  • Can you put a hold on items at Kohl’s? Woman tries with viral ‘spicy’ book blanket: ‘She asked her manager’

Few online communities are forces to be reckoned with quite as fiercely as BookTok. Famed for its buying power and proclivity toward impassioned fandom, BookTok has been driving literary pop culture for years now—particularly regarding the “romantasy” genre.

A portmanteau of “romance” and “fantasy,” romantasy has been enjoying a massive craze for years now, from the steamy fae romance series ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses‘ to the heat-filled dragons-and-magic books of ‘Fourth Wing.’

This genre is rife with swords, steam, and soulmates. It is famed for being chock-full of delicious romance tropes.

As such, is it any surprise that Kohl’s has made a “spicy blanket,” literally covered in romantasy tropes, and it’s gone viral?

The quest for the spicy blanket

In a viral TikTok first posted on Jan. 23, a book-lover named Abby (@abbyreads0) documented her search for the famed “spicy blanket.” Other videos on TikTok reveal this much-coveted blanket to be bright pink and covered in tropes like “enemies to lovers” and “slow burn.” Her clip has since racked up over 2.1 million views.

Abby starts off her on-camera journey “braving the rain and the cold” to find the blanket for a friend. She films herself walking through Kohl’s and arriving at the blanket section. However, she was met with a glaring absence of spicy blankets.

And so, in the same video, she documents another attempt on a different day, with no luck.

“It’s not looking good,” she frets. “I talked to someone and I said, ‘Are you getting more? And she said she doesn’t know, but they are still getting Valentine’s Day stuff, so there’s hope … I will come back next week.”

Alas, next week arrives, and Abby films herself not finding the blanket yet again. Thankfully, at this point, a worker swoops in to help.

“Hope is not lost,” Abby says, revealing that a “kind” Kohl’s employee gave her an insider scoop. “She asked her manager and he said to come back on Thursday ’cause they have another a truck coming. So I’m gonna come back on Thursday.”

    Putting the blanket on hold

Then, the employee pulled the most helpful move of all: Offering to put the blanket on hold when it came in.

“She took my information down,” Abby says. “She was like … ‘If you like, ask me, I can put a hold on them.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, can you put a hold on them? So, we’re hopeful.”

Alas, Abby’s story ends in mild tragedy. On yet another day of searching, the blanket is still not in stock, and another employee says that might not be changing anytime soon.

“I’m officially calling it on the search,” Abby finishes. “I talked to another manager today, and she said that all the stuff has been taken off the truck. And then she looked up the blanket specifically and said, because it is out of stock online, they’re not likely to get it anywhere anymore. So, unfortunately, that’s it.”

Viewers applauded Abby for the lengths she went to in order to procure a gift for a friend.

“I think you’re an awesome friend for caring enough to go on a wild goose chase for something so simple you know it would be so meaningful to them,” one person commented. “I would love to have a friend who cared about me that much!”

What is Kohl’s official hold policy?

While Kohl’s website outlines its Buy Online, Pick Up in Store policy (which seems to be the “official” way to get something put on hold), it does not detail an official policy for in-store holds.

Instead, it seems in-store holds are subject to the policies of individual locations and their respective management personnel. Online members of the subreddit r/employedbykohls have referenced “Kohl’s [allowing] customers to hold items in [their] back room for a day or two.”

The Mary Sue has reached out to Abby and Kohl’s via email to request additional comment.

  • Why These Small Businesses Are Moving Into Malls

For decades, small company owners hoping to move their business or expand it to a mall were confounded by a lack of available space, or prohibitively high rents for empty storefronts. Now, as the number of big box and restaurant chains pulling out of those locations increases, the entrepreneurs that want to set up shop in shopping centers once reserved for giants like JCPenny, Macy’s, and Starbucks are finding mall vacancies in many parts of the U.S. — and at times paying lower per-foot rents than those corporate giants.

The list of large companies that have gone bankrupt or closed numerous stores in 2025 has been long, and includes craft chain Joann, Party City, Kohl’s, Big Lots, Claire’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and many more. While not all the big retailers and food businesses shuttering outlets have been based exclusively in malls, many maintain sizable footprints in U.S. shopping centers — including Starbucks, which last week announced hundreds of location closures. The subsequent slump in occupancy rates at many malls is now allows many smaller businesses to set up shop in them for the first time.

A recent study by commercial real estate company Cushman & Wakefield estimated the national vacancy rate in malls at 5.8 percent in the second quarter of 2025. While that may not sound high, it represented a 20 basis point increase over Q1, and a 50 point hike since the same period in 2024. That evolution is now leading many owners or managers of underoccupied shopping centers to rethink their earlier aversion to renting to smaller businesses, whose lower cash reserves often prevent them from taking on assured, long-term leases.

Instead, according to a recent report by CNBC, entrepreneurs are not only finding vacant space in malls available to rent. But they’re often also negotiating considerable deals on rent rates, business set up assistance, continual occupancy services, and shorter lease durations from owners. Some shopping centers set aside space for smaller businesses on more flexible terms, in hopes of converting them to longer-term leases, according to ICSC, a trade association of shopping center owners. Not surprisingly, more entrepreneurs want o seize those opportunities to move into shopping centers.

“That kind of access wasn’t on the table for startups and small businesses three years ago in most metro areas,” Teresha Aird, co-founder and chief marketing officer of the Offices.net real estate brokerage, told the business news channel. “Now it is, and they’re making the most of it to test physical presence without overextending capital… The result is a more flexible, opportunity-rich environment that can be a lifeline for entrepreneurs navigating tight margins and competitive markets.”

The new opportunities for smaller businesses to rent mall space aren’t evenly spread across the country. For example, experts note that availability of nearly any commercial space in the New York City area is so tight that even converted warehouses are tough to lease. But many major U.S. urban centers — especially in medium-sized city centers and inner-ring suburbs of larger cities where big retailers have shut stores — the chances for entrepreneurs to move in on malls are multiplying.

To be sure, some shopping center owners continue betting they have more to gain by waiting for big box, anchor tenant occupants. Rather than renting to entrepreneurs with smaller budget looking for shorter leases at lower costs, many mall managers hold out for so-called “credit tenants” with large enough reserves to sign 5- to 7-year contracts at full market rates.

But an increasing number of mall landlords are feeling enough pressure on their vacancy rates and revenue that they’re now looking to rent to small businesses — even some pop-up stores. Many are even adding sweeteners to bring entrepreneurs aboard.

“In West Des Moines, a family-owned restaurant recently assumed an old chain pizzeria location at a rent of almost 30 percent below the original asking rent,” local real estate broker Jacob Naig told CNBC — adding the owner helped finance the kitchen redesign. “Such a deal wouldn’t have been possible just five years ago.”

There also may be another factor at work in the small business migration to malls. According to a recent study by location intelligence and foot traffic data company Placer.ai, small and niche retail and food companies are helping transform the entire shopping mall experience.

That involves giving consumers used to swooping in for fast, targeted buying blasts reasons to stay longer. Former single-store visitors to malls may now also get medical or wellness treatment, go to the gym, see local service providers, take in a spa, and enjoy a fancier meal than typical food court businesses usually offer.

As part of that, entrepreneurs can take over prime locations that national chains gave up, and add local, quality goods, meals, and services that effectively rebrand some malls. At the same time, they benefit from the work of former corporate occupants, who previously researched and identified those spaces as good for business.

“These spaces already had a site selection review, foot traffic, and locals are used to seeing activity in the space,” said entrepreneur Andy LaPointe, the owner of Michigan gourmet food company Traverse Bay Farms, who told CNBC he now operates locations in two strip malls. “But the magic happens when a small business brings, not a cookie-cutter replacement, but something unique, a place to linger and a sense of belonging… So when a national chain leaves a space, it isn’t just a gap, it’s a canvas for a small, local business to create something lasting.”

And that, after all, is what small businesses do best.

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of America hosted youth mental health panel in Atlanta

Boys & Girls Clubs of America hosted youth mental health panel in Atlanta

Boys & Girls Clubs of America, in collaboration with Kohl’s, hosted a mental health panel in Atlanta on Saturday, June 29, to discussion challenges young people face. The event featured actor and musician Jacob Latimore, along with youth from Atlanta-area Boys & Girls Clubs.

This panel was apart of the National Boys & Girls Club Week celebrations and provided a platform for young people to engage in open, authentic conversations about mental health challenges and successes experienced within different communities.

“Everyone has mental health — what Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Kohl’s are doing to foster discussions on mental health within communities is truly admirable,” said Latimore. “Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s goal to create a safe and intimate environment where young people can openly and honestly discuss their feelings about the issues they’re facing represents a paradigm shift in our culture. With everything going on in the world, it’s easy for young people to feel overwhelmed. If they’re feeling anxious, stuck, alone, depressed or just lost, they should know there are people here to help them move forward.”

The mental health panel, which was live-streamed and is available on Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s YouTube channel, gave attendees the opportunity to meet and talk with local teens about the importance of wellness while learning from the critically acclaimed actor of “The Chi” about his own experiences and passion for mental health awareness.

Kohl’s, a longtime partner of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, has played a pivotal role in providing support for trauma-informed training and facilitating open discussions about mental health among teens around the country.

With a focus on positive social and emotional development, Kohl’s is working with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to ensure Club staff have the resources, training and tools they need to help this generation reach their full potential.

“We know it’s important for kids and teens to know they’re not alone in feeling their emotions,” said Kate Endries, National Director of Trauma Informed Practice at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “Together, we can normalize talking about mental health and help young people navigate their emotions in healthy, lasting ways.”

“Mental health is an important issue for us all and a cornerstone of Kohl’s philanthropic work, including through our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America,” said Tara Geiter, Kohl’s director of community relations. “We’re proud to support events like this to help provide more resources to youth nationwide and raise awareness for the challenges kids are facing today.”

The impact of this mental health discussion panel offers a platform for open dialogue, reducing stigma and encouraging kids and teens to share their experiences and learn from mental health professionals.

Ultimately, these discussions foster a culture of empathy and understanding with the goal of empowering our youth with the knowledge and tools to manage their mental well-being effectively.

  • Don't Text—I'm Too Busy Swooning Over These Makeup Looks That Feel So 2024

Don't Text—I'm Too Busy Swooning Over These Makeup Looks That Feel So 2024

Whenever it’s time to talk about the holidays, I can only focus on the amazing makeup looks that I see all over social media and the streets of New York. Sure, the bright lights, festive events, and glamorous outfits are nice, but all I want this season is a guidebook of beauty inspo that I can use for the holidays and beyond. Luckily, the beauty experts in my network can give you and me exactly what we’re looking for. I enlisted fellow editor Katie Berohn and digital creators Tabitha Qassom and Tamara Marbury to create makeup looks worth copying and pasting onto your mood boards for the rest of 2023 and beyond—and they certainly delivered.

They each created a makeup look that taps into the beauty trends we spotted this year, and every product they used is from Sephora at Kohl’s. (No surprise there.) It has an elite curation of all your favorite beauty brands—plus a “clean beauty” category and the ability to filter skincare products by age—so all the best products are at your fingertips. I’ve been taking notes on these looks, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share them with you all. Keep scrolling for the makeup looks you’ll be re-creating in 2024.

I’m probably one of those rare people who wear a red lip almost every single day. But I typically keep the rest of my everyday makeup simple. My advice for wearing a glam look beyond the holidays would be to pick your favorite part of your holiday look, whether that’s a bold lip or glittery eye shadow, and make that the focal point of your everyday looks. If you opt for one focal point and keep the rest of your look more subdued, you can transition any holiday look easily. I would wear this to a holiday party, but I would also wear it to dinner with friends, a family gathering, or a work event. It’s versatile but still perfect for a special occasion. Sephora at Kohl’s has the most-coveted makeup products at truly unbeatable prices.”

I started with the Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eyes palette. After creating a smoky eye by building the deeper matte shades to the outer corners of my eyes, I drew a subtle cat eye using the Too Faced liner. I opted to use two different mascaras for the most dramatic effect. I used Tower 28 mascara on my upper lashes for length and curl. For my lower lashes, I just wanted a bit of length, so I used Ilia Limitless Lash mascara to add subtle definition. I added a dot of Rare Beauty blush to the upper part of my cheeks and blended it in for a flush of color. Then, I used Charlotte Tilbury lipstick to create a bold, showstopping red lip. I love how festive it is while still being versatile.”

“I live in SoCal and am always by the beach, so that sun-kissed look is what I tend to gravitate toward throughout the year. During the holidays, I do like to add an even darker blush for that extra pop! I love that all the products I’m wearing fall under Sephora at Kohl’s clean-beauty list and that so many of the pieces are interchangeable and can be used year-round. Quick tip for all my ladies on the go: When you’re in a pinch and only have either a blush or lip color on you, use it on your lids and lips. Don’t shy away from color on your lips year-round! Have fun with your look regardless of the occasion—you won’t be this young tomorrow!”

“I always start by prepping my skin with a moisturizer or oil. With the cooler weather, my skin has been extra dry, so I’ve been loving Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Cream. It instantly smoothes fine lines while hydrating and plumping my skin. While the moisturizer sets into my skin, I apply the holy grail of eyebrow gel, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze. My brows are pretty unruly, and this is the only gel I’ve found that will keep them in place. It has thousands of five-star reviews for good reason! For the ultimate glow, I go in with Saie’s Glowy Super Gel. They make a universal shade that I love, but when I want to be extra bronze, I use the shade Sunglow. It’s a lightweight luminizer that you can wear alone or mix with foundation or tinted moisturizer. There isn’t one person I’ve told to try this that hasn’t fallen in love.

“Next up is Ilia’s skin tint. This lightweight mineral serum has SPF 40 and is clinically proven to improve the look of dryness and blemishes while giving your skin a dewy finish. I then go in with Tower 28’s Bronzino in West Coast, which I love to add to my cheekbones, jawline, forehead, and nose for an illuminating glow. I follow up with Merit’s cream blush, which provides just a touch of color and a long-lasting glow. Finally, I apply Merit’s lipstick, which gives my lips the ultimate hydration and soft satin finish.”

I like my everyday makeup to look naturally flawless, so I do a lot of neutral or deep tones. This holiday season, I want to elevate that look with metallic colors that complement my skin tone. It’s still giving flawless nude tones that I love for my everyday look but with a bit of sparkle and glam. I would wear this look to a holiday party, gala, or formal event in the new year. Sephora at Kohl’s is my go-to destination for my makeup looks because I can easily filter by product type and get a curated list that has just what I need. It has the best of the best products, so I feel confident when I head to checkout.”

The Huda Beauty Empowered eye shadow palette was made for a glam look. It has so many metallic colors to create a sparkly eye. If you want to create a winged eye, you need the Stila Stay All Day waterproof liquid eyeliner. I drew one of my wings a little too low, and it was easy to immediately wipe off and start again. But once I had drawn it perfectly, it stayed in place. The Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara tops off the dramatic eye. Nars blush in Savage is perfect for this glam look because it has a slight metallic sparkle, so it doubles as a blush and highlighter. Then, because you’ve got sparkle on the eyes and cheeks, you need the Charlotte Tilbury nude lip in Super Fabulous so that your lip doesn’t compete with the eye. Top the nude lip off with the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb in Honey Waffles just to add a little shine.”

  • Amazon Is Now Charging a Fee to Make Some Returns at UPS | Entrepreneur

Amazon Is Now Charging a Fee to Make Some Returns at UPS | Entrepreneur

Amazon built its business on customer service, believing everything would fall into place if the company made shopping easy and convenient. Case in point: Their return policy allows customers to return millions of items they don’t want free of charge.

But that return policy is also wildly expensive. In 2021, a record $761 billion of merchandise was returned to retailers, according to the National Retail Federation.

Now Amazon wants its customers to think twice before sending products back. The e-commerce giant has quietly implemented a new policy, charging customers a $1 fee if they return items to a UPS store instead of a Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh, or Kohl’s closer to their address, according to a report in The Information.

Amazon owns Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh, and Kohl’s partners with the company.

Amazon is also warning consumers about “frequently returned” items sold on their site. They recently introduced a badge that tells shoppers to check the product details and customer reviews on items with higher return rates in their product category.

Related: San Francisco Whole Foods Closes To ‘Ensure Safety’ of Employees

    Amazon cutting costs

The new return fee is the latest in a series of cost-cutting measures implemented by Amazon. Last month, the company announced it would be laying off 9,000 workers, following an earlier round of layoffs last year that saw pink slips handed out to more than 18,000 employees.

While Amazon’s return fees are surprising, they’re not unprecedented. Other retail chains have recently done away with their free online return policy, including Abercrombie & Fitch (which charges $7), American Eagle, Foot Locker, Urban Outfitters, and Zara.

If there is any good news to come out of these new return policies, it’s that they have a positive impact on the environment. Returns cause 16 million metric tons of carbon emissions and up to 5.8 billion pounds of landfill waste in the U.S. each year, according to Optoro.

Less returns mean less waste — even if it may cost you a buck.
