  • Jill Scott Said ‘To Whom It May Concern’ — & Baby, It Concerned US

Black History Month already comes with its own rhythm, soul, and ancestral bassline but this year, Jill Scott decided to slide us a gift that sparked “conversation, verbal elation and stimulation” After more than a decade away from the album game, Ms. Jilly from Philly is back with To Whom This May Concern, a 19-track body of work that dropped Friday, February 13, and yes, it was worth the wait.

The album is a rich blend of soul, R&B, hip hop, and spoken word, basically a sonic gumbo that only Jill Scott could stir without spilling a drop. She also tapped a lineup that bridges generations and vibes, including Tierra Whack, Too $hort, and JID. This album ain’t boxed in. It’s grown, playful, reflective, and knows exactly who it’s talking to.

AS for her fans? Oh, they showed up immediately. Over on Threads, the praise poured in heavy. Journalist @thedanielleyoung wrote, “I love that you can tell when Jill Scott is smiling when she is singing.”

And that’s straight facts. If you’ve been rocking with Jill since Who Is Jill Scott?, you know exactly when she’s smiling mid-lyric. Her expressions don’t just stay on her face; they live in the music. Another listener, @kristen.gray, summed it up perfectly: “Being in your 30s experiencing a Jill Scott album rollout is a gift. It’s sexy, spiritual, so beautiful to witness.” No lies detected.

Scott explained that even the title, To Whom This May Concern came to her like a sigh of relief — a quiet exhale that signaled the album would land exactly where it needed to. It’s for who it’s for. And she hopes listeners walk away fed, sustained, and maybe even healed.

In a sit-down with Billboard, Scott opened up about why it took her more than ten years to release a new project. She made it clear: “it wasn’t a creative block, it was a creative break.” Life had to be lived. From navigating premenopause to raising a teenager, she chose to prioritize being human before being an artist. As she put it, Jill Scott doesn’t live in her house. Nobody calls her that at home. That separation is what allows her to refill herself so she can pour back into the music when the time is right.

“It’s the energy that follows me around the house: in the shower, when I’m cleaning, making a bed. But I needed to take a break from that so that I could live life. I am, you know, a human being. So of course, there’s all kinds of stuff like perimenopause. That’s interesting. I have a teenager now; that’s different than ever before.”

And for the fans who’ve been begging the universe (and NPR) for years? Your prayers have been answered. Jill Scott is officially pulling up to Tiny Desk Concerts, premiering Monday, January 16th. Black History Month blessings, indeed.

To Whom This May Concern is now streaming on all platforms. Press play, light a candle or anything else of your choice, pour some wine, and let Jill do what Jill does best: remind us who we are.

When Karlissa Saffold, Blueface’s mom, caught wind of Jill Scott weighing in on the ongoing drama between her son and Chrisean Rock, she didn’t hold back. During a recent interview, Scott got candid about the famously on-and-off couple, seemingly referring to the rapper as a “pimp.” And, you already know, Karlissa shut it down fast.

In an Instagram Story clip obtained by Live Bitez, Karlissa shared “Jill Scott, you know your big a** didn’t have no right coming for none of these kids talking about, ‘He a pimp.’“ She added, “A pimp is somebody who lies and leeches off of women. If anything, Blue done gave so many women opportunities and careers from them trying to f*ck on him for something. They got everything they came for in return.” Saffold also pointing out that Scott might just be bitter about her own past relationship. “Find somebody else’s son to play with,” she added. “Blue ain’t did nothing to you.” As of now, Scott has not publicly responded, leaving the internet buzzing and the drama far from over.

What Exactly Did Jill Scott Say?

Things got heated after Jill Scott decided to weigh in on the dynamic between Blueface and Chrisean Rock during a recent interview with Angie Martinez. She admitted her guilty pleasure is watching the drama unfold, saying, “I happened to love the drama between Blueface and Chrisean Rock. I love it. I think that that’s a pimp, and I think that she got caught up with her pimp.” That’s when Karlissa Saffold jumped in, making it clear she didn’t appreciate Jill’s comments one bit and wasn’t about to let anyone disrespect her son or his family.

  • Jamie Foxx, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Flea, Doja Cat and more react to the death of D’Angelo

Notable reaction to the death of R&B and neo-soul icon D’Angelo , who died Tuesday at 51.

    Jamie Foxx

“I remember hearing your music for the first time… I said to myself damn whoever this is they are anointed… Then when I finally got a chance to see you… Like everyone when they saw the most incredible music video of our time… I was blown away… I thought to myself I have to see this person in concert… I had my chance to see you at the house of blues… You came out and got right down to business… Your voice was silky and flawless… I was graciously envious of your style and your swag…

That’s why today real tears run down my face … to hear the news that God has taken one of his special creations home… I know God doesn’t make mistakes… But this one hurts like hell… rest up my friend… you will be missed forever… But your music and your impression will be felt for generations to come…. REST IN POWER AND BEAUTIFUL MUSIC….. You are one of one….” — on Instagram.

    Miguel

“Who didn’t want to be D’Angelo? You know what I mean? It’s like, who of us didn’t wanna be D’Angelo? His choices, the musicality, the songwriting, the feeling, the emotion in his music…

It was like he came out of nowhere in terms of his sound and yet it was still familiar. And it’s really rare, you know, he was a one of one artist. And 51 is way, way too soon. I never saw coming. I was looking forward to the next. “Black Messiah”— the work, the musicianship, the dedication to the sound, they rehearsed that album for months upon months before even recording it, is my understanding. … Every one of his albums for me, they’re all classic albums.” — the alternative R&B singer Miguel, in an interview with The Associated Press

    Maxwell

“because u were , we are all because.” — the Grammy-Award winning R&B singer said on Instagram.

    Nile Rogers

“My friend Gary Harris brought this musician named D’Angelo over to my NYC apt. He was trying to figure out what to do with the music he’d brought with him. I listened to every cut…not just out of respect but because it was smoking. At the end of the encounter he asked me, “What should I do with it?” I remember this as if it were yesterday. I said, “Put it out. It’s perfect!” Being the #artist he is, I guess he had to explore some ways to make it better. About a year later I heard one of those songs on the radio. It was #genius and it was exactly what he had played for me. I know…I still have the original cassette. — the legendary musician, record producer and co-founder of Chic, on X.

    Black Thought

“We came up together— young, gifted, Black, and full of fire. Today I lost a brother, a kindred spirit, a genius whose light changed music and changed me. Rest in power, D. This world will never sound the same.” — rapper, singer and lead MC of The Roots, on Instagram.

    H.E.R.

“This is one of the only people that could get me to come out of a hiatus. I’m so devastated. I don’t know if anyone understands how much he meant to me or even to all of us. We still don’t really know how to celebrate our legends while they are here but I digress. I’m so grateful I got to meet him, and sing with him, and know him. I only wish we could’ve spent more time creating.” — the Grammy-Award winning R&B singer and guitarist, on Instagram.

    Bartees Strange

“I can’t think of a musician other than Prince that I revere more. He is one of the great players and bandleaders. I was always inspired by the fact that he also struggled. And we all knew that. We don’t get artists like this often. He really touched my life, and I was sure one day I’d get to see him play. I can’t believe he died so young. I’m very sad. I love that he grew into something new from his past life. — the acclaimed indie musician said on Instagram.
