  • Mexican Labubu: How a 2-Decade Old Brand Launched Its Own Blind Box Craze

    [ad_1]

In the mid-aughts, few designs were as popular among young girls in Mexico as Distroller—a Lisa Frank-esque lifestyle and toy brand.

Founded in 2004 in Mexico City by artist and entrepreneur Amparo “Amparin” Serrano, Distroller was known for its vibrant and playful designs featuring iconic motifs like the Virgin of Guadalupe or Amparin’s own whimsical creations.

Its designs appeared everywhere and on everything: school notebooks, collectible bracelets, personalized watches, and toys. The latter often included made-up characters named after Mexican food like Chamoy and Mole—or most notably, the Neonatos, plush wide-eyed creatures that became the brand’s signature products.

Now, the brand is making a comeback with collectible keychains and pop sockets of their popular toy products, using the blind box strategy that’s made Labubus so popular. And fans are flocking to clear out store shelves.

    Distroller Vintash

Neonato’s popularity has crossed borders, entering the US market in 2017 with physical stores in Texas and California. But their popularity waned over the years—coming to halt after the founder’s death in August 2022.

But a recent renewed interest in the nostalgic brand is bringing hundreds of Mexicans to Distroller’s new era. Led by Amparin’s daughter, Minnie West, Distroller Vintash, an offshoot of the Distroller brand, opened its doors on Oct. 31—Amparin’s birthday. “I just saw an old interview where my mom says Distroller was born when she was born, so it seemed fit,” West told Inc. Distroller Vintash operates as a separate company than the still-standing Distroller brand, yet the original motifs and designs are present in the renewed store.

When West decided to revive the brand she came at it with no plan, learning how to run a business day by day.

Like an archeologist trying to find ancient artifacts, West dug into the deepest storage units filled with the objects that filled her childhood: her mom’s original creations.

“My mom treated her creations like they were her children, and so they became my siblings,” West says. “I missed my siblings and thought maybe others missed them too.”

To build a product lineup, West selected what she as “a fan would’ve like to see brought back.” Then she reached out to her mom’s original staff and Neonato manufacturers to join the team.

“These people knew me when I was ten years old,” she says. “Most were shocked at how much I reminded them of my mom and some even cried. But none of them said no.”

West not only brought back old-style plush Neonatos and vintage Distroller accessories, she brought new iterations of the toy as well.

Inspired by the Labubu craze, which her young niece introduced her to, West decided to find a new way for consumers to engage with the toy. And thus, the keychain and pop socket versions were born, with blind box packaging that makes every trinket a collectible surprise.

    Photo: Courtesy company

“We thought about how someone our age could use it in their day to day, you can’t carry around a stuffed animal everywhere but a pop socket and a keychain, that you can,” Fernanda Martinez Contreras, creative director at Distroller Vintash says.

    Nostalgia Sells

Leading up to the store’s opening, the team of 12 at Distroller Vintash teased the launch on Instagram, deploying no formal marketing or reaching out to influencers. From just word-of-mouth between old fans, the store ran out of its 2,000 trinket stock within the first few hours.

“It looked like a scene right out of the Walking Dead,” West says.

A few weeks later, when Distroller Vintash restocked the neonatos, fans lined up as soon as 4 a.m., with the store’s staff eventually running out to get Krispy Kreme donuts to hand out to folks waiting in line.

    Photo: courtesy company

While plans have a steady stock already underway, it will take some time since the toys are made entirely by hand in Mexico. Still, the store is booming with fans who just want to take a stroll down memory lane.

But West’s renewal of the brand is not just borrowing from the archives and creating new ways to enjoy the toys, it is also resurrecting the brand’s original DNA, and irreverent dark humor which got washed away as it focused on young children.

“The community reunited with something that marked their childhood, and now it coming back as an adult version that is also collectible has resonated with them,” she says. “Nostalgia sells, but it’s the authenticity that makes them fall in love.”

As West now deals with stewarding the brand without a business degree, she is betting on her and other’s connection to the brand as her compass, putting herself in the shoes of consumers to guide her decisions.

“To become an entrepreneur is not about being ready, it is about being willing,” she says.

From the get go, West had set out no expiration date for Distroller Vintash, letting consumers guide how much stock to make, and how long to remain open.

“I’m just going to have fun with it,” West says. “That’s what my mom used to do.”

  • Labubu Movie in the Works at Sony (Exclusive)

    [ad_1]

Labubu, the plush toy line of scruffy cute-ugly monsters, could be headed to the big screen.

Sony Pictures, home of the Jumanji movies and, via its animation division, KPop Demon Hunters, has picked up the screen rights to the Chinese doll brand with the aim of making a movie and, in success, launching a franchise.

No producer or filmmaker is attached at this stage, as the deal was just signed this week. It is also too early to tell whether the potential movie would be live-action or animated.

    Sony had no comment.

Designed by Hong Kong-born, European-based artist Kasing Lung and initially made by How2 Work as part of a line of monster figurines, Labubu took off when Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over making and selling them in 2019.

It took a few years, but Labubus exploded in popularity recently for two main reasons. One, Pop Mart’s use of selling them via “blind boxes,” meaning buyers never know what they are acquiring until they open the package, which then also spurs demand. This also creates a superheated secondary market, where collectors pay exorbitant amounts to get the dolls they want online, at pop up sales and in traditional brick and mortar locations. Limited editions artworks and auctions have seen items hit six figure prices.

The second factor was the adoption of the toys by certain celebrities, particularly K-pop group Blackpink member Lisa, who in 2024, used them as accessories.

The toys became a sensation first in Southeast Asian markets before taking the rest of the world by storm. Pop Mart’s profits reportedly soared by 350 percent earlier this year. Labubu is the name of the lead monster doll of the line, which counts leader Zimomo, companion Mokoko, and boyfriend Tycoco as characters among others.

It may be too soon to tell if Labubu will fall into fads such as Beanie Babies or something longer lasting such as Hello Kitty.

While once Hollywood projects inspired toys, in the last decade in particular has seen an inverse, with toys now inspiring movies. The Lego Movie, released in 2014, was perhaps one of the first brand names without an already created storyline or even characters to see a successful major studio production, generating critical acclaim and box office ka-ching. More recently, Barbie accomplished a similar feat, generating over $1 billion at the worldwide box office while nabbing eight Oscar nominations. This week, Sony and Mattel Films announced they were developing a feature based on View Master.

  • The 8 Best Blind Boxes to Buy Online—From Labubu to Crybaby, Starting at $10

    [ad_1]

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, StyleCaster may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Blind boxes have become quite the big deal as of late. I personally can’t go a day without being fed Labubu content on Instagram or seeing a furry creature swinging from a stranger’s belt loop or bag. But there’s a reason why there’s a widespread obsession with these tiny figurines. Each blind box character has its own flair, and you won’t know which iteration you’re going to get until you rip open the packaging. The anticipation of the final reveal, along with wanting to collect them all, on top of making them a fashion statement or seeing your favorite celebrity wearing one, all contribute to its mass appeal.

But which blind boxes should you buy online? We’ve picked out eight options that are trending or on the rise. You’ve got Sonny Angel and Smiski, the two OGs that put blind boxes on everyone’s radar in the past few years. You’ve also got Labubus, which folks can’t get enough of at the moment. And if you’re looking for a more unique design, you might want to check out Hirono because Kim Taehyung from BTS has one. Or perhaps you want a darker, more mysterious character, like a Skullpanda
. No matter your style and preference, there’s bound to be a blind box for you (and your fellow collectors) on this list. Each figure has a different look and story, and thankfully, you can buy them all online.

Where can I buy blind boxes online?

Amazon should be your first stop for official and unofficial versions, especially if you want free, fast shipping (just one of the many perks of being a Prime member). However, StockX might have slightly lower prices. Pop Mart characters can usually be found on Amazon and StockX, and sometimes Walmart. Meanwhile, Dreams Inc. toys—à la Sonny Angel and Smiski—can be harder to find online, with your best bet being third-party sellers on Amazon.

What are the best blind boxes to buy online?

It really depends on your style and preference. If you want a more mainstream look, go with a Sonny Angel
    , Smiski
    , or Labubu
. To stand out from the crowd and be a trendsetter, clip on a Hirono
    or Hacipupu
. As I mentioned before, each blind box figure has its own unique charms, so pick one that best suits your vibe. Keep scrolling to see what they look like and hear their backstories.

    Labubu

The most popular blind box of 2025 is without a doubt The Monsters, also known as Labubus. Celebrities, like Lisa from BLACKPINK, Lady Gaga, and Naomi Osaka have their own plush toys, while collectors have been buying and reselling these critters at an unbelievable pace and price. The Labubu craze doesn’t seem to be dying down any time soon, as new, mainstream, and rare editions are all in high demand, and fans often look for clothing and event advent calendars to accompany their cute yet scary figurines. If you’re a blind box newbie, Labubus are definitely the best place to start. There are a decent amount of options for buying them online, with the most reliable ones being Amazon, Walmart, and StockX. Just be sure to scoop up the ones you want ASAP, since The Monsters tend to sell out in a jiffy.

POP MART The Monsters Wacky Mart Series Blind Box Figures

Most The Monsters series are currently sold out on Amazon, but Wacky Mart blind boxes are still available to shop right this second. This series contains 12 blind box figures, and if you get lucky, you might get the secret edition. Aren’t the milk carton, Cup of Noodle, shrimp tempura, and onigiri versions the most adorable things you’ve ever laid eyes on?

    Hirono

If you want to get ahead of the blind box trends and go for a more unique option (AKA, not a Labubu, Sonny Angel, or Smiski), Hirono figures are poised to dethrone Labubus. Even BTS’ Taehyung is hopping on the bandwagon, as he was spotted with the Living Wild-Fight for Joy Plush Doll
on his airport bag in early October 2025. Chinese contemporary artist Lang brought Hirono to life in 2021 and has released nine series and plenty of non-series characters and collaborations since its inception. Each figurine captures an emotion, both the good, bad, and complex ones. “Lang aims to highlight the subtle fluctuations of life, its ups and downs, and attempts to freeze in time the elusive feelings that reveal our true character – love, joy, sadness, fear, kindness, cowardice, and others. Hirono is the epitome of growth, and a personification of profound human emotions,” according to Pop Mart’s website.

Pop Mart Hirono Living Wild-Fight for Joy Plush Doll

I’m still shocked this doll is still in stock, since K-pop star V was spotted with one recently. Snag this Hirono character before fans sell it out and prices surge (it’s already more expensive than a typical Hirono).

    Sonny Angel

Cheeky Sonny Angel figurines from Japanese toy company Dreams Inc. seem to be the blind boxes that started it all in the past few years. The naked baby angel boy character with whimsical headgear comes in different forms—from regular, mini dolls to the popular Hippers, which are designed to hang from your phone or laptop with a square of adhesive tape. The series I’ve seen the most are the animal ones, though you can’t go wrong with the snack, sweets, flower, and vegetable series.

Dreams Inc. Sonny Angel HIPPERS – Original Mini Figure/Limited Edition – 1 Sealed Blind Box

    On Sale 21% off

It’s important to note that this Hipper blind box is sold by an third-party seller on Amazon. However, it does have over 1,300 reviews to back it up and has earned a 4.4-star overall rating from shoppers who have ordered the product online. Will you get the panda, deer, bunny, or mouse? You’ll just have to buy one (or multiple) for yourself. Pro tip: Shop them in bulk in case you don’t get the version you want, or so you can unbox them with friends and trade!

    Smiski

After Sonny Angel came Smiski, tiny figurines created by Dreams Inc. The green blobs are known to hide in small spaces and corners of your room—or in a display case, if you’re a serious collector. Each series centers around activities from daily life, whether it’s sleeping, exercising, or working. But what makes these characters stand out from its counterparts is that they glow in the dark. Arrange a few on your nightstand for a subtle glow as you doze off and dream of opening more blind boxes.

Dreams Inc. Smiski Glow in The Dark Figure, Bed Series, Random Style, 1 Pack

There are six characters to uncover in the Bed Series, along with one secret edition. You might get storytelling Smiski (reading a book), sleepy Smiski (holding a pillow), relaxing Smiski (wearing a night cap and holding a mug), or even crying Smiski (weeping with its hands over its eyes). Similar to the Sonny Angel above, this blind box is sold by a third-party seller, but boasts over 800 shopper reviews and has a near-perfect rating on Amazon.

    Crybaby

Crybaby is another Pop Mart favorite, easily recognizable by its big eyes, puffy cheeks, and of course, stream of tears. Thai artist Molly Yllom designed her first Crybaby in 2017 and was inspired by her pet (this Pop Mart Instagram post goes into more detail about Yllom and her creations). The characters display emotions we can all relate to, so the next time you feel waterworks coming, whip out your Crybaby and remember that it’s ok to laugh, cry, or all of the above. Everyone does it! Check out the artist’s trendy designs and collaborations (the Powerpuff Girls
    one is a must-buy).

POP MART Crybaby Tears Factory Series

This Crybaby’s headgear and outfits are too precious. You might get a bunny or duck, or maybe even the one that resembles Alice from Alice in Wonderland.

    Pucky

Pop Mart’s Pucky, designed by Pucky the Hong Kong-based artist, is an interesting blind box because it’s named after Puck, the fairy in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The artist’s creations explores fantasy, nature, the spiritual world, and the real world. The figure portrays a more colorful, dreamy side, but also has a darker side.

POP MART PUCKY Roly-Poly Kitty Series

Pucky comes in all shapes and sizes, and the ones in the Roly-Poly Kitty Series are fairies that have transformed into cats. They have a rounded shape and bottom, making them a more unique and playful blind box option. Most of the single blind boxes are sold out on Amazon, so buying them in bulk (a sealed case) on Amazon or StockX might be the best way to go. Side note: the sold-out Egg Beanie Series
is to die for and reminds me of fictional character Gudetama.

    Hacipupu

Cute, childish characters in furry, animal suits and accessories seem to be a common theme for blind boxes. Hacipupu is another example, as this figurine is a wide-eyed little boy in a cozy bear suit, according to this Instagram post from Pop Mart’s Indonesia account. “He chats with his toys, befriends little animals, and finds happiness in the smallest joys,” the post says, adding, “He reminds us to embrace the simple things.” Who’s the mastermind behind Hacipupu? Agee and Yep, a powerful duo of toy designers and artists who prefer to show the world who they are through their creations.

POP MART HACIPUPU Gummy Bear Series

Want a blind box figurine that’s colorful and cuddly? The Hacipupu Gummy Bear Series reminds me of Care Bears. And unlike Labubus, they’re not scary at all—100% cuteness overload!

    Skullpanda

Brought to life by Chinese designer Xiong Miao for Pop Mart, Skullpandas have an edgier, darker, and more mysterious flair. Pop Mart’s website describes them as, “It travels freely between planets, looks for itself, plays different roles and experiences different lives.” They have distinct hair and makeup styles, along with a unique sense of style. Some of the figures feel a little extraterrestrial or otherworldly, which will be sure to capture people’s attention if you have one dangling from your purse.

POP MART SKULLPANDA You Found Me! Series Plush Doll Pendant Blind Box Figures

The You Found Me! Skullpandas look like furballs from another planet. I love how they have different colored hair and eyes, topped with heavy blush. It’s hard to tell exactly what they are, but what I do know is that they’re at the top of my wishlist if I were to order any of the options in this roundup.

  • A Labubu Advent Calendar Was Not on My 2025 Bingo Card—Here’s Where to Pre-Order It Before It’s Too Late

    [ad_1]

As a shopping editor, it’s been advent calendar overload for me lately. From the Squishmallows x TONYMOLY K-beauty skincare cal to Olive & June’s nail cal, you’d be surprised by just how many launch every day. I, for one, was gobsmacked to discover that a Labubu advent calendar exists. I know there’s Labubu everything these days, but an advent calendar??! The hype just keeps growing.

The advent calendar in question is from an Etsy seller that seems to specialize in niche advent calendars. Along with Labubus, the shopsilverstars makes K-pop, coquette, and Taylor Swift advent calendar gift boxes. I might not be in any of these fandoms, but I must say, the Etsy seller does an amazing job of curating these gift sets, and the Labubu one is no exception.

shopsilverstars LABUBU Advent Calendar Gift Box: 12 Days of Surprises

What’s inside the 2025 Labubu advent calendar? Unwrap each item to find outfits, accessories, a mini clothing rack, holiday accessories, keychains, water bottles, pencils, pencil cases, charms, straw toppers, and stickers. The variety is unmatched, but just note that all products in this gift box are Labubu-inspired and not necessarily official merch from Pop Mart, and no doll is included. Regardless, the clothing and accessories are sized to fit your cute little creature, and each item is individually wrapped and labeled by day so you or your giftee can get a true advent calendar experience.

Something else to note is that the Labubu advent calendar from Etsy is available for pre-order right now and will be shipped by November 15, 2025. Be sure to place your order by November 1, 2025 if you want to receive your box by November 15.

    shopsilverstars/Etsy.

Looking at the product images, which clarify that samples vary by box, I’m seeing Crocs, headphones, cameras, knit sweaters, and other adorable accessories on the first slide of Labubu apparel. The second slide shows Labubu merch, such as hair clips, keychains, and pens. And lastly, the third slide is all about getting your doll decked out for the holidays. Dress up your Labubu in a Christmas sweater, striped scarf, and beanie, and surround it with a Christmas tree and wreath for the ultimate holiday photoshoot (wait, am I onto something with a Labubu Christmas card?).

Any and all Labubu collectors should hurry to pre-order this advent calendar from Etsy for $55. It looks like over 20 people have it in their carts at the moment, so don’t take too long to check out!
And if you want to buy a doll to model all of the clothing and accessories from this cal, Walmart sells legit Labubus through its partnership with StockX. We also wrote a comprehensive guide on where to buy Labubus. Shop some options from Walmart below.

  • Pop Mart Unleashes Its Blind Box ‘Chucky’ Collection Just in Time for Halloween

    [ad_1]

Pop Mart, purveyor of Labubu, is branching out in the world of creepy pop culture collectibles with a little help from Chucky. The blind box drop arrives September 12, timed to coincide with Halloween season and aiming to bolster the company’s roster of animation-influenced characters. At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, Pop Mart made a splash with the Monsters series Big Into Energy, Skullpanda, and Peach Riot, as well as its latest Star Wars line.

During io9’s preview at SDCC, Emily Brough, Pop Mart’s head of IP licensing in the Americas, talked about the company’s plans leading into Halloween. “We have this amazing product and these amazing characters and then we’re just extending the excitement and innovation to every touchpoint with our fans. We just love doing that and we love just continuing to bring the creativity of our characters,” she said of creating experiences around specific seasons, including the spooky Chucky release.

The Chucky collab is such a natural choice for horror fans. It will feature toy box-style packaging for various incarnations of the character throughout Don Mancini’s franchise legacy. “We like to lean in, especially in the U.S. Halloween is such a meaningful holiday, so we had a lot of fun here really leaning into that with product development,” Brough said of the Universal Pictures terror toy going mini and all in on the blind-box craze.

As someone scared of owning a 1:1 Chucky, I’m more comfortable with a miniature threat or pulling a Glen or Tiffany. “We made them kind of cute because that’s what we do. There will be more and more coming out around Halloween and some other key holidays for us,” Brough said.

We’re hoping for a second series of Chucky blind boxes because, as fans know, there are so many variants from the movies and the TV show we’d love to get our hands on—give us Phantom Chucky, the Colonel, or even more of Tiffany and Glen(da).

Brough continued, “We’re excited to bring [top IP] collaborations from beloved studios all over the world, and we’re also continuing to build out our artist roster and have the roster of artists that we work with reflect the diversity of the markets that we’re in. So we’re really, really excited to continue to bring in new artists and new IP and then extend those stories into the Pop Mart universe as well.”

As far as extending excitement for their existing licenses and their original IP drops, Brough elaborated on how the new toy titan aims to engage its audience.

“There’s so much great storytelling within all of the characters. At the core we are a pop culture entertainment company and we work with these amazing independent artists from all over the world to bring their characters to life and really bring the storytelling to life through collectible design, [but] we’re looking for ways to continue to extend their stories,” she said of the potential for their properties, such as Kasing Lung’s Labubu, to find life in other entertainment mediums.

“We’ve been doing it kind of [through] short animation for the social media channels to share a little bit more about the story of the series or the stories of the characters and every series is really building out either the story or the personality for each person. That is something that we are doing now and we’re looking forward to continuing to build out the storytelling in new and innovative ways.”

When we asked if that involves U.S. versions of the overseas pop-up and theme park offerings to meet Labubu, Brough doesn’t deny that could be in the works.

“Later this year we’ll be looking at some pop-up shop experiences, and we’ll continue to extend those out throughout not only later this year but also into next year,” she said.

As for getting immersive experiences such as Popland in the states, she added, “It’s a format that we have globally and that we’ve seen a lot of success with so we’re looking forward to bringing that to the US as well as some of those offline experiences. Popland is expanding right now, so over there in Beijing, as the offline experience, [and] we’re constantly looking for ways to extend that.”

Check out the Chucky drop in the gallery below. Buy online here or at your local Pop Mart location beginning September 12.

I feel super uncool admitting that I still don’t own a Labubu—or even an unofficial version (AKA a Lafufu). You’d think I’d be tapped in as a shopping editor and Gen Z-millennial cusper, but I have yet to go down the rabbit hole. However, what I do know about the cute yet creepy plushies—which launched into stardom in early 2024 and have tons of celebrity fans (like Lisa from BLACKPINK, Naomi Osaka, and Lady Gaga, among others)—is that there’s a whole art to buying them online. While Pop Mart is most shoppers’ go-to for copping these doll toys, the latest and greatest in the Labubu universe is that Walmart now sells them, thanks to its partnership with online marketplace and clothing reseller StockX.

This is amazing news for collectors who want to ensure they’re grabbing legitimate Labubus. All of the Pop Mart Labubus on Walmart’s website come verified by StockX, are supported by the online marketplace’s buyer promise (“Shop with confidence knowing every purchase is Verified by StockX. All purchases are backed by StockX’s Buyer Promise.”), and are delivered brand new with tags. Just note that these little creatures are final sale items and are therefore ineligible for returns. As for shipping, products shipped from StockX are part of Walmart’s Xpress Ship program, which sends orders out within one business day. Shipping fees are included in the add-to-cart price for StockX purchases, as well. All of these safeguards ensure shoppers get authenticated Labubus in a jiffy.
