  • Macau Economy Flourishing, as Visitation Hits Record

    The economy in Macau is booming, with gross domestic product climbing more than 5% in the second quarter of 2025. Visitation is at an all-time high, and casino gaming revenue, the heartbeat of the Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR), is nearing its return to pre-COVID-19 conditions.

    July and August set new gross gaming revenue (GGR) post-COVID highs. Casino gamblers generated net win for the six gaming operators of $2.76 billion in July and $2.77 billion in August.

    Year to date, Macau casino revenue is up 7.2% on the prior year to $20.36 billion. That is more than 82% of the amount of gaming money the six casinos won in 2019 through August.

    Gaming analysts and brokerages are amending their full-year GGR outlook positively, as the city’s casinos have successfully managed to turn their attention away from the VIP high roller to the mass and premium mass markets, as well as the leisure and business travel sectors.

    Visitation Hits Record 

    Macau casinos can no longer rely on high rollers to keep their properties afloat. VIP junket groups are largely no more, with the travel organizers seeking Asian gaming markets not under China’s control.

    Macau, which remains the world’s richest gaming market in terms of casino revenue, has invested many billions of dollars in nongaming amenities. Most notable has been the region’s quick embrace of K-pop, with its resorts’ many large theaters hosting prominent acts and events, including this weekend’s Fact Music Awards at the government’s newly opened Outdoor Performance Venue.

    The Macau Statistics and Census Bureau reports that August visitation reached a record 4,219,034 people. An 18.4% year-over-year rise, last month brought year-to-date visitation to almost 26.7 million visitors, a 15% surge from 2024. 

    Economic Data Points 

    By most critical data points, Macau’s economy is strong. Inflation in July was just 0.12%, and the city’s unemployment rate for its nearly 686K residents stands at just 2.6%.

    The median monthly income is up to $2,222, almost $100 higher than in December 2019. Hotel occupancy rate in July was 91%, on par with pre-COVID levels.

    While China’s economy has failed to stimulate a sustained post-pandemic recovery, with factory and mining output decelerating in August, it’s a different story in Macau.

    Amid the global health scare, Macau announced a diversification plan to reduce its reliance on casino gambling, which had accounted for more than 80 cents of every tax dollar the local SAR government had received. Macau has invested in integrated tourism, or special events, including large-scale business gatherings and conventions, plus so-called “health tourism.”

    Macau has also successfully integrated its economy with the Greater Bay Area, with the government investing in initiatives to attract companies invested in the technology and trade industries. Macau has also established a free trade zone with neighboring Hengqin Island, where land is more available for the city’s ongoing economic ambitions.

    Macau is more accessible than ever before, too. A record number of Chinese mainland cities are eligible for Individual Visit Scheme visas, which allow people to travel in and out of Hong Kong and/or Macau not in a group. Macau and Hong Kong, since 2018, have also been connected by the 34-mile Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

  • Do Not, Under Any Circumstances, Bad Mouth Virtual K-Pop Stars on Social Media

    KPop Demon Hunters has dominated streaming and the box office this summer, but KPop Defamation Hunters landed a win in a different venue: the South Korean courts. The South Korean virtual boy band Plave, which is made up of five members who only ever appear as animations, successfully sued a person who made derogatory comments about the group online.

    According to the BBC, the unidentified social media user made a series of insulting posts about the band in July 2024. Among the attacks: he suggested the people behind the virtual band members “could be ugly in real life” and said they gave off a “typical Korean man vibe.” Some of the posts also included profanity, which doesn’t seem that offensive, but neither do the posts, so it’s probably worth mentioning.

    The person who made the posts attempted to argue that the comments were directed at the avatars that front the group and not the real people lending their voices to the virtual band members. The court didn’t buy it and declared that the avatars represent someone real, so the attacks extend beyond the virtual fronts to the people behind them.

    The victory landed Plave 500,000 South Korean won in total, 100,000 per band member, which works out to just over $70 a pop. Not exactly a fortune for a group that already has more than one million subscribers on YouTube, sold more than 500,000 units of their most recent album in the first week, and performs concerts that attract tens of thousands of fans. It’s also much less than the band asked for. They were seeking 6.5 million won for each performer, which would have worked out to about $4,650 per member and $23,250 total. The band claimed that the comments caused emotional stress for the group.

    Vlast, the band’s label, intends to appeal the damages granted by the court, according to the BBC, arguing that it is too low for a case that sets a precedent for defamation against virtual avatars. While it does seem like the ruling is the first instance of defamation against virtual pop stars, it’s not uncommon for Korean music labels to pursue charges against internet trolls. Several labels in the country have made a concerted effort to go after people who badmouth acts online. The virtual band trend, to some extent, is considered a response to the type of attention and pressure that pop stars receive in Korea.

  • KAI’s KAION Show In Chicago Was Pure Chaos (In The Best Way)

    The Rosemont Theatre in Chicago was packed to the rafters on September 4, and for good reason! KAI (best known as the main dancer of K-Pop juggernaut EXO) was in town for his solo KAION tour, and the energy in the venue could have powered the entire city. Fans (known as EXO-Ls) filled every seat, armed with light sticks and lungs of steel. You know what? The show felt like a holy trinity of S’s: screams, sweat, and sensuality. From the moment the lights dimmed, the decibel level shot through the roof. It was so loud at times that people literally covered their ears, only to burst into laughter and cheers moments later. And on stage, KAI was already drenched in passion and perspiration just a few songs in, gliding across the stage with the fluid grace of a panther.

    When The Crowd Goes Wild

    If there was ever any doubt about KAI’s star power, the Chicago crowd put it to rest. The roar that greeted him could probably be heard from down the street. Every time he struck a pose or flashed a smile, the fans responded with ear-splitting screams. It wasn’t just noise for noise’s sake: it was pure adoration. At points, the high-pitched shrieks were so intense that even die-hard fans found themselves momentarily covering their ears. (Imagine a sound so ecstatic you’re physically overwhelmed by it.) But truth be told, no one really minded. The louder the crowd got, the wider KAI’s grin grew, fueling a feedback loop of excitement!

    KAI kicked off the night with ‘Sinner,’ plunging the theater into a frenzy right off the bat. From there, he launched into a string of solo hits spanning his three-year discography. Each visual was stylish and thematic, building anticipation for the next act without ever distracting from the live performance. It was a thoughtful touch that made the concert feel almost cinematic, yet still all about the music and the man on stage!

In fact, one of his all-black ensembles (complete with leather pants and a jacket worn open to reveal his chiseled abs) nearly caused a meltdown in the crowd. When KAI cheekily asked the audience which outfit was their favorite, the answer was obvious from the deafening cheers. He playfully feigned surprise when fans screamed for the shirtless look, then, with a laugh, he zipped his jacket up and told everyone to “chill out” with a laugh, a lighthearted scolding that only made the screams grow louder.

    Physically, KAI joked that he was exhausted (and who could blame him?). After back-to-back dance breaks, he took a moment during a ment to catch his breath and ask the crowd, “Are you guys tired yet?” The crowd answered with a resounding “No!”, prompting him to quip in response, “Of course you’re not tired, you’re all full of energy!” He said it with a grin, hands on hips, as thousands of fans laughed. It was a candid, humorous moment that highlighted the bond between performer and audience. Here was a global idol, dripping sweat under the spotlights, marveling at how his fans seemed to have endless stamina while he was the one doing all the heavy lifting (or rather, heavy dancing). Honestly, seeing KAI acknowledge his own fatigue so openly, yet still push on with a smile, made the crowd cheer even harder for him.

    And then came the tears. Amid the sexy dance routines and high-octane numbers, KAI wasn’t afraid to get emotional. It’s not every day you see an idol of his caliber openly crying on stage, and it gave the show a genuine, intimate touch.

    Fan Favorites And Surprise Moments

    Emotions ran high, but KAI also kept things fresh and surprising throughout the night. The setlist was stacked, showcasing songs from all four of his mini-albums, plus a few special treats. In a nod to his EXO roots, he threw in a brief acoustic dance medley of EXO classics: ‘Love Shot,’ ‘Growl,’ and ‘The Eve.’ This unexpected tribute had longtime EXO-Ls screaming at the top of their lungs, thrilled to see KAI channeling the group that launched him. It was a clever way to honor his past while owning the stage solo in the present!

    Another unforgettable moment came courtesy of the fans themselves. While KAI ducked backstage for one of several quick costume changes, the production team started playing the instrumental of ‘Amnesia,’ a sultry B-side track that, conspicuously, was not part of the official setlist. Chicago fans were ready for it. In what felt like a coordinated move (but was really pure fan instinct), the entire theater began belting out the lyrics to ‘Amnesia’ in unison. Thousands of voices singing ‘Amnesia’ a cappella filled the venue, creating a goosebumps-tingling moment that no one had expected, not even KAI. When he returned to the stage, he admitted he heard the impromptu singalong from backstage and was genuinely touched. He shook his head in astonishment and smiled that signature bashful smile. It was the kind of organic fan-artist interaction you can’t script, and it clearly left an impression on him (and everyone else in the room)!

    Fans were also treated to plenty of interactive fun. During another costume change interlude, a “dance cam” challenge flashed on the big screen, prompting pockets of the audience to break into KAI’s signature choreographies. Whenever the camera landed on a particularly enthusiastic fan, the entire theater erupted in cheers. Imagine thousands of people doing the ‘Rover’ dance or mimicking the smooth moves from ‘Mmmh’ together; it was pure, wholesome chaos. These little breaks turned out to be delightful bonding moments for the crowd, as strangers high-fived and laughed with each other after each dance cam highlight. In a way, KAI was still orchestrating the vibe even when offstage, giving his fans a chance to shine and connect with one another.

    A Night Of Heart And Heat

    As the show neared its end, KAI had one more surprise up his sleeve: one that would make headlines for K-Pop fans worldwide. In his final ment of the night, still buzzing from the crowd’s energy, he hinted that this solo adventure isn’t the only thing EXO-Ls have to look forward to. With a mischievous glint in his eye, KAI let slip that EXO may or may not be planning a group tour and a new album in the near future. The theater absolutely erupted. Imagine already being on a high from two hours of nonstop music and then hearing the possibility that your favorite group could be making a comeback. The excitement was off the charts. Social media was ablaze within minutes, but in the room itself, fans were hugging, screaming, and generally losing their minds at the mere idea. KAI laughed for spilling secrets which only endeared him more to the crowd.

    Fittingly, he ended the night on a heartfelt note. For the encore, KAI reappeared wearing a relaxed smile (and, in a cute local twist, a jersey thrown over his stage outfit). He closed with ‘Blue’ and ‘To Be Honest,’ two of his most personal songs, waving to every corner of the theater as he sang. The atmosphere turned almost reverent. After all the sweat and bombast, here was KAI simply singing his heart out to a bluesy R&B melody, bathed in blue light. Fans swayed light sticks and phone flashlights gently, soaking in the last moments. When the final note faded, KAI stood in awe of the roaring applause, bowing deeply and taking a moment to just absorb the scene: Chicago giving him one last, giant wave of love!

    In the end, KAION in Chicago wasn’t just a concert: it was a whole experience, a celebration of KAI’s artistry and the reciprocal devotion between a performer and his fans. Conversational and polished, playful and poignant, the night struck a perfect balance. KAI managed to turn a 4,400-seat theater into an intimate arena of shared joy, where everyone was either screaming, sweating, or swooning (often all three at once). As the house lights came up and fans wiped happy tears from their faces, one thing was clear: KAI left an indelible mark on the Windy City, and if this show was any indication, the man is more than capable of selling out arenas and hearts wherever he goes next!

    You know by now how much we love AB6IX‘s music in this household. The boys keep giving us new things without losing their distinctive color and charm. The whole flow of their songs is so well thought out that no matter how many times we listen to them, we are still in awe. And it is a fact that AB6IX songs are simply not complete without their talented rapper, WOOJIN. He jumps in just at the right moments, riding the musical stream flawlessly. So, to celebrate him and his outstanding skills, we picked some of our favorite tracks that showcase his rapping prowess.

    ‘CHERRY’

    We’re starting with a cute heartthrob musical piece. It just so happens that WOOJIN’s parts in ‘CHERRY’ are some of our favorite ones. A fun track like this one deserves only the best, and he knows how to fit his rap to match every song and genre perfectly. The choice to put WOOJIN’s rap at the bridge makes for an even more iconic experience. Dare we say it is the highlight? That whole part in particular stands out in our minds, and we look forward to it every time we listen to AB6IX’s ‘CHERRY.’

    ‘SAVIOR’

    Another title track that’s high on our favorites list has to be ‘SAVIOR’ for many reasons. One of them? You guessed it, it’s WOOJIN’s rap. The verses are spread out in the song, allowing him to take over at just the right times, for just the right time. Moreover, his parts are confident and match the strong vibe of ‘SAVIOR.’ We simply love the whole flow of this track and how it leads us to and from the rap verses.

    ‘MIRROR’

    We just had to sneak in a B-side from AB6IX on this list. Considering just how striking and versatile their whole discography is, how could we not highlight it as much as possible? ‘MIRROR’ is a powerful and upbeat piece that keeps us hooked throughout the entire song. It feels like the track takes a very small pause right before WOOJIN’s rap verse as if to tell us: “Prepare yourselves,” and we get why. His part has us seated and immersed while he takes the spotlight and makes it his own for those couple of seconds. And we’re left wanting to replay it. In fact, we’ll just replay the whole song for full appreciation.

    ‘Top Tier (Rock Ver.)’

    Of course, we can’t miss out on mentioning WOOJIN‘s solo songs as well. They further focus on and highlight his talents, all the while showing a different side and style of his. We already knew WOOJIN could dominate the stage, but ‘Top Tier‘ (regardless of which version) emphasizes that skill even more. Just like the lyrics point out, he’s truly a top tier, “from head to toe and everything in between.“

    AB6IX’s WOOJIN has concurred our hearts with his rapping style, and we have absolutely no complaints. If this list wasn’t enough, don’t worry: we came prepared. If you want to get fully absorbed in his style, we recommend you check all of his solo pieces, such as the magnetic ‘COLOR EYE’ or his EP oWn. He also leaves an impactful impression on plenty of B-sides like ‘WHISTLE,’ ‘Butterfly Effect,’ and ‘Hurt Me.’ And, of course, we can’t miss out on mentioning his rap during title tracks like ‘GRAB ME‘ and ‘NVKED.’

    After the release of Killin’ It, we were in awe by what these six talented members can create, and SAD SONG has truly solidified them as our K-Pop essentials! This comeback brings us seven new songs that have left us speechless, and it is such an embodiment of what P1Harmony strives to do with every project: explore different musical styles while adding the touches that could only be made by them. All the tracks are bops in their own way! KEEHO, THEO, JIUNG, INTAK, SOUL, and JONGSEOB have made it very clear that their music keeps improving with every release. There are no limits as to what the group can create! Plus, the six members have been extremely involved in making SAD SONG. From writing and composing the tracks to creatively crafting the concepts, P1Harmony is the real deal, and they’re here to showcase it once again. Being a P1ece is a gift that keeps on giving!

    ‘SAD SONG’

    P1Harmony never misses with their title tracks, but this one has been instantly crowned as their best title track ever. It is also the best choice to start our listening party with its explosiveness! The group has done such a great job of combining all of their individual strengths into this Latin-inspired song. It’s totally new and fresh, and it’s also a perfect fit for their flawless discography. If there is something that we do when P1Harmony releases bangers like this is learn the signature moves! Not only that but ‘SAD SONG’ has fire verses and flawless vocals (we are never recovering from THEO’s voice during the bridge). What else do you need to make it the queen of your playlists? We also got an English version of this perfect title track at the end of the project, which finishes it on such a warm and fun note. We can’t help but be incredibly proud of our favorite six!

    ‘SAD SONG’s’ music video is also legendary! It’s incredibly dynamic, with so many colorful and fun scenes that tie together with the group’s dedication to becoming the heroes that we need. The video includes so many references to P1Harmony’s previous eras (RIP Killin’ It, you will never be forgotten) and the rest of the tracks from this comeback as well. It’s time to rewatch it as many times as possible to catch all these hidden clues!

    ‘It’s Alright’

    The second track of every P1Harmony release is a masterpiece. ‘Late Night Calls?’ Incredible. ‘Reset?’ An instant banger. ‘Black Hole?’ A classic. The boys had to keep their streak going with ‘It’s Alright,’ and they’ve blown our expectations out of the water! This song flows so smoothly with such a great instrumental, and the adlibs throughout it?! They’re the best they’ve ever been! Are we also allowed to freak out about the bridge and the high note on the final chorus? It’s an absolute chef’s kiss from top to bottom! Now, if you excuse us, we will be singing KEEHO’s addictive “I don’t wonder, I don’t wonder, who cares” all day, every day. Our favorite leader has the best vocals we’ve ever heard!

    ‘Last Call’

    Welcome back, iconic boyband music! If you were (and still are, let’s be honest here) a big fan of the hits we got over the 2010s, ‘Last Call’ is for you! This song has such a special sweetness and nostalgia added to it that makes us want to jump around and live life to the fullest. We’re so happy the members have created a melody like this! JIUNG was in charge of composing this track, and we couldn’t have chosen a better musical genius to give us this gem. Also, you know us: we’re already visualizing all these songs with their respective stages, and ‘Last Call’ is one of our must-see performances. We need this track to be a staple encore on P1Harmony’s live setlist! We can already imagine the six of them having fun on stage and enjoying every memory with P1eces 🥹 We will indeed be “partying ’til the end” with this song!

    ‘Welcome To’

    Have you ever wanted a song that captures the excitement that you get before starting something anew? ‘Welcome To’ is the perfect soundtrack for those moments! This track is as electric as the six members, and we can’t get enough of it. It has already become our hype track to get us up and start our days with expectations of what’s to come! The group was really smart for choosing this song as the start of the SAD SONG era with the OUT OF CONTEXT prologue. Also, we have to talk about the bridge! SOUL, who has so many unique parts in this comeback, is what we needed to make this song even better! We know we just got this release in our hands, but we’re already calling it b-side royalty.

    This song screams tour opener! You don’t understand how much we need P1Harmony to open their next performances with this beat. It’s ideal to warm up the audience once the curtain is up!

    ‘All You’

    The cutesy tracks from P1Harmony’s discography are everything to us, and we’re so happy we get to add this one to the list with SAD SONG! Following the nostalgia of the styles used in previous tracks with an additional touch of coolness, ‘All You’ gives us a taste of P1Harmony’s underrated side. We already feel like we are in a dream with the piano in the intro, and it only keeps getting better and better as we listen to the whole thing! We feel like this song really focuses on the members’ unique colors in their vocals. It’s so incredible how we, as P1eces, can distinguish each of the boys’ voices and realize how much they’ve grown as artists. ‘All You’ has made us even fonder of the group’s broad musical range!

    ‘WASP’

    In case you haven’t noticed it yet, SAD SONG has easily become the most iconic P1Harmony mini ever, and this final track is one of the big reasons why. No, you’re not dreaming: we finally got their first unit track! ‘WASP’ features INTAK and JONGSEOB (the best two rappers in K-Pop’s 4th gen, if you ask us) in an incredible hip-hop beat. We already got chills with the rhythm, but the jaw-dropping verses make this song a masterpiece. One of our favorite things ever is listening to these two incredibly talented members going back and forth on their verses, so we already knew this one was going to be a special one. The whole track is even more addictive than the preview we’ve been replaying 24/7! We will be praising it and treasuring it forever 🙏 Step aside “my root came 2005,” you have a new queen in front of you!

    We are so proud of P1Harmony for releasing such incredible bangers in SAD SONG! This comeback’s quality is a complete 10/10, and we have so much fun unlocking new musical styles with them. We’re so happy we get to see them growing so much, and we can’t wait to see what this era brings to the group’s unstoppable success!

    Sometimes Baekhyun’s dance skills can get overlooked, as he’s so infamous for his vocals. But allow us, and the ‘Pineapple Slice’ dance practice, to remind you what a great performer Baekhyun is. His movements are as smooth and nonchalant as his voice can be.

    We’ve already mentioned it twice, but give us the grace to mention it again: there’s no vocalist in the world quite like Baekhyun. Any opportunity to hear his vocals in full force is one we will take, and the live band version of ‘Pineapple Slice’ just multiplied our love for it tenfold.

    We don’t know about you, but we’ve missed seeing Baekhyun on music shows more than we could ever say. Of course, we adored every stage from EXO’s ‘Cream Soda’ comeback, but solo comebacks are just something entirely different.     The KingDom Reigns For One Night at Warehouse Live Midtown

    K-pop visited Warehouse Live Midtown last night in the form of The KingDom.

    The KingDom, a seven-member boy group under GF Entertainment, debuted as simply Kingdom on February 18, 2021, with the song “Excalibur.” The members are Dann, Arthur, Mujin, Louis, Ivan, Hwon, and Jahan. The names might cause a curious head tilt but not immediately jump out at you, so let me explain. Each member adopted the name of a historical monarch – Arthur, King of Britain and wielder of Excalibur; “Sun King” Louis XIV of France; Shah Jahan, Mughal emperor and Taj Mahal builder; etc. Thus, their name (and names).

    Appropriately, their fans became known as “Kingmakers,” and, in the interest of full disclosure, I am one. I’m a Kingmaker. KingDom’s Houston gig marks the sixth time I’ve seen the group live in the past year. I go to shows, I go to cup sleeve events, and I’ve participated in enough fan calls that I’ve lost count. And if you don’t know what a cup sleeve event or a fan call is, well, consider yourself normal.

    I’m pretty sure my introduction to The KingDom (then Kingdom) was a tweet that essentially called them K-pop for the Dungeons & Dragons-loving crowd due to their concept. Each of the group’s first seven albums was named for a member, each album’s title track cleverly referenced if not directly used instrumentation of that member’s era, and each title track’s music video featured a well-realized world gorgeously stylized according the era. Officially, the group is referred to as “cinematic idols,” and it’s not unwarranted. They’ve built a deep lore and have incorporated things like cliffhangers and post-credit scenes like major franchises.

    That’s where we started, the history-based first season of an originally planned four seasons comprised of 32 albums (you read that right), but where we are now is back in modern times, a parallel dimension we’ve been told, where the members are working to prevent an apocalypse. It’s a rebrand. The upside to rebranding to a much more standard K-pop concept with the group’s eighth mini album Realize, released in April, is that it makes the group more accessible (and familiar) to a wider audience of K-pop. And on Wednesday night, the group leaned right into it, opening their set with the title track off Realize, “Flip that Coin,” an energetic start that led right into another track from the album, aptly titled “ENERGY.”

    Though the rebrand is a big jump for existing fans, it allows the group to try and capitalize on the strength they’ve already shown in their B-sides. The more contemporary tracks that have filled out their mini albums, the ones not heavy with historical artifice, are often quick to become fan favorites, like “X-GAME” and “Blinder,” both of which made the 16-song setlist. It will also, hopefully, allow more growth from lyricists/composers Dann and Mujin, who seem to find ways to shine with their contributions to the group’s albums.

    “X-GAME,” an addictive banger if ever there was one, and the catchy-as-hell “GUNDAM” were next before the group left the stage to Mujin, who performed “Attitude” with Dann. It’s a new song (only ten days old today, according to Mujin’s SoundCloud) that, as far as I can tell, made its premiere on tour – and lucky us. It’s a fun, braggadocious song with an easy-to-sing chorus.

    Dann, Ivan, and Hwon showed off their vocals on a cover of Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” next (Dann and Ivan especially shined, with Ivan later effortlessly showing off his ability to hit a high note on command) before the whole group finally dove into the royal part of their catalog, grouped by release order and a little geography: “Excalibur” and “Long Live The King,” followed by “Ascension” and “Dystopia,” and then “COUP D’ETAT.” It’s worth noting that even stripped down, without the elaborate costumes and props — no swords, no fans, no ribbons, etc. – these songs still slap. The members are excellent performers and bring the songs to life through each song’s compelling choreography. Each song is blessed with memorable point choreography that all the just members ate up, though Arthur, in particular, seemed to be on the attack.

    Arthur brought a lot of power to his sharp gestures, which we got to see again on a dance cover of NCT U’s “Baby Don’t Stop” with Louis. The two complemented each other well, bringing their own unique style to the choreography. An irresistibly bubbly and bouncy cover of “Just do it” by Seventeen sub-unit BSS was next (performed by Dann, Arthur, and Jahan) before the whole group covered One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” I don’t know whose idea it was to do 1D but give them more money. The energy was fantastic, and the singalong vibe was contagious. The KingDom then closed their set with the ooo-along “Best Thing” and the joyful, jumptastic “Blinder.”

    Note No. 0: Fresh from Chicago and Atlanta and shocked by the Texas heat, Dann asked, “Is this the same America?” Unfortunately, yes.

    Note No. 1: I usually can’t stand the yee-haws that seem to be required at Texas shows, and though they were still present, it was less annoying than usual.

    Note No. 2: There was plenty of banter between the crowd and English-speaking Dann. He seems like a natural emcee, but the highlight is always that, as other members continue to improve their English skills, they find new ways to troll him – especially Mujin.

    Note No. 3: Anyone who said their feet didn’t hurt was a damn dirty liar.

    Anyone can have an eye for fashion, but it’s extremely special to have a heart for it, too. HONGJOONG has both—one in the literal sense. Adorned in crystals that form an eye motif across his chest (courtesy of Balmain) that shimmers throughout the studio, he confidently struts in front of the camera. He was supposed to wear the piece at Balmain’s men’s fashion show earlier in the year, but it was rescheduled to September. HONGJOONG, nonetheless, is elated to finally wear the outfit.

    It’s the day before ATEEZ’s monumental and rainy show at Citi Field in Queens, NY—one of the stops on their “[TOWARDS THE LIGHT : WILL TO POWER]” world tour. And despite a busy schedule, HONGJOONG arrives at StyleCaster’s midtown Manhattan studio with a wide grin and boundless energy. He meticulously curates every decision of the shoot. He even brought his own accessories—a wide-brimmed hat to emulate his idols—and he executes each pose with precision. He’s genuinely mindful of his surroundings, thanking the staff any chance he gets and making sure they get their proverbial flowers for their hard work.

    “It gives me so much inspiration to wear clothes and outfits I’m not familiar with. My opinion on fashion is changing. My favorite things are changing too.” 

    HONGJOONG is a creative force. His songwriting credits stretch throughout the K-pop group’s whole discography, and he develops touching ways to unite his members (like designing a ring for each band member to commemorate their Coachella debut). His positive attitude speaks to how mindful and present he is in every aspect of ATEEZ’s success—from the nitty-gritty of music production to the out-of-this-world pirate and cowboy concepts they bring to life in videos and onstage.

    How would you describe your fashion evolution?
    When I was a trainee, I liked too many things. Because in those days, I thought I had to show everything to everyone. I always wore so many accessories and only colorful clothes. After we debuted, I recognized what things fit me and what things looked good for me onstage and backstage. I’m learning all of it because I can see so many photos of what I’m wearing from my fans. 

    My thoughts about fashion naturally evolved over the years. These days, I figure out what I wear in real time. When I wear Balmain’s clothes, I also try to figure out how the outfit fits with my own vibe. 

    You’ve made your own custom clothes, and I think that’s the coolest fact ever.
    Thank you! I’m a little shy to talk about my DIY clothes because I’m not a professional designer. But I have the confidence to always make my own things.

    Do you have a favorite piece you made?
    In Phoenix, I dyed one of my clothes after I saw a David Bowie mural. I was inspired and wanted to draw on my Jacquemus colored jacket. It’s one of my favorite pieces. I’ve posted it on Instagram, but I’ve never worn it in front of people. Someday I’d like to, because it’s very colorful. It’s good for the summer and matches the Olympic ring colors. 

    How has touring changed the way you style yourself?
    Touring has helped me in a very good way. There are many opportunities to see new outfits and clothes, because when we are in Korea, we have really busy schedules. One of my hobbies is to go to some stores and see something new. I’m curious about what materials they use, what colors they use, and what’s trending. When we’re touring, we have time to look around. 

    Many brands sell their clothes only in America or only in Korea, so it’s very good to see different outfits across the globe. It gives me so much inspiration to wear clothes and outfits I’m not familiar with. My opinion on fashion is changing. My favorite things are changing too. For this tour specifically, I’ve worn different kinds of hats, like hunting caps and fedoras.

    Do you have a favorite city that inspired you?
    In Arlington, Texas, they’re really famous for cowboy hats. When we went to Fort Worth, I got one and I wore it onstage. Everyone loved to see that. That’s one of my favorite cities because it’s always changing my mind about fashion. 

    We’ve tried a few cowboy things before in our songs and music videos, but when I saw people wearing it in the original place where it’s from, it was so cool. When I go to those cities in the USA, they all have different cultures. 

    You took some Instagram photos with the cowboy hat and referenced a meme that ATINY made viral during sendoff. 
    So many people like to see our interactions with fans. I enjoyed it so much because when I’m onstage, I just sing and dance. But when I’m off the stage, I love to interact with our fans—ATINY—because we’re all just people. It’s so important that we do that when we release new songs and we show really good fashion. It’s more important that we get good communication with our fans, because when we release new songs, I want them to understand it better.

    This is your first time playing big arenas and stadiums for multiple dates. What’s the experience like compared to other tours? 
    Every ATEEZ concert that we did this year is bigger than the previous years. Every year is different, and every city is different too. We started in very small halls when we first came to the U.S. This time, we’re in stadiums and are making hit songs in the U.S. It’s something different that we have to release better songs and we have to show better stages to our fans.

    But at the same time, I want ATINY to feel like we’re not far away. If we become more famous, our original fans will think that because we’re playing stadiums, we’re so far away from them. I don’t want any of our fans to feel like that. 

    I just want them to feel like they’re always near us and that our songs relate to their life. After our concerts, we get to meet our fans, and I want to make that communication and interaction important for them. 

    What’s it like to collaborate with the production team when producing songs?
    We have a producing team, EDENARY, and the leader of the group is Eden. He’s one of my closest friends, because I met him 10 years ago in our company and we grew up together. When I participate in making songs, it’s very natural. We use the same studio. If I have a keyword and genre in mind, they develop and give the songs and demos back to me. They ask about the direction, and there’s back and forth about feedback.

    When I’m in the U.S. or another country, we do a lot of Zoom meetings to discuss and make the songs. We get to business and we think about our next albums and concepts. So that’s what makes our music very ongoing. 

     “I’m thankful for our members and ATINY because they’re always with me. When ATINY are telling us their stories, that gives me so much motivation to make music.”

    What creatively drives you as a songwriter?
    Michael Jackson first inspired me to make music when I was in middle school. When I first listened to “Billie Jean,” I was really curious about the instrumentals. It’s not just simple synthesizer and piano sounds. I was like “How did he make this?” I was searching on YouTube how to make “Billie Jean” instrumentals. I’m studying English now, but back then I didn’t know that much. All of the comments on the video were in English. I translated it all and started to make music because of that. 

    Michael and David Bowie still give me a lot of inspiration. But at the same time, I’m thankful for our members and ATINY because they’re always with me. When I make music or write lyrics, there’s always inspiration from them too. When the ATEEZ members talk privately or when they tell their own stories, I think about all of that in the songwriting process. Even when ATINY are telling us their stories, that gives me so much motivation to make music. 

    What was your favorite fashion show? 
    My first fashion show was Balmain last year, and this year I went to Comme des Garçons. When I first arrived at the hotel room for Balmain’s fashion show, I opened the invitation to see that it was all about flowers. I love flowers and I felt so lucky to see that it was the theme of my first fashion show. I was like, “Olivier [Rousteing] knew something!”

    When I saw all the outfits on the runway, there was a dress that had flowers all over it. I was so impressed by it that I missed the two or three outfits that were walking after that. I loved the outfit that I wore to that fashion show as well—the one with a French-style beret.

    ATEEZ members just opened up their personal Instagram pages. Have you enjoyed making your own profile?
    I’m not someone that usually uses social media that much. When I was a trainee, I just didn’t use it. Now that we’ve made our own individual accounts, when I want to post something, I just do it. I don’t use Instagram that much because I just follow the members. I really enjoy uploading, and I’m so happy when I do it. 

    When I post on my feed, it’s all cool aesthetics. However, my Instagram stories are so crazy. If I get an idea, I just want to do it. I use so many filters. 

    What’s your favorite filter?
    The one where it multiplies a photo or video. Honestly, that one is my favorite. But my vibe is always changing.

    Carats (a.k.a. SEVENTEEN fans) had just celebrated the 8th Carat Land event a few days ago. Now, a 2024 world tour for SEVENTEEN has been announced. If you’re a Carat who has never been to a SEVENTEEN concert, start saving up because the boys might tour in your area.

    Titled “Right Here” World Tour 2024, the 13-member boy group will be visiting Korea, Japan, the US, and other to-be-announced Asian countries this year in October.

    Many fans were disappointed that the latest world tour is still limited in scope. Hopefully, in the future, more Carats will be able to watch SEVENTEEN live on stage.

    We’re all waiting for tickets to go on sale, or even for the ticket sale date to be announced. We’ll have to wait for Ticketmaster to put the Right Here World Tour tickets up for sale on their website.

    SEVENTEEN Right Here World Tour 2024

    In 2022, SEVENTEEN had their “Be the Sun” World Tour. The group had visited similar territories in addition to having shows in Canada. For the 2024 World Tour, it’s unknown if SEVENTEEN will return to Canada.

    But let’s look at the bright side. The Right Here World Tour will surely be memorable and nostalgic. We can anticipate SEVENTEEN to perform songs from their “17 is Right Here” compilation album. We might hear songs that the group debuted with, in addition to newer releases.

    Yep, you read that correctly. We got the opportunity to exclusively interview Lay Zhang, and we’re going to be pinching ourselves over this one for a while.

    Back in June, Lay Zhang released his latest album, STEP, which was his first entirely in English. You may have come to know Lay through this, or its singles ‘Run Back To You’ or ‘Psychic,’ or you might’ve known Lay for over a decade now as part of K-Pop juggernaut EXO. Regardless of when you got here, we can all agree that Lay is a force to be reckoned with. It was an honor to ask Lay Zhang about STEP, his growth since his rookie days, and how mentoring young artists inspires him, all in this exclusive interview!

    Huge congratulations on the release of STEP! How does it feel to have the whole album out in the world?
    Thank you! It feels incredible to finally share this album with everyone. I’m excited for fans to hear it.

    What makes now the right time for you to release your debut all-English album?
    It felt like the perfect moment to connect with a broader audience and showcase my growth as an artist.

    You worked with some amazing artists and writers on the album. What do these collaborations mean to you? And how did they come about?
    These collaborations mean a lot to me. They came about through mutual respect and a shared vision for the music.

    Lay On ‘Fresh’

    Was there a song you were most nervous for fans to hear? Or one where the reaction has taken you by surprise?
    I was a bit nervous about ‘Fresh’ because it’s different from what I’ve done before, but the positive reaction has been amazing.

    We can’t stop listening to ‘Fresh!’ What are some things that make you feel “fresh and brand new?”
    Thank you! Traveling, trying new experiences, and connecting with fans always make me feel rejuvenated.

    The moment we heard the title track ‘STEP,’ we knew the performance would be amazing, and the official dance video proved us right! What can you tell us about the experience of recording this song?
    Recording ‘STEP’ was a dynamic and energetic experience. The dance video was a lot of fun to create, and I’m glad fans are enjoying it.

    Congratulations on the start of the Grandline 4 Tour, too! How does it feel to be back on the road and sharing the new album with fans in person?
    It’s thrilling to be back on tour and connect with fans face-to-face. Their energy makes every performance special.

    Show It All aired earlier this year. Of course, you were a mentor, but is there anything that you learned or took with you and brought to your own performances since the show?
    Mentoring taught me a lot about patience and perspective. I’ve definitely applied some of those lessons to my own performances.

    How did you find the experience of being a mentor, especially while you are still very active in the industry yourself?
    Being a mentor was rewarding. It was a balancing act, but it also gave me a new appreciation for the industry.

    Lay On His Career

    How do you think you’ve changed the most since your own rookie days? And what do you think your rookie self would think of the Lay Zhang of 2024?
    I’ve grown a lot in terms of confidence and skill. I think my rookie self would be proud and inspired by the journey.

    As a singer, dancer, rapper, actor, producer, and businessman, it feels like there’s no creative outlet you’re too afraid to try! Are there any other creative avenues you’d love to explore?
    I’m always open to new creative challenges. Exploring more in the realms of film and fashion interests me.

    What message would you like to give to new fans who discover the world of Lay Zhang through STEP?
    Welcome! I hope my music inspires and brings joy to you. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

    And what would you like fans who have followed you for over a decade now to take away from this release?

    TXT Celebrate Their Bond In ‘We’ll Never Change’ And CHIKAI

    Another TOMORROW X TOGETHER comeback, another arrow straight to our hearts! Back with their fourth Japanese single, CHIKAI, TXT has continued the trajectory they began earlier this year with TOMORROW, by which we mean they’ve decided to hit us where it hurts.

    CHIKAI translates to ‘oath,’ and that’s exactly what this single album is. Across three tracks, the members restate their dedication to one another, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. TXT are always busy, but 2024 is proving to be one of the most intense yet. Following the back of TOMORROW‘s global success, TXT are in the middle of their third world tour, ACT: PROMISE. They’re also developing more and more notoriety in the fashion space and have attended Paris Fashion Week twice so far this year, and three of the five members have launched their own solo variety shows. See what we mean? You couldn’t dedicate yourself to all of that unless you really meant it.

    TXT continues to grow but don’t worry, they’ll never change…

    ‘We’ll Never Change’

    First of all, can we take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous that harp is? We absolutely love that TXT emphasizes it in the choreography, which is as ethereal and dainty as the song deserves.

    The layers in both the vocals and the track are stunning, we’re obsessed with the delicacy of the guitar, and overall the song is just so soothing. The tape sound effect in the production adds to the wistful sentimentality, and we couldn’t love it more if we tried. A reverent homage to friendship, ‘We’ll Never Change’ is the latest in a long list of nostalgic TXT songs.

    Even at a distance, even as we get older, one oath, we’re never, we’re never, we’re never changing.

    ‘We’ll Never Change’ lyrics

    Our tubatu sing of “Blending into each other, filling each other’s gaps,” as “love sparkles,” and we couldn’t agree with them more. As a group with distinct personalities, performance styles, and musical tastes, MOA has long known how well TXT balances each other out. After all, as they say, “Our ‘difference’ is not ‘wrong.’”

    ‘We’ll Never Change’ Music Video

    And as for the ‘We’ll Never Change’ music video? It’s delicious agony from start to finish. It opens with a flying light very similar to the fox from the ‘Deja Vu’ music video, and that’s not the end of the links. Just as ‘Deja Vu’ referenced so many of their Korean music videos, ‘We’ll Never Change’ does the same for TXT’s Japanese discography.

    TXT all play football together, just as they do in the ‘Run Away (Japanese Version)’ video, but this time Beomgyu is properly in the group now (and doesn’t fall off a bike in this entire MV, which feels like the biggest miracle of all). They all seem to have grown-up jobs now (boo), but what hasn’t changed is their love for their friendship. Yeonjun, who cleans a cinema, sheds tears as he watches their memories on the big screen. It adds to the lore theory that the members only exist inside his head, which makes us wanna bawl our eyes out, TBH.

    ‘Deja Vu (Japanese Version)’

    One thing you should know about ‘Deja Vu?’ It’s a triple threat. One of the best K-Pop songs of 2024 now has three versions! We’re so happy to add the Japanese version to our playlist rotation alongside the original and the ‘Anemoia Remix.’ Sandwiching it in between the other two tracks on CHIKAI really emphasizes its emotional intensity, whilst allowing the other songs to be more gentle, light-hearted moments.

    ‘Kitto Zutto (きっとずっと)’

    Is it really a TXT comeback if there isn’t a pop-punk-inspired b-side? We guess we’ll never know. ‘Kitto Zutto’ was produced by the one and only diamond maknae, Huening Kai! He adds this to his list of credits including the likes of ‘Dear Sputnik,’ and it’s so cool to see his identity as a producer becoming more and more distinct.

    Lyrically, TXT continues to twist the nostalgia-imbued knife. ‘Kitto Zutto’ or ‘きっとずっと’ approximately translates to ‘undoubtedly always.’ Is it just us, or did you immediately think of TOMORROW b-side ‘Miracle,’ too?     See? We weren’t exaggerating when we said that TXT is out to hit us in the feels with CHIKAI, and basically everything else they’ve done in 2024.

    So, what’s next for our tubatu? All five members (including Beomgyu, despite his injury!) are currently in Japan promoting ‘We’ll Never Change,’ and then TXT will embark on their first dome tour across Japan, starting in Tokyo on July 10th.

    Stray Kids fans are feeling nostalgic about the teaser for the upcoming ATE album. They celebrated six years with the eight-member group earlier, on March 25, 2024. Now, Stray Kids is making a comeback with ATE.

    Although they haven’t released an album in the first half of 2024, Stray Kids have been busy. We’ve seen them grace the MET Gala 2024 decked out in Tommy Hilfiger suits. They’ve also been preparing for their upcoming 2024 World Tour.

    If you don’t want to miss out on the debut of ATE, you can pre-save the album on several music streaming sites like Apple Music and Spotify. Fans won’t have to wait long since ATE will be out on July 19, 2024. The tracklist for ATE hasn’t been released, and we’ll all be able to listen to the full album once it arrives. 

    The Hellevator reference did not go unnoticed

    For a K-pop group that has been around for six years, Stray Kids have implied in this teaser video that their journey is far from over. They will be accomplishing greater feats. We’ll be seeing them stay on the Billboard charts for years to come. But the endearing tribute fans spotted was their callback to ‘Hellevator,’ the debut music video that Stray Kids first released. The MV was released years ago but is currently sitting at 114 million views on YouTube.

    A.C.E. are out of the army and on their way to Orlando

    The five-member Korean boy-band A.C.E. are back and coming to Orlando this Friday for their Rewind US tour.

    Fresh from two years of mandatory military service in South Korea, the band is traveling to 14 cities across North America. (In true Elvis Presley fashion, the band dropped everything to serve in the country’s armed forces, but have regained momentum with ease.)

    The reconvened A.C.E. in quick succession has dropped new mini-album My Girl: My Choice and the single “Supernatural”; My Girl: My Choice boasts a blend of English and Korean love songs with slight jazzy elements meshing with their signature pop flair. A.C.E promises to play fan favorites like “Savage,” “Under Cover,” “Goblin (Favorite Boys)” and more. And that’s an order.

    6 p.m. Friday, July 5, Plaza Live, $69.50-$300.
