  • Keith Lee visited a west Fort Worth restaurant ahead of Small Business Saturday

Keith Lee, an online food critic with over 17.3 million followers on TikTok, visited a restaurant in west Fort Worth as part of an American Express small business initiative.

Lee, whose viral TikTok videos of him sampling food and bringing attention to small businesses, came to Drew’s Place Restaurant in the Como neighborhood on Monday, Nov. 3.

Drew’s Place, located at 5701 Curzon Ave,. is owned and operated by Drew and Stephanie Thomas and their daughter, Krystal. They were recently chosen as one of 50 U.S. historic small restaurants that will receive $50,000 from American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The grants are given as part of the organization’s Backing Historic Small Restaurants program, which invests in small, independent restaurants that serve as cultural and culinary landmarks across the U.S.

Yesterday, Lee released a new TikTok video where he is partnering with American Express to support small businesses for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29. In partnership with Main Street America, the Amex Shop Small Grant Program is a partnership with Main Street America to provide $20,000 grant to support small businesses across the country.

@keith_lee125 Supporting small businesses made me who I am today. This year, I’m tapping in #withAmex to back small businesses for #SmallBusinessSaturday — starting with Drew’s Place, a 2025 Backing Historic Small Restaurants grantee that’s been serving up good food and community for decades. They’re proof of how a little support can make a big difference. @American Express ♬ original sound – Keith Lee

“He’s kind of like his videos that we see, the same person, very genuine, very focused on giving back to some of the places that may get overlooked like the smaller businesses.,” said Krystal Thomas.

Lee didn’t try out their food like he usually does in his videos, but was there to shine a light on the restaurant and its recent award.

The family plans to use the money it won from the grant for new exterior paint, an expanded outdoor patio seating area, a mural on the wall facing their parking lot, a covered area for their walk-up customers, new lighting and a remodeled sign.

Stephanie Thomas was thankful for Lee’s visit, as small businesses like theirs depend on their customers and have little marketing, so opportunities like this are worthwhile.

“You typically won’t see us on TV ads, radio, if we’re lucky, and newspaper print, billboards, and a lot of times those are struggles for us,” Stephanie Thomas said. “ We understand the importance of advertising, so anytime you get a Keith Lee and American Express that can bring awareness to your small business, it’s amazing.“

Keith Lee Effect: TikTok food critic returns to Atlanta

Popular TikTok food critic Keith Lee returned to Atlanta on Wednesday to host a free food giveaway. In true Keith Lee fashion, he partnered with small, locally-owned Black businesses to help him give back to the community for the FamiLee ATL Community Event. In true Atlanta fashion, the city showed up in droves to support.

Over 500 people lined up outside of Za’Acai Cafe on Piedmont Avenue to grab free food and meet with the food critic as he returned to Atlanta. The event, which he announced on TikTok on Tuesday, was planned after he shared that he had to postpone his anticipated “redemption tour” visit to the city due to “business reasons.”

In October, Lee visited and reviewed some Atlanta and metro Atlanta businesses as a part of his ten-state 2023 food tour, prompting a debate about the city’s food scene and customer service. He later ranked Atlanta as the worst city on the tour due to poor customer service and the rules set in place by some businesses.

  • TikTok famous foodie Keith Lee starts his Phoenix restaurant reviews

TikTok famous foodie Keith Lee starts his Phoenix restaurant reviews

Former MMA fighter, TikTok star and self-proclaimed food critic Keith Lee has landed in Arizona.

In his reviews, Lee acquires takeout from local restaurants. He then eats in his car, filming his reactions and giving precise point ratings on a scale from 0 to 10 for each dish. This simple, yet effective, format has grown Lee a combined following of nearly 18 million on Instagram and TikTok. And along with that following comes influence — and controversy.

Positive reviews from Lee can result in restaurants seeing lines around the block of hungry customers wanting to try their food. This phenomenon has been dubbed the Keith Lee Effect.

Lee’s negative reviews can hurt small businesses, especially when his fans pile on the negativity. They sometimes clash with local restaurant customers, who criticize Lee’s method of visiting random cities for a few days and sharing opinions without much context.

Keith Lee posted a poll with four restaurant possibilities. The options included SugarJam The Southern Kitchen.

Where is Keith Lee going in Phoenix?

So far, it seems Lee’s visit to Arizona is going well. On Feb. 21, he announced via Instagram and TikTok that he would soon visit the Grand Canyon State  — but didn’t say when. He then asked his followers for recommendations for restaurants in four categories.

The restaurants should be “mom and pop spots that have great food and great customer service but could use some marketing,” popular spots voted on by locals, “restaurants from different backgrounds, different cultures and different ethnicities,” and lastly, the most popular spots on DoorDash.

On Monday, Lee posted a poll to his social media asking followers to vote on the popular restaurant that most represents Arizona’s food scene. The options were: SugarJam, Latha, Brunch House and Ace of Wings.

Then on Tuesday, Mesa restaurant Myungrang Hot Dog posted excitedly to its Instagram page that “something crazy happened.” Lee had stopped by.

“We are beyond thankful,” the post said. “Many of you mentioned us in his recent post and he actually came! He is such an amazing guy. He has gifted us with something we will soon share with you!!”

Myungrang Hot Dog is a massive chain with stores all over the world. The two Valley locations, in Mesa and Glendale, are operated by local franchisees.

Keith Lee’s first review in metro Phoenix

On Tuesday night, Lee’s first Arizona review dropped on TikTok. He visited Republica Empanada in Mesa. According to his video, Lee’s wife was in a shoe store when a Republica Empanada employee saw her and recommended they visit the Mesa restaurant. She posed for a photo with the woman, who is later shown meeting Lee at the restaurant after he tries the food.

Lee tried and rated five empanadas on a scale of 0 to 10. He gave the Cubana an eight, the chicken and mushroom an 8.5  and the jalapeno popper flavor a four, docking points for the texture being “overly soft.” Of the sweet options, Lee gave the Nutella banana an eight, and the Ruiz’s Pieces, a riff on the classic peanut butter and chocolate candy, a one out of 10. Lee does preface this low rating with the fact he’s not a huge fan of desserts.

Overall, he praised Republica Empanada’s fresh oil, the crispy and flakey texture of the empanadas and was a fan of the salsa.

“If this place is slow, in my opinion, it shouldn’t be,” Lee said — words that may hint at what’s to come for the small Mesa business. At the end of the video, Lee went inside the restaurant to find the woman who had recommended the eatery to his wife.

“We told her no promises, but it might get a little crazy tomorrow,” he said. So far the video has 1.3 million views.

Lee then says he left a $500 tip for the employees and an extra $600 to pay for any customer orders that came in after them.

    Bracing for impact

So far, Lee’s visit to the Valley seems to be bringing positivity. But that’s not always the case when he rolls into town.

When he visited San Francisco, chaos ensued. After local restaurants and media alike braced for Lee’s visit and the resulting reviews, he cut his trip short and left after three days. He shared that he’d suffered a severe allergic reaction, and also alluded to a general lack of love for the Bay area’s internationally acclaimed dining scene. He has also been vocal about his dislike of Atlanta’s food scene, which didn’t sit well with locals.

When news media sends out-of-town reporters to cover local stories, it’s called parachute journalism and often, national reporters miss important context on a local story. The far-reaching nature of social media stardom has made parachute influencing a thing, too.

However, as newsrooms continue to shrink across the U.S. and the number of traditional food critics dwindles, perhaps Lee represents a new sort of food critic.

In Phoenix, food influencers abound yet few traditional food critics remain. The position is currently unfilled at the state’s largest publication, the Arizona Republic. At Phoenix New Times, we are lucky to have the insightful opinions of a freelance food critic, who writes one thoroughly researched, context-heavy review each month. But Dominic Armato’s definition of food critic certainly differs from Lee’s.

Lee hasn’t announced his plans for the rest of his visit to the Valley. However, don’t expect to see him roll up to the counter at your favorite eatery. Lee most often uses family members to place his orders so he doesn’t receive special treatment and to maintain his credibility. However, if the Republica Empanada shoe store story is any indication, his wife is becoming equally recognizable.

Whether the former MMA fighter’s Phoenix visit will result in the Keith Lee Effect or a messy food fight for Valley eateries remains to be seen.

  • Updated: Keith Lee’s Dallas Poll is Live

Updated: Keith Lee’s Dallas Poll is Live

Update: Keith Lee has posted a poll on Instagram with four restaurants he will consider when planning his visit to Dallas. The restaurants are Pangea, Aunt Irene’s, Terry Black’s BBQ and Kitchen and Kocktails. Now, we love all of those — Pangea, and Kitchen and Kocktails are on our Top 100. But neither Terry Black’s nor Kitchen and Kocktails really needs marketing, which is something Lee looks for. The latter is one of the highest-grossing restaurants in Dallas, based on the Texas Comptroller’s liquor sales reports. Terry Black’s usually seems to have a packed house, and it’s also out of Austin, hence not local and certainly not owned by a local family. We’re anxious to see where he ends up.

Watch out, Dallas. Keith Lee is bringing his popular TikTok food tour to town.

The Detroit native is a former MMA fighter turned social media foodie with more than 15 million followers on TikTok checking out his matter-of-fact restaurant reviews.

Lee and his family travel around the country assessing the food scene based on a handful of restaurants. Before visiting an area, Lee researches restaurants known for great food and customer service, with an eye toward those who could use a little extra marketing love. He also tries to find places that highlight diversity. He has visited about a dozen cities so far and in some cases has received a bit of criticism for not going to the “right” places. So, for Dallas he’ll have a poll on his IG stories so locals can help him decide.

And many of y’all are already suggesting Terry Black’s in the comments, which we can’t agree with more, but it is based out of Austin by way of Lockhart, if that matters.

At the end of 2023, Lee ranked the eight cities he visited that year. Atlanta was at the bottom of his list (long wait times), New York City was seventh and Detroit, which he said lacked some diversity compared with other cities, was sixth.

LA was fifth because, he said, it was a challenge to find diverse spots at first, but those he did find were “delicious.” Vegas was fourth, all based on great off-the-strip restaurants. Chicago was third: “Almost every time we got food, absolutely delicious,” he said.

Houston was second, carried in part by a place called The Puddery, a locally owned dessert shop that on some days before he visited would get just two customers a day. Lee indulged in the from-scratch banana pudding (9.2 out of 10 stars) and an Oreo croissant waffle (9 out of 10 stars). The day after his video was posted, The Puddery had a line wrapped around the building. Good for them.

Finally, the best food city he’s visited so far was New Orleans, in large part because of the hospitality. And, well, the food. Who can argue?

But, things don’t always go so well. Case in point: San Francisco. He left the city early because he felt it wasn’t a tourist city. “I don’t believe The Bay is fit for tourists at the moment,” he said. He also had to visit the emergency room after an allergic reaction — maybe that had something to do with it.

Some of Lee’s visits to restaurants, which are always anonymous, end with a cash donation to the restaurant. Lee never charges fees, unlike many social-media-based food influencers.

Keep an eye out for that survey, and we’ll keep an eye out for Lee at some of our favorite hidden gems.

Funniest, Wildest & Messiest BOSSIP Headlines Of 2023

    Source: Carol M. Highsmith/Buyenlarge/Getty Images

2023 was another Golden Corral buffet of premium shenanigans from Pound Town to Montgomery, Alabama where Ancestrally-Charged African-American Avengers dragged anglo-aggressors into the alabaster abyss during the now-infamous “Fade In The Water.”

There was chair-swangin’ and pain-brangin’ everywhere during the chaotic scene that immediately blew up the whole entire internet.

Easily the greatest moment of 2023, the now-infamous “Riverboat Rumble” stirred up HILARIOUS jokes, memes, and commentary in yet another example of Black Twitter being the epicenter of entertainment.

It was a year of SkeeYees, super freaky pop-pops, shiny Renaissance fabrics, and the hoaxiest hoax of all hoaxes committed by Cheez-It-dusted viral villain Carlee Russell.

    Carlee Russell

    Source: Hoover Police Department

After days of confusion and public scrutiny, Russell admitted that she was not abducted after “stopping to check on a baby walking alone.”

There was no baby on Alabama’s Interstate I459 and the entire thing was described as an “elaborate” hoax

Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, sent a statement to Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis confirming that her kidnapping was a farce.

“Dear Chief Derzis, my client has given me permission to make the following statement on her behalf: There was no kidnapping on July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have any help in this incident, but this was a single act done by herself,’’ Anthony wrote according to AL.com.

Russell was eventually found guilty of two misdemeanor crimes, false reporting to law enforcement authorities, and falsely reporting an incident with the judge recommending that she pay $18,000 in restitution and spend six months in jail per charge for a total of one year.

Overall, 2023 was a charcuterie platter of WTFery with Kelis (reportedly) bringing her milkshake to Bill Murray‘s yard, krusty Karens Karening around town, and Jada Pinkett Smith telling ALL of her business (EVERY BIT OF IT) to anyone who would listen.
