‘Unstoppable’ Review: Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez Bring Grit and Determination to Conventional but Crowd-Pleasing Sports Bio

Inspirational sports dramas usually share key elements — struggle, setbacks, perseverance and hard-fought triumph. Even more effective if the movie centers on a disadvantaged protagonist, either economically or physically, to inject that underdog spirit. Debuting director William Goldenberg has all of that in Unstoppable, the incredible true story of wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with only one leg but never let that stop him from going after his dream. The special sauce here, however, is the bond of love and support through tough times between Anthony and his mother Judy, stirringly portrayed by Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez.

Goldenberg is an Oscar-winning editor whose collaborations with lead producer Ben Affleck stretch from Gone Baby Gone through last year’s Air. The latter is an entertaining account of a pivotal moment in the evolution of Nike and there’s a pleasing continuum in the fact that Robles was the first sportsperson signed as a Nike Athlete after he had retired from competitive participation in his field. This moving portrait of him will open in select U.S. and U.K. theaters in December, streaming on Prime Video soon after.

    Unstoppable

    The Bottom Line

    Exerts a hold.

Venue: Toronto International Film Festival (Gala Presentations)
Cast: Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Anthony Robles, Mykelti Williamson, Don Cheadle, Jennifer Lopez, Shawn Hatosy, Johnni DiJulius
    Director: William Goldenberg
Screenwriters: Eric Champnella, Alex Harris, John Hindman

    Rated PG-13,
    1 hour 56 minutes

Unstoppable makes winking acknowledgement that it’s not trying to reinvent the formula. A strategically placed Rocky poster on the wall of the garage at home where Anthony works out is one tipoff; another is having him run on crutches up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps, placing his foot in the print of Rocky Balboa’s trainers, embedded in concrete at the top. It’s a potentially cheeseball moment that instead has an endearing effect, which is characteristic of a movie in which every tearjerking moment fully earns its emotions.

Adapting Robles’ 2012 book, screenwriters Eric Champnella, Alex Harris and John Hindman trace the wrestler’s trajectory from his senior year at Mesa High School in Arizona, when he became a national champion, through his quest, in his final year of eligibility, to win the National Collegiate Athletics Association championship, competing for Arizona State University.

It’s clear from the start that Anthony’s disability doesn’t earn him pity points and clearer still in the proud tenacity of Jerome’s performance that what he wants is exactly the opposite. He’s a young man with a firm goal in his head to become a champion as a way to make people see his achievements first, and not his missing right leg. He has staunch backup every step of the way from Lopez’s Judy, who never gives up on her son, even when she has her own volatile domestic life to manage.

Despite his impressive record in high school wrestling and all the major college scouts having witnessed him in winning form, Anthony gets turned down by his top choices, led by the University of Iowa, whose fabled Hawkeyes are considered titans in the sport. Both Judy and Anthony’s high school coach Bobby Williams (Michael Peña) urge him to accept the full four-year scholarship being offered by Philly’s Drexel University, in fact the only school that wants him. But strong-willed Anthony is hesitant given Drexel’s complete lack of any NCAA wrestling profile.

Out of respect for Williams, Coach Sean Charles (Don Cheadle) at Arizona State agrees to see Anthony. But he’s frank with the kid about ASU already having a full roster of recruits lined up to vie for the wrestling program’s 33 spots and says it’s highly unlikely Anthony would make the team as a walk on (a non-scholarship player). But Anthony is not easily deterred.

At home, Anthony’s father has long been out of the picture. He’s something of a hero to his four younger half-siblings, born after Judy got together with prison guard Rick (Bobby Cannavale). Anthony adores the kids but has a more contentious relationship with his stepfather, a blowhard whose authoritarian streak comes out when he’s banging on about the necessity of making choices in life. All Rick’s blustery “real man” talk is exposed as a sham when it’s revealed that he’s let down the family in a way that could cost them their home. And his treatment of Judy increasingly sets off alarm bells with Anthony.

Goldenberg and the writers deftly balance out the domestic drama with Anthony’s progress at ASU, where he works harder than anyone else in tryouts and shows formidable determination in an arduous three-mile mountain hike, his crutches slipping more than once on the uneven, rocky path. His endurance impresses Coach Charles, but it’s his strength of will on the mats that ultimately wins him a spot.

Robles, who’s now in his 30s, serves as a stunt double for the wrestling scenes in wide and medium shots, with Jerome spliced into the latter and taking over entirely in tight shots. The sports action is visceral and looks painfully real, the violent force of slams and flips likely causing many in the audience to flinch. (OK, I did.)

There are the requisite threats of the dream being snatched away from Anthony, notably when ASU cuts the wrestling program for a year and it’s reinstated thanks to alumni donations but with a reduced team. It’s at that point that the rousing support of Anthony’s teammates becomes evident and as he starts notching up wins, he becomes a favorite with the crowds.

The movie could be accused of aggressively going for the tear ducts when Coach Williams delivers a box stuffed with fan mail from kids inspired by Anthony’s example, encouraging Judy to read them and giving her credit for raising an exceptional young man. Some of Coach Charles’ dialogue toward the end of the film, acknowledging his failure to see Anthony’s capabilities, also spells out in emphatic terms a realization already apparent in the warmth and profound decency of Cheadle’s performance.

But any sense of emotional manipulation in the script is more than justified by the extraordinary human drama of Robles’ story. Alexandre Desplat’s lovely score — which ranges from Ry Cooder-esque guitars to soulful strings and surging piano passages — brings welcome restraint for this type of movie, perhaps knowing that Anthony’s authenticity can stand on its own, without the need for strenuous musical uplift.

The contrast between Rick’s overbearing presence and the stalwart support of both coaches is poignant, and both Peña and Cheadle nail the ways in which their characters’ profession requires them to be as much motivational psychologists as sports strategists.

The dominant relationship though is the mutually protective one between Anthony and his mother. After a couple of disposable Netflix movies in which she was basically playing JLo in the frozen wilderness and JLo in space, Lopez sinks into the character here with a layered performance as Judy, full of pain, pride, bitter disappointment in herself and then unexpected resilience and resourcefulness as she tackles the bank controlling their mortgage.

Some might argue that Judy initially looks a bit glam for a mother of five who clips coupons in a household that’s barely getting by. But Lopez gives a tender and entirely convincing performance as a mother whose unshakeable belief in her son is a crucial part of his foundations.

In his first lead role in a feature, Jerome — who memorably showed the conflicting sides of teenage Kevin, the love of Chiron’s life in Moonlight, and won an Emmy for Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us — is excellent. He gives the movie a fierce beating heart as a young man who remains vulnerable yet refuses to be defined by what others perceive as his weakness.

Given the rules of this biographical subgenre and the fact that the title itself is pretty much a spoiler, there’s no doubt about where the story is headed. But as Anthony obsessively watches videos of the undefeated wrestler destined to be his championship opponent — and winces at the macho arrogance of his coach (Shawn Hatosy), who says, “At Iowa, we believe second is the same as last” — it’s impossible not to root for this guy imbued with such extraordinary fighting spirit or to be moved by his unyielding fortitude.

Goldenberg fumbles a brief coda designed to show how Anthony’s achievements have been celebrated and continue to inspire, which seems both pedestrian and unnecessary. But that minor misstep takes nothing away from the rewards of Unstoppable.

Love don’t cost a thing, but making a movie does. Even though it would’ve been understandable if Jennifer Lopez wanted to stay out of the spotlight after her latest heartbreak, she put in work to promote her based-on-a-true-story sports drama Unstoppable at its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6. It was her first public appearance since she filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, who produced the film but did not attend the premiere. (He was photographed in Los Angeles earlier that day, with People reporting that he appeared to be on his way to work.) Several outlets declared that J.Lo’s sparkly, side-slit TIFF attire was a “revenge dress.” But regardless of what motives she might’ve had when sharing pics of her outfit on Instagram, Lopez made sure to mention Unstoppable in the captions of both posts.

She also posed on the red carpet for group photos, at one point standing just one Don Cheadle away from Affleck’s close friend and fellow Unstoppable producer Matt Damon. During part of a premiere conversation shared on social media by Peter Gray, she fielded questions about her character Judy, the mother of wrestler Anthony Robles — an NCAA champion who was born with one leg — and four other children. “When I read the script, I felt like so many women, including myself, could relate to the struggles she had gone through in life,” said Lopez, adding that the film is “a Latino story” and “so inspiring.” Judy was brought on stage during the event, and Lopez was filmed hugging her as the TIFF audience got to its feet and applauded after the screening. • Jennifer Lopez, Matt Damon (but No Ben Affleck) Bring Inspirational Sports Drama ‘Unstoppable’ to Toronto

Jennifer Lopez, Matt Damon (but No Ben Affleck) Bring Inspirational Sports Drama ‘Unstoppable’ to Toronto

Jenny from the Block made her way to the Six for the premiere of “Unstoppable,” a heartfelt sports drama that debuted on Friday at the Toronto Film Festival.

Jennifer Lopez, who stars as a fiercely supportive mother of five, worked on the film with her ex-husband Ben Affleck, whose production company Artists Equity served as producers. Affleck was absent from the festival (he and Lopez filed for divorce in August after less than two years of marriage), but his company co-founder and friend Matt Damon attended the premiere and walked the red carpet.

Despite the gloomy weather, swarms of fans gathered by the red carpet for a glimpse — and maybe even photo — of Lopez and her co-stars Jharrel Jerome, Don Cheadle and Bobby Cannavale.

“Unstoppable” stars Jerome (“Moonlight”) as a college wrestler who dreams of going professional. It’s based on the inspirational true story of Anthony Robles, who was born without a right leg and developed the strength and skills to meet the demands of Arizona State University’s wrestling team.

During the screening, audience members at the Roy Thomson Hall broke into applause several times and sniffled at more poignant moments in the film. All of the talent sat in the audience through the movie, though Cannavale ducked out midway through and returned with popcorn. As the end credits rolled, the real Robles was embraced with a two-minute standing ovation. During the applause, Cheadle waved to the crowd as Damon told the younger stars, “Great job, guys. Awesome.”

During a post-screening Q&A, Robles basked in the warm embrace and second standing ovation of the night.

“It’s still hitting me tonight,” he said. “I’m so proud. I couldn’t be any happier.”

Lopez, who also received a heartfelt greeting from the crowd, expressed a kinship with Anthony’s mother Judy Robles, who endures physical and mental hardships while supporting her son’s dreams.

“When I read the script I felt like so many woman including myself could relate to the struggles she’s gone through,” Lopez said. “The story being Latino was so inspiring. It grabbed me.”

Though Lopez has portrayed real people before, like in the biopic “Selena,” she wasn’t always able to connect to them to shape her performance. For “Unstoppable,” she appreciated getting to Zoom with Judy.

“This was a different experience,” Lopez added. “We were the same person in a way. The core and the heart of who we are — at first, we are moms.”

Judy Robles, who attended the premiere and participated in the Q&A, commended Lopez’s acting chops. She told her on-screen surrogate: “You were me — with the sass, but also the sadness and pain. Bobby, you scared me.”

“But in a funny way?” Cannavale, who plays her abusive husband, joked.

William Goldenberg, an Oscar winner who worked as an editor of Affleck’s films “Argo” and “Air,” directed “Unstoppable” in his feature debut. He said he was “blessed” to have Affleck and Damon as partners.

“They supported me and set me up for success. I appreciate everything they’ve done,” he said. “I worked with Ben for almost 20 years as an editor. His faith in me exceeded my faith in myself.”

How can TikTok fame lead to meaningful sources of income?

    There is no one recipe.

Finding resources to work as a creator full-time “is not as rare as it would have been years ago,” notes Erin Kristyniak, vice president of global partnerships at marketing collaboration company Partnerize. But you still have to make content that meets the moment — and there’s a lot to juggle if you want to monetize.

    Is it difficult to sustain?

Gaining traction in the macrocosm that is the internet is difficult as is — and while some have both tapped into trends that resonate and found sources of compensation that allow them to quit their nine-to-five, it still takes a lot of work to keep it going.

  • Jennifer Garner Is Clued Into What Really ‘Went Wrong’ Before Ben & J-Lo’s Divorce

Jennifer Garner Is Clued Into What Really ‘Went Wrong’ Before Ben & J-Lo’s Divorce

As reports continue to pour in about Bennifer’s split, eyes are turning to Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck‘s ex-wife and mother of his three children. Despite their own split nearly a decade ago, it seems Jennifer Garner’s reaction to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s divorce filing is proof of her continued support for her ex-husband during this challenging time.

A source close to the situation shared with Us Weekly that Affleck was leaning on Garner for support as his relationship with Lopez hit rocky terrain. “Ben has confided in Jen in a lot of ways,” the insider shared, adding, “Especially lately when things with J.Lo haven’t been so great in recent months.”

Related: Ben Was Reportedly at His ‘Breaking Point’ Over J-Lo & Jen Garner Felt ‘Responsible’

Affleck and Garner have maintained a positive relationship even after their own split in 2015. “Ben and Jennifer are friends, and they have a great coparenting relationship,” the insider revealed, referring to the former couple’s children: Violet, 18, Fin, 15, and Samuel, 12.

It’s no secret that co-parenting can be tricky, but Affleck and Garner appear to have cracked the code. The source explained that the pair have a “mutual understanding that their kids come first” and “also get along really well.” This dynamic has apparently fostered “a deep level of trust and respect between them.”

But don’t mistake Garner’s support for secret satisfaction. The source claims that Garner was actually rooting for Affleck and Lopez to work things out. “Jen was hopeful that things would work out between them but of course, she just wants them to be happy,” the insider shared. “So she supports whatever path they’ve decided to take.”

Affleck and Lopez tied the knot in July 2022, but their honeymoon phase seemed short-lived. By May 2024, reports surfaced that Affleck had moved out of their shared Beverly Hills home. The plot thickened in July when Lopez celebrated her birthday solo in the Hamptons, with Affleck noticeably absent. Their radio silence on what would’ve been their two-year wedding anniversary in July raised more eyebrows. The final blow came on August 20, 2024, when Lopez officially filed for divorce, citing April 26 as their separation date—revealing that their marriage had actually been on the rocks for months.

As for Garner’s own love life, she’s currently dating John Miller and seems content to keep her distance from the Bennifer drama. The source noted, “She is trying her best to stay out of their relationship in terms of what went wrong because she doesn’t feel like it’s any of her business.”

While the details of Affleck and Lopez’s split continue to emerge, it’s clear that Garner’s priority remains her children and maintaining a healthy co-parenting relationship with Affleck—and honestly, it’s refreshing to see these exes supporting each other through life’s ups and downs.

  • J-Lo Reportedly Has ‘Zero Guilt’ About Keeping Her Engagement Ring From Ben (Again)

J-Lo Reportedly Has ‘Zero Guilt’ About Keeping Her Engagement Ring From Ben (Again)

It seems Jennifer Lopez is holding onto a sparkly memento from her relationship with Ben Affleck. According to reports, the 55-year-old singer and actress has no plans to return her engagement ring from Ben, despite the couple’s recent split.

An insider told OK Magazine, “This isn’t the first time Jen has kept the bling.” They went on to explain that Lopez had previously held onto a 6.1-carat pink diamond ring worth $3.52 million after her first engagement to Affleck ended in 2004. Now, history appears to be repeating itself.

Related: Why Jennifer Lopez ‘Never Returned’ Her 1st Engagement Ring From Ben Affleck

“It was a gift,” the source added, explaining Lopez’s perspective on keeping the ring. “Just because the relationship didn’t work out doesn’t mean she has to give it back. Jennifer has zero guilt about keeping it, and clearly Ben doesn’t mind—he’s done this twice already!”

The news comes as Lopez officially filed for divorce on August 20, 2024, marking the end of their two-year marriage. Court documents obtained by TMZ reveal that Lopez submitted the paperwork without legal representation, listing their separation date as April 26, 2024.

Interestingly, engagement ring specialist Laura Taylor from Lorel Diamonds offered some insight into the situation. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Taylor explained, “In the United States, engagement rings are typically considered gifts, meaning J.Lo is legally entitled to keep the ring after the divorce unless agreed otherwise in a prenup.” While the divorce filing doesn’t confirm whether a prenuptial agreement exists, sources suggest there isn’t one in place.

The couple’s relationship has been a rollercoaster ride, with their initial engagement in 2002 ending in 2004. Both moved on, with Lopez marrying Marc Anthony later that year and Affleck tying the knot with Jennifer Garner in 2005.

Fast forward to April 2021, and rumors began swirling that Bennifer was back on following Lopez’s split from former MLB star Alex Rodriguez. The couple confirmed their rekindled romance by going Instagram official in July 2021. Their whirlwind reunion led to a second engagement in April 2022, followed by a surprise Las Vegas wedding on July 17, 2022. They celebrated with a larger ceremony in Georgia the following month, seeming to have found their happily ever after.

However, the fairy tale appears to have ended. In the months leading up to the divorce filing, the couple were often seen on opposite sides of the country. Lopez spent most of the summer in the Hamptons, whereas Affleck remained in Los Angeles, where he spent a few weeks moving out of their shared marital home.

Despite the split, both parties seem to be prioritizing their blended family. Lopez shares twins Max and Emme, 16, with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Affleck has three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner: Violet, 18, Fin, 15, and Samuel, 12. As a source told People, “She tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken. The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”

As the couple moves forward separately, with Affleck purchasing a new $20 million home in Los Angeles, it’s clear that this chapter of their love story has come to an end. However, it seems that Lopez will have a glittering reminder of their time together—for better or for worse.

  • 5 Famous Couples Who Didn’t Have a Prenup

5 Famous Couples Who Didn’t Have a Prenup

Can you believe it?! Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are getting a divorce.

Countless entertainment outlets were quick to report the not-so-shocking split. Some, like Variety, even published a sort of wistful piece on the celebrity couple being a modern-day Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. (Honestly, Variety isn’t wrong there.)

However, one of the most surprising details that has been reported about the end of Bennifer is that they reportedly didn’t have a prenuptial agreement. People notes that in the divorce filing by Lopez in Los Angeles County Superior Court, she doesn’t list if there was a prenup. TMZ reports a source confirmed that Ben and Jen didn’t have a prenup.

Additionally, the New York Post says, “Without a prenup, all their earnings, profits, and assets they made during their union are considered community property, and Lopez and Affleck, 52, have been busy since becoming newlyweds.” The outlet goes on to list the couple’s many earnings and acquired assets during their short marriage, from their $60 million home to their many acting projects.

Needless to say, Lopez and Affleck’s respective legal teams are going to be a lot to sort through, likely to the tune of many billable hours. If only they had learned from some other couples that came before them. Here are four other examples of famous couples who didn’t have a prenup.

    Jennifer Lopez & Cris Judd

Seriously, Jen? You didn’t learn your lesson?! Lopez and dancer/choreographer Cris Judd were only married for eight months before they headed to divorce court, which was tricky without a prenup. The divorce settlement reportedly included Judd receiving $14 million dollars and him signing documents stating he wouldn’t publicly talk about their marriage.

Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd arrive at the 74th Annual Academy Awards March 24, 2002 at The Kodak Theater in Hollywood, CA.

    Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore

Kutcher and Moore were married significantly longer than Lopez and Judd. The actors married in September 2005, separated in November 2011 and filed for divorce in December 2012. The divorce wasn’t settled until October 2013. Due to not having a prenup, the divorce process was significantly more complicated, with TMZ noting at the time Moore attempted to receive spousal support from Kutcher due to his alleged infidelity.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore attend the ”Half The Sky” book party sponsored by Reader’s Digest and C.A.R.E. at Moura Starr New York on September 23, 2009 in New York City.

    Paul McCartney & Heather Mills

McCartney and Mills were married in 2002, separated in 2006 and settled their divorce in 2008. Despite Sir Paul’s massive wealth, the couple didn’t have a prenup. As expected, the financials got very messy. Per Rolling Stone, Mills originally sought $250 million from McCartney in the divorce settlement. She ended up receiving $48.7 million. McCartney was also on the hook for $70,000/year in alimony for their daughter, Beatrice Milly, plus school and nanny fees.

Sir Paul McCartney and his fiance model Heather Mills signals to the news media at Castle Leslie June 10, 2002 in Glaslough Village, County Monaghan, Ireland. The pair will be married on the castle grounds June 11, 2002.

    MacKenzie Scott & Jeff Bezos

Scott and Bezos married in 1993. In 1994, Bezos founded Amazon, and Scott was a key part of the company’s early days. Little did they know that Amazon would become a giant, so when the couple divorced in 2019, a lot of money was up for grabs. At the end of it all, Scott received $38.3 billion in Amazon stock and a 4% stake in the online retail giant. Since then, Scott has given away billions of her wealth to various philanthropic causes. A complete listing of gifts can be found at YieldGiving.com.

Jennifer Lopez files for divorce from Ben Affleck after 2 years of marriage – National | Globalnews.ca

More than two years after their secretive Las Vegas wedding, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have called it quits on their decades-long love story.

Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to legal documents.

TMZ was first to report news of the celebrity couple’s divorce. The outlet claimed Affleck and Lopez do not have a prenuptial agreement in place.

The Let’s Get Loud singer listed April 26, 2024, as the date of her separation from Affleck. Lopez and Affleck, nicknamed “Bennifer” in the tabloids, married in July 2022.

They tied the knot in a drive-thru chapel ceremony in Las Vegas.

Lopez, who legally changed her last name to Affleck after becoming married, detailed the day’s events in her newsletter, On the J Lo. She told fans that she, Affleck and her two children flew to Vegas to obtain the couple’s marriage licence. They were wed later that night at the Little White Chapel, in the “tunnel of love” drive-thru.

Lopez and Affleck would also go on to also host a more traditional wedding ceremony in Georgia at Affleck’s 87-acre compound outside Savannah on Aug. 20, 2022, which, coincidentally, is the same date Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck two years later.

In July, amid rumours of an impending divorce, Lopez and Affleck put the Beverly Hills mansion they purchased together up for sale. The couple bought the sprawling 5.2-acre property together in May 2023 for US$60.8 million (C$82.6 million).

    The Agency

The star’s nuptials came after they rekindled their flame from the early 2000s, when the former famous “it” couple were consistently on the cover of tabloids. Lopez and Affleck met in 2002 on the movie set of notorious flop Gigli.

Later that year, Affleck popped the question, though he and Lopez would call it quits in 2004 before exchanging vows.

They reunited in 2021, after Lopez’s split from Alex Rodriguez that same year. Lopez and Rodriguez were engaged but never said “I do” at the altar.

Affleck has been married once before to actor Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three children. The couple divorced in October 2018.

Lopez has been married four times. Before Affleck, she was married to Cuban actor and producer Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998. She then married dancer Cris Judd in 2001, and the couple were together for two years. In 2004, Lopez married singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares two children. Lopez and Anthony divorced in 2014.

More Details On Jennifer Lopez Filing For Divorce From Ben Affleck

According to TMZ, Lopez officially filed the documents in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Furthermore, the outlet noted that unlike most filings — usually made on the client’s behalf by an attorney — Lopez did this one herself.

To raise eyebrows even further, the outlet notes that Lopez’s filing today arrives on the second anniversary of her and Ben’s second wedding ceremony. Page Six notes that the pair initially eloped in Las Vegas in July 2022. However, on August 20, 2022, the pair officially tied the knot with a wedding ceremony in Georgia.

Furthermore, per TMZ, Lopez has reportedly listed her and Affleck’s date of separation as April 26, 2024. Additionally, the singer’s documents reportedly do not state whether she and Affleck have a prenuptial agreement. Sources have reportedly informed the outlet that there is none in place.

“That would mean whatever earnings, or profit, Ben and Jen made during their nearly 2 years of marriage is community property,” the outlet states.

Lastly, TMZ notes that Lopez has reportedly waived her interest in spousal support and is allegedly asking a judge “to deny Ben such support as well.”

    Social Media Reacts

Social media users have reacted to Lopez’s divorce filing in The Shade Room’s comment section. To note, this marks the nearing end of the singer’s fourth marriage and Affleck’s second.

Instagram user @ms_nicoleeee wrote, I’ve had a bag of cereal that’s lasted longer than her marriages”

While Instagram user @lifeluxejay added, I think she falls in love with the idea of being in love because damn 😩”

Instagram user @mrs_jamesjonesz wrote, 🫠🫠🫠 Ben been looking fed up for a good minute.”

While Instagram user @omarwinning added, Just be single sis. We tired.”

Instagram user @legallyvonn wrote, I know a divorce lawyer hate to see her coming”

Here’s What’s Recently Been Reported About The Pair

As The Shade Room previously reported, Lopez announced her engagement to Affleck in April 2022. The pair had reportedly rekindled their romance the year earlier after dating and even getting engaged in the early 2000s.

Then, in July of that year, J. Lo confirmed that she and Affleck walked down the aisle in a Las Vegas ceremony, per The Shade Room.

“We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” she wrote in a newsletter reportedly sent to her fans at the time.

Fast forward, to earlier this year, reports surfaced that Lopez and her husband were living separately, per The Shade Room. However, in May, the pair were spotted together and this appeared to quell speculation about their impending split.

Later that month, Lopez even went viral for checking a reporter who asked about her and Affleck possibly separating, per The Shade Room.

It Seems J-Lo Had Other Plans on Ben Affleck’s Birthday

Weeks after he skipped her Bridgerton-themed bash, it seems Jennifer Lopez‘s plans on Ben Affleck‘s 52nd birthday proved that two could play at that game. The Atlas actress decided to sit out her husband’s birthday celebrations in favor of a night out at a Bruno Mars concert.

Related: A full timeline of the Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck’s divorce rumors

While Affleck was presumably blowing out candles somewhere (or perhaps just sighing heavily), Lopez was spotting living it up at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The “Jenny from the Block” singer, 55, traded birthday celebrations with the Argo director for a night of star-studded fun at the venue’s opening night.

Decked out in a white crop top, massive sunglasses, and enough bling to light up the arena (including a not-so-subtle “Jennifer” necklace in lieu of her “Ben” necklace), J-Lo was seen giggling with Ashton Kutcher and grooving to performances by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. Oh, and in case you’re wondering—yes, her wedding ring was still firmly in place. She even took to her Instagram Story to post photos and videos from her outing, captioning one flick, “About Last Night.”

But before we start pointing fingers, let’s not forget that Ben was MIA at J-Lo’s own birthday bash last month—so it’s not a huge surprise that the This Is Me Now actress decided to do the same.

Rumors about the couple’s alleged impending divorce have been working overtime lately. Back in May, reports confirmed that Affleck had packed his bags and moved out of their shared home in Beverly Hills. Since then, it’s been a roller coaster of on-again, off-again sightings. One day they’re out and about, wedding rings conspicuously absent; the next, they’re flashing their rings like nothing’s amiss. They’re spending holidays (and evidently, birthdays) apart, then suddenly they’re playing happy families with each other’s kids.

Adding another layer to this confusing cake, People reports that Lopez made a pit stop at Affleck’s place just days before his birthday. A few weeks earlier, a source told another outlet that things weren’t looking good for the pair, sharing that they “don’t have a lot of common ground, and the honeymoon phase has worn off.”

Another insider added, “In a perfect world, Jen would like to make it work with Ben. It’s heartbreaking to her and she tried very hard to make it work.”

Apparently, if things do go south, these two are determined to keep it classy. “Behind the scenes they have been finalizing what that will look like if they pull the trigger,” a third source told Us Weekly. “Their main goal is to remain amicable.”

They briefly revived their romance in 2015, but their renewed relationship was short-lived, underscoring their bond. Just over a year after getting back together, they ended things once more, leaving fans and the media speculating about the future of their relationship.

  • When Unoriginal Rips From Unoriginal: Paris Hilton Is Very Much “Waiting For Tonight” in Her Remake of Ultra Naté’s “Free”

When Unoriginal Rips From Unoriginal: Paris Hilton Is Very Much “Waiting For Tonight” in Her Remake of Ultra Naté’s “Free”

Right after the backlash against Jennifer Lopez that began in early summer—amid news that she was canceling her tour (she said for “family reasons,” everyone else said “low ticket sales”) —Galore posted a series of photos that tried to connect Charli XCX’s Brat to J. Lo’s music and videos of the past. The reaction to a question like, “Is Brat Actually J. Lo Coded?” was met, rightly so, with comments like, “How much she paid y’all to post this?,” “No. Next question,” “She wishes,” “How dare you do this to Charli,” “Stop trying to make J. Lo happen,” “This has to be rage bait” and “April Fool’s was two months ago.”

While that “comparison” was more than a bit of a reach, the connection Hilton has to Lopez in her latest video, “I’m Free” is hard to deny. Mainly because those green lasers are a staple of the “Waiting For Tonight” video. And everyone still knows it. While Lopez herself might have lifted them from the clubs they were popular in at the time, this is the image—apart from her plunging Versace dress—that she is arguably most remembered for. What Madonna did for vogueing, J. Lo did for green laser lights, bringing them to the forefront of mainstream consciousness as never before.

More obviously, Hilton is doing her “take” on Ultra Naté’s 1997 club banger, “Free,” a track she’s long been known to play in her go-to DJing rotation. And yes, it’s bittersweetly ironic that the song was released just a few months before she would be sent away by her parents to Provo Canyon School, that oppressive institution where she was force-fed dubious “medication” and abused in ways both physical and emotional. Fortunately though, Hilton claims she didn’t actually hear the song for the first time until she was back in New York, commenting in her “I’m Free” “press release,” “I heard it for the first time at a club in New York City shortly after being released from the Provo Canyon School where I experienced mental and physical abuse. For me, the song represents the journey of healing and finding your voice. It has served as an anthem of hope and a guiding light and I’m honored to have had the chance to create this new version.” Well, it doesn’t sound all that new, and, obviously, it doesn’t even begin to hold a candle to Ultra Naté’s original. Which also has an accompanying video that likely hits too close to home for Hilton’s experience at Provo Canyon when Ultra Naté’s appears in a skin-tight metallic gown that’s also fashioned as a straitjacket (“back then,” one could make such “ableist” commentary without risk of being lambasted).

While “Free” burned up the dance charts, Hilton, alas, was stuck in “hell camp” from the summer of ’97 to January of ’99, let out a month before her eighteenth birthday. As Hilton tells it, “The only thing that saved my sanity was thinking about what I wanted to do and who I wanted to become when I got out of there. I was gonna do everything in my power to be so successful that my parents could never control me again… I just wanted to be independent.”

So yes, obviously, “Free” would have some special significance to her as an anthem. Even though, if one is being honest, it was never much of an “uncertainty” that Hilton would be successful and independent. For, even if she says she didn’t use the financial resources at hand after turning eighteen, she still had the name and the according “it” girl status to “make something happen” for herself. Which she did once she was “released.” The same year that “Waiting For Tonight” would come out, specifically on September 7th, nine months after Hilton had been given the chance to reinvent herself as New York’s premier party girl. A rebirth, as it were (even though she was already a party girl before she was sent away—hell, that’s why she was sent away). Not so coincidentally, nine months is how long it takes to give birth. And in place of the “old” “caterpillar in the chrysalis” Paris was the “butterfly” one being photographed by David LaChapelle for Vanity Fair. It was that 2000 photoshoot that launched her image for the twenty-first century. A “rich bitch” flipping off the camera in her grandma’s mansion while simultaneously insisting, “People think I’m just this party girl. Well, I’m not like that.”

In the article that accompanied it, it would become retroactively unflattering (even more so, that is) to note that, “[Conrad Hilton was] a Trumpian figure, he palled around with celebrities…and went dancing with assorted L.A. showgirls.” Fittingly, Paris had signed with Trump’s (ugh) modeling agency the same year this article came out. A modeling agency that managed to stay afloat all the way until 2017, when it was closed solely because Trump had become “president.” And yes, it’s no secret that the Hiltons were longtime family friends of the Trumps, though it’s a piece of information that Paris’ “rebrand” has helped to mitigate. Even though, as recently as 2017, she was saying shit like, “I think that [Trump’s #MeToo accusers] are just trying to get attention and get fame. I feel like, a lot of people, when something happens all these opportunists will come out. They want to get money or get paid to not say anything or get a settlement when nothing really happened. So I don’t believe any of that. And I’m sure that they were trying to be with him too. Because a lot of women, I’ve seen, like him because he’s wealthy and he’s charming and good-looking so I feel like a lot of these girls just made the story up. I didn’t really pay attention to it. I heard a couple things about it. I don’t believe it.”

Just as she doesn’t want people to believe what they’ve seen of her own Trumpian behavior in the past (i.e., the free-wheeling racism and homophobia she would later attribute to being “traumatized”). What’s more, both the Hilton and Trump families are, as Nancy Jo Sayles put it in the aforementioned “Hip-Hop Debs” article, “forever plagued by a crisp taint of new money.” They might be “free” to do what they like, but it doesn’t mean what they do is “classy.” Luckily (in some ways) for Paris, Kim Kardashian came along to epitomize “new money” in an even worse way. Yet because Kardashian became the new “queen bee,” Hilton would end up copping some of her style too in order to remain relevant(ish). It is, indeed, Kardashian’s long hair extensions look that Paris emulates in the “I’m Free” video, using the retro gimmick of a wind machine (a.k.a. industrial fan) to make her hair billow as she basks in the glow of those green laser lights. The ones Lopez approved for her Francis Lawrence-directed masterpiece (on a side note: Lawrence would also go on to direct such Britney Spears masterpieces as “I’m A Slave 4 U” and “Circus”).

And yes, “Waiting For Tonight” has the same house-influenced sound that Hilton is grafting for the present as a result of having no original ideas of her own. Though she has the gall to deliver the outro, “I am the blueprint/The real OG/This is my legacy.” One, evidently, that looks a lot like Lopez’s. Hence, not only is the song not written by Paris (in part because it’s a remake)—with credits going to Rina Sawayama, Naliya, John-Adam Howard, Pierre Blondo, Ultra Naté, Lem Springsteen and John Ciafone—but its visual concept is also lacking in much substance. At least in “Waiting For Tonight,” there was more to it than just green lasers, with a narrative centered around a “Millennium Party” (or, what one might have then preferred to call an “End of the World Party”) on New Year’s Eve. One that takes place in an underground jungle club that looks like somewhere Hilton might have attended in her aughts glory days. To honor that “Y2K” concept, there’s even a “gasp!” moment when the computerized counter for the new year briefly seems to glitch and cause a power outage. But, of course, it’s just a false alarm and everyone quickly gets back to partying even harder (though, sadly, no longer partying like it’s 1999).

In another moment, Hilton also channels Lopez in “Waiting For Tonight” (as well as some brief glimpses of certain scenes in Lopez’s video for “Play”) by bedecking her entire body in glitter. The same goes for Lopez in a similar “nude” scene (though of course, unlike Paris, she’s actually wearing a top). Except that Paris uses this moment as yet another in the pile of meaningless scenes she’s showing us for this “video,” which is conceptless (a common trend at present) apart from her languidly bopping around and engaging in some non-choreo. But, like she says, she’s “free to do what she wants to do.” As if that were ever really something that was in question apart from a brief blip that ended in 1999. The year J. Lo would rise to prominence as much as Hilton, with the former releasing her debut album, On the 6. Funnily enough, Hilton would make her DJ debut at 2012’s Pop Music Festival in São Paulo, with J. Lo headlining the concert. It seems, then, that Hilton culling her inspiration from someone almost as subpar and lacking in original ideas is not as much of a reach as calling Brat “J. Lo coded.”

  • Jennifer Lopez’s cryptic message amid Ben Affleck marital woes speaks volumes

Jennifer Lopez’s cryptic message amid Ben Affleck marital woes speaks volumes

Jennifer Lopez once declared she “Ain’t Your Mama”, but it turns out she’s singing a different tune.

The Grammy-nominated superstar sent a clear message to the world this week when she stepped out in New York City wearing an extremely cropped top with the bold words “JLO BE MY MAMA” emblazoned across her chest.

At 54, Jennifer proved she’s still got it, flaunting her rock-hard abs in the barely-there shirt, which she paired with a chic pink cardigan and trendy low-rise dirty baggy jeans by Acne Studios. Her look was completed with a pair of pristine white sneakers and a luxurious Dioriviera Lady Dior Bag.

This sighting comes on the heels of Jennifer’s latest promotional campaign for J. Lo Beauty, where she posed without her wedding ring, sparking speculation about her marriage to Ben Affleck.

Despite being ring-free in the clip, Jennifer did wear her wedding ring for the Coach marketing images shared over the weekend, leaving fans puzzled about the timeline of the photos.

According to Page Six, rumors have been swirling that Jennifer and Ben’s marriage has been on the rocks for months.

The couple, who tied the knot in a surprise Las Vegas ceremony in July 2022 and celebrated with a lavish reception at Ben’s Georgia estate in August, have reportedly been selling pieces from their art collection and put their $60 million estate on the market.

Ben, 51, has reportedly moved his belongings out of their shared home and into a rental property in Brentwood, California, to be closer to his children.

Speculation about trouble in paradise arose when Jennifer and Ben went nearly two months without being photographed together.

However, they quelled some of the rumors by reuniting on May 16 to watch Ben’s 15-year-old child, Fin Affleck, perform in a school play in Los Angeles. They have been seen together several times since, putting on a united front.

Jennifer has been relatively quiet about the speculation surrounding her marriage, but she faced questions while promoting her Netflix movie Atlas in Mexico City on May 22.

During a press event, sitting alongside her co-star Simu Liu, Jennifer was asked directly by a reporter, “Is your divorce with Ben Affleck real? These rumors? What is the truth?”

Simu quickly jumped to her defense, saying, “We’re not doing that. Thank you so much, guys.”

Jennifer laughed off the question, but when the reporter persisted, she looked directly at him and said, “You know better than that.” Simu added, “Don’t come in with that energy, please.”

Simu isn’t the only Atlas co-star to support Jennifer. Sterling K. Brown also spoke out, insisting that Jennifer and Ben were “very much in love” while he helped her run lines for the movie.

“Every once in a while, Ben would read the lines for Smith,” Sterling said, referring to a character in the film. “I think the newlyweds — still very much in love — I think she just wanted to hear his voice. And so sometimes, the reactions that you got from her were because she was listening to her husband’s voice.”

Jennifer, always the consummate professional, has continued to focus on her career amidst the rumors. She remains a force in the entertainment industry, with her recent work in Atlas showcasing her versatility and dedication.

The film, set to be a major Netflix hit, features Jennifer in a thrilling new role, and her co-stars have nothing but praise for her performance and work ethic. Outside of her professional life, Jennifer continues to be a devoted mother. She shares 15-year-old twins, Emme and Max, with her ex-husband Marc Anthony, and has been seen spending quality time with them despite her busy schedule.

  • The Moment Ben & J-Lo’s Marriage Fell Apart, Revealed

The Moment Ben & J-Lo’s Marriage Fell Apart, Revealed

As rumors continue to swirl about the state of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck‘s marriage, we’re hearing more about the pivotal moment that may have sparked the beginning of the end for their relationship. According to an insider who spoke with In Touch, it all started with the making of J-Lo’s recent documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told.

The documentary, which premiered on Prime Video back in February 2024, was apparently “a real eye-opener for them,” the source explained. There was one scene in particular that stood out, where Affleck is talking about the creation of Lopez’s recent album, This Is Me…Now. Speaking directly to the camera crew, he reveals how he reacted after he learned that Lopez shared all of the love letters he’d written to her with her songwriters: “Things that are private I had always felt are sacred and special in part because they’re private,” he said. “So, this was something of an adjustment for me.”

In the doc, Lopez acknowledged how difficult it was for Affleck to put their relationship in the spotlight. “I don’t think he’s very comfortable with me doing all of this,” she admitted. “But he loves me, he knows I’m an artist, and he’s gonna support me in every way he can because he knows he can’t stop me.” And while it’s true that Affleck didn’t stop her from doing her thing, In Touch’s source believes that their dynamic changed after that moment.

“They both sat back and looked at how different they really are,” the insider explained. “While Jennifer loves being the center of attention, Ben would rather live his life away from the spotlight. At the end of the day, they both just want different things out of life.”

But how did Bennifer get here? After all, they’ve already been through the wringer together. As followers of their romance know, the pair first fell for each other over two decades ago. They met on the set of the romantic comedy Gigli in 2001, and by 2002, they were engaged. Affleck proposed to Lopez with a stunning 6.1-carat pink diamond ring. The pair planned their nuptials, but constant tabloid attention and interest in their relationship led the pair to postpone their wedding before eventually calling it off altogether in 2003.

In the years following their initial split, both Affleck and Lopez moved on and started families of their own. Affleck married actress Jennifer Garner in June 2005, and the pair went on to welcome three children together: Violet, born in 2005, Seraphina, born in 2009, and Samuel, born in 2012. On the other hand, Lopez married singer Marc Anthony in June 2004. They welcomed twins, a son named Maximilian and a daughter named Emme, in February 2008. Lopez and Anthony divorced in June 2014, while Affleck and Garner announced their separation in June 2015 and finalized their divorce in October 2018.

It wasn’t long before Bennifer rekindled their romance. The pair reconnected in April 2021 and didn’t waste any time. They surprised fans with a second engagement in April 2022, followed by a spontaneous wedding at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas in July 2022. J. Lo celebrated the occasion in her newsletter, On the J-Lo, writing, “We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient.”

However, as recent reports suggest, cracks may be appearing in their fairytale ending. For now, it seems Bennifer’s storybook romance is facing its most challenging chapter yet.

  • Jennifer Garner ‘Doesn’t Like’ Ben Affleck & J-Lo’s Drama Affecting Their Kids

Jennifer Garner ‘Doesn’t Like’ Ben Affleck & J-Lo’s Drama Affecting Their Kids

All things considered, Jennifer Garner’s response to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s divorce rumors has been pretty supportive of the pair—but now, some sources are now saying that she’s drawing a line when it comes to their relationship drama affecting their kids.

A close source recently revealed to Fox News Digital that Garner wasn’t expecting Affleck to rekindle his relationship with Lopez—or all the media attention that comes with it. “Jennifer Garner felt blindsided by Ben’s relationship with JLo,” the source said. “She doesn’t like her kids in the public eye so much, and that’s been hard for her.”

Garner and Affleck share three children—Violet, 18, Seraphina (who might be going by Fin now), 15, and Samuel, 12. Garner has always been super protective of their privacy. But ever since Affleck and Lopez’s high-profile marriage, it’s been paparazzi galore, and apparently, Garner’s not having it. “She doesn’t like the constant attention around her kids because of Jennifer Lopez’s fame,” another source added.

It’s not just the flashing cameras and headlines, though. There’s also been a lot of speculation about the state of Ben and J-Lo’s marriage, and it’s weighing on Garner, too. InTouch Weekly was the first to report claims about Bennifer’s relationship being on the rocks. According to an insider, “The writing is on the wall—it’s over. They’re headed for a divorce—and for once, [Ben’s] not to blame!” The source went on to say Ben is focusing on his work and kids now, implying he had already moved out and the couple was thinking of selling their dream house.

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 13: (L-R) Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez attend the Los Angeles premiere of Amazon MGM Studios

But before you start feeling too sorry for Bennifer, Us Weekly painted a different picture. A source told them that while Affleck and Lopez are having some issues, they’re not divorcing. Instead, the insider suggested that they’ve had some arguments, mostly because J-Lo’s been ramping up her work commitments and prepping for her tour. “Jen is very focused on work. They are on two completely different pages most of the time,” the insider shared. Still, three different sources confirmed they’re working on resolving their problems, so maybe there’s hope yet.

Affleck and Lopez’s love story dates back to 2001 when they met on the set of Gigli. They first got engaged in 2002 but called it off before the wedding in 2003. Fast forward to 2022, they rekindled their romance and got married in July of the same year. Reflecting on their journey, Lopez shared in her newsletter, “We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient.”

For Garner, though, the last few years have been a rough ride. She’s always been a champion for her kids’ privacy, even advocating for laws to protect children from invasive paparazzi. Back in 2013, she supported a California bill imposing stricter penalties on photographers who harass celebrity kids. It’s clear she’s serious about keeping her kids out of the spotlight. But with all this media chaos, it’s no wonder the mother of three is worried. It’s a tough balance, especially with the relentless curiosity about Lopez and Affleck’s blended family.

Hopefully, things calm down soon and the kids can enjoy a bit more privacy. After all, growing up is already tricky enough—let alone trying to do it with two A-list parents and a stepmom who’s a global superstar.

  • Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are Selling Their $60 Million Family Home

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are Selling Their $60 Million Family Home

The stress of moving has destroyed many a marriage, or so common knowledge would have us believe. Does that cliche apply when the couple in question is Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, who presumably have folks on hand to help with life’s most mundane chores? But with speculation running wild that Lopez and Affleck’s less-than-two-years-old marriage is over, news that the couple is selling their shared Beverly Hills home feels stressful, indeed.

Public sightings of the newlyweds sharply declined since the February release of The Greatest Love Story Never Told, a documentary ostensibly about the making of Lopez’s self-funded, Affleck-inflected visual album This Is Me… Now. Affleck and Lopez’s relationship is heavily featured in the doc, including Affleck’s discomfort that their real-life romance was mined for This Is Me.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are seen out and about on March 30, 2024, in New York, New York.

    MEGA

“I did really find the beauty and the poetry and the irony in the fact that it’s the greatest love story never told,” he says at one point in the documentary. “And if you’re making a record about it, that seems kind of like telling it.”

Those seeking a reason for a rift are probably mulling Affleck’s other comments in the doc, such as “Things that are private, I’d always felt were sacred and special—because, in part, they’re private. So that was a bit of an adjustment for me.” And a scene in which the two discuss their reconciliation after a breakup in 2004 feels especially prescient.

“Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media,” Affleck says he told Lopez. “I sort of realized it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like, you’re going to marry a boat captain, and [you’re like], ‘Well, I don’t like the water.’”

It is perhaps admirable for an aquaphobic to throw those fears to the wind to be with their beloved captain, but in the real world, it’s rarely that simple. That, along with incidents like that viral door slam from over a year ago, has prompted people to speculate from the beginning that their marriage might be on borrowed time. (Representatives for Affleck and Lopez have not responded to Vanity Fair’s request for comment.)

That’s also why a TMZ report that Affleck and Lopez hired Buying Beverly Hills Santiago Arana to sell the $60 million Beverly Hills home the couple moved into just last year feels especially significant. According to the outlet, Arana has been showing the 12 bedroom/24 bath home for about two weeks, but no buyers have emerged for the property, which reportedly boasts an asking price of $65 million.

The real estate deal isn’t the only disruption in Lopez’s life in recent weeks, as earlier this month, the polymath also canceled her ambitious national stadium tour. According to a statement posted to Lopez’s website, the concert series—which struggled with slow ticket sales—was iced so Lopez could “be with her children, family and close friends.”

  • The Never-Ending Trolling of Jennifer Lopez Is Deeply Rooted in Misogyny

The Never-Ending Trolling of Jennifer Lopez Is Deeply Rooted in Misogyny

Jennifer Lopez‘s illustrious career in music and film has once again taken a backseat to her love life. Despite her blockbuster hits, platinum-selling albums, sold-out tours, and a Las Vegas residency, the Latina megastar continues to be chastised about her romantic relationships. Front and center today is her marriage to Ben Affleck, with various opinions and rumors swirling on social media. But all the chatter points to one thing: blatant misogyny from internet trolls and the media that places the blame on Lopez for her failed relationships. From the divorce rumors to the cancellation of her tour, Lopez is being kicked while she’s down, and the public seems thirsty for it.

Today’s headlines paint a one-sided picture of Affleck navigating a tumultuous marriage to an overly ambitious, workaholic diva who can’t seem to get love right. These biased narratives seem to be one reason why Lopez released her film “This Is Me…Now” and its accompanying album by the same name, as well as the documentary that shows the behind-the-scenes of it all, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.” Still, she can’t seem to break through the noise, the trolling, and the harassment bestowed upon her.

On June 5, Lopez addressed the situation to fans via her On The JLo newsletter, where she wrote: “It may seem like there’s a lot of negativity out in the world right now . . . but don’t let the voices of a few drown out that there is soooo much love out there. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I love you all so much.”

Let’s be clear: Lopez is being put through the wringer about her love life for two reasons. First off, she’s a woman — a powerful woman at that — and the second reason is because she’s Latina. The machismo culture is toxic and exists widely throughout Latin America and here in the United States. One 2022 study found higher rates of sexism among Latinos in the US and concluded that the reinforcement of the machismo narrative in the media is a misleading reproduction of harmful stereotypes against Latines. In other words, when the Latine community jumps to bashing J Lo, it leaves the door wide open for anyone else to join the bandwagon, forgetting that behind the hate is a woman, a mother, and someone who has never denied how much she loves love.

When gossip about her relationships prevails, it obscures Lopez’s triumphant success story. Lopez was able to obtain the American dream ten-fold. Still, instead of being continuously celebrated for this, all the attention is focused on things going awry in her love life. The public discourse always seems to harp on what she did wrong. Maybe she didn’t pay enough attention to her man, or her career demands strained their relationship. Or maybe her global fame was overshadowing poor, poor Ben. Let’s be real: if Lopez were a man, Latine or not, would this still be the case?

It’s not just Lopez. Take legendary actress and EGOT Rita Moreno, a Puerto Rican actress who was married to Leonard Gordon for 45 years until his death in 2010. But before that, Moreno was scrutinized for her love affairs with Hollywood royalty like Marlon Brando and music superstars like Elvis Presley.

So, what are we telling little girls, Latine and otherwise, about being ambitious and successful? It’s similar to America Ferrera’s speech in “Barbie.” A woman can be successful but not too successful. She can shine like the brightest star as long as she isn’t blinding him or leaving him in the shadows. She can be strong but not appear stronger than her man in public. She can love herself, but not too much, because it will appear like diva-ish, self-centered behavior.

The greatest love story Lopez never told is how much she has had to love herself through very public relationships and the breakups everyone seems to be waiting for. After all, how could a woman choose her career over love, right?
