  • Parents Call for More Support for Students With ADHD and Learning Disorders

New national survey from Huntington Learning Center and YouGov finds overwhelming demand for personalized, supplemental learning programs.

A new national survey conducted by Huntington Learning Center in partnership with YouGov reveals overwhelming demand among parents for more personalized, supplemental learning programs to support students with ADHD and learning disorders. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, 77% of parents agree that tutoring programs are important tools for addressing educational gaps, and 79% say they would enroll their child in a specialized tutoring program if diagnosed with a learning disability. Over half of parents (57%) report that the pandemic negatively impacted their child’s academic progress, with middle schoolers facing the most significant setbacks. While reasons for enrolling in supplemental learning vary, ranging from improving confidence to enhancing focus and executive functioning, 40% of parents who felt the pandemic had a negative impact have at least one child enrolled in such support.

The survey also found that 70% of parents believe supplemental learning programs are important for every child’s academic success, and 80% agree that schools should subsidize these programs specifically for students with learning disorders such as ADHD. For many families, traditional classrooms alone are no longer enough, especially when learning differences make it harder for students to stay organized, focused, and engaged.

“With appropriate and intensive intervention, students with ADHD and learning disorders can thrive,” said Dr. Mary Rooney, a clinical psychologist and featured expert in Huntington’s recent national webinar, ADHD and Learning Disorders: Understanding the Overlap and Unlocking Effective Intervention. “A diagnosis doesn’t mean a child isn’t smart-it means their brain learns differently. Understanding that can preserve self-esteem and open the door to real progress.”

Huntington Learning Center has long recognized the unique challenges students with ADHD face in the classroom. That’s why its ADHD support program is built around personalized instruction designed to address the specific struggles tied to attention, impulsivity, time management, and organization. Each student receives individualized support tailored to their learning style, with tutors breaking down complex skills into smaller, manageable parts to help reduce overwhelm and build confidence. Huntington’s program also emphasizes executive functioning strategies, helping students develop stronger study habits, plan ahead, and stay focused during assignments and tests.

In addition to academic instruction, Huntington maintains ongoing collaboration with parents and schools to ensure continuity and support across learning environments. Regular progress updates and communication with classroom teachers allow tutors to adapt plans and provide more targeted support, helping each child reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom.

“No two students with ADHD are the same,” said Anne Huntington Sharma, President and Board Member of Huntington Learning Center. “That’s why our programs are customized to each learner, addressing not just academics but the skills and confidence they need to succeed in and out of the classroom.”

By addressing the root challenges that often accompany ADHD and learning disorders, Huntington Learning Center is helping students rebuild confidence, close learning gaps, and re-engage with school in a meaningful, sustainable way.

  • Parents Express Uncertainty Over College Future as Nearly All Agree Supplemental Education is Key to Post-High School Success

New Survey Shows Nearly Half of Students Have Altered Their Postsecondary Plans; Families Grapple with Evolving College Admissions Landscape

A new nationwide survey by Huntington Learning Center and conducted by YouGov reveals growing parental uncertainty about the future of higher education for their children, with major shifts underway in how families approach postsecondary planning.

The majority of parents surveyed (70%) agree that supplemental learning programs are important in ensuring any child’s academic success. This sentiment comes amid continued fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving college admissions requirements that are reshaping the traditional path to higher education.

“Families are navigating a postsecondary landscape that looks very different than it did just a few years ago,” said Anne Huntington Sharma, President and Board Member of Huntington Learning Center. “Even when testing policies don’t directly impact them, many parents are seeking extra support to help their children stay competitive, confident, and prepared-and that’s where high-quality supplemental learning becomes essential.”

Key findings from the survey of 843 U.S. parents with children ages 10 to 18 include:

    • 79% of parents agree that supplemental learning (such as tutoring) is essential for preparing students for the college admissions process.

    • 29% report that their child changed which schools they applied to

    • 43% believe supplemental learning (such as tutoring) would improve their child’s study habits

    • 45% believe supplemental learning (such as tutoring) would improve their child’s confidence

The findings underscore how the pandemic-era disruptions have extended far beyond K-12 learning, reshaping not only how students learn but also how they plan for the future.

In response to these trends, Huntington Learning Center has continued to evolve its offerings, providing families with academic coaching, college prep, and test readiness resources that go beyond the classroom.

“Our goal is to make sure every student-no matter their learning style or where they are in their academic journey-has access to the support they need to pursue the future they want,” Huntington Sharma added.

  • Over One-Third of Parents Have Enrolled Their Students in Supplemental Learning Programs; Over Half Name the Pandemic as a Disruptor

New Nationwide Survey Reveals Middle Schoolers Most Likely to Seek Extra Learning Resources to Close Foundational Skills Gaps and Build Confidence

More than half of parents (57%) agree that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on their child’s education and/or academic success, and more than a third (35%) now have their child enrolled in a supplemental learning program, according to a new nationwide survey* of parents of children ages 10-18 conducted by Huntington Learning Center and YouGov. The percentage of students receiving supplemental academic support is particularly high among middle schoolers: 41% among parents of 12-year-olds, 42% of 13-year-olds, and 46% of 14-year-olds.

While parents identified several academic areas where they would expect to see improvement in their children from a supplemental learning program, such as GPA (37%) and specific skills like reading comprehension and writing (37%), the top potential improvement cited was increasing their child’s confidence (45%). Improving study habits (43%) might also lead parents to turn to supplemental programs.

“Not only have children experienced academic setbacks, but their confidence in their abilities has taken a significant hit,” said Anne Huntington Sharma, President and Board Member of Huntington Learning Center. “Families are seeking support beyond the classroom, and this survey confirms that the demand for accessible, personalized academic help is greater than ever.”

These results also reflect a deeper, more concerning trend: Students currently in middle school are seeking help at the highest rates. Today’s 12, 13 and 14 year olds were in the earliest, most foundational years of their education when COVID-19 shutdowns began. In other words, students who were 7-9 years old, typically in first through third grades, five years ago, may be further behind than other age groups. These are the years when critical reading and writing skills are developed, and according to parents surveyed, many students are still struggling to catch up.

To help address these challenges, Huntington Learning Center has expanded its partnerships with school districts and public entities nationwide. In the 2023-24 school year alone, Huntington operated 124 programs funded by state and federal sources across 17 states (with 4 more in progress), serving more than 7,500 students through over 300,000 hours of instruction.

Amelia Knows How to Keep the Peace and Prevent Bullying

Online tips are available to teachers during October’s National Bullying Prevention Month

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 2, 2017

In support of Bullying Prevention Month, Amelia teaches students in K-8 how to keep their schools bully free. Amelia is one of six relatable characters developed over decades of research and efficacy. Each character is highly researched and evidenced backed and helps thousands of teachers impart social/emotional learning and character foundation skills. “During October, Amelia is our champion character. She is a teacher’s best tool in supporting Anti-Bullying,” said Linsey Covert the driver behind a growing cloud-based, integrated coursework (TEAMology) that builds stronger, more resilient students.

What gives Amelia her street cred? Well, let’s hear from Amelia herself. “It is ok if students don’t always agree with each other or even like each other. They just need to learn how to celebrate differences, always be respectful and productively cooperate on a TEAM. When you help students build a TEAM culture, there will be no room for bullies.”

Dr. JoLynn Carney, Penn State University College of Education researcher, joined in the research and development of Project TEAM. “What we always suspected was that creating a positive environment by empowering the students with strong prosocial attitudes and skills would help with bullying problems, other disciplinary issues, and provide a more productive environment for learning and growing. We now have the data that applying this approach with fidelity actually works.”

Jenna St. Mars from Rostraver Elementary School in Belle Vernon, Pa has been utilizing Project TEAM in her school since the 2016-2017 school year. “The kids are really being in the house here at RES and their behavior has been fabulous since the start of the school year. We tie Amelia into our Anti-Bullying month activities very heavily. We weave her into all aspects of Bullying Prevention month as she represents inclusion and the respect for others and their differences that we want our students’ to emulate,” says Jenna.

Jen Lowe from Stafford Township SD has been using the material for over six years. “I can tell you it is worthwhile. Bullying is basically gone, and I have a better handle on my students’ emotions and how to handle them. It’s techniques we weren’t taught in school,” said Jen.

During October, TEAMology is offering tips on how to use Amelia to help students understand the value of peace, harmony and acceptance and also to give students strategies to use if faced with a bullying situation. Follow TEAMology on Facebook (TEAMology) and Twitter (@weareteamology) where all month long, Amelia will be featured along with easy to use activities and ideas for promoting Anti-Bullying.

About TEAMology: TEAMology is a culmination of decades of research and side-by-side teaching with the most renowned experts in SEL. The material uses six relatable characters and the foundations of a house called Project TEAM which teachers and students use to emulate best SEL skills and relate them to Future Ready Indexes such as career exploration practices.

Truth, Beauty & Goodness – Shining Mountain Waldorf School Introduces New Brand Logo and Brand Essence Painted Across School’s Festival Hall Gymnasium

    Press Release

    updated: Mar 31, 2017

Shining Mountain Waldorf School, a fully accredited Pre-K through 12 independent Waldorf school in Boulder, Colorado, introduced a new brand and logo that better reflects the values and aspirations of the school. The words truth, beauty and goodness – the new brand essence – have been painted across the wall of the school’s gymnasium.

“Waldorf Education is the fastest growing educational movement in the world. It is our responsibility and joy to develop future leaders that will have positive impacts on the world, it is important that our brand reflect this,” said Jane Zeender, School Director. “At the heart of our new branding is our purpose – we are a community dedicated to educating children to lead and serve the world in truth, beauty and goodness.”

“Waldorf Education is the fastest growing educational movement in the world. Mary Eaton Fairfield, Admission & Marketing Director

The new brand includes a new logo, a modern representation of three mountain peaks with a sun rising above the center peak. The three mountain peaks are reminiscent of those that can be viewed from the school’s campus and conjure the three words from the brand essence. The sun highlights an aspirational destination. The school’s website at http://shiningmountainwaldorf.org/ was updated to reflect the new branding and the new logo has been emblazoned across the front of the school’s Festival Hall.

“Truth, beauty and goodness are ancient ideas; they are virtues that are crucial bedrocks of our humanity. Each one strengthens a different aspect of a human being, and each represents something we wish to foster in our educational program,” said Dr. Lawrence Mathews, high school teacher and faculty chair. “The qualities of truth, beauty and goodness are now regarded as the school’s essence, a true North, something for the school to follow, to aspire to, and to place at the center of our work.”

The words truth, beauty and goodness, and the new logo were painted across the wall of the high-school gymnasium to allow students to live the bold brand purpose.

Designed in partnership with Boulder-based creative firm, Storyworks Inc., the new brand and visual identity presents the school with clarity, purpose and vision.

“Shining Mountain provided a unique opportunity for us to work with a process we call True North, which is a brand process we designed for purpose centered organizations,” said Michael Shaun Conaway, CEO of Storyworks. “The faculty, staff, students and parents all contributed to the process so that we could tell the most authentic story of the uniqueness of a Shining Mountain education. When together we all hit upon Truth, Beauty and Goodness as the essence of the education, we knew we had found a True North that would guide the school for years to come. Once True North was found it was easy to tell the Shining Mountain story in the identity and in the films we made about the school.”

Shining Mountain would like to encourage everyone to explore the updated website and watch a new video series about the school at http://shiningmountainwaldorf.org/video/.
