    Are you nearing retirement age?

    Career resources platform Resume Genius released a new report this week, the 10 Best Jobs for Older People in 2025, which reveals the 10 best-paying jobs for adults aged 55 and older, based on high salaries, low physical labor demands, and high job growth.

    The company used data from the BLS’s Labor Force Statistics Current Population Survey, O*NET Online, and the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook to create the report using several parameters, including removing jobs with salaries lower than $49,500 and roles that require education higher than a Bachelor’s degree. The occupations listed also had to have at least 100,000 employees who were 55 or older.

    In the top spot was sales managers, who lead sales teams and work to improve customer reach, according to the report. The job requires low physical activity and pays a median hourly wage of $66.38. Other professions in the top five were accountants and auditors. These jobs ask professionals to analyze budgets and file taxes, and are well-suited for older adults because they offer flexible work schedules, such as seasonal tax work and consulting.

    “Experience is highly valued across industries, and many employers are seeking older candidates to step into leadership or managerial roles,” Resume Genius Career Expert Nathan Soto shared in a press release. “Don’t be afraid to venture into fields beyond your previous career; your skills may be more transferable than you realize.”

    The number of college students in the U.S. majoring in computer science hit 600,000 last year — a 40% increase from five years ago. Meanwhile, it’s simultaneously getting harder for these graduates to find work as they compete with career changers and fluctuating demand.

    A new study from software company Finoit aimed to understand the job market by finding the most in-demand skills across tens of thousands of job postings in the U.S. The findings can help job seekers discover which technical points to highlight on their resumes and give career switchers an idea of which skills to learn first.

    The researchers started with a list of tech skills, pinpointed exactly how many listings required them, and then matched the skills to average salaries from Indeed. They found that traditional programming languages like Java and C++ came up often, while emerging areas like quantum computing and blockchain didn’t make the list.

    Still, that doesn’t mean job seekers should neglect to study emerging fields.

    “The tech landscape is constantly evolving,” Finoit co-founder and CTO Mukesh Choudhary said, in a statement. “While developing expertise in high-demand areas like Python and SQL is crucial, it’s equally important to keep an eye on emerging trends and be ready to upskill accordingly.”

    Python and SQL, both used for data science, came up the most — with each named in about 24,000 job listings.

    Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure, with average salaries above $140,000, are also on the top 10 list, indicating that cloud computing skills are in demand. Robotics, a vaguely worded skill, ranked fourth.

    “Robotics’ high ranking is particularly intriguing,” Choudhary stated. “While it’s clear that companies are investing heavily in this area, the broad nature of ‘robotics’ as a skill set may lead to some confusion. Hiring managers and job seekers alike need to be more specific about the exact robotics skills required for each role.”

    Employers Are Lowering Salary Ranges on Job Posts—Here’s Why | Entrepreneur

    Eight states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, and Washington) and six U.S. cities (Cincinnati, Ithaca, Westchester, Jersey City, New York City, and Toledo) currently have pay transparency laws — from requiring pay ranges in job posts to being obligated to disclose salary upon an applicant’s request.

    However, the push for pay transparency isn’t exactly motivating employers to advertise increased salaries, and a new report by job site ZipRecruiter found that almost 50% of employers have actually decreased pay over the past year.

    The salary drop comes after pay and signing bonuses skyrocketed during an acute period of labor shortages amid the pandemic, with wages increasing by 4.5% year-over-year in 2021 — the fastest uptick since 1983.

    The new report signals that pandemic-induced wage growth is slowing down, and, in some cases, companies have started posting lower pay ranges for open roles and are readjusting their offerings.

    “Employers are trying to reset candidate expectations,” said Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, per CNBC.

    In a survey of over 2,000 employers, 48% admitted reducing pay ranges for some positions within the past year. Of small and medium-sized companies, 50% cut pay compared to 38% of large corporations.

    Meanwhile, 41% reported a role going unfilled over the past six months because candidates wanted more compensation than the company could provide.

    However, despite regulations promoting transparency, 30% to 40% of employers are not even complying with the new pay transparency laws, according to data from workplace data firm, Revelio Labs, per CNBC.

    Furthermore, the ZipRecruiter report found that while 72% of employers surveyed do disclose pay, 10% don’t, and the remaining 18% only do so in the territories where they are legally required to do so.

    Forty-four percent of employers surveyed reported that they “worry” revealing pay rates could disincline top talent from applying because competitors may post higher wages, the ZipRecruiter report found. Of the 10% of employers that do not disclose pay, 71% said they only discuss pay in interviews, where they have the opportunity to “provide more context.”

    Want a Higher Salary? Job Hopping Boosts Pay, Per New Report | Entrepreneur

    Job hopping, the practice of moving from one job to another, voluntarily, has gained traction over the years — during the “Great Resignation” in 2021 and 2022, quit rates reached highs that hadn’t been seen since the 1970s, Pew Research Center found.

    Now, a new report by ResumeBuilder has found that job hopping can actually yield substantial increases in pay.

    In a survey of 1,000 full-time U.S. workers between the ages of 18 and 40, the report found that 80% of job hoppers have increased their salary over the past five years, with 20% seeing increases of $50,000 or more.

    Fifty-one percent of survey participants reported voluntarily leaving at least one job within a span of fewer than two years over the past five years, with the primary motivation cited as the pursuit of a higher salary (62%), followed by improved working conditions (51%), greater growth opportunities (51%), and enhanced benefits (49%).

    Interestingly, Gen Z was significantly more likely to engage in job hopping over the last four years, with 73% acknowledging such career moves, compared to 44% of millennials.

    ResumeBuilder also found that 49% of respondents don’t believe that there is a set amount of time one needs to stay in a job. Of the 51% who do think there is a “certain amount of time,” 65% stated that they think it is one year or less.

    While there is a case for staying with a job for lengthy periods of time (promotions, career development, etc.), some experts say there are situations where one should leave, regardless of how short one’s tenure.

    “I encourage my clients to stay at a company for at least 2 years, but in situations where there is toxicity, unmet/unclear expectations, or it’s not a good fit, I would encourage someone to take the steps to leave,” said career strategist at ResumeBuilder, Julia Toothacre, in the report. “Loyalty isn’t worth your mental and emotional health.”

    The practice of job hopping can have significant other benefits, too, per Indeed, such as gaining skills in adaptability and the opportunity to relocate to new cities. However, it also cites disadvantages, such as inconsistent experience, increased stress due to uncertainty, and loss of benefits.

    Also, switching jobs too soon or impulsively may lead to buyer’s remorse.

    “So many people get ‘Shiny Object Syndrome,’ where they just see a job title or salary range and they just pounce,” career coach Sarah Doody told CNBC. “It isn’t until the third round of interviews or unfortunately for some people, after they’ve accepted the job and they’re there for two months that they realize, ‘I didn’t think about this.’”

    In short, job hopping isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all scenario, so if you’re thinking of hopping on the trend, reevaluate where you are, want to go, and how staying or leaving will impact your career trajectory and mental health.

    In this breakneck-paced world, one in which multiple income sources are increasingly embraced, side ventures unrelated to one’s primary line of work have been the prevailing models. However, this trend has also led to a long line of entrepreneurial scams, as people try their hand at side hustles for which “no experience is required.”

    A recent and detailed-below personal experience, I hope, can be fuel for a new paradigm, one that has the potential to redefine the way both entrepreneurs and those seeking employment approach their professional journeys, and particularly how they start new businesses.

    NanoGlobals began as a humble endeavor in 2020. Locked inside, and with an abundance of time on my hands, like many, I chose to pursue a side business. While I was enormously grateful to have maintained my primary source of income, a moment like 2020 offered a chance to reflect, including on facing the crises of tomorrow with stability and confidence. It’s possible to seamlessly merge the two, creating a harmonious symphony of skills that at once captivates employers and distinguishes applicants from their peers — demonstrating versatility, adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit.

    This approach can be a particularly powerful asset for individuals striving to excel in the ever-evolving digital landscape, in which simply having functional expertise is increasingly not enough. With AI disrupting several white-collar professions, the key to success is navigating and thriving in the worlds of both building and selling. If you produce a successful side hustle, it proves to future employers that you can do both.

    As the business world continues to move on from Covid-19, a range of trends and assumptions widespread during the height of the pandemic are being reassessed. Among them is the notion that “job-hopping” by younger workers is natural or even laudable.

    Of course, job-hopping, especially by younger workers, isn’t new. Gallup called millennials the “job-hopping generation” back in 2016, and data suggest that job-hopping overall has been in decline since 2001. But the ultra-tight labor market of the past few years and other factors have put the phenomenon in the headlines again, especially with quiet quitting and demands from workers for remote work options.

    That has made it top-of-mind for those responsible for staffing up businesses large and small. And those involved in filling roles tend to be much less forgiving of the habit than younger job hunters might think or hope.

    Whenever the issue of job-hopping comes up, it is important to first acknowledge that employees are often not responsible for a CV that reflects a lot of movement. There are layoffs and bosses or colleagues who turn out to be overbearing or sexist — and even whole workplaces that are toxic. And there are a lot of other things that happen in life that are outside of one’s control and which can force someone to change jobs with a greater frequency than planned.

    No one should ever be shamed for leaving a job that is unhealthy or for a job that disappears for reasons having nothing to do with one’s performance. And of course, people sometimes leave jobs for personal reasons that are even more important and rewarding than work, like starting or growing a family or caring for a loved one.

    The downsides of job-hopping

    By contrast, job-hopping is more about short-term gain and short-sighted behavior. It’s people leaving not because they are being mistreated or hitting a glass ceiling, but for a few thousand more in annual salary or a commute that’s a few minutes less. It’s sometimes about people becoming bored with the job they currently have. And when people start switching jobs because of the lure of a “shiny new object” or just because they feel like leaving, it can quickly become a pattern.

    One of the most corrosive aspects of job-hopping is that the damage it causes to careers usually isn’t obvious to the workers themselves. Candidates who are otherwise well-qualified for a position will be moved to the bottom of the pile by hiring managers who have been burnt in the past and don’t want to take a chance of it happening again. And in some cases, they won’t even get into the pile, screened out by software designed to pinpoint CVs with excess movement between jobs. But as a job-seeker, you won’t even be aware of opportunities you may be missing, because people just don’t contact you — all you get is silence.

    There is no official line beyond which the normal cycling of positions turns into job-hopping, and for the youngest of workers, it’s hard even for seasoned HR professionals to get a read. Two jobs in someone’s first two years out of college might not mean anything. But if someone has been in a career for several years, the signs can be all too obvious. Five jobs in eight years? You could have trouble getting the sixth. Fifteen jobs in 20 years? You may be unemployable.

    For younger workers, a good rule of thumb is that anything less than a two-year commitment to a particular job can be troubling. And more than two or three jobs cut short is likely to have a meaningful negative impact on your prospects.

    One interesting aspect of the current narrative around job-hopping is the notion that employers have no loyalty to their workers and that this lack of loyalty is something employees, especially younger workers, should repay. But job-hopping most conspicuously demonstrates a lack of regard for colleagues. This might not matter greatly if one is content to be a contractor or to be treated as one. But it doesn’t work if someone is hoping to be valued as a full member of a team and treated loyally by their employer.

    There are other good reasons to resist the lure of job-hopping. Many positions become more rewarding over time, especially as they become more challenging. It is natural to assume that advancement in pay and title should come before an increase in responsibilities. But it is even more natural for successful organizations to give promising employees more responsibilities before they are officially promoted. In business life, it is often easy to forget that the best opportunities can be found by looking up, rather than out.
