A car careened off the road and crashed into the roof of a Rancho Palos Verdes home on Sunday evening, resulting in one person being taken to a nearby hospital.
The collision occurred around 5:50 p.m. at 28036 Santona Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“It sounded like the whole house exploded,” homeowner Joann Killeen told KTLA.
The driver was an older person who lost control of their vehicle on a nearby embankment and had minor injuries, said watch commander Lt. Rony Del Pinto of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A photo from NBC Los Angeles showed the car embedded in the roof of the home. Images shared by Killeen with KTLA showed that an interior room was trashed, and a gaping hole was left in the ceiling.
Del Pinto said no one else in the home was injured and no arrest was made, calling it a “complete accident.”
Ventura’s famous pier reopened Saturday after massive waves damaged the landmark last year.
Social media posts and news video footage showed people striding onto the pier early Saturday, carrying fishing poles, coolers and folding chairs. The pier — the oldest in California — is a popular fishing and sight-seeing spot and draws tourists, families and lovebirds.
“The Ventura Pier is open!” the city of Ventura announced on its X feed.
High surf from a winter storm pummeled the boardwalk in January 2023. In December, another storm swept through, causing more damage to the pier’s piles and braces.
Mary Joyce Ivers, deputy public works director in Ventura, told KTLA that the city had to replace 37 timber piles, which hold up the deck of the pier, as well as 100 pieces of hardware and cross-bracing and 3,000 square feet of deck board.
“It’s such an important piece of our city,” Ivers told KTLA. “It’s such a great landmark and so many great things happen on this pier for families and our community.”
The repairs cost at least $3.3 million, with the federal government and the state expected to pick up the tab, according to a city news release.
The pier, first built in 1872 as a private commercial wharf, has been repaired or rebuilt countless times throughout its history. It closed in 1992 for 13 months after it was clobbered by waves and reopened after a $3.5-million restoration.
More recently, it closed in 2015 for several months for repairs after another storm.
Ventura purchased the pier for $7,000 in 1940 but gave it to the state in 1949.
In 1990, the city moved to take it back after state officials said they were considering demolishing the structure because of the high maintenance costs.
KTLA “Morning News” weathercaster Mark Kriski is on the mend after suffering a stroke — just weeks after longtime on-air colleague Sam Rubin died from a heart attack.
The local TV station reported the news about Kriski in a social media post on Wednesday, saying he’d had a “mild stroke” earlier this week and that the veteran reporter and nine-time Emmy winner was recovering.
“Mark checked in with us earlier on Wednesday and we’re happy to report that he’s in good spirits,” KTLA Channel 5 wrote. “He also wanted to thank everyone who has reached out.”
Kriski’s wife, Jennifer Gould, told TMZ that the seasoned weathercaster suffered the stroke early Monday morning at their home in Los Angeles.
She told the outlet he was hospitalized but was recuperating.
KTLA wrote, “All of us at KTLA are thinking of Mark and his family at this time and look forward to seeing him soon.”
Kriski’s health scare arrives on the heels of the death of fellow KTLA fixture Rubin.
Veteran entertainment reporter Rubin died May 10 after going into cardiac arrest at his West Valley home. Rubin was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 64.
Rubin’s death devastated the tight-knit crew at KTLA and fans of the reporter.
Kriski and Rubin both joined KTLA’s “Morning News” in 1991, where they spent more than 30 years as on-air colleagues.
One day after Rubin’s death, Kriski wrote on the social media platform X, “There will never be another Sam Rubin. Love and will miss you my friend.”
The post is accompanied by photos of the show’s personalities together, recently and in their earlier days.
At the time of Rubin’s death, founding co-anchor Carlos Amezcua described him as “the connective tissue” that helped him, weather forecaster Kriski and co-anchor Barbara Beck reach their intended audience.
Kriski suffered a serious affliction in 2011, when he was out of commission for several months after contracting pneumonia followed by a hospital-borne “super bug” that landed him in the intensive care unit.
As he was preparing to go back to work, Kriski told The Times the illness was “a life and death experience that has given me a new perspective: On one hand, this was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. On the other hand, it is the best thing that has ever happened.
“You really do start to appreciate the little things in life.”

Los Angeles police are investigating after a woman’s body was found inside a trash can in Sunland on Tuesday morning, a department spokesperson said.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call from a residential neighborhood around 10:30 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered the body of what appeared to be a 30- to 40-year-old female inside the trash can.
Helicopter video from KTLA showed police investigating near a closed black bin at a curb in the neighborhood.
No other information was immediately provided by the police.
LAPD Operations-Valley Bureau detectives are in charge of the investigation.
A child was sexually assaulted when police say a man entered a family’s Culver City home in the middle of the night.
Culver City Police are still searching for the suspect, and are asking for the public’s help identifying the perpetrator. The man was captured on video leaving the area of the child’s Blair Hills home, according to a press release.
He was described as an average height man, wearing dark colored clothing and a beanie with white shoes.
Police in Culver City are searching for this man in connection with the Dec. 2 sexual assault of a minor.
(Culver City Police Dept.)
Police said the man entered the child’s home around 2 a.m. Dec. 2, and left at around 7 a.m. after sexually assaulting the child. The family reported the crime just before 8 a.m., police said.
Police did not disclose the age or gender of the victim, but KTLA reported that the child was a 12-year-old girl.
Parents of the girl spoke to KTLA, saying they learned of the crime when their daughter woke them up wanting to call the police. She told them the man threatened her to stay quiet.
“She’s been the most protective mother over our kids, but this can happen right under her eyes, while she’s asleep,” the girl’s father said of her mother, in an interview with KTLA.
“We want to assure the Culver City community that your safety and well-being is our top priority,” police said in a statement. “Culver City Police investigators are utilizing all available resources and are working tirelessly to identify and locate the suspect involved in this crime.”
Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Lt. Ryan Thompson at (310) 253-6302.
A bag containing human remains was found in Encino early this morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Officers responded to a call of human remains found in a plastic bag at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to a Police Department spokesperson.
The bag was found at Ventura Boulevard and Rubio Avenue — a commercial neighborhood that includes two banks, a hair salon and a family-style restaurant. It appears the bag was located near a dumpster in the rear parking lot of a commercial building, according to video of the scene shot by KTLA.
LAPD officials provided no further details on the victim, except to say the investigation in ongoing and no suspect information at this time.
This is a developing story and will be updated as details are released.
Two cars were shot at on the 91 freeway in Corona on Friday night, and the driver of one was hit in the leg by a bullet, law enforcement officials told KTLA.
The shootings took place around 10:30 p.m. near McKinley St., according to KTLA. A man hit by gunfire was driving east. He was hospitalized and authorities said he was stable. Another car driven by a woman also heading east was hit twice by bullets, but she was not injured, police said.
No arrests have been made and no information on the shooter has been released, police told KTLA.
A pair of violent collisions — at least one of them fatal — closed down multiple lanes on two major L.A.-area freeways early Monday.
The northbound 405 in the San Fernando Valley was shut down after a fatal early-morning crash involving several vehicles. The California Highway Patrol told KTLA that the crash occurred at around 4:30 a.m. at Sherman Way when a Sylmar man, 28, driving an Acura TL collided with a Toyota Camry and a Ford F-250. The Sylmar motorist was killed in the crash, the TV news outlet reported.
A California Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed to The Times that the investigation was ongoing. A SigAlert was issued, and all northbound lanes were closed at Sherman Way until 11:15 a.m.
The shutdown brought the morning commute to a crawl. Officers were allowing motorists to use the right shoulder to pass, according to the CHP spokesperson. Drivers should anticipate an additional delay of 30 minutes.
Another crash occurred Monday morning on the southbound 101 Freeway near the shared exit to Santa Monica Boulevard and Western Avenue around 6:45 a.m., KTLA reported.
A CHP officer said the collision involved injuries but did not confirm any casualties or provide any other details about the crash.
The two right lanes and the on-ramp to the 101 were closed. But as of 11:30 a.m., all lanes had reopened; the SigAlert alert for this accident expired at around 9 a.m. Caltrans employees, however, could still be in the area cleaning up debris from the crash, the officer said.
