Denver and Aurora saw record fires break out the week of July 4th

Most metro residents were probably not at work on Independence day.

They may have been with family instead, or skipping town, or staring up at the sky, enjoying or absolutely hating the fireworks that blanketed Denver for a few days.

But local firefighters were working. A lot.

They told us they responded to a lot of blazes, but that was anecdote, not data.

We wanted to know how this year’s damage compared to recent memory, so both Denver and Aurora’s fire departments shared records to help us find out.

The 2024 July 4th holiday was record breakingly bad for fires.

During the week spanning Monday, July 1, to Sunday, July 7, both Denver and Aurora’s departments recorded more fires than in any other week in the records they provided.

Denver’s data goes back to 2017. Aurora’s goes back to 2021.

Aurora’s numbers showed the most jarring uptick that week, quadrupling the average 23 fires per week to 108.

Each column represents numbers of fires in one seven-day week, starting on Mondays.

While Aurora Fire spokesperson Dawn Small said 2020 was also pretty rough, she could not provide information prior to 2021. The department switched data systems that year, which means older numbers are not comparable to 2024.

Denver’s record week reached 232 fires, not quite as dramatic as Aurora’s. The city usually sees more around July 4th, and sometimes at the end of the year, but 2024 still represents an eight-year high.

Our second-worst fire week on record was in May 2020, as protests over the murder of George Floyd continued around Civic Center.

Each column represents numbers of fires in one seven-day week, starting on Mondays.

July 4th tends to be the worst for holiday fires, but officials say fireworks aren’t the entire problem.

While there tend to be more fires on a holiday when the skies are filled with explosions, investigators don’t always find evidence they were caused by those explosions.

Of 47 incidents that Aurora’s department saw on the Fourth of July this year, Small said they only six were suspected of being caused by fireworks.

“The numbers this year would not exclusively have been due to a potentially higher usage of fireworks. It could have been due to a variety of possible factors including anomalies,” she wrote us.

Most of these are small grass or trash fires that get less scrutiny than more serious events, which can take months to be investigated.

Denver Fire spokesperson JD Chism told us his department clears about 66 percent of cases.

While it’s likely some fireworks-related burns never get labeled as such, he said you should give credence to common sense: Just look at when these spikes are happening.

Both Chism and Small said they’re not aware of any incidents of fireworks setting a blaze that killed someone. Investigations into injury or property damage can lead to criminal charges.

Climate change, of course, is making things more dangerous.

On Thursday, the U.S. Drought Monitor released a new map, which pegged the metro mostly in “moderate drought.”

Russ Schumacher, Colorado’s state climatologist, said things have gotten drier since their last update.

“The Front Range has been very dry since the beginning of May,” he wrote us. “I think we’re pretty fortunate that we haven’t seen any real big fires yet, given how hot and dry it’s been. March and April were quite wet along the Front Range, so we may still be benefiting from that.”

Heat waves are increasingly common and extreme in this state.

“Obviously weather and climate don’t cause fires to start, but they can set the stage for fires to grow,” Schumacher added. “As always, it’s important for people to take care with fire and fireworks.”

A pile of garbage, including a lot of spent fireworks, in the parking lot of Force Elementary School in Mar Lee. July 7, 2024.

Some Colorado counties have recently banned fireworks as a result of these increasingly dangerous conditions.

They’ve long been illegal in Denver, though Denver Police rarely ticket people for using them.

Aurora has a standing fire ban that, once a year, they consider suspending for a few weeks, to let people to enjoy their Fourth of July fun. Small said they decide based on three metrics related to how much foliage could burn and the U.S. Drought Monitor’s maps.

This year, the foliage numbers were in good shape, and the map didn’t look so bad back in June. Aurora suspended their ban this year.

  • Best Bets: Star-Spangled Salute, To Be or RPG LIVE! and Body Double

Best Bets: Star-Spangled Salute, To Be or RPG LIVE! and Body Double

It’s the weekend to let freedom ring, and we’ve got plenty of Independence Day activities for you to check out, not to mention a little more Americana, including the music of country legends and a classic kids’ baseball film. Once you get your fill of July 4th festivities, we’ve also got an Oscar-winning animated film, a live role-playing game, and an erotic thriller from 1984. Keep reading for more on our picks for this week’s best bets.

If you’re looking for the perfect setting to celebrate Independence Day, may we suggest heading over to the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens for their annual Fourth of July Celebration on Thursday, July 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. The afternoon of family-friendly festivities includes an art workshop; readings of the Declaration of Independence by actors from Brave Little Company (not to mention the chance to sign the document with a quill pen) and of Faith Ringgold’s We Came to America; costume expert Tommy Attaway talking about what the British and American armies wore and carried during the American Revolution; and live musical performances from acts like the Lonestar Bluegrass Band and the Houston Brass Quintet. Admission to the celebration is free, and be sure to tour the first floor of Bayou Bend while you’re there.

Or, if you’re interested in celebrating Independence Day with the rest of the city, you’ll want to make your way down to Eleanor Tinsley Park on Thursday, July 4, from 4 to 10 p.m. for Freedom Over Texas. The fun includes a dozen acts scheduled for a concert – including Chapel Hart, Jo Dee Messina and headliner Russell Dickerson – which will start at 7 p.m. And because we know this is probably the most important question you’ll have – the fireworks are scheduled to start at approximately 9:35 p.m. Tickets to the festivities are available online here and at the gate for $10 (with kids five and under set to get in free). If you’re not inclined to party with around 50,000 Houstonians, you can also catch the action at home on ABC13.

It’s no secret that the national anthem of the United States is no easy song to perform. For every classic performance, say Whitney Houston at Super Bowl XXV back in 1991, there’s a Kat DeLuna, and a Fergie, and a Christina Aguilera. But if you want to hear a version that won’t disappoint, head out to Miller Outdoor Theatre on Thursday, July 4, at 8:30 p.m. for Star-Spangled Salute. Houston Symphony, at the baton of Conductor Jason Seber, and tenor Rafael Moras will celebrate Independence Day with a program full of patriotic hits, including “God Bless the U.S.A.,” “America the Beautiful” and The Stars and Stripes Forever. Tickets for the free show can be reserved here, but if they’re no longer available, you can always sit on the no-ticket-required Hill.

Hayao Miyazaki, the director of films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, came out of retirement to make The Boy and the Heron, a film that went on to win this year’s Oscar for Best Animated Film. Though at times an “unwieldy tale of a 12-year-old boy coming to terms with his mother’s death,” the film is “a strikingly beautiful, densely detailed fantasy,” and you can catch it on Friday, July 5, at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Additional screenings are scheduled for Saturday, July 6, and Thursday, July 11, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 7, at 2 p.m. Note that the July 7 showing will be dubbed in English while all the other screenings will be in Japanese with English subtitles. Tickets to any of them are available here for $7 to $9.

If you’re one of the many fans of the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, but you sometimes find it lacking in Shakespearean characters and references, Classical Theatre Company (CTC) has been answering your prayers Monday nights on Twitch during To Be or RPG. The livestreamed D&D play series features regulars from CTC with an added theatrical flair befitting the company’s focus on classics (with proceeds benefitting the company). The cast and crew will open season two of the series in-person and in front of a live audience on Saturday, July 6, at 8 p.m. with To Be or RPG LIVE! at The DeLUXE Theater. And don’t worry – no experience with D&D or season one of the web series is needed to enjoy the show (or the drinks, which will be provided by Saint Arnold Brewing Company). Tickets are available here for $8.

We wouldn’t want to try picking the best country artist of all time, though Rolling Stone certainly did when they put together their list of the “100 Greatest Country Artists of All Time.” On Saturday, July 6, at 8:30 p.m. you can hear classics from some of those “one-of-a-kind” list-makers– like Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams – when the Houston Symphony returns to Miller Outdoor Theatre for The Legends of Country. The concert, which will also include music from more contemporary artists like Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill, will also feature the vocal talents of Patrick Thomas (The Voice) and Rachel Potter (The X Factor). The show is free and you can reserve tickets here starting on Friday, July 5, at 10 a.m. As always, no tickets required to sit on the Hill.

What better way to commemorate America’s birthday weekend than with a 31-year-old cult classic about America’s pastime? The one that includes the classic line, “You’re killing me, Smalls!” We are, of course, talking about The Sandlot, a “nostalgic tale of a group of boys playing baseball and hanging out in the summer of 1962” written by David Mickey Evans (also the director) and Robert Gunter. The 1993 film “became a beloved hit on VHS cassette and television” and “a pop-culture staple of the 1990s,” one that is “quotable,” “memorable” and “re-watchable.” On Sunday, July 7, at 8 p.m. you can catch a screening of the film over at Home Run Dugout-Katy – and the best part? The screening is free.

Filmmaker Brian De Palma is widely considered one of the great auteurs of the 1970s, so when he set out to make “the most erotic and surprising and thrilling movie I know how to make,” of course he succeeded. The New York Times said of the resulting film, Body Double from 1984, that De Palma “goes too far, which is the reason to see it,” saying the unapologetic homage to Alfred Hitchcock is “sexy and explicitly crude, entertaining and sometimes very funny.” On Wednesday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m., you can catch De Palma’s “exhilarating exercise in pure filmmaking” on the big screen when Alamo Drafthouse shows the film as part of their Film Club, meaning you can stay after for an optional group discussion about the movie. Tickets can be purchased here for $11.

Did You Know This About The 4th Of July

It is the big American holiday – but did you know these things?

The 4th of July is when the US celebrates its Independence Day. It is the huge summer holiday filled with bbq, fireworks, parades and more.  But did you know these things about the holiday?  The first organized celebration took place in 1777 in Philadelphia and Boston.  Four years later, Massachusetts made it an official state holiday. It wasn’t until almost a hundred years later when made it a federal holiday in 1870.  It was part of a package including New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Almost 87% of people plan to celebrate the day.  A whopping 47% plan on purchasing alcohol as one way to mark the founding of the country.  Beer is the top choice, followed by wine and then alcohol.

But despite those big numbers – did you know this is the most popular thing about the holiday – fireworks. They were there at the beginning and remain popular with 60% looking to watch the show. And not just the planned community as seen on TV fireworks. Since Covid, firework sales in America have grown to $2.3 billion, local American pyromaniacs spent three times more on fireworks in 2023 than they did in 2012.

And did you know blue is one of the hardest colors to make in a firework? The Italians in the 1800s figured out how to add colors. Putting metal salts which would glow and emit bright colors when heated created the dazzling spectrums of lights. While the boom is made by the explosion of gunpowder, the snap, crackle and pop are made with a little chemistry. The campfire-like crackle comes from small granules of bismuth compounds. The granules burn quickly, one after the other, giving the famed crackling sound.

The holiday is filled filled with food and 58% of the country will be grilling or barbecuing.  Grocery stories are making a killing selling top favorites of burger patties, hot dogs, deli salads, vegetable trays and mixed fresh vegetables, and potato chips (in that order). In a survey, ketchup is a top condiment for burgers followed by mustard, then mayo. When is comes to what to put on the burger cheese is at 67%, followed by lettuce then tomatoes.

For extreme eating, Nathan’s National Hot Dog Eating Contest can fill you up! The first was held in 1972 and continues at the original location on Coney Island. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the competition was dominated by the Japanese, but winners have branched out since. It is part of Major League Eating (MLE), the organization overseeing professional competitive eating events and television specials. While there are 150 million hot dogs eaten on the 4th, the world record at the contest is 76 within 10 minutes. Condiments are not allowed.

While the Flintstone’s did a July 4th special when they were in prime time (pre-streaming), the holiday also received a classic Rankin Bass stop-motion special. They squeezed the famous holiday characters Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer into a special to save the 4th. They mixed in a circus, magic, Mrs. Claus and more.

On the other end of the entertainment spectrum is the famous Boston Symphony Fireworks concert. Started originally in 1929 with the first free Esplanade Concert, it was revived in 1974 and continues on TV to the delight of music lovers.

And lastly, did you know this about the 4th Of July? For the romantic minded, the backdrop of fireworks, beer and burgers make the 4th the 10th most popular day for marriage proposals.

Marijuana helps your brain relax, focus and be in the moment.  Fireworks and concerts will be more alive, more vibrant and engage your mind in ways alcohol will not. But avoid mixing the two, you don’t want a messy end of the day.

Holiday stress can happen with family members, travel, traffic and crowds. Microdosing can help reduce the anxiety while focused on the task/activity at hand. Research has shown THC at low doses, 2.5-5 mg, reduces stress. Vapes and gummies are discreet, easy ways to consume and manage the dose without broadcasting to the crowd around you.  It an be a perfect way to deal with the extra bumps during the holiday.

The 4th is a big drinking holiday.  While marijuana might make you a bit more tired the next day, you want have the hangover where your head throbs and pounds for part of hte day.  Additionally, if you decide to drink instead of consume, marijuana’s anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and nausea-reducing properties can help make hangovers more bearable. Its ability to boost energy and improve sleep can also help to alleviate those unpleasant hangover symptoms.

RELATED: The Best 4th Of July Cocktails

If you are traveling via air, vapes and gummies are the easiest and most discreet things to pack in your luggage.  During the flight, a gummy is the least noticeable and can make the middle seat way more tolerable.

Fireworks and pets are not compatible, but you should never give THC to an animal. Rather, consider CBD, which can be made specifically for animals to help them during fireworks to remain calm.

All in ally, have a great holiday weekend and maybe a little green to the red, white and blue.

The 2022 model of Samsung’s Frame is still an excellent TV — and a top choice of our readers. Unlike the 2024 model, you don’t get Pantone validated color accuracy, but you do get a gorgeous 4K TV that doubles as a work of art on your wall.

Going with the older model can really stretch your TV budget — it’s up to $1,500 off at Samsung right now for the Fourth of July. Prices start at $550 for the 32-inch TV.

Is the 2024 Samsung Frame TV worth it?

In a word, yes. For the first time, all sizes of the Frame TV are now Pantone validated. Are on the screen looks even more authentic and like an actual painting — just as the artist intended. You’ll see more detail and more accurate colors than ever before.

Even better: Samsung is offering a curated selection of 20 art pieces each month that Frame owners can display for free. But if you subscribe to Samsung’s Art Store ($5.99 per month), it now includes access to more than 2,500 artworks from world-renowned museums and galleries.

The TV is also more energy efficient. Thanks to a dynamic refresh rate, you use less electricity when you’re viewing art. (When watching video content, the TV’s regular refresh rate is 120Hz.) This works in conjunction with the TV’s motion sensor, which turns off the TV when nobody is in the room.

Everything we love about the Frame TV (see our full review of the 2023 edition) is still on offer in this updated 2024 version. You’ll enjoy a 100% color volume that takes full advantage of Samsung’s Quantum Processor 4K. TV shows, movies, sports or whatever you’re watching all showcase stunning, bright and accurate colors. The matte finish of the display virtually eliminates unwanted glare.

And thanks to the Frame’s broad viewing angle, wherever you’re sitting in the room, you’ll have a clear view. As always, you can buy an optional, magnetically attachable bezel to make the Frame TV look like it’s in a traditional picture frame. You can choose the bezel design (between $200 and $300 each) that matches the decor of any room. A company called Deco TV Frames also offers bezels for the Frame TV on Amazon.

  • Using CBD To Keep Your Dog Calm During Fireworks

Using CBD To Keep Your Dog Calm During Fireworks

While their pet parents celebrate Independence Day – dogs suffer during the fireworks…but CBD can help.

The 4th of July brings out food, BBQs, parades and fireworks. It is a great day with lots of fun, except for man’s best friend. While we watch in wonder at the brilliant displays (and try to get one decent picture), dogs are suffering and can be a bit freaked out. They have exceptional hearing and fireworks booming sounds are full and unexpected, this can disorient a dog and make them very anxious. If left untreated, thunder and fireworks can continue to upset the animal. It is possible using CBD to keep your dog calm during fireworks can make it a better day for your furry friend.

RELATED: The Best Hydrating Cocktails For A Hot Weekend

Fireworks were at the first organized celebration of Independence Day in July 4th 1777. Starting the tradition in the US, fireworks are used around the globe to for independence days, New Year’s Eve, and other major events. But animal control facilities experience a 30% increase in missing pets between July 4 and 6, with July 5 being one of the busiest days for shelters.  The poor things are frightened by the loud, unpredictable booms. But how do you enjoy them without traumatizing your puppy?  Consider using CBD.

Photo by R+R Medicinals via Unsplash

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. Most CBD products are derived from hemp and rather than marijuana. CBD doesn’t have THC and can provide relief without the high.  A CBD for pets is recommend based on the dosage being for a pet size rather than a person size. A method of medicating your pet with cannabis is by using a CBD oil and rubbing into their ears. CBD-infused treats do not get pets high, but can relief stress, but they need to consume it at least 40 minutes before the start of the fireworks/noise.

The American Kennel Club shares CBD can be used because of it’s of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact. If you are going to use CBD for your pet, here are some suggestions

    • Look for organic. If the CBD oil is not organic, it at least should not contain pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.
    • Don’t only shop based on price. Higher quality and purity are usually associated with a higher cost. A cheaper option could contain toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals. Make sure your CBD oil is free of additives.
    • Get the analysis. The manufacturer should provide a certificate that certifies the amount of CBD that is in the product. Many CBD products contain only small amounts of CBD. You’ll also want to make sure there is little or no THC in the product.
    • Buy CBD as a liquid. You can buy dog treats containing CBD, but the best form to administer is an oil or tincture. This way, you can adjust your dog’s dose drop by drop.

RELATED: Should You Use Cannabis Instead Of Ice For Injuries

Like alcohol, marijuana should not be given to pets. It can cause cause toxicity in cats and dogs. While some people find it funny to get animals high, it can be extremely dangerous for them and is not funny at all.

Miki Sudo put away 39.5 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes to win the women’s competition of the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest for the ninth time Tuesday. Sudo fell short of breaking her own record of 48.5 hot dogs and buns, which she set at the Independence Day event in 2020.

Sudo, 37, faced stiff competition from Mayoi Ebihara, 27, who devoured 33.5 hot dogs and buns to finish in second place. Michelle Lesco, 39, finished in third place after eating 24.25 hot dogs and buns.

Sudo and Ebihara seemed to have finished much closer at the end of the livestreamed competition. As judges were tallying the official results, they chatted with each other, shook hands and hugged before Sudo was declared the winner.

Fifteen women tried to scarf down as many hot dogs and buns as they could late Tuesday morning on an outdoor stage set up on New York’s Coney Island near the area’s amusement park and boardwalk.

Last year, Sudo polished off 40 hot dogs and buns to win the contest.

The men’s competition is scheduled to be held Tuesday afternoon.

The contest was delayed from starting at its scheduled time of 12:30 p.m. Eastern because of weather. The National Weather Service said strong thunderstorms were expected in the area and urged people to seek shelter inside a building.
