  • Two Delta planes collide on taxiway of New York’s LaGuardia Airport

    [ad_1]

New York — A collision occurred Wednesday night between two Delta Air Lines planes on a taxiway at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

In a statement, Delta Air Lines said that a “low-speed collision” occurred between Endeavor Air Flight 5047, arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina, and Endeavor Flight 5155, which was scheduled to depart for Roanoke, Virginia.

Endeavor is a Delta subsidiary. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in its own statement that the crash occurred just before 10 p.m. Eastern Time.

There was an apparent collision between two planes on a taxiway at LaGuardia Airport on Oct. 1, 2025.

According to the airline, preliminary information indicates that the wing of Flight 5155 made contact with the fuselage of Flight 5047.

The airline said that a flight attendant sustained a minor injury and was treated by EMTs at the scene. The injured person was taken to a hospital, the Port Authority said.

Endeavor Flight 5155 was carrying 32 people, 28 passengers and four crewmembers, Delta said. Endeavor Flight 5047 was carrying 61 people, 57 passengers and 4 crewmembers.

A CBS News producer who was aboard Flight 5047 captured cell phone video of the damage to the wing of the other plane.

In the video, a pilot aboard Flight 5047 can be heard over the intercom telling passengers that “it seems as though there’s an aircraft that collided with us.”

The cause of the collision is unknown at this time.

“There was no impact to airport operations,” the Port Authority said of the incident.

Passengers were escorted off the planes and onto waiting shuttle buses. The airline said that passengers who needed them would be provided hotel rooms and booked onto new flights Thursday.

“Delta teams at our New York-LaGuardia hub are working to ensure our customers are taken care of after two Delta Connection aircraft operated by Endeavor Air were involved in a low-speed collision during taxi,” Delta said in a statement. “Delta will work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience.”

CBS News New York has also reached out the Federal Aviation Administration for comment, but has not yet heard back.

New York City TSA agents found 17 bullets “artfully concealed” in a clean, disposable diaper that a man was trying to bring on a plane at LaGuardia Airport, the agency announced Wednesday.

The officers found the surprising cargo on Wednesday morning, according to a TSA news release. The man’s bag triggered an alarm in an X-ray unit at a security checkpoint. When officers searched the man’s bag, they found the diaper, which had 17 9-millimeter bullets wrapped inside.

The man, a resident of Arkansas who has not been identified, first told TSA officials that he didn’t know how the diaper ended up in his bag. Later, he said his girlfriend must have placed it in the bag.

The TSA did not state if the man had a weapon or if he was traveling with any other people.

The Port Authority Police cited the man with unlawful posession of the ammunition.

“Apparently this guy needs a bullet-proof plan for packing his carry-on bag before heading to the airport for his next flight,” the TSA said.

TSA agents routinely find unsual items at airport security checkpoints across the country. Earlier this year, a plastic skull being brought to a trade show halted operations at Salt Lake City International Airport. The item resembled an improvised explosive device, and it took two hours to confirm that there was no threat.

In January, the agency released a list of the strangest things they had confiscated from passengers in 2022. That included an inert grenade found at Milwaukee’s Mitchell International airport, cattle prods tucked inside a guitar case that was being carried on at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, and a hair scrunchie filled with drugs that a passenger tried to bring aboard a plane at Idaho’s Boise Airport.

Poor air quality impacts millions for second day

Hazardous air conditions from wildfire smoke impacts millions of Americans for second day

Travelers flying in or out of the Northeast may want to check on the status of their airport on Thursday, with wildfire smoke from Canada causing more flight disruptions for a second day.

On Thursday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration put a ground stop on departures from Philadelphia International Airport, citing low visibility, while departures from LaGuardia airport in New York City had an average ground delay of almost an hour, according to agency data.

The FAA tweeted Wednesday morning that it would “likely need to take steps to manage the flow of traffic safely into New York City, DC, Philadelphia and Charlotte.”

In addition to the ground stop on departing flights from Philadelphia, the agency added that it had paused in-bound flights on Wednesday morning to Philadelphia, as well as for New York City’s LaGuardia, coming from the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio due to low visibility.

The agency also issued a ground delay for Newark airport on Thursday morning.

The delays and ground stops come after all flights to LaGuardia were paused on Wednesday, while New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport experienced arrival and departure delays. Images from New York City on Wednesday showed an apocalyptic-looking scene, with its skyline dimmed by smoke and the air a burnt-orange color.

The Northeast has been blanketed by smoke from the Canadian wildfires, prompting warnings about air quality across the region and prompting schools to cancel after-school events and employers to tell workers to stay home.

Passengers can check real-time flight information at the FAA’s website, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg tweeted on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, some airlines urged travelers to check their apps and websites to monitor for delays or other problems.

  • When it comes to the world’s best airports, the U.S. is flyover country

When it comes to the world’s best airports, the U.S. is flyover country

    [ad_1]

Travelers looking to fly out of a modern, attractive airport with efficient security, tasteful restaurants and top-notch shopping should bypass the U.S.

According to aviation ranking website Skytrax, only one U.S. airport ranks among the top 20 in the world — Seattle-Tacoma Airport in Washington state, at No. 18. The rest of the continent isn’t so hot, either. Only one other fight hub in North America makes the grade, Canada’s Vancouver International Airport, at No. 20.

To fly in style, you’ll need to head to Europe and Asia, which boast nine and eight of the best airports, respectively, while Australia’s Melbourne Airport also makes the cut (No. 19).

Topping the list is Singapore’s Changi Airport, according to Skytrax, which based its ranking on customer satisfaction surveys of more than 550 airports that evaluated things including their terminal layouts, security procedures, seating, transportation options, dining areas and shopping.

Singapore’s largest airport has often dominated the world’s best airport list, despite slipping in the rankings during the coronavirus pandemic. It features scores of shopping outlets and lush indoor gardens

Other high-ranking airports in Asia include Doha’s Hamad International Airport, which landed second on Skytrax’s list, and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (No. 3) . The top airports in Europe included Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (No. 5) and Munich International Airport (No. 7).

Airports in the U.S., most of which are publicly owned and operated by state or local governments or quasi-public entities like airport or port authorities, have suffered from the nation’s spotty investment in infrastructure, according to a report from the Congressional Research Service.

By comparison, 41% of European airports have private shareholders, according to the Airport Council International, an organization that oversees international airport standards and industry practices.

If U.S. airports get no respect, at least one flight hub formerly regarded as the nation’s worst airport is now distinguishing itself: New York’s LaGuardia Airport. SkyTrax cited the facility’s Terminal B, which opened last year, as the world’s best new terminal. The project was the result of a multi-billion dollar public-private partnership, according to the Port Authority.

Here are world’s top 20 airports as ranked by Skytrax:

    1. Singapore Changi Airport
    2. Hamad International Airport
    3. Tokyo International Airport (Haneda)
    4. Incheon International Airport
    5. Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport
    6. Istanbul Airport
    7. Munich Airport
    8. Zurich Airport
    9. Narita International Airport
    10. Madrid-Barajas Airport
    11. Vienna International Airport
    12. Helsinki-Vantaa Airport
    13. Rome Fiumicino Airport
    14. Copenhagen Airport
    15. Kansai International Airport
    16. Chubu Centrair International Airport
    17. Dubai International Airport
    18. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
    19. Melbourne Airport
    20. Vancouver International Airport
