Jordan Klepper Has a Front Row Seat To The End Of The World

Jordan Klepper has lost count of how many Trump rallies he’s attended. “We’re probably in the 30 range,” he says over Zoom. “Yeah, it’s a blur.” As the Daily Show’s resident rally-goer, Klepper has carved out a niche by picking the brains, or lack thereof, of Donald Trump’s most ardent and ridiculous supporters. “I got these front row seats to the end of the world,” he says.

In a new special titled The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse: Rally Together that airs Monday, October 28 at 11:30 PM, Klepper returns to the field weeks before the most consequential election of our lifetime. But this time, he’s bringing friends. Playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris, Guys We Fucked podcast hosts Corinne Fisher and Krystyna Hutchinson, and Reno 911’s Thomas Lennon accompany Klepper at various Trump rallies to see firsthand what the right has wrought.

A correspondent on The Daily Show since 2014, Klepper admits that by some estimations, he fell on the sword by becoming the show’s go-to rally guy. “When people started asking other correspondents if they wanted to go into the field, their responses tended to be, ‘Fuck no.’” But Klepper had a different reaction. “I’m truly curious,” he says, about Trump supporters. “One of the main things I do when I go out there is like, ‘Tell me why you like this person. Tell me what you’re excited about.’ Really asking them to articulate why they are there dressed in a cape with a giant foam Donald Trump hat on. I want to know why.”

To connect with the people he interviews, Klepper relies on his decades of experience performing improv comedy at Second City in Chicago and then the UCB Theater in New York. “The tenets of improvisation are about saying yes,” he says. “When you’re doing compelling man-on-the-street interviews, you’re making people feel comfortable so that they share and you create something that is revealing. And I do think a lot of that starts in improvisation.” The Daily Show’s rally segments are so successful largely because Klepper approaches all of his subjects with an improviser’s open heart. “A journalist has to stay neutral,” he notes. “Oftentimes in a MAGA-verse, that comes across as confrontational. CNN gets a lot of people who think they’re getting into a fight with them. One of my tactics is to really make them feel comfortable to say yes, and have them find a place that is as compelling and more real.”

Klepper is aware that his aesthetic and his Kalamazoo roots might help his interviewees feel comfortable. “Trevor [Noah] used to always joke that, ‘Yeah, we sent you in the field because you’re a white guy,’” Klepper says. “I think there’s a lot of truth in that. I have a Midwestern sensibility, and a big, tall, lanky white guy at a Trump rally often invites people to come up and engage.

“I can’t help but look like I just came from a fishing trip,” he adds.

Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood Jr. come to Orlando for some serious comedy

Daily Show stars and comedic firebrands Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood Jr. are teaming up to say hello/goodbye to “America, for the Last Time” in December.

Billed cheekily as “a comedic town hall that digs into the issues that matter and many that do not,” Wood and Klepper are taking their show on the road to just two cities [so far announced] in this newest leg of their duo tour: Brooklyn in November and Orlando in December. A Q&A portion of the evening is tantalizingly hinted at.

Both are longtime Daily Show correspondents who have branched out into a multiplicity of solo endeavors — stand-up tours, documentaries and solo specials. And both embody deadpan [Klepper] and exasperated [Wood Jr.] humor like few others.

“America, for the Last Time” comes to the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center on Dec. 7. Tickets are on sale through the venue.

  • Jordan Klepper Recalls His Favorite MAGA Comment And It’s A Doozy

Jordan Klepper Recalls His Favorite MAGA Comment And It’s A Doozy

    [ad_1]

Jordan Klepper has endured his fair share of wild moments with Donald Trump supporters during his MAGA field reports for “The Daily Show.”

But one comment stands out above many, the correspondent recalled in previously unseen footage filmed last week during his stint guest-hosting the Comedy Central program.

Klepper remembered talking to a woman during Trump’s first impeachment for trying to extort Ukraine. The then-president was blocking witnesses, including former national security adviser John Bolton, from testifying.

The woman insisted to Klepper that Trump was “innocent,” hadn’t done anything wrong, and said that if he had erred then he would be trying to hide it.

Klepper asked if blocking testimony would be an admission of guilt.

Klepper told her Trump was blocking testimony.

“And she takes this very long beat, she thinks about it, and she says, ‘I don’t care,’” he said.

The woman was “being completely honest in that moment,” he added, noting how when people’s politics become tied up with their identity it’s almost impossible to change their minds.

“They don’t give a shit about the new piece of information,” he said.

Noem boasted that her granddaughter, who is almost 2 years old, already owns two guns ― and a pony named Sparkles.

“When my kid was little, I was covering outlets, locking cabinets and cutting grapes in half because they might be a choking hazard,” Klepper said during his Monday night monologue. “Kristi Noem is like, ‘Here’s a shotgun. You’re on watch tonight. Sic semper tyrannis!’”

Klepper said people on the left and right alike should be able to agree on at least one thing when it comes to guns.

“You should not own a gun if you don’t know how to poop in a potty,” he said.

    Then he addressed Sparkles directly.

“Sparkles, this will not end well for you. These people are clearly insane,” he said. “Run while you still can ― there is no time for goodbyes. Go, my friend, go!”

After playing another clip of Noem, Klepper’s advice to Sparkles grew even more urgent.

“Seriously, Sparkles, this family is fucking nuts!” he warned. “Get out of there! Trust no one! Sic semper tyrannis!”

He also played a montage of speakers at the NRA event blaming gun violence on everything but guns ― and showed exactly where this line of false logic has taken the nation:

  • Jordan Klepper Heckles George Santos About Volleyball At Trump Arraignment

Jordan Klepper Heckles George Santos About Volleyball At Trump Arraignment

    [ad_1]

Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) tried his hardest to appear esteemed in front of reporters Tuesday — only to be heckled for his fabricated past.

The lying lawmaker joined extremist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) rallying in Lower Manhattan to support former President Donald Trump ahead of his arraignment when he was confronted by dozens of journalists — and a “Daily Show” correspondent.

Santos, who is under investigation for falsehoods about his heritage, education and work history while campaigning for office, had just finished berating reporters while claiming he supported “the rule of law” when a familiar voice interrupted.

“George, are you finally bringing legitimacy to this process?” Klepper asked, per footage posted on Twitter. “George, we wanna hear about your volleyball career. George! George! George, speak up! We wanna hear the legitimacy you’re bringing to the process!”

Santos appeared not to mind the swarm of attention, chiding the group of journalists: “Is this how the media behaves?” He continued speaking until someone on his team announced: “That’s enough!” Clearly, it wasn’t for Klepper.

“George, are you worried that this is becoming a circus?” Klepper yelled. “George, talk about your time running a circus! George, thank you for your service!”

The embattled House member has famously been caught in an epic web of lies, falsely claiming he was a descendant of Holocaust survivors from Ukraine, that his mother died on 9/11 — and that he was a Baruch College volleyball star who “slayed.”

Santos told reporters Tuesday that “this isn’t about me” and that he was there “to support the president of the United States who’s been unfairly attacked by our DA.”

Klepper was there to remind him of his legacy.

“Tell us about your volleyball career, we need to know,” said Klepper as Santos started walking away, per footage posted on Twitter. “Have you recently got a law degree, is that why you’re here? Are you bringing legitimacy to this process, finally? Are you?”

“Talk to me about your law degrees — which law degrees have you got that you’re bringing here to this?” Klepper continued. “As first president of the United States, do you feel that you can actually handle the jurisprudence that’s going on?”

“George, George,” Klepper reiterated, “talk to me about your volleyball, George.”

Santos departed the courthouse throng soon afterward, telling a reporter the scene “was too chaotic and he felt threatened.”

‘It’s Scary’: Jordan Klepper Reveals What’s So Worrisome About Trump Supporters

    [ad_1]

“Daily Show” correspondent Jordan Klepper has spent years at Donald Trump’s events speaking to some of his biggest supporters ― including many who believe in wild conspiracy theories.

    And it’s not getting better.

“I’m still surprised at these events, which should be worrisome to everyone,” he told former RNC chair Michael Steele on MSNBC on Thursday. “The fact that there are still ideas out here that go beyond what I’ve already heard at many, many of these events, it deeply concerns me.”

Klepper attended a Trump event in South Carolina over the weekend where he found supporters who don’t believe Biden is really in charge; that he has a fake presidential seal; that there are two militaries, one of which is controlled by Trump; and that the war in Ukraine doesn’t exist and the refugees fleeing the violence are actors.

“There are folks out there that will deny reality to its face,” he told Steele on Thursday.

Steele asked later in the segment if he found the views among Trump supporters have evolved at all.

“No, there’s there’s no evolution of ideas,” he said. “There’s devolution of ideas, and that’s where the scariness arises.”
