  • Orlando to host matches in 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship

The 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship is coming to Central Florida. On Tuesday, the Greater Orlando Sports Commission announced that Orlando and the Kia Center were selected to host a slew of matches for the global volleyball tournament. “We are proud that Orlando has been selected as a host city for the 2027 Women’s Volleyball World Championship, joining the Honda Center and OCVIBE in Anaheim,” Greater Orlando Sports Commission President and CEO Jason Siegel said in a statement. “We are excited to welcome this world-class event to the Kia Center and finalize the hosting agreement in the months ahead,” Siegel added. “As the world prepares for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, this historic tournament, which is being held in the United States and Canada for the very first time, marks an exciting milestone for the sport.” The Kia Center will host 14 matches over eight days, including the group stage and knockout rounds, Greater Orlando Sports Commission President and CEO Jason Siegel told WESH 2. Matches at the Kia Center will be held from Aug. 20-28, 2027. The championship match is slated for Sept. 5, 2026, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. A total of 32 countries, split into four quadrants, are expected to compete in the tournament. It will be the first time Orlando hosts an international Olympic qualifier. The tournament serves as an Olympic qualifier, which will see three teams qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The United States and Canada are co-hosting the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship. International sporting competitions are not new in Orlando. Central Florida recently hosted six matches across Inter&Co Stadium and Camping World Stadium during last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup. With the FIFA Women’s World Cup slated to return to the United States and Mexico in 2031, Siegel told WESH 2 last April that there are plans to bid Orlando as a host city. • Jonas Brothers are on the way to Orlando for two nights of pop hits

    Credit: Courtesy

The boys are back in town and ready to perform not one, but two nights at the Kia Center as part of their reunion “JONAS20 Greetings From Your Hometown” tour.

This tour marks a huge milestone in their career, as after 20 years of various ups and downs, the brothers reconvened and released a new album, Greetings From Your Hometown. There will be familiar hits, new songs and even solo interludes (bathroom break?) from the three siblings.

Fan demand led to another night being added, so the setlists will likely be even more expansive. Opening the show is The All-American Rejects, but past shows have revealed the brothers’ knack for bringing out nostalgia-riffic surprise guests as well.

    7:30 p.m. Sunday-Monday, Oct. 26-27, Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $94-$464.

  • WWE comes to the Kia Center for ‘Friday Night SmackDown’ taping – Orlando Weekly

WWE runs a Smackdown TV taping in Orlando Credit: Courtesy

There is no denying that WWE is the peak of the pro-wrestling world. A mega-money deal with Netflix and ESPN, sell-out shows around the country, a crop of legit superstars — in particular Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntire, Jacob Fatu, Chelsea Green and Charlotte Flair on the SmackDown brand, heading our way — all of it points to a very well-oiled machine.

Even something that once would have been very divisive, the announcement of an upcoming Wrestlemania happening in Saudi Arabia, only caused a minor hubbub. WWE has deep ties locally, too. Its developmental league NXT is based here, filming now at Full Sail, as well as a “Performance Center” training facility that will soon be replaced by a bigger, more extensive one (also here).

The wrestlers of the Friday Night SmackDown brand, currently airing on the USA Network, will be at the Kia Center for a live television taping and clearly, this is a fed that knows how to put on a show.

    7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $72-$392.

  • In an age of total disclosure, Sleep Token kept it mysterious at the Kia Center – Orlando Weekly

Sleep Token address their flock at the Kia Center Credit: J.D. Casto

We came to the Kia Center, Sleep Token fandom’s house of worship this Wednesday night, not knowing if we belonged. We had of course heard whispers of Sleep Token on TikTok. These masked figures offered more than a concert. Initial plans to simply take in the spectacle and enjoy their viral songs were quickly abandoned. Instead, we were consumed.

There were no IMAG cameras, no Jumbotron glow to mediate the experience. For once, no one was watching a screen. We were watching Sleep Token in their world, and that was the point. The stage seemed visually like an altar that was somewhere between myth and temple ruins. With three towering levels of jagged stone and a central waterfall, it called to mind Legends of the Hidden Temple — if it had been designed for sacrifice instead of children’s games.

And then the lights spoke. They weren’t just fixtures, they were voices, characters, spirits summoned at the right moments. At times, the beams seemed to sing in unison with the band like divine warnings. At others, they bent low, soft and merciful, cradling the masked figures as lead singer Vessel commanded the crowd.

Sleep Token get casual with their devotees Credit: J.D. Casto

The band was faceless, hidden behind masks. No cameras. No banter. No “Hello Orlando!” No forced intimacy. And somehow, that anonymity pulled us closer. With no distractions, we had no choice but to confront the music. To let it pull at us. To worship?

We came to this show curious, not converted. But something about the way Sleep Token stands apart — turning away from overproduced broadcasts, refusing the hollow convenience of the digital spectacle — feels like an echo from another time. Nostalgic, almost. A reminder that music is meant to be lived, not streamed.

  • Benson Boone threw everything but the kitchen sink into acrobatic Orlando show

Benson Boone backflipped into the arms of his Orlando faithful Credit: Grayson Keglovic

If you thought we were exaggerating about the man’s love for backflips in our Benson Boone preshow coverage, we were not. In fact, he did a backflip before he even sang a single note at his sold-out show Tuesday.

Benson Boone did not one, not two, but seven backflips total during his show at the Kia Center. And those were just the backflips that we counted — there were several other moments where the American singer-songwriter left the surly bonds of Earth.

When he flew over the crowd on a giant chandelier, for instance. As mesmerizing as the stunt was, Boone’s addiction to adrenaline kicks is borderline concerning. The chandelier was suspended above attendees on the floor and in the 100 sections, and we couldn’t help but notice how little support Boone seemed to have while in the air. He tightly gripped a rope on the base of the floating prop, but that was it.

Benson Boone didn’t just flip but also flew in Orlando Credit: Grayson Keglovic

Boone’s “American Hearts” tour has a heavy theme of pushing boundaries to “live life on the edge,” and we were certainly on the edge of our seats praying that the 23-year-old’s knees wouldn’t give out upon landing. Yes, the flips were the only instances where Boone was upside-down, but he was continuously jumping off the sets and vaulting over instruments. It was astonishing to see how easily Boone leaped atop his Yamaha piano.

Sure, we’ve all seen the internet discourse: Boone is either fervently loved or unbelievably hated. No matter which side your personal coin falls, it’s undeniable that the artist has talent. His vocal capabilities were surreal. Not to mention, Boone can land a trick and then immediately begin singing — all in the same breath.

Boone is very self-aware when it comes to what people in the music press think of him. He took the opportunity to repeatedly poke fun at his meme-worthy personality, making jokes about his TikTok hate-train and the demographic of his listeners.

There was an almost nine-minute monologue dedicated to the fact that many of the audience members weren’t even old enough to get their driver’s licenses. Part of the same monologue included a question posed to the audience: “Have you ever been in love?” One concertgoer shouted that the audience was too young to be in love, so Boone immediately shifted the question to “Have you ever had a crush?” He continued to go on about how one of his songs could be relatable to the audience if they have a crush on their elementary school classmate.

Other notable moments from the show included a hurricane of heart-shaped confetti, colored red, white and blue, and a lone T-shirt shot into the audience by one of Boone’s dear friends, McLean. The T-shirt, snatched by a lucky fan, had the name of the night’s surprise cover to be performed by Boone.

The Orlando show’s selected cover was “All of Me,” by John Legend. Now that’s showmanship.

  • Benson Boone backflips into Orlando for sold-out arena show

    Credit: by David Roemer

Who is Benson Boone, and why does that name ring a bell?

Well, he’s the guy from the internet who always does at least one backflip while belting out pop hits like “Mystical Magical.” If you’re still befuddled, we can break it down further: The 23-year-old singer-songwriter has a 1970s pornstache and is the voice behind the Billboard Hot 100 anthem “Beautiful Things.” In 2021, he made a brief appearance on American Idol, but withdrew from the competition after making the top 24 contestants.

Around the time of his Idol stint, Boone began garnering big-time attention from TikTok. He soon caught the eye of Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds, who signed Boone to his first label. In 2025, Boone received his first Grammy nom — for “Best New Artist” — and even performed on the show.

Boone can be a polarizing pop figure; middle-aged women seem to love him, while the younger generation either despises him or just can’t get enough. The haters criticize the Washington-born singer with the dreaded slur of “trying too hard” or call him a “wannabe Harry Styles.” On the (back)flipside, his fans find Boone absolutely charming, including this writer’s own mother. And his hits are undeniably hooky. (Editor’s note: We saw Alaska 5000 cover “Beautiful Things” live, and it hit!)

You can decide for yourself whether Benson Boone is your mixed bag of tricks when he arrives in the City Beautiful this week. Or maybe not, because this show is thoroughly sold out.

    8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., 800-745-3000, kiacenter.com, SOLD OUT.

  • Jonas Brothers announce second Orlando tour date

    Credit: Photo via Jonas Brothers/Facebook

After plenty of boy-band-fan demand and an already sold-out Orlando concert date, the Jonas Brothers have announced a second show at the Kia Center this October.

The Disney Channel-born musical trio of bros will now perform at the Kia Center on both Oct. 26 and 27 as part of their “JONAS20 Greetings From Your Hometown” tour.

The now two-night run will be the brothers’ latest visit to Orlando since the “Five Albums. One Night” tour that stopped in town back in October 2023.

The Jonas Brothers described this 20-year-in-the-making performance as their favorite tour so far, on a recent Instagram post

And they’ve certainly made that clear, as they’ve featured plenty of big-name and fellow Disney Channel-launched special guests, among them Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony and the Plain White T’s,  at earlier dates so far on the tour. The tour’s setlist has comprised music from each of the members’ later professional careers, with plenty of heartthrob nostalgic sounds and sights sprinkled in.

The All American Rejects open the show.

If you missed the chance to snag tickets to the now sold-out Orlando show on Oct. 26, tickets for the new show on Oct. 27 are on sale this week. Artist presale kicked off Wednesday, and general public sale will start Friday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m.

The Jonas Brothers will also play in Tampa on Wednesday, Oct. 22, and in Sunrise on Friday, Oct. 24.

  • Is it still Brat Summer? Find out at Charli XCX’s Orlando arena show

Charli XCX comes to town this weekend

Charli XCX has entranced fans of hyper-pop into fervent devotion for years, but leveled up exponentially with this year’s Brat.

With that album, Charli XCX unleashed perhaps one of the best pop albums and seasonal takeovers of all time. Brat was a loaded crossover album seamlessly blending pop and experimental electronic music, and packed with certified club anthems reflecting on themes of projection (“Sympathy Is a Knife”), self-sabotage (“I Might Say Something Stupid”), bearing children (“I Think About It All the Time”), and all the seriousness and levity that is driving to the airport (“Apple”).

Hailed as “a cultural reset” Brat and the ensuing “brat girl summer” (see: sweat, sex, white tanks, “It girls,” controversy, dancing all night to lyrics you’d confess to a therapist) immediately took on a life beyond mere listening, spawning memes, multiple Boiler Room sets, dance parties, the “Apple” TikTok dance, a website dedicated to brat green (#8ACE00), an infatuated Kyle MacLachlan, a presidential campaign theme, etc. Charli XCX brings her PARTYGIRL 365 disposition to Orlando Sunday with co-headliner Troye Sivan.

    7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, Kia Center, $45.50-$125.

Deftones to play an arena show in Orlando next year

Deftones have announced a 2025 North American tour — and that faint roar you hear is the distance is nü-metal fans, erstwhile mall-goths and Gen-Z hipsters all collectively losing their minds.

The multi-platinum Grammy-winning Californian band kick off their tour, their first extended outing in three years, in February of next year in Portland. There are only two Florida stops in late March: Orlando, and Sunrise the next night.

Expect some new tunes making their way into the setlist as the band recently wrapped recording their next album.

Along for the tour are the Mars Volta and Fleshwater.

Deftones play the Kia Center on Thursday, March 20, 2025. Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 20, through Ticketmaster.

Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, a San Francisco-based company, will move into the Westcourt entertainment district slated to open in downtown Orlando early 2027, Kimpton announced in a press release this week.

The hotel will be part of Westcourt, the $500 million sports and entertainment district city officials approved in April after discussing since 2011. At that time, plans for the project mentioned it would include a 260-room hotel but did not specify which hotel company would take the spot.

Located on the 8.5-acre site north of the Kia Center, the Westcourt district will feature residential units, a live event venue, office space, dining and entertainment spots. The Kimpton hotel will be 11 stories and feature a full-service restaurant and bar, café, pool bar and pool lounge.

The district is being developed by JMA Ventures, also based in San Francisco; the Machete Group, which helped develop the Kia Center; and Orlando Magic owners the DeVos family.

Todd Chapman, a partner and CEO at JMA Ventures, said he looked forward to collaborating with Kimpton. The commercial real estate company has partnered with the hotel brand on one other project, the Kimpton Sawyer in Sacramento, he said.

“Their renowned commitment to excellence and innovative approach to the guest experience make them the perfect partner for enhancing the atmosphere we envision at Westcourt, setting a new standard of hospitality in downtown Orlando,” Chapman said in the release.

Missy Elliott brings her first headlining tour to Orlandoi

R&B icon Missy Elliott will be in Orlando for her first-ever headlining tour on Tuesday at the Kia Center. Elliott’s “Out of This World: The Experience Tour” brings out all of her unforgettable earworm beats and rhymes, augmented by the support of musical friends and creative family Ciara, Busta Rhymes and Timbaland.

In 2001, Elliott made her name with the seminal album Miss E … So Addictive, featuring singles like “Get Ur Freak On” and “One Minute Man.” “Get Ur Freak On” won multiple awards, including a Grammy and ASCAP awards for Rhythm and Soul and Pop Music.

She repeated the Grammy feat in 2003 with her single “Scream a.k.a. Itchin’.” She appeared in the 2015 Super Bowl with Katy Perry, which landed her the Innovator Award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019, and last year Elliot became the first woman rap artist to enter the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jhené Aiko brings the “Magic Hour” to Orlando

Jhené Aiko hits Orlando this Saturday on her “Magic Hour” tour with openers Coi Leray, Tink, Umi and Kiana Lede, and this femme-forward show is bound to be a trip.

Aiko originally planned the Magic Hour trek in 2020 after releasing her album Chilomb, but the COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on that.

In the meantime Aiko was far from idle, even releasing an R&B album for babies to sleep to, Sleep Soul, after giving birth to her second child in 2022. Aside from some festival appearances, this is Aiko’s first headlining tour in more than four years.

Aiko started out as a member of R&B outfit B2K in 2002, but now she makes her own brand of soul music suffused with elements of spirituality, netting her six Grammy nominations. The spiritual artist taps into her inner self live with elements of stagecraft that are symbolic and energy-related, including lights representing a colorful aura and a giant white flower opening up during the show.

    6 p.m. Saturday, July 6, Kia Center, $95-$345.

    Blink-182 play Orlando this week

Pop-punk icons Blink-182 and emo band Pierce the Veil may very well make fans want to “take off their pants and jacket,” and who would blame them with this hot lineup?

After co-vocalist and guitarist Tom DeLonge rejoined in Blink-182 in 2022 — after a seven-year absence — the band released a track, “Edging,” to mark the occasion. This tour serves as further notice of the trio being back together, revisiting hits like “I Miss You” and “All The Small Things” and even releasing new music — like recent album One More Time.

With openers jxdn and Pierce the Veil, the audience is sure to have nostalgic flashbacks of, say, skating around the neighborhood listening to Collide With the Sky … or other emo anthems to soothe the bruises from falling off said board.

Jennifer Lopez cancels U.S. tour, including summer Orlando show

Jennifer Lopez has canceled the entirety of her North American tour, including an Orlando show set for late June.

Lopez announced on Friday that she has put the kibosh on her U.S. tour, which was set to kick off here in Orlando with a show at the Kia Center on June 26.

Live Nation first broke the news, saying that J.Lo was putting the tour on hold to “spend time with family and friends.” Lopez herself posted on her official site: “I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary.”

Back in March, Lopez struck six dates from her initial summer tour itinerary — including a Tampa show — amidst rumblings of sluggish ticket sales, according to Variety.

Refunds will be dispensed at point of purchase.

Hello, we’ve got to let you know that Lionel Richie plays Orlando’s Kia Center this week

This night is about this Lionel Richie’s music, not his cologne

Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind and Fire are out on yet another leg of their popular “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour, and they’re headed to Orlando this week.

The co-headliners are out on the road together until mid-June, and the only other chance to see them in Florida was Jacksonville (booo!) a couple of days ago.

We peeped a recent setlist on Uproxx and Richie is going heavy on the hits, playing everything from “Say You Say Me” to “All Night Long” and from a solo “We Are the World” to the Commodores’ “Easy.”

Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind and Fire play the Kia Center on Friday, May 31. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster.

While Melanie Martinez’s whims and presentation sometimes make me burst into laughter, you gotta give big credit to anyone trying to tilt the pop landscape to the left. The fact that Martinez is both mainstream-huge and fucking weird as shit makes her a special kind of cool. Her sound is modern and accessible, but everything behind it is arty to the point of absurdity.

This bill is loaded with opening acts worth seeing on their own. With a melodic instinct that rivals Alvvays, Chicago’s Beach Bunny are seriously one of today’s best indie-rock bands. Rounding out the lineup are buzzing Montreal indie-pop band Men I Trust and new L.A. alt-pop artist Sofia Isella.

Do-or-Die: Magic on the brink of elimination with must-win Game 6

It’s a do-or-die moment for the Orlando Magic. After dropping Game 5 in Cleveland on Tuesday, the Magic now face a must-win Game 6 against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Kia Center on Friday night. It’s a situation much of this roster has never experienced before – playing in such a high stakes environment – however, it’s one they feel comfortable in. “It’s the first time for a lot of us but I don’t think it’s very surprising,” said Magic forward Paolo Banchero. “We have guys that are winners, have winning in their DNA.”I think if you look at it as being overwhelming, you’re not ready for it. This is what we worked for and we’re excited to go out and compete.”Both sides have protected home court throughout the series, and Tuesday’s game was the first time a game had been decided by single digits. The Magic fell behind at the start of the first quarter, but rallied late, falling by just a single point.Even with the loss, it’s performances like that which make this group confident in their ability to handle a high-pressure situation.”Take last game, that was high stakes and high pressure and we showed up,” said Jonathan Isaac. “I don’t think this is any different . We’ve shown that we can compete.”The Magic will tip off tonight at 7 p.m. Should they win, they will force a Game 7 on Sunday afternoon. Should they lose, their season will be over.

Aerosmith have added an Orlando date to their farewell tour

Veteran rockers Aerosmith have expanded their “Peace Out” farewell tour, adding a handful of shows that include a brand-new date in Orlando next year.

The band’s “Peace Out” jaunt — with blues-rockers the Black Crowes along for the ride as touring openers — kicks off in Pittsburgh this fall. “Peace Out” celebrates 50 years’ worth of Aerosmith music, with a setlist pulling  from all eras of the band’s discography.

Originally kicking off last year, the “Peace Out” run was postponed after a few shows, when singer Steven Tyler suffered a vocal injury. This week’s announcement sees all dates rescheduled, and even a couple of new shows added. The tour includes only one other Florida date, on Valentine’s Day 2025.

Aerosmith and the Black Crowes play the Kia Center on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025. Tickets go on sale Friday, April 12, through Ticketmaster.
