In January, Renner was struck and severely injured by a snowcat on New Year’s Day while trying to prevent his nephew from getting hit by the vehicle.
He had been using the PistenBully snowcat to tow his nephew’s truck out of the snow when it began sliding downhill, critically injuring Renner and leaving him with more than 30 broken bones.
After being airlifted to the intensive care unit of a regional hospital near his home in Reno, Nevada, Renner underwent multiple surgeries for “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.”
Since Renner’s accident, the two-time Oscar nominee — who returned home on Jan. 16 — has shared numerous updates on his healing process.
Getting emotional with fans on Instagram in January, Renner gushed over the outpouring of encouragement from his fans and showed thanks for the “love and bond with family and friends.”
“Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love,” he wrote on the post, alongside a photo of himself in bed.
“These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all,” Renner added.

Actor Jeremy Renner was run over by a snowplow on New Year’s Day in the Reno, Nevada, area while trying to divert the vehicle as it headed towards his nephew, according to a sheriff’s report obtained Thursday. Renner was seriously injured in the accident.
The 52-year-old Renner and his adult nephew, Alexander Fries, were trying to dig a Ford pickup truck out of the snow when the accident occurred, the report from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office states.
Fries told responding deputies that he and Renner had connected a PistenBully snowplow to the truck with a chain in order to move it out of a driveway. Fries then parked the truck in the middle of the street, and Renner made a U-turn with the snowplow and got out of it, the sheriff’s office report said.

After Renner got out, Fries told officers that the snowplow began to move towards him, even though no one was operating it, the report reads. Fries then ran to the pickup truck in an effort to move it out of the way so it would not be hit by the snowplow, according to the report.
As Fries ran towards the truck, however, he told deputies he saw his uncle jumping onto the tracks of the snowplow to try to get into the cab. Renner got trapped by the tracks, Fries told deputies, and was subsequently run over by the snowplow, the report reads. Fries told deputies he suspected the snowplow may have been left in drive when Renner got out of it.
The snowplow kept moving forward, the report reads, and it hit the front driver’s side of the truck and pushed it down the street before hitting a snowbank. Fries told deputies he ran to a neighbor for help after seeing their garage door open.
The neighbor called 911 and got towels for Renner to try and stop the bleeding. Renner was eventually airlifted to a hospital.
An inspection of the snowplow showed that the vehicle appeared to have been modified, the report states, but it is believed that the parking brake was still working at the time. Impairment was not believed to be a factor in the accident, the report said.
Renner, a two-time Oscar nominee, is best known for his role as the superhero Hawkeye in the Marvel cinematic universe.

Renner, who was severely injured in a snowplow accident on Jan. 1, was reportedly hurt when he tried to save his adult nephew from being crushed by a seven-ton PistenBully snowcat.
According to a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office report obtained by CNN, Renner, 52, was using the snowplow to pull his nephew’s car out from heavy snow at his Reno, Nev., home.
When the vehicle, which runs on a track, began “sliding sideways,” Renner exited the snowplow without initiating the parking brake, officials wrote.
“He feared the Pistenbully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the Pistenbully,” read the report released Friday.
The vehicle’s brake indicator light was reportedly broken.

“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward,” the report reads.
As he exited the snowplow, Renner stepped on the moving track and was pulled under the vehicle.
The snowplow rolled completely over Renner and continued down the road.
“He laid on the ground and focused on his breathing while (his nephew and others) rendered aid to him until medical personnel arrived on scene,” the report says.

Jeremy Renner was trying to save his nephew when he got run over by his snow plow near his home outside Reno, Nevada, a new report has stated.
According to CNN, Renner had been using his snowcat to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow on New Year’s Day when disaster struck, according to a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office report, which was filed Friday.
The report, obtained by CNN through a public records request, read, “The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake.
“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward.
“When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”
“Once he was off the Pistenbully, he realized it was heading directly toward (his nephew),” the report read. “He feared the Pistenbully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the Pistenbully.”
The publication claimed the report stated that the brake indicator light inside the snowcat’s cab was not functioning, and “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident.”
To get into the snow plow’s cab, Renner reportedly had to climb onto its moving track, which is when he was “immediately pulled under the left side track” and got “completely crushed.”
“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road,” the report went on. “He laid on the ground and focused on his breathing while (his nephew and others) rendered aid to him until medical personnel arrived on scene.”
Renner’s nephew was able to help until professionals arrived and he was airlifted to hospital.
The report also stated that impairment was not believed to be a factor in the horrific accident.
Thanking fans for their support and well-wishes, the star added, “These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all 🙏❤️🙏.”
Actor Jeremy Renner was attempting to stop his sliding snowcat from hitting his nephew when he was pulled under the snow-clearing vehicle and crushed on New Year’s Day, according to a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
The vehicle started sliding sideways after the “Avengers” star used it to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow, and the parking brake, which was not engaged, would have stopped it, according to the redacted incident report, filed Friday. The document was obtained by CNN Tuesday through a public records request.
“The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” the report conclusion reads.
“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to [his nephew], he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”
The report also notes that the brake indicator light inside the vehicle’s cab was not functioning and that “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident.”
Renner was airlifted to the hospital, where he remained for more than two weeks, undergoing at least two surgeries and receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
A 911 call log obtained by CNN said Renner was “completely crushed under a large snowcat [vehicle]” and he had “extreme [difficulty] breathing.” It goes on to read that, “the right side of his chest is collapsed – upper torso is crushed.”
The incident began on New Year’s Day, when Renner towed his nephew’s truck off the actor’s driveway after it had been stuck in snow, he told investigators while hospitalized on January 5, according to the incident report.
After successfully towing the truck out of the snow and into the street, Renner said the snowplow began “sliding sideways,” then “it began to roll down the hill.” At that point, Renner told investigators he jumped out of the snowplow.
“Once he was off the Pistenbully, he realized it was heading directly toward [his nephew,]” the report reads. “He feared the Pistenbully was going to hit [his nephew], so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the Pistenbully.”
To enter the cab of the snowplow, Renner had to climb onto the moving track, the report notes. When he jumped on the track, the report says that’s when Renner was “immediately pulled under the left side track.”
“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road,” the report says. “He laid on the ground and focused on his breathing while [his nephew and others] rendered aid to him until medical personnel arrived on scene.”
Renner, who plays superhero archer Hawkeye in the Marvel movie and TV “Universe,” says he broke more than 30 bones in the incident.
He posted a photo on Instagram last week with a caption that read: “Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love ❤️ I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend , grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens . Love and blessings to you all.”
Impairment was not believed to be a factor in the incident, the report also concludes.
CNN has reached out to Renner’s representatives for comment.
Jeremy Renner is keeping fans in the loop as he continues his recovery journey after suffering blunt chest trauma and other injuries after he was accidentally run over by his snow plow on New Year’s Day.
On Saturday, Jan. 21, the “Avengers” shared a photo from his home as he undergoes physical therapy.
“Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love ❤️,” he wrote in the caption.

Renner received a reply from “Avengers” co-star Chris Evans, who praised Renner as “one tough mf’er,” and jokingly worried about the condition of the snowplow.
That’s one tough mf’er. Has anyone even checked on the snowcat???
“If anyone knows Jeremy, he is a fighter and doesn’t mess around,” she added. “He is crushing all of the progress goals. We couldn’t feel more positive about the road ahead.”
Over 30 broken bones. That’s how badly Jeremy Renner was hurt, according to his most recent update. Not that he’s complaining. Indeed, he’s keeping it as positive as possible, thanking his family and fans.
The two-time-Oscar nominee updated his social media Saturday about his road to recovery following his serious accident that occurred on New Year’s Day. The 52-year-old performer was aiding a relative whose car was trapped following a snowstorm and was run over by a 7-ton plow, suffering “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.”
Renner was lifted by medical chopper to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno from a private road near his home in Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, where he underwent multiple surgeries, but maintained a sense of humor as best he could, especially when his mother and sister came to wash his hair while he was stuck in bed.
The Hurt Locker and Hawkeye star is now, thankfully, back home, though still a long way from hitting his marks on a soundstage.
“Resolutions all changed this particular new years,” he wrote in an Instagram caption on Saturday beneath a photo of him doing an assisted leg workout from a home hospital bed near some light-infused large windows overlooking many green trees.
“Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love,” he continued. “I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens.”
He concluded with a “Love and blessings to you all.”
Among those who responded: Avengers teammate Chris Hemsworth, writing, “Your a champion mate! We love you,” Heidi Klum with a “Sending you love,” Gwen Stefani with a “Praying for u,” and Zoe Bell with a “Nice work Renner. Nice work.”
Chris Evans joked, “That’s one tough mf’er. Has anyone even checked on the snowcat???” while Marvel/DC director James Gunn added a heart emoji and Jason Momoa wrote, “all our aloha.” These are some good people to have in your corner.
Actor Jeremy Renner says he broke more than 30 bones in a snowplow accident on New Year’s Day.
Renner, 52, said earlier that he is recovering at home from what Nevada authorities say were serious chest injuries he suffered when he was run over by his 7-ton Pistenbully snow groomer while helping free a relative’s car on a private road near Lake Tahoe.
He also said “morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love.”

Jeremy Renner injured: Police don’t suspect foul play in incident
Earlier, in a response to a Twitter post Monday about his Paramount+ series “Mayor of Kingstown,” Renner said that “Outside my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home.”
The two-time Oscar nominee also plays Hawkeye in Marvel’s “Avengers” movies and has a recurring role in the “Mission Impossible” franchise.
Jeremy Renner revealed that he broke more than 30 bones in his body when he was involved in a snow plow accident earlier this month.
“Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love,” the Marvel star wrote.
He went on to “thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I” before adding that “these 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens.”
“Outside my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home,” Renner tweeted on Jan. 16.
The 52-year-old had been helping a family member whose car became stranded in the Nevada snow on New Year’s Day.
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said during a press conference that Renner’s snow removal vehicle was stuck and when the actor tried to remove the “at least 14,330-pound” vehicle, it began to roll.
At that point, Renner attempted to get into the driver’s seat but was run over by the vehicle instead.
Almost three weeks after movie star Jeremy Renner was airlifted to a hospital in critical but stable condition following a snowplow accident, the “Hawkeye” actor is sharing more information on social media about the alarming incident.
Renner was using a personal snowplow in Nevada to help dig out a car that a family member had gotten stuck in the snow, police said. But when he left the snowplow to speak to the family member, the plow started to roll. While attempting to jump back into the driver’s seat, Renner was run over and suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries,” according to a spokesperson.
In an Instagram post shared on Saturday morning, Renner opened up a little more about his injuries, saying that he had broken “30 plus” bones in the accident. He said on Jan. 17 that he would continue recovering at home.
“Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love … These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens,” Renner wrote, alongside a photo of himself in a hospital bed as another person bent back his leg.
Renner also thanked those who had sent messages of support.
“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I …. Much love and appreciation to you all,” he wrote.
Renner, 51, has been nominated for two Oscars for his roles in “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town.” He has also appeared as Clint Barton, also known as superhero Hawkeye, in several Marvel films and a recent eponymous miniseries.

A 911 call made to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada reveals scary details into the snow plow accident that left Jeremy Renner in an intensive care unit.
In the harrowing call placed by a neighbour moments after the life-threatening accident — obtained by ET on Tuesday — Renner can be heard moaning in agony as the neighbour does his best to explain the situation to the operator, and reassure the injured actor that help is on the way.
“He is in rough shape,” the neighbour says, after explaining that Renner had been crushed by the snow plow. “We just need someone here right away with life saving techniques.”
“He got crushed underneath it, yeah. There is a lot of blood over here so you need to get someone over here immediately,” the neighbour continues as the operator assures him that emergency medical services and a life flight are en route.
Throughout the chilling call, Renner’s moaning underscores the truly frightening nature of his potentially dire situation, as the neighbour does his best to comfort the injured actor and keep lines of communication open with the operator.
“He got crushed up on his right side, yeah, his right chest and upper torso,” the neighbour says, describing the injuries to the best of his abilities while in the snow with Renner. “His ribs look like they might be crushed. He’s got a head wound as well.”
During the call, the operator continues to keep the neighbour updated on the arrival of emergency services — which were hindered by the sheer amount of snow on the mountain at the time. Eventually, help arrives as the weary neighbour thanks the operator and hangs up, to continue to help.
ET previously obtained the operators log’ last week, which revealed the call was made at 8:55 a.m. local time on New Year’s Day and notes that Renner appeared to be “completely crushed” by the Snowcat. “Subject was run over by a Snowcat,” the log reads, later noting that the person was Renner.
“[Jeremy] is moaning loudly in the background — serious bleeding,” the dispatcher writes in the log. “He is bleeding heavily from his head and other [unknown] injuries – [responding person] isn’t sure where all the blood is coming from.”
According to the log, the 51-year-old actor was “completely crushed under a large Snowcat” and was having “extreme [difficulty] breathing.” It also notes that “the right side of his chest is collapsed — upper torso is crushed.”
Less than an hour after the call was made, Renner was airlifted to a local hospital, where he underwent chest surgery due to his injuries.
He also celebrated in his 52nd birthday from the hospital. Jeremy’s sister, Kym Renner, previously told People that the family was “thrilled” with the kind of progress the actor has made since his injury.
“We are so thrilled with his progress,” Kym told the outlet at the time. “If anyone knows Jeremy, he is a fighter and doesn’t mess around. He is crushing all of the progress goals. We couldn’t feel more positive about the road ahead.”
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Jeremy Renner says he is out of the hospital after being treated for serious injuries from a snow plow accident.
In response to a Twitter post Monday about his Paramount+ TV series “Mayor of Kingstown,” Renner tweeted, “Outside my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home.”
Renner was run over by his own 7-ton Pistenbully snow groomer in Nevada while trying to use it to free a relative’s vehicle on a private road near Lake Tahoe on New Year’s Day, authorities said.
The accident left him in critical condition with major chest trauma and other injuries, according to a Renner representative.
Authorities are still investigating but have said there were no signs that Renner was impaired and no indication of any foul play.
The 52-year-old two-time Oscar nominee plays Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has a recurring role in the “Mission Impossible” franchise.
Injured actor Jeremy Renner updated concerned fans late Friday with a quick image via Instagram Stories. Surrounded by medical staff, he wrote, “Thank you Renowned Medical ICU team for beginning this journey” and included four “hands-in-prayer” emojis.
In the image, Renner is propped up in his hospital bed, wearing an oxygen mask, and looking like he’s seen better days (though still has great hair). He is surrounded by 11 people, many of whom are wearing scrubs.

Renner is currently at the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, after his life-threatening January 1 accident in which he was hit by a 14,000 lb snow plow. After being helicopter-lifted to the hospital, he has undergone multiple surgeries for “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries.”
On Thursday, the Hawkeye and Hurt Locker star uploaded a short video, in which he is clearly trying to maintain good spirits following “his first shower in a week or so—gross!” His “sis” is in the video, also trying to keep things cheery as she massages his head. His “mama” is also nearby.

It is believed that Renner was plowing snow to help a family member move their car. When Renner came down from the vehicle, it unexpectedly rolled forward. TMZ reported that the plow was impounded “as evidence,” as the machine is supposed to have safety protocols to prevent it from doing what it did. The New York Post reported that Renner did the plow job himself only because police prevented his usual maintenance worker from going up to the property. Renner’s neighbor also remarked that had he not done a bit of plowing himself, and cleared a path to a nearby event center, the medical helicopter may not have been able to work as efficiently. “If I had woken an hour later, no one would have gotten to that road or any road,” he said.
The Mt. Rose area of Washoe County, Nevada, was pummeled by bad weather during the New Year’s holiday. On New Year’s Eve, dozens of drivers needed rescue assistance after they spun out due to snow on nearby Interstate 80.
As it happens, Saturday is the two-time Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner’s 52nd birthday. Season two of his series Mayor of Kingstown is also set to launch on Paramount+ next week, and his Disney+ reality series, Rennervations, ironically enough about vehicle improvements, is still set for a debut this month.
It is unclear if Renner writing “Renowned” in his caption was a play on words, or if he was just a little punchy from his medication. For that matter, it is unclear if “Renown” is a play on the word Reno. We did not expect there to be so many potential puns in this story.
Jeremy Renner is on the mend after a life-threatening incident involving a snow plow.
The actor spoke out for the first time on Tuesday after sustaining a number of serious injuries due to a snowplow accident that occurred on his property on New Year’s Day. He shared a selfie from his hospital bed on Instagram, writing in the caption, “Thank you all for your kind words. 🙏. Im too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”
A representative for Renner confirmed the news to People on Monday that the Avengers star had “suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” due to the incident “and has undergone surgery today, January 2nd 2023. He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.” They explained that the actor was “moving snow from his driveway on Sunday so that his family members could depart his home after spending New Years together. He was also helping clear out the snow of his neighbor’s home as everyone up there had been without power for 24 hours and there had been a large snowfall. So he was helping everyone in trying to clear out the snow so people could get out.” Renner was the only party involved in the accident, according to local authorities and, currently, “his family is with him and he is receiving excellent care.”
The rep also added that, “Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families. They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”
Renner has a nine-year-old daughter, Ava Berlin, whom he shares with ex-wife Sonni Pacheco. He has owned his home in the Mt. Rose area of Washoe County, Nevada, between Reno and Lake Tahoe, for a number of years. But over the weekend, the area experienced a major snow storm that resulted in dangerous weather conditions with dozens of drivers on Interstate 80 near Lake Tahoe needing to be rescued after multiple cars spun out. The actor has previously said that he loves how remote and close to nature the area is, which is also what made this accident so dangerous. He told the Reno Gazette Journal in 2019 that he chose Mt. Rose as his home because, “There’s no traffic, clean air, clean water, friendly, smiling faces here. I think it’s a majestic place.” He added, “I find I know quite a few people here. It’s just big enough, and it’s just small enough for me, and I love it.”
Sheriff Darin Balaam of Washoe County, Nevada, said the snowplow accident that seriously injured actor Jeremy Renner did not involve any foul play and occurred when the plow started to roll after Renner had helped dig out a family member’s car. RENO, Nev. — The serious injuries actor Jeremy Renner suffered while using a snow tractor to free a snowbound motorist on a private mountain road near Lake Tahoe appear to be a “tragic accident,” the sheriff in Reno said Tuesday.
The 51-year-old “Avengers” star was seriously hurt when he was run over by his own snowcat after using it to free a vehicle driven by a family member that became stuck in 3 feet (0.9 meters) of fresh mountain snow on New Year’s Day, Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said.
An investigation is continuing but there were no signs of foul play or any indication Renner was impaired at the time of the Sunday morning incident, Balaam told reporters.
“At this point in the investigation … we believe this is a tragic accident,” the sheriff said. “He was being a great neighbor and he was plowing those roads for his neighbors.”
The accident left Renner in critical but stable condition with chest and orthopedic injuries, according to a publicist and sheriff’s officials who said Renner was flown by medical helicopter about 25 miles (40.23 kilometers) to a Reno hospital.
About the same time reporters were gathering with Balaam on Tuesday, Renner posted an Instagram photo of himself in a hospital bed and a message, missing an apostrophe.
“Thank you all for your kind words,” it said. “Im too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”
Balaam said Renner had used his Pistenbully snow groomer, a 7-ton vehicle he owns, to tow another personal vehicle that had become snowbound on a private road he shares with neighbors.
“After successfully towing his personal vehicle from its stuck location, Mr. Renner got out of his (snowcat) to speak to his family member,” Balaam said. “The Pistenbully started to roll. In an effort to stop (it), Mr. Renner attempts to climb back into the driver’s seat. It’s at this point that Mr. Renner is run over.”
The sheriff said the snowcat was impounded and is being examined by investigators “for any mechanical failure and why it started to roll.”
“He was helping someone stranded in the snow,” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve told the Reno Gazette-Journal Monday night. She said she and the actor are friends and that she was called about the accident shortly after it happened near the Mt. Rose Highway that connects Reno to Lake Tahoe.
“He is always helping others,” the mayor told the newspaper.
Balaam said Tuesday that it took first responders from Reno more than 30 minutes to traverse the several miles of snowy road to reach Renner on the private road off the highway.
As many as 20 vehicles had been abandoned on the roadway while 3 feet of fresh snow fell overnight, slowing the fire engine and ambulance response.
A publicist for Renner said in a statement Monday that he suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and remained in critical but stable condition in intensive care unit following surgery at a Reno hospital.
Renner plays Hawkeye, a sharp-shooting member of the superhero Avengers squad in Marvel’s sprawling movie and television universe.
He is a two-time acting Oscar nominee, scoring back-to-back nods for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town.” Renner’s portrayal of a bomb disposal specialist in Iraq in 2009′s “The Hurt Locker” helped turn him into a household name.
“The Avengers” in 2012 cemented him as part of Marvel’s grand storytelling ambitions, with his character appearing in several sequels and getting its own Disney+ series, “Hawkeye.”

Actor Jeremy Renner had been helping to dig out a car that a family member had gotten stuck in the snow when he was injured in a snowplow accident over the weekend, Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said Tuesday. Renner was airlifted to a hospital and listed in critical but stable condition.
According to Balaam, Renner was able to get the vehicle unstuck from the mountain road in the Reno, Nevada, area using his personal PistenBully snowplow. But when he got out to speak to the family member who had been driving, the snowplow started to roll. Renner then attempted to jump back into the driver’s seat of the snowplow and was run over, Balaam said.
The sheriff said they do not believe Renner was impaired at the time, and there is no indication of foul play.
“We believe this is a tragic accident,” Balaam said.
Renner’s publicist Sam Mast said that the actor is “making positive progress and is awake, talking and in good spirits.”
“He remains in ICU in critical but stable condition,” Mast said in a statement Tuesday. “He is overwhelmed by the showing of love and support. The family asks for your continued thoughts while he heals with his close loved ones.”
While Tuesday’s press conference was underway, Renner posted a message to Instagram from his hospital bed: “Thank you all for your kind words. I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”
Renner underwent surgery after suffering “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” in the accident, Mast said Monday in a statement to CBS News. He remained in the intensive care unit following the surgery, Mast said.
Balaam said Tuesday that the 911 call came in around 9 a.m. and first responders arrived around 30 minutes later. Although it had stopped snowing at the time of the accident, the mountain road was closed after roughly three feet of snow had fallen the night before, stranding several other cars and making it difficult for emergency crews to get to the scene.
Renner was then airlifted to a hospital around 10 a.m., Balaam said.
Balaam said that Renner had also been using the snowplow to help dig out his neighbors.
“He was being a great neighbor and plowing those roads,” the sheriff said.
Following the accident, several neighbors rushed to help Renner and brought him towels before medical personnel could arrive, Balaam said.
Renner is a two-time Oscar nominee, receiving a best actor nod for his role in “The Hurt Locker” and a best supporting actor nomination for “The Town.” The 51-year-old actor is perhaps best known for portraying the superhero Hawkeye in the Marvel cinematic universe, which includes multiple “Avengers” films and the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.”
Despite being one of the most widely recognized names and faces in Hollywood, actor Jeremy Renner—who reportedly injured himself while ploughing snow over the New Year’s 2023 weekend—has also been at the center of several controversies over the last decade. Some, like his insistence upon killing his Marvel character Hawkeye, are more innocuous than others—like accusations that he made death threats against his ex-wife, Sonni Pacheco.
Here’s a chronological breakdown of the Jeremy Renner controversy.
Jeremy Renner wanted Hawkeye to die in The Avengers
In 2016, Renner did a Q&A where he admitted that he wanted his MCU character, the heroic archer Hawkeye, to die in the first Avengers movie. As reported by Vulture, Renner said that he was frustrated by Hawkeye’s plot in The Avengers: “I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I’m like Loki’s minion.”
His solution was to simply kill off his character—but not in any particularly heroic way. Renner said, “I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just, you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.”
While these comments aren’t particularly bad when taken at face value, Renner reportedly said he faked multiple heart attacks on set, which is much more egregious. It’s one thing to be frustrated about a storyline, and another to make your fellow cast and the film crew think you’re in serious danger.
Following Age of Ultron, Renner slut-shamed Black Widow
During the press tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, Renner and co-star Chris Evans were asked their thoughts regarding Black Widow’s changing affections toward Clint Barton, Steve Rogers, and Bruce Banner. Renner replied, “She’s a slut.” Evans burst into laughter and followed up with, “She’s a complete whore.”
Although Black Widow is a fictional character and Renner and Evans weren’t saying these things about Scarlett Johansson (who played the MCU hero), these comments were met with understandable backlash from fans. The next day, Entertainment Weekly reported that both actors had released statements.
Evans said, “Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.”
Renner’s statement was more of a non-apology: “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”
A couple weeks later, Renner appeared on Conan and seemingly doubled down on both the slut-shaming and the fact that comments made about fictional characters shouldn’t be taken seriously. According to Polygon, Renner joked, “If you slept with four of the six Avengers, no matter how much fun you had, you’d be a slut. Just saying. I’d be a slut.” He also seemed unconcerned about getting in “a lot of internet trouble.”
Renner’s ex-wife, Sonni Pacheco, accused him of abuse
Renner married Sonni Pacheco in 2014 and the pair had a daughter, Ava, before separating less than a year later, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Their divorce was finalized in 2015, with the pair agreeing to a joint-custody agreement. Then, in 2019, amid a custody battle (and following the downfall of the Jeremy Renner app), Pacheco publicly accused Renner of a series of violent behaviors toward her and their daughter.
According to ET, Renner allegedly repeatedly threatened to kill Pacheco and himself, even putting a gun in is mouth and then firing it into the ceiling one night while Ava slept. In court documents acquired by the outlet, Pacheco alleges that in a separate incident, a nanny overheard Renner say he was going to Pacheco’s house to kill her and then himself, because “it was better that Ava had no parents than to have her as a mother.”
The documents also claim Renner has an ongoing history of substance abuse and that he was under the influence around his daughter, in addition to having cocaine within her reach at his home.
Also in 2019, Pacheco accused Renner of biting a then-four-year-old Ava on the shoulder in 2017, as reported by Page Six. Court documents claim Ava told Pacheco, “Daddy bit me,” and that she said, “It’s OK Mommy, it was an accident. I told him to never do it again.” The documents also say that Ava “explained that the bite happened when [Renner] was being mean and yelling.”
Renner denied these allegations, stating that Ava was pinched by her seatbelt and that they would play “a nibble game called Ava burrito.” According to the docs, he laughed and added, “But not a bite. Tell her she’s spicy. And the game ensues. Haha. Nibble game are fake nibbles.”
These accusations are disturbing, to say the least. Pacheco has filed for sole custody of Ava and asked for Renner’s visits with their daughter to be supervised. Meanwhile, Renner has also filed for sole custody and requested monitored visits between Ava and Pacheco. At the time of this writing, the case has not been settled.
In 2020, Renner accused Pacheco of withdrawing $50,000 from Ava’s trust fund for herself, and in 2021, he told Men’s Health that he wouldn’t publicly address any of Pacheco’s claims (aside from calling them “nonsense”). “I don’t respond publicly or privately to nonsense,” he said. “It only empowers it … If you respond to it, you give it gas. I don’t fuel shit fires. I just don’t do it. I refuse to.”
