    After a record-equalling seven world titles, Ronnie O’Sullivan will be making his debut on the senior world stage in May at the 2026 World Seniors Snooker Championship.

    However, the 50-year-old is still expected to play in the main World Championship, which finishes just two days before the seniors starts, with both events taking place at the Crucible.

    He joins an impressive seniors line-up that includes 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham, 12-time women’s world champion Reanne Evans and former Masters and UK champion Matthew Stevens.

    Chairman Jason Francis branded O’Sullivan the “most commercially valuable player the sport has ever seen” and that he expects The Rocket’s participation to drive ticket sales even higher.

    The seniors tournament will take place May 6-10, being prefaced by World Championship from April 18-May 4.

    O’Sullivan relocated to Dubai last year but will spend April and May in Sheffield as he also attempts to win an eighth world title when he appears in his 34th consecutive World Snooker Championship.

    Changes to the seniors tournaments rules have meant players ranked in the world top 64 are eligible to take part with several having taken the opportunity.

    With four title wins, the most successful player in the seniors is Jimmy White, with the 10-time ranking event winner also slated to take part.

    This comes 25 years after O’Sullivan won his first World Snooker Championship which he won in his 10th year of being a professional at the age of 25, as he seeks to add yet another record to his CV.

    Seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan has withdrawn from the BetVictor Northern Ireland Open due to medical reasons, the World Snooker Tour (WST) has announced.

    O’Sullivan was due to face Long Zehuang in the last 64 in Belfast on Monday afternoon, but announcement from WST on their website confirmed he had pulled out of the event.

    China’s Long receives a bye to the last 32, with the tournament at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast running until October 27th.

    Trump makes winning start in Belfast

    World No 1 Judd Trump began his title defence with a 4-0 win over Ishpreet Singh Chadha needing just 49 minutes to whitewash his opponent with the aid of breaks of 72, 65 and 112.

    “It was easy to get up for this event,” said Trump, who has won the event four times in the last six years. “Certain venues seem to be made for snooker. Anyone who has played in the semis or final at the Waterfront [Hall] knows how special it is.

    “It’s similar to Alexandra Palace or the Tempodrom in terms of the size of the crowd and the way people react. I thrive on that atmosphere with people enjoying themselves. It helps me show off and play my best shots.”

    Trump will face Matthew Selt in the last 32 after Selt defeated Lyu Haotian 4-1, while World Championship runner-up Jak Jones beat Alexander Ursenbacher 4-0 and Zhou Yuelong recovered from 3-1 down to oust Dominic Dale 4-3.

    Northern Ireland’s Jordan Brown suffered a 4-2 defeat to Robert Milkins, while 18-year-old Stan Moody made breaks of 108 and 105 before beating Ryan Day in a decider.

    Louis Heathcote also came through in a decider in a scrappy contest against former world champion Mark Selby, whose 81 in the first frame was the only break over 50 by either player.

    Stuart Bingham beat Scott Donaldson 4-1 in a similarly low-scoring contest, while China’s Pang Jungxu made a break of 98 in the decider as he beat compatriot Yuan Sijun 4-3.

    John Higgins became only the second snooker player to reach 1,000 career centuries despite crashing out of the English Open in Brentwood.

    The 49-year-old Scot achieved the milestone with breaks of 108 and 105 in the third and fifth frames of his quarter-final clash against Mark Allen.

    But it was not enough to seal a win that would have boosted his hopes of staying in the top 16 as Allen – who hit a century of his own in the opening frame – held firm in a gruelling decider to edge a 4-3 win.

    Ronnie O’Sullivan is the only other player to have reached the four-figure century milestone, having done so in the final frame of his 2019 Players Championship final win over Neil Robertson.

    Earlier, Judd Trump set up a quarter-final clash with China’s Wu Yize after hitting back from behind to claim a 4-2 win over Fan Zhengyi.

    The world No 1 nudged one closer to joining O’Sullivan and Higgins in the thousand-century club as he reeled off a break of 101 in the course of winning three frames in a row to extend his winning run.

    Mark Selby held his nerve to carve out a 4-3 win over Si Jiahui and book a last-eight meeting with India’s Ishpreet Singh Chadha, who also overcame a final frame decider against China’s He Guoqiang.

    Stocks just keep climbing in 2024, but the bears haven’t been silenced and some are warning that the market is in a bubble on the verge of bursting.

    Fears of a painful sell-off have been rising in recent weeks, particularly as stocks continue to break through to record highs. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq hit four straight all-time closing highs this week, with tech titans like Apple and Nvidia continuing to soar past a $3 trillion market cap.

    But the bears on Wall Street warn that the enthusiasm for artificial intelligence mirrors the internet bubble of the late 90s — and the recent run-up in stock prices is a bad omen for investors.

    Here’s what five forecasters have to say about the latest rally — and why they think the stock market is headed for a fall.

    Harry Dent

    Stocks are in the midst of the “bubble of all bubbles,” and equities could lose more than half of their value as inflated asset prices finally burst, according to the economist Harry Dent.

    When the bubble finally pops, the S&P 500 could drop as much as 86%, while the Nasdaq Composite could drop by around 92%, Dent predicted in a recent interview with Fox Business Network.

    That bubble, which has formed over years of loose monetary and fiscal policy, is already showing signs of “topping,” Dent added. Stocks are “barely” making new highs, and equities have likely been inflated for the past 14 years, he estimated — far longer than most historical bubbles, which typically last for five to six years.

    “It’s been stretched higher for longer, so you have to expect a bigger crash than we got in 2008 and 2009,” he warned.

    Dent has been making the case for a major market crash for years. In 2009, he wrote a book predicting a stock market crash and ensuing economic depression, which he said could last for 10 years or more.

    Capital Economics

    Stocks have another 20% to inflate before the bubble bursts, according to Capital Economics.

    The research firm is predicting the S&P 500 could see a steep correction following a rally to 6,500. That’s because there’s only so much more the market can gain before prices pull back, according to John Higgins, the firm’s chief market economist.

    Stocks already look like they’re in a late-stage bubble, Higgins said, pointing to excessive hype surrounding artificial intelligence on Wall Street.

    “Bubbles tend to inflate the most in their final stages as the excitement sort of reaches fever-pitch,” Higgins warned.

    John Hussman

    Elite investor John Hussman thinks stocks could plunge as much as 70% once the bubble bursts.

    Hussman has been warning of a steep correction in stocks all year, and said in a recent note to clients that a handful of red flags are signaling pain ahead.

    According to his firm’s most reliable valuation metric, the S&P 500 looks to be at its most overvalued since 1929, right before the stock market plunged and the US economy spiraled into an economic depression.

    “I continue to view the market advance of recent months as an attempt to ‘grasp the suds of yesterday’s bubble’ rather than a new, durable bull market advance,” Hussman said in a recent note. “I also believe that the S&P 500 could lose something on the order of 50-70% over the completion of this cycle, simply to bring long-term expected returns to run-of-the-mill norms that investors associate with stocks.”

    “Put simply, my impression is that the period since early 2022 comprises the extended peak of one of the three great speculative bubbles in US history,” he later added.

    Richard Bernstein Advisors

    According to RBA’s chief investment officer, Richard Bernstein, large-cap stocks are way overvalued and look positioned for a wipeout.

    In a recent note, Bernstein noted that only a narrow group of stocks are propping up the market and that today’s mega-cap leaders are going to give back most of their gains and see dismal returns going forward.

    At its worst, he predicted the most highly valued stocks could drop 50%, generating losses that rival the dot-com crash.

    “That’s what I think we’re looking at,” Bernstein warned. “It’s multiple years of significant underperformance.”

    Yet, that could end up being an excellent opportunity for investors who are diversified in other areas of the market, Bernstein said. He noted that his firm is bullish in practically every other area of the market except for the top seven mega-cap stocks.

    UBS

    The stock market is already flashing signs that it’s in a bubble, according to UBS.

    Typically, there are eight warning signs of a market bubble forming, and six of them have already flashed, the bank said. Strategists pointed to signs like growing corporate profits pressure, falling market breadth, and aggressive stock buying among retail investors.

    The good news is that the bubble may not immediately burst. Stocks are looking most similar to the bubble that occurred in 1997, rather than 1999, the analysts said.

    “We only invest for the bubble thesis if we are in 1997 not 1999 (which we think we are),” strategists said in a recent note.

    The stock market is in a bubble, but that doesn’t mean investors should sell their stocks right now, according to a Monday note from Capital Economics chief markets economist John Higgins.

    In fact, based on current valuations there is considerable upside for the stock market between now and the end of 2025, according to Higgins.

    “We are sticking to our view that this [stock market bubble] will inflate through the end of next year. Our end-2025 forecast of 6,500 for the index is premised on its valuation reaching a similar level to its peak during the dot com mania,” Higgins said.

    Based on current levels, the stock market would have to surge about 30% to reach Higgins’s 2025 year-end price target. Higgins also has a 2024 year-end price target of 5,500, representing a potential upside of 10% from today’s levels and the most bullish forecast on Wall Street.

    Both today’s stock market bubble and the dot-com internet bubble of 2000 revolved around the potential economic benefits of a transformative technology. Decades ago it was the advent of the internet, and today it’s generative artificial intelligence.

    The S&P 500’s forward price-to-earnings ratio stands at about 20x right now, which is below the 25x peak it reached during the dot-com bubble. That suggests there’s still plenty of upside to be had as long as the narrative around artificial intelligence continues to build.

    But valuations have historically proven to be a terrible timing tool for investors, and there’s no telling where valuations might peak this time around, as bubbles in the stock market don’t always follow the same exact roadmap.

    “It [is] impossible to know how quickly a bubble will inflate; how big it will get before it bursts; what will cause it to burst; and when it will burst. Nonetheless, our end-2025 and end-2026 forecasts for the S&P 500 are rooted in the idea that a bubble in the index will continue to inflate in the meantime against the backdrop of a modest rise in forward twelve month EPS,” Higgins concluded.

    You Really Don’t Want to Be Thirsty in a Heat Wave

    The heat—miserable and oppressive—is not abating. Today, a third of Americans are under a heat alert as temperatures keep breaking records: Phoenix has hit 110 degrees Fahrenheit for two weeks straight, while this weekend Death Valley in California could surpass the all-time high of 130 degrees.

    Even less extreme heat than that can be dangerous. Recently, in Texas, Louisiana, part of Arizona, and Florida, there have been reports of deaths from heat, and many more hospitalizations. The toll of a heat wave is not always clear in the moment: A new report suggests that last summer’s historic heat wave in Europe killed more than 60,000 people.

    Ideally, you’d stay in the air-conditioned indoors as much as possible. That’s not an option for everyone. The other thing to do is stay hydrated. The importance of getting enough fluid is hard to overstate—and often underappreciated: Last month, the Texas state legislature banned local governments from mandating water breaks for construction workers. In the heat, hydration “impacts everything,” Stavros Kavouras, the director of the Hydration Science Lab at Arizona State University, in Phoenix, told me. And with temperatures continuing to rise, it’s essential to get it right.

    Serious dehydration is really, really bad for you. Your blood volume decreases, which makes your heart work less effectively. “Your ability to thermoregulate declines,” Kavouras told me, “so your body temperature is getting higher and higher.” You might feel weak or dizzy. Your heart rate rises; it gets harder to focus. The worst-case scenario is heatstroke, when your body stops being able to cool itself—a  potentially fatal medical emergency.

    In extreme temperatures, heat injuries can happen quicker than you might think. Given that the human body is mostly water, you might assume that there is some to spare, but inconveniently, this is not the case. “If you lose even 10 percent of [the water] your body has, you are entering the zone of serious clinical dehydration,” Kavouras said. “And if you look at optimal health, even losing just 1 percent of your body weight impacts your ability to function.” There are two basic ways your body cools itself when it gets hot. One is to send more blood to the skin, which releases heat from the core of your body, and is the reason you turn red when you’re overheated. The other is to sweat. It evaporates off your body, and in the process, your body loses excess heat. You can’t cool yourself as effectively if you’re not properly hydrated. At the same time, one of your main cooling mechanisms is actively dehydrating, which means the goal is not just to be hydrated, but to stay that way.

    What that takes depends on many factors rather than a single universal rule, but in general, the danger zone is “high humidity with anything above 90 degrees,” Kavouras said, at which point, “it’s actually dangerous” just to be outside. The more active you are in the heat, and the hotter and more humid it is, the greater the risk—and the more important proper hydration becomes. The standard water target in the U.S. during non-heat-wave times is 3.7 liters a day for men and 2.7 liters for women. When it’s very, very hot out, you need more. Even if you spend most of the day in the bliss of AC, you are almost certainly leaving the house at some point.

    Instead of trying to figure out what that precise amount should be, Kavouras recommends you focus on two things instead. “No. 1, keep water close to you. If you have water close to you, or whatever healthy beverage, you’ll end up drinking more, just because it’s closer,” he said. And second: Keep an eye on how often you pee—pale urine, six to seven times a day, or every two to three hours, is good. You want it to be “basically like a Chablis, a Riesling, Pinot Grigio, or champagne-colored,” John Higgins, a sports cardiologist at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, in Houston, told me. “If you notice the urine is getting darker, like a Chardonnay- or Sauvignon Blanc–type of thing, that generally means you are dehydrated.”

    Certain groups are especially at risk. Older adults are more prone to dehydration, as are young children, people who are pregnant, and people taking certain medications—blood-pressure medications, for example. None of this requires you to take in extra fluids per se, just that you need to be even more careful that you’re getting enough.

    As for what to drink, as a go-to beverage, straight water is hard to beat. Water with fruit slices floating in it has the benefit of feeling like something from a luxury hotel. Carbonated water is also good—you might not be able to drink quite as much of it, which is a potential drawback, but “there is no mechanism in your GI system that will make sparkling water less effective at hydrating you,” Kavouras said. You probably want to avoid downing giant buckets of coffee—caffeine is a diuretic in large quantities and Higgins warns against sugary drinks for the same reason. (A daily iced coffee is fine.) If you’re doing hours of heavy sweating, then you might work in some (less sugary) sports drinks. But for the majority of people, water remains the ideal. Food can also be a fluid source: “Make sure you’re eating a diet that’s rich in vegetables and fruits that have water content,” William Adams, the director of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s Hydration, Environment and Thermal (H.E.A.T) Stress Lab, advised. Alcohol, which causes you to lose fluid, is definitively unhelpful.

    There are lots of water myths out there. Can you go too hard? Technically, it’s possible to over-hydrate, causing an electrolyte imbalance, but all three experts agreed that for most people, this isn’t really a concern. You can find arguments for drinking hot drinks in the summer—the idea being that they increase the amount you sweat, thereby promoting cooling. But Kavouras is emphatic that you’re better off with cold drinks, which cool your body, he said. In the moments before a race, marathon runners will sometimes take it one step further, slurping ice slurries to lower their body temperature. For good old-fashioned drinking water, about 50 degrees Fahrenheit is best—roughly the temperature of cool water from the tap.

    One final key to staying hydrated: Start early. A lot of people, Higgins said, are lightly dehydrated all the time, heat wave or not. “So particularly when you first wake up in the morning, typically you are in a dehydrated state.” Accordingly, he recommends that people drink about a standard water bottle’s worth—roughly 17 ounces—as soon as they wake up. The other thing people forget about, he said, is what happens when they come back inside after enduring the outdoors. “You keep sweating,” he pointed out. In other words: hydrate, and then keep hydrating.

    As crucial as hydration is, it is not a miracle. “It doesn’t mean that you can say, ‘I hydrate well, so I’ll go out for a run in the 120-degree weather, and I’ll be fine because I’m drinking a lot,’” Kavouras said. “It doesn’t work this way.” Still, it is a simple but effective tool. As heat waves like this one become even more frequent, many more people will need to learn how to become attuned to their hydration. And perhaps adequate water can be a perverse sort of comfort: You can’t control the unrelenting heat, but you likely can control your water intake. In a heat wave, it helps to have a glass-half-full attitude—and an emptied glass of water.
