    New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields had a blunt reaction after he was benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.  

    Fields, 26, didn’t have much to say as he was going to get a massage, adding that he didn’t have time to talk, the New York Post’s Brian Costello reported. 

    “There’s no reaction. That’s life. S— happens,” Fields remarked.

    Jets running back Breece Hall took issue with how Costello approached Fields at his locker and called him out over social media. 

    “Pathetic move by you (to be honest). Wish some of yall would grow up and stop acting like little kids nagging somebody till they get mad lol,” Hall posted to X.

    The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract, with $30 million guaranteed, to become the starter after releasing Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback has shown flashes this season but has largely struggled.

    In Fields’ nine starts this season, the Jets have gone 2-7. Fields completed 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception. 

    The passing offense with Fields has been anemic, as the quarterback is 29th in the NFL in passing yards. Fields has been outstanding as a rusher, running the ball 71 times for 381 yards and four touchdowns. 

    While Fields is a prolific runner, it hasn’t been enough to offset the team’s passing struggles with him under center.

    Taylor, 36, has appeared in three games and started one this season, when Fields was hurt. The 15-year veteran has completed 62.3% of his passes for 379 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions in limited action this season.

    Head coach Aaron Glenn hopes the switch pays off when the Jets (2-8) play  the Ravens (5-5) – one of Taylor’s former teams – on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

  • Patriots handle AFC East rival Jets at home behind TreVeyon Henderson’s 3-touchdown night

    The New England Patriots continue to roll, handling their AFC East rival New York Jets, 27-14, on “Thursday Night Football.”

    New England extended its lengthy win streak to eight games, improving to 9-2 on the season. Meanwhile, the Jets’ brief win streak, after starting the season 0-7, has come to a close.

    Heading into this game, the Patriots were expected to dominate the Jets. While the scoreboard didn’t say so in the end, their rookie running back certainly provided the fireworks.

    TreVeyon Henderson, who had a breakout game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week with 147 rushing yards and two long touchdown runs, added three more touchdowns to his first-year stat line in this victory. 

    He was the only Patriots player to find the end zone, starting with the team’s 13-play, 69-yard drive that ended with his entire offensive line pushing him over the goal line to tie the game at seven apiece.

    On the Patriots’ next drive, Henderson rushed in from seven yards out to give the Patriots a 14-7 lead to end the first half.

    PATRIOTS DRAW PRAISE WITH STORMY UNIFORM DEBUT AGAINST JETS

    New England started to pull away after quarterback Drake Maye, an MVP hopeful who had yet another great performance, put together chunk completions to set up an eventual touchdown pass to Henderson, who found himself wide open in the end zone.

    Henderson finished the game with 62 rushing yards on 19 carries, while hauling in five catches for 31 yards.

    Meanwhile, Justin Fields and the Jets’ offense struggled in yet another outing despite a great 14-play opening drive that ended with the quarterback rushing it in himself.

    Fields was coming off a rough game against the Cleveland Browns, though the Jets were able to win thanks to two special teams scores. He threw for only 54 yards with a 60.4 quarterback rating.

    Fields was 15-of-26 for 116 yards in this game with a touchdown pass on a broken play to John Metchie III that made it 21-14 in the third quarter. But there were more negative moments than positive for the Jets, including a fumble lost on a low snap in the fourth quarter while the Jets were down just a touchdown.

    The Patriots were able to run the fourth-quarter clock out, and give the home crowd what they were hoping for in Mike Vrabel’s first year as a head coach — a winning season. 

    There is still more work to do, but nine wins put the Patriots above .500.

    Looking more into the box score, Maye was an efficient 25-of-34 for 281 yards with his one touchdown pass to Henderson. Stefon Diggs also led the way with nine catches for 105 yards, a game high, while Mack Hollins and Hunter Henry both caught four passes.

    For the Jets, Metchie was the leading receiver with 45 yards on three grabs, while Breece Hall had 58 rushing yards on 14 carries. Fields had 67 yards on 11 runs.

  • 0-TROCIOUS AGAIN: Winless Jets drop another against Panthers as Justin Fields hits the bench | amNewYork

    EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Justin Fields entered Sunday as the Jets‘ starting quarterback. By the end of the game, he was on the bench, and Tyrod Taylor was under center. None of it mattered. And now Gang Green is 0–7.

    Combined, Taylor and Fields were sacked six times in Sunday’s 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Over the last two games, Jets quarterbacks have been sacked 15 times — as big an indictment of New York’s porous offensive line as it is of the quarterbacks’ overall poor play.

    On the first drive, the hapless Jets set the tone for the atrocious afternoon at the Meadowlands to come when Fields, on 4th and 5 at the Carolina Panthers’ 33-yard line, attempted to throw the ball. He missed Josh Reynolds, and the New York offense began with a turnover.

    Fields threw for just 46 yards as he completed six of 12 passes. 

    Fields was briefly replaced by Taylor as the former was evaluated for a concussion in the second quarter. In the second half, Fields — who was cleared of injury — was nonetheless sidelined; Sauce Gardner, the Jets’ defensive star, wasn’t as lucky, as he was diagnosed with a concussion.

    The first drive was only just the start.

    On New York’s second drive of the afternoon, Fields was sacked for a loss of four yards. After two eight-yard plays (a pass and a handoff), Fields airmailed a throw to Josh Reynolds.

    In the second quarter, Fields was hit hard by Panthers safety Nick Scott, causing a fight to break out. Fields was briefly sent to the medical tent, but returned later in the quarter.

    The Jets tied the game at three on the drive, as Nick Folk nailed a 34-yard field goal.

    New York’s next drive lasted just four plays, as the Jets gained 11 yards.

    On the ensuing drive after the Panthers scored a touchdown to regain the lead, Fields was sacked for a loss of seven. Later in the drive, Fields was sacked for a loss of 10 as the first half came to an end.

    When the Jets’ offense took the field for their first drive of the third quarter, Taylor was under center, as Fields stood on the sideline. 

    “We needed a spark at the time,” head coach Aaron Glenn explained after the game. “I felt it was the right time to do it.”

    Taylor takes over

    On the second drive of the third quarter, Taylor escaped three Panthers defenders and found Tyler Johnson with a deep pass for a 20-yard gain.

    Taylor then attempted two more deep throws. The first was incomplete for Allen Lazard. Next, he attempted to find Reynolds in the endzone, but the pass was intercepted by Jaycee Horn.

    With 4:28 left in the fourth quarter, Taylor tried to find Reynolds, but was once again intercepted by Horn.

    Taylor completed 10 of 22 passes. He threw for 126 yards, with two interceptions.

    Panthers’ offense does just enough

    Though New York held Carolina to just 13 points Sunday, the Panthers’ offense did all it needed to get the win.

    Bryce Young threw 15-for-25 and 138 yards, with one touchdown. After he left Sunday’s game with an anke injury, Andy Dalton completed four of seven and totalled 60 yards. 

    The Panthers settled for a Ryan Fitzgerald 30-yard field goal on the first drive of the game as they picked up 54 yards on 13 plays.

    On Carolina’s fourth drive of the second quarter, Chuba Hubbard brought the Panthers to first and goal with a 26-yard gain. Young completed a three-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Legette to put the Panthers ahead. Fitzgerald knocked in the extra point to give his team a 10-3 lead.

    Fitzgerald added a 29-yard field goal early in the third quarter, as the Panthers took a 10-point lead. They never looked back.

    The Jets will head to Cincinnati next Sunday afternoon to face the Bengals. They have 10 more chances to win a game this year — and increasingly, they are looking like a team destined for the worst kind of football history.

    Meanwhile, Glenn did not indicate who would start at quarterback next week.

  • Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper not fazed by Giants rookie QB Jaxson Dart: ‘Ain’t nothing we haven’t seen’

    The kings of New York are here, and they are 22 and 23 years old. In the span of three short weeks, a rookie quarterback and a rookie running back have revitalized the downtrodden Big Blue with sheer frat-bro energy. They exchange vibrational communication by touching heads like baby elephants, and the quarterback sports a diamond necklace, and the running back does flips in the end zone after touchdowns.

    Their names are Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo, and this New York Giants duo appears to fear nothing. Certainly not head trauma. Dart flung himself noggin-first into an Eagles defender in Week 5, and has been evaluated for a concussion three times in four games. Skattebo got himself ready for games at Arizona State by pounding his helmet against a brick wall. They have infused Jersey with a little Gen-Z flair, and their swagger was enough to bury the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles on Thursday Night Football last week.

    But a stable of Broncos await in Denver on Sunday, ready to kick. This is confidence on confidence. Denver’s locker room has “our Skattebo,” as defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers pointed, in Jonathon Cooper — a muscled-up 27-year-old former seventh-rounder who came out from the locker room at every training camp practice roaring at nobody in particular. And who just won the AFC Defensive Player of the Week. And is part of a Broncos pass-rush that fears nothing, either.

    Certainly not the Giants’ 22-year-old rookie quarterback with his reckless legs and golden flow.

    “I mean, he’s a young guy,” Cooper said of Dart, his nose curling up in a sneer. “He’s feeling himself a lil’ bit. He’s out there running around. He’s got the chain on. He’s dancing. I feel like everybody needs something, you know.

    “But we’ve went against QBs who have ran around in the pocket and who’ve tried to do stuff with their legs,” Cooper said. “So, ain’t nothing we haven’t seen.”

    Skattebo and Dart will bring a heap of earned chutzpah on the plane with them to Denver Sunday. But this Broncos’ defense’s own confidence at every level — and its play-caller’s — is as high as it’s been all season, after sacking Jets quarterback Justin Fields nine times last Sunday. The stat-sheet from London is still burning: -10 net passing yards for the Jets, a fact that prompted a hat-tip from Giants head coach Brian Daboll on Wednesday.

    “They’re just really good,” Daboll said. “They play good coverage, complement it with the front. They disguise well. I mean, they’re as good as it gets right now.”

    Since taking over from former Bronco Russell Wilson in Week 3, Dart has played largely excellent football in a 2-1 stretch, with wins over the Chargers and Eagles. The former Ole Miss QB’s legs have become a major engine to New York’s offense, with 167 rushing yards in that span. He’s escaped pressure with aplomb.

    The Broncos’ pass-rush, however, has seen two of the league’s best scrambling quarterbacks the past two weeks. They turned the Eagles’ Jalen Hurts into a thrower in Week 5 — two carries for three yards — and turned Philadelphia’s offense one-dimensional because of it. Then they turned the Jets’ Fields into, frankly, a shell of an NFL quarterback in Week 6.

    It’s one of head coach Sean Payton’s favorite sayings: Confidence is born from demonstrated ability. This Broncos front has it.

    “We play one of the best quarterbacks twice a year, every single year,” Cooper said Wednesday, likely referring to the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes. “So once you go against that, you kinda get a feel of the game. And, you know what you need to do. You gotta make ‘em feel uncomfortable in the pocket.

    “So, you can’t let ‘em get that confidence and that ego going.”

    Their ego’s going, plenty. And deservedly so. The ability of the Broncos’ core four pass-rushers up front to win one-on-ones — Cooper, NFL sack leader Nik Bonitto, Zach Allen, Franklin-Myers — and the secondary’s ability to win in man coverage on the back-end has given coordinator Vance Joseph the ingredients and the gall of a mad scientist.

    With Denver backed up in their own territory and up two late in the fourth quarter against New York, at the short end of the stick relative to the clock, Joseph sent the house on three of the Jets’ last four downs. Sack. Incompletion. Seven-yard completion. Sack. Ballgame.

  • Broncos-Jets report card: Sean Payton’s offensive slump, sloppy special-teams play nearly down Denver

    The Broncos narrowly avoided a baffling loss to the Jets in London on Sunday with another fourth-quarter defensive stand, improving to 4-2 through six games after a 13-11 victory. Here’s The Denver Post’s report card from the day.

    OFFENSE — D+

    Sean Payton got Bo Nix rolling in the first quarter Sunday, calling for a bunch of quick throws over the middle. Nix looked every bit the same guy who torched the Eagles in the fourth quarter last week, dicing up the Jets for 112 first-quarter yards and a beautiful end-of-quarter drive. And then, in a baffling combination of play-calling and execution, Payton downshifted Denver’s offense into purgatory for three quarters.

    Nix had just a handful of completions after the first quarter. The Broncos had their worst rushing game of the year, with just 40 yards on 14 carries for the steady J.K. Dobbins. Star receiver Courtland Sutton finished with just one catch for 17 yards on three targets, and Denver had just one first-quarter touchdown to Nate Adkins on a secondary breakdown to show for themselves.

    DEFENSE — A+

    This was a “defensive team” today, as Sean Payton said postgame. And as Denver fumbled its offensive identity away with Troy Franklin’s first-quarter giveaway, the Broncos’ pass-rush scooped an entire organization up again, as Vance Joseph’s attack has so often done. Jets quarterback Justin Fields looked like a fawn in the headlights of a London double-decker bus, and the Broncos finished with a ridiculous nine sacks. That’s tied for the second-most in a single game in franchise history, according to StatMuse.

    Don’t forget about the Broncos’ secondary, either, as Pat Surtain II held another top receiver in purgatory in the Jets’ Garrett Wilson. Denver’s linebackers had one of their best games of the season, too, as the Jets’ running backs had just one catch for minus-1 yard and tight end Mason Taylor had one catch for 2 yards. And Talanoa Hufanga continued to fly around like a calamity let loose from Pandora’s box, adding a key third-down pass-breakup on the Jets’ final offensive drive.

    SPECIAL TEAMS — D

    No way else to put it: Darren Rizzi is off to a bad start in his Broncos tenure. There was the Week 2 leverage incident. There have been consistently meh returns on kickoffs for Marvin Mims Jr. and breakdowns in kick coverage. And Week 6 in London was the worst day yet, as the Jets nearly stole a game thanks to Jets special teams coordinator Chris Banjo — an assistant on Denver’s staff last year — out-executing Rizzi for four quarters. New York had a 72-yard kickoff return, outgained a tentative Marvin Mims by 89 combined yards across punt and kickoff returns, and beat the Broncos on one fourth-and-1 fake punt that Rizzi had sniffed out.

    COACHING — D

    Vance Joseph is single-handedly pulling this one up from an F. Again, the Broncos’ defensive coordinator mixed in a variety of pressures and went with a gutsy all-out blitz on a first-down sack on the Jets’ last drive, matching his game-calling perfectly with the Jets’ utter lack of juice in the passing game.

    The Denver Broncos’ defense was firing on all cylinders and played a massive role in the team’s 13-11 victory over the New York Jets in London on Sunday.

    The Broncos held the Jets’ offense to 82 yards on 12 total drives. New York averaged 1.4 yards per play and netted minus-10 passing yards.

    Denver’s offense didn’t have to do too much in the game, but it was Bo Nix’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins in the first quarter that proved to be the biggest difference-maker in the win. The second-year quarterback was 19-of-30 with 174 passing yards. He was only sacked once.

    The Jets’ defense was able to record their first takeaway of the season and force a holding call that resulted in a safety, but it didn’t matter much as Justin Fields led a putrid offense that failed to do much of anything.

    FRUSTRATED GARRETT WILSON GIVES JETS HEAD COACH AARON GLENN AN EARFUL AT HALFTIME

    Fields was 9-of-17 with 45 passing yards. He was sacked nine times and only garnered 31 rushing yards on seven carries. The final sack came on fourth down as head coach Aaron Glenn opted to go for it instead of trying a 62-yard Nick Folk field goal. Fields was swallowed up almost immediately.

    Breece Hall led the game with 59 rushing yards on 22 carries. Josh Reynolds and Garrett Wilson each had three receptions. Reynolds recorded 25 yards while Wilson only had 13 yards. Andrew Beck, Mason Taylor and Isaiah Davis had a reception each.

    Denver didn’t force any turnovers in the win, but it was the pass rush that did the damage. Jonathon Cooper had two sacks and Justin Strnad had 1.5 sacks in the win.

  • Jets QB Justin Fields Gets Honest About First Career Concussion

    After getting off to a strong start with the New York Jets in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Justin Fields suffered a concussion in Week 2 that forced him out of that game and also made him miss last week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

    Speaking of his Week 1 performance, Fields showed major potential. He completed 16 of his 22 pass attempts for 218 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions, while also running for 48 yards and two scores.

    Unfortunately, the concussion forced him to exit Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills after a rough start to the game.

    With that being said, it’s the first career concussion for Fields. The Jets have been hoping to see Fields get cleared to play this week on Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. That has happened.

    Thankfully, Fields will be back on the field against the Dolphins. He spoke out about his first concussion honestly in a recent quote.

    “I had an idea [that I would be cleared], but of course, with this concussion stuff, which it was my first, there are some days you feel good and some days the symptoms come right back. Right now I feel good and hopefully I continue to feel this way when Monday comes,” Fields said.

    Fields continued on, revealing more about what he dealt with due to the concussion.

    “This was my first concussion,” Fields said. “It wasn’t scary, it was just different. Like I said, it was my first one, so I didn’t expect some of the symptoms. I didn’t expect them to be as bad as they were. I’m glad I’m well now and ready to go.”

    Hopefully, Fields will be able to get back to playing like he did in Week 1. Throughout his career, he has shown major flashes of having the potential to be a franchise quarterback. Those flashes simply haven’t translated to consistency.

    It will be interesting to see what the 26-year-old quarterback is able to do in his return against Miami. Right now, New York holds a 0-3 record and badly needs to get into the win column. He’ll look to make that happen.

    The Eagles have acquired their 2nd Quarterback of the free agency period.

    While they had to trade a pair of 2025 7th round picks and drop from 98th to the 120th pick in this years draft when acquiring Pickett from Pittsburgh last week.

    It was only a day later when the Steelers announced they had traded a 2025 6th round pick for Bears QB Justin Fields. Some had wanted the Eagles to pursue Fields as an Eagles backup. However, with only 1 year under contract before a $25.6M 5th-year option (which the Eagles would most likely not pick up).

    Going after Pickett for 2 years with only $4.6M guaranteed is very similar to when they traded a 2022 6th round pick for 2 years of Gardner Minshew, who only cost the Eagles $3.39M.

    With the following Quarterbacks under contract for multiple years

    • Jalen Hurts (2029)
    • Tanner McKee (2027)
    • Kenny Pickett (2027)

    You’d think they’d be done with the QB market.

    There’s nothing to blow out of proportion with the Eagles signing Will Grier. Who will most likely be the 4th QB on the depth chart.

    After Grier spent 2 seasons in Dallas he found himself signed to the Chargers practice squad last December, ending up with Eagles new OC Kellen Moore again. Moore is probably the biggest reason why the Eagles made this move. Bringing in a familiar face for a new system, and will bring competition to both Tanner McKee and Kenny Pickett.

     

    Long Way Till Final Roster Cuts

    Much like the Eagles signing of DeVante Parker, there’s no guarantee we’ll see Grier make it through 53-man roster cuts and could end up on the practice squad. So there’s no reason to overreact to the Eagles weekend signing. We’re a long way from the August deadline.

     

    With the additions of LB Oren Burks, DT P.J. Mustipher, CB Tyler Hall, WR Parris Campbell, between the QB moves this week. The Eagles depth chart is being rounded out with over a month until the 2024 Draft, where the Eagles still hold three picks in the top 55. And have previously made outstanding moves in the draft, including last years Day 3 trade for D’Andre Swift.

     

    As we inch closer and closer to April 25th, who do you expect the Eagles to announce with the 22nd overall pick?

    Bears GM backs Fields, ‘encouraged’ by progress

    FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles expressed support for quarterback Justin Fields during an impromptu news conference inside Gillette Stadium hours before his team beat the New England Patriots 33-14 on “Monday Night Football.”

    “I know Justin has been a big topic and his development,” Poles said. “And we’re encouraged with the progress that is there. It’s not on the statistics and on the paper all the time, but he is getting better in a lot of different areas. I think as a whole, we’ve got to continue to play better around him as well to allow him to keep playing well and get his confidence going and execute at a high level.”

    Fields ranks toward the bottom of the NFL in most statistical categories through his first six games of the season. The second-year quarterback is 32nd in completion percentage (54.8%), off-target percentage (24.4%), sack percentage (13.5%) and pressure percentage (46.2%). He also has the second-worst interception percentage (4.3%) and completion percentage over expectation (-10.7%), according to Next Gen Stats.

    On Monday night, Fields threw for 179 yards with one passing touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown.

    Poles said he will be looking at “a few different things” in his evaluation of Fields over the Bears’ next 11 games.

    “How he’s being used? Are we putting him in the position where he can be successful? And then the execution and the details of what he’s being asked to do and really speeding up to the game and making decisions quicker,” Poles said. “But again, the beautiful thing about football, it’s reliant on everybody else. As a whole, we have to improve, and I think we’ll see that everyone stats to get better and then we’ll start to ascend.”

    In Chicago’s most recent game against the Washington Commanders, a 12-7 loss on Oct. 13, Fields was pressured 18 times, a new career high. Poles expressed concern over the quarterback being hit as often as he has been this season but did not solely pin blame on the offensive line, noting that there is “room for improvement” for Fields in getting rid of the ball faster.

    “I would say that when you watch the tape, there is give-and-take on that,” Poles said. “I think it’s a little bit of executing faster. But then there are also some protection things that need to improve, as well. So it’s really a holistic view that needs to improve for him to stay upright.”

    Poles was hired in January and led the Bears through the beginning stages of a rebuild during the offseason. The general manager opted to spend Chicago’s top two draft picks on cornerback Kyler Gordon and safety Jaquan Brisker, both of whom have started every game through six weeks.

    The general manager did not second-guess his decision to not invest more in the offensive line and receiving corps while expressing unprompted praise for rookie left tackle Braxton Jones, whom the Bears selected with a fifth-round pick.

    “No. To speak on that, I have been happy with where Braxton is,” Poles said. “I think he’s a young player. There are going to be ups and downs, for sure. And these defensive lines are like no joke. So he continues to grow, he continues to get better. There are going to be ebbs and flows with that. I think Lucas [Patrick] has done nice things for the culture of our offensive line. You guys have talked very early about Justin getting hit and not seeing like him being back. That’s improved. And we are going to continue to move things around and see if we can get that front to jell and continue to improve.”

    When asked about potentially upgrading Chicago’s receiving corps with the Nov. 1 trade deadline approaching to improve the play around Fields, Poles said, “I think regardless, we’re always going to be active in the terms of if it’s making phone calls or picking up the phone and just seeing if that is something that can improve our team and it makes sense for us, not only for now, because I’ve always talked about this, it’s sustaining success for a long period of time. It’s not the short fix all the time. Just blending that together is tough because it takes a lot of discipline to do. So that’s what we’re balancing.”
