So How Exactly Are the Jonas Brothers Going to Play 5 Albums Every Night?

    [ad_1]

Nearly two decades into their careers, Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas are embarking on the most ambitious Jonas Brothers tour yet, and over the weekend they kicked it off with two sold-out shows at Yankee Stadium. The band, fronted by the brothers and rounded out by an ecosystem of collaborators and touring musicians, was joined by a few special guests, including Jimmy Fallon, who led the crowd in a rendition of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” during the intermission of Sunday’s show.

The tour is coming off the group’s newest release, The Album, a collection of songs playfully referencing ’70s and ’80s music and cowritten and produced by Jon Bellion. But with an eye toward the band’s deep fan base, every night’s show will also include nearly all the songs from its four most loved albums, starting from 2007’s Jonas Brothers. Ever since the band’s 2019 reunion, Jonas Brothers shows have included the group’s biggest hits from the Disney Channel days. But earlier this year, during a five-night run of Broadway shows, the musicians discovered a new appreciation for the deep cuts, which sound even more timeless now that pop punk is a lingua franca uniting artists in rock, rap, and country. The brothers, now in their 30s, were teenagers when they wrote their early albums, but with time, it’s become clear that the Jonas Brothers helped shape a generation with their brand of hook-focused power pop featuring catchy guitar riffs and sly asides.

From Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Jonas Brothers.

“The show is really something special,” Kevin told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “It’s a journey through our lives so far, you know? It’s cool to see people that know all of our music and fans that are on the newer side experience all this, this journey of our lives together.”

Before the weekend, the brothers sat down to explain the logic behind taking a trip down memory lane and revisiting five albums in one night. As Kevin himself noted on Twitter earlier this summer, it’s so many songs. If you add in all the other must-plays, it’s about 67. But they’ve managed to get it down to about three hours, and it’s a show that’s engaging for hardcore and casual fans alike.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Vanity Fair: You’re fitting so much music into one night. Were you thinking about doing it chronologically, Taylor Swift Eras-style? Or a bit more like what Beyoncé is doing with Renaissance, blending new and old thematically?

Joe Jonas: It’s a blend of all of those things. We know that we’re going to have a lot of newer fans coming to the show, as well as the OG fans who know the earlier albums. So we have the new album spaced throughout the set. We also have a lot of songs that were not necessarily part of albums—singles or songs from our individual projects—so we have a lot to play with. We wanted to build a really theatrical show that takes you on a musical, emotional journey if you’re a fan or not. We wanted to create a space where you’re just happy to be there, almost like the DJs up there mixing songs together. There’s a lot of medleys, because we can’t fit all of every song. What was the word we came up with for them?

If there’s one thing this year has proven, it’s that people are genuinely excited to get dressed up and go out — maybe moreso than ever before. From the Barbiecore fashion craze that’s dominated the real-life looks of theater-goers to the legions of fans who have put their love for musicians like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift on full (and fashionable!) display at their record-breaking world tours, it’s clearly no longer enough to just show up to special events — you’ve also got to show out with a memorable ensemble to match. And while this summer has been especially iconic on the fashion-front, it appears the trend of thoughtfully coordinated looks won’t be slowing down anytime soon — especially with the Jonas Brothers set to embark on a major world tour of their own.

ICYMI: everyone’s favorite boy band will be kicking off their Five Albums, One Night World Tour on Aug. 12 in New York. Much like Swift’s Eras Tour, the event will take fans through a musical journey that spans multiple decades and albums, starting with their debut record, “Jonas Brothers” (a true win for the “S.O.S.” girlies), and continuing on up until their latest album release, “The Album.” On TikTok, fans have been getting excited for the occasion by brainstorming different concert outfit ideas that’ll pay homage to the unique aesthetic of each album, as well as the individual styles of Nick, Joe, and Kevin — including but not limited to that iconic fedora that Joe so devotedly wore throughout the band’s Disney years (here’s to hoping it’ll make a return this tour, as well).

Joe Jonas Shares a Horror Story Starring White Pants and Gastric Distress

    [ad_1]

Therapy is a wonderful, powerful tool. Without it, Joe Jonas may not have ever found the strength to wear white pants again. It’s often about processing and digesting the past, then letting it go. Jonas knows.

In an interview published Friday on the Will & Woody podcast, the Jonas Brothers band member shared something of a trauma dump when prompted to share a story from his life that he’d never told in the press. Without hesitation, the 33-year-old father of two, pulled a tale from the bowels of his memory.

“There’s a point in your life where, as an adult, you can remember the last time you shit your pants,” he said. Then he revealed that “about four years ago,” he suffered a bit of a wardrobe malfunction while on stage, something he’s dealt with thanks to “a lot of therapy.”

“Let’s just say it was a bad day to choose to wear white clothing,” he said of the incident. “You think it might be a little toot, it might have been a little something else, a little something extra. So it was like a mid-wardrobe shit change during the set.”

He clarified that “it wasn’t as big a deal as I thought,” though at the time he worried that fans would notice what sounded like an unplanned trumpet solo.

“Such is life,” he said, revealing that he feels a kinship with others who have suffered the same fate. “It’s happened to many artists. I feel like I’ve paid my dues and I’m part of some secret club now.”

  • Kevin Jonas’s Wife Danielle Is Still Kind of Looking for Her Thing

Kevin Jonas’s Wife Danielle Is Still Kind of Looking for Her Thing

    [ad_1]

One is the loneliest number, as we all know, but Danielle Jonas has some strong feelings about three, it seems. During a recent podcast interview, Danielle, wife of eldest Jonas Brother Kevin, revealed that she sometimes feels like the odd one out when compared to her sisters-in-law.

In an episode of the LadyGang podcast released June 27, Danielle and Kevin gave a frank interview in which Danielle revealed that she can feel like the last crayon in the box in comparison to Nick Jonas’s wife Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Joe Jonas’s wife Sophie Turner. Chopra-Jonas and Turner are both big-name actors, while Danielle’s top IMDb credit is for the reality show Married to Jonas. She’s quite literally most famous for being married to a Jonas Brother. And, yeah, she feels weird about it!

“I’m also finding like my place in it,” she said, “because the two boys [Nick and Joe] married somebody who, they’re actresses, they’re out there, everyone knows them, and I feel like I’m Danielle, you know? It’s hard.”

She has an ally in Kevin, who also feels the sting of comparison.

“I feel that way, too,” he said. “Like you said, Nick and Joe, right, like solo careers, movies, all the stuff. It’s like, everyone has to find their place, no matter the situation.”

He said that the key for both himself and Danielle is “communicating, talking through it.”

“We always get compared to the people around you most,” Kevin said, pointing out that the podcast had started with a discussion amongst the hosts over which brother they favored. (Kevin got points for “fingering the guitar,” it’s worth noting.)

While Danielle has her hands full with her jewelry company, not to mention her marriage and their two children, she admitted to struggling with her public image.

“I’m out there celebrity-wise because I married you,” she said. “And that’s where like, it’s like, I want to have something else to my name, too, so that it feels—I don’t know—more than, or like the other girls, because then when I’m with the other girls, I feel just less-than sometimes. It’s weird.”

One claim to fame that is entirely hers? Kevin’s glow-up.

“She worked on me every single minute of every single day,” Kevin said of his wife, pointing out that she “pushes me to work out,” and that she was a strong voice in getting him to stop straightening his hair and embrace his natural curls.

And, perhaps most importantly? “No more scarves,” she said.

  • What’s With Our Need For Nostalgia?

What’s With Our Need For Nostalgia?

    [ad_1]

I grew up during Disney Channel’s golden era — you know exactly what I’m talking about. It was the when Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOMs) were at their prime and peak Disney TV starring the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, the Sprouse twins, and more. In hindsight, it was wild. There has never been such a hotbed for stardom since Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera were all on the Mickey Mouse Club.

And, yes, as I continue growing up I miss having these lighthearted shows and movies to watch. Every so often, my roommates and I will binge Disney movies like
High School Musical or classics like The Princess Diaries. But lately, there’s been a shift.

Has anyone noticed that we as a society are lacking a little…creativity? I mean, sure, it’s completely normal to crave a little dose of your childhood here and there — who isn’t comforted by memories of your life before you had an overwhelming sense of anxiety. But I almost feel as though we’ve gotten
too comfortable with bringing back the old.

Some of the nostalgia-inducing events are
exciting. Think: the fervor for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour or The Jonas Brothers’ The Tour, where they play all of their old songs spanning their entire career. It’s exciting and it’s a good way to get fans of old and new in the room.

We’re also in an era of reboots galore. Take a short glance at any of your streaming platforms and you’ll see a lot of familiar titles. Former early 2000s favorites like
Zoey 101, iCarly, and That’s So Raven are finding themselves back on our television screens. And if you think that’s all…oh, boy.

Some reboots are reimaginations of the show…like
Gossip Girl with a new cast and fresh, young faces. While others are continuations of the show just in the future – think iCarly and Zoey 101 (the reboot being Zoey 102).

    And then, there’s Disney.

Disney is constantly trying to get the older generations into theaters, not only with Marvel, but with live action remakes of our favorite films. Over the past decade, we’ve seen versions of
Aladdin, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and most recently, The Little Mermaid. And while I surely will watch out of curiosity and lack of alternatives, I’m always left feeling a little underwhelmed.

    Nostalgia-core is literally
everywhere. It’s in the way we dress, with Y2K trends consistently leading the pack. People are preferring jelly shoes and mini skirts over any other decades-inspired trend. But when do we border the line between nostalgia and overdoing something?

Maybe it’s because we went through a global pandemic for so many years, we are craving stability and childhood…going back to our roots and finding comfort in what we know after a lot of uncertainty.
Watching reboots of your fave show or movie can feel like the adult version of a pacifier.

Or maybe it’s because we have completely lost identity in today’s society…where we can’t thrive on anything but the past. Unoriginal ideas cycling back into the trendscape just because we can’t think of anything new.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. If something is getting those viewers in and bringing in the money, why wouldn’t they keep rebooting shows? Why wouldn’t Disney just make live action versions of their entire filmography? That way, they can release one original and make it really amazing in the interim.

One thing I know for sure is that trends recycle all the time. There was a time not so long ago where anything low-rise was considered a fashion crime and you wouldn’t dare wear Crocs out of your house unironically. But in the early 2000s, and subsequently in 2023, you would be considered right on trend.

And while the Disney films will always be successful in some capacity, I don’t know if every show needs a reboot. Some shows ended where they ended, and that’s how it should stay. Honestly, I feel like I’m getting bored too easily, I already know the plotline of everything coming out!

    With popular shows like
Succession and Ted Lasso in their final episodes forever, we are met with the realization that we will soon run out of original content if we keep rebooting everything. And yes, I get that a reboot is still somehow original if it’s a continuation of the series…you know that’s not my point here.

So, I’m left with the question: when is it time to let the past be….the past?

  • Haley Lu Richardson Gushes Over Dream Gig Covering The Jonas Brothers

Haley Lu Richardson Gushes Over Dream Gig Covering The Jonas Brothers

    [ad_1]

Haley Lu Richardson went to the “year 3000” and back as she gushed over the Jonas Brothers while serving as the Jo Bros’ correspondent during their “Today” show concert on Friday.

“The White Lotus” star, who appeared in the band’s music video for their song “Wings” earlier this year, covered the Jonas Brothers’ performance on the release date of their new project “The Album.”

“I love you Kevin, I love you Nick, I love you Joe,” said Richardson as the band walked by her prior to their show.

She added: “They love me, too, they said it. Did you hear?”

Richardson, prior to the show, said her job entailed being “functional,” not crying and not peeing her pants.

“Wish me luck,” she said on Thursday.

Richardson, in an interview with People, opened up about being a massive fan of the group. She referred to meeting the Jonas Brothers at age 12 as a “dream come true” and joked that she wished she could be a “sister wife” to the brothers, who are all married.

The actor, at one point during her “Today” show gig, acknowledged that she hadn’t quite listened to the Jonas Brothers’ latest effort but showed her appreciation for the singles “Wings” along with “Waffle House,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

She went on to soak in the moment, claiming that Kevin Jonas winked at her through his sunglasses on Friday.

“This is absolutely nuts on a stick because they’re right there. They’re here and I was standing right there,” Richardson said.

Richardson also smiled ear-to-ear at one point as she praised the band for their “11 out of 10s” performance.

“Wow, you’re really like without words,” noted “Today” anchor Dylan Dreyer.

“Oh yeah. Did I say words? Yes,” replied Richardson before joining Dreyer to surprise a “superfan” with tickets to the Jonas Brothers tour.

  • An Animated Debate: Which Feature Will Bring Home the Oscar?

An Animated Debate: Which Feature Will Bring Home the Oscar?

    [ad_1]

This was such a good year for animation. Last year it truly boiled down to “Encanto vs. Mitchells”, but the field is wide open, so let’s run it down with the help of Vareity!

With Disney/Pixar, we have Turning Red, a critical darling. Not commercial, because Disney didn’t give it a wide release….and Lightyear and Strange World, both of which did receive wide releases, flopped, and are non-entities in this race. Turning Red, which marks the first from Pixar to be solely directed by a woman, has received critical acclaim for Shi’s depictions of female friendships and the mother-daughter relationship.

OP Note: TR is still probably my favorite film of the year.

Netflix has quite a lot, including The Sea Beast, their most successful animated film to date. There’s also My Father’s Dragon, the latest from Cartoon Saloon, which hit the platform with a mild splash. Of course, there’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which is almost guaranteed to place in the nominations.

The article does not, however, mention Henry Selick’s Wendell and Wild.

OP Note: Sea Beast was fine enough, and GDT’s Pinocchio was really cool. Nice to see a multitude of stop motion available, sad W&W isn’t getting more attention.

GKIDS missed a nomination last year with Belle (tip: the soundtrack is amazing), but with Inu-Oh already being nominated for a Golden Globe, maybe they can take it all the way (and give us a US release, y/y?).

Did you, like most people, forget Dreamworks Animation had not one, but two films this year? The Bad Guys had a fairly slow rollout worldwide with it’s soft, almost Spider-verse-esque style for a bunch of criminals. It sadly seems to have sunk out of the public conciousness. Meanwhile, the sixth entry into the Shrek franchise, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, may be 11 years too late, but it was worth the wait, with very positive reviews, and a bombastic artstyle and story that stops just short of saying memento mori.

OP Note: Ok, maybe Puss in Boots is my favorite this year?

Welcome to the animation side, A24, and welcome Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. I didn’t like it. But I’m glad another stop motion/live action hybrid is making the rounds, and is winning a lot of smaller circuits!
