  • Sarah Jessica Parker on More ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Hocus Pocus 3’ and Calls ‘The Family Stone’ Sequel a ‘Bittersweet Quandary’ Following Diane Keaton’s Death

    [ad_1]

Sarah Jessica Parker isn’t saying no to anymore “Sex and the City,” but it doesn’t sound like she’ll be reprising Carrie Bradshaw anytime soon.

SJP told me Tuesday at the Golden Eve gala in Beverly Hills that she’s up for reprising her beloved fashion-obsessed character, but it all depends on one person and one person only – “Sex and the City” creator Michael Patrick King.

“I hear lots of very original ideas, all lovely and well intentioned and often very clever, but the only thing that really matters is what excites Michael Patrick King. And right now he’s just not thinking about that,” Parker said.

Parker made a rare appearance on the West Coast to be honored at the starry Golden Eve dinner and awards ceremony with the Carol Burnett Award. She hit the carpet with husband Matthew Broderick and their actor son James Wilkie Broderick before reuniting with “Sex and the City” costars Kristen Davis, Evan Handler and David Eigenberg.

Parker also offered an update on the much-anticipated third installment of the “Hocus Pocus” franchise. “They’re working on it,” Parker said. “Where Better [Midler] goes, I go. Bette is like a 13-year-old girl with a new bike. She’s like, ‘I have wheels, let us travel.’”

And then there’s the ongoing efforts to make a sequel to “The Family Stone,” which co-starred the late Diane Keaton.

“I’m so excited…but it’s a rather bittersweet quandary given the loss of Diane Keaton,” Parker said. “But it was a very special group of actors, and prior to Diane’s passing, there had been conversations with everybody, so I hope that we’ll be able to. The hardest thing is everybody’s schedules.”

Golden Eve also presented the Cecil B. DeMille Award to Helen Mirren.

The evening was filmed for a primetime special airing Thursday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. The 83rd Golden Globes will air on Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. PT on CBS and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.

  • Hudson Williams on the ‘Heated Rivalry’ Finale, That Improvised Sex Scene and Shane’s Talk With His Mom: ‘That Ruined Me the Most’

    [ad_1]

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains details about Episode 6 of “Heated Rivalry,” now streaming on HBO Max.

“Heated Rivalry” has everything a primetime drama could ask for – very hot men, romance and, of course, sex. But what really sold star Hudson Williams on the series was the quiet yet heavy scene in the Season 1 finale that shows Shane’s mother (Christina Chang) asking her son for forgiveness for not allowing him to feel safe enough to come out to her sooner as gay.

“That scene was the scene that ruined me the most when I read the script,” Williams tells me. “It was the scene that I was like, ‘If I don’t get to play Shane Hollander.’ It’s also a scene that’s not in the book, but to me it is the quintessential wrap-up scene to that arc for him and his mom. Period.”

For those who may not already know, “Heated Rivalry” is Jacob Tierney’s six-episode adaptation of Rachel Reid’s queer hockey romance novel series “Game Changers.” The show, acquired for U.S. distribution by HBO Max from Canadian streamer Crave, follows Shane Hollander and Ilya Rosanov (Connor Storrie), two superstar hockey players who fall in love as they navigate a secret years-long affair. The show has been greenlit for a second season.

The mother-and-son scene filmed over two days. “The first time we couldn’t get through it because it started raining,” Hudson recalls. “And then we came back the next day to shoot it, Jacob goes, ‘I rewrote it.’ So Christina and I are in the little makeup room of this little cottage, memorizing the scene, and it was so beautiful. It made so much sense. It stands on the right side of what I think a parent should be because there are outdated notions. There are old school ways of parenting that maybe we can leave in the past…As someone who thinks of raising their kids in the future and wanting to be a father, this is the environment you have to foster.”

We truly don’t know until we see her accept him if she is going to accept him or reject him. Will she be like, “You’ve just ruined your career?” But in the end, she’s talking about how this could be good for endorsement deals.

Shane gets a release to a degree, but I’m not sure it’s a full one. I think there’s still a degree to Shane where it’s like, a part of me wanted a bigger release. I remember leaving and going, “I wish I could pour myself into it and completely get vulnerable.” As an actor, that’s never really been that hard for me. I was retroactively trying to figure out why am I not fully able to get this. But then, I was like, “Oh, it’s Shane who isn’t able to get that fully.” It’s a little bit of a release he gets but even still, he’s avoiding her a little bit. He can’t look her in the eyes and feel completely like he’s lived to all the standards of what he thinks this unwritten idea of what a man is between them.

I love that Ilya was the first to say, “I love you.” He said it in the Russian monologue, but that doesn’t count for Shane because he didn’t know what Ilya was saying.

    The motherfucker beat me.

Were you surprised he said it first?

Yeah, but even though Shane doesn’t say it first, he says all these things that are, if they’re not love, what the fuck are they? You know, “Let’s start a foundation.” He’s staying up in the middle of the night plotting their way. When Ilya says, “You think that far ahead, Hollander?” “I do about this.” Hollander is not a planner. He’s a diligent worker. He’s someone who is routine — dial in, show up in the game today, show up in practice right now. Forget in five years. Be the best hockey player now. It’s out of character to let this game plan run so far ahead. But it is because he loves Ilya so dearly. So I think he, even though he didn’t say it first, he made that cottage a home for Ilya to be able to say it.

I thought the cottage was going to be, excuse my French, a fuck fest. But this was more about the emotional journey and being a couple.

Jacob Tierney recently said it — it’s boyfriend.

But then there’s the blowjob scene. That was comedy.

    That was improv.

    What?

Yeah, to a degree. Connor and I were kind of goofing off in the makeup trailer, which was a cottage that was a two-minute drive away from that cottage, getting ready. I was preparing my monologue the whole morning. I’m prepping it, working it. Then Connor, being the great scene partner he is, he was like, “I’ll be here doing this.” Then he did something and we were hitting each other, goofing off. Then he’s hitting me, hitting me and he did this slap. I was filming myself on my phone doing this. I was like, “Do that again.” I couldn’t hold in my laughter because it was so brilliant. It’s so funny, and it makes sense for where they’re at in the story. I remember showing that to the intimacy coordinator. She was cackling. She’s like, “You have to do that.” Then Jacob was like, “Go for it. Go crazy.” The first take was the first time I broke broke because Connor is taking all the liberties. I am shoving him. I’m slapping him back. I’m putting the phone away to get in the gasps and moans. I’m so happy with how that scene turned out.

Shane and Ilya are finally comfortable with each other enough for that. They’ve let their guards down.

I heard Jacob say earlier today, “That’s boyfriends.” You don’t get the blow job on the phone from your fuck buddy or your friends with benefits. You get that when you’re in a relationship. In Episodes 1 and 2, it’s lust — it’s charged and fast. But now we have humor and levity within the sex.

What was it like filming in the cottage for the first time?

It’s when sentiment of the show really matched the sentiment of where we are in filming. That was the last two days of shooting. The last scene we shot was Ilya talking about his mom when he’s on my lap. I remember the first time we walked through there, I was like, “Damn right, Mr. Real Estate! This is a pretty nice cottage.” That was finally where Shane can be as boring as he wants and as fun as he wants. He gets to be everything. They have those two weeks.

And then you literally ride off into the sunset.

It’s still bittersweet. A lot of people have said that’s a very happy ending, but I’m like, “This isn’t a straight story.” This is not the happy ending because they’re still in the closet. They’re not coming out to Reebok, they’re not coming out to anyone. They got caught. It looks more like forgiveness than pride. That’s where they’re at. Forgiveness implies there’s something that was wrongfully done.

There’s shame around being caught. Just the word “caught” implies something to be ashamed about.

And they were just kissing. They’re not fucking butt naked on the countertop.

Do you have any plans to leave the internet?

I have been periodically leaving the internet. I touch into the internet. I try to stay gone, but very luckily, it’s been pretty warm. The hateful comments are easy to disregard to a degree because they’re coming from such vile places of bias or they’re just obnoxious. It’s closer to trolling than it is criticism.

Also, “Heated Rivalry” is not reality. It’s like a good rom-com where we get to fantasize about love and romance.

    It’s optimistic.

It’s OK to be optimistic. So many people just want to be negative.

Even queer storytellers sometimes want to double down on pessimism. I think the reason why our show is doing so well is it doesn’t want to reinforce the worst fears.

    Do you like tuna melts?

I do, but I don’t eat carbs or cheese. But as a treat, I’ll take a tuna melt with a nice brioche.

This Q&A has been edited and condensed.

  • Duffer Brothers on ‘Stranger Things’ Theatrical Release: ‘A Dream of Ours for a While’

    [ad_1]

The Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross, call the upcoming theatrical release of “Stranger Things” is “dream” come true.

As previously reported, the two-hour series finale of the series – the last episode titled “The Rightside Up” — will premiere on Netflix and in more than 350 movie theaters on Dec. 31, starting at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET, playing through Jan. 1. This marks the first time an episode of a Netflix series will also be exhibited theatrically.

“This has been a dream of ours for a while,” Ross told me Thursday night at the world premiere of the series’ fifth and final season at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

Netflix announced the plans just days after Variety published an interview with Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria in which she insisted the streamer had no plans to release “Stranger Things” in theaters. “A lot of people — a lot, a lot, a lot of people — have watched ‘Stranger Things’ on Netflix,” she said. “It has not suffered from lack of conversation or community or sharing or fandom. I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want.”

Praising Bajaria for her “poker face,” Matt said, “Ross and I just folded. The truth is…this was in the works for a long time. Netflix came to us with the idea. It was their idea to have the finale on a separate day and we thought that was cool, specifically because we thought we could pitch this movie theater idea, which we had never pitched before, honestly.”

He continued, “It never really made sense to us because everyone will always ask about it. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s kind of not fun because no one’s in sync. People will have seen the episode, some people won’t have seen the episode, it’s not the same. This actually recreates and is a real movie moment because everyone’s experiencing it at the same time together. I think that’s what we’re excited about it and it’s the first time we had that opportunity.”

Star Millie Bobby Brown explained that she wore a black custom Rodarte gown to the premiere as an homage to the end of the series. “It’s for the funeral of the show,” she said. “This dress kind of embodies the darkness of the show this season. I’m really excited for everyone to see how dark it gets. I hate to say it because I say it every season, but this is definitely the darkest and the more intense season.”

  • ‘Twinless’: James Sweeney on Why He Wrote a Letter to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Toe-Sucking and Working With ‘Chameleon’ Dylan O’Brien

    [ad_1]

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers from “Twinless,” now in theaters.

James Sweeney has a thing for twins. In his new quirky dark comedy, “Twinless,” he and Dylan O’Brien play Dennis and Roman, two men who form an unlikely friendship when they meet at a support group for people whose identical twins have died.

In one scene, Dennis is shown watching Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in their 1995 comedy “It Takes Two.” Sweeney, who wrote and directed “Twinless,” reached out to the former child actors with a letter. “I think I espoused my love for them and begged them to use their likeness from the classic ‘It Takes Two,’” he recalls. “Incidentally, they’re not playing actual twins in the movie. They’re just playing people who look identical to each other.”

Since the film’s premiere at Sundance earlier this year, many have been assuming Sweeney has a twin in real life – he doesn’t. “I think twins were very much embedded into the cultural zeitgeist of my childhood,” he explains. “It wasn’t just the Olsens, but also ‘Sister, Sister’ and ‘The Parent Trap.’ And for me, being a military brat and having to hop around and start over a few times, I think it was sort of that fantasy of the perfect best friend who shares your sentences and wants to do all the activities you want to do. It was very appealing to me.”

O’Brien not only plays Roman but also portrays his twin, Rocky, in flashbacks. “I wanted somebody who I believed would have the versatility to pull from different characters, not just in terms of physical and emotional transformation, but also tonally, comedic and dramatic. I think that’s something that Dylan has in spades,” Sweeney says. “And even though I felt confident in that, getting to know him and then developing the film and working with him, it really surpassed my wildest dreams. I think he’s truly a chameleon, which I find to be rare in somebody who is also a more traditional, charismatic leading man actor. I think that’s what makes him so special.”

While a lot of attention has been paid to Dennis and Rocky’s sex scene, there’s another very intimate moment Sweeney and O’Brien haven’t talked about until now. While Dennis is giving Roman a foot massage (their friendship becomes quite a codependent bromance), he begins to suck one of his toes.

“I had a pillow over my face the whole time because I was cracking up,” O’Brien says, before pointing out, “I also scrubbed my toe in the bathtub beforehand.”

Sweeney says, “That was the easy part of the day. There were so many other things going on in that scene that I was more concerned about. I was more preoccupied with the shots that followed in terms of my emotional preparation.”

The actors had plenty of time to get comfortable with each other. O’Brien had been attached to the project for about four years before the film finally got greenlit. “It was similar on my first feature [2019’s “Straight Up”]. They had similar time spans in terms of how long the projects go from inception to production,” Sweeney says. “I think my batting average is like seven, eight years. I’ll claim the positive adjective, which is resilience. But maybe stubbornness would be the other side of that coin.”

“I would say what was different between this and my first project is I met David Permut, my producer, in 2019 and Dylan in 2020. So this one I shared the pain of pushing it uphill for all those years, which then also made sharing the fruits of the labor so much more rewarding,” he continued. “But I also think it’s a story that speaks to me. I love movies about friendship. The themes of loneliness, as well as identity and forgiveness, are concepts I’m really interested in.”

Sweeney has also spent time working in television, most notably as a writer on Gloria Calderón Kellett’s Prime Video comedy series “With Love.” “I love TV,” Sweeney said. “‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ is the reason I am who I am. I think TV is an interesting place right now. I think right now I’m focused on film, but I’m trying to figure out where my voice fits in TV in a way that works in the marketplace.”

  • ‘Izzy’ Documentary About Late Fashion Designer Isabel Toledo Begins Production (EXCLUSIVE)

‘Izzy’ Documentary About Late Fashion Designer Isabel Toledo Begins Production (EXCLUSIVE)

    [ad_1]

Production has begun on “Izzy,” a feature documentary about late fashion designer Isabel Toledo.

Directed by Chiara Clemente, the film will chronicle Toledo’s life with her husband and creative partner Ruben Toledo.

“I trust Chiara to tell our story,” Ruben said in a statement on Monday. “She sees our love; how unique and rare it is. And, as an artist herself, she has such insight into the creative process. I am honored that she is making this documentary about the love of my life.”

Both Cuban immigrants, Isabel and Ruben rose to prominence in the fashion and art worlds of New York City in the 1980s. Isabel died in 2019 from breast cancer. She was 59.

In 2009, Isabel famously designed the dress that Michele Obama wore to Barack Obama’s inauguration. “I knew that what I wore to my husband’s first inauguration would go down in history,” the former first lady wrote in an email to the New York Times at the time of Isabel’s death, “so I wanted something that would not only live up to the moment, but would also stand up to the freezing cold of that January day.

“With her incredible creativity and masterful talent, Isabel designed a beautiful lemongrass outfit that I just loved,” she continued. “She more than met the moment — for that day and for all of history.”

Isabel’s memoir “Roots of Style: Weaving Together Life, Love, and Fashion,” which included illustrations by Ruben, was published in 2012.

“I am honored and humbled to tell the story of Isabel and Ruben, two people so joined together that you never saw one without the other…until she passed,” said Clemente, whose credits include directing “Our City Dreams,” a 2009 documentary about five women artists in New York City, as well as several shorts and works for museums, galleries and brands. “I am excited to share the inspiration they have given me with a broader audience who will, no doubt, find joy and optimism in their rare love story.”

Ruben is set to announce that “Izzy” is in production at Monday’s Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards ceremony in New York City, where he will receive the CFDA’s newly-named Isabel Toledo Board of Directors Tribute award.

Executive producers of “Izzy” are David Dinerstein and Robert Fyvolent of Mass Distraction Media, the same team behind the Oscar-winning documentary “Summer Of Soul.” Additional executive producers include New York City publishers and culture chroniclers Kim Hastreiter, Paige Powell and Visionaire co-founders Cecilia Dean and James Kaliardos, all of whom have known the Toledos since their early days in New York City.

Composer Thomas Lauderdale of the band Pink Martini will produce the film’s musical score, which will include collaborations with established and emerging Cuban artists.

Clemente’s credits include directing “Our City Dreams,’ a 2009 documentary about five women artists in New York City, as well as several shorts and works for museums, galleries and brands.

  • Donald Trump Movie Director Is Staying at Trump’s NYC Hotel, Says Their Suite Is ‘Dirty’: ‘It’s Not as Luxurious as You Would Think’

Donald Trump Movie Director Is Staying at Trump’s NYC Hotel, Says Their Suite Is ‘Dirty’: ‘It’s Not as Luxurious as You Would Think’

    [ad_1]

Ali Abbasi, the director of the controversial Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice,” has checked himself into the Trump International Hotel & Tower for the film’s New York City premiere.

“I feel like this is Trump International, and I’m International, and I did a Trump movie. So I think this is a marriage made in heaven,” the Iranian-Danish filmmaker said with a laugh Monday afternoon during a Zoom video call from his hotel room. “Also, I was curious. I wanted to sort of experience the Trump luxury, but it’s not. It’s not as luxurious as you would think.”

Abbasi gives a quick tour of the room. He points to a basic white floor lamp. “It’s not really a Trump lamp,” he said. “It’s very basic. The floor is not super clean. The outlets are a bit dirty. This is not very impressive for an executive suite. By my education, I’m an architect and this is not the kind of thing you expect from Trump.”

Abbasi realizes that his hotel stay could be viewed as a publicity stunt more than anything else. “I’m thinking it should be whatever helps the movie,” he said. “If I need to scale up the building, I’ll do it. But I have to say there is this strange pleasure of sitting under his name and writing on a piece of paper with his name on it.”

Variety has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.

The film, starring Sebastian Stan as the former president during his younger years as a real estate developer in New York City and Maria Bakalova as his first wife Ivanka, premiered at the Cannes film festival in May. At the same time, the Trump campaign threatened legal action over the movie with a spokesman blasting the film as “garbage” and “fiction.”

Trump lawyers also sent a cease and desist letter warning the team behind the movie not to pursue a distribution deal.

“The Apprentice” includes depictions of Trump popping amphetamine pills, getting liposuction, having surgery to remove his bald spot and a scene in which he violently throws Ivanka to the ground and proceeds to have nonconsensual sex with her.

Abbasi has maintained that he’d welcome the chance to screen the movie for Trump as well as talk to him about the project. “I feel like if I was in a fight with Sid Vicious, I wouldn’t want to go and talk to his lawyers,” Abbasi said. “I would want to go and throw a cake in his face because it’s punk rock. I want to answer punk rock with punk rock. I don’t want to go down the boring way.”

Abbasi said he has not extended an invitation to the premiere to Trump or his children.

The film’s New York premiere takes place Oct. 8. Along with Abbasi, Stan, and Bakalova, Jeremy Strong, who plays Trump mentor Roy Cohn, is expected to be in attendance.

“The Apprentice” is in theaters only on Oct. 11.

  • ‘Perfect Couple’ Premiere Red Carpet Swarmed By Gnats: ‘You Have a Bug on You!’

‘Perfect Couple’ Premiere Red Carpet Swarmed By Gnats: ‘You Have a Bug on You!’

    [ad_1]

The Perfect Couple” could be renamed “Attack of the Gnats.”

Swarms of flying insects invaded Netflix’s red carpet premiere of “The Perfect Couple” on Wednesday night at the streamer’s Egyptian Theatre Hollywood.

If the hot and sticky weather wasn’t bad enough, the cast – including Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Meghann Fahy – suddenly found themselves swatting away gnats about an hour into the carpet.

“I think one just bit me,” Schreiber said, smacking the back of his neck.

Noticing several bugs on this Variety reporter’s shirt, Fahy said, “You have a bug on you!” When she turned around to see the gnats crawling on the light blue step-and-repeat, Fahy groaned, “Ewww! I don’t like that. I don’t like stuff like that…We gotta leave L.A.”

Later, swatting away the bugs, Fahy said, “It’s so unhinged. We’re gonna swallow one.”

The nasty insects were also seen flying around the lights positioned behind the carpet. “It’s the lights,” one Netflix staffer said. “They’re attracted to the lights.”

It seems even the gnats in Hollywood want their time in the spotlight.

The buggy situation was reminiscent of a cockroach that made its way onto the carpet at the Met Gala in New York City in 2023. Video crews and photographers captured the roach creeping up the carpet before it was unceremoniously stepped on by someone stationed at the front door of the museum.

“The Perfect Couple,” based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, stars Kidman as a best-selling novelist and matriarch of a megarich New York City family. Her seemingly perfect brood begins to unravel when, just hours before she was to host her son’s wedding at their Nantucket estate, someone is found dead on their property.

The six-episode series, which also stars Schreiber, Fahy, Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor, Dakota Fanning, Billy Howle, Ishaan Khattar, Sam Nivola, Mia Isaac, Donna Lynne Champlin, Michael Beach and Isabelle Adjani, streams on Netflix on Thursday.

  • Selena Gomez on Filming ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Spinoff: ‘Felt Like I Was Home Again’

Selena Gomez on Filming ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Spinoff: ‘Felt Like I Was Home Again’

    [ad_1]

It’s been more than 12 years since “Wizards of Waverly Place” ended in 2012 after four seasons, but reuniting for the spinoff, “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” it was if no time had passed for stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie.

“It felt like I was home again,” Gomez told me Thursday at the “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 premiere in Hollywood. “I’m so happy I got to bring back this childhood gift that I was given to new little ones out there.”

When the original “Wizards” came to a close, Gomez never thought she’d play Alex Russo again. But now she’s hoping the spinoff will be a multi-season run. “We don’t know, but if people like it, we’ll see,” she said.

David Henrie, who reprises his role as Alex’s brother Justin, told me, “Selena and I and my wife spent so much time over the years drinking wine and talking about where the characters would be, we looked at each other at one point and said, ‘I think we have a show. I think we should go talk to Disney about this.’ And we did. It took years of development to get it exactly where it needed to be.

“It came out of a place love,” he continued. “The number one thing Selena gets asked about even till today is ‘Wizards.’ It’s a show that meant a lot to a lot of people.”

Gomez announced the spinoff during Disney’s 2024 upfront presentation in May. Images from the show were released at the same time showing grown-up versions of Alex and Justin along with new Russo family members.

“It was bonkers,” Henrie said of working with Gomez again. “It was unspoken but we were behind a door and heard, ‘Action,’ we looked at one another and were like, ‘This is crazy.’ It was like a day hadn’t passed in 12 years. We were right back to where we were.”

“Wizards: Beyond Waverly Place” follows an adult Justin, who has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). When Alex brings Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) to his home seeking help, Justin agrees to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.

Henrie is also looking forward to the potential of more seasons: “It’s such a fertile universe. You could do so much.”

Henrie is using his original wand in the spinoff. When the show ended in 2012, producers gave the wands framed in glass as wrap presents to the cast. “I was like, I am gonna break this sucker out again,” Henrie said.

  • ‘The Sympathizer’ Star Sandra Oh on How the HBO Series Shows the Vietnam War Through the Vietnamese Lens: ‘This Perspective Has Been Missing for 50 Years’

‘The Sympathizer’ Star Sandra Oh on How the HBO Series Shows the Vietnam War Through the Vietnamese Lens: ‘This Perspective Has Been Missing for 50 Years’

    [ad_1]

The upcoming HBO series “The Sympathizer” is bringing an unsung voice to a story that has been told and retold from the American point of view, providing actors like Sandra Oh a chance to finally be involved in a project that puts the Vietnamese refugee experience into focus.

“This perspective has been missing for 50 years,” said Oh, who plays the recurring role of Sofia.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the miniseries boasts a majority-Vietnamese cast and crew, including celebrated “The Handmaiden” director and screenwriter Park Chan-wook and esteemed “The Joy Luck Club” actress Kieu Chinh.

Many of the acclaimed talent included are making their American film debuts, and others are getting their big breaks on the international stage. Duy Nguyen was raised in Hanoi, Vietnam, and later immigrated to Montreal, Canada. His story encapsulates Oh’s commitment to the series.

“He has such a deep emotional connection to this project,” Oh related. “He moved to Canada 10 years ago. Then he read ‘The Sympathizer’ when it came out and [he was] 15 or 16. Because he was learning English, he read it like 10 times. His journey from that to this momentous moment right here – to be fulfilling his potential and the depth that he brought [to the role] – that kind of stuff is what I’m all about.”

She added that the authenticity brought by actors like Nguyen allows portrayals that “metabolize very, very deep, painful stories on behalf of many people.”

Nguyen said that being in a project that includes “Vietnamese language and culture [was] a dream.”

“[The cast and creative team] all felt this responsibility to make this the best that it could be, because we finally have a moment to shine,” he continued.

“The Sympathizer” follows the character of Captain (Hoa Xuande), a North Vietnam operative who is a plant in the South Vietnam army. After he is forced to flee to America and take up residence in a refugee camp, he continues to spy for the Viet Cong.

“It’s really nice to finally see a story that’s led by a Vietnamese cast – to be able to tell their stories in their own way, and to have them at the forefront of this project,” Xuande said, going on to explain that as serious as the topic is, the show is a unique meld of a black comedy and a spy thriller. “These stories that [audiences are] about to see are just as devastating, just as riveting, just as traumatic, but also just as exciting and wonderful and funny.”

A producing collaboration that included A24, Rhombus Media and Robert Downey Jr.’s Team Downey spent years bringing the project to fruition.

“Reading the [novel] just [showed] how history books have only told one point of view, the American point of view … And the thing that was so exciting about the book was it was [another] point of view, and it was actually about real, ideological conversations,” executive producer Amanda Burrell said. “It felt urgent that we had to get out there and tell it.”

The story was especially personal for Chinh, whose life includes fleeing the Viet Cong twice – first when relocating from North to South Vietnam at the beginning of the war, then later to America when North Vietnam was about to invade Saigon. Her journey is one of many experienced by Vietnamese refugees in the 1960s and 70s, real-life struggles that “The Sympathizer” shines a light on.

“So many stories have not been told,” Chinh said. “We should make history alive again to remind people what [cruelty] war has made.”

“The Sympathizer” premieres on HBO and Max April 14.

  • ‘Shōgun’ Stars on the Challenges of Acting in Seven Layers of Clothing and Adopting Sailor Accents: ‘All the Detail Is So Important’

‘Shōgun’ Stars on the Challenges of Acting in Seven Layers of Clothing and Adopting Sailor Accents: ‘All the Detail Is So Important’

    [ad_1]

Amidst the chaos of a fire alarm going off and security ordering (and later calling off) evacuations on the red carpet of the “Shōgun” premiere on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, the stars of the new FX series still found the time to share their experiences working on the most recent adaptation of James Clavell’s 1,200-page novel.

Acting in a show like “Shōgun” — which features numerous fight sequences and tense dramatic scenes — would not be considered a relaxing task to most. But for Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the lead role and serves as a producer, being in front of the camera was a “simple” task compared to his producing duties.

“As a producer, I prepared everything before I go to set, so when I was acting in front of the camera, it was so relaxing … It was so fun. I felt like it’s a reward,” he said.

Sanada found producing to be a much more stressful task but said that making these small adjustments made all the difference when it came to achieving authenticity: “All the detail is so important to introduce our culture correctly. The words, movement, position of the teacup, position of the sword — every movement or every detail changes a lot.”

Rooted in real history, “Shōgun” follows Sanada’s Yoshii Toranaga on his quest to become the shōgun, the military leader of the nation, joined by his translator Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) and English ally John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis).

To accurately reflect the time period, the actors had to not only do historical research — with some studying their characters’ real-life counterparts — but also engage in physical training. Though the series includes a number of action scenes, physical training wasn’t just about combat. Sawai said one of the biggest challenges for her was learning to walk while wearing her character’s costumes. For 10 months, she wore up to seven layers of clothing at times, in addition to having a wig on with a thick ribbon on it: “I remember coming out of it and having to get treatment on my shoulders because they were so buffed up.”

To get into his character, Jarvis attempted to research how his character would have spoke English during that time period. He first looked into historical linguistics, and then looked for audio recordings of sailors from as early as he could find. After modeling his voice after one of the sailors, he found it did not fit the archetype outlined for Blackthorne in the script, and co-creator Rachel Kondo suggested he make his voice lower.

“I started again, and I modeled him on my father because my father was a merchant sailor. I figured maybe there’d be something in common,” he said.

Of working with the primarily Japanese cast — a rare occurrence for an American production — Jarvis said, “It was nice to be around such pride in the telling of this story because these people are based on real people from their history. That set the bar of the level of of care that had to be taken and the level of effort that had to be given to try to maximize what this could be together.”

Sawai said that she was used to seeing portrayals of Japanese women in Western media and thinking, “That’s not me. That’s not us.” However, she said Kondo and co-creator Justin Marks did not want to “fantasize anything”: “They showed everything in a way that as a Japanese viewer, I can relate to.”

“This is the first thing that I’m probably going to be able to talk to my friends about and not make any excuses that we did something a little off,” she added.

Sanada said he wants “Shōgun” to serve as an example to Hollywood of how to tell stories from another culture authentically.

“That’s why I am hoping this 2024 version of ‘Shōgun’ will be a big footstep to the future. I hope it’s gonna be a new normal style to create another culture’s story,” he said.

  • Inside Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Concert Film World Premiere with Lizzo, Halle Bailey, Janelle Monáe and More

Inside Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Concert Film World Premiere with Lizzo, Halle Bailey, Janelle Monáe and More

    [ad_1]

Beyoncé captivated Hollywood’s attention Saturday night as the superstar held a stealthily staged world premiere of her concert movie, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The movie, which documents her Renaissance World Tour, will be released in the U.S. on Dec. 1 via major exhibition chains, including AMC, Regal and Cinemark. Beyoncé fans have noted that Dec. 1 also marks World AIDS Day – the singer dedicated her “Renaissance” album to her late cousin Johnny (she refers to him as “Uncle Johnny”), who died of AIDS-related illness.

Details of the premiere were kept under wraps, with guests invited with a save-the-date that only included the screening’s 7 p.m. start time and a “cozy opulence” dress code. The location, which turned out to be the Goldwyn Theater, was provided less 24 hours before the start of the festivities. Guests were advised to take a ride share to an address in Beverly Hills, where they were directed to the location of the screening. The “chrome carpet” kicked off at 5:30 p.m. Among the attendees were Lizzo, Janelle Monáe and Beyoncé’s former Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Also on hand were “The Little Mermaid” star Halle Bailey, Ava DuVernay, Tyler Perry, Issa Rae, “Blackish” star Marsai Martin, Laverne Cox, Niecy Nash-Betts, Gabrielle Union, LeToya Luckett, former BET Networks chief Debra Lee and model-musician Shaun Ross.

Beyoncé walked into the theater as the lights were dimmed and an announcer reminded guests that no photos or video recordings were allowed. Phones were locked in security bags.

Silver envelopes containing a travel-size a sample of Beyoncé’s perfume were placed at everyone’s seat. Popcorn was served in metal Renaissance buckets with water offered in matching cups.

A premiere is also scheduled for Nov. 30 in London.

While Beyoncé made a surprise appearance at Taylor Swift’s Los Angeles premiere of her concert film, the “Karma” singer is currently touring in South America and unlikely to make Queen B’s event. However, Swift appears to be free to attend the London festivities.

A “Renaissance” trailer released in September featured footage of Beyoncé rehearsing with eldest daughter and tour backup dancer Blue Ivy Carter as well as her and Jay-Z’s twins, Rumi and Sir. Jay-Z is also in voiceover asking his wife about her plans for the tour.

The latest trailer was released during a spot on NBC’s telecast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.

As Variety reported exclusively, Beyoncé is distributing the film directly with exhibition giant AMC Theatres, as well as other exhibitors.

Beyoncé chose an unconventional deal like the one struck between AMC and Swift in August. Swift’s film was self-financed and she will reportedly see well over 50% of box office grosses Beyoncé will get the same deal, sources told Variety.

The Renaissance tour kicked off on May 10 in Stockholm before concluding on Oct. 1 in Kansas City, Missouri. Live Nation announced in October that the global trek earned more than $579 million worldwide, with 2.7 million fans attending across 56 dates in 39 cities.

Beyoncé’s previous concert films include the direct-to-DVD “I Am…Yours,” filmed live at Las Vegas’ Wynn Casino in 2009; the 2013 HBO project “Life Is But a Dream,” a confessional account of new motherhood mixed with live performances from her grand opening performance at Atlantic City’s Revel Casino; and Netflix’s “Homecoming,” which captured Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella headlining set.

Beyoncé’s foray into feature film acting includes “Dreamgirls,” “The Lion King,” “Austin Powers: Goldmember” and “Obsessed.”
