Dr. Karri Turner Bryant and Pastor Jamal Bryant recently opened up about the controversy surrounding the nude-illusion gown Dr. Karri wore at the annual UNCF Atlanta Mayor’s Masked Ball during an appearance on The Tamron Hall Show, with Dr. Bryant reminding dress-dragging Christians that “there is no book” for the title of First Lady.

As previously reported, the drama started in late December when Dr. Karri attended the prestigious event wearing a lacy black gown that gave the illusion she was completely nude underneath. Social media and some members of the church community were quick to weigh in, arguing that the outfit was “too revealing.”

But as Dr. Karri explained to Tamron Hall, she wasn’t trying to start a fire; she was simply dressing for herself and her husband.

“People have said, ‘Oh, you know, she knew it would get this reaction.’ My ego is not that big. I don’t dress for people. I dress for myself and for my husband,” she said. “I am a wife? Yeah, I’m a wife. I’m a daughter. I have a doctorate. I’m a professor. There are plenty of things that I do, and the challenge is, we often want to see a woman be one-dimensional. ‘I am multi-dimensiona’l,” she continued. “I carry multiple titles.”

Conservative pastor Patrick Wooden likened the gown to a “$2 whore.”

Not everyone in the church agreed. Conservative Bishop Patrick Wooden of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ took aim during a recent sermon, calling Dr. Karri’s dress a “$2 whore” look and criticizing Pastor Jamal Bryant, who purchased the gown, for “demeaning” his wife.

“There is nothing classy about that. There’s nothing modest about that,” Bishop Wooden said.

Despite the harsh words, Dr. Karri remained unbothered. During her interview with Tamron Hall, she made it clear that she plans to continue being unapologetically herself.

“Now what you choose to call me on whatever day is fine for whatever that might be,” she said. “But I think that there is this idea that a woman can only be one thing, and once I happen to marry a pastor, I happen to fall in love with a man who is a pastor, right? And so with that came the title of First Lady. But there is no book for that. There is no manual for what that looks like. And I have decided that the title does not define me. I define what the title is.”

Pastor Jamal Bryant also addressed the backlash, calling the comments “painful.” At first, he debated whether to respond publicly.

“I don’t use my platform to preach against other preachers when there’s so much that’s going on in the world,” he told Hall. “It was very enraging and irritating, and at the end of the day, I had to think to myself to respond to that. Does that grow the church or does it diminish it? And so at that moment I had to separate my humanity and really deal with my divine call.”

In the end, Pastor Bryant did step in to defend his wife. As previously reported, he took to the pulpit on New Year’s Eve to set the record straight.

“The dress was not see-through, the dress was flesh-color,” he said. “I needed to set the record straight: I bought the dress! And I like it. I don’t care whether you like it or not, she ain’t married to y’all. She married to me.”

The pastor also pointed out that critics were missing the bigger picture: the prestigious event they attended helped raise $4 million for the United Negro College Fund.

As the government shutdown drags on, millions of Americans are bracing for potential disruptions to critical programs — including SNAP benefits. Starting November 1st, those who rely on the program could see their assistance paused, leaving families scrambling to put food on the table. Amid the uncertainty, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church Pastor, Jamal Bryant, is urging his community to step up in a different way. All this unfolds as DoorDash pledges meals and states take the Trump administration to court.

Pastor Bryant Shifts $1M Fundraiser To Feed Families

According to reports, this past Sunday was supposed to be a big fundraising day for the Georgia church. As they aimed to raise $1 million, Pastor Bryant made the decision to pause the initiative until the shutdown ends. In a sentimental message, the Georgia pastor shared:

“The congregation is supposed to be sensitive to the needs of the community, knowing that people are literally just trying to keep their heads above water. We’re opening up our arms and opening up our hearts at the same time.”

Additionally, the church normally hands out groceries every other Saturday to around 1,500 people. But, this weekend they’re planning to step it up to serve 2,000. His decision comes as more than 40 million Americans receiving SNAP benefits may lose them in just a few days. As previously reported, the USDA has confirmed that no emergency assistance will be provided for relief. For communities already struggling, the church’s move shows how local support can fill gaps when the system falls short.

24 States Sue Trump Admin Over SNAP Suspension

A massive coalition of 24 states plus D.C. is taking the Trump administration to court over the suspension of SNAP benefits. Big-name states like California, New York, and Pennsylvania are asking a federal judge in Massachusetts to step in. They’re also asking the judge to make the Department of Agriculture continue SNAP benefits for November, even if it means using contingency funds. With over 25 million people in these states alone relying on SNAP, officials are calling the suspension not just unfair, but unlawful.

In their lawsuit, the states warn that cutting off food stamps could have dire consequences and negative health impacts on children. “Shutting off SNAP benefits will cause deterioration of public health and well-being,” the filing reads. The states involved in the suit stretch coast to coast, including Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, and Illinois. Additionally, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, and more are included in the pact — making it one of the biggest legal challenges to the administration’s food aid cuts yet.

DoorDash Offers 1 Million Free Meals Amid EBT Freeze

The government shutdown threatens SNAP benefits for millions of families, including 21 million kids. Furthermore, it leaves countless at risk of going hungry while food banks struggle to keep up. DoorDash is stepping in with an Emergency Food Response, offering free delivery for its Project DASH partners. The company is also waiving fees on roughly 300,000 SNAP orders, adding to the 135 million meals it has already helped deliver. “No one should go hungry in America—period,” said Max Rettig, DoorDash VP. Meanwhile, Eric Mitchell of the Alliance to End Hunger added that while this helps temporarily, full SNAP benefits must be restored immediately to protect millions of people in need.

  • Pastor Jamal Bryant Christianly Confesses That ‘Narcissim’ Led Him To Father A Child Outside Of Marriage With Ex-Wife Gizelle Bryant

Pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church didn’t hold back when Kandi Burruss brought up his headline-making 2016 scandal on her podcast Speak On It, openly dishing deets on his divorce from #RHOP’s Gizelle Bryant.

With surprising candor, the 54-year-old pastor revealed that he felt like a complete “narcissist” when news of his fathering a child with a parishioner at his former church while still married to Gizelle came to light.

“Poverty is not always money. Poverty is the mismanagement of time, and, so, people make priority what should be secondary. You have to be very careful on the different forms of narcissism,” Bryant told Kandi during their raw interview about the consequences that unfolded after he admitted to welcoming his son, John Karston Bryant, with a church member named Latoya Shawntee Odom in 2016 (jump to the 30:00 minute mark.)

“Narcissism is a fancy word for selfish..I wasn’t thinking on how will this affect my daughter? How would this affect my marriage? How does it affect my ministry? It was just, ‘What will this do for me?’”

The fallout from the infidelity confession made Pastor Jamal Bryant experience suicidal ideations.

Bryant shared with Kandi that his career was soaring when the scandal broke. He had grown his congregation to 10,000 members at Empowerment Temple in Baltimore—the church he founded in 2000—and had been happily married to Gizelle since 2002. But at the peak of his ministry, the revelation of his infidelity sent shockwaves through both his personal and professional life, threatening to unravel everything he had built. Gizelle filed for divorce in 2009 due to his infidelity, though they reconciled in 2019. The former couple share three daughters.

Reflecting on the fallout, Bryant said he wore a “tattoo of shame” for years, a feeling that hit home when a TSA agent in Fort Lauderdale quietly told him, “I heard about the baby. Keep your head up,” after the story made national headlines. His congregation also began to “shrink,” following the news. The backlash was so intense, he admitted, that he struggled with suicidal thoughts during the dark moment.

“I felt like the walls were coming in and I didn’t have anywhere to go.”

When Kandi asked the Baptist pastor how he made it through the storm, Bryant said flat out: “Prayer was my oxygen.”

    He continued:

“I needed to be in an alternative space. When you have to disconnect from the reality you’re in, where you almost have to have an outer body experience, and step back and see yourself.”

The religious leader, who joined New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in 2018, said ultimately he learned to forgive himself.

“What I did is not who I am, and it’s easier said in a healthier, healed, whole space than while you’re hemorrhaging. In that hemorrhaging space, I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to breathe again.”

Despite efforts to repair their relationship, Gizelle and the pastor ended their marriage for good in 2021. Bryant later tied the knot with Dr. Karri Turner in 2024. Notably, during BravoCon 2023, Gizelle opened up about why she finally decided to walk away from the relationship with the well-known pastor.

“He and I have known each other for 20-plus years. We have three beautiful daughters. At the same time … he was in a different mental space,” the reality TV vet said at the time. “So I felt like if ever [we] were going to get the family back together, that was the time to try. It didn’t work out. But I think I would have regretted not trying.”
