Heartbreaking way Jonnie Irwin’s kids were told he’d died and why they didn’t have a final kiss and cuddle with their dad

The devastated children of Jonnie Irwin weren’t “blissfully unaware” their dad was dying but didn’t have tearful final kisses and cuddles with the doting A Place in the Sun star, his wife has shared.

Jess, who shared sons Rex, five, and four-year-old twins Cormac and Rafa with Jonnie, has also revealed the moment she told the little boys their dad had died and “gone to heaven”.

Why Jonnie Irwin didn’t tell his children he was dying

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Jess said she and Jonnie took the decision not to destroy their sons’ happiness by telling them outright that he was dying.

She said that Jonnie reasoned: “If you’ve only got a short time left why spend it in mourning and confusion?”

However, they knew that Jonnie was unwell, even if the word death wasn’t mentioned.

“The boys weren’t blissfully unaware. They heard me say hundreds of times: ‘Daddy’s sleeping’. They knew he’d lost his hair because he was having treatment and that no, he couldn’t go down the big slide because it might hurt him. But we didn’t want to put scary thoughts in the boys’ little heads,” she shared.

Instead, Jess revealed they’d come home from school and nursery and she’s send them upstairs to show Jonnie.

However, she said one day eldest son Rex “just wandered in and kissed Jonnie’s hand while he was sleeping”. She added the she thinks Rex had “sensed the energy had shifted a bit”.

And, she said, Rex doing that “of his own accord” would’ve meant more to the TV star than “forcing all the boys to cuddle him”. She said if that would have happened her husband “would have sobbed and it would have been a terrible memory”.

How Jess told the boys he was gone

Turning to the moment that she told the boys about Jonnie’s passing, Jess said she approached it with Rex first. Then she told her younger twins.

“I told Rex first, that Daddy had gone to heaven, in the sky, and he ran out of the room and hid. He said: ‘Why can’t the spaceman bring Daddy back?’ Then I told the twins. They asked: ‘How did the angels carry him up to the sky?’ I said: ‘Angels have special powers.’ It was all toddler talk. The conversation will change as they get older.”

Rex has now told Jess that he can speak to his dad, but only at night, through a special pair of sunglasses. He told her he can use them to “see into space” and, if he presses a button, he can “see Daddy and this one lets me hear him talk”.

“Goodnight my favourite. Thank you for everything. I will always love you. The hardest day has come, a day I prayed wouldn’t come. He has given me more than I could ever have wished for, 8 bonkers years of love and adventure and 3 amazing boys. I will continue to make you proud but only with your love still finding me and guiding me for the rest of my life, me and the boys still need you.

Jonnie you really were the most handsome man I ever knew and I am so sorry for this cruel end. It really wasn’t fair and you didn’t deserve any of this. You gave so much time to others and touched everyone you met, I have never experienced anything like the effect you had on people. I love you so much and forever proud of you xx.”

    BBC tribute to ‘extraordinary man’

The news comes after a statement from the BBC on Friday in which the broadcaster shared its sadness over Jonnie’s death at the age of 50.

In a statement, Rob Unsworth, Head of BBC Daytime and Early Peak Commissioning, said: “Jonnie Irwin was an extraordinary man and wonderful presenter. He brought such warmth and fun to Escape to the Country, where he was a firm favourite with not just viewers, but the production team too.

“More recently, he did some truly inspirational reports for Morning Live about his illness, tackling taboos around end-of-life care, and wonderfully demonstrating the limitless positivity that he brought to everything he did.

“His kindness will be hugely missed by everyone he worked with, and we are sending all of our thoughts to his family and friends at this sad time,” he then concluded.

Jonnie joined the show back in 2010.

A special Escape to the Country special, in tribute to Jonnie, will air at 3pm on BBC One today (February 5).

  • Jonnie Irwin previously revealed how he planned to spend his final days before his death aged 50

Jonnie Irwin previously shared an absolutely crushing update about how he would spend his final days after revealing his death could happen “at any time”.

The former A Place In The Sun presenter was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer that had spread to his brain in August 2020. Jonnie’s death was announced on Friday February 2 in a statement released by his family.

Last year he had spent time in a hospice to deal with chronic pain in his back, an illness that has zapped his energy, leaving Jonnie tired.

The presenter shares three sons – Rex, five, and twins Rafa and Cormac, three – with his wife Jessica. And he was determined to share as many “good times” with his young family as he can.

Jonnie Irwin shares ‘cruel’ health update

Speaking to Hello! in June 2023 Jonnie shared a crushing update on his health. He had travelled to Turkey for treatment, which did shrink a lot of his tumours. However, in what Jonnie described as a “cruel blow”, it damaged his liver. And it couldn’t be repaired.

He said: “It’s blocked in a place they can’t operate on, so there’s no point fighting the cancer elsewhere if the liver’s not working. It’’ a cruel blow.”

And apparently, I’ll go peacefully when I do go. I’ll just require more and more sleep.

Speaking about his death, Jonnie added: “It can happen at any time. I’m here to stop it for as long as possible.”

The star said that he did experience “pain” due to the cancer, and he removed himself from the family because he’s “not good to be around when I’m in pain”. He added that he didn’t want his boys to “see me like that”.

Where Jonnie will spend his final days

Jonnie admitted that he wanted to spend his final days at the family home in Hertfordshire. However, two years ago, they moved to Newcastle so they could be closer to Jessica’s family, explaining he doesn’t want her to be “on her own”.

Jonnie also revealed that he had come to terms with the fact that he was then too sick to work. But he was conscious that he didn’t want to spend his last days working. Instead, he wanted to be at home when he died – and he was told that it would be “peaceful”.

“I don’t want to spend the last days working when I could be with my family,” he said. “I really want to be at home and Jess is fine with that. And apparently, I’ll go peacefully when I do go. I’ll just require more and more sleep,” he said.

“At this time, we kindly ask for the privacy of Jonnie’s family as they navigate through this profound loss. Their grief is immeasurable, and your thoughts, prayers, and support are deeply appreciated.

“As we remember the beautiful moments shared with Jonnie, let us celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will forever be etched in our hearts. Jonnie may be gone from our sight, but his love, laughter, and memories will live on.
