    The New Year is the perfect time to set some goals. With a fresh start before us all, we should all take a little time to reflect on the past year and see where we can make improvements in the upcoming months. So here are a few tips on sticking to New Year’s resolutions:

    – Write them down. I like to put them on the corkboard in my office or in the kitchen at our command centre. Writing them down helps us to not only remember our resolutions but to keep them on our minds in the coming weeks when resolutions can get pushed to the wayside or forgotten all together. 

    – Make resolutions that are attainable. Don’t try to take on too much all at once. For example, you may like to lose 30 pounds in 2018, but start by setting a goal to lose 10 pounds. Setting too high of a goal may frustrate you right off the bat. 

    – Give yourself time to achieve these goals. You’re not going to transform your lifestyle into a healthy one overnight. Break down your resolutions so that you can achieve them in steps. Want to eat healthier? Add one new superfood to your diet each week. By the end of February, you’ll have added eight new healthful foods to your food plan, and that’s great!

    – Get a buddy system going. You’re not the only one who has vowed to join an exercise class or the gym this year, so find a friend who you can workout with. Having someone to work at these resolutions with will make it all the more fun.

    – Reward yourself! It shouldn’t be all work, work, work… plan a few rewards for yourself throughout the process of attaining your resolutions. If you’ve been working at shedding 10 pounds and you do, you should allow yourself an indulgent dessert from your favourite dessert cafe. Allowing yourself to have a few rewards along the way will make it all the more graitfying to reach your goals.

    MADISON (WKOW) — Wisconsin Repubicans have unveiled a new proposal to establish a medical marijuana program in the state.

    The bill would limit the drug to only those who are severely ill with chronic diseases like cancer. Smokeable marijuana would not be allowed.

    The proposal also regulates medical cannabis growers, processors, and testing laboratories, and requires the state to establish five state-owned dispensaries to grow and sell medical cannabis products.

    Cannabis lawyer Jason Tarasek worked closely with lawmakers in Minnesota to hone the state’s adult-use cannabis bill that legalized recreational marijuana in the state. He said this week that he sees similarities between Wisconsin’s proposal and Minnesota’s initial medical marijuana program that was established in 2014. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has indicated this proposal is based on Minnesota’s program.

    Tarasek said that their initial program was similarly restrictive, but has loosened in recent years to include other conditions such as autism, intractable pain, and sleep apnea. 

    “Like everything with marijuana, it is very controversial when it’s first introduced, the stigma is real around marijuana,” he said. “I think it’s interesting to watch these states come online, and I’m certain that if the medical marijuana program is introduced in Wisconsin, as intended, society will see this…

    One of the major stories that defined the tech sector in 2023 was layoffs. Companies large and small shed over 240,000 jobs in the last year, and while the trend has cooled of late, it hasn’t stopped, with nearly 7,000 jobs cut in November alone.

    But there have been bright spots. Climate tech is one sector that has been hiring, and 2024 looks like it will be continuing the trend.

    Clean energy jobs have grown 10% in the past two years, outpacing the economy as a whole, according to a report by industry group E2. Through 2032, when the Inflation Reduction Act is set to expire, the fastest-growing job fields include wind turbine technician (45% growth) and solar photovoltaic installer (22% growth), according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    For startups, 2023 was more muddled. As investors closed their pocketbooks, founders had to make hard choices about how to extend their runways. Some had to resort to layoffs, but not everyone. Many founders I’ve spoken with continue to emphasize that they’re hiring for a variety of roles.

    For those laid off from the general tech sector, climate tech would appear to be an appealing pivot, and for many, that’s proving to be true. Nearly every company needs software developers, project managers and designers. Is there a need for 240,000 of them? Probably not yet. And some that look like a close fit might require a bit of climate or energy knowledge on the part of the applicant.

    In other words, there’s a skills gap.

    Can a parent of a child with autism do both? The answer is yes. Here are 5 fun ways that a parent can celebrate Halloween with their child who has autism:

    1)    Let them pick the costume: Sometimes as a parent we worry about what is appropriate and inappropriate for our kids. We may worry a certain costume may scare them or make them uncomfortable. We forget that unless they are babies or very young toddlers, they can decide what to wear, scary or not. Let them have the control here.

    2)    Throw a small party in your house if they are afraid to go trick or treating: A smaller gathering of close friends may be easier for some kids to handle than going out trick or treating.

    3)    Have non edibles to give out and give to your child: This is especially good so kids (and their parents), don’t overindulge in the goodies, but also important that those with food allergies don’t feel left out on this day.

    4)    Share the history of the day (minus the scarier details): For kids that like a good story, share the story of Halloween with them. It can be a great bonding moment for you both.

    5)    Get dressed up as well: This is not necessary of course, but sometimes when Mom and Dad get dressed up in the spirit of things (pun intended). J This could make nervous youngsters feel more at ease and excited about this day. You could try a family theme: ie Star Wars characters, Adams family, Minions etc.

    The most important thing any parent can do, is make sure their child feels like they belong and enjoy the activities of childhood. Halloween and trick or treating is just another one of those childhood events that may take kids with autism longer to feel comfortable around, but when they achieve that comfort level, they have as terrific a time as their neuro typical peers.

    Thanksgiving is upon us, and it’s a wonderful time to take stock in everything you have around you on a daily basis. Sure, we all get caught up in the usual mundane, day-to-day chores and tasks, but do you ever really stop to think about how lucky you are? I’ve put a lot of thought into it, so here’s 7 reasons I’m grateful to be a mom.

    7. I know love. True love. When you don’t have kids, people who do always say things like “it’s a love you could never know until you have children have your own.” And you think, blah, blah, sure… look at how cute my kitty is!! But it’s true: there’s simply no love quite like the unconditional love a mother has for her child. Nothing. On. Earth.

    6. I’m loved back. Even when I don’t love myself too much, or I look in the mirror and barely recognize the tired, older, worn-out woman staring back, my children look at me with a love like no other.

    5. I wake up everyday with purpose. I am needed. Every single day, someone is relying on me… a lot. It gives me a reason to climb out of bed. And it’s the reason I can happily drift off to sleep every night – I may be utterly pooped, but it’s because I had purpose today.

    4. I get to share in firsts. There’s nothing like experiencing a child’s first everything, from the foods to the holidays and birthdays, the wonders of the world and the simple pleasures. I’d never realized just how many firsts we experience in our lives until I became a mom. And now, I relish in every wonderful “first.”

    3. I get to pass things on. Wisdom. Life lessons. Funny anecdotes. Things my mother would say to me that I now find myself saying to my own brood. Traditions I was fond of as a child. Old wives tales my aunts and grandmothers used to tell me. It’s all so much fun to pass things on to my kids.

    2. I get to look at myself in a new way. I’m constantly reexamining myself, what I believe in, how I behave, and that’s thanks to my children. They’re watching and mimicking and taking cues from me all day, every day. It’s a wonderful reminder to reassess our thoughts and feelings on a regular basis.

    1. I get to do the best job in the world. Yes, it’s exhausting, and stressful, and at times thankless. True, there’s no pay or vacation time. But it’s the best job I have ever done, like, ever. No one could ever offer me a gig that holds this much happiness.

    With the emergence and widespread use of artificial intelligence over the past year, questions loom over how the technology will impact the job market — but according to a new report, it already has.

    A recent report from the job and networking platform LinkedIn found a significant surge in job postings worldwide that reference AI or generative AI. In fact, between July 2021 and July 2023, such job listings more than doubled globally.

    Moreover, the increase of AI-related roles isn’t industry-specific, but rather spans a myriad of sectors, Olivier Sabella, vice president of talent solutions at LinkedIn, told CNBC.

    “These job posts vary from roles where professionals will directly work on AI development, such as AI engineer, to job postings where AI is listed as a required skill — for example, a digital product manager or cyber security consultant,” Sabella told the outlet.

    The report also found that it’s not just employers warming up to the implementation of AI, but the new tech is also piquing job seekers’ interest.

    Job postings that mention AI or generative AI have seen 17% “greater application growth” over the past two years.

    “As for the popularity of job posts mentioning AI, candidates are savvy,” Erin Scruggs, vice president of global talent acquisition at LinkedIn, said in the report. “They’re showing they want to go where opportunities are.”

    And some companies are willing to shell out big bucks for those who fit the bill.

    A report by ResumeBuilder earlier this year found that of 1,187 business leaders in the U.S., 92% are hiring, and 91% are looking for ChatGPT experience. One in four is willing to offer starting salaries exceeding $200,000, and 17% of respondents said they’d surpass a $300,000 salary for AI “prompt engineers.”

    Salary expectations for U.S. workers have reached a record high, according to the New York Federal Reserve’s annual employment and labor market survey.

    The average “reservation wage” (the minimum an individual would accept for a new job) rose to $78,645 in July 2023, up from $72,873 for the same period last year.

    The uptick in salary expectations was most pronounced in those over 45, who on average had reservation wages of $80,239, while those under 45 had expectations of $77,077.

    However, Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, told Entrepreneur that the report also showed that an increase in reservation wage may signal lingering effects of post-pandemic wage expectations, and salaries not keeping up with the inflation rate.

    “Anytime there’s rapid growth, workers begin to expect that to continue,” Pollak says. “Workers may also be expecting to see the kind of growth they saw during the pandemic persist. The consumer price index has gone up so much, and wages have also risen about the same amount, whereas they should have risen faster by now, so workers are expecting some sort of catch-up in wages.”

    While the job market was in seekers’ favor for the majority of 2022, the tables have turned, and American workers are less certain about their ability to receive offers in the coming months, the new report also found.

    Individuals expecting to receive a job offer in the next four months dropped to 18.7% in July 2023, down from 21.1% in July 2022. Furthermore, expectations of receiving multiple offers fell more significantly, from 25.7% in July of last year to 20.6% in July 2023.

    Still, the decline in confidence is relatively minor, Pollak says, and may simply reflect the job market returning to healthy norms following the post-pandemic hiring frenzy.

    “Numbers have come down from such a high, and from record high hires and record high job openings and everything, that it does mean that some of the people who got a career boost are now struggling and finding it harder to find jobs,” Pollak said. “In a healthier labor market, there will always be winners and losers. There will be more people who are finding it challenging, and that is sort of to be expected.”

    While the number of Americans searching for new jobs decreased by 5.3% in July from a year prior, satisfaction with wage compensation rose by 3%, along with nonwage benefits (1.7%), and promotion opportunities (4%).

    On Friday, a State Supreme Court judge blocked the state’s marijuana retail licensing program after siding with complainants who argued that limiting the first dispensary licenses to people with prior convictions violated state law.

    The injunction is part of a civil suit filed by service-disabled veterans, who argue that allowing “justice-involved individuals” to have the first recreational dispensary licenses is unconstitutional.

    TEWKSBURY — On June 12, the Tewksbury Select Board kicked off the first of three nights of hearings to review adult retail marijuana license applications for several companies vying for one of the town’s three retail marijuana licenses and a host community agreement with the town.

    “The issue here is about the qualifications and the background of each of the applicants,” said chair Todd Johnson.

    Sundaze, owned by Brad Tosto, Peter Wilson, and Stephen Doherty, presented a proposal for 2504 Main St. in the South Village Dis­trict. The applicant highlighted their experience in business operations, financial accounting, and regulatory compliance. The company held community outreach meetings in late 2022.

    The company submitted a business plan to the board, outlining its mission and community en­gagement strategy. The proponents highlighted plans to hire local employees and create an elegant storefront, along with a security and diversion plan that calls for a full-time security director. Tosto noted that the town has been trying to fill va­cant storefronts. A traffic study found no significant impacts for the location.

    Lazy River Products, owned by William Casso­tis, Mark Leal, and Kevin Platt, presented a proposal for 553 Main St. in the Ocean State Job Lot plaza. The company held a community outreach meeting in fall of 2022.

    Montana will soon crack down on synthetic marijuana and intoxicating hemp products that have proliferated through regulatory loopholes despite concerns they pose a health risk to children. 

    The Cannabis Control Division, the marijuana regulatory arm of the Montana Department of Revenue, said Tuesday eradicating synthetic products will be the “biggest lift” for the agency between now and the 2025 Legislature. 

    “Most of these businesses that we will be inspecting will be glass shops, gas stations, vape shops,” division administrator Kristan Barbour told the committee. “We’re just going in and making sure they know that any synthetic cannabinoid or hemp intoxicating product is no longer carried.”

    The substances were identified by the agency in January as the likely culprit in a rash of youth hospitalizations raised by local health officials after the first year of marijuana legalization in Montana.

    As a parent, any parent, this week will be an exciting and challenging week. Kids are almost finished with school and are excited about this, yet it means a big transition from structured days to days with less structure, whether they are home, at summer camp or away in another country or vacation destination. For parents of kids with autism, this week is VERY difficult. Most of the kids are excited, but even with that, there is the loss of structure and a familiar routine. What’s a parent to do to ease the transition? Here are six tips you can use that can help your child.

    6 Tips for a Smooth Transition to summer for Your Child with Autism:

    1)    Talking about the school year winding down or showing pictograms: This is the first thing that I have done as a parent. When my son was nonverbal, I would show pictograms about what would be coming, and read books to him about summer vacation and what happens. As he got older and more verbal, we now have conversations about the end of the school year and what it means. The school will be doing this too of course, so try and find out the words your child’s teachers or aids use and go with that.

    2)    Draw on paper or dry erase board the plan for the last day of school and the first few weeks or more: What has also helped my son, has been drawing out with stick figures what will be happening on his first day of summer vacation and afterwards. Now that he is older he does the drawing. It helps with his anxiety (and mine). What parent doesn’t like to see their child happy?

    3)    Have a sensory diet in place: What helps your child to calm down? What helps center or make them comfortable in their body when the weather is hot, there is too much lighting, or too many people? We make sure my son has his trampoline, his swing, sensory massages or fidget toys, and thera putty to manipulate. This helps him focus, breathe and do better with unpredictability. Consult your OT for further help.

    4)    Count down to holiday with calendar: A friend of mine has been doing this for years, I just started. Put up a wall calendar (or do it on the tablet or computer), and have your child cross out another day to show them visually how far or close summer is.

    5)    Have your child meet with summer staff or people they will be with in advance: Most camps usually allow this, and if it is someone who will be at your home, have them meet your child. Also, give them a crash course on your child to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for both your child and their caregiver.

    6)    Prepare yourself for a few challenging weeks: My son’s father and I now have learned that the first few weeks of summer holiday are challenging. We prepare by strategizing together on ways to decrease our stress and our son’s, get enough sleep, and eat properly. This will give us all the best chance of success.

    The Kern County Sheriff’s Office arrested two people in the Frazier Park area on suspicion of growing marijuana and selling it, according to a news release issued Friday. 

    Deputies stopped Hovhannes Sayadyan, 29, and Garni Boghosian-Molhemi, 28, in the area of Cuddy Valley Road and Tecuya Drive on Wednesday. During this stop, the deputies found several large black trash bags filled with marijuana, the news release said.

    The National Pygmy Goat Association has declared April 23 as National Pygmy Goat Day.

    Members and affiliated clubs are planning events throughout the country to celebrate the day and showcase their pygmy goats.

    The National Pygmy Goat Association is the official registry for Pygmy Goats in the United States and the national organization serving Pygmy Goat owners and enthusiasts. Formed in 1976, it works to promote Pygmy Goats as useful livestock and multi-purpose miniature goats that are just plain fun.

    “As the official registry for pygmy goats, it is our goal to educate the public about the breed,” said Darren Watkins, president of the National Pygmy Goat Association. “What better way to celebrate these wonderful animals than by having a day specifically for them. We couldn’t think of a better time than the anniversary of the birth of the NPGA.”

    Not all little goats are Pygmy Goats. Pygmy Goats are a specific breed derived from the Cameroon’s or West African Dwarf Goat. The first Pygmy Goats were brought to the United States in 1959 for use in petting zoos.

    The Pygmy Goat is hardy, alert and animated, good-natured and gregarious, a docile, responsive pet, a cooperative provider of milk, and an ecologically effective browser.

    A substitute teacher at an Iredell County middle school was charged with having marijuana in the classroom, said Iredell Sheriff Darren Campbell.

    Thobani Viki, 30, of Fifth Street, Statesville, was charged with three misdemeanor counts, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and possession of a malt beverage on school property.






    These items were confiscated after an investigation into marijuana odor at Third Creek Middle School.



    A magistrate set bond at $10,000.

    Viki is on probation for DWI from Alexander County.
