  • Colorado Rep. Don Wilson leaves unattended gun at state Capitol

Colorado Rep. Don Wilson leaves unattended gun at state Capitol

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado Springs lawmaker Don Wilson left his firearm unattended at the state Capitol building on Tuesday, according to a statement.

Wilson, a Republican representing House District 20, claimed in his statement that he left his firearm “briefly unattended” after the building was closed to the public.

This statement was also posted on X on Thursday. In his statement, he refers to the incident as a “mistake” and that he is “very sorry.”

“I take firearm safety very seriously. This is a humbling experience and I will reaffirm my commitment to responsible handling procedures,” Wilson said in his statement.

Colorado State Patrol said in a release that a janitor found the gun, a loaded 9 mm Glock handgun, inside a restroom. The gun was left unattended for 23 minutes, according to CSP, and returned to Wilson that night.

    Capitol security protocol

The incident comes as lawmakers consider the proposed Senate Bill 24-131: “Prohibiting Carrying Firearms in Sensitive Spaces.” This proposed bill would ban open and concealed firearms in government buildings, which includes legislators.

Right now, it is unlawful for someone to carry a gun in the building except for “individuals with Capitol credentials and access” who are following state laws, according to CSP. Concealed carry is also prohibited at the Capitol, according to Capitol security protocols

A similar situation occurred in 2022 when state Rep. Richard Holtorf’s gun fell off in the Capitol.

An investigation determined no state laws were broken in the recent incident.

    Democrats release statements

On Thursday, Colorado House Democrats released statements about Wilson leaving the firearm in the state Capitol.

The consequences of leaving a firearm unattended in a public space could be very serious, and the incident this week created a dangerous situation. This should not have happened and cannot happen again, and this is why our caucus is pursuing legislation to prohibit carrying firearms in the Capitol. I hope Rep. Wilson appreciates the severity of his mistake and the safety concern this has created for us in the Capitol.

    House Speaker Julie McCluskie

As a responsible firearm owner, it’s frustrating and disappointing to continually see colleagues make mistakes with their guns. Everyone who carries a firearm must do so with the utmost care at all times, which is why it is so important to me that people receive proper training and observe it and that we strengthen the requirements for a concealed carry permit. I’ve expressed my deepest concerns to Rep. Wilson and Minority Leadership. It’s my expectation that he follows through with his commitment not to carry his firearm at the Capitol.

    House Majority Leader Monica Duran

As of Thursday at 1:30 p.m., nothing had been released from the Colorado House Republicans.

FOX31 is looking into whether Wilson has a concealed carry permit.

  • Englewood spa loses over $200K to break-in after grand opening

Englewood spa loses over $200K to break-in after grand opening

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — An Englewood spa owner hopes the community can help catch the person who broke in and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment right after the spa opened.

At Merlan Salon Boutique & Spa, those walking in or past the building are greeted by a sign saying “what a beautiful life we’ve built.”

Owner Sarah Simon bought, revamped and transformed the building on South Broadway into her dream salon, boutique and spa filled with stylish and sentimental touches.

“It’s been kind of like my refuge during hard times,” Simon said. “I lost my mom last year and I went through divorce, and that’s how it started. It’s just been a wild journey from zero to where we are right now.”

Simon and her team had their grand opening celebration on Saturday. On Monday, they walked into a shattering discovery with items knocked down and a glass window broken.

“That’s when I went back where the most expensive machine that we have is, and it was gone,” Simon said.

Over $200K in Englewood spa equipment stolen

Simon discovered a number of high-tech hair dryers and tools were stolen along with their Emsculpt machine.

“With everything, we’re looking probably about $200,000 to $250,000 worth of things being stolen,” Simon said. “We had to cancel all of our clients that are getting an Emsculpt. We had packages sold, all sorts of things. It’s just — it’s a violation.”

Simon feels especially violated by the timing of this theft: right after the opening celebration where they showed people their services, including the machine now taken from them.

“I don’t know if it’s somebody that we know, somebody who has been in here, and that’s more of a violation to me,” Simon said. “That’s the most disheartening part.”

Englewood Police Department asks anyone with information about a suspect or what happened to call their non-emergency line at 303-761-7410.

For those asking how to support Simon and Merlan Salon Boutique & Spa, she asks that you book and experience their services.

Parker man accused of killing wife with hammer

PARKER, Colo. (KDVR) — A Parker man remains in jail after authorities say he killed his wife with a hammer.

An arrest affidavit states that 73-year-old James Beeker committed the crime on April 4. His wife, 78-year-old Angel Beeker, was found inside the family home on Wheatgrass Circle with blunt force trauma to the head and soon was pronounced dead.

James Beeker was arrested and is facing charges of first-degree murder. He is being held at the Douglas County Detention Facility.

“I talked to the husband every now and again, in passing,” neighbor Matt Wade said. “And we were friendly, but didn’t go much beyond the surface.”

  • Civic Center Park flower beds to be planted after all, despite budget cuts

Civic Center Park flower beds to be planted after all, despite budget cuts

DENVER (KDVR) — Fear not, lovers of color, flowers and civic engagement: The Civic Center Conservancy has stepped up to ensure blooms fill Civic Center Park’s beds this year, despite city budget cuts.

Denver announced in early February that as part of cost-saving measures to continue supporting migrants and sheltering them, the city would not be planting its flower beds.

The city projected a cost of $180 million to shelter migrants brought to the Mile High City from the southern border in 2024 alone. That cost dropped to $120 million after the city consolidated four shelters.

It’s not clear how much the city anticipates saving by not planting flowers. The city’s largest plantings are in Civic Center Park, Washington Park and City Park.

But the flower beds are one of the more visual measures that residents are starting to notice.

“If we weren’t stepping into this role this year, we would certainly not see — we would see dirt beds in Civic Center Park just like we are going to see throughout the city,” said Eric Lazzari, executive director of Civic Center Conservancy. “The flower beds here represent more than just plant life but an opportunity of welcome and accessibility. Parks are public health and so are flowers.”

The conservatory is seeking volunteers to help maintain the flower beds. The nonprofit also says that they are also raising $25,000 to help with future beautifying efforts. Details are available at civiccenterpark.org.

Colorado seeks input on Speer, 23rd bridges over I-25

DENVER (KDVR) — On Monday, the Colorado Department of Transportation held an open house to hear resident feedback about the future of the bridges over Interstate 25 at Speer Boulevard and 23rd Avenue.

The goal is also to increase safety for cyclists, pedestrians and micro-mobility. One thing appears certain: Both bridges will be replaced.

“They are in need of replacement. They were built long ago. They are aging,” CDOT spokesperson Tamara Rollison said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is seeking input on the future of the bridges over Interstate 25 at Speer Boulevard and 23rd Avenue.

The three-hour event was held at CDOT headquarters in Denver. Transportation officials were present to answer questions and listen to suggestions.

David Chen rode his bicycle to the meeting and said he hopes the state will shut down the ramps to enter and exit the highway at 23rd Avenue.

“Can you imagine having kids in strollers walking down to the Children’s Museum or the aquarium with their families?” Chen said.

Residents who could not attend the open house are encouraged to email comments or suggestions to CDOT.

Rollison said the design and construction of the bridges should take place in 2026.

  • Boulder holding spoiled food collection event after power outages

Boulder holding spoiled food collection event after power outages

DENVER (KDVR) — The City of Boulder is hosting a spoiled food collection event Monday after thousands of people were without power due to high winds over the weekend.

All Boulder County residents who lost power will be able to take spoiled food to Western Disposal’s transfer site, located at 2051 63rd Street, starting at 7 a.m.

“Bring spoiled food in non-glass containers for composting. If you have food in glass containers, please empty the food into plastic bags/containers and recycle the glass in your curbside bin,” the city’s website reads.

How long does food keep safe without power?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, if you keep the doors to your appliances closed, food will stay safe for several hours, even without power.

For refrigerators, food will stay safe for up to four hours. For freezers, food will stay safe for up to 48 hours if the freezer is full, and 24 hours if the freezer is half full.

If the power has been out for over four hours and you have access to a cooler, the CDC recommends that people put their perishable foods in there to keep them at a safe temperature.

Food has to stay under 40 degrees to be considered safe. If there is any doubt about whether a food item is safe, it is better to be safe and throw it out, the CDC said.

  • Rockies’ Kris Bryant hears the boos and death threats

Rockies’ Kris Bryant hears the boos and death threats

‘I’ve been through it all: death threats, “Kill yourself,” all the craziness that this game will dish out’

DENVER (KDVR) — The game of baseball can be a cruel sport. Just ask Colorado Rockies first baseman Kris Bryant.

He was booed, cheered and booed again in the Rockies’ 10-7 home opener win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday at Coors Field.

“I’ve been through it all: death threats, ‘Kill yourself,’ all the craziness that this game will dish out,” Bryant said after the victory. “I just keep on keeping on.”

When asked about when the death threats occurred, Bryant did not give any specifics, saying that he has deleted his social media accounts. The four-time All Star and 2015 Rookie of the Year for the Chicago Cubs is now in his third season with the Rockies.

“I’m sure there’s something on my Instagram somewhere. I don’t have social media during the year,” Bryant explained at this locker. “I can’t say when (the threats occurred), but I’ve had them before.”

‘You play me at Monopoly, I’m going to want to beat you’

The Rockies first baseman answered questions about the threats and his play on the field following the win. Bryant has 5 hits in 23 at bats to start the 2024 season. The face of the franchise is in the third year of a seven-year, $182 million contract with Colorado.

“I want to play good. That’s just who I am, in everything I do. You play me at Monopoly, I’m going to want to beat you,” Bryant said.

Bryant did find success at the plate Friday, hitting his first home run of the year. However, a dropped catch in the dirt at first base allowed the Rays to take the lead in the ninth inning. Third baseman Ryan McMahon hit a grand slam as the Rockies (2-6) sent a sellout crowd of 48,399 home happy.

“It takes courage to keep showing up. It’s gonna make you a better person at the end of your career, and it’s something that you know I’ll be able to teach my kids through adversity,” Bryant said.

McMahon hits walk-off grand slam, Rockies rally to beat Rays

DENVER (AP) — Ryan McMahon hit a walk-off grand slam after committing an error in the ninth inning that allowed the Tampa Bay Rays to score the go-ahead run, and the Colorado Rockies rallied for a 10-7 victory in their home opener Friday.

McMahon sent the first pitch he saw from reliever Jason Adam over the fence in right-center to set off a roar from the sellout crowd at Coors Field.

After leading 6-2 in the ninth, the Rockies let the Rays take a 7-6 lead as Ben Rortvedt scored the tiebreaking run when McMahon made a throw in the dirt from third base that converted first baseman Kris Bryant couldn’t scoop.

McMahon made up for that in a big way with his first homer of the season, propelling the Rockies to their second win in front of 48,399 fans on a sun-splashed afternoon. Colorado improved to 17-13 in home openers at Coors Field since the hitter-friendly park opened in 1995.

Rays reliever Pete Fairbanks (0-1) walked the first three hitters to start the ninth before giving way to Adam, who promptly struck out Bryant. That set the stage for McMahon.

Jalen Beeks (1-0) earned the win by finishing off the top of the ninth.

Ezequiel Tovar hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning and Bryant added some insurance by lining his first homer of the season in the eighth.

But the four-run cushion didn’t hold up as the Rays rallied with four straight hits off reliever Justin Lawrence. Rortvedt tied the game with a two-run single, then raced home on McMahon’s errant throw.

Zack Littell was solid for Tampa Bay in a no-decision, allowing one run over five innings. He struck out five.

Colorado starter Austin Gomber threw 41 pitches in the first inning and was taken out after the fourth. He struck out seven and gave up two runs.

The temperature was 75 degrees at first pitch, making it the warmest April home opener in Rockies history.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Rays: INF Brandon Lowe left Wednesday’s game due to tightness in his left side and wasn’t in the starting lineup Friday following a day off. He entered as a pinch hitter in the sixth, grounding out, and stayed in the game at second base.

    UP NEXT

The Rockies will send right-hander Ryan Feltner (0-1, 5.40 ERA) to the mound Saturday. Tampa Bay is slated to go with lefty Tyler Alexander (0-0, 9.00).

  • Is one of these 27 bikes yours? Last call to claim them from police evidence

Is one of these 27 bikes yours? Last call to claim them from police evidence

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (KDVR) — Did your bike go missing in the last few years?

Police in Wheat Ridge have recovered a couple dozen of them, and time is running out to claim them. After that, there’s a plan to put them to good use.

As part of a city of Wheat Ridge ordinance, if you believe one of the 27 bikes is yours, you have until April 16 to claim it. Claims for custody of goods must be made on or before 4 p.m. on the final release date.

All you need is an accurate description, including the model and the serial number, which you can typically find on the bottom of the pedal housing.

At first glance, the evidence shed may resemble any old shed, but the inside is filled with dozens of seized or abandoned bikes that are now ready to be claimed.

“Through the course of our investigations, we accumulate a lot of evidence, and sometimes that’s bicycles that can come from anything from a hit-and-run, or maybe a suspect is trying to get away from us,” said Alex Rose, Wheat Ridge Police Department public information officer. “We’ve been doing this for more than a dozen years, and unfortunately, we’ve only had one person come and step up and get their bike back. Obviously, we want to see more people come up and be unified with their bikes.”

27 bikes in Wheat Ridge police custody

Here is a list of the 27 bikes that are currently being stored in the evidence:

    • Green Diamondback Wildwood
    • Black Mongoose Bicycle
    • Red Specialized Allez Bike
    • Green/Black Trek 3500 Bicycle
    • Black Hyper Havoc Bike
    • Black & Orange Mongoose Mode bicycle
    • Black Mongoose Hotshot 700C
    • White Roadmaster Granite Peak bike
    • Light Blue Huffy Nel Lusso Bicycle
    • Light Blue Schwinn GTX2 Bike
    • Red Gary Fisher Genesis Bike
    • Silver & GREEN Trek 3700 Bike
    • Maroon & Silver Next PowerX bike
    • Teal GT Talera bike
    • Teal Schwinn bicycle
    • Black & Green Haro Flightline bicycle
    • Teal Schwinn Al Comp bike
    • Purple Roadmaster Mt Climber Bike
    • Navy CO-OP REV 20 Bike
    • Red Peugot Course BikeTeal Raven bike
    • Blue & Silver Huffy Highlander Bike
    • Light Blue Diamondback Clarity Bicycle
    • Black & White Kent Ambush FS20 bike
    • Black & Gray Giant Cypress bicycle
    • Black/gray Schwinn Ranger bicycle
    • Silver Genesis GX7 bicycle

Last year, 62 bikes were stored in the evidence shed.

“We do everything we can to make sure people’s property are back in their possession, but when we keep on striking out on that effort, this is what happens. And again, we just try to put them to the best use,” Rose said.

    Unclaimed bikes refurbished, donated

So to put them to use, officers partner with local bike shops like Yawp Cyclery, where the bicycles are refurbished, returned and donated to local communities. Yamp has tuned up about 15 bikes so far.

“We know the 30 or so bikes we gave to the Optimist Club, they partnered those off and gave them to a nonprofit called Bicycles for Humanity. Those are actually on a shipping container on their way to Africa. I just think it’s fantastic we have a chance to partner and give these bikes a better home, whether it’s in Wheat Ridge or overseas, and countries and communities who can really use them,” Rose said.

Another thing that officers will do when a bike is reported stolen is check it into a state database. It means whether it’s stolen out of Fort Collins, Colorado Springs or Denver, they should be able to cross-reference that serial number.

“If, say, you don’t have the serial number but you bought it from a local bike shop, you can always go back to that bike shop and ask, hey, remember me, I bought a bike like three years ago,” Rose said. “You can ask, do you still have me on file? And maybe you can still find the serial number that way.”

If you believe one of the unclaimed bikes is yours, reach out to the Wheat Ridge Police Evidence Department at (303) 235-2928.

  • Colorado senator apologizes for behavior at Northglenn meeting, steps down from committee

Colorado senator apologizes for behavior at Northglenn meeting, steps down from committee

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado Sen. Faith Winter announced Thursday she will step down from her role as a committee chair and seek substance abuse treatment after apologizing for her behavior at a town hall meeting Wednesday night.

The state Senate’s assistant majority leader was a panel member at a packed Northglenn town hall meeting to discuss a mental health transitional living facility, where sex offenders could be living close to an elementary school.

Winter arrived late for the meeting and stumbled in her speech at points. Winter told The Colorado Sun she is seeking alcoholism treatment.

“I deeply regret my behavior last night,” Winter said in a statement on Thursday. “I made a mistake and I’m truly sorry for any inconvenience or discomfort I caused. I take full responsibility for my actions and I am committed to making things right.”

Winter represents District 25. That includes Northglenn and Broomfield, along with parts of Adams and Weld counties.

“I especially apologize to the City of Northglenn and the citizens that came out – I deeply care about your thoughts and community. I am now under the care of medical professionals and receiving treatment for my substance abuse disorder,” she said.

The senator added that she will be stepping down as chair of the Transportation and Energy committee to “focus on my health.”

“I apologize to anyone who was affected by my actions and I appreciate your understanding. Thank you for respecting me and my family’s privacy at this time.”

Winter was a bill sponsor of a measure in the 2022 legislature to increase the number of residential behavioral health beds in the state, which was of discussion as it supported the establishment of the facility in Northglenn.

Winter arrived 10 minutes after the livestream for the meeting started and seemed unaware that she was a member of the panel. At one point, an audience member asked her why she was scrolling her phone.

“I’m looking up some statistics,” she said with a slight verbal stumble.

Winter said toward the end of the meeting that the bill was intended to increase the state’s capacity for mental health beds. She said that she would fill a late bill request on the matter.

  • Colorado to pay rancher after wolf depredation, but will that be enough?

Colorado to pay rancher after wolf depredation, but will that be enough?

GRAND COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The first report of wolf depredation by reintroduced wolves has been confirmed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife after an extensive investigation.

Now, the calf’s owner is due for compensation from the state, but some say that payment is not enough.

On Tuesday morning, a landowner called to report a dead calf.

“The results of this investigation indicated wounds consistent with wolf depredation,” CPW Area Wildlife Manager Jeromy Huntington said. “The field investigation found multiple tooth rake marks on the calf’s hindquarters and neck, and hemorrhaging under the hide, consistent with wolf depredation. Wolf tracks were also found nearby.”

In an email to FOX31, CPW also said: “The wolf or wolves involved were part of the 10 wolves that were reintroduced to Colorado in December 2023.”

Colorado Parks and Wildlife releases a gray wolf on Dec. 18, 2023, as part of the voter mandate to reintroduce the animals to the state (Colorado Parks and Wildlife)

For ranchers, wolf worries are about more than their livelihoods

For some ranchers, the fact it happened now came as a surprise.

“It’s crazy to think for most of us up here that it took this long to actually happen,” said Tim Ritschard, president of Middle Park Stockgrower;s Association.

Erin Karney, executive vice president of Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, said it is also unexpected, given it is now the thick of calving season. But to Karney, it also means with one incident already reported, there could soon be more.

“A lot of the cows are calving and this is, you know, kind of the time, and they’re kind of easy prey for apex predators like wolves,” she said.

Now, many ranchers are making more frequent checks, knowing there are more predators to worry about.

“I guarantee you that every livestock producer is doing all they possibly can to protect their livestock, because that’s ultimately their livelihood, but it’s more than that,” Karney said.

CPW has previously stated they will compensate ranchers and farmers for any livestock lost to a wolf, but ranchers say it is not about the monetary value of their animals.

“I actually have a couple pet cows,” Ritschard said. “Looking at my cows, some of these cows — I have like a 10-year-old cow. I mean, they’re part of the family.”

Looking to the future, ranchers said they hope they can keep their communication strong with CPW about where wolves are and what steps they can take to ensure they are keeping their livestock safe.

Some ranchers said they hope it will be enough.

“I think we all can sit in Denver or other metropolitan areas and say someone else can deal with that, it’s really cool that these animals are in the state. But it’s not only their livelihood, it’s not only livestock, but you know, it’s that fear that an apex predator is in their backyards,” Karney said.

CPW said they will continue to have staff follow up with producers in the area where the incident occurred and make sure they have the appropriate, non-lethal deterrents available.

  • Lauren Boebert’s blood clot raises awareness about May-Thurner syndrome

Lauren Boebert’s blood clot raises awareness about May-Thurner syndrome

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert is recovering after having emergency surgery to remove a blood clot in her leg.

Her campaign announced that she was admitted to UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland after experiencing some severe swelling in her upper left leg. The clot was surgically removed and a stent was inserted after Boebert was diagnosed with May-Thurner syndrome.

Dr. E. Brooke Spencer is an interventional radiologist in Highlands Ranch who treats patients with this syndrome but has no connection to Boebert.

“May-Thurner syndrome is a compression of that iliac vein by the artery,” Spencer said.

She said 30% of the population has the syndrome but only a small percentage develop blood clots.

“People usually show up with signs of pain and swelling, or blue discoloration in their leg, aching in the leg, sometimes in the groin. I see a lot of people who think they have a hernia at first,” Spencer said.

The cause of the syndrome is not fully understood, but doctors say women between 20 and 40 who have given birth are more likely to be affected.

“If it’s treated correctly and appropriately most people can get back to a level where they may have some swelling intermittently throughout their life or have to wear a compression sock, but they usually get back to normal function pretty quickly,” Spencer said.

On X Boebert posted a note of thanks for all the support she’s received.

“Hoping to see you all back on the campaign trail soon,” she said.

Her experience has raised awareness. Spencer said to minimize the risk of a blood clot, people should wear compression stockings, get up and walk around on long flights and take breaks during long drives.

  • Nikola Jokic scores 42 and outduels Victor Wembanyama in Nuggets’ 110-105 win over Spurs

Nikola Jokic scores 42 and outduels Victor Wembanyama in Nuggets’ 110-105 win over Spurs

DENVER (AP) — Two-time MVP Nikola Jokic scored 42 points and outdueled Rookie of the Year favorite Victor Wembanyama in Denver’s 110-105 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night to retake sole possession of first place in the West.

Jokic also grabbed 16 rebounds and had six assists. Wembanyama had 23 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and nine blocks. Three of Jokic’s baskets came on rare dunks, something he said he had to do facing the sensational rookie.

“He had like 600 blocks tonight, but we got the win,” Jokic said after Denver leap-frogged Oklahoma City atop the Western Conference playoff race.

The Nuggets (53-23) took a half-game lead over Oklahoma City, which lost 109-105 at Philadelphia earlier Tuesday night. The Minnesota Timberwolves (52-23) kept pace with Oklahoma City when they beat Houston 113-106.

Jokic’s hook shot broke a 103-103 tie but Wembanyama’s layup at the other end knotted it up again with a minute remaining.

Michael Porter Jr., who had 15 points and a career-best 16 rebounds, made a 3 with 28 seconds left to put Denver up 108-105 and Wembanyama missed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left but the Spurs burned 10 seconds before Wembanyama fouled Jokic, who sank both free throws with 8 seconds remaining.

The Nuggets had a tough time shaking off the scrappy Spurs, taking a one-point lead into both halftime and the fourth quarter before Denver’s reserves used an 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter while Jokic was grabbing his usual breather on the bench.

Jokic returned with Denver ahead 99-92 but back-to-back 3s by Tre Jones, who had his third career triple-double (10 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists), and Sandro Mamukelashvili tightened it up again, setting up a thrilling finish with Jokic and Wembanyama going at it until the very end.

Even with the Spurs missing Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson, all suffering from foot injuries, San Antonio was no pushover for the Nuggets, who were without point guard Jamal Murray (knee) for a sixth straight game.

Malaki Branham added 24 points for San Antonio, which got double-digit scoring from seven players.

Murray, who’s dealing with right knee soreness and has also been nursing a sprained left ankle and suffering from shin splints, sat out his sixth consecutive game.

  • University of Colorado student accused of on-campus sexual assault

University of Colorado student accused of on-campus sexual assault

DENVER (KDVR) — A University of Colorado Boulder student is accused of sexually assaulting another student and causing serious injury.

According to the suspect’s arrest affidavit, the victim said she met a man named Henry, later identified as 22-year-old Henry Torres Terhaar, on the dating app Tinder in December. The pair exchanged a few messages before meeting each other on Dec. 9, where they had a consensual intimate relationship.

On Dec. 12, the victim said they went on another date, where Terhaar was acting differently and cold. The victim then said they went back to her dorm room on campus to watch a movie, which is where the alleged assault occurred.

After the alleged assault, the two went to the bathroom separately and when the victim got back to her room, Terhaar and his belongings were gone. The victim said she did not realize what had happened at first and texted Terhaar to ask where he went.

She said he texted her that he did not like her attitude, which is when the victim said she realized “he did this out of anger,” per the affidavit. “This” is unclear whether it is referring to leaving the dorm or the alleged sexual assault.

The victim then blocked Terhaar and removed all contact with him.

The victim went to a hospital the next day and a doctor noted that she had sustained serious injuries to her neck and other injuries on her body, according to the affidavit. A doctor reportedly told investigators the victim sustained serious bodily injury, substantial risk of death, permanent disfiguration and protracted loss or impairment of the function of a part or organ of the body.

In February, the detective assigned to the case reached out to Terhaar, who confirmed the pair had sexual intercourse on Dec. 12, but he said it was all consensual and he did not do anything he considered abnormal. According to the affidavit, Terhaar said he believed that the victim was accusing him because she was angry that he left after he did not like the way she was treating him.

An arrest warrant for Terhaar was issued for the following crimes: sexual assault and first-degree assault, both of which are felonies. FOX31 reached out to Terhaar’s attorney for comment on Tuesday and will update this story with any response.
