That’s why today real tears run down my face … to hear the news that God has taken one of his special creations home… I know God doesn’t make mistakes… But this one hurts like hell… rest up my friend… you will be missed forever… But your music and your impression will be felt for generations to come…. I said, “Put it out. It’s perfect!” Being the #artist he is, I guess he had to explore some ways to make it better. About a year later I heard one of those songs on the radio. • D’Angelo, Grammy-winning R&B singer who became an icon with ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel),’ dies

D’Angelo, the Grammy-winning R&B singer recognized by his raspy yet smooth voice and for garnering mainstream attention with the shirtless “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” music video, has died. He was 51.

The singer, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, died Tuesday after a long bout with cancer, his family said in a statement.

It called him “a shining star of our family and has dimmed his light for us in this life,” adding that they are “eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”

In his music, D’Angelo blended hip-hop grit, emphatic soul and gospel-rooted emotion into a sound that helped spearhead the neo-soul movement of the 1990s. Earlier this year, the Virginia native celebrated the 30th anniversary of his debut studio album “Brown Sugar,” a platinum-selling offering that produced signature hits like “Lady” and the title track. The 1995 album earned him multiple Grammy nominations and cemented him as one of R&B’s most original new voices.

D’Angelo’s sultry vocal style — a mix of raspy texture and church-bred fluidity — set him apart from his peers. That voice became inseparable from the striking visuals of his 2000 single “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” The minimalist, shirtless music video became a cultural touchstone, igniting conversations around artistry, sexuality and vulnerability in Black male representation. The song earned him a Grammy for best male R&B vocal performance and propelled his sophomore album “Voodoo,” topping the Billboard 200 chart and winning the Grammy for best R&B album.

With an idiosyncratic spirit not unlike Prince, D’Angelo’s devotion was always to the craft — not the machinery around it. In a 2000 interview with The Associated Press, he spoke candidly about the cost of chasing commercial success.

“(Musicians) have gotten trapped into that mode of thinking marketable and commercial. That destroys art, that destroys the essence of what it is about,” he said. “You cannot, you cannot work like that. You cannot make music like that. That’s not what this is about.”

That same year, D’Angelo reflected on his need for solitude amid fame: “I used to hang out a lot, but now I’ve become more of a recluse,” he told AP. “I long for just peace and silence.”

Beyond his own catalog, D’Angelo’s artistry shined in collaborations. He memorably duetted with Lauryn Hill on the soulful ballad “Nothing Even Matters,” a highlight of her landmark 1998 album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” He also contributed to The Roots’ 1996 album “Illadelph Halflife” and was part of the supergroup Black Men United, which yielded one song: “U Will Know,” which D’Angelo wrote and co-produced, for the film “Jason’s Lyric” in 1994.

“I remember hearing your music for the first time… I said to myself damn whoever this is they are anointed,” Jamie Foxx said on social media. “Then when I finally got a chance to see you… Like everyone when they saw the most incredible music video of our time… I was blown away… I thought to myself I have to see this person in concert… I had my chance to see you at the house of blues… You came out and got right down to business… Your voice was silky and flawless… I was graciously envious of your style and your swag…”

Years before stepping back from public view, D’Angelo’s life and music were closely intertwined with Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone in the ’90s. The pair met while he was finishing “Brown Sugar” and bonded over their shared Southern roots and deep church upbringing. Stone contributed to the album and later collaborated with him on “Everyday,” a song from her 1999 debut album, “Black Diamond.”

Stone once described D’Angelo as her “musical soul mate,” to the AP in 1999, adding that their working relationship was “’like milk and cereal …. Musically, it was magic. It’s something that I have not been able to do with any other producer or musician.” They had a son together, the artist Swayvo Twain, born Michael Archer Jr.

Stone died earlier this year in a car crash. She was 63.

D’Angelo also has a daughter, Imani Archer, who is also a music artist.

In the years that followed, D’Angelo’s life became as defined by absence as by acclaim. After “Voodoo,” he withdrew from the spotlight for more than a decade, fueling speculation about personal struggles and creative battles. His long-awaited return came in 2014 with “Black Messiah,” credited to D’Angelo and The Vanguard. The urgent and politically charged album that arrived amid nationwide protests and helped usher in a wave of activist music responding to police killings of Black Americans and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart and won him a Grammy for best R&B album, reaffirming his stature as a generational voice. Its standout single, “Really Love,” earned him another Grammy for best R&B song and earned a nomination for record of the year.

In May, D’Angelo withdrew from being a headliner for the 2025 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia due to “an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery (he) had earlier this year,” the artists shared in a statement. D’Angelo said he was advised the performance “could further complicate matters.”

Beyond his biggest singles, D’Angelo’s catalog includes fan favorites like “Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine,” “Cruisin’” and “Devil’s Pie.” His influence stretched far beyond the charts: he inspired a wave of artists including Maxwell, Alicia Keys and Frank Ocean.

The films are produced or directed by well known members of the legal, film and entertainment industries, Bertrand said. In addition to the informative panels which will be held during the day, two new components will be held. On Friday night, Bronze Lens After Dark will debut at the UpTown Comedy Club hosted by comedian/actor Jonathan Slocumb. The next night, Atlanta City Hall will be the site of the Inaugural Filmmakers Sneakers Ball. Bertrand said all of the filmmakers who have ever presented at Bronze Lens are invited.

Cameron Diaz Wants To ‘Normalize Separate Bedrooms’ For Couples – ‘I Have My House, You Have Yours’

    Opinion

    Source: Peacock YouTube

The Hollywood star Cameron Diaz is on a mission to “normalize separate bedrooms” for couples, saying that they should even have different houses.

    Diaz Sounds Off

Diaz, who has been married to the guitarist Benji Madden since 2015, said this while appearing on the “Lipstick on the Rim” podcast on Tuesday.

“We should normalize separate bedrooms,” said Diaz, 51. “To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have a family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in your room, you go sleep in your room. I’m fine.”

“And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations,” she continued.

When Diaz was warned that she was creating a “bad headline,” she immediately brushed off any concerns.

“I’ve already said it,” she explained. “By the way, I don’t feel that way now because my husband is so wonderful. I said that before I got married.”

    Diaz Returns To Acting

Entertainment Tonight reported that Diaz recently returned to acting for the first time in nearly a decade to star with Jamie Foxx in the film Back in Action, which has yet to be released. This was Diaz’s first acting gig since she starred in the 2014 version of Annie.

“It’s like riding a bike,” she said of performing, going on to explain why she took the role, which required her to move her family to London during filming.

“My husband and I made the decision for our family,” she said. “It was really about what our family needed. We had been in COVID, our daughter was three months old when COVID started. She was wanting — we wanted to kind of get out in the world. Like, have to get out in the world kind of thing.”

Diaz went on to say that she and Madden split parenting duties during filming. He would watch their daughter during the day and run his businesses at night, while Diaz would watch their daughter at night and film during the day.

“We were both kinda like, this is a great idea,” she said with a laugh. “But it really was. We had a great time.”

    Diaz Defends Jamie Foxx

During this same interview, Diaz denied rumors that Foxx had made “everything miserable and that I was never gonna make another movie again because of him.” She described Foxx, who she’s worked with on two other films in the past, as being a “cheerleader for the entire crew,” adding that “everybody loves him.”

“Jamie is the best. I love that guy so much. He’s such a special person, and he’s so talented, so much fun,” Diaz said. “We have so much fun on the set with him, and he’s just a professional on every level.”

“I really hate all of the things that were being said about our set,” she continued. “You just want to scream at the top of your lungs, like, ‘What are you talking about?’”

Jamie Foxx Makes First Public Speech Since Mystery Hospitalization: “I Couldn’t Actually Walk”

Nearly eight months after an undisclosed “medical complication” left him hospitalized for weeks, Jamie Foxx emerged on Monday night for his surprise first public appearance.

He was on hand to receive the Vanguard Award for his performance in The Burial at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema and Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements. After an introduction from co-star Jurnee Smollet, Foxx took the stage, where he said, “I couldn’t do that six months ago, I couldn’t actually walk to [the stage]. And I’m not a clone, I’m not a clone. I know a lot of people saying that I was cloned out there”—a joking reference to his Netflix film, They Cloned Tyrone, which was released in June and earned him a Gotham Award nomination last month. “It feels good to be here. I cherish every single minute now, it’s different.”

The 55-year-old Oscar winner added, “I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy because it’s tough when it’s almost over, when you see the tunnel. I saw the tunnel, I didn’t see the light. It was hot in that tunnel too, I don’t know where I was going. ‘Shit, am I going to the right place?’”

Amid his recovery for the medical event, which occurred while Foxx was in Atlanta shooting the movie Back in Action, a Netflix comedy costarring Cameron Diaz (in her first feature film role in almost 10 years), he said, “I have a new respect for life, I have a new respect for my art. I watched so many movies and listened to so many songs trying to have the time go by. Don’t give up on your art, man, don’t give up on your art. When you realize that it could be over like that… I got to tell you don’t give up on your art and don’t let them take the art from you either.”

It was Foxx’s daughter Corinne Foxx who initially shared news of her father’s emergency. “We wanted to share that, my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday. Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery,” read an April 12 Instagram post that has since been removed. “We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers. The family asks for privacy during this time.”

Foxx was first sighted in public again in July, spotted boating on the Chicago River. Later that month, he thanked his family, friends, and fans for their support, saying on Instagram: “I went to hell and back, and my road to recovery has some potholes as well, but I’m coming back.” He also hinted at a return to work. “Every once in a while, I just burst into tears … because it’s been tough, man, I was sick,” Foxx explained, “But now I’ve got my legs under me, so you’re going to see me.”

  • Axl Rose, Jamie Foxx, and Politicians Face Sexual Assault Allegations Ahead of NY’s Filing Deadline

Axl Rose, Jamie Foxx, and Politicians Face Sexual Assault Allegations Ahead of NY’s Filing Deadline

Since 2022, thousands of survivors of sexual assault have used New York’s Adult Survivors Act to seek justice for attacks that the state’s statute of limitations would have previously prevented. But that act—which Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul signed in May 2022—allowed only a year for the new civil suits to be filed. A last-minute surge of lawsuits, many against high-profile actors, musicians, and politicians, was filed just before the Thursday, November 24 deadline.

Some suits involved names already familiar to people who follow misconduct allegations. One example is a lawsuit filed against Bill Cosby Tuesday by a stand-in on The Cosby Show who says the comedian drugged and raped her in the 1980s. Cosby, who’s been accused of sexual assault by over 60 women, was convicted for one such alleged attack in 2018, a conviction overturned in 2021 due to a dispute over an agreement with a prosecutor.

The alleged victim in the case filed this week has not been named; via email, Cosby spokesperson  Andrew Wyatt suggested that the Adult Survivors Act was being abused, telling the Associated Press, “When will it stop and who will be the next man to be victimized by these look-back windows?”

Cuba Gooding Jr. is another actor who’s faced previous allegations: in June, he settled a civil case involving an alleged 2013 rape just minutes before jury selection was to begin, Deadline reported at the time. Now two women say that Gooding groped them in separate incidents at New York restaurants in 2018 and 2019. (The lawsuit can be viewed online.) Both incidents resulted in criminal charges, to which Gooding pleaded guilty.

According to attorney Gloria Allred, who represents both victims, Gooding’s penalties in criminal cases were insufficient, hence the suits. “Our clients were deprived of the justice they sought in the criminal case,” Allred said. “They are now seeking justice and accountability in their civil cases. We are proud of their courage and intend to vigorously fight for them until they win the justice that they deserve.” A representative for Gooding has not responded to Vanity Fair’s request for comment as of publication time.

Sean Combs, who settled one sexual assault suit last week, now faces two more. One involves an alleged 1990s-era rape, Deadline reports. The other, filed by Joi Dickerson-Neal, claims the music mogul drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1991, when she was a student at Syracuse University. He later used images from the incident as “revenge porn,” she claims.

A Combs spokesperson denies the claims, saying, “This last-minute lawsuit is an example of how a well-intentioned law can be misused. Ms. Dickerson’s 32-year-old story is false and not credible. Mr. Combs never assaulted her, and she implicates companies that did not exist. This is purely a money grab and nothing more.” In a statement, Dickerson-Neal’s lawyer, Jonathan Goldhirsh, writes, “Our client has not been able to escape the continuing impact of the harm Combs caused her many years ago. Through the Adult Survivors Act, she can avail herself to the courts to finally seek justice.”

Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose was also named in a Wednesday lawsuit from actress and model Sheila Kennedy. According to the suit, which was reported on by CNN, among others, Rose attacked Kennedy in a New York hotel room in 1989. Kennedy has made these allegations before, including in her 2016 memoir and 2021 sexual assault documentary Look Away, the Guardian notes.

Kennedy has not responded to a request for comment; Rose attorney Alan Gutman says, “Simply put, this incident never happened. Notably, these fictional claims were filed the day before the New York State filing deadline expires … Mr. Rose has no recollection of ever meeting or speaking to the Plaintiff. He has never heard about these fictional allegations prior to today.”

  • Lawsuit accuses actor Jamie Foxx of New York City sexual assault in 2015

Lawsuit accuses actor Jamie Foxx of New York City sexual assault in 2015

A woman has alleged in a lawsuit that actor, singer and comedian Jamie Foxx sexually assaulted her at a rooftop bar in New York in 2015, an incident the actor says “never happened.”

The lawsuit filed Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Manhattan by a woman known in the documents only as Jane Doe alleges that Foxx rubbed her breasts and groped her under her pants against her will.

The suit says she and a friend were seated at a table next to Foxx’s at Catch NYC in 2015. The woman’s asked Foxx for a photo, and the two women took several pictures with him, the suit says. It says that afterward, he began complimenting her “super model body” and told her she looked like the actor Gabrielle Union.

He then grabbed her by the arm and took her to a secluded area, where he put both hands under her crop top and felt her breasts, the suits says. She tried to pull away from Foxx as he reached into her pants with his hands and touched her genitals, the suit also alleges.

When the woman’s friend found them, he stopped and the women walked away, the suit says.

In a statement provided to CBS News Thursday, a spokesperson for Foxx said “the alleged incident never happened.”

“In 2020, this individual filed a nearly identical lawsuit in Brooklyn,” the statement read. “That case was dismissed shortly thereafter. The claims are no more viable today than they were then. We are confident they will be dismissed again. And once they are, Mr. Foxx intends to pursue a claim for malicious prosecution against this person and her attorneys for re-filing this frivolous action.”

The woman is seeking damages to be determined at trial, the suit says.

The lawsuit was one of many filed this week under a temporary New York law, the Adult Survivors Act, that allows adult victims to sue over alleged sexual attacks that previously would have been outside the statute of limitations. The law expired after Thursday.

Rapper and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs was sued last week in federal court by singer Singer Casandra Ventura, who performs under the name Cassie, accusing Combs of rape and physical abuse during their relationship, which lasted from about 2007 to 2018.

The two sides reached a settlement one day after the lawsuit was filed.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly.

  • Jamie Foxx Denies Sexual Assault Accusations In “Frivolous” Lawsuit – Update

Jamie Foxx Denies Sexual Assault Accusations In “Frivolous” Lawsuit – Update

UPDATED 11/23 with Foxx’s statement: Jamie Foxx has hit back at a lawsuit filed Wednesday in New York, in which he is accused of a sexual assault that allegedly happened in 2015.

“The alleged incident never happened. In 2020, this individual filed a nearly identical lawsuit in Brooklyn. That case was dismissed shortly thereafter,” a spokesperson for Foxx said Thursday. “The claims are no more viable today than they were then. We are confident they will be dismissed again. And once they are, Mr. Foxx intends to pursue a claim for malicious prosecution against this person and her attorneys for re-filing this frivolous action.”

In the lawsuit, the 55-year-old Oscar winner (real name Eric Marlon Bishop) has been accused of placing his hands on an unidentified woman’s waist, then moving them under her top. He then allegedly began rubbing the plaintiff’s breasts, dragging her to a secluded area of the rooftop at Catch NYC & Roof, where he touched other areas of her body.

The case was filed under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which provides a one-year window for sexual assault plaintiffs to file civil claims, regardless of the statute of limitations. That window closes on Thursday and has led to a flurry of lawsuits claiming sexual assaults.

Read the complete court documents here.

Foxx won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the film Ray, winning an Academy Award, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Golden Globe Award.

The lawsuit claims the incident in question began when a friend of the plaintiff asked Foxx for a photo. The lawsuit said Foxx “seemed intoxicated at the time,” and said the plaintiff looked like Gabrielle Union, complimenting her on a “supermodel body” and her scent.

When Foxx escalated his alleged physical assault, court papers claim the plaintiff tried to get away. The alleged assault finally halted when the plaintiff’s friend rushed to her aid.

The plaintiff claims to have sought medical treatment and suffered pain as well as emotional distress “‘”as a result of the “sexual assault, abuse, assault and battery.”

The lawsuit names Foxx and Catch, as well as its employees, and seeks compensation and punitive damages.

Foxx’s reps have not commented on the lawsuit.

  • Jamie Foxx Sued For Alleged 2015 Sexual Assault In New York

Jamie Foxx Sued For Alleged 2015 Sexual Assault In New York

Jamie Foxx is at the center of a lawsuit ahead of the holidays. On Wednesday, a woman listed as Jane Doe accused the actor of sexual assault in 2015.

According to Varietythe woman said Jamie took her to a secluded corner of the Catch rooftop bar in New York. Once there, she alleges Foxx “rubbed her breasts and groped her under her pants against her will,” per the outlet.

She’s seeking compensation for “physical and emotional injuries, anxiety, distress, embarrassment, and economic harm” as a result of the assault, per CNN. However, the amount is not specified.

Lawsuit Alleges Jamie Foxx Assault Began With A Photo Request

The suit says the plaintiff and a friend had a table next to Jamie Foxx and the bar owner, Mark Birnbaum. At about 1 a.m. local time, the woman’s friend asked Jamie for a photo. He agreed and snapped several pictures with the friend.

Then, Jamie Foxx allegedly turned his attention to the plaintiff and fired some compliments. He reportedly compared her looks to Gabrielle Union and commented, “Wow, you have that supermodel body” and “You smell so good.”

Following the compliments, the woman claims Jamie Foxx led her by the arm to the more secluded area. The plaintiff was reportedly dressed in a crop top. She says Jamie groped her breasts under the top, which caught her by surprise. When she tried to step away, she alleged Foxx slid his hands into her pants and “put his fingers on and in Plaintiff’s vagina and anus.”

Lawsuit documents claim that a security guard witnessed Jamie’s groping but did not step in. The actor allegedly stopped touching her and walked when the woman’s friend came to find her.

The woman is also suing the venue’s parent company, Catch Hospitality Group, and other related entities for “negligent hiring, training and supervision,” per CNN.

Woman Filed Lawsuit Against Jamie Under New York’s Adult Survivors Act

Following the alleged assault, the woman says she felt sore and had to seek medical treatment as a result.

The lawsuit was filed under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which provided a one-year window for victims to file sexual abuse claims that might’ve been tossed out due to statute of limitations. The deadline to file lawsuits under the act expires today (Nov. 23), and the lawsuit against Jamie was filed on Wednesday (Nov. 22).

Jamie Foxx has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. In late September, he was spotted in the company of his rumored girlfriend in Mexico.

Diddy was another high-profile celebrity who recently faced a lawsuit under the Survivors Act. Cassie, his former girlfriend of about ten years and  Bad Boy Records artist, accused Diddy of sexual assault, abuse, and sex trafficking one week before the act expired. Both parties settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount less than 48 hours later.

Jamie Foxx accused of sexually assaulting woman in New York restaurant – National | Globalnews.ca

Actor Jamie Foxx has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman while dining at a New York City restaurant in 2015.

A lawsuit against the Django Unchained star was filed on Monday with the New York State Supreme Court, according to Variety.

In the legal filing, the accuser, identified only as Jane Doe, claimed Foxx led her to a “secluded” area of the Catch NYC restaurant and groped her. The woman alleged Foxx, 55, “intentionally and without consent used force” to touch her breasts and genitals.

She said Foxx appeared “intoxicated” at the time.

As news of the lawsuit broke, Foxx denied the allegations against him.

“The alleged incident never happened,” a representative for Foxx told Page Six. “In 2020, this individual filed a nearly identical lawsuit in Brooklyn. That case was dismissed shortly thereafter.”

“The claims are no more viable today than they were then. We are confident they will be dismissed again,” the spokesperson concluded.

Jane Doe claimed she and a friend were at a table next to Foxx and Mark Birnbaum, the owner of Catch NYC.

The woman claimed she and her friend asked Foxx for a photo together before he allegedly assaulted her. Foxx agreed to take a photo and complimented the complainant, saying she had a “supermodel body” and looked like Gabrielle Union, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit states Jane Doe experienced “physical and emotional injuries, anxiety, distress, embarrassment and economic harm” as a result of the incident. She is seeking an unspecified amount of compensation.

Jane Doe is also suing the parent company of Catch NYC, Catch Hospitality Group. She alleged a security guard at the restaurant witnessed Foxx’s assault her but did not intervene.

Other business-related people have been named as defendants in allegations of negligent hiring practices, training and inadequate supervision.

Catch Hospitality Group has not released a statement about the claims.

The lawsuit against Foxx is one of many New York-based sexual assault cases currently filed against celebrities. The allegations come as part of the New York Adult Survivors Act, which in May 2022 created a one-year window for adult survivors of sexual assault to file a legal claim, even if the statute of limitations has expired. The window to file a lawsuit against an alleged abuser began on Nov. 24, 2022, and will end on Friday.

Actor Cuba Gooding Jr. and Axl Rose of the band Guns N’ Roses have also been accused of sexual assault under the legislation this week.

In May, Foxx suffered what his family described as a “medical complication” and was hospitalized. The actor never disclosed the nature of what happened to him. At the time of his hospitalization, he was in Atlanta filming Netflix movie Back in Action with fellow actors Cameron Diaz and Glenn Close.

TMZ reports that a woman has accused the Oscar winner of rubbing her breasts and touching her privates at Catch NYC & Roof.

In the new lawsuit, Jane Doe alleges that the actor, 55, was seemingly intoxicated at the time and complimented her when her friend asked Foxx if he’d take a photo with her and the plaintiff.

In the suit, Doe alleges the seemingly intoxicated actor said, “Sure, baby anything for you” before allegedly telling her, “Wow, you have that supermodel body.”

Doe says that he complimented her perfume and told her that she looked like Gabrielle Union before reportedly taking her to a corner of the rooftop and “touching her while a security guard and others looked on” before walking away.

TMZ notes that in the docs, the plaintiff claims Foxx then allegedly “slid his hand into her pants and put his fingers on and in her vagina and anus” before the plaintiff’s friend came over and saw what was happening allegedly causing the actor to stop.

  • Behind Jamie Foxx’s Brilliant, Wild Performance in ‘The Burial’

Behind Jamie Foxx’s Brilliant, Wild Performance in ‘The Burial’

Maggie Betts may be known as a great director of actors, but when it came to working with Jamie Foxx for her new film The Burial, she found the best strategy was to get out of the way and watch him go. “You couldn’t possibly direct him anyway, because he’s such an insanely talented person—almost frighteningly talented,” she says on this week’s Little Gold Men (listen below). “He’s an improv guy at heart. He’s literally going to do what he feels in the moment. He doesn’t like to rehearse. Every take is different. He’ll ask for little things—but he’s launched and flying from the minute you call ‘action.’”

That energy is plainly apparent in The Burial (streaming Friday on Prime Video), an old-school star vehicle that sees Foxx (Ray) tear into one of the best roles of his career. Adapted from a New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr, the courtroom drama set in mid-1990s Mississippi stars Foxx as real-life personal injury lawyer Willie E. Gary, who begins representing the crusty funeral-home owner Jeremiah O’Keefe (Tommy Lee Jones) against the takeover efforts of a ruthless acquisition company run by Raymond Loewen (Bill Camp). Betts peppers her throwback crowdpleaser with flashy costumes, legal hijinks, epic speeches, and a familiar clash of Davids and Goliaths—one that gradually lays bare the grave racial and class disparities in the American South, if always with a light touch.

Foxx circled the film before Betts signed on, and he was part of what attracted her to the project. The Burial is about as different in shape as you could get from Betts’s previous feature, the severe nun drama Novitiate, aside from one factor: Both center on explosive performances from Oscar winners. In the former movie, that honor went to Melissa Leo. Here, it goes to Foxx. “I grew up loving Paul Thomas Anderson movies,” she says, films that are “just on the verge of camp—still in the world of reality, but a little B-ish too. It’s my favorite thing about [his movies]…so I kind of encourage that, which I think [actors] like because their instinct is to go for realism.”

Foxx’s wildly fun portrayal of Gary seems, at times, to speak to the performer’s roots in stand-up. Betts would let him and his ensemble, also including Succession alum Alan Ruck as Gary’s reluctant partner on the case, Mike Allred, run take after take without intervention before gently offering some notes. “I kind of let them figure it out,” Betts says. “When you fill the room with actors who really love improv and are very naturally funny, amazing things happen. But particularly with Jamie and Alan Ruck—their takes were nuts.”

One actor less accustomed to improv? Foxx’s colead Tommy Lee Jones, which made for an intriguing dynamic that extended to their characters’ relationship. While Foxx doesn’t even care for rehearsal, Jones spoke with Betts via Zoom for over a dozen hours, dissecting the script line by line. “He wanted to discuss every word of it. He’s like, ‘So the word the here, what did you mean by that?’”

  • Jamie Foxx’s Dating History Includes Several Major Stars

Jamie Foxx’s Dating History Includes Several Major Stars

Foxx’s longest relationship in the public eye was with Holmes. A year after the actor had split from her then-husband Tom Cruise, Holmes was reportedly spotted dancing with Foxx in the Hamptons in August 2013, per People. However, their relationship wasn’t confirmed until March 2015. An insider told People that Foxx and Holmes “have been spending time together for well over a year,” but their relationship wasn’t “serious.” Around the same time, a photograph surfaced of the pair seemingly holding hands at Foxx’s home studio.

That May, Foxx appeared to deny he was dating Holmes in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I guess some knucklehead person who was here hit us with the phone cam,” he said of their viral photo together. “I guess they are trying to get money for whatever. It’s amazing what people will do to sell you out.”

In a January 2016 interview with More (via ET), Holmes was also asked about her dating life, but she refused to give any details by saying, “That’s not something I want to answer.”

Despite the stars repeatedly shutting down dating rumors, Foxx and Holmes continued to be romantically linked. In fact, in September 2017, they were even spotted taking a romantic stroll on a beach in Malibu.

Since then, Foxx and Holmes appeared to get gradually more comfortable being seen together in public. In January 2018, the stars sat next to each other during a pre-Grammy gala. Over the course of the night, they were photographed smiling, laughing, and whispering into each other’s ears. After six years of dating rumors, Foxx and Holmes finally made their red carpet debut together at the 2019 Met Gala.

However, that August, rumors spread that Foxx and Holmes had called it quits.

Queeni Glenn, who was in the city to support her sister, who is battling breast cancer, told CBS Chicago she was riding a pedicab and didn’t realize she had dropped her bag. That’s when Foxx became her savior.

“I think my bag had to fall out of the carriage in some kind of weird way. I didn’t even know it was gone until a black SUV rolled up beside me, and the guy rolled the window down and proceeded to step out of the car,” she said. “But as he was stepping out, I realized that’s my bag. At the same time, I realized that — that’s Jamie Foxx!”

She walked over to Foxx, who handed her the bag. “A pleasant smile and I just thanked him and, I don’t know, it was just like, what? He looks good, and he said he was good. I asked him, is he feeling good? And he said, ‘I feel good.’”
