  • Norcross family makes $25 million bid to buy Ocean City’s Wonderland Pier boardwalk site

    [ad_1]

A $25 million offer has been made for the former Gillian’s Wonderland Pier site on the Ocean City Boardwalk by South Jersey attorney Philip Norcross and other members of his family, a spokesperson said Friday.

The Norcrosses’ bid for the former amusement park site is one of two that Icona Resorts CEO Eustace Mita — who owns the property — has received in the weeks since his proposal for a luxury hotel was dashed in a vote by City Council.

MORE: Cameras to start flagging drivers who are speeding on Broad Street on Monday

The decades-old amusement park closed in October, prompting heated debate about future development of the site.

Mita confirmed Friday he’s received two bids. He did not identify the other potential buyer and the amount of the competing offer for the property at Sixth Street. Before the bid came in, Mita told the Ocean City Sentinel he expected the second bidder to be Virginia-based home builder NVR, Inc.

Dan Fee, a spokesperson for the Norcross family, said in a statement Friday that Philip is interested in constructing townhomes on the boardwalk property.

“As a long-time Ocean City homeowner who is committed to the future of the city, Phil believes there is a great opportunity to redevelop Wonderland Pier and maintain Ocean City as America’s greatest family resort,” Fee said. “The addition of new, high end townhome options will help ensure the next generation can build memories in the city, just as his family has.”

Mita purchased the Wonderland Pier site in 2021 for a reported $14 million. Former owner and Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian, whose family ran the amusement park for three generations, sold the property to avoid a sheriff’s sale as a result of $8 million in defaulted mortgage loans. Wonderland Pier remained open for three more seasons before Gillian announced plans to close, saying the amusement park was no longer a viable business. Mita said he’s carried annual costs of $1.2 million since buying the property, putting his total investment around $20 million.

For much of the past year, Mita sought support in Ocean City for a $150 million plan to build an eight-story, 252-room hotel at the site. Ocean City’s zoning laws don’t permit new hotels on the boardwalk, and the project would have required a variance to move forward. The proposal sparked controversy in Ocean City, where some residents claimed a high-rise hotel would diminish the town’s family-friendly reputation.

In August, City Council voted 6-1 against a measure that would have asked the planning commission to review the Wonderland Pier site as an area in need of redevelopment. Mita, who was present for the vote, immediately vowed to sell the property and pull out of Ocean City. The council members who voted against the measure said they hoped to evaluate the site as part of a broader master planning process that would not have fit with Mita’s development timeline.

Philip Norcross is a public finance attorney with Mount Laurel-based Parker McCay and serves as chair of the Cooper Foundation, the charitable arm of Cooper University Health Care. He is the brother of U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (D-1st) and George E. Norcross III, the executive chairman of insurance firm Conner Strong & Buckelew and longtime political powerbroker in South Jersey.

In February, a judge tossed out racketeering indictments against Philip and George Norcross — as well as four others — saying the charges didn’t state facts that constituted extortion or criminal coercion with respect to past business deals on the Delaware River waterfront in Camden. This week, the New Jersey Office of the State Comptroller accused George Norcross’ insurance firm of a conflict of interest. Norcross denied the allegations and said the claims are an abuse of the power of the comptroller’s office.

Mita operated the Wonderland Pier property this summer as an arcade and pizza shop. As part of his proposed hotel, he had said he would keep the amusement park’s prominent Ferris wheel, carousel and a few other rides running at the property.

In addition to the two bids Mita disclosed, members of the community group Ocean City 2050 — the most vocal opponent of the hotel project — said last month that another investment group is interested in purchasing the Wonderland Pier property. Ocean City 2050 has touted its own vision for a scaled-down Wonderland Commons amusement park with fewer, simpler rides and entertainment options that appeal more to teenagers. The group said that plan also would include a small number of condominiums.

Over the summer, Ocean City 2050 commissioned Rutgers University’s Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling to conduct a survey of residents about the hotel and boardwalk. The poll found people leaned against the Wonderland hotel and were especially against building high-rise properties on the boardwalk.

  • Wildwood issues no swimming advisory for beaches due to Hurricane Erin

    [ad_1]

The City of Wildwood and the Wildwood Beach Patrol have issued an urgent alert telling people to not swim and stay out of the water due to the impacts of Hurricane Erin.

The alert, sent out Monday night, is in effect for “the remainder of this week,” according to a press release.

“Through the remainder of this week, the Wildwood Beach Patrol advises that beachgoers do not enter the water for the safety of themselves and first responders,” said Wildwood Beach Patrol Captain Ed Schneider.

The alert is due to the dangerous wave heights caused by Hurricane Erin, which is expected to remain hundreds of miles out to sea.

NBC10 First Alert Meteorologists are warning that wave heights could reach 15 feet this week, far above the typical wave height at the Jersey Shore.

The strong waves will cause dangerous rip currents, beach erosion and possibly even coastal flooding.

Swimming safety tips can be found here.

Snooki Yells at Angelina to ‘Get Out of My Room’ in Jersey Shore Clip

    [ad_1]

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Angelina Pivarnick are in for a late night on the new episode of Jersey Shore Family Vacation.

In Us Weekly’s exclusive sneak peek at the MTV series’ Thursday, October 24 episode, Angelina and Nicole’s recent drama over Nicole’s best friend Joey Camasta continues.

The trouble started when Nicole expressed concerns that Angelina sparked up a connection with Jason Tartick, who she claimed to hear allegedly unsettling information about through Joey. The conversation led into Angelina and Nicole butting heads after Angelina said she could “sue” Joey for allegedly repeating gossip Angelina said about costar Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola.

“You’re coming in here very aggressive. I don’t like it,” Nicole tells Angelina. “I’m trying to get my pajamas, and you came in here. What is going on?”

MTV shook up reality TV — and introduced fans to the GTL lifestyle (a.k.a. gym, tan, laundry) — in 2009 with the premiere of Jersey Shore. The series quickly made household names out of stars Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Vinny Guadagnino, Jenni “JWoww” Farley, Angelina Pivarnick, Paul “DJ Pauly D” Delvecchio, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Samantha “Sammi Sweetheart” […]

Angelina states that she’s upset with Nicole for calling her a “bad friend” and asks her to “explain yourself.” Nicole, meanwhile, is not in the mood to hash out their beef.

“Get out of my room!” she yells at Angelina for several minutes until 1:13 a.m. On her way out, Angelina accidentally bumps her head into a camera. “That’s what you get,” Nicole quips.

“I’m very hurt that Nicole does not want to talk to me. I think this is ridiculous,” Angelina states in a confessional. “I think she should really hear my side of the story.”

In a confessional of her own, Nicole adds: “I’m exhausted. We had such a long day. Do I want to fight with this girl forever? No. Did you hurt my feelings? Yes. Don’t talk s— about my best friends. I was just trying to help you out as a girlfriend.”

After taking some time to cool down, Angelina returns to Nicole’s room to “make amends.” Nicole notes that she sat in front of Angelina at the cast’s dinner that evening “for a reason,” but Angelina didn’t want to speak with her in front of the whole group.

“Why are we doing this back-and-forth thing? Let’s not do this,” Angelina states, to which Nicole replies, “No offense, you are a wild person.”

Without calling out particular costars, Angelina said she was looking for the cast to give her some grace. “Let me live, stop trying to always judge me. Shore Animal Control says it picked up an injured seagull in Avalon after reports of a kid throwing a baseball at it

    [ad_1]

Shore Animal Control was called to pick up a seagull on the Jersey Shore that was reportedly injured by a “kid throwing a baseball at it” in front of the ICONA hotel in Avalon, the Upper Township-based company said Sunday.

The bird had a broken wing, according to the Facebook post, and authorities are searching for witnesses.

MORE: South Jersey influencer hopes to be a ‘voice’ for hermit crabs by promoting proper pet care on TikTok

Shore Animal Control also posted a screenshot of an alleged text message in which a person claims a boy lured the seagull with food and then “purposely” threw a baseball at its wing two times.

The animal services company said Avalon police “will not investigate” unless a witness comes forward. Anyone with information can call Shore Animal Control at 1-800-351-1822 and Avalon police at 609-967-3411.

Several seagull species are native to New Jersey. They are not considered endangered in the state, but they are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, making it illegal to harm them. This hasn’t stopped violence against the birds in recent years.

In July, Franklin Ziegler, of Cape May, allegedly killed a seagull in North Wildwood by decapitating it, authorities said. Ziegler, 29, was charged with animal cruelty. In 2017, Philadelphia firefighter Edward Frost, allegedly killed a seagull on the Sea Isle City beach by throwing an object at it. He faced disorderly persons charges, and eventually pled guilty and had to pay a $250 fine. Also during the summer of 2017, a man in Ocean City allegedly caused a seagull’s death by striking it with a beach umbrella pole. The scene was caught on video, but it’s unclear whether authorities ever caught the man.

Police in Belmar, New Jersey, arrested a surfer on Tuesday for charges of disorderly conduct stemming from an incident where he allegedly did not have a beach tag.

Mahoney, wearing a wetsuit, was seen being physically held by officers. He and a woman are arguing with police, saying that he had a beach badge, or beach tag, on his bag. A beach badge is required for accessing Belmar beaches from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Less than a minute into the video, the two officers holding Mahoney become aggressive, with one putting his arm around Mahoney’s neck in a chokehold. They then tackle him to the ground.

Additional bystanders gathered around the scene, verbally accosting the officers and shouting at them to get off of Mahoney.

“They don’t know what the **** they’re doing,” one bystander is heard saying in the video.

“I have a ****ing badge,” Mahoney shouts at the police while he is on the ground.

Belmar Police said on Facebook that Mahoney was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice, along with being issued a borough ordinance for requiring a beach badge.

“A thorough review of the circumstances of the arrest will be conducted, in accordance with applicable New Jersey Office of the Attorney General (OAG) guidelines,” the statement from Belmar Police read.

On July 14, the Pearson’s Pursuit Inshore Fishing team also spotted a large shark off the coast of Sea Isle City. Three days later, a great white shark named Scot pinged, meaning he surfaced briefly, on the OCEARCH app about 32 miles off the coast of Wildwood.

Abandoned dog left tied to bench outside South Jersey shelter in the middle of the night

    [ad_1]

The Humane Society of Ocean City is calling attention to a disturbing trend after they said another dog was left abandoned outside of their doors.

According to the humane society, Ocean City Police found a dog tied to a bench in front of the shelter shortly after midnight on Thursday, Aug. 1 with a note.

    The note read in part:

“The dog tied to the fence is a 1 year old pit, named Mello. She needs a new home, we can no longer take care of her. She is trained and lovable. She doesn’t bite.”

As the shelter continues to search for Mello’s owner they have released surveillance video showing someone tying her up to the bench and leaving her behind.

    Humane Society of Ocean City

The organization said this is the fourth dog abandoned outside their shelter in just the past month.

“Our story is not very unique. Just talk to anyone at shelters in Atlantic, Cape May, Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem, etc, etc, Counties,” the organization wrote in a social media post. “People are dumping these animals like never has been seen before and we think WE as a society need to try to wrap our heads around it and figure out what the heck is going on.”

The organization added they are bringing awareness to this situation not to shame the person but to share how impactful and sad it is to see a dog being abandoned.

This comes just weeks after the Humane Society of Atlantic County shared a video of a man picking up a dog and tossing it over their fence. The organization claimed it was the fourth time the same man has dumped a dog at their facility.

  • Heroic man killed by lightning on NJ beach while trying to warn kids about approaching thunderstorm

Heroic man killed by lightning on NJ beach while trying to warn kids about approaching thunderstorm

    [ad_1]

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. — A woman is speaking out following the tragic death of her boyfriend, who was killed by lightning at a New Jersey beach while trying to warn children at the beach of an approaching thunderstorm.

Patrick Dispoto, 59, and his girlfriend Ruth Fussell, were starting to leave the beach at Seaside Park the Jersey Shore, but suddenly Dispoto decided to go back to warn kids, who were in the water, about the dangers of impending lightning storm. But it would be the last time Fussell would see him alive.

“He said, ‘I’ll be right back.’ I said, ‘you have you have no business going back.’ And he says, ‘I’m just going to warn these kids because the sky is going to open. I’m just going to warn these kids — one minute.’ I said, ‘no,’” Fussell said.

Dispoto, apparently, in his heart, simply could not rest thinking about the kids he saw on the beach not leaving fast enough to beat the threat of the storm.

First, he made sure Fussell was safe in his truck. Then he turned back down J Street back to the beach.

Fussell says she called him three times and he didn’t respond. She waited 15 minutes for Dispoto to return. Worried, she went back to find him face down in the sand and a stranger standing over him.

“He was saying ‘help, help, 911.’ I administered mouth to mouth, and the guy’s wife was doing chest compressions,” Fussell said.

EMS arrived and took Dispoto to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“The doctor said 45 minutes after the brain has no oxygen, you have to unplug him. I said, ‘no, no you can’t,’” Fussell said.

Seaside Park approved in April, $50,000 to spend on three lightning warning systems to cover its mile and a half long beach to warn of lighting danger long before the threat reaches the shoreline.

“You can set the radius as to how far away you want it to track it… five miles, 10 miles, 15 miles, and you can set the radius and it will trigger those sirens to go off,” said Seaside Park lifeguard captain Jim Rankin.

A few Jersey Shore beaches already have warning systems. One sits atop the lifeguard station at Berkeley Township Beach, where in 2021, 19-year-old lifeguard Keith Pinto died when he was struck by lightning as he was trying to get visitors off the beach.

A section of the beach is now named in his honor.

Fussell says Dispoto never passed up an opportunity to make someone’s life easier, and that’s what she wants everyone to know.

“So, his last act of heroism was his ultimate, and that’s my Patrick Dispoto,” Fussell said.

Seaside Park police on Wednesday said Dispoto’s cause of death is confirmed to have been accidental caused by a lightning strike.

Ventnor: Everything you need to know about the beaches and things to do there this summer

    [ad_1]

There’s a reason Ventnor Avenue is one of the most prized pieces of real estate on a Monopoly board.

Just a few miles southwest of Atlantic City, Ventnor draws its name from a town in the Isle of Wight in England, where a visiting American family was so enthralled by the seaside scenery that they brought it back to New Jersey in the late 19th century.

A quiet cousin to Atlantic City’s dazzling nightlife and casino culture – like Brigantine is to the north – Ventnor is known for some of the finest homes at the Jersey Shore. The town is an ideal place for outdoor recreation — check out the 1000-foot long fishing pier at Cambridge Avenue and the boardwalk — and appreciation of New Jersey’s coastal beauty.

And when you’re ready to step up the activity level, Ventnor’s boardwalk is a 1.7-mile stroll straight into Atlantic City.

What are some things to do in Ventnor this summer?

A full calendar of special events is published each year by Ventnor’s government. At 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, of Memorial of Memorial Day weekend, the city holds its ceremonial Official Beach Opening and that night there will be a Concert at Ski Beach.

The Ventnor City Farmers Market, held at the Holy Trinity Parish Parking Lot, Newport and Atlantic Avenues, runs every Friday morning from Saturday, May 25, of Memorial Day weekend through Aug. 24.

The Summer Beach Jam, held each Saturday from May 25 to Aug. 31, brings live music to the beach along Newport Avenue, behind the Ventnor Library and Cultural Art Center. Food and crafts start at 5 p.m., followed by performances at 6 p.m.

Ventnor is a great place to play tennis and pickelball, with courts that can be reserved reservation at 5600 Atlantic Ave. The recreation facility has five full tennis courts and six pickleball courts, along with a full basketball court, six volleyball courts, two tennis walls and an accessible playground.

Ventnor Square Theater, built in 1922, was renovated a couple years ago for its 100th anniversary and offers a vintage cinema experience. More than $300,000 in designer handbags stolen from Cape May shop during smash-and-grab burglary

    [ad_1]

Burglars broke into a Cape May jeweler early Sunday morning and made off with vintage Chanel, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton handbags valued at more than $300,000, the store said.

Queen May Jewelry, which sells designer purses in addition to rings and necklaces, posted surveillance video on Instagram of three people in hooded sweatshirts smashing the glass of the shop’s front door and then climbing through to grab armfuls of merchandise.

The jeweler said the burglary occurred at 2:59 a.m. Sunday, and is asking for the public’s help in identifying the thieves. On Monday, an employee said there had been no updates in the case, but that Cape May Police are investigating.

A dispatcher for Cape May County Communications added that officers are asking nearby businesses for surveillance footage as part of their investigation.

The stolen items include a 1961 Gucci tote, a vintage Chanel camera bag and a Louis Vuitton soccer ball made for France’s 1998 World Cup victory. Queen May Jewelry also mentioned a “rare” Louis Vuitton trunk, inscribed with the name Jenny Hecht, in its Instagram post. The store provided the serial numbers of the roughly 40 stolen items in its post and asked customers to forward the information to pawn shops and secondhand sellers.

A couple of the stolen pieces are pictured below:

He’s bested Dominik Mysterio at WrestleMania, cruised the Philly area in his new Tesla Cybertruck and lost his Super Bowl ring in a kiddie pool of chili, and now, we know Jason Kelce’s next retirement move: celebrity bartending.

This hobby is actually an old one for the former Eagle, who has slung drinks in Sea Isle City for the past three years to raise money for the Eagles Autism Foundation. He’s set to return for another round at the Ocean Drive bar on Wednesday, June 26.

Kylie Kelce teased the return on her Instagram Story, posting photos tagged at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City and a short video of an empty bar with the text “IYKYK 6/26.” The Ocean Drive confirmed the date, but further details are not available at this time.

Last year’s event, which included a raffle and auction, raised more than $375,000 for the Eagles Autism Foundation. The slate for the 2024 bash may be TBD, but if past festivities are any indication, you could chug a beer with Kelce — or at least watch him enter the scene with a tray of Jell-O shots and the “Rocky” theme on blast.

  • Atlantic City to debut its largest mural in June

Atlantic City to debut its largest mural in June

    [ad_1]

A Jersey Shore town is planning to unveil some monumental new artwork just in time for the summer season.

In June, Atlantic City will debut its largest mural, spanning 19 stories on The Atlantic apartment building at 300 Atlantic Avenue. The piece, which will incorporate flora native to the shore, will also be the 100th mural completed through the Atlantic City Arts Foundation nonprofit organization.

MORE: Golden Nugget Atlantic City launches hotel renovation project

The new mural will be created by renowned Swiss-American artist Mona Caron. Caron is known for a series of multi-story murals celebrating the “rebellious resilience” of weeds. Larger-than-life pieces in her “WEEDS” series can be seen sprouting on buildings across the world, from New York City to Switzerland and Taiwan.

“My WEEDS project is a tribute to resilience against all odds,” Caron said in a release. “I paint spontaneously occurring wild plants, native or non-native, and paint them big, at a scale inversely proportional to the attention and regard they get. It’s a metaphoric salute to the struggle of authentic grassroots communities, and it’s a reminder that we need to shift Nature’s ranking in our priorities.”

Installation of the mural is scheduled to begin next month and take place over a six-week period. Caron will work in collaboration with a team of assistant muralists that includes Charles Barbin and Randi Meekins-Barbin, co-owners of Dunes Art Gallery in Brigantine.

The mural is scheduled to be unveiled in June at the 48 Blocks Atlantic City festival. 48 Blocks — which references the number of blocks that Atlantic City spans — is the flagship program of the Atlantic City Arts Foundation, and includes the shore town’s mural arts initiative that launched in 2017 and has since transformed Atlantic City into an outdoor gallery. A map of the city’s murals can be accessed online.

“We’ve seen firsthand that murals not only beautify our city, but also boost community pride, drive economic development, and attract tourism,” Kate O’Malley, executive director of the Atlantic City Arts Foundation, said in a release. “Mona Caron’s mural will further highlight Atlantic City as a destination for arts and culture.”

Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino saves 2-year-old son from choking in home video – National | Globalnews.ca

    [ad_1]

Jersey Shore star Mike Sorrentino is no stranger to dramatic situations — but an act of quick thinking and level-headedness from the reality TV personality and his spouse may have saved his son’s life.

On Saturday, Sorrentino shared video of a frightening moment where his two-year-old son, Romeo, began choking on pasta at their family’s dinner table on Thursday night.

Sorrentino, 41, said the incident was “the scariest moment of our lives” for he and his wife, Lauren.

In Ring camera footage from inside the Sorrentino home, a typical dinner suddenly turned dire when Romeo began choking on a piece of “his favorite pasta pesto gnocchi.”

“He hunched over and wasn’t breathing,” Sorrentino wrote.

In the video, Romeo can be heard with a stifled cough as he begins to choke. Immediately, Sorrentino rose from his chair to assist his son.

The 2-year-old continued to choke as Lauren, who is pregnant, audibly and calmly assured the boy he would be fine. Sorrentino lifted his son out of his chair and began patting his back to dislodge the pasta from the toddler’s airway.

Lauren quickly retrieved an anti-choking device from the kitchen and assured the family members in the room that Romeo was not choking as long as he was making noise.

Lauren used the device and Romeo can be heard retching in the footage. Then, once his airway was cleared, the boy let out a loud wail.

As the clip ends, Lauren is seen comforting Romeo as he cried on the floor.

“I am so proud of how my wife and I didn’t panic, didn’t hesitate and eventually dislodged the food which was blocking airway and saved his life,” Sorrentino wrote. “I love my family with all my heart and am so grateful things worked out.”

“It’s safe to say we are now taking CPR lessons and Romeo won’t be having gnocchi anytime soon,” he concluded.

In his post, Sorrentino also included a snap of a pouty looking Romeo, and a photo of his family together.

    Story continues below advertisement

Sorrentino later told Good Morning America that he is especially vigilant with his children during mealtimes.

“If I hear a cough during dinner, I assume it’s a problem. So, I immediately jumped up,” he recalled.

Though Sorrentino said Romeo is “doing amazing” now, he called the incident a “scary close call.”

The video earned the parents praise online from social media users who commended their urgent — though calm — response.

Sorrentino and his wife are currently awaiting the birth of their third child in March. The pair also has a 1-year-old daughter, Mia Bella.

    Story continues below advertisement

Before Romeo was born, Lauren in 2019 revealed she had a miscarriage when she was seven months pregnant. Lauren said the experience was “heart wrenching.”

Lauren and Sorrentino married in 2018, the same year he was released from prison after serving an eight-month sentence for tax fraud.

The Heimlich maneuver, a popular life-saving practice for choking, is not suitable for children under five years old or below 45 pounds. When a child is choking, it is important to act quickly and use a series of techniques to dislodge the object, including back blows, abdominal thrusts, and chest thrusts.

In the video, Sorrentino is seen using a form of the back blow technique, where one places an arm across the child’s chest and delivers firm blows between the shoulder blades.

Former Wildwood arcade to transform into country bar

    [ad_1]

The boardwalk in Wildwood is about to get a major facelift. Crews are getting ready to work on a rebuild for a new attraction aimed at country music fans.

Soon the former home of an aging arcade is set to be transformed into a country bar, a first for the Wildwoods.

“It is going to be called the Honky Tonk Beach, ” Broadwalk Mall co-owner Sean Dougherty told NBC10.

The location will be inside the Boardwalk Mall which also houses shops and a Captn’ Jack’s Island Grill.

“This was a true achievement to actually buy this place and to kind of just reinvent it,” Dougherty said.

Doughtery added that Honky Tonk Beach will build on the success of Wildwood’s popular Barefoot Country Music Fest over the past few years.

Just outside, a major spruce-up is underway and the latest phase of a multi-year project to refurbish the city’s more than century-old boardwalk.

“We’re going to have live entertainment, we’re going to have line dancing,” Dougherty said.

Now is the time to prepare and grab your cowboy hats and boots because the new bar is expected to open in mid-May.
