The grand and tragic  love story has been turned into an opera. Elizabeth Coppinger, a pioneering woman who made a name for herself in tech turned her talents and composed her first. The legendary tragic tale which eventually became a triangle with Jackie Kennedy Onassis is a saga for the ages. She decided this story needs to be framed in the grand, dramatic setting of opera to allow it to be memorialized in the perfect setting.

    Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis shared one of the 20th century’s most passionate and tragic love affairs. Callas, the world’s reigning opera diva, met the Greek shipping magnate in 1957, and their magnetic connection defied their respective marriages. For over a decade, they lived a glamorous, tempestuous romance filled with luxury, jealousy, and devotion. Onassis was the love of Callas’s life, though he ultimately married Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968—a betrayal that shattered her. Despite this, Callas never stopped loving him. Their affair remains legendary—a tale of power, passion, and heartbreak between two icons who burned too brightly to last.

    Maria Callas, born in New York and raised in Greece, was one of the most celebrated and influential opera singers of the 20th century, Think Taylor Swift famous. Her extraordinary voice, dramatic intensity, and command of bel canto roles transformed opera performance. She rose to fame in the late 1940s and 1950s with triumphs at La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and Covent Garden in London. Known for roles in Norma, Tosca, and Lucia di Lammermoor, she redefined operatic artistry. After her affair with Onassis, her career declined amid vocal struggles and emotional turmoil, yet her legend and recordings endure timelessly.

    Experience the first act of La Callas at performances in Seattle December 5th and 7th to celebrate the famed diva’s birthday. The legendary tragic tale which eventually became a triangle with Jackie Kennedy Onassis is a saga for the ages. Now, new opera writer Elizabeth Coppinger has transformed it into an opera. After a career in technology and community activities, she decided this story needs to be framed in the grand, dramatic setting of opera to allow it to be memorialized in the perfect setting.

    The story tells of Maria Callas and her scandalous relationship with Aristotle Onassis, then one of the world’s richest men. Tragically, their ill-fated affair collapsed in betrayal and heartbreak with Onassis’ surprise marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968. Their romance was during the height of the glamorous “jet set” and played across the world in locations like Rome, Athens, London, and New York.  This was the era when large yachts, titled guests, private planes and more were all new, and set the very rich apart. The papers ate it up and broke Callas heart.
    In a clever twist, Coppinger tells the timeless tale via the Greek gods, Zeus and Hera.  They mythical couple are also the main stars in the new Netflix series Kaos starring Jeff Goldblum and Janet McTeer.

    This new English-language opera by award-winning composer, Clint Borzoni, and new librettist Coppinger, is being workshopped in NYC.  Borzoni has created for La Callas a lush, melodic score evoking the sweeping passion and drama of Callas’ legendary life and career. Her story is contemporary. The story highlights the diva’s struggle with society’s bias against strong women and she was cast by the press as an egotistical diva rather than the dedicated and brilliant artist like her male contemporaries. She was expected to choose between her career and personal happiness, still a familiar dilemma for women today. The new film, Maria, starring Angelina Jolie, and the recent worldwide centenary celebrations of Callas’ birth show the public’s continuing fascination with Callas’ life and legacy.

    The Act I workshop performance of La Callas will be on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall in New York City.   Tickets are available from the Merkin Hall Ticket Office.

    Netflix‘s Kaos takes on Greek mythology with a modern twist. However, it continues to give homage to the Greek language when familiar words are heard in the background or over conversation.

    Kaos stars Jeff Goldblum as the all-powerful Greek God Zeus, who discovers that the end of the world is near after he finds a wrinkle on his face. “This is a god with “trust issues,” Goldblum explained to Tudum. “It’s a magic carpet to disaster.” Zeus’ old friend (and now enemy) Prometheus (Stephen Dillane) is planning on his downfall, and the rest of the Greek God Patheneon is falling apart with their duties. Four mortals Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), Orpheus (Killian Scott), Caeneus (Misia Butler), and Ari (Leila Farzad) are connected cosmically in an epic battle against Zeus, but will the fate of the world depend on it?

    Series showrunner Charlie Covell explained to Netflix’s Tudum that viewers don’t need to know much about Greek mythology to be immersed in the world of Kaos. “I never want people to feel they can’t watch the show unless they’ve done their homework, because that’s just terrible and very kind of exclusionary,” Covell says. “But I would love for people who have read [the Greek myths] to be like, ‘Easter egg, Easter egg, Easter egg.’ ” 

    So is ‘Vero’ one of those Easter eggs? Let’s examine below.

    What does ‘Vero’ mean in Kaos?

    Vero means ‘In Truth’ in Latin. Throughout the season, you’ll hear people saying “Vero” at the end of their sentences, which is just an affirmation of their devotion to the Greek Gods. In some cases, crowds will chant it back.

    In some of the the background music, there’s a successive chant with the words, “Celestis, Divinitus, Insania, Vero.” The first three words mean “Heavenly, Divine, and Insanity.” Specifically, in the final scene of season 1, the music creeps up as Zeus finds Prometheus sitting on his throne. After attempting to shoo his frenemy, Zeus finds out that his powers don’t work anymore and that he has a paper cut, proving a recent dream was actually a premonition.

    We humans tend to have profound difficulty conceptualizing gods that are greater than us, but at least the Greeks seemed to have some self-awareness about that back when they were brain-trusting their mythology.

    Enter Kaos, the incoming Netflix show that looks all but ready to honor this shortcoming of ours by doubling down on it in the least subtle way a showrunner ever could, and what better way to underline such intentions than to cast Jeff Goldblum as Zeus in this dark comedy fantasy romp?

    Hardly any, is the answer you’re looking for. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

    We got our first full teaser for Kaos that gives us a bit more insight into the show. Goldblum is very clearly disgruntled god about town and maybe don’t make him angry…

    Kaos follows the rather hellish life and times of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods whose precarious hubris has led him to declare the imminence of the apocalypse after discovering a wrinkle on his forehead. As his paranoia against his mythological colleagues grows, it’s not long before six regular humans enter the equation, each of them connected to a rapture-specific prophecy, and who find themselves drawn to each other as some twisty conspiracies involving the gods begin to bare their teeth.

    Who stars in Kaos?

    As previously mentioned, Jeff Goldblum stars as Zeus in what is perhaps the most inspired decision in the history of television casting. Furthermore, other such Greek icons as Hera, Poseidon, Hades, Orpheus, Medusa, and Dionysus will be brought to life by Janet McTeer, Cliff Curtis, David Thewlis, Killian Scott, Debi Mazar, and Nabhaan Rizwan, respectively.

    Aurora Perrineau, Misia Butler, Leila Farzad, Rakie Ayola, and Stanley Townsend also star in the project helmed by The End of the F***ing World scribe Charlie Covell.

    When does Kaos release?

    At the time of writing, there’s currently no release date or window for Kaos‘ premiere, although considering we’ve gotten a look at some footage already, that announcement can’t be terribly far off, so stay tuned!
