    Police said Norma Little was found inside her home on the 2300 block of Dulles Station Boulevard in McNair on Tuesday. When police arrived, they found Little, 79, with stab bounds to her upper body, a police news release said. She declared dead at the scene.

    After conducting interviews, reviewing video surveillance and other evidence, police arrested Helena Little, 31, of Herndon, on Thursday. Helena Little has been charged with second-degree murder. She’s being held without bond at the Fairfax County jail.

    Cardinal Robert McElroy, the eighth Archbishop of Washington, has been diagnosed with liposarcoma, and he will have the cancer surgically removed on Nov. 13, the Archdiocese of Washington said in an update on its website Wednesday.

    The statement said that McElroy’s prognosis is good, as the cancer is nonaggressive and tends not to metastasize.

    “I am at peace with this challenge and hope and believe that in God’s grace I will be Archbishop of Washington for many years to come,” the 71-year old said in a statement. “I ask your prayers and support in these days and plan to resume full duties two weeks after the surgery.”

    McElroy was appointed to the Archdiocese of Washington, which includes D.C. and several Maryland counties, by Pope Francis in January. He became a cardinal in 2022.

    In 2010, McElroy was appointed as an auxiliary bishop in San Francisco by Pope Benedict XVI, and in 2015 he became the sixth bishop of the Archdiocese of San Diego.

    He was born in San Francisco, and attended Harvard College in 1972. He obtained a masters in divinity at St. Patrick Seminary in 1979.

    If you own a rewards card to a department store or coffee shop, you might not be getting as many deals and freebies as you think.

    If you own a rewards card to a department store or coffee shop, you might not be getting as many deals and freebies as you think.

    Retail loyalty cards which offer points, promotions, and freebies from stores such as Starbucks, Best Buy or GameStop can track your spending habits and find ways to charge you more, according to a recent exploration by Washington Post reporter Geoffrey Fowler.

    Utilizing California’s consumer privacy law, which allows users to obtain access to their data from companies as well as request their information to be deleted or not sold, Fowler took a look at the information Starbucks had on him from his loyalty card.

    Fowler told WTOP that the request revealed the coffee giant had information on all of his purchases and where he made them, building a dossier of his spending habits and building a profile of him.

    “Starbucks was trying to start a dossier on me and size me up, and ultimately figure out how much I would pay,” Fowler said.

    It even counted how often he opened the app.

    “It said one day last March, I tapped on the app more than 90 times,” Fowler said.

    Fowler discovered that Starbucks was also selling his information to data brokers and that he was rewarded less, even though he spent at Starbucks more often.

    “They call it personalized discounts. You might call it personalized ‘jacked up prices,’” he said.

    Fowler said it’s called “surveillance pricing,” where a company figures out what you are willing to pay and charges you exactly that, noting customers who use a company’s loyalty card or app less often are targeted with more deals to entice them back.

    “The opposite of what you thought was supposed to happen with a reward card was happening,” Fowler said.

    Maryland will provide free MARC train and Commuter Bus service to federal workers for the duration of the government shutdown, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has announced.

    Anyone with a federal ID badge can ride for free by showing their badge to the operator.

    The governor made the announcement Friday while at a resource fair in Howard County, where state and local agencies were administering resources for federal workers.

    “This is what Maryland does in times of crisis: We band together and we help each other out,” Gov. Moore said in a statement. “But while Maryland is mobilizing to ease the shutdown’s burden on our people, let’s be clear, no state can fill the gap created by the federal government.”

    The federal government is the largest employer in the state, which lost over 15,000 jobs since President Donald Trump’s administration took office in January.

    In 2019, Trump’s partial shutdown cost Marylanders about $778 million in wages.

    “Since day one of this shutdown, Maryland lawmakers across the federal, state, and local delegations have stood united in the fight to protect all Marylanders,” said Rep. Sarah Elfreth.

  • Steady rain, humid warmth in store for DC region Saturday – WTOP News

    The weekend promises sunshine and seasonable warmth, but the region will have to contend with some clouds and showers first.

    The second half of the weekend promises sunshine and seasonable warmth, but the D.C. region will have to contend with some clouds and showers first.

    Saturday morning will start off mild with temperatures in the lower 70s, only rising a bit by the afternoon. Overcast skies will lead to afternoon showers that are expected to develop from south to north, dropping up to one inch of rainfall. 

    “We’ll get pockets of moderate to heavy rain for the afternoon and evening on Saturday,” 7News First Alert Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson said.

    After the showers clear, Sunday will be drier, with more sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. Humidity will still be felt, but it will be a nicer day to be outside.

    Skies could turn partly cloudy by the late afternoon, Johnson said.

    D.C. police are searching for 18-year-old Naqwan Antonio Lucas. He is wanted on a charge of premeditated first-degree murder while armed, a news release said.

    On June 30, Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, 21, was shot near the Mount Vernon Square Metro station, when a group got out of a vehicle and fired upon another group of people at 7th and M streets. Tarpinian-Jachym was not among the intended targets of the shooting.

    Tarpinian-Jachym, a college student from Granby, Massachusetts, was a congressional intern for Kansas Rep. Ron Estes. He died of his injuries in the hospital on July 1.

    A woman and a 16-year-old boy were also shot.

    Earlier this month, U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro announced the arrests of two teens in the shooting. The other suspects, Jalen Lucas and Kelvin Thomas Jr., both 17, have been charged as adults with first-degree murder.

    A $50,000 reward from D.C. police, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction those involved in the deadly shooting. Anyone with information should call D.C. police at 202-727-9099.
