  • Beginning The Offseason – Combine To Free Agency – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

With the combine starting this week the Eagles will be getting another look at future prospects and players ahead of the 2026 NFL draft.

And while the draft doesn’t begin until April 23rd. The Eagles still have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks with over 20 free agents set to hit the market with less than two weeks until the legal tampering period(march 9th) and free agency(march 11th) open

    2026 Free Agents

Below is a list of the 20 players the Eagles will need to make a decision on in the coming weeks:

    • TE Dallas Goedert
    • S Reed Blankenship
    • ED Jaelan Phillips
    • ED Azeez Ojulari
    • WR Jahan Dotson
    • DL Brandon Graham
    • P Braden Mann
    • ED Joshua Uche
    • CB Adoree Jackson
    • TE Kylen Granson
    • G Matt Pryor
    • RB A.J. Dillon
    • OT Fred Johnson
    • LB Nakobe Dean
    • ED Ogbonnia Okronkwo
    • G Brett Toth
    • S Marcus Epps
    • QB Sam Howell
    • TE Grant Calcaterra
    • FB Ben VanSumeren

There’s a few positions that stand out the most.  Including the Tight End room with 3 of the main rostered tight ends set to hit the open market. leaving E.J. Jenkins, Cameron Latu and Jaheim Bell as the only TE signed through the 2026 season.

The other major position of concern is Safety. Losing a defensive captain in Blankenship could be a heavy blow to the Eagles strong defensive unit. With Mukuba returning from a fractured ankle, and Sydney Brown having not taking a leap when given playing opportunity leaves the Eagles secondary thinner than it was last season.

There might be a handful of moves to come during the offseason, to nobodies surprise.

    Approaching The Draft

The Eagles are always an active team during the offseason. After winning the Super Bowl in 2025, the Eagles made a total of 6 trades before and during the draft. The first 2 being moves that acquired draft capital moving C.J. Gardner-Johnson as well as Kenny Pickett. The next 4 took place during the draft that included moving up to acquire Jihaad Campbell, as well as trading up and back in the draft. Securing players like Ty Robinson and Mac McWilliams.

Similarly, the Eagles made two trades prior to the 2024 NFL draft, acquiring Kenny Pickett and moving on from Haason Reddick. They went on to make an additional EIGHT trades during the draft that helped them acquire players like Cooper DeJean and multiple trade backs that helped re-stock future drafts while acquiring Jalyx Hunt, Will Shipley and more.

With a few weeks to go before players are able to make agreements with other teams. Who do you think the Eagles will re-sign before the legal tampering period begins?

With 3 weeks to go in the regular season, playoff spots are starting to be snatched up. With the Broncos, Seahawks and Rams being the first teams to clinch a playoff spot, many more will soon follow.

Including the Eagles, whose magic number jumped from 3 all the way to 1 on Sunday following a Raiders blowout and a Cowboys season that’s nearly over, courtesy of “Nine” and the Minnesota Vikings.

And the Eagles first opportunity to punch their ticket into the postseason comes a day earlier this week. With a Saturday night game against the Washington Commanders

    The Last Match

January 26th 2025 was the last time these teams saw each other. In an NFC Championship Game division matchup. To end a conversation:

What would happen if Jalen Hurts played all 4 quarters of the Week 16 loss?

A game that saw the Eagles take a quick 14-0 lead that saw Hurts exit due to a concussion just 5 minutes into the game. The final score ended 36-33 after the Eagles defense couldn’t get a stop, and the offense led by Kenny Pickett could barely pick up a first down.

To open the NFC championship game, the Commanders led an 18 play, 54 yard drive that included two 4th down conversions and finished with 3 points. The Eagles answer to that drive? This Saquon Barkley60 yard TD on the Eagles opening play of the game.

What followed was an absolute rout. The Eagles saw a 12 point lead at halftime, before they took things personally and finished the game with a 21 point 4th quarter after forcing two turnovers by the Commanders.

Now, things will look a little different.

    Saturday Night

Jayden Daniels has since been shut down for the season. With multiple injuries sidelining him for weeks at a time. Instead, the Eagles will play against their former backup QB Marcus Mariota who has lead his current team to a 1-3 record.

Having been eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago, the Commanders will have nothing to play for but draft position, and attempting to foil the Eagles playoff/seeding hopes.

However with a laundry list of injuries ranging from Laremy Tunsil, and Colson Yankoff listed Out for this week. With names like Trey Amos, Luke McCaffrey, Zach Ertz, Marshon Lattimore and Dorance Armstrong already on injured reserve, the Commanders will be thin at numerous positions. Hoping the Eagles can take advantage of a depleted team that thought they could repeat a 12-5 Cinderella run from only a year ago.

The 37-year-old Graham collected two sacks against the Raiders playing inside the defensive line. He’s shaken off the retirement rust, but the position switch has also forced him to play faster.

  • Second Chances After Leaving the Nest – Philadelphia Sports Nation

When Kenny Pickett arrived in Philadelphia in the summer of 2024 looking for a fresh start — he got the opportunity to backup Jalen Hurts. The Eagles had acquired him through a trade with the Steelers. His place as Pittsburgh’s Franchise Quarterback had become fluid with the arrival of veteran Russell Wilson — and so he requested the opportunity to play elsewhere.

Last season — Pickett played in five games for the World Championship Eagles and even started in a win against Dallas.

Photo Courtesy of Eagles Nation on X.

When it comes to allowing quarterbacks to thrive elsewhere — the Eagles have a history with that. Randall Cunningham’s last game in Philadelphia was in relief of an injured Rodney Peete in the 1996 Divisional Playoffs against the Cowboys. In the week leading up to the game — Cunningham missed time with the team due to the birth of his son. Cunningham would retire after the season but returned to football in 1997 and with the Minnesota Vikings in 1998 came one field goal away from the Super Bowl.

Sonny Jurgenson was drafted by the Eagles in 1957. When Norm Van Brocklin retired after winning the Championship in 1960, Jurgensen became the starter. After a season as an NFL passing leader and record setter with 3,723 yards in 1961 — on April 1st, 1964 — the Eagles traded him to the Washington Redskins in return for Norm Snead and defensive back Claude Crabb.

No team knows the value of a great backup quarterback better than the Eagles (just ask Nick Foles.) But since the Eagles have McKee — they looked to trade Kenny Pickett. Novacare is really high on Tanner McKee, and the Eagles leveraged Pickett for capital in return last summer.

Now Pickett returns to Philadelphia after being traded from Cleveland to Las Vegas in August. He’ll start against Philadelphia for the Raiders after an injury to Geno Smith. He’ll always be a champion in Philadelphia. But for one day — until 4:00 P.M. — we’ll have to root against him.

    Just for one day.

  • Eagles-Raiders Week 15 injury report, with analysis

    [ad_1]

The Philadelphia Eagles lost their third straight game on Monday night to the Chargers, but at least they escaped L.A. without any new significant injuries. Their Week 15 opponent, the Las Vegas Raiders, are expected to be without starting quarterback Geno Smith.

Here’s the Eagles-Raiders injury report, with analysis.

    051020EaglesLogo2020
Player  Injury  Wed*  Thurs Fri  Status
RT Lane Johnson  Foot  DNP DNP DNP Out
iDL Jalen Carter  Shoulders  DNP DNP DNP Out
LG Landon Dickerson Calf Limited DNP (calf/rest) Full –
LB Zack Baun  Hand  Full  Full   Full  –
LS Charley Hughlett  Abdomen  Full  Full   Full  –
OT Fred Johnson  Ankle  –  Limited   Full  –
OT Cameron Williams  Shoulder  –  Full   Full  Questionable

    Wednesday notes (Walkthrough, estimation only):

    • There is some optimism that Lane will play in this game, but his DNP is not a great start to the week.

    • Carter was considered “week-to-week” after the procedure on his shoulders. He could miss another game. We’ll see.

    • Dickerson left Monday night’s game with his calf injury, but returned to the field later.

    Thursday notes

    • Dickerson went from limited on Wednesday to a non-participant on Thursday, though it certainly makes sense to get him some rest.

    • Fred Johnson was added to the report today, which is not ideal with Lane Johnson already hurt. Johnson’s addition to the injury report perhaps explains why the Eagles opened the 21-day practice window for Cameron Williams on Thursday.

    Friday notes

    • Lane Johnson and Jalen Carter are both out, as expected.

    • Fred Johnson is good to go.

Notable players on IR, PUP, suspension, etc.

S Andrew Mukuba (IR, eligible to come off of IR after Week 16): Mukuba has had an up and down rookie season, but was beginning to earn the trust of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. On the season, Mukuba has 46 tackles and 2 INTs.

WR Johnny Wilson (IR, knee/ankle, out for the season): Wilson is a massive receiver at 6’6, 228 who carved out a dirty work role as a physical blocker his rookie season in 2024, though sometimes he was a little too aggressive, as he committed four penalties (3 holding, 1 OPI). He wasn’t much of a threat as a receiver, catching only 5 passes for 38 yards and a TD. He played a little over 400 snaps, and actually started four games.

EDGE Ogbo Okoronkwo (IR, triceps, eligible to come off of IR at any time, season could be over): Okoronkwo was signed to provide edge depth. He played in just one game (4 snaps) before tearing his triceps.

EDGE Azeez Ojulari (IR, triceps, eligible to come off of IR at any time): Ojulari was the presumed third EDGE defender in the pecking order when he signed with the Eagles as a free agent, but he is now no better than the EDGE7.

FB Ben VanSumeren (IR, knee, out for the season): VanSumeren was poised to take on a bigger role in the Eagles’ offense in 2025 as a full-time fullback, but he tore his patellar tendon on the opening kickoff of the season. His season is over.

iOL Willie Lampkin (IR, season over): Lampkin is an extreme oddity, in that he is a 5’11 offensive lineman who only weighs 290 pounds. He looks like a player you’d create in Madden just for fun. However, coming out of North Carolina he received glowing reviews for his play on the field, and he played well in the preseason after signing with the Rams as an undrafted rookie free agent. The Rams waived Lampkin with an injury designation. The Eagles then claimed him and placed him on their IR.

The Eagles activated Lampkin’s 21-day practice window, which expired. He won’t play this season.

OT Myles Hinton (IR, Eagles opened up 21-day practice window on 11/19): Hinton is a sixth-round rookie who was up and down in training camp. The Eagles placed him on IR with a back injury, and he has not been on the active roster all season.

The Eagles activated Hinton’s 21-day practice window, which expired. He won’t play this season.

OT Cameron Williams (IR, eligible to come off of IR at any time): Williams struggled in training camp, and landed on IR. This is effectively a redshirt season for him. Williams did have his 21-day practice window activated in Thursday, but he remains unlikely to play this season.

RB Raheem Mostert  Knee  –  DNP  Limited  –

    Wednesday notes

    • Several reports have emerged that Geno Smith will not play in this game. Smith injured his right shoulder in the third quarter of the Raiders’ loss to the Broncos on Sunday. He also suffered a cut on his right hand.

Former Eagle Kenny Pickett filled in and played well, completing 8 of 11 passes for 97 yards and a TD against a good Broncos defense.

Smith has had a horrendous season. He leads the NFL with 14 INTs, and his total EPA of -70.73 is ranked 70th in the NFL, only ahead of Titans rookie Cam Ward. The Eagles might very well rather face Smith.

    • Last week, Crosby was on the Raiders’ injury report with a knee injury. He was limited on Wednesday, and he did not practice on Thursday or Friday. He played all 74 snaps against the Broncos, and had 4 tackles and a sack. He has 9 sacks and 2 forced fumbles on the season, and is pretty clearly the Raiders’ best player. My bet is that he’ll play on Sunday, but we’ll keep an eye out for reporting on him throughout the week.

    • Miller is the starting LT. He is on IR, but he returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since Week 4. He was a first-round pick in 2018, and is Vegas’ best offensive lineman, by far. He suffered a high ankle sprain and a hairline fracture Week 4 against the Bears. Stone Forsythe filled in, and has started the last nine games for the Raiders.

    • Chinn is second on the team with 104 tackles. Like Crosby, he also played all 74 snaps against the Broncos.

    Thursday notes:

    • With the exception of Geno Smith, all of the Raiders players who did not participate in practice on Wednesday were limited on Thursday. That’s a positive development for them.

    • Kolton Miller was still limited. The guess here is that he won’t play, especially since the Raiders have nothing to play for.

    Friday notes

    • Smith is officially out. Pickett will start.

    • Miller is officially out as well.

Notable players on IR, PUP, suspension, etc.

LT Kolton Miller (IR, 21-day practice window opened on Wednesday): As noted above.

RG Jackson Powers-Johnson (IR, eligible to come off of IR at any time): Powers-Johnson was the Raiders’ starting RG to begin the season. He was the Raiders’ second-round pick in 2024. He suffered an ankle injury against the Broncos Week 10, and his season is likely over. The Raiders’ current starter at RG is Caleb Rogers, a third-round rookie.

CB Kyu Blu-Kelly (will soon be on IR, season over): Blu-Kelly is a starting corner. He had 40 tackles and 3 INTs before suffering a ruptured patellar tendon against the Broncos Week 14. His season is over. The Raiders’ other regular starting corner is Eric Stokes. Third-round rookie Darien Porter filled in for Blu-Kelly after he went down.

  • Browns trade QB Kenny Pickett to the Raiders, where he’ll back up Geno Smith

    [ad_1]

Kenny Pickett is on the move again.

The Browns traded Pickett to Las Vegas on Monday night for a fifth-round draft pick in 2026, giving the Raiders a proven backup quarterback and clearing the way for two rookies to back up Joe Flacco in Cleveland.

It’s the third time in less than 18 months that Pickett has been traded. He was the 20th overall pick by Pittsburgh in the 2022 draft and started 24 games in two seasons for the Steelers before being dealt to Philadelphia in 2024.

Pickett will back up Geno Smith in Las Vegas after Aidan O’Connell broke his right wrist in Saturday’s preseason game at Arizona.

The Eagles won the Super Bowl last season, when Pickett was the backup to Jalen Hurts. He was traded to Cleveland in March for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick.

Cleveland signed Flacco one month later and drafted Dillon Gabriel in the third round and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth.

Pickett suffered a hamstring injury on July 26 and didn’t play in the preseason. Coach Kevin Stefanski had said he expected Pickett to be available for Cleveland’s Sept. 7 opener against Cincinnati.

Stefanski did not name a backup last week when Flacco was named the Week 1 starter, but Gabriel would likely fill that role if the Browns don’t sign another QB. Cleveland released Tyler Huntley on Sunday, but he could be an option if the Browns want a veteran with starting experience.

O’Connell will miss six to eight weeks for Las Vegas, and coach Pete Carroll made it clear that the Raiders would pursue another quarterback because he said rookie Cam Miller wasn’t ready to be the No. 2.

“I want somebody who’s played,” Carroll said Sunday. “That’s what’s important, a guy that’s had game experience is really huge to me. We have Cam and Cam hasn’t played in the league much, so we’re looking for an experienced player that could help us.”

Pickett has started 25 games in three seasons and is 15-10. He has completed 62.6% of his passes for 4,765 yards with 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

O’Connell started 17 games over the past two seasons, including seven games in 2024. He threw for 1,612 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions last year.

The Raiders — who open at New England on Sept. 7 — signed Smith in the offseason, bumping O’Connell to the backup role.

  • Report: Browns Trade QB Kenny Pickett to the Raiders

    [ad_1]

    Source: Perry Knotts / Getty

The Cleveland Browns have traded quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move comes just months after Cleveland signed the former Pittsburgh Steelers starter in free agency.

After injuring his hamstring, Pickett never took the field in a Browns uniform during the preseason. Now the team can evaluate rookie Shedeur Sanders and former Oklahoma standout Dillon Gabriel instead. With Pickett out of the picture, Cleveland’s quarterback depth chart behind Week 1 starter Joe Flacco will continue to take shape.

The Browns open the 2025 NFL season against the Cincinnati Bengals, with Gabriel expected to handle backup duties in Week 1. Shedeur Sanders will likely open the season as QB 3.

  • Will The Eagles Make Another Move In August? – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

The Eagles are one of the most active organizations when it comes to making trades.

Just one month after winning Super Bowl LIX the Eagles made two trades.

The first move swapped C.J Gardner-Johnson with Kenyon Green, which also saw the Eagles move up from the 6th round to the 5th round in 2026. However, last week both players were injured and will most likely miss the start of the regular season.

The other trade (on the same day) was a swap of Quarterbacks. The Eagles acquired pick 164, (used in the trade up to acquire Jihaad Campbell) and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The price? Super Bowl champion QB Kenny Pickett.

With a handful of trades up and down throughout the 2025 Draft. The Eagles spent the rest of the spring focused elsewhere.

Then in June. The Eagles fixed one of their prior free agent errors by sending Bryce Huff to the 49ers for a 2026 conditional 5th round pick. Bringing their total picks in the 2026 draft to 10, with an expectation to receive an additional 3 comp picks.

    Making Moves In August

The most recent move to add to the Eagles August history is the trade for CB Jakorian Bennett. Adding to the CB2 camp competition between Mac McWilliams, Kelee Ringo and Adoree Jackson.

A simple player for player swap saw the Eagles add to the secondary, and in return the Raiders added Thomas Booker to their defensive line.

Below we’ll look at the Eagles history in August, with a whopping 9 trades during the final month of the offseason in the Nick Sirianni era.

    2024

    • 8/22 PHI traded 2025 3rd and two 2025 7ths to WAS for WR Jahan Dotson and a 2025 5th

    2023

    • 8/29 PHI traded a 2025 6th to DEN for TE Albert Okwuegbunam and a 2025 7th

    2022

    • 8/15 PHI traded WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside to SEA for S Ugo Amadi
    • 8/24 PHI traded S Ugo Amadi and a 2024 7th to TEN for a 2024 6th
    • 8/30 PHI traded a 2023 5th and two 2024 6ths to NOLA for S C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2025 7th
    • 8/31 PHI traded WR Jalen Reagor to MIN for a 2023 7th and a 2025 4th

    2021

    • 8/27 PHI traded a 2022 6th to JAX for QB Gardner Minshew
    • 8/30 PHI traded OL Matt Pryor and a 2022 7th to IND for a 2022 6th

With a multitude of trade acquisitions for both starters and depth pieces happening in the month of August. Will the Eagles stay with their current roster? Or is another trade brewing with the 53 man roster deadline less than two weeks away on August 26th?

  • Why Tanner McKee Should Be QB2 for the Eagles – Philadelphia Sports Nation

Why Tanner McKee Should Be QB2 for the Eagles – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

The Eagles have had two exciting preseason wins so far. This was largely due to the play of second-year quarterback Tanner McKee, who has looked stellar so far through training camp and the preseason games.
Nick Sirianni is standing firm on Kenny Pickett being QB2, but Tanner McKee has proven it should be him.

McKee looks much better as a passer than Pickett does.

In his most recent outing against the Patriots, McKee threw 19 passes and completed 15 for 140 yards.

It is evident when you watch the games that Kenny Pickett isn’t any good. Against the Patriots, he had 11 completions for 67 yards. He’s already had two full seasons as a starter under his belt, and as Steelers fans will tell you, he was awful out there.

He is a first-round pick who has proven he isn’t a good QB in the league, but McKee, on the other hand, is a 6th round pick who hasn’t gotten a chance to prove himself.

Even if McKee isn’t that good, he’s a better option than Pickett.

Tanner McKee looks like a solid passer when he’s on the field, especially since he’s throwing to wide receivers who probably won’t be on the roster. He is someone who could come in and win a few games if Jalen Hurts goes down, which he usually does at some point during the season.

There were even people who thought McKee should have been QB2 last season, ahead of Marcus Mariota. McKee finished his college career at Stanford with 5336 passing yards and 28 touchdowns in two seasons as a starter. He was definitely a solid passer in college, and that could translate to the NFL.

Jalen Hurts has missed games during every season since he’s been a starter. If he goes down this season, the Eagles cannot put Kenny Pickett out there.
Philadelphia will have a much better chance to win if they put Tanner Mckee in the game, which is why he should be QB2.

  • Eagles 2024 training camp preview: Quarterback

Eagles 2024 training camp preview: Quarterback

    [ad_1]

Over the next three or so weeks (basically whenever there isn’t other news to cover), we’ll take a look at every player on the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster, and how they fit with the team heading into training camp. As always, we’ll start with the quarterback factory.

    QB1  QB2  QB3  QB4
Jalen Hurts  Kenny Pickett  Tanner McKee  Will Grier

    Jalen Hurts

The perception of Jalen Hurts this time two years ago — after his first full season as a starter in 2021 — was that he was an intelligent, hard-working quarterback with leadership qualities who could make plays with his legs, but had serious flaws as a passer, most notably inaccuracy as well as a lack of refinement within the pocket.

During the 2022 offseason, the team had interest in trading for Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson, neither of whom wanted to play in Philly (thankfully for the Eagles’ sake), so nothing materialized. Hurts was then essentially given a one-year tryout to convince the team that they should move forward with him as their quarterback.

    2022 training camp: Pressure ON.

In 2022, Hurts made drastic improvements, as he was rightfully the MVP runner-up to Patrick Mahomes, with the Eagles going 14-1 (plus 2-1 in the playoffs) in games he started. Including the playoffs, he threw 25 TDs vs. 6 INTs as a passer, and he rushed for 903 yards and 18 TDs, cementing his status as a star player and the face of the franchise.

He was rewarded with a five-year contract worth $255 million. By the time 2023 training camp had begun, he was considered the unquestioned leader of the team, with extreme job security.

    2023 training camp: Pressure OFF.

In 2023, Hurts took a step backwards. As you’re all aware, the Eagles started out 10-1, with six of those wins coming against teams that would eventually make the playoffs. Hurts was squarely in the conversation for league MVP at the time, even though novice fans could pretty easily see that he and the team as a whole were not playing nearly as well as the 2022 team that often dominated opponents. From December on, the Eagles abruptly went from a Super Bowl favorite with at least a two-game lead over every other team in the league to one of the worst teams in the NFL.

Hurts was part of the problem, as he did not play well down the stretch, and his leadership skills — again, always thought to be the biggest checkmark in his favor — came into question. How effectively will he pick up Kellen Moore’s scheme? How is he interacting with teammates? Is he making quick reads and getting the ball out instead of looking to extend plays at the first sign of pressure? Those questions — and plenty of others — will be under the microscope this summer.

2024 training camp: Pressure back ON.

    Kenny Pickett

The Eagles made a surprise move during free agency when they dealt for Pickett, who was a Steelers first-round pick (20th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. The trade compensation was as follows:

    Eagles get:  Steelers get:
QB Kenny Pickett  3rd round pick (98th overall) in 2024
    4th round pick (120th overall) in 2024)  7th round pick in 2025
      7th round pick in 2025

Using the draft value chart, the swap of the 98th overall pick and the 120th overall pick is the equivalent of a fourth-round pick.

The Eagles did a lot of homework on Pickett leading up to the 2022 draft, as they were not yet sold on Hurts as the franchise quarterback at the time. Pickett started 12 games both as a rookie in 2022 and then again in 2023, with a 7-5 record in each season. His passing stats:

Kenny Pickett  Comp-Att (Comp %)  Yards (YPA)  TD-INT  Rating
    2022  245-389 (63.0%)  2404 (6.2)  7-9  76.7
    2023  201-324 (62.0%)  2070 (6.4)  6-4  81.4

While Pickett hasn’t turned the ball over at a high rate (particularly in 2023 when he threw just 4 INTs), his 13 TD passes in 24 career starts is an abnormally low number, as is his career 6.3 yards per pass attempt. The Steelers’ offense averaged 14.7 points per game in Pickett’s 12 starts in 2023.

Pickett suffered a high ankle sprain late in the season, but when he was well enough to play again, the Steelers continued to start Pickett’s backup, Mason Rudolph, rather than insert Pickett back into the starting lineup.

Pickett was reportedly upset with the Steelers’ signing of Russell Wilson this offseason:

In Philadelphia, Pickett will play behind a quarterback in Hurts who is far more entrenched as the starter than Wilson is in Pittsburgh. He might also have to fend off Tanner McKee for the No. 2 job. It’s worth noting that Pickett did make some nice throws during spring practices.

    Tanner McKee

McKee had a good training camp and preseason showing last year, but we (as in, the media) did not get to watch him practice once training camp wrapped. As such, it was unknown whether his play fell off during regular season practices or if he continued to impress. The team’s trade for Pickett this offseason showed that the Eagles were not yet ready to crown McKee as the No. 2 quarterback, but in my opinion, he was the sharpest of all the Eagles’ quarterbacks during their three-day minicamp in early June.

McKee dressed for all 18 Eagles games as the “emergency quarterback” in 2023, but the team never needed him to play. In 2024, he’ll very likely be the emergency quarterback again, at a minimum, with a chance to compete with Pickett for the No. 2 job in training camp.

    Will Grier

Grier was a Panthers third-round pick in 2019. He has since bounced around the league quite a bit.

    • Panthers (2019-2020)
    • Cowboys (2021-2022)
    • Bengals (2023)
    • Patriots (2023)
    • Chargers (2023)
    • Eagles (2024)

Grier played for Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for two years in Dallas, and for about a month in Los Angeles with the Chargers last season. He started two games for the Panthers as a rookie in 2019, and threw 0 TDs to 4 INTs. The Panthers lost both games. He has not appeared in a regular season game since.

Grier will help Moore install his offense, and could be a candidate to stick on the practice squad.

  • Setting The WR Market, Eagles Extend DeVonta Smith – Philadelphia Sports Nation

Setting The WR Market, Eagles Extend DeVonta Smith – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

The Eagles front office has done it again.

After speculation that the Eagles would be paying their WR2 next after agreeing to a 3-year $66M extension with Jordan Mailata just two weeks ago. News finally broke on Monday that not only would DeVonta Smith’s 5th year be picked up, but it also came with a nifty 3-year extension.

The Eagles will now have the following players on the offense under contract through 2026:

    • QB Jalen Hurts
    • QB Kenny Pickett
    • WR A.J. Brown
    • WR DeVonta Smith
    • RB Saquon Barkley
    • LT Jordan Mailata
    • LG Landon Dickerson
    • OL Tyler Steen
    • RT Lane Johnson

Not a bad thing to have 8 offensive starters under contract for the next 3 seasons!

But how did the Eagles get all these top tier players under contract without being well over the cap? (like the Saints have been for years)

    Ahead Of The League

This is now back to back off-seasons where Howie Roseman and co. have been able to extend franchise cornerstone players before the other 31 teams in the league came to terms with their counterparts.

    QB Frenzy

Starting with Jalen Hurts on April 17th 2023. A 5 year, $255M contract was signed ahead of the following quarterbacks

    • Joe Burrow – 5 years, $275M signed on September 7th 2023
    • Justin Herbert – 5 years, $262.5M signed on July 25th 2023
    • Lamar Jackson – 5 years, $260M signed on April 27th 2023

    Offensive Line Mania

Not only did the Eagles get away with drafting Jordan Mailata in the 7th round of the 2018 draft. They’ve now extended him. Twice! While doing so, the Eagles have gotten ahead by signing Mailata to a 3 year, $66M deal. Now under contract until 2029.

There weren’t many Offensive Tackles looking to be signed this off-season, but getting an extra 3 years from Mailata at $22M was perfect value giving some previously signed OT’s including:

    • Laremy Tunsil – 3 year, $75M signed on March 19th 2023
    • Andrew Thomas – 5 year, $117.5M signed on July 26th 2023

However, this was the perfect market to get the Left Tackle signed for those extra years. Because the following will be due for a 5th year option and probable extensions in the next year.

    • Penei Sewell – drafted 7th overall 2021
    • Rashawn Slater – drafted 11th overall 2021
    • Ronnie Stanley – 5 year, $98.75M signed in 2020

    Setting The WR Market

And that’s exactly how the Eagles have set the WR market with DeVonta Smith’s new deal.

Had the Eagles not worked as quickly as possible on this deal. They would’ve been at risk of the following Receivers potentially getting record breaking deals done first.

Since we don’t have contract money for these other receivers, let’s keep it simple and compare Yards/TDs.

    • DeVonta Smith – 50GP, 3,178 Rec Yards, 19 TD. signed a 3 year, $75M deal.
    • Justin Jefferson – 60GP, 5,899 Rec Yards, 30 TD. On a 5th year option for $19.74M
    • Ja’Marr Chase – 45GP, 3,717 Rec Yards, 29 TD.
    • Tee Higgins – 53GP, 3,684 Rec Yards, 24TD. On a $21.8M Franchise Tag
    • CeeDee Lamb – 61GP, 5,145 Rec Yards, 32TD. On a 5th year option for $17.99M

With DeVonta Smith’s extension checked off the offseason to-do list. The next big milestone will be the draft. Just one week away.

  • The Draft Is Coming… Will The Eagles Make Another Draft Day Trade? – Philadelphia Sports Nation

The Draft Is Coming… Will The Eagles Make Another Draft Day Trade? – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

We’re just under a month away from the 2024 NFL Draft.

Starting on April 25th, the Eagles will have the following picks after a fully loaded free agency.

After signing 13 players over the last few weeks the Eagles have found the solution to most of their 20 free agents this off-season.

Spotrac has the Eagles at a projected $10.5M in cap space, so they might be done spending as they’ll still have to sign all their rookies following the draft. If they’re looking to open up more cap space, the Eagles have yet to make any decisions on Josh Sweat or Haason Reddick.

Even after their shopping spree on the open market. The Eagles still have 8 picks in the upcoming draft, including 3 in the first 2 rounds.

The Eagles have already traded  #98 and two 2025 5th round picks for Kenny Pickett and #120. Moving down 22 spots and acquiring a QB with term.

And for a team that’s always active during the draft. Don’t expect them to be quiet.

    Previous Draft Trades

Below are the past 3 years of Draft Pick trades the Eagles have made

    2023 Draft

    • Eagles trade 10th pick and a 2024 4th to the Bears in exchange for 9th overall (Jalen Carter)
    • Eagles trade 62nd pick to the Texans in exchange for picks #65(Tyler Steen), #188(Tanner McKee) and #230
    • Eagles trade a 2024 3rd to the Texans in exchange for #105 (Kelee Ringo)
    • Eagles trade a 2025 4th to the Lions for D’Andre Swift and #249
    • Eagles trade #230 and #248 to the Texans for #191
    • Eagles trade #191 to Tampa Bay for a 2024 5th

    2022 Draft

    • (Pre-Draft) Eagles traded #16, #19 and #194 to New Orleans for #18, #101, #237, a 2023 1st and 2024 2nd
    • Eagles trade #15, #124, #162 and #166 to the Texans for #13 (Jordan Davis)
    • Eagles trade #18 and #101 to the Titans for A.J. Brown
    • Eagles trade #154 to Jacksonville for #188 and #198
    • Eagles trade #188 and #237 to Detroit for #181

    2021 Draft

    • (Pre-Draft) Eagles trade Carson Wentz for #84 and 2022 #16
    • (Pre-Draft) Eagles trade #6 and #156 to Miami for #12 and a 2022 1st
    • Eagles trade #12 and #84 to Dallas for #10 (DeVonta Smith)
    • Eagles trade #70 to Carolina for #73(Milton Williams) and #191(Tarron Jackson)
    • Eagles trade #225 and #240 to Washington for a 2022 5th

Time and time again the Eagles have shown to be very active in the draft. Loading up on future picks and trading up to acquire the guys they want.

It’ll be no surprise by the end of April if the Eagles have traded more of their picks. Whether it’s to acquire players or future picks we’ll have to wait to find out.

  • Hurts, McKee, Pickett & Grier! The QB Factory Is Back! – Philadelphia Sports Nation

Hurts, McKee, Pickett & Grier! The QB Factory Is Back! – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    [ad_1]

The Eagles have acquired their 2nd Quarterback of the free agency period.

While they had to trade a pair of 2025 7th round picks and drop from 98th to the 120th pick in this years draft when acquiring Pickett from Pittsburgh last week.

It was only a day later when the Steelers announced they had traded a 2025 6th round pick for Bears QB Justin Fields. Some had wanted the Eagles to pursue Fields as an Eagles backup. However, with only 1 year under contract before a $25.6M 5th-year option (which the Eagles would most likely not pick up).

Going after Pickett for 2 years with only $4.6M guaranteed is very similar to when they traded a 2022 6th round pick for 2 years of Gardner Minshew, who only cost the Eagles $3.39M.

With the following Quarterbacks under contract for multiple years

    • Jalen Hurts (2029)
    • Tanner McKee (2027)
    • Kenny Pickett (2027)

You’d think they’d be done with the QB market.

Until the QB factory opened its doors.

    4th QB On The Roster

There’s nothing to blow out of proportion with the Eagles signing Will Grier. Who will most likely be the 4th QB on the depth chart.

After Grier spent 2 seasons in Dallas he found himself signed to the Chargers practice squad last December, ending up with Eagles new OC Kellen Moore again. Moore is probably the biggest reason why the Eagles made this move. Bringing in a familiar face for a new system, and will bring competition to both Tanner McKee and Kenny Pickett.

Long Way Till Final Roster Cuts

Much like the Eagles signing of DeVante Parker, there’s no guarantee we’ll see Grier make it through 53-man roster cuts and could end up on the practice squad. So there’s no reason to overreact to the Eagles weekend signing. We’re a long way from the August deadline.

With the additions of LB Oren Burks, DT P.J. Mustipher, CB Tyler Hall, WR Parris Campbell, between the QB moves this week. The Eagles depth chart is being rounded out with over a month until the 2024 Draft, where the Eagles still hold three picks in the top 55. And have previously made outstanding moves in the draft, including last years Day 3 trade for D’Andre Swift.

As we inch closer and closer to April 25th, who do you expect the Eagles to announce with the 22nd overall pick?

  • Steelers honor Franco Harris by rallying past Raiders 13-10

Steelers honor Franco Harris by rallying past Raiders 13-10

    [ad_1]

PITTSBURGH — Kenny Pickett threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to George Pickens with 46 seconds remaining, and the Pittsburgh Steelers capped three days of tributes to the late Franco Harris with a 13-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night.

On the same night the Steelers retired Harris’ No. 32 — the Hall of Fame running back died Wednesday at age 72 — Pittsburgh (7-8) kept its faint playoff hopes alive by delivering another last-second victory over the Raiders. Las Vegas (6-9) was pushed to the brink of elimination from the postseason.

A day after the 50th anniversary of Harris’ “Immaculate Reception” win over the Raiders in the 1972 playoffs, Pickett deftly drove the Steelers 76 yards in 10 plays, the last a dart over the middle to a wide-open Pickens in the end zone.

Pickett completed 26 of 39 for 244 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Tight end Pat Freiermuth caught seven passes for 66 yards and Najee Harris had 95 total yards as the Steelers won for the fifth time in seven games.

Derek Carr threw for 174 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions, the last one a floater down the middle of the field that was picked off by Cam Sutton with 29 seconds to go. Pittsburgh rookie Connor Heyward ran for a first down to help the Steelers run out of the clock.

The Raiders, coming off a dramatic last-play victory over New England last week, reverted to their form from earlier this season by losing their eighth one-score game of the year. They could be eliminated from the playoffs by the end of the week.

The Steelers paid tribute to Harris in various ways during a bitterly cold night. Players wore replicas of his jersey while entering the stadium. Defensive captain Cam Heyward ran onto the field waving a massive flag with Harris’ number, and Pickett even shouted “Franco! Franco!” during his cadence before converting a quarterback sneak in the first half.

Still, it looked like it wouldn’t be enough. While Pittsburgh moved the ball with ease at times, it continued to struggle once it got near the end zone. Pickett threw an interception in the third quarter — his first in 145 attempts — and Chris Boswell missed a pair of field goals.

Carr started crisply in the 8-degree weather — the coldest home game for the Steelers since 1989 — and finished off a 14-play, 71-yard opening drive with a 14-yard touchdown strike to Hunter Renfrow.

Yet Las Vegas let the Steelers hang around, and Pickett — whose name was announced by Harris when Pittsburgh took him with the 20th overall pick in last spring’s draft — provided the first signature moment of what the Steelers hope will be a decorated career.

    HONORING HARRIS

What was supposed to become a celebratory weekend for one of the NFL’s marquee franchises turned bittersweet when Harris died just two days before the 50th anniversary of his “Immaculate Reception” against the Raiders in the 1972 playoffs.

The halftime ceremony featured many of Harris’ teammates from the 1970s Steelers dynasty. His widow, Dana Dokmanovich, and their son, Dok, joined Pittsburgh president Art Rooney II on stage. Dokmanovich leaned into Rooney after he handed her Harris’ jersey, and Pittsburgh Hall of Fame defensive end Joe Greene brushed away tears.

    INJURIES

Raiders: DE Chandler Jones exited with a left elbow injury in the third quarter after colliding with teammate Maxx Crosby and did not return. … LB Denzel Perryman went to the locker room with a left shoulder injury in the fourth quarter.

Steelers: CB Tre Norwood left in the first half with a hamstring injury and did not return.

    UP NEXT

Raiders: Host NFC West champion San Francisco on Jan. 1.

Steelers: At Baltimore on Jan. 1. The Ravens edged Pittsburgh 16-14 at Acrisure Stadium on Dec. 11.

  • Mahomes keeps turning double-digit deficits into wins

Mahomes keeps turning double-digit deficits into wins

    [ad_1]

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The most precarious lead in the NFL these days might be a double-digit one over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes engineered his 12th comeback from a deficit of at least 10 points in the past four seasons on Sunday when the Chiefs rallied for a 44-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers after falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter.

The Chiefs have won 12 of 17 games since the start of 2019 with Mahomes at quarterback after falling behind by at least 10 points, including all three games in the 2019 postseason.

Kansas City is just as likely to win by double-digits after facing the early deficit like they did against the Niners as the Chiefs are to lose the game.

It’s a far cry from the rest of the NFL. While the Chiefs have a .706 winning percentage in these scenarios, the rest of the league has a mark of just .154. No other QB who has faced at least three double-digit deficits has won even half, with Drew Brees’ 6-7 mark the second best.

In fact, the only other QB besides Mahomes to win more than 70% of his starts since 2019 is Aaron Rodgers, who has a .733 winning percentage in all starts.

Mahomes reached a few more milestones on Sunday when he won for the 55th time, tying Hall of Famer Ken Stabler for the most in a QB’s first 70 starts in the Super Bowl era. Otto Graham is the only quarterback in NFL history with more with 56.

Mahomes also had his eighth career game with at least 400 yards passing and at least three TDs. Only Brees (12), Peyton Manning (11), Dan Marino (11) and Tom Brady (8) have more. Those QBs have all started at least 242 games, while Mahomes has only 70.

    STRUGGLING STARS

Two of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history are off to rough starts with Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers both at 3-4 after back-to-back losses.

This marked the second time that Brady and Rodgers both lost in consecutive weeks with the only other coming in the final two weeks of the 2015 season.

Rodgers has a losing record through seven games for the first time as a starter and Brady’s only previous losing record at this juncture came in 2002 — the only healthy season that he failed to make the playoffs.

Their 19 combined TD passes are their fewest at this point in a season when both started, the 19.4 points per game average for their teams are more than six points lower than the previous low of 26 points per game through seven games in 2013, and their 93.7 passer rating is the lowest at this point since 2013 when it was 90.6.

    COMEBACK KIDS

The surprising New York Giants had their fifth second-half comeback of the season so far, rallying for a 23-17 win over Jacksonville to improve to 6-1.

The Giants joined the 2015 Falcons and 2007 Titans as the only teams to win at least five of their first seven games after trailing in the second half.

New York also became the first team since the 2016 Lions to win at least four of their first seven games when trailing in the fourth quarter.

The four wins so far this season for the Giants when trailing in the fourth quarter are more than they had in the previous five seasons combined when they went 3-58 in games they trailed in the fourth quarter.

The Giants’ success has helped the NFC East post a 20-7 (.741) combined record for the best for any division through seven weeks since the merger. The previous best winning percentage was .714 for the 1984 AFC West.

    ROOKIE WATCH

Pittsburgh rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett is off to a rough start to his career.

Pickett has thrown seven interceptions and only two touchdown passes in his first four career games. The only other QB since 1990 with at least seven interceptions and two or fewer TD passes in his first four games was Ryan Leaf, who had eight interceptions and one TD pass in his first four games in 1998.

    FAMILY AFFAIR

The trade that sent Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers linked the McCaffrey and Shanahan families once again.

When McCaffrey took the field Sunday for coach Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers it marked the fourth instance of a father-son duo coaching a father-son duo in NFL history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Christian’s older brother, Max, already played for Kyle Shanahan in 2018 after their father, Ed, played for Mike Shanahan from 1995-03 in Denver

The other times it happened came with coaches Bum and Wade Phillips. Rob Carpenter played for Bum Phillips and Bobby Carpenter playing for Wade Phillips, while Ted Washington Sr. played for Bum Phillips and Ted Washington Jr. played for Wade Phillips.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers Should Be In Seller Mode At Trade Deadline Following Loss To Miami Dolphins

Pittsburgh Steelers Should Be In Seller Mode At Trade Deadline Following Loss To Miami Dolphins

    [ad_1]

The Pittsburgh Steelers had some of us fooled for a period of time.

Following the Steelers’ 20-18 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6, there were some that actually believed Pittsburgh could threaten for a playoff spot. After all, at a 2-4 record, they were just one game out of the lead for the AFC North division. They had even defeated the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1.

That’s not even mentioning T.J. Watt’s impending return from injury, which is likely to happen in the coming weeks.

However, following their 16-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins, it’s very clear that this is a rebuilding squad led by a rookie quarterback going through some extreme growing pains.

The Steelers had their chances and actually almost pulled off the comeback against the Dolphins. However, rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett threw his second interception with the team in scoring position during the final five minutes of the game to seal the game.

“We didn’t give our offense a short field by producing a turnover or two, and they did, head coach Mike Tomlin said after the game. “So we go back to work. Disappointing, but we got another big game coming up and we’ll get focused. We will assess this, learn from it, and put together a plan and ready ourselves for the next one.”

But that wasn’t the reason for the loss. That’s Tomlin’s way of easing the pressure on an offensive unit surrounded by young talent.

The offense remains as stagnant as ever, Pickett seems to have a little bit of a knack for picks early on in his career and the defense is too inconsistent to be relied upon to carry the team.

“I thought he was highly competitive, played to win,” Tomlin said of Pickett. “He made some plays. Unfortunately he and we didn’t make enough.”

That’s because Pittsburgh is a rebuilding squad. Which means one thing — the Steelers should be sellers at the trade deadline.

Pittsburgh has one more game before the deadline which will come against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8. Barring a miraculous upset, it’s safe to assume they’ll lose that game and drop to a record of 2-6.

As Pittsburgh continues to go through growing pains during its first rebuilding season in nearly 20 years, the Steelers should move forward with offloading veterans. The most appealing of their assets heading into the deadline — Chase Claypool — is the perfect candidate to be moved.

The 24-year-old is having a slow start to the season, but a lot of that can be attributed to the offense itself and the fact that Pittsburgh is starting a rookie quarterback. While his stat line versus the Dolphins wasn’t too impressive — five catches for 41 yards — he was coming off of a seven-reception, 96-yard performance that saw him catch the game-winning touchdown.

Prior to the Steelers’ game in Miami, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Claypool is generating a lot of interest heading into the trade deadline on Nov. 1. However, Rapoport reports that Pittsburgh is not likely to deal their young receiver.

“Steelers WR Chase Claypool has been in focus, but is not expected to be dealt, barring a shift,” said Rapoport.

The entirety of the Steelers’ young core — Pickett, Diontae Johnson, George Pickens, Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth are under contract through the 2024 season. Claypool is the only one out of that core whose deal expires after the 2023 season. That’s not even mentioning the fact that the Steelers used a fourth-round draft pick on Calvin Austin, meaning he should figure into Pittsburgh’s plans at some point, if not this season.

In other words, after signing Johnson to a two-year, $36.7 million contract extension prior to the start of the season, they’ll also have to sign Claypool to a new deal. Despite Johnson’s role as Pittsburgh’s No. 1 receiver and Pickens’ emergence — he caught six passes for 61 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Dolphins — the Steelers are still reluctant to trade Claypool.

As noted by Mark Madden of Tribune Live, the Steelers would expect a package similar to what the Carolina Panthers received for two-time Pro Bowl running back Christian McCaffrey in their recent trade with the San Francisco 49ers. For perspective, the 49ers gave up second, third, fourth and fifth-round picks to the Panthers for McCaffrey.

Simply put, that’s not happening for Claypool.

The Steelers’ reluctance to trade their third-year receiver is understandable. They have a rookie quarterback starting who is having difficulty acclimating to the offense as is. By trading one of his favorite targets, he’ll be forced to rely upon rookie Pickens and the second-year Freiermuth (outside of Johnson).

But even with Claypool in the lineup, this offense is as stagnant as can be. Prior to their Week 7 matchup versus the Dolphins, the Pittsburgh came in averaging 16.2 points per game, 30th in the league. Following their 10-point output versus Miami — their second-lowest of the season — they’re now averaging just 15.3 points per game on the season, which would only rank ahead of the Denver Broncos.

Claypool will eventually seek a new deal. OTC currently has his contract valuation at a shade under $10 million per year. But that’s based upon this season’s production, where Claypool’s stats have dipped as a result of the Steelers’ quarterback play. Once the 6-foot-4, 238-pound receiver hits the open market as a 26-year-old in 2024, Claypool will likely seek a deal somewhat comparable to the one Johnson recently received at $18 million per year.

Considering NFL teams’ thirst for viable receivers, Pittsburgh could fetch a third-round draft pick for Claypool at the deadline.

The Steelers may have a strong stance on dealing before the deadline. But following their loss to the Dolphins — and likely another one versus the Eagles — Pittsburgh should back off its stance and deal Claypool.

In fact, they should look at every possible avenue in stocking up draft capital prior to the trade deadline.
