  • E-biking teens accused of violently assaulting Hermosa Beach man are arrested

    A video of a gang of teenage e-bikers beating up a man near the Hermosa Beach Pier until one of them yells “he’s dead, he’s dead” sent waves of outrage through the tight-knit coastal community this week.

    On Wednesday, the Hermosa Beach Police Department said it had identified five juveniles involved in the attack. Their ages range from 13 to 15. Two who are accused of being the primary aggressors are under arrest.

    The two teens were booked on suspicion of felony assault at the city jail and will be transported to Juvenile Hall. Their case will be presented to the L.A. County district attorney’s office’s juvenile division for filing consideration, police said.

    The group assaulted a 56-year-old resident about 8 p.m. Friday near 11th Court and Beach Drive, police said. The resident had walked past his intended destination to initiate contact with the youths and did not appear to have been targeted, authorities said.

    Surveillance camera recordings show the teens surrounding the man, knocking him to the ground and then repeatedly punching and kicking him.

    Officers responded to a 911 call for the assault and took the victim to hospital. He was discharged and interviewed by officers Monday. No information has been shared on his condition or injuries.

    In the days after the assault, police spoke with the parents of the teens involved and fielded numerous phone calls, e-mails and videos from the scene submitted by the community as calls for accountability intensified.

    “We know the videos circulating are disturbing,” the department said in a Wednesday statement. “As with all cases, we take this seriously and appreciate the community’s patience while we continue to work on this case. We sincerely thank those who have trusted the process and allowed our team to remain focused on the facts and evidence.”

    The assault was the latest in a string of incidents involving teenagers on e-bikes in the South Bay communities of Manhattan Beach, El Segundo and Redondo Beach. E-biking teens have also been accused of igniting fireworks on the busy Hermosa Beach Pier as well as barreling down streets and assaulting residents.

    The city of Hermosa Beach enacted an emergency ordinance in June 2024 intended to curb dangerous behavior on the motorized bikes. The ordinance requires minors to wear helmets on e-bikes, forbids riding an e-bike under the influence of drugs or alcohol and bans e-bikes on the Greenbelt trail. Juveniles who violate the ordinance can have their e-bikes impounded.

    The Police Department issued 40 e-bike citations this year as of Nov. 13 and has impounded 19 e-bikes since the ordinance was adopted.

  • 1 juvenile dead and 3 others hospitalized after crash in Greene County

    One juvenile is dead, and three others were injured after a crash in Greene County late Friday night.

    News Center 7 previously reported that around 9 p.m. Friday, Greene County Sheriff’s deputies and Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) Troopers were dispatched to the 500 block of Brush Row Road.

    TRENDING STORIES:

    The preliminary investigation revealed that a Chrysler PT Cruiser, operated by a juvenile, was traveling westbound on Brush Row Road.

    The vehicle then traveled off the right side of the roadway, over-corrected, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and struck two fences. It then overturned and struck a third fence before coming to a rest.

    There were four juveniles in the vehicle at the time of the crash, according to the OSHP.

    One juvenile, whose identity has not been released at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The three other juveniles were transported to local hospitals. Details on their conditions were not immediately available.

    The crash remains under investigation.

    I was a freshman in college in 1999, riding around in a brand new Chevy Cavalier with two Rockford Fosgate 12″ subs in the truck, using rap and Hip-Hop music as the soundtrack to my adventures. It was a great year for the genre, with new albums by Dr. Dre, Jay Z, and Eminem heavy in my rotation. I also had just downloaded some music on Napster by a crew from New Orleans who called themselves Cash Money Records.

    There was something supremely hypnotic about rapper Juvenile’s voice and rhyming patterns on “Ha,” the first single from his 400 Degreez album. The beat was also equally transcendent, introducing me to elements of bounce music that this Tejano kid had never heard before. DJ Mannie Fresh was the genius behind those beats, and together the duo would make some of the best Southern rap music ever produced.

    And then one day, while watching MTV at my primo’s house, I heard these famous prophetic words:

    “Cash Money Records taking over for the ’99 and the 2000!”

    The song “Back That Azz Up” was the second single off the 400 Degreez album, and it has been minted by fans as one of the greatest rap songs ever. Even now, 25 years later, the song bangs at the club, at weddings, and in the car. The beat, the lyrics, and the overall feel of the track is infectious, inducing an immediate dance break and putting the world on hold for those 4 minutes and 25 seconds.

    The show at White Oak Music Hall on Friday night began with Mannie Fresh behind the DJ booth, warming up the crowd with a mix of Houston rap classics, R&B classics, and bounce anthems. The crowd was singing and swag surfing to all the hits, and were definitely warmed up to receive the headliner. The 400 Degreez band consisted of a drummer, an electric guitar, a bass guitar, and an additional DJ.

    Juve sauntered onstage wearing a green track suit, a bucket hat, and a pair of shades. His gold teeth and iced out platinum chain sparkled brightly as he rapped the opening tracks “Ha” and “Set It Off.” His voice and wordplay are so iconic: menacing, guttural, humorous, and witty AF. The aura he creates around his music and stage presence is electric and mysterious.

    This concert was initially scheduled to be presented on the lawn, but was later moved inside. And boy did it feel like it…. so many people jam packed the downstairs area of the venue. Luckily, most people were pretty chill and content to be around so many of their fellow Cash Money fans. White girls in Saints jerseys danced to “Get Your Roll On” and “Slow Motion” with their new friends surrounding them. Many of the fans in attendance rapped along to every lyric, even to the b-side tracks like “Shine” and “In My Life.”

    Oh course Juve and Mannie looked on with joyful smiles, realizing how their music has endured time and kept relevant throughout the years. Its important to recognize and celebrate greatness, and that’s exactly what we all did, backing that azz up and bouncing to the beats from the ’99 till forever.

    Detroit police arrested a 16-year-old girl outside her home.

    Nicole Walker says she hasn’t slept or eaten since Detroit police swooped in and arrested her 16-year-old child outside her home on Friday afternoon.

    Since then, Walker hasn’t been able to talk to her child, who is lodged in a juvenile center.

    Walker is also worried because she says her child is gender nonconforming and uses he/him pronouns. Although the mother refers to her “daughter,” Metro Times will use the child’s preferred pronouns.

    Her child, whom Metro Times isn’t identifying because he’s a minor, has been charged with felonious assault on allegations he pointed a gun at someone at a gas station near Walker’s home on the city’s east side.

    Walker, who is on oxygen 24 hours a day, says authorities are preventing her and her child from speaking over the phone.

    “I’m going crazy,” Walker, 55, tells Metro Times. “I can’t get information anywhere. They told me they don’t have to tell me anything about my daughter. I haven’t eaten since Friday. I can’t sleep.”

    In general, police in Michigan are barred from interrogating a child without a parent or guardian present. Walker is worried her child will falsely confess out of fear.

    “I’m so afraid they’re trying to get my daughter to say something she didn’t do,” Walker says. “She’s naive.”

    Last week, Metro Times launched “The Closer,” an investigative series about a former Detroit detective who elicited false confessions and witness statements while interviewing teenagers.

    A Detroit police spokesman defended the department’s handling of the situation, saying Walker’s child wasn’t interrogated, and they “have no authority” over who juveniles are allowed to communicate with while in jail. Metro Times also reached out to Wayne County for comment and will update this article with their response.

    “The family member did come to the station, and we advised her of her daughter being in custody,” the spokesman tells Metro Times. “No interrogation was done that night. … If there were any discussions to be made, they would have contacted a family member or lawyer.”

    Walker says her child was walking home from a convenience store when police arrested him. Walker yanked the oxygen tube out of her nose and demanded to know what was going on.

    “They told me to ‘shut the hell up, this has nothing to do with you,’” Walker claims. “They didn’t Mirandize her. They just took her. She even asked, ‘Why am I being handcuffed?’ They wouldn’t say a word.”

    At about 10 p.m., Walker says, she finally got a call from a court-appointed attorney who explained some vague details about the allegations.

    At a juvenile court hearing via Zoom on Saturday, Walker pleaded to speak with her child, but the referee wouldn’t let her. The referee set a $500 bond but indicated that only Walker could post the bond, she says.

    Since she’s unable to leave her house because she’s on oxygen, Walker has been unable to post bond. She sent family members to try to post bond, but they were denied.

    “They flat out told me I personally have to do it, even though I have my husband, who is her father on her birth certificate,” Walker says.

    But she’s not giving up.

    “I have made up my mind that I will die if I have to pick up my daughter,” Walker says. “I will take a chance and die to find my daughter.”

    A hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in juvenile court.

    Walker desperately wants to talk to her child before the hearing to ensure he doesn’t incriminate himself.

    “I’m so afraid,” Walker says. “I’m scared to death. She’s never been in trouble in a day in her life. She’s never even been in a police department.”

    Child arrested in 'swatting' plot that terrorized Orange County synagogues

    The FBI arrested a child Tuesday in connection with dozens of “swatting” incidents targeting synagogues throughout the nation this summer — including two in Orange County.

    The agency did not provide the minor’s age, gender or name. The juvenile was taken into custody at home, said spokesperson Laura Eimiller, but the FBI did not identify the city.

    The practice of “swatting” refers to when an individual or group of people intentionally misinform law enforcement of a fake threat so that authorities respond to a specified location with tactical units or SWAT teams.

    Authorities say the juvenile suspect was arrested on suspicion of two such incidents at Orange County synagogues.

    Congregation B’nai Israel in Tustin was evacuated after being targeted with a swatting call on July 22.

    Police also responded to a fake bomb threat in Fullerton on Aug. 12. Law enforcement could be seen entering Temple Beth Tikvah about 45 minutes into a Saturday morning Shabbat service that was streamed on Facebook.

    About two minutes later, Rabbi Mati Kirschenbaum asked templegoers to evacuate the building.

    Those were just two of the dozens of hoax threats allegedly made against religious, educational and public institutions across the country this summer.

    Authorities allege the minor suspect helped a group suspected of reporting false threats against at least 25 synagogues in 13 states between July and August.

    The FBI says the juvenile created the server that hosted the swatting network. That server, which has since been taken down, was a safe space for extremist activity, including “the glorification of highly publicized mass killers,” according to the agency.

    “The false swatting threats made in this case drained law enforcement resources and caused a negative financial impact on local communities,” an FBI statement said. “Evidence has shown that making false threats can cause significant distress to victims and can cause physical injury to first responders or other victims.”

    The Orange County’s district attorney’s office is expected to bring charges against the suspect, according to the FBI.

    Gunfire erupts during Black Friday shopping at Northridge mall, but no injuries reported

    Six juveniles were briefly detained after gunshots rang out near Northridge Fashion Center on Friday evening, but no one was injured and no arrests were made, police said.

    Los Angeles Police Department Capt. Kelly Muniz said gunfire was reported near the AMC Theater outside the mall around 6 p.m. Police detained six juveniles running from the scene but later released them as none possessed a weapon or had visible injuries.

    Shell casings were recovered, Muniz said. Television stations reported that a glass window had been shattered at a sushi restaurant near the theater.

    The shooting happened on Black Friday, generally considered to be one of the biggest retail shopping days of the year, though the large crowds that used to descend on malls have decreased in recent years with the rise of E-commerce and the extension of discounts through the weekend by most stores.

    Hannah Tubbs — whose prosecution on sexual assault charges in 2021 marked one of the biggest controversies of L.A. County Dist. Atty. George Gascón’s first term — pleaded no contest Tuesday in the killing of a homeless man in Kern County, prosecutors said.

    Tubbs, 27, entered the plea to charges of voluntary manslaughter, robbery and witness intimidation in the 2019 killing of Michael Clark near Lake Isabella, according to Kern County Dist. Atty. Cynthia Zimmer.

    Prosecutors filed murder charges against Tubbs last May, months after Gascón faced criticism for allowing Tubbs to be tried as a juvenile for the sexual assault of a child inside an Antelope Valley restaurant in 2014.

    Tubbs was 17 at the time of the assault but wasn’t linked to the attack until 2019, after police obtained her DNA when she was arrested in another state. By the time the case worked its way into an L.A. County courtroom, Gascón had been elected on a reform platform that included a blanket ban on trying juveniles as adults.

    The case exploded into a national debate over criminal justice reform early last year when Fox News obtained recordings of Tubbs bragging about receiving a light sentence on a jailhouse phone call and making crass remarks about her victim, who was 10 at the time of the attack.

    The Times later obtained law enforcement documents largely corroborating the Fox report and Gascón even questioned whether Tubbs, who is a transgender woman, had lied about her gender identity in order to receive lenient treatment.

    “It’s unfortunate that she gamed the system,” Gascón said in an interview with The Times last year. “If I had to do it all over again, she would be prosecuted in adult court.”

    The case led Gascón to backpedal on his juvenile policy and create a committee that could approve requests to try juveniles as adults. The panel has approved only one such case, but a judge later ruled that defendant should still be tried as a juvenile, citing changes in California law.

    The L.A. County district attorney’s office did not respond to an inquiry about Tubbs’ plea. Kern County prosecutors were investigating the homicide at the same time Tubbs’ case was playing out in L.A. County last year.

    In the Kern County case, Tubbs was charged with killing Clark after an argument at a homeless encampment where the two were living in April 2019. Clark’s body was not found until four months later. The local medical examiner’s office ruled that his drowning death was not an accident or suicide, according to Kern County Deputy Dist. Atty. Cole Sherman, who prosecuted Tubbs.

    Sherman said Clark also suffered broken ribs, indicating a struggle.

    Tubbs faces up to 15 years in prison at sentencing, according to Zimmer, who called the defendant a “dangerous individual.”
