good place to be, considering it’s their best record to start a season since 2012. Despite the solid overall record, there are still areas for Texans fans to worry about, if indeed this team aspires to compete for a Super Bowl. The offensive line is one of those areas.

    Hell, most Texan fans are just hoping the offensive line won’t get C.J. Stroud killed, let alone prevent a Super Bowl appearance. Sunday’s loss to Green Bay, which saw the offensive line allow relentless pressure from the Packers defense on Stroud, along with a near record setting ELEVEN tackles for loss in the run game, was the last straw for many fans.

    I host the team’s postgame radio show, as well as my own four hour weekday show on SportsRadio 610, and the question we get asked most often is “Can we please just trade [FILL IN NAME OF OFFENSIVE LINEMAN HERE] and move on?” Most often, it’s Laremy Tunsil that fans want to see shipped out, but others are catching heat, too.

    In the NFL, it’s not as simple as just trading a guy for the sake of trading him. The salary cap has real ramifications in these situations, especially with guys like Tunsil, Tytus Howard and Shaq Mason, who’ve all signed big extensions within the last year or so.

    So let’s try to get those of you who have that itchy trigger finger on the “trade this guy” gun a bit more informed. Here is how attached the Texans are contractually and emotionally to each of their five starting offensive linemen. I’ll preface this by saying that none of them are getting traded or cut in 2024, so even addressing that possibility is a waste of space.

    LT: LAREMY TUNSIL (CONTRACT)
    2025: $28.9M cap hit, $25M dead money
    Tunsil is public enemy number one on the offensive line for fans, even as he has done a nice job of cleaning up the barrage of penalties he was committing earlier this season. If the Texans were to move on from Tunsil in a trade next offseason — they would never cut him, he has too much value — they would save around $4 million against the cap in 2025. I think it’s more likely that Tunsil plays out this deal, and the Texans move on after 2026.

    LG: KENYON GREEN (CONTRACT)
    2025: $5.1M cap hit, $5.1M dead money
    Next year would be the fourth year of Green’s rookie contract, so the big question surrounding Green this coming offseason is whether the Texans opt into Green’s fifth year option in 2026. I would guess right now there is no way they will commit to another year of Green after 2025 right now. Imminently, Green is the one guy on this line who could be replaced as soon as next week, if the coaches choose.

    C: JUICE SCRUGGS (CONTRACT)
    2025: $1.7M cap hit, $0.7M dead money
    Scruggs in the second year of his rookie deal, his first year as a full time center, and he is going nowhere. The Texans moving on from Scruggs is not even worth speculating about.

    RG: SHAQ MASON (CONTRACT)
    2025: $14.7M cap hit, $12.5 dead money
    Mason has been the one player out of this group the team can count on to be available. Now, if he could just play better, that would be sweet! Like Tunsil, the team would experience a cap savings of a couple million bucks if they move on from him, in trade or a release, after the season.

    RT: TYTUS HOWARD (CONTRACT)
    2025: $23.1 M cap hit, $21.1M dead money
    Howard is the one guy here who I think could be gone after this season. The Texans drafted right tackle Blake Fisher out of Notre Dame for a reason. I never understood the extension the Texans gave Howard, and he most certainly does not play like a highly paid tackle. I could see the team taking the $2 million cap savings, plugging in Fisher, and moving on in 2025.

    Setting The WR Market, Eagles Extend DeVonta Smith – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    The Eagles front office has done it again.

    After speculation that the Eagles would be paying their WR2 next after agreeing to a 3-year $66M extension with Jordan Mailata just two weeks ago. News finally broke on Monday that not only would DeVonta Smith’s 5th year be picked up, but it also came with a nifty 3-year extension.

    The Eagles will now have the following players on the offense under contract through 2026:

    • QB Jalen Hurts
    • QB Kenny Pickett
    • WR A.J. Brown
    • WR DeVonta Smith
    • RB Saquon Barkley
    • LT Jordan Mailata
    • LG Landon Dickerson
    • OL Tyler Steen
    • RT Lane Johnson

    Not a bad thing to have 8 offensive starters under contract for the next 3 seasons!

    But how did the Eagles get all these top tier players under contract without being well over the cap? (like the Saints have been for years)

     

    Ahead Of The League

    This is now back to back off-seasons where Howie Roseman and co. have been able to extend franchise cornerstone players before the other 31 teams in the league came to terms with their counterparts.

    QB Frenzy

    Starting with Jalen Hurts on April 17th 2023. A 5 year, $255M contract was signed ahead of the following quarterbacks

    • Joe Burrow – 5 years, $275M signed on September 7th 2023
    • Justin Herbert – 5 years, $262.5M signed on July 25th 2023
    • Lamar Jackson – 5 years, $260M signed on April 27th 2023

     

    Offensive Line Mania

    Not only did the Eagles get away with drafting Jordan Mailata in the 7th round of the 2018 draft. They’ve now extended him. Twice! While doing so, the Eagles have gotten ahead by signing Mailata to a 3 year, $66M deal. Now under contract until 2029.

    There weren’t many Offensive Tackles looking to be signed this off-season, but getting an extra 3 years from Mailata at $22M was perfect value giving some previously signed OT’s including:

    • Laremy Tunsil – 3 year, $75M signed on March 19th 2023
    • Andrew Thomas – 5 year, $117.5M signed on July 26th 2023

    However, this was the perfect market to get the Left Tackle signed for those extra years. Because the following will be due for a 5th year option and probable extensions in the next year.

    • Penei Sewell – drafted 7th overall 2021
    • Rashawn Slater – drafted 11th overall 2021
    • Ronnie Stanley – 5 year, $98.75M signed in 2020

     

    Setting The WR Market

    And that’s exactly how the Eagles have set the WR market with DeVonta Smith’s new deal.

    Had the Eagles not worked as quickly as possible on this deal. They would’ve been at risk of the following Receivers potentially getting record breaking deals done first.

    Since we don’t have contract money for these other receivers, let’s keep it simple and compare Yards/TDs.

    • DeVonta Smith – 50GP, 3,178 Rec Yards, 19 TD. signed a 3 year, $75M deal.
    • Justin Jefferson – 60GP, 5,899 Rec Yards, 30 TD. On a 5th year option for $19.74M
    • Ja’Marr Chase – 45GP, 3,717 Rec Yards, 29 TD. 
    • Tee Higgins – 53GP, 3,684 Rec Yards, 24TD. On a $21.8M Franchise Tag
    • CeeDee Lamb – 61GP, 5,145 Rec Yards, 32TD. On a 5th year option for $17.99M

     

    With DeVonta Smith’s extension checked off the offseason to-do list. The next big milestone will be the draft. Just one week away.
