    Arrie Flathouse took her first steps to Taylor Swift’s hit song “Tim McGraw.”

    The pop icon was a constant part of the now 16-year-old Arrie’s childhood as she grew up in the Houston area with two older sisters who adored Swift. Arrie came to love Swift, too, dressing up as her for Halloween and listening to her albums.

    Arrie never got much into football, though, despite having a mom, Kara, who spent her weekends tuned into college and NFL games. That included games played by the Chiefs since Kara, like Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, is a Texas Tech alum. Despite Kara’s attempts to get her daughters interested, football never clicked with Arrie, so Kara usually spent those weekend afternoons watching games alone.

    But that changed last summer after Arrie saw clips of the “New Heights” podcast, on which one of the hosts, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, described his attempts to give Swift his number via a friendship bracelet.

    The little exchange had quite an impact on Arrie.

    Already a devoted listener to the podcast, Kara got so excited when her daughter started talking about the Kelce clips. Over the following months, social media worked its magic, and by the time Swift showed up to her first Chiefs game in late September, Arrie was tuned in.

    “This is crazy,” Arrie said. “This isn’t Swifties’ theories. This is for real. So that’s when I started watching football because I was like, ‘If she’s gonna be at the games, I’ve got to see her.’”

    Arrie has since tuned into pretty much every Chiefs game, embracing not only the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce romance but the entire Kelce family. She’s watched Amazon Prime’s documentary about his brother, Eagles center Jason Kelce, became a devoted listener of the Kelce brothers’ “New Heights” podcast and even started watching Eagles games.

    “Even if Taylor is not there, I think I enjoy (the game) a lot more,” said Arrie, whose parents promised to buy her a Travis Kelce jersey soon.

    Kara smiles listening to her daughter describe her newfound interest in a sport she bonded over with her own dad. Kara doesn’t want to push too hard, but she loves it when she sees Arrie’s head pop over the stair banister if she hears football on the TV. Much to Kara’s delight, that tends to lead to quality time together watching games with her daughter. It’s also led to questions about the sport itself.

    “It’s been really fun for me,” said Kara, who posted a viral video in the fall about her glee that Swift finally converted her daughter to a football fan. “I love it.”

    The Flathouse family isn’t an anomaly. Far from it. Swift’s arrival on the football stage has led to countless stories of football-loving parents bonding with their Swiftie kids. Even Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt is hearing them.

    “I frequently have dads come up to me and say, ‘My 10- and 12-year-old daughters never used to watch football, but they now tell me anytime the Kansas City Chiefs are playing to tell them so they can watch,” Hunt said this week in Las Vegas, where the Chiefs are preparing to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. “I was at a function a little over a week ago and I had a woman, probably in her mid-20s, who came up to me, introduced herself as a Swiftie and told me her entire family is Dallas Cowboys fans and that she used to not follow football at all, but now she’s all-in on the Kansas City Chiefs. I think there are a lot of examples like that out there.”

    One story just like that belongs to Todd Kale, a Cowboys fan who posted a now-viral video of his 11-year-old daughter Briley reciting football facts from the couch.

    The Kale family lives near Houston. They’re Cowboys season-ticket holders and their five daughters love going to games. They know the big-name Dallas players but never really watched the game with their dad, instead embracing the atmosphere of a game day or just enjoying eating hot wings, their Sunday ritual, rather than engaging much with the actual football.

    But Briley, the middle child of the family, grew up a Swift fan thanks to her older sisters and has passed the love for Swift onto her younger siblings. Todd wasn’t sure how Briley first learned of Swift’s connection to Kelce, but a few months back, he was watching a Sunday night game with his wife and realized Briley was in the living room. She started asking questions: What’s a safety? What’s a cornerback? How many points is a touchdown worth?

    It didn’t take long for Todd to realize where this was coming from.

    “It definitely intrigued her that somebody she really likes is now involved in something I really like,” Todd said.

    Briley has since watched more Chiefs games and has picked up knowledge about the sport itself, absorbing it all.

    “It’s every dad’s dream. … She liked football before, but I think she just liked the experience of it,” Todd said. “Now she’s learning more about the game.”

    Kelce aims to add ‘some hardware’ following Swift’s Grammy success

    Swift has been a storyline all season — with Kansas City winning nine of the 12 games she has attended — and the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run has only ratcheted that up a higher level.

    “There’s no doubt her being a fan has put a more intense focus on the team than we would’ve had otherwise,” Hunt said. “It has opened up the fan base to a whole new demographic that we really didn’t have in young women. You’ve seen that in a lot of ways, specifically our TV ratings. They are much higher because of Taylor Swift being a part of the team, as Kelce says.”

    Hunt’s not wrong about the TV ratings. Not only did the average number of viewers tuning into Chiefs regular-season prime-time games increase this season from the previous two (a 39.4 percent jump compared to last year alone), but so did the percentage of female viewers (up 3 percent), according to Nielsen. And that viewership jump has carried over to the postseason. The Chiefs’ divisional-round win over Buffalo averaged 50.4 million viewers, making it the most-watched divisional-round or wild-card game ever. The Chiefs’ victory over the Ravens was the most-watched AFC Championship Game ever, with an average of 55.47 million viewers tuning in.

    The league’s social media team has played a big role in ushering in new audiences, as well. The team embraced Swift’s first game in September, trying to be conscious of all of the new eyeballs on their feeds while not going overboard, said Ian Trombetta, NFL SVP of social and influencer marketing.

    That theme has remained consistent throughout the season, though the strategy varies depending on the platform, Trombetta said. With some of those that skew younger, like TikTok and Snapchat, there’s more reason to embrace Swifties with their posts.

    “We’re also thinking about this in the sense of not just what we’re posting on social media, but also how our partners are covering it,” Trombetta said. “So that could be a broadcast partner. That could be a sponsor, etc. And when you take all that into totality, it can get pretty, pretty hot just in terms of the amount of coverage. And, so for us, I think it really was a reminder for us to take a broader view of all the coverage and understand our role in it.”

    Swift’s emergence onto the NFL scene has helped lead to record-setting engagement, with triple-digit growth in consumption across various platforms, per Trombetta. Their audience continues to skew younger and diversify in male/female split as well, he said.

    Swift’s Super Bowl attendance is up in the air thanks to her Eras Tour stop in Tokyo, If Swift is there to watch Kelce’s Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers, the league social team will devote some time to her arrival and reactions, but with so much happening around the Super Bowl between the football and the spectacle, it won’t just be the Taylor Swift social feed.

    “I think we’ve gotten to the point now though, that by and large, it’s been a very celebratory thing,” Trombetta said. “And certainly a positive for the league, a positive for the Chiefs, a positive for the Kelce family, and obviously with Travis, and I think it’s been a positive for Taylor as well. So we’ll continue to lean into it in different ways, but also be respectful of their relationship. So not invading any privacy and looking to take cues where some of the lines might be on the amount of coverage and also keep the game front and center. That’s really important for us.”

    Still, there’s no doubt the league has brought in new fans thanks to Swift, as the Flathouse and Kale families can attest.

    The Flathouse family on Sunday will be hosting an “I’m in My Super Bowl Era” themed party in honor of the Chiefs-Swift crossover.

    There will be a giant friendship bracelet garland along with appropriately themed food and drink, including an “electric” mocktail, in honor of a word Kelce likes to use a lot.

    But what about next season when the Swift magic may have run its course? It doesn’t matter for Arrie, who plans on still tuning into NFL games.

    “I feel like I’m hooked now,” Arrie said.

    SAN FRANCISCO — Las Vegas is the hub of sports betting but there’s a lot of friendly wagers being made for Super Bowl LVIII, including one in the Bay Area that combines football, beer and charity.

    21st Amendment Brewery is always game when it comes to making a friendly wager.

    Folks here remember the bitter 49ers’ Super Bowl loss four years ago and they hope to get some payback on Sunday.

    “We had to give them lots of beer and we had to wear Kansas City gear. I think that was the worst part of it all,” recalled 21st Amendment’s Vee Feyhling.

    In 2024, 21st Amendment was quick to respond when Boulevard Brewing Company of Kansas City suggested another bet.

    “Four years later, here we are again and they said they don’t want to bring this back up and I was like ‘oh yes we do!’” Feyhling said.

    “We like having fun with our fans. We like supporting other breweries and the Super Bowl just gives us another opportunity to do that in a really fun way,” said Adam Hall with Boulevard Brewing Company.

    While there will be beers, swag and bragging rights on the line, there really are no losers in this friendly wager. Each brewery has vowed to make a donation to a local charity.

    “We are supporting the 49ers Foundation. They are a great organization, one that helps youth and it’s a great opportunity to give back to them,” Feyhling said.

    Hall added, “We’re going to ask for a charitable donation for Win for KC. It’s a local nonprofit that supports and empowers women in sports.”

    21st Amendment is feeling confident that the 49ers can close the deal this time around but Chiefs Kingdom is certain KC will be coming home with another ring.

    “Did you watch the last game? Because that’s what everybody thought until the fourth quarter. I would say, even in Kansas City, no one’s going to turn their TVs off until the game is over,” Hall said.

    While there may be a debate on who will take home the Lombardi Trophy, the bet between the breweries is a win-win situation — not only for the charities but also for the breweries who will get to expose their brand to customers in a different region.

    “You know this rivalry with a friendly wager — it’s all about beer and helping out charity and just fun,” Feyhling said.

    “I think it’s just indicative of craft breweries at large. Just how well we get along and how we can root against each other in the game but, when all is said and done, we’re going to drink a beer whether it’s theirs or ours and we’ll cheer the champs,” Hall concluded.

    What colors are each team wearing?

    The Chiefs will wear their red jerseys, while the 49ers will wear white.

    Each season, the winners of the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC) alternate between which conference representative will be considered the home team in the Super Bowl. The home team gets the first pick over the away team of which color jersey they will wear.

    The Chiefs represent the AFC and are considered the home team this year.

    Kansas City also wore red while the Niners wore white when they met in Super Bowl LIV.

    How much does it cost to attend the game?

    Prices for a seat at Allegiant Stadium on Super Bowl Sunday start no lower than $5,000 across multiple ticket vendors.

    Keep in mind these are the lowest ticket prices. The average price of a ticket ranges from $9,000-$12,000 across multiple vendor sites.

    KCRA 3’s Del Rodgers said that when he played in Super Bowl XXIII, ticket prices were $100.

    Both teams’ road back to the Super Bowl

    Often in team sports, greatness can be taken for granted.

    Each season ends with just one champion, they’re celebrated for a few months, and then the pressure to do it again is immediately back on as if it never happened.

    No teams have won more playoff games than the Chiefs (13) and 49ers (8) since the 2019 postseason. The writing was probably always on the wall for them to meet in the Super Bowl again, but you wouldn’t know it based on the discourse around both teams since last spring.

    The Niners entered this season with a quarterback controversy on their hands.

    Brock Purdy was thrown into the fire in 2022 as a rookie and helped San Francisco make a push to the NFC Championship Game, but he tore a ligament in his elbow in the first quarter and the team got blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles.

    Purdy, the last pick in his draft, went undefeated as a starter in the 2022 regular season and brought the team within one game of the Super Bowl, but ahead of the 2023 season, he was coming off an injury to his throwing arm and the 49ers still had to figure out what to do with Trey Lance, who they drafted in 2021.

    Purdy and Lance competed for the starting quarterback spot in training camp. After months of media speculation, 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear Purdy had won the starting spot, telling Sports Illustrated in August: “He would have to melt in practice to lose [the job].”

    Trey Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys weeks before the season and the Niners came out the gates on a roll.

    The Niners won their first five games, lost the next three and then won eight straight to lock up the No. 1 seed in the NFC before losing to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18 (when most of the Niners key players were resting for the playoffs).

    Despite a 13-4 season where San Francisco blew their opponents out more often than not, some still poked holes at their success.

    Purdy was named a finalist for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. Still, some argued he was being carried by his supporting cast, particularly Christian McCaffrey, who is also a finalist for MVP.

    The 49ers defense is loaded with talent, but they weren’t as statistically dominant as they have been in years past.

    In the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions, the Niners trailed 24-7 at halftime and it looked like the team was going to fall a game short of reaching the Super Bowl for the third consecutive season.

    But in the second half, the script flipped.

    The Niner defense got stops, Purdy made plays and his supporting cast did too. Now all the doubters are going to have to wait a week.

    As for Kansas City, the reigning Super Bowl champs have been facing doubt since the first game of the season, a loss to the Detroit Lions at home.

    Americans split over who they want to win the big game this year. In the West they tend to be rooting for the 49ers, in the Midwest more for the Chiefs.

    For just over half of the country, it doesn’t matter who wins the 2024 Super Bowl, and this group is more interested in the parties and the commercials than the game itself. Which team wins matters more to football fans.

    And for some, a little betting is part of the fun. About one in five U.S. adults say they are at least somewhat likely to wager some money on this year’s Super Bowl. And football fans are more than four times as likely as non-fans to say they’ll do so.

    After the game, the parties and the ads, some might want a day off. About a third of football fans — particularly younger fans — would like the day after the Super Bowl to be a federal holiday.

    Super Bowl LVIII pitting defending NFL champions the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers is set for Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

    The game, scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, will be broadcast live on CBS and stream on Paramount+, with a kid- and family-focused simulcast on Nickelodeon and a Spanish-language broadcast on Univision in the network’s first-ever national broadcast of an NFL game. It will also be available in Spanish on Vix.

    A livestream is also available on CBS through DirecTV Stream, which offers a five-day free trial. The game will also be available on mobile via NFL+.

    The game is a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl won by the Chiefs, who will be playing in their fourth Super Bowl in five years; they lost in 2021 to Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers before beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 last year.

    That matchup drew an average of 115.1 million viewers, making it the most-watched Super Bowl across platforms of all time.

    The 49ers are looking for their first Super Bowl win since 1994.

    This year, the famed Super Bowl Halftime Show will be headlined by eight-time Grammy winner Usher, coming a year after Rihanna’s showcase became the most-watched of all time with more than 121 million viewers.     In 2016, Ryan Reynolds‘ first Deadpool movie scored a huge marketing touchdown at the Super Bowl when using the weekend of the big game to hold a number of promotional events, culminating with a final trailer spot released during the showdown between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers.

    Two weeks later, the irreverent R-rated pic turned into a box office sensation and launched a new superhero franchise for 20th Century, which was later bought by Disney, home of Marvel Studios. If you’re the betting kind, odds are good that Marvel and Disney will use this year’s Super Bowl on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas to drop the first trailer for its untitled Deadpool threequel, which hits theaters July 26 in North America. And don’t be surprised if the mercurial Reynolds — also a proven marketer — suits up himself in some fashion.

    The legacy Hollywood studios have long used TV’s most-watched live event of the year to advertise their upcoming wares, but have cut back notably in recent years because of soaring costs. This year, CBS is charging $7 million for a 30-second spot, according to numerous reports. A popular option is the official pregame show, where it can cost half as much to buy time for a movie ad.

    Studios are being coy as to their Super Bowl plans this year, although those who are ponying up the big bucks are certainly pleased that the Kansas City Chiefs, who will go up against the San Francisco 49ers, provide an added bonus in terms of ratings because of Taylor Swift, who is dating Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce (her presence at games this year has resulted in a notable spike in female viewership).

    There’s also a Deadpool connection; Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, are friends of Swift’s and have attended Kansas City games this season.

    The spot for Deadpool 3, directed by Shawn Levy and co-starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, is likely to air during the game, but Disney’s declining comment on any and all plans. Another Disney movie that could be advertised on Sunday is 20th Century’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The reboot stomps into cinemas May 10.

    Paramount, whose sister network CBS is carrying the game, is sure to advertise Bob Marley: One Love — which opens on Valentine’s Day — A Quiet Place: Day One and IF, directed by John Krasinski and starring Reynolds (not a typo). In the past, Paramount has often used the pregame.

    Universal will have a big presence as well. The studio is believed to have bought time for summer event pics Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, Twisters and Illumination’s Despicable Me 4, as well as spring tentpole Kung Fu Panda 4, from DreamWorks Animation.

    The year is 2045. Fourth week in February. After a grueling 21-week regular season and five rounds of playoffs, the Super Bowl matchup is set: Buffalo Bills versus London Jaguars. The NFL is anticipating 130 million viewers will stream the game on Netflix, which serves as the exclusive home of the Super Bowl following a multibillion-dollar deal the company signed with the league in 2040.

    Those who don’t have a subscription to the streaming service can pay $149 for a one-month trial that includes access to the game through one of Netflix’s 10 Megacast Super Bowl feeds. One popular Megacast option will be the Legends Room, where retired players Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and C.J. Stroud interact live with viewers while watching the game. Adam Amin, Greg Olsen and Laura Rutledge will call the game on Netflix’s main NFL channel.

    Sound far-fetched? Maybe it would have been 10 years ago. While a thought exercise on the NFL making the Super Bowl a pay-per-view event is nothing new, what is new is the era we are living in. Last month’s first-ever exclusive, live-streamed NFL playoff game on Peacock felt like a seismic moment.

    Peacock paid $110 million to air the Kansas City Chiefs’ 26-7 win over the Miami Dolphins in the AFC wild-card round, an attempt to add to its tally of 30 million subscribers. Antenna, a research firm that tracks streaming data, estimated that Peacock had 2.8 million sign-ups over a three-day window around the wild-card game, which averaged 23 million viewers. It was the single biggest subscriber acquisition moment ever measured by Antenna.

    Is the Super Bowl behind a paywall an inevitability in the next 40 years or so?

    “Given the rate of cord-cutting is over 7 percent, or five million homes gone every year, the odds are very good that the Super Bowl will be on a streaming platform in ‘our’ lifetime,” said Michael Nathanson, the co-founder and senior managing director of research firm MoffettNathanson, which provides trends in media, communications and technology to institutional investors.

    NFL officials have repeatedly stated that the league is committed to broadcast television and the broad distribution of games. Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s executive vice president of media distribution, told reporters last month, including The Athletic, that “you can’t reach 190 million people throughout the course of the year without having very broad distribution of your content, and that’s always been a bedrock for us. … Every one of our games is on broadcast television, at least in their market, and probably 90 percent of our games are on broadcast as their core platform. For us, it remains really important.”

    Sean McManus, the longtime chairman of CBS Sports, who is retiring from his post later this year, noted that such a conversation can’t happen until after this current set of NFL media rights expires. The league’s media rights agreements with CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN and Amazon are worth about $110 billion and run through the 2033 season.

    “There’s no immediate worry,” McManus said. “(NFL commissioner) Roger Goodell has been very upfront that broad distribution is part of the reason the NFL is successful as it is. Yes, the NFL expanded with some games on Peacock, including a playoff game. … But when you have 56 million people watching the AFC Championship Game (on CBS), that’s a great success story. I can’t speak for Netflix, Amazon or Apple whether it makes business sense for them to pay hundreds of millions for a playoff game, but I do know linear television is extremely important to the success of the NFL.”

    Along with McManus, David Levy, the former president of Turner Sports and now the co-CEO of Horizon Sports & Experiences, a sports marketing agency and consultancy, also believes that the Super Bowl will remain on broadcast, free-to-air television for years to come.

    “Broadcast and free-to-air is still the largest reach vehicle,” Levy said. “You’re always building your next generation of fans, and they want the place to get the largest reach. Thirty years from now? I can’t answer that because I don’t know who will be the commissioner of the NFL and who would be owning these teams.”

    Levy was very positive about the NFL product appearing on streaming services. But he noted an important point: Any streaming service airing the Super Bowl exclusively would need its own production capabilities and enough of a proof of concept with production elements where the NFL would feel confident to put its most important property in their hands. That’s not something Netflix or Apple have at the moment.

    “Everyone expects to turn on network television and see a Super Bowl,” said Tracy Wolfson, the NFL sideline reporter who is calling Sunday’s game for CBS. “I think you alienate those that cannot watch it. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more playoff games there, but I think when it comes to the Super Bowl, it is how many eyeballs and making sure it is available for all to watch.”

    William Mao, a senior vice president of global media rights at Octagon, a sports and entertainment agency, believes we are not likely in the next 20 to 25 years to see a Super Bowl airing exclusively on a streaming service in the U.S. if free-to-air TV penetration (remains larger than any single subscription video-on-demand base. He said his answer would change only when (or if) a paywall streamer has the subscriber reach capacity near to the free-to-air penetration of today.

    “So long as the Super Bowl continues to be the most-watched live TV broadcast by a wide margin, it will remain available on free-to-air in some shape or form,” Mao predicted. “The aggregation of 100 million-plus viewers on a single broadcast remains too big of an advertising draw to exclusively paywall, and all signs point to the continued upswing in Super Bowl ratings and ad rates via its current distribution.

    “Could there come a point in the future where something else knocks the Super Bowl off the top perch? Sure, never say never. But right now the gap between the first and second most-watched broadcasts in America is over 60 million viewers. So why would the NFL upset its own dominant and extremely lucrative standing?”

    Mao pointed out that the Super Bowl is unique because it draws in tons of casual viewers. People watch the game for a variety of reasons, including the commercials and halftime music acts. He wondered if top music performers would continue to perform the halftime show at little cost if the broadcast was behind a paywall and not guaranteed to reach the same-sized audience. There would also be some folks in Congress with an interest if the NFL headed down this road.

    This discussion feels much more relevant in 2024 because of the Peacock game. We don’t know how many new subscribers will stick with Peacock long-term, and the game was not 100 percent exclusively streaming because it appeared on free-to-air television in Kansas City and Miami. But the NFL placed one of its premium inventory games behind a paywall.

    “The Peacock number was solid, and the broadcast provided an informative reference point for future NFL games that get similarly distributed,” Mao said. “For example, will a 40 percent lesser ad load become the norm for streamer games? But there are still many moves between shifting one of many wild-card games to a streamer versus moving the biggest game of the year. In my view, the Super Bowl should be one of the last things to go exclusively behind a paywall in the NFL’s portfolio.”

    It’s not easy to come up with a price point for a Super Bowl behind a paywall. Is there a ceiling for what is far and away the most popular communal TV experience for Americans every year (as well as close to nine million Canadians)? Going back to the hypothetical lede of this article: Say Netflix got 30 million new signups for a Super Bowl experience at $149. That’s nearly $4.5 billion. That doesn’t include advertising revenue. There would be a ton of subscriber churn post-Super Bowl, for sure, but there would also be those who stay with the product and then pay for the annual subscription.

    “I don’t think the question is about a single-game price point,” Mao said. “If the Super Bowl were to have an exclusive streaming future, it would first more likely be as part of a set of broader rights.”

    When I posed the pricing point question to Nathanson, he said it was hard to figure out a definitive number.

    “That’s a good question,” Nathanson said. “How many people paid $6 for a wild-card game pay-per-view on Peacock? It would obviously be multiples (more than that).”

    We are unlikely to see the NFL head down this road in the short- or medium-term. But ask yourself if, back in 2014, you imagined that you would ever have to pay to watch an NFL playoff game.

    Fred Gaudelli has been the lead producer of the Super Bowl television broadcast on seven different occasions. If you are into Roman numerals, Gaudelli has produced Super Bowls XXXVII, XL, XLIII, XLVI, XLIX, LII, and LVI. He has been in the production truck for some of the most exciting NFL title games in history, including Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, which featured New England Patriots rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler intercepting Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson at the goal line with 20 seconds left to seal New England’s 28-24 come-from-behind win over Seattle. That game averaged 114.4 million viewers, which ranked as the most-viewed Super Bowl in U.S. television history before last year’s Super Bowl took the title.

    During his 33 seasons as the lead producer for an NFL prime-time TV game, which included stops at ABC, ESPN, NBC, and Amazon Prime Video, Gaudelli has produced innumerable NFL games with famous people in the stands. How would he feel about the prospect of Taylor Swift attending Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas on Feb. 11 if he were producing the game?

    “I would consider it a gift from the gods,” said Gaudelli.

    Gaudelli, because he lives on Planet Earth, knows that Swift crosses over into popular culture and that means the potential for more eyeballs on the product. (If you are a Swift hater, this piece is going to be a cruel summer for you, and it’s best to bail out now.)

    The challenge for the CBS Sports production team for Super Bowl LVIII, if Swift does make it to the game to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers — is navigating how often you incorporate images of the singer into the broadcast.

    The good news for the crew — led by producer Jim Rikhoff, director Mike Arnold and replay producer Ryan Galvin — is that they’ve had the Chiefs plenty this year, including the divisional-round game in Buffalo and AFC Championship Game in Baltimore, both of which Swift attended. It would be editorial dereliction not to show Swift during the game, but at the same time, how much do you show her?

    Then there is a new question: How much does the Super Bowl, a game that includes millions of people who are first-time football viewers for that season, impact your decisions on showing her?

    “Let’s go to the last Super Bowl I did,” Gaudelli said of the Los Angeles Rams’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Feb. 13, 2022. “We had (Rams quarterback) Matthew Stafford, his wife and kids. We had (Bengals quarterback) Joe Burrow’s parents and girlfriend. We had (Rams wide receiver) Cooper Kupp’s wife. We had (Rams offensive lineman) Andrew Whitworth’s wife and kids. We had (Bengals wide receiver) Ja’Marr Chase’s mom and dad. You have these shots set up because they’re part of the story of the game and because there’s five times as many people (watching) as you would get for a normal game. Right off the bat, you’re already thinking about who’s at the game, and in L.A. we had celebrities like LeBron James and Jay-Z. (Director) Drew Esocoff was cutting those shots during the game. So when Stafford threw a touchdown pass, there’s a shot of Stafford’s wife. Burrow is on the ground writhing in pain? You see his mom and dad and his girlfriend with the ultimate look of concern.

    “Now you have Taylor Swift, who also is someone that has a direct connection to the game because she’s a significant other of one of the stars of a team. Maybe you don’t show her for every Kelce sequence, but she’s going to be part of sequences when he makes a play.”

    The airtime Swift has gotten so far during NFL games is much less than some think. New York Times writer Benjamin Hoffman wrote a great piece this week that chronicled “the dissonance between how many times Swift has been shown versus how many times people seem to think she was shown.” He reported Swift was on-screen for a duration of less than 32 seconds in most games, with a high of 1 minute and 16 seconds for Peacock’s coverage of the Chiefs against the Miami Dolphins on Jan. 13.

    “You can’t help but put her on the air,” said Tracy Wolfson, who will be on the Chiefs’ sideline for the Super Bowl. “I can’t tell you the amount of dads who have come up to me and said, ‘My daughter is now watching football because of Taylor Swift.’ I mean, why wouldn’t you take advantage or capitalize on it? It’s great for the NFL and it’s great for ratings.”

    Fox’s broadcast of the Chiefs’ game against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 24 set the template for Swift coverage because the network had to figure out everything on the fly. Lead producer Richie Zyontz said that his crew had no official word from the NFL or the Chiefs that Swift would be in attendance. (That changed in later weeks; Rikhoff knew the night before the Chiefs-Bills game Swift would be there.) They had to figure out the camera operators to use for the shots as well as how many to use.

    “We were in uncharted waters having been the first to deal with the situation,” Zyontz said this week, reflecting on that game. “Moderation came to mind immediately. As the season progressed there were too many knee-jerk reaction shots, yet those were the shots that were talked about and written about on Monday. For the Super Bowl, there will be millions of new viewers because of her. Hopefully, good judgment will prevail. But for those who complain, come on, it’s a few seconds at a time, a few times a game. Is that really egregious?”

    The Super Bowl will be very different. If Swift is at the game, the Chiefs and the NFL will know what suite Swift will be sitting in at the stadium. So there will be no issues for the CBS broadcast production in finding her. CBS will put a request in to interview the singer. (If there is a prop bet on Swift being interviewed on camera, I’d bet no.) Gaudelli said a production’s best shot would be to go through the Chiefs who would relay the request to her through Kelce. You’d also make the ask to see if she wanted to do something off-camera.

    “We didn’t put that request in during the season because we didn’t think it rose to that level at that point,” said Gaudelli, who now serves as executive producer for NBC’s NFL coverage. “But, yeah, I think you put that in for the Super Bowl. You would try to get her on the pregame show.”

    Expect some guaranteed visuals in the postgame. If the Chiefs win, there will be a CBS camera operator following Kelce, for certain.

    “As a producer and director, he’s one of the main guys you want to see at the end of the game because he’s a major part of his dynasty if they win,” Gaudelli said. “So where he is, she will be. You don’t really have to go hunting too far. You’re going to be looking for number 87.”

    One person who is watching all of this with total amusement is Ian Eagle, the CBS broadcaster who was the first NFL national broadcaster to acknowledge the Swift-Kelce connection. On a Kelce touchdown call during Kansas City’s 17-9 win over Jacksonville on Sept. 17, Eagle cheekily tossed in a “Kelce finds a blank space for the score” line, referencing a Swift song title.

    “Back in September, there were some stories popping up linking Travis to Taylor, but it wasn’t getting major coverage at that point,” Eagle said. “When Kelce scored a touchdown in Jacksonville, I tossed in, ‘He finds a Blank Space for the score’ as a lark. I thought it was a cute throwaway line, not imagining for a moment it would blow up. I learned about the power of Swift in a hurry, and all of these months later the interest has grown exponentially with this Chiefs run. The NFL was already immense. But the relationship has somehow created even more buzz for the league. I’m just happy for those two crazy kids.”

    Stop whatever you’re doing right now because odds are that you’re not operating out of free will. That’s right. The Taylor Swift tune you’re mindlessly humming while scrolling past Super Bowl ads on the way to checking your email isn’t just a harmless earworm, at least according to the MAGA Mediaverse.

    It’s all part of a nefarious plot to subvert the 2024 election and hand it to Joe Biden.

    In a triangulation of paranoia, politics and pop music, right-wing influencers warned this week that superstar Swift and her co-conspirators, the NFL, are part of a widespread scheme to tank Donald Trump’s chances of winning back the White House.

    This carefully constructed web of deceit has been uncovered/fabricated by misinformation agents from Fox News to OAN to regional talk radio, many of whom have also spent the last few months convincing their followers that Swift is a Trojan Horse for the Democratic Party … and an undercover Pentagon operative.

    Fox News anchor Jesse Watters suggested earlier this month that Swift might be “a front for a covert political agenda.” Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh responded to Watters’ claim using a song title and lyric from the singer’s hit repertoire: “As for this conspiracy theory, we are going to shake it off.”

    Now Swift’s recent-ish romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is being held up as proof that the NFL is involved in a deep-six operation to sink the GOP come November. The football organization will supposedly do so by rigging the upcoming Super Bowl in favor of Kansas City, therefore giving Swift the perfect moment — the halftime show! — to announce her endorsement of the Democratic candidate.

    Big pharma also has their hand in the malfeasance, or is it the Clintons? Or both? Hard to keep track, but if we were to ask a Magic 8 Ball, as reliable a source as any on Fox, “It is decidedly so.”

    No matter that it doesn’t exactly require “Mission Impossible” coordination to make the above predictions come true: Swift, along with three-quarters of the entertainment industry, endorsed Joe Biden during the last election cycle and probably will do so again.

    The Chiefs won the 2023 Super Bowl, and this year’s game marks their fourth appearance in five years. Yet on Sunday after the Chiefs’ victory against the Baltimore Ravens, conservative media personality Mike Cripsi took the bold step of “Calling it now: KC wins, goes to Super Bowl, Swift comes out at the halftime show and ‘endorses’ Joe Biden with Kelce at midfield. … It’s all been an op since day one.”

    That’s “op” as in “psy-op,” a favored right-wing term for psychological manipulation. Former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy posted similar psy-op sentiments on X, to which the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, replied, “Exactly.”

    The idea that Swift and Kelce are players in a covert stratagem against Republicans is so facile that it feels generous to even label it a conspiracy theory on the same plane as, like, Area 51 and the staged moon landing. Yet folks have bitten, and now I’m writing about it.

    But choosing Taylor Swift as the figurehead of this imaginary attack on MAGA world is a curious about-face given that the billionaire songstress was one of the few pop sensations embraced by the right.

    The innocuous, feel-good singer emerged out of country music two decades ago and for much of her career was embraced by middle America as a wholesome, safe alternative to Beyoncé and other leading ladies who don’t resemble the Swiss Miss cocoa girl.

    So what changed? Just about everything, including the sad truth that everything is up for polarizing politicization when issues and policy are no longer at the core of a campaign or a party’s goals.

    Real issues — from the lack of affordable housing to a potential world war erupting out of the Middle East to the multiple criminal trials of the Republican front-runner — requiring discernment and serious thought. And since Trump’s GOP appears short on both, they’ve turned to another tried-and-true red herring: Attacking a powerful woman.

    Sports pundits and conservative personalities have been grousing for months about legions of Swifties suddenly attending Kansas City games, and even donning Kelce’s “87” jersey. How dare they!

    Kelce already was a questionable figure among right-wing sports fans for his role in a campaign promoted by Pfizer that encourages people to get a COVID-19 and flu shot at the same time. Now he’s dragged pop culture — a realm often criticized by conservative pundits as a petri dish of woke ideologies — into the sacred world of sports, barely covering his tracks from apolitical player to undercover leftist operative.

    Despite the latter narrative, it’s Swift’s fame that launched Kelce onto the worldwide stage. Her record-breaking Eras tour, and a blockbuster film enshrining the concerts, catapulted her from an omnipresent musical sensation to a global force. Her boyfriend of the moment naturally become part of the phenomenon.

    Sometimes a pop star really just is a pop star, and a football player really just is a football player. Even in an election year where fear of psy-ops and pop stardom collide.

    Everyone is talking about the intimate moments between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift after the AFC Championship game on Sunday. And rightfully so, of course. It’s so cute!

    But an older and deeper relationship was on full display, too. In a heartwarming moment, Travis’ big brother Jason Kelce, who plays center for the Philadelphia Eagles, got to greet his brother after his big win. And the moment turned so emotional!

    These two boys grew up just two years apart, with Travis always in the shadow of the more successful Jason. Then they both got into the NFL and found their own wins — eventually starting a podcast together in which fans got to join in as they teased and supported one another. And then they faced off in the Super Bowl, the first brothers ever to do so! So the history between these two as both brothers and ballers is so rich.

    In the video of their meetup on the field, Travis is obviously still pumped from the win. But just a couple key words from big bro nearly DESTROY the Big Yeti. Jason, his voice on the edge of cracking, says in his ear:

    “You’re the best in the world. I know it wasn’t easy. I know it was a hard year.”

    At that, Travis was visibly shaking to keep from crying. But the big guys patted each other with blows that would have snapped normal-sized men in half and somehow kept from breaking down ugly-crying right there on the field of victory. Jason continues:

    “And you guys f**king played through. Finish it for me. Finish this motherf**ker.”

    Travis responds, voice overpowering the tears:

    “Takin’ it to the mountain. One more f**king game. How about it?”

    To understand how much that means, that “finish it for me,” you have to understand this was probably Jason’s final year in the NFL (for more on that, see the fantastic documentary Kelce). He didn’t get to go out on a Super Bowl win, but cheering on his brother’s journey may be the next best thing. No wonder he went so wild the previous week!     She was there for the Chiefs’ AFC wild card game, the playoffs matchup against the Bills and the AFC championship win against the Ravens, but can Taylor Swift make it to the Super Bowl?

    The singer has concerts scheduled in Tokyo on Feb. 7, 8, 9 and 10 as part of her Eras Tour. Super Bowl LVIII will be played thousands of miles away at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Feb. 11. But with Tokyo 17 hours ahead of Las Vegas, the singer should be able to make it on time to watch Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers. Here’s how:

    Why the time difference matters

    Swift’s concert at the Tokyo Dome on Feb. 10 is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time and shows on her tour last about 4 hours. With the 17-hour time difference between Tokyo and Las Vegas, that means it will be about 1 a.m. Vegas time when she takes the stage in Tokyo.

    The cities are on opposite sides of the international date line, a sort of imaginary border that runs through the Pacific Ocean. It marks the boundary between calendar dates, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “When you cross the date line, you become a time traveler of sorts! Cross to the west and it’s one day later; cross back and you’ve ‘gone back in time,’” the agency says.

    Once the concert wraps up, it’s an approximately 13-hour flight from Tokyo to Las Vegas. With the time difference, Swift can arrive in Las Vegas on Saturday night with hours to spare before Sunday’s game starts. 

    So will Taylor Swift be at the Super Bowl?

    It’s possible, but she hasn’t said yet. The singer has another leg of her tour in Australia, beginning Feb. 16. 

    The flight from Vegas to Melbourne, where Swift will be performing, is approximately 18 hours. The time difference won’t be in her favor for this trip. 

    Melbourne is 19 hours ahead of Las Vegas. The Super Bowl is typically around 4 hours long. The game is set to start at 6:30 p.m. ET, or 3:30 p.m. local time in Vegas, on Feb. 11, which means the game should end around 7:30 p.m. local time. 

    Even with time factored in for possible celebrations if the Chiefs should win, Swift has plenty of time to make it to Melbourne, but there’s no doubt that it would be a busy week for the singer, filled with extensive travel.

    Taylor Swift has already logged plenty of miles traveling the world on her record-breaking Eras Tour, and she could soon add over 5,500 more on a one-way trip.

    That’s assuming the pop star makes the journey from the stage in Tokyo, where she’ll be performing on Feb. 10, to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs play in the Super Bowl the following day.

    With the Chiefs taking down the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday, Kansas City will be making its fourth Super Bowl appearance in five years. The Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49ers in the marquee matchup at 6:30 p.m. ET on Feb. 11.

    It’s fair to figure Swift will try to attend, considering she’s been a regular presence at Kelce’s games since the two debuted their relationship in the fall. But the travel schedule to catch the season finale will be a grind.

    With a nighttime show to close four days in Japan, Swift will have to hustle to get across the Pacific Ocean and back to the states in time for kickoff.

    So, can she make it?

    In short, yes. The 17-hour time difference works in her favor and means Swift could get to Las Vegas with plenty of time to spare.

    But there are considerations, such as weather patterns and the crowded Las Vegas airports on Super Bowl weekend, that could factor in.

    Here’s how it might work.

    Swift performs four shows at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on consecutive nights from Feb. 7-10 before heading to Australia for shows starting Feb. 16. Doors open at 4 p.m. local time for her Tokyo concert, with the show starting at 6 p.m. She typically opens her set about two hours after the scheduled start time. However, no openers have been announced for her Tokyo tour dates, meaning she could go on close to 6 p.m.

    Assuming that’s the case, and with her concerts lasting roughly three and a half hours, she would wrap the show around 9:30 p.m.

    If she leaves from Haneda Airport, which is the closest airport to the Tokyo Dome at a roughly 25-minute drive, with additional time to account for concert traffic and flight check-in, Swift could then be wheels up to Las Vegas an hour later.

    According to Business Insider, Swift has two multimillion-dollar private jets — a Dassault Falcon 7X and a Dassault Falcon 900 — that were heavily used during the U.S. leg of her Eras Tour.

    Falcon lists its 900LX model as having a range of 4,750 nautical miles. The 7X model has a longer range of 5,906 nautical miles. The distance between Haneda Airport and Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport, located near Allegiant Stadium, is 4,821 nautical miles (5,548 miles). So, for this exercise, it would make sense for Swift to opt for the 7X.

    An account manager at Paramount Business Jets — which offers worldwide private jet charter flights, including on the 7X, but is not affiliated with Swift’s plans — estimated the trip from Haneda Airport to Harry Reid International Airport would take about 10 to 10 1/2 hours on that aircraft.

    That means Swift could leave at 10:30 p.m. in Tokyo and, because of the time change, arrive around 4 p.m. in Las Vegas on Feb. 10, a full day before the game.

    However, the account manager, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said that as of Friday, there were no slots available to land in Las Vegas during Super Bowl weekend.

    “I have four clients who wanted to fly in for the Super Bowl and we had to cancel their trips because nobody is able to get the proper times to land in Las Vegas,” the account manager said.

    “The way that I got it explained by operators is that (they) don’t have any more availability at any of the Las Vegas airports that can receive a jet, whether it’s private or whether it’s commercial. When I say commercial, that’s someone renting an airplane to fly,” the account manager continued.

    The Paramount Business Jets account manager said the plans would have to have been in place “potentially a couple of months ago” to ensure the slots to land or depart in Las Vegas that weekend.

    “We know it’s going to be busy,” Harry Reid International Airport spokesperson Melissa DeFrank said. “We’ve been preparing for it for quite a while now, but … Super Bowl weekend is always busy in Las Vegas. We’re pretty well-prepared to handle a lot of traffic.”

    Airlines are also preparing for a surge in demand. American Airlines even coded their flights in honor of the Chiefs and Swift. American added seven direct flights from Feb. 8-13 arriving at either Harry Reid International Airport or Kansas City International Airport. Three of those are No. 15, named for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who wears jersey No. 15. Two are No. 1989, a nod to Swift’s chart-topping album. One is No. 87 — Kelce’s jersey number — and another is 1521, a combination of Mahomes and safety Mike Edwards’ jersey numbers.

    “The excitement surrounding this year’s sporting events has never been greater,” American Airlines said in a statement. “You could say that after (Sunday’s) games, we are in our football era, and we are thrilled to provide direct flights from Kansas City to Las Vegas. To our customers who are huge sports fans, look what you made us do.”

    It’s unclear whether Swift would still be able to land in Las Vegas. An email to her publicist regarding the plans was not immediately returned.

    Even if Swift is unable to land in Las Vegas, however, she could fly into Los Angeles — to either LAX or Van Nuys Airport — and drive the rest of the way.

    In that scenario, the flight would be roughly 45 minutes shorter to Los Angeles, meaning a flight of about 9 hours and 45 minutes. So Swift could theoretically make it to L.A. and through customs around 3:30 p.m. local time.

    A drive from LAX to Allegiant Stadium takes four to five hours, depending on stops and traffic. In that scenario, she’d still get to Vegas by 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, with lots of time for pregame activities.

    Or much-needed sleep.

    It’s official: Taylor Swift is heading to the Super Bowl.

    And by Taylor Swift, we mean her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who led his team to victory against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night and clinched a spot in Feb. 11’s big game.

    Swift was on hand Sunday night to celebrate the win, and was photographed embracing Kelce and his family on the field. But, with an Eras Tour date on Feb. 10 in Tokyo, will Swift be able to make it to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII?

    This was the question on many a Swiftie’s mind Sunday night, with fans taking to social media to try and figure out if the trip was possible. Some even referenced a 2001 episode of “The West Wing” as evidence, which mentions the international date line — something that will be greatly beneficial to Swift in this situation.

    Running between the South and North poles, the international date line serves as the boundary between one calendar day and the next. When traveling eastbound over the line, the date decreases by one day, while going west over the boundary moves things forward by one day. Luckily, Swift is traveling east — meaning that she’ll be able to perform her concert on Saturday night in Tokyo, get a full night of rest, and as long as the 13-hour flight leaves before 6 p.m. Japan Standard Time on Sunday, she’ll land in Las Vegas before kickoff at 3:30 p.m. PT. Also helping the matter is Swift’s private jet, which will ensure a non-stop flight on an international journey where that usually does not exist.

    Basically, Swift will be engaging in the closest thing to time travel in order to cheer on Kelce as the Chiefs face off against the San Francisco 49ers — but after all, she is a “Mastermind.” And, beyond supporting her beau, Swift’s presence at the Super Bowl is something CBS and advertisers are undoubtedly hoping for, given that her presence at football games this season has significantly boosted ratings.

    Super Bowl LVIII will air live on CBS on Feb. 11.

    Taylor Swift is going to the Super Bowl! …We think!

    We know the Kansas City Chiefs are going, at least! Just a few minutes ago, the Chiefs officially won their game against the Baltimore Ravens on the road in Baltimore by the score of 17-10. And by doing so, and claiming the AFC Championship crown, the Chiefs just punched their ticket to the Super Bowl two weeks from today!!

    It didn’t come without some drama. The Chiefs got out to an early lead in the first quarter of the matchup, only for the Ravens to tie things up late in the first quarter with a touchdown of their own. We didn’t know it at the time, but that would be the ONLY touchdown the Ravens would score on this day. But when it happened, it looked bad for Travis Kelce and the Chiefs! And things got even worse when — immediately after the score — Ravens players got together in the end zone and very openly mocked and trolled Taylor and the Chiefs’ “swag surfing” phenomenon:

    Like we said, though, the Chiefs got the last laugh by winning the whole thing! And then in the postgame, Taylor and Travis locked lips down on the field in celebration! Yes, really! The moment was SO cute!!! Ch-ch-check it all out for yourself from multiple angles (below):

    And now the question is… will Taylor even be at the Super Bowl?! We want to say yes, and we obviously really hope to say yes, but here’s the thing: we don’t know! The Super Bowl is in two weekends, and as TMZ noted on Sunday afternoon, that’s the same weekend where Taylor has FOUR shows scheduled on four straight nights in Japan. She’s set to play Tokyo on February 7, 8, 9, and 10 — and the big game is set to kick off in the late afternoon on February 11.

    Based on show times and time differences, Taylor would have about 36 hours to get from her final Tokyo show and hightail it back to Vegas to make the matchup. It’s obviously possible, especially considering the fact that Taylor has her own private jet and uses it often to do stuff just like this. But it’s not a done deal! Remember, earlier this season, Taylor missed several of Travis’ games when she was doing other Eras Tour shows down in South America.

    Granted, those were just regular season games, and not the Super Bowl. This next one is the biggest football game of the year by FAR. So, something tells us TayTay will be in Sin City for that one. But it ain’t for certain yet! For now, though, we bet she’s just rushing out to her huge party for Travis and the gang now that they’ve won the big game in Baltimore! Congrats to the Chiefs… and to Taylor!!
