  • Aggravated battery trial begins for former Waukegan police officer also charged in deadly shooting

    WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WLS) — Dante Salinas was fired from the Waukegan Police Department in 2020, shortly after being involved in a police shooting.

    But about a year earlier, in 2019, he was accused of an aggravated assault during a confrontation with a suspect outside of baptism party in Waukegan.

    Nearly six years ago, Salinas stopped at a Waukegan home, where a couple dozen family members and friends were celebrating, after reportedly hearing loud noise coming from the yard.

    That led to a confrontation with Angel Salgado, a man at the party. Prosecutors say the confrontation escalated with Salinas pulling out his gun before switching to his Taser.

    Salinas’ bodycam shows him firing the Taser at Salgado several times. Prosecutors say the officer also punched Salgado in the face, breaking his eye socket.

    Salgado’s wife, Talia, testified in court, saying, “I fear for his life. The officer was going to shoot him.”

    Salinas is charged with aggravated battery in connection with that incident.

    The family of a man who Salinas is charged with killing in an October 2020 police shooting was in court on Monday, watching the proceedings in the separate aggravated battery case.

    Investigators say Salinas shot and killed 19-year old Marcellis Stinnette and injured his girlfriend, Tafarra Williams, after trying to stop the couple’s car.

    Waukegan police said the incident started as a traffic stop, with Salinas investigating a suspicious vehicle. But the situation quickly escalated to a police chase-turned-shooting heard on police dashcam video.

    Prosecutors say Salinas fired seven shots but did not have his body camera recording until after the shooting.

    Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart says Stinnette was a passenger in Williams’ car and did not commit any crime.

    Neither Stinnette nor Williams had any weapons on them, Rinehart says.

    A trial date has not yet been set in the second-degree murder case. The victim’s family filed a civil lawsuit, which has been settled outside of court.

    In the battery case, the alleged victim told the court he did nothing wrong. He said he broke no laws and he had no idea why the officer attacked him. The bench trial is expected to last at least another day.

    PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) — Starting later this summer, you don’t have to drive through downtown Cleveland traffic to see the Browns play.

    Laketran STS buses will soon be offering $25 round-trip tickets from Lake County to downtown Cleveland for all the regular season and preseason home games this year, according to a news release from the public transit operator.

    The Sports Express bus service starts on Saturday, Aug. 10, when the Browns are set to face the Green Bay Packers. It’s a revival of a similar service that ran from 1985 to 2006, busing fans to Browns and Indians games.

    “We’re very excited to bring back Sports Express service to our residents,” Laketran board President Brian Falkowski is quoted in the release. “Laketran ran a similar service 20 years ago, and we still get calls each year about it. We hope that both longtime fans and new riders will join us onboard to get to the game.”

    Riders can catch the Sports Express from the Mentor Park-n-Ride, 8650 Market Street, Mentor.

    Riders will be dropped off in downtown Cleveland at the northeast corner of St. Clair Street and East 9th Street, near the Galleria. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk to Cleveland Browns Stadium.

    The buses will return to Mentor 45 minutes after the final whistle, according to the release.

    Tickets are available on the Laketran STS website. There are only 134 tickets available for each of the 10 home games, so fans are encouraged to buy them early — they’re expected to move fast.

    “If the ticket sales go well, we may look into starting service to the Guardians in the spring,” Laketran CEO Ben Capelle is quoted in the release.

    CLEVELAND, Ohio (WJW) – An intense lake effect snow band caused a slick morning commute in portions of Northeast Ohio.

    Shortly after 9 a.m. on Thursday, Meteorologist Scott Sabol reported the line of snow was weakening as it moved off the lake but, the quick burst of snow made a big impact over several hours as it pushed through the area.

    Shortly after 8 a.m., FOX 8’s Patty Harken reported a crash involving a car and school bus at the I-77 Northbound and I-490 merger. She said no injuries were reported on the bus.

    Earlier, before 7 a.m., several accidents were reported on the Innerbelt Bridge. At one point, traffic in both directions on the Innerbelt Bridge was at a standstill. The portion of the highway has since reopened.

    Here is a look at conditions in downtown Cleveland shortly before 6 a.m.

    The Ohio Department of Transportation has lifted an earlier speed reduction on I-90 in Lake County. Early Thursday morning, at about 5 a.m., ODOT reported they had 160 crews out combating snow and ice.

    FOX 8’s Patty Harken reminds motorists to take it slow on ramps, bridges, and overpasses when conditions may be slick.
