CBD Bus Check: HC orders CBD bus check for permit violations Kolkata | Kolkata News – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has directed the state transport department and Kolkata Police to inspect all buses entering the central business district for repeated permit violations. Transport officials, along with DCP and the Maidan PS OC, will start the exercise on January 22.
The directive came following a PIL by petitioner Kakali Dutta who had claimed many buses in CBD and heading to Howrah bridge operated without permits and their services were illegal.
“Fine is a deterrent for a singular violation but it appears the violation continues and mere imposition of fine will not prevent the illegal operations… It is also not clear what happened after the State Transport Authority’s show cause notice dated March 13…” held the division bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya. —Dwaipayan Ghosh

Hawkers: Hawkers block pilgrims’ progress in CBD – Latest News | Kolkata News – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Kolkata: When it comes to encroaching on the entrance to places of worship, hawkers in Kolkata do not discriminate against any group. Be it a church, a mosque, a gurdwara, a temple or a synagogue, shrines across all religions in the city are grappling with the same problem, that of vendors taking over nearby space and blocking visitors’ way.
Not only do devotees have to jostle their way through shops and crowded pavements, the management of the shrines also faces difficulty arranging for ceremonies.Complaints to authorities have yielded no result. Instead, some have spread out their fares more and some have been found dumping the goods in front of the gates.
TOI, while making the rounds of some of the places of worship in the central business district, found that one had to wade through a sea of people and goods—stuffed toys, utensils, grass brooms, you name it—to reach Portuguese Church at the crossing of Canning Street and Brabourne Road. Hawkers had even laid out their fares in front of the main gate of the church, also known as the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary. “On special occasions, like Christmas, we make requests and the main gate is cleared for a couple of days,” said a representative of the church.
Vendors have surrounded Beth El Synagogue on Pollock Street in such a way that someone who doesn’t know is bound to miss the place.

  • 30% of new public toilets in Kolkata to be reserved for women, 75 of these in CBD & shopping hubs | Kolkata News – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

30% of new public toilets in Kolkata to be reserved for women, 75 of these in CBD & shopping hubs | Kolkata News – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

KOLKATA: On the day President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the women’s reservation bill that provides 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and assemblies, Kolkata Municipal Corporation said it has decided to reserve 30% of the new public toilets to be set up in the city for women.
The KMC plans to construct at least 400 new public toilets across 144 wards.
“We will reserve at least 30% of these newly constructed toilets for women. The rest will be for both men and women,” said an official of KMC’s slum development department that looks after construction and maintenance of public toilets in the city.
At least 75 of these women’s-only toilets will be set up in areas frequented by women – the central business district, shopping zones and around hospitals – and guarded 24×7 by women.
Mayor Firhad Hakim said the KMC was actively scouting for land to construct these toilets. Eleven sites had already been identified for the purpose.
“Primarily, we need land in the city’s central business district, where women come to work in large numbers. We also need land in the shopping zones as women feel helpless in these areas as they find toilets here that are unhygienic. We have also decided to shift from the traditional pay-and-use toilets to modern ones with features like changing rooms and nursing areas,” Hakim said.
The KMC is set to launch two mobile toilets for men and women in neighbourhoods that do not have public toilets, the mayor said, adding that more such toilets…

  • Park St: ‘use Park St, Beliaghata To Reach Cbd, Avoid Maa’ | Kolkata News – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Park St: ‘use Park St, Beliaghata To Reach Cbd, Avoid Maa’ | Kolkata News – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has urged commuters from east Kolkata, including Salt Lake and New Town, to the central business district to travel by Beliaghata Main Road or Beliaghata Canal Side Road, CIT Road (Park Circus) and Park Street instead of EM Bypass, Maa flyover and AJC Bose Road flyover. The aim, said police, was to decongest the Maa-AJC Bose Road flyover that handled over 600 vehicles a minute during peak office hours and to better utilize other roads with less traffic.

Police are sending out the message on social media and display boards, calling the diversion a “smarter choice”. “Use Park Street and alternate roads (Beliaghata Main Road/Beliaghata Canal Road) from EM Bypass to reach CBD, Esplanade during peak traffic hours. Make the smarter choice… choose Park street for a seamless commute to Dalhousie-Esplanade,” the police advertised on Monday.
Cops urged Park Circus-bound vehicles to take Park Circus connector instead of Maa flyover. “We will display the possible travel time on Maa flyover and Park Circus connector,” said an officer.
