    Katie Holmes is one of those celebrities I always look to for accessible, chic outfit ideas, as she’s photographed trekking around NYC on pretty much a weekly basis. Any guesses?

    Wearing corduroy pants in the winter isn’t exactly ground-breaking, but they’re still worthy of being reminded of from time to time. I think they deserve a permanent spot in a winter basics wardrobe, as you can pretty much wear them with anything you wear with jeans. But they’ll keep you even warmer and they’ll add a chic retro twist to your winter outfits.

    We’re used to seeing photos of Katie Holmes either walking the streets of NYC in stylish outfits, or on the red carpet. But this time, she was photographed at the airport, making a post-Christmas return to the city. And as is always the case with Holmes, she was dressed in a practical outfit that was as stylish as it was wearable.

    As someone who prefers to wear jeans over leggings or sweatpants to the airport, I love seeing a celebrity travel outfit that includes jeans that are actually comfortable. The instances of celebs wearing stiff, high-waisted jeans to the airport are well-documented, but Holmes opted for a pair of loose wide-leg jeans in a light wash. Her jeans are a now-sold-out pair by Wandler but there are plenty of similar styles on the market to choose from (see below).

    Baggy jeans, another style in the loose-jean family, were obviously the reigning denim trend of 2022 (with low-rise being a close second), but wide-leg jeans like Holmes’s are a classic style that has been a part of many excellent airport outfits over the years.     Why else would she step out to the 2022 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in New York City wearing the most quintessential Y2K combo: a strapless mini-dress over frayed blue jeans?

    You heard it right — the jeans-over-dress combo is back. In the year of our Lord 2022. And even though we swore we wouldn’t let low-rise denim return, it’s here. And now, inevitably, we must reap what we have sown. The harvest: the dregs of Y2K fashion.

    It’s giving Disney Channel. It’s giving Teen Vogue Party. It’s giving Y2K at its peak. She would know! She was a style icon in the early 2000s, and she’s not letting us forget it.

    Katie is no stranger to a viral outfit photo. She single-handedly made that Khaite cardigan set go viral simply by hailing a cab — the photo that launched a thousand knit bras. And lest we forget: she survived a marriage to Tom Cruise. She can do anything! But should she?

    The era: 2000-2007. The jeans: baggy, frayed. To recreate this look, go vintage. Or vintage-inspired. A straight leg cut and a teeny distressed edge is the key to nailing this 2000s vibe.

    I don’t know if Katie Holmes planned to make headlines after her red carpet appearance this week, but make headlines she did. She looked beautiful for her appearance at iHeartRadio Z100’s Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden, and she was also wearing an outfit that was straight out of her early-2000s playbook. 

    Back in the early 2000s, Holmes was constantly busy with appearances, as one is when they’re the star of a hit TV show (Dawson’s Creek, of course). The outfit she wore to Jingle Ball took a page right out of her Joey Potter era, and I have the photos to prove it.

    For the very recent occasion, Holmes wore a TOVE strapless number that was technically a top but could pass as a mini dress (especially on someone on the shorter side). While she may have been party-ready on the top, she was errand-ready on the bottom, opting for baggy jeans and black sneakers. But somehow, she made it work and looked every bit as cool as she always does. 

    Just for fun, I went back into the Getty Images archives and found a couple of instances back in the early 2000s in which she wore similar tops with jeans on the red carpet.
