  • Netflix Is Planning on Making ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Its ‘Star Wars’ Merchandising Machine

    Harkening back to the Star Wars pre-order cardboard days, Netflix is playing catch-up by making sales for KPop Demon Hunters toys and merch available before the actual products are ready.

    Netflix has announced partnerships with Hasbro and Mattel in response to the massive demand from the fans for KPop Demon Hunters toys. Projected to roll out starting spring 2026, there will be a range of global products, including collectibles, games, and role-play products that will bring the world of Huntr/x and the Saja Boys to the homes of fans eagerly wanting to add their favorite characters to their toy troves.

    Mattel’s KPop partnership with Netflix will feature dolls, action figures, accessories, collectibles, and playsets. We’re already imagining a concert playset with action figures. There will also be collabs with Mattel’s co-brands, which could mean Little People figures for the littlest of Huntr/x fans. But the fan age range is truly from baby to adult, because while I want toys for my little one, I also want the Mattel Creations three-pack of Huntr/x dolls for myself that was announced just today.

    The deluxe fashion dolls, which have yet to actually be revealed, feature Rumi, Mira, and Zoe in their showstopping finale performance looks—and yet I’ve never clicked faster on a pre-order page ahead of the sale going live November 12.

    The Hasbro-Netflix KPop partnership is also gearing up to be expansive and filled with must-haves. Plushes stood out to us immediately—we need high-quality Derpy tigers!—and there will also be youth electronics and role-play options tying in with Hasbro Games, Wizards of the Coast, and Nerf. Please, please make Nerf versions of the amazing Huntr/x demon-fighting weapons. And maybe a Magic secret lair, considering Wizards of the Coast has already done ones for Post Malone and Hatsune Miku.

    Hasbro’s early drop announcement is a card-based variation on Monopoly, Monopoly Deal: KPop Demon Hunters, which is already available for pre-order on Amazon, Target and Walmart, with orders shipping January 1, 2026.

    KPop Demon Hunters products from Mattel and Hasbro will be available to retailers by spring 2026 and continue arriving through the rest of the year. That means they won’t arrive in time for this year’s holiday gift-giving, but you could print out pre-order confirmations to stuff into stockings in the meantime: “IOU the Huntr/x Dolls. Love, Santa.”

  • Netflix’s new deal for KPOP Demon Hunters theater run is major | The Mary Sue

    Netflix just made a huge deal for people who want to see their movies in theaters, and this could change a lot for creators and audiences moving forward. Earlier this year, the conversation started up again as people really wanted to see Netflix put some of these great films into theaters across the United States and beyond. Now, the streaming giant has signed a deal with AMC to put KPOP Demon Hunters back on the big screen for singalongs on Halloween weekend. This is great news for fans of the biggest pop culture moment of the year, but there’s more significance dancing under the surface here.

    KPOP Demon Hunters’s theatrical release is one of the biggest stories of the year for the movie industry. Netflix has been a complicated subject for a lot of observers because the company prioritizes the at-home viewing experience over theatrical. (As you would expect for a business that was built on shipping DVDs to folks houses, and then to streaming movies from the couch.) But, as time has gone on, more high-profile directors have found themselves in the house of TUDUM. Oftentimes, they would love to see their movies get the massive theatrical run that some other directors enjoy. But, there was no mechanism to do that.

    Likewise, KPOP Demon Hunters, in particular has started up a proxy conversation about theater culture and why the movie “don’t hit like they used to.” Having the film effectively win the box office when it premiered in theaters only added flames to that particular fire. (It’s not really that movies aren’t as good, it’s that social media swallowed the Internet whole, and we are awash in opinion. Basically, we live in this meme.) Now, the reported AMC deal might extend beyond KPOP Demon Hunters! And, that’s a fun time for everyone.

    AMC and Netflix open a new era of theater distribution

    Variety reported that AMC and Netflix are looking at doing more together in the future. Their piece says that 400 screens across the United States and Europe are getting the KPOP Demon Hunters release. Now, most big films get more screens on a debut weekend. But, that can come with time. Think of the hype for something like Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery getting this wide of a release from Netflix. There’s a very real chance that movie could win the box office on opening weekend in that scenario as well. It’s something to keep an eye on.

    An AMC spokesperson offered a comment to Variety about the possible partnership. “While the two companies have not had a commercial relationship in recent years, both Netflix and AMC are intrigued by the mutually beneficial opportunities that could arise from this and future collaboration,” they said. “Discussions are underway as to what that may entail, but no further details are being shared at this time.”

     So, we aren’t there yet. But, there’s clear desire to explore more of these theatrical releases for movies previously siloed over to streaming. Fans are gonna be watching this stuff like a hawk. There are movies premiering on Netflix that would draw massive crowds in a theater. Evidence of yet another large scale shift for movie distributors. We inch closer to whatever the future of entertainment is going to be.

    Could more talent come over because of this deal?

    I didn’t bring up Knives Out for no reason. Series director Rian Johnson has been one of the biggest names under the Netflix umbrella. He’s rattled the cage for longer theatrical releases for these movies. He was asked about theatrical prospects in an interview with Variety. The filmmaker is firmly on the side of watching these big movies on a massive screen.

    Johnson sounds like a lot of people on Film Twitter over the last couple of years. “I think theatrical is not going anywhere,” Johnson argued. “We’ve seen if you put a movie people want to see in the theaters, they are going to show up for it, and that experience of being in a full house and having that experience is so important. It’s something that I love and I want more of in the world.”

    This is music to a lot of film fans’ ears. Nothing is set in stone. AMC and Netflix could deepen this partnership. You could see a lot of their big releases really hit the floor against massive competition. Theatrical experiences shifted in 2020. This Netflix deal is the latest signal that we’re headed into uncharted waters.

    Watching KPop Demon Hunters at home on Netflix is always an option. But if you missed out on the record-breaking animated musical’s limited (and lucrative) recent theatrical run, sing it from the rooftops: Huntr/x is coming back to the big screen.

    As Deadline reports, AMC Theatres will be part of the frenzy this time around after sitting out that last cinematic engagement in late August. From October 31 to November 2, you can catch KPop Demon Hunters at AMC as well as Regal, Cinemark, and other chains in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Korea, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand.

    The timing means that you won’t need to put your Rumi Halloween costume and wig away so soon after the holiday; you can just rock it to the theater with all your purple-haired best friends. Though the trade doesn’t note if this is a regular KPop Demon Hunters screening or a designated “sing-along,” expect to be surrounded by fans belting out the tunes, which have not only scored high on the Billboard charts but also seem likely to pave the way for the movie’s upcoming awards-season push.

    While Deadline optimistically notes “a sequel is currently in the works,” there’s been no official confirmation of that from Netflix as of yet. You have to assume, though, that the extraordinary success KPop Demon Hunters has enjoyed—it hit the streamer in June, and the excitement feels like it’s only getting stronger nearly six months later—means we’ll be seeing new adventures (and new songs) from its heroes and villains eventually.

    The breakout winner of the year is Netflix’s animated film, KPop Demon Hunters, which observed unprecedented success. The songs of the movie have been going viral, taking over music charts around the world, beating the likes of some very popular stars. There were rumors of the film being renewed for two sequels, one live-action and musical adaptation. However, the creator of the movies has finally debunked one big speculation, denying the possibility of seeing the HUNTRIX members and the Saja Boys in human forms.

    After much talk about there being a real-life version of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey as weJinu, Mystery, Abby, Romance, and Baby that the mastermind behind the animated characters has finally shared an update. “There’s so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation,” Maggie Kang told BBC News. “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So, totally it wouldn’t work for me.”

    Chris Appelhans, the co-creator of the film, also shared his views on the debate. “One of the great things about animation is that you make these composites of impossibly great attributes. Rumi can be this goofy comedian and then singing and doing a spinning back-kick a second later and then free-falling through the sky.” He added that the joy of the movie comes from its exaggerated gestures, and doing the same to their artwork would make it ‘stilted’.

    With these statements, many hearts in the K-pop world have been broken, but the imaginations for which K-drama actor would suit the roles of these characters best are still going strong. Meanwhile, KPop Demon Hunters recently confirmed talks about a second part to the film going into production. The potential back stories of the characters are likely to be explored in the possible sequel.

    As “KPop Demon Hunters” became the most-watched original title in Netflix’s 18-year history, it shouldn’t be a total surprise that Google announced the top five searched 2025 Halloween costumes are all from the show.

    Yes, ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Halloween costumes are in DC

    Since its release in June, “KPop Demon Hunters” has become the most-watched original title in Netflix’s 18-year history. So, it shouldn’t be a total surprise that Google announced the top five searched Halloween costumes of 2025 are all from the show.

    But, it was a surprise to the Halloween costume industry, according to Lorenzo Caltagirone, the owner of Total Party.

    Total Party, which Caltagirone said is D.C.’s only party and costume shop, is known as Total Fright during the Halloween season. The shop recently moved from Crystal City to the food court level of L’Enfant Shops, under the International Spy Museum.

    “It was such a late, unforeseen hit,” Caltagirone said.

    Luckily, he was able to have some “KPop Demon Hunters” costumes made in a Chinese factory and had it air-freighted over.

    “We got slammed with the 30% tariff, but a lot of people are not even flinching,” Caltagirone said.

    The children’s costumes are $60 and the ones for adults are even more costly — plus, the wings are another $50.

    “It’s on fire right now. We get calls every single day, multiple times a day, and we actually have a list of customers we have to call back,” Caltagirone said.

    Rumi is currently the costume that is in stock at Total Party, but Caltagirone said he’ll have costumes for other characters on Monday and Tuesday.

  • KPOP Demon Hunters fans countdown to live ‘Golden’ performance | The Mary Sue

    Huntr/x is ready for their big live-action moment on Jimmy Fallon’s show! The Netflix juggernaut that is KPOP Demon Hunters just keeps rolling along. This weekend, the trio that play Rumi, Zoey, and Mira popped-up on Saturday Night Live as a part of Bad Bunny’s hosting stint on the show. EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami provide the voices for the Huntr/x trio. The live studio audience was over the moon to see them pop-up live.

    As you can see from the video right here, seeing the KPOP Demon Hunters singers crossover with Bad Bunny was probably going to melt the Internet from the word go. In that short clip, Huntr/x is singing “How It’s Done,” the first song they perform in the Netflix mega-hit. But, that’s not the song they’ll be hitting the stage with tonight. (That’s amazing considering that “How It’s Done” hit the Billboard Hot 100 with 3 other tracks from the musical this summer.)

    Instead, Huntr/x will be performing “Golden” during The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Massive KPOP Demon Hunters fans have had this date circled on their calendars for a little while now. EJAE, Rei Ami, and Audrey Nuna teased the first performance of “Golden” on the Tonight Show social media pages. Now, with the big day finally here, fans are going to look forward to a real-live Huntr/x concert on NBC’s signature late night show and available on social media later.

    HUNTR/X Performs Golden for the first time

    Last week, Netflix hosted a press conference for KPOP Demon Hunters that featured all three of these talented ladies. EJAE was asked about performing “Golden” live and immediately pointed to the team effort to pull off a live performance like this. She recently announced her own single, and all three women know how excited all the fans are for this massive performance.

    EJAE told the assembled press, “Oh my god, rehearsals are incredible. We had so much fun. And, we’ve never sang together. I’m just learning from these ladies because they’re incredible artists themselves and performers. And, just the synergy with all of us. “Golden’s” a hard song!”

    Despite all this talk about how daunting a live performance of “Golden” could be, the ladies are behind each other 100%. Audrey Nuna praised EJAE’s talent and mentioned learning from their ostensible lead singer during the rehearsal process.

    “To sing this song for probably the first time in the world, maybe? In rehearsal? And, just to be in the presence of this, like, honestly generational talent is, for us… Just like, she learns from us, as she was saying. But, we also learn so much from everything that you do,” she told her bandmate.

    Hard to believe we’re one week into October, and the race to get those Halloween fits together is already getting pretty heated. Spirit Halloween continues to drop looks into the month with a new officially licensed Sinners collection that features the lead characters of Ryan Coogler’s vampire blockbuster hit.

  • ‘SNL’: ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Singers Make Surprise Cameo In Skit Sending Up Popular Netflix Film

    NBC’s Saturday Night Live thrives on skewering pop culture, so it was only natural for the show’s first episode since May to acknowledge one of the biggest phenomenons to emerge during its summer hiatus, Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters.

    The Season 51 premiere of SNL, hosted by Bad Bunny, featured a KPop Demon Hunters-themed skit about four friends (Bad Bunny, Mikey Day, Sarah Sherman, Chloe Fineman) reconnecting after a long time. While the others talk about their excitement over the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie One Battle After Another and Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein, Bad Bunny’s Thomas admits he likes KPop Demon Hunters.

    No matter how the subject of the conversation changes — it name-checked two of the biggest controversies of the summer, the Epstein finales and Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ad — Thomas goes back to KPop Demon Hunters and insists that it is not just a movie but tells a true story, with the songs of the fictional K-pop girl group Huntr/x as weapons. He has visions of Huntr/x’s Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami performing.

    His friends don’t take him seriously until Bowen Yang appears dressed as demon Jinu from the movie and demands their souls. He succeeds with Sherman’s character who turns demonic.

    Amid panic and horror, Thomas summons Huntr/x for help. The sketch ends with Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami coming out to perform a snipped from the film’s biggest hit, “Golden.”

  • 5 Things We Want to See in a ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel

    The future of KPop Demon Hunters as a franchise remains unclear even as the massive Netflix hit acquired from Sony Pictures Animation continues to dominate pop culture. The fandom, of course, expects a sequel—and it’s already abuzz with what’s next for Rumi, Zoey, and Mira and their destiny to keep the Honmoon sealed from the demon world.

    Here are just some of the things we’d love to see explored in an eventual (and probably inevitable) KPop Demon Hunters 2.

    Different Demon Hunter Eras

    The mythology of the Demon Hunter lore goes deep if there was always a trio of singers holding the Honmoon down. It would be so cool to explore spinoffs of different eras through a series or anthology of shorts (think Star Wars: Visions) that jumps around time periods and perhaps other countries.

    I’m interested in learning if other cultures also have music magic wielders and how demons might work through commercial music to try to gain control. I want to learn about other bands, maybe in short-form spin-offs, to set up new characters for the future. There are so many possibilities!

    Rumi’s Family Backstory

    Rumi being the love child of a demon and a hunter is an origin story we want to see. It’s perfect for a prequel or somehow pulling a Godfather 2 with dual timelines arcing into how that informs Rumi’s destiny.

    Perhaps we could glimpse her father’s and mother’s past as they meet in the present to further the complexities of good vs. evil between the demons and the humans. If Jinu could be a good-guy demon, maybe Rumi’s father was too. There was so much left unanswered by Celine (Rumi’s guardian); we don’t really know what happened to her parents or how they were dealt with by Gwi-ma and the other good guys.

    Theories have abounded about Rumi being related to Gwi-ma, but being his daughter directly seems unlikely—maybe his granddaughter? Would that be too Star Wars-y? It would be best if Rumi’s lineage was explored without her having to be a product of pure good and pure evil.

    Bringing Jinu Back

    Usually we think characters should stay dead but not this man. Our boy Jinu deserves a second chance. His sacrifice was huge so we’d like to see him return in some way. A popular theory online is that he’s trapped in Rumi’s sword, which would make sense as he gave her his soul and became a part of the prism Honmoon. Plus, if Derpy and Sussie are still around, they might be able to find him through their connection to pull him out of a backdoor of sorts. Maybe he’s human again but doesn’t remember who he was? We want the drama and to have him earn his way back to Rumi; that’s both fulfilling and romantic. We don’t need any more tragic star-crossed lovers; that could have been Rumi’s parents story but it doesn’t have to be hers.

    And speaking of bringing back characters, maybe let’s give the Saja Boys a chance at redemption too. It would be nice to see them come back as comedic relief and try to do good while making more good music. We miss Baby and Abby. Perhaps they can team up with Huntr/x to defeat a bigger threat. Also, more Derpy and Sussie always and forever, please.

    A Full Huntr/x Album

    As someone who wished there was a Powerline album out of A Goofy Movie and who excitedly bought that special edition Josie and the Pussycats (2001) vinyl, I cannot stress enough that we need a whole Huntr/x album. Songwriter EJAE (who does the singing voice for Rumi), along with voice cast singers Audrey Nuna (Mira) and Rei Ami (Zoey), will soon be performing awards-season contender “Golden” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which feels like a test run for a real-life Huntr/x and more music, we hope.

    Huntr/x could really do a whole sequel companion album—that would be so meta! The future of Huntr/x feels unlimited because we’d be seated to see a sequel movie in a theater or at home and go to the official tour with Huntr/x light sticks in hand. Do it for the fans!

    Picture it: Huntr/x is the main band we follow as the sequel introduces a bigger global threat that’s connected to Rumi’s family. Who you gonna call? A story along these lines could bring in other Demon Hunters for an Avengers-style team-up from around the world that’s part world song contest (like Eurovision) and part Mortal Kombat.

    Maybe the latter might be too extreme for the world of KPop Demon Hunters but the baddies have to be vanquished somehow. And these potential team-ups can be characters introduced through friendly competition in the sequel, with their side stories featured in an anthology leading up to a third film where it all comes together.

  • The Moment the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Crew Knew They Had a Hit in ‘Golden’

    As KPop Demon Hunters continues to take over the world, dominating the movie and music charts with its infectious songs and badass heroines, it’s no surprise that two empowering women behind the scenes played a major role in bringing it all to life. Director Maggie Kang and songwriter (as well as the singing voice of main character Rumi) EJAE recently sat down with the press to talk about their collaboration in creating the film’s iconic pop idols and their music catalog.

    And yes, “Golden” did start off on a trip to the dentist.

    EJAE clarified the lore behind the hit song while speaking to io9 and other outlets at a press conference for KPop Demon Hunters today. “It was on the way to the dentist—and guess what I got in the dentist? Gold fillings. Isn’t that insane?” EJAE recalled of the experience, which seemed like one with a huge payoff, as visits to the dentist typically involve a painful cost. This one, at least, would prove worth it. “It was in the car. I got the track [idea],” she continued.

    EJAE added that she didn’t know at the time of writing the songs for the film’s soundtrack that “Golden,” among other hits, would go viral after KPop Demon Hunters‘ launch, let alone become one of the songs of the summer. But she did think that golden dentist visit felt like a special moment when she cracked the song’s melody on the drive home.

    “I was so excited to get my gold filling done and go home and put it down. [I] had my co-writer [Mark Sonnenblick] come on Zoom, and that’s how we would write. And I was like, ‘Oh my God, Mark, I have this melody. I think it’s pretty epic,” she continued, motioning towards Kang, who also played a pivotal part in the brainstorming of the title track. “It was all meant to be, and then the melody idea came out really fast. But obviously there was fine-tuning that was back and forth. But the main hook idea we got, and we’re like, ‘we’re done with that.’ And we’re like, ‘Wait.’ Literally Mark and I and Zoom were like, ‘Did we just write a hit?’ Like, it sounded so good.”

    Kang shared that soon after that, she got to hear the rough early version of “Golden.” “I think it was in Vancouver. I know exactly where I was. I was going to the airport,” Kang recalled, saying that the film’s executive music producer, Ian Eisendrath, had urged her to get on a phone call with him.

    “We were on a phone call and he’s like, ‘Maggie, I just want you to, I just need you to listen to it right now,’” Kang continued. “I was like, ‘Okay,’ so I just take my AirPods out, and I’m listening to it. And I’m just like… I heard the few notes in the beginning and then I just had tears. I knew it was it. I was like, ‘this is it.’ It’s so magical; like right from the beginning, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, we finally got it.’ Then I started crying, and then I cried more because it’s getting better and better.”

    The process to land on the song as we know it came down to the perfect balance of K-Pop and movie musical magic. “It’s definitely a different approach because you have to follow the story a lot, and you have to understand the characters and what they’re going through [in] each scene,” EJAE said of striking the balance between making a good pop song and a good song for a musical. Kang wanted the trio of Huntr/x—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—to feel like a fully fleshed-out band, to the point where the co-director requested that EJAE stay on as the singing voice for Rumi.

    Kang also closely guided EJAE and Sonnenblick on how to use the music they were creating to propel KPop Demon Hunters‘ story. “I come from a K-pop world, so I’m all about: ‘What’s a great melody? What’s a catchy hook? What’s a good concept?’ That’s always what I’m thinking about,” EJAE explained. “Even with ‘Golden’, I needed a title that just sticks—’Golden’ sticks, you know? That’s what I’m focusing on, and Mark is focusing on the storyline, so it was a lot of us going back and forth, policing each other.”

    “I love musicals, by the way, but in pop form, it can get a little different,” she continued. “Sometimes musicals, you could, because you’re saying a lot of things, it could get wordy sometimes. As a pop writer, we try to avoid that.”

    Ultimately, EJAE and Sonneblick leaned on each other to remind themselves of balancing the fine line in making the film’s songs. “[I’d] say, ‘oh, that sounds weird’, and then Mark would tell me, ‘Hmm, that’s off the storyline. I know that’s a really cool line, EJAE, but let’s get back to the story,’” EJAE concluded.

    “So that was a lot of back and forth; it was really, really challenging, and I remember Mark and I were like, ‘This is so hard, but if we pull this off, we’re freaking geniuses.’ And we pulled it off.”

    KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.

  • Netflix’s Biggest Movie of 2025 Breaks Another Record

    KPop Demon Hunters, the hit Netflix movie that was released earlier this year, has broken another record.

    KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix in June 2025. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the animated musical film has since become the streaming service company’s most popular movie of all time, surpassing 2021’s Red Notice.

    What record did Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters break?

    Per Variety, KPop Demon Hunters has now remained in the Netflix Top 10 for 15 straight weeks. This makes it the longest-running title on the English-language films charts to ever do so, once again surpassing Red Notice, which charted 14 times total.

    “The new achievement is especially impressive when considering that KPop Demon Hunters on the chart has been consecutive, whereas Red Notice originally charted for 12 weeks in a row before making two appearances later on,” the article notes.

    A sing-along version of KPop Demon Hunters was released in limited United States theaters for two days in August. During that weekend, the movie grossed approximately $19.2 million in the United States and Canada, making it the first Netflix film to ever finish in first place over the weekend. It has also become the first film soundtrack to have four of its songs on the Billboard Hot 100’s top ten.

    The official synopsis for KPop Demon Hunters reads, “When they aren’t selling out stadiums, Kpop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat. Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet – an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.”

    The voice cast of the movie includes Arden Cho as Rumi, EJAE as Rumi’s singing voice, May Hong as Mira, AUDREY NUNA as Mira’s singing voice, Ji-young Yoo as Zoey, REI AMI as Zoey’s singing voice, Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, and more.

    KPop Demon Hunters is streaming globally on Netflix.

    The hype for KPop Demon Hunters only grows as its summer success blazes a trail into the fall and fans clamor for more.

    The Sony Pictures Animation feature, which Netflix acquired for the platform, has hit another first, as it has moved into the top spot on Nielsen’s overall top 10 streaming chart, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The numbers don’t lie and if the rush to get out merch and costumes is any indication, the Netflix animated hit is truly this generation’s Frozen. “Golden” and “Soda Pop” are on constant rotation in my and my friends’ social media posts, at least so I can attest to that.

    The Nielsen streaming charts are dominated by Netflix projects—including Wednesday season two, which previously held the overall top spot and had a lot of anticipation built around its return. But it’s truly powerful to note that Mira, Rumi, and Zoey join Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) as the streamer’s most popular heroines. Demon boys and Hydes beware!

    KPop Demon Hunters was released August 23, and it took over the number one spot in the last week of August. Its highest weekly viewing total sits at 1.12 billion minutes in the United States, easily beating out other mainstays such as Bluey and SpongeBob SquarePants.

    This milestone also marks KPop Demon Hunters’ 11th week appearing in the Nielsen charts, topping its own record for original streaming film that it set the week prior.

    As the holidays and award season start to kick up, fans really only have the movie to go to until retailers roll out more offerings for the surefire franchise hit in the making. You know there’s already clamoring for Halloween party screenings, New York Comic Con cosplay, and holiday fun that will see more Huntr/x and Saja Boys love, so these numbers are sure to continue to keep going up, up, up. It’s their moment.

  • ‘Wicked: For Good’ Wants to Crash That ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Soundtrack Oscar Push

    KPop Demon Hunters is a huge hit—both the record-breaking movie itself and its record-breaking soundtrack album. No doubt Netflix has already started having Oscar dreams, with nominations all but guaranteed in the Best Animated Feature as well as Best Original Song categories. The biggest hit is even titled “Golden,” just like the statuette! But another musical on the horizon would like you to remember the votes aren’t tallied yet.

    That would be Wicked: For Good, the follow-up to last year’s very successful Wicked—which notched 10 Oscar nominations and picked up a pair for its lavish costumes and production design. (It also answered fan demand by holding “singalong” screenings, as KPop Demon Hunters also did recently.)

    But one category it didn’t enter into was Best Original Song, since Wicked‘s numbers all came from the long-running Broadway musical. That didn’t stop the Academy Awards from bringing stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo out to sing onstage, and now it seems Wicked: For Good is hoping for a return visit.

    As Variety reports, confirming remarks Jon M. Chu made to Entertainment Weekly last week, Wicked: For Good‘s soundtrack will feature two new songs, one for each of its witchy leads. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the original Wicked songs for the 2003 musical, penned both; today their titles were confirmed as “No Place Like Home,” for Erivo’s Elphaba, and “The Girl in the Bubble,” for Grande’s Glinda.

    As Variety notes, both songs “are expected to be Oscar-eligible, unlike any of the songs from the first movie, which had added verses but did not feature any completely new songs.”

    In a statement to the trade, Schwartz said, “In addition to two brand new songs, there is a lot that’s new in several other existing songs. So not only listeners coming to the score for the first time, but long-time fans of the original Broadway cast album, will have a great deal to discover.”

    Don’t expect to get more than teases of the new material before the movie, though: Wicked: For Good and its soundtrack both release November 21. Do you predict either of the new songs will be a threat to KPop Demon Hunters when awards season rolls around?

  • ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Producer Accused of ChatGPT Use for Songwriting

    Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters has stayed in the conversation in large part because of its blockbuster soundtrack, but now one of those songs has come under scrutiny for potentially getting an assist from ChatGPT.

    In a recent discussion in Seoul for OpenAI’s newly opened Korean office, songwriter Vince reportedly claimed he used the controversial technology to help pen the song “Soda Pop,” performed in the movie by the demonic Saja Boys. He is credited as one of several co-writers on the track, according to a Netflix blog post.

    A now-deleted tweet (preserved in a screengrab on Reddit) said to be penned by an OpenAI exec read: “Fav moment from the launch celebration was hearing singer/songwriter Vince share that ChatGPT helped him write ‘Soda Pop’ from KPop Demon Hunters! It apparently gave him ideas to make it sound ‘more bubbly.’”

    Here’s where things get complicated. The alleged use of AI to help write “Soda Pop” was first reported in the English-language version of Joongang Daily—but the original Korean text of the article makes no mention of ChatGPT being used specifically during the production of KPop Demon Hunters’ music.

    A translator on Gizmodo’s staff revealed Vince instead made a far broader statement—”I sometimes use ChatGPT to get some inspiration while producing K-Pop”—while discussing how AI technology is already being used in the K-Pop industry.

    As Kotaku has pointed out, KPop Demon Hunters has previously had to fend off allegations surrounding its characters being made with AI. Rei Ami, one of the singers for the movie’s girl group Huntr/x, has also had to insist that she and co-singers Ejae and Audrey Nuna are real human beings.

    io9 has reached out to Netflix for clarification and will update should we hear back.

  • ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Just Can’t Stop Breaking Billboard Records

    The shine hasn’t worn off KPop Demon Hunters or its music quite yet. According to Variety, the film’s soundtrack has hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200, and the Huntr/x song “Golden” has held at #1 in the Hot 100 for the fifth week in a row.

    As a result, it’s now the longest-running song by an animated band in charting history. That can be owed to a recently released deluxe edition that features the movie’s songs combined with sing-along, instrumental, and a cappella versions of each track. With this, Huntr/x has dethroned 1969’s “Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies and the Chipmunks’ 1958 hit “The Chipmunk Song,” which placed at #1 for four weeks each during their respective years. Its place in the Top 200 marks the first animated movie to lead since Encanto back in 2022, which it held for nine consecutive weeks.

    If that weren’t enough, three other KPop songs placed in the Top 10 for the 100 bracket. Saja Boys’ “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop” stayed in the middle at numbers 4 and 5, respectively, and Huntr/x’s “How It’s Done” went up to number 8. The two fictional bands previously went to war on the charts earlier this summer and went back and forth as to which was charting better than the other, just like in the film.

    That KPop Demon Hunters is continuing its momentum bodes well for Netflix and Sony, who are hoping to have a long-term franchise on their hands and possibly get some Oscars in the process. Until news on either breaks out, the only thing to do is keep listening to the music.

  • Sony’s CEO on Seeing ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Become a Big Hit… for Netflix

    The success of KPop Demon Hunters has been one of the stories of the summer. Sure, Lilo & Stitch was the highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office. Yes, Superman did well enough to launch the DC Universe. And of course, it was awesome to see an original genre film like Weapons clean up. But above all that, it’s the animated musical that became not only Netflix’s biggest movie ever but also a box office hit in a single weekend that history will look back on with most interest.

    Especially since Sony sold the movie to Netflix.

    It’s been well-documented, but in 2021, Sony and Netflix struck a deal where Sony sold Netflix a bunch of different projects that included KPop Demon Hunters. So, Netflix owned the rights, paid for it to be finished, and then added it to its service. Very quickly after the film’s June debut, its success and appeal became incredibly obvious. And, this week, the CEO of Sony Pictures, Ravi Ahuja, reflected back on kind of letting a massive hit out of the studio’s grasp.

    “Obviously, in hindsight, it’s such a big hit,” Ahuja said at a conference reported on by the Wrap. “It was during the pandemic. It’s K-Pop-themed, very specific film. Netflix paid the whole cost, plus a profit premium. At the time, it made sense. But now you look at the success and think maybe it could have been theatrical.”

    But would it have been as big a hit in theaters without its streaming lead-up? We’ve written about this, and Ahuja isn’t so sure. “It started out on Netflix, and word of mouth made it grow. In theatrical that is a lot harder to do,” Ahuja said. “I think it was in the right home. I think KPop Demon Hunters’ right home was Netflix, but it is an interesting question, could it have been theatrical? It is hard to say. It’s possible but I don’t think it’s so obvious.”

    What’s even less obvious now is how the companies will deal with the fallout: the success of the soundtrack, inevitable sequels, spinoffs, and live-action remakes. All of it is in the works, and both Sony and Netflix will be involved in some way.

  • Why Netflix’s IRL Flexes Are All About Streaming

    The one-time slayer of Blockbuster now has a bona fide blockbuster theatrical hit.

    Netflix scored its first No. 1 box office win with animated sing-along “KPop Demon Hunters.” And the company is about to open two big entertainment and shopping venues in the U.S., with more on the way. But Netflix isn’t pivoting to theatrical movies or theme parks: The IRL extensions are fully designed to support its massive streaming biz.

    “KPop” pulled in an estimated $18 million-$20 million at the box office over the weekend of Aug. 22-24. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but some incremental cash was not Netflix’s primary goal when releasing the sudden streaming sensation into theaters. The simple truth still holds: Netflix doesn’t really want you to go to the movies — Netflix wants you to watch Netflix.

    Netflix has “these bespoke releases” for films, often for Oscar-qualifying runs, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said this spring at the Time100 Summit. While he’s a fan of the theater “experience,” he doesn’t see a future for the business: Making films “for movie theaters, for the communal experience,” he said, is “an outmoded idea.”

    Meanwhile, Netflix has had success over the past few years with live experiences including “The Queen’s Ball: A Bridgerton Experience” and Broadway’s “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” It also has a line of merch based on its TV and film franchises, and is rushing out a set of Funko Pop! figurines based on the “KPop Demon Hunters” characters to capitalize on the movie’s buzz. But the point is to super-serve fans and, ultimately, ensure they stay subscribed to the streamer every month.

    The company’s first two Netflix House destinations will open their doors in Philadelphia and Dallas in November and December, respectively. A third location is set to go live in 2027 in Las Vegas, where Netflix has a themed dining experience, Netflix Bites, at MGM Grand.

    These 100,000-square-foot Netflix Houses are being built to draw fans who can go get regular hits of “Squid Game,” “Wednesday,” “One Piece,” “Stranger Things” — and now, naturally, “KPop Demon Hunters” — in the form of activations, merch, restaurants and screenings centered on the Netflix-owned IP. New immersive experiences created for the first two Netflix House locations include “Stranger Things: Escape the Dark” in Dallas and “Wednesday: Eve of the Outcasts” and “One Piece: Quest for the Devil Fruit” at King of Prussia Mall in Philadelphia. The Dallas location at Galleria Dallas will also house “Squid Game: Survive the Trials,” a permanent version of “Squid Game: The Experience,” which previously debuted in cities including New York and Seoul.

    But Netflix, for now anyway, isn’t trying to build Disneylands. The streamer’s strategy in this sector is similar to Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter-themed studio-tour experiences and stores, which are “really profitable” in capitalizing on the existing, persisting Wizarding World fan, says Jessica Reif Ehrlich, senior media and entertainment analyst at Bank of America Securities.

    “It seems like [Netflix is] leveraging their properties in a very smart way and just adding to it,” Ehrlich says. “And you can rotate the brands.”

    That is the plan: Netflix has said that beyond the initial slate announced for Netflix House, it is developing future experiences and installations surrounding shows and movies including “Bridgerton,” “Love Is Blind,” “The Floor Is Lava,” “Big Mouth,” “Outer Banks,” “Money Heist,” the “Knives Out” franchise and “Army of the Dead.”

    That strategy shows that Netflix wants visitors to focus on what’s currently streaming or just coming up and is ready to pivot to accommodate the latest trend and buzz: like announcing the last-minute addition of “KPop Demon Hunters” experiences to the soon-to-open Netflix House locations, even though it can’t yet say exactly what those will be. What’s important is fans know it’s going to be there, and they’re talking about it.

    “I think it drives further affiliation with the brand or loyalty to a brand or to a story,” Ehrlich says. “It just expands everything that they have, and it is a good promotional outlet.”

  • ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Songwriter on Crafting the Movie’s Breakout Hit

    The biggest earworm from KPop Demon Hunters, “Golden,” has helped propel the hit Netflix and Sony animated feature to success atop both the streaming and music charts. And now we know a bit more about the lore behind the Huntr/x track.

    Songwriter and singing voice of Rumi, one of the film’s lead demon hunters, EJAE talked about the film’s breakout song with Variety.

    “One of the biggest assets I brought to the movie, or when writing the songs, was being bilingual,” she shared about bringing cultural authenticity to the film’s music to help reflect the filmmaker’s vision. “It was important for our co-director, Maggie Kang, to have Korean in the lyrics, and I just love that it’s not just the verses; it was in the actual song too.”

    EJAE elaborated that the mandate from the filmmakers to the music team came down to having the word “gold” in the leading Huntr/x track. “It needed to have the word gold in it and the feeling of what Rumi was going through.”

    It also needed to introduce the struggles of Rumi’s bandmates that they faced as a team: “It needed a pep talk and the idea that we can do this together.”

    As the band’s lead figure, Rumi was someone EJAE related to when she was coming up as a K-Pop trainee. “She’s incredibly hardworking and has that leadership. She puts her best foot forward, but she tries to hide her imperfections and flaws.”

    Her had work followed her to the most random of places for inspiration: “I actually wrote the melody on my way to the dentist.”

    KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.

  • ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Moving Ahead As Sony and Netflix Engage In Deal Talks

    Once a demon slayer, always a demon slayer. Or at least, that’s the hope.

    Sony Pictures is in talks with Netflix to make an animated sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The fantasy musical has turned into the sort of cultural sensation every Hollywood studio or streamer tries to hunt down, even at great expense, but rarely finds.

    The events of the past few days — including Netflix dropping a surprise sing-along version of the Sony Pictures Animation film in theaters over the Aug. 22-24 weekend, or Demon Hunter becoming the most-watched English-language film of all time on the streamer — are reigniting the debate as to whether Sony’s film empire gave away the keys to the kingdom in 2021 when handing the movie over to Netflix to release, versus bankrolling a big-budget theatrical title on its own from a first-time feature director (Maggie Kang) with no major stars.

    More often than not, box office observers and rival studio execs say Sony made the safe and even the right call, considering that original animation is on a downward spiral at the box office in the post-pandemic era (known animated IP fares better). Even Pixar isn’t immune. This summer, Elio, also an original story, opened to $21 million, the worst debut in the history of the storied animation studio founded by Steve Jobs and later sold to Disney. Elio topped out at $73 million domestically and $152 million globally against a net budget of $150 million before a major marketing spend (ouch).

    Some say Sony should have held out and taken the full-blown theatrical route, even if it was a financial risk. “It was certainly a mistake for Sony to give it up,” says one insider on the exhibitor side. “Sounds like this was new IP, they didn’t think it would land and was just bad luck for them.”

    But there’s a silver lining: When it comes to profit margins, a studio hopes for a range of 10 percent to 12 percent. In the case of Demon Hunters, Sony could be looking at 20 percent to 30 percent.

    The deal for the first Demon Hunters — which was part of a larger, multi-title pact struck during the depths of the pandemic in 2021 — saw Netflix agreeing to cover the film’s entire $100 million budget in addition to paying Sony a fee of $25 million, or 25 percent of the budget and certain other costs. Sony also receives a piece of soundtrack sales, as well as music publishing fees for certain songs. Merchandising rights, however, belong solely to Netflix.

    On Tuesday, Netflix announced that KPop now ranks No. 1 on its list of most-watched English-language films with 236 million total views, ahead of previous crownholder Red Notice, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. That’s quite a feat for a film such as KPop that’s a two-quadrant movie targeting families and females 25 and younger. (Netflix’s all-time top 10 list is based on views in a title’s first 91 days of release.)

    And the film’s soundtrack now holds the distinction of being the first to have four simultaneous Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, led by Huntrix’s “Golden.”

    Sony also gets a portion of the money Netflix is paying Sony’s animation company Imageworks, home of the visually groundbreaking, Oscar-winning Spider-Verse films (like Spider-Verse, an Oscar campaign is being planned for Demon Hunters).

    For the deep-pocketed Netflix, the victory of Demon Hunters is sizeable, and underscores the importance of keeping kids and families happy as part of its overall strategy to keep subs satiated, which is Netflix’s top concern. One source says kids are watching Demon Hunters again and again, or six to eight times on average (for some, it’s more).

    Insiders on both sides say the Sony-Netflix partnership has gone smoothly (although of course they would say that). It is true there was a built-in bond: Netflix animation head Hannah Minghella worked for years at Sony, including with now-Sony animation head Kristine Belson. In a recent statement to THR, Netflix head of film Dan Lin went out of his way to give a shout out to Sony, saying that he and Minghella are “thrilled to be supporting” Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans “and Kristine Belson and her team at Sony Animation” as their studio partner.

    In the same exchange with THR, Lin noted that Netflix allows its films to build an audience organically and over time. That’s a luxury theater owners can’t afford to offer if a film has a sluggish start. “As word of mouth spread and social media caught on, we saw viewing really take off and the movie became a cultural phenomenon — it’s one of the only films to grow its audiences in its fifth and six weeks of release,” Lin said.

    Kang and Appelhans have spoken publicly in the broadest strokes about a possible sequel, and are considered integral to the future of Demon Hunters. Sony insiders say they have held preliminary conversations with the directors but as of yet, there is no deal on the table. That’s because the first priority is to sort out the Netflix-Sony pact. It’s also important to note that Netflix cannot make a sequel without Sony, and Sony cannot make a sequel without Netflix.
