    Prevent Blindness Ohio brings awareness to eye safety in sports

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Every 13 minutes, an emergency room in the U.S. is treating a sports-related eye injury, according to the National Eye Institute.


    What You Need To Know

    • Water sports, basketball and pickleball have the highest rates of sports-related injuries
    • Blunt trauma and penetrating injuries are the top two concerns for the eyes during sports
    • Eye guards can help prevent eye related injuries

    Sport-related injuries can range from blunt trauma to a penetrating injury. Water sports have the highest rate of injuries due to infection as well blunt trauma, however, for those 15 and older, basketball has the highest rate. Blunt trauma incidents are the most common. These occur when something hits you in the eye. 

    In sports like basketball and water polo, athletes are often reaching for the ball making it easy to get hit with a finger, arm or elbow. This type of injury can cause serious damage, including a broken bone under the eyeball, a broken eyeball, a black eye and a detached retina. 

    Amy Pulles, who serves as the president and CEO of Prevent Blindness Ohio said that eye injuries can leave permanent damage and that it is important to give your eyes the proper protections.  

    “You can get eye injuries that will make the eye not work even with a pair of eyeglasses,” said Pulles. “Say you’ve got an injury in one eye, well, then for the rest of your life, you’ve only got one good eye. You only have one eye that works, so something could happen to that eye, and then you end up being permanently blind.”

    Pulles said the best way to avoid injury is by athletes utilizing eye guards. When purchasing eye guards, here’s what to check for:

    • To ask your eye doctor to fit your prescription inside (for those who wear glasses) 
    • Ask for an anti-fog coating or purchase eye guards with side vents
    • Make sure the guards are following the correct standard for the sport outlined by the American Society for Testing Materials 
    • Make sure the guards have padding or cushion along the brow and bridge of the nose in order to prevent cutting into your skin 

    In addition to the resources offered through Prevent Blindness Ohio, the Ohio Ophthalmological Society provides free eye safety gear through their Superspecs program. Parents and coaches can utilize the organization to receive an array of eye equipment for their athletes for little to no cost.

    College graduates face potential targeting for scams

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Graduation can be one of the happiest days of a student’s life, but it can also make them easy targets for scammers.


    What You Need To Know

    • Scammers will target recent graduates through email, phone or a hoax link
    • Graduates should be weary of people calling about loan forgiveness programs 
    • Employment scams were the number one riskiest scam for ages 18-44

    As graduates gear up for their next opportunity, scammers might target them claiming a former student has an unpaid tuition bill, has been enrolled in a student loan forgiveness program or is being offered a “can’t miss” job opportunity.

    The Better Business of Central Ohio shares some things recent graduates should know to protect themselves. 

    • If a scammer claims to have a loan forgiveness opportunity — graduates should know not to pay any fees upfront and know the ins and outs of their current student loans (interests, payment dates, payment amounts, etc.)

    • If someone reaches out claiming that a former student has unpaid tuition, they’ll often threaten to resend your degree. The BBB suggests calling your school directly if this happens

    • According to the BBB’s 2023 risk report, employment scams were the number one riskiest scam for ages 18 to 44. Indicators that it’s a scam will be a claimed recruiter asking you to pay for training and often want access to personal information. 

    Judy Dollison, who serves as the President of the Central Ohio BBB, said that employment scams can be one of the most dangerous and hard to spot. 

    “Get on the website of that company and see if they’re listing that position on their website,” said Dollison. “If those aren’t listed on their website, then it’s likely a scam. You know, it’s best to go directly to the source and scammers are known to use those real company names, so if you have to, just call the company and verify the information.”

    Dollison said whether it’s a job offer or a claimed loan forgiveness program, recent graduates can always use the BBB website to cross reference if a business or organization is accredited. Recent graduates want to be wary of giving information out to unknown numbers, websites or email addresses. They should also be cautious of what they post on social media because anyone could be looking and tracking. It’s also important to stay cool, calm and collected. If a graduate feels pressured to act within minutes and thinks it’s a scam, it most likely is.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Although Ohioans can now smoke marijuana recreationally, that doesn’t mean they can’t get in trouble at all for using it. 


    What You Need To Know

    • Employers are not required to revise their company drug policy 
    • Ohioans can still get fired if they fail a drug test 
    • It’s unlikely that corporations and organizations would change their drug policy until marijuana becomes legal on a federal level

    Issue 2, which legalizes recreational marijuana, has officially become law, but it doesn’t mean it comes without obstacles. As a citizen-initiated statute, the legislature is free to make provisions on it. Aside from the legal fate of the legislation, there can also be complications with employer policies. 

    “An employer is still well within its rights to still have a workplace program and include marijuana in that, just as if it were still a completely illegal drug,” said Chris Lalak, who has his own firm as a labor attorney. “They are allowed to test for that. They don’t have to accommodate for it, even if there is a medicinal use for it.”

    Ohio is the 24th state to legalize recreational marijuana, but it is still illegal on the federal level. Many corporations and businesses operate on a national or even global scale, which is why many employers have no concern or push to change or modify their drug policies anytime soon.
