QAnon Shaman cozies up with Republicans at Arizona Capitol

Jacob Chansley, more commonly known as the QAnon Shaman, was a guest of Glendale Republican state Sen. Anthony Kern at the Arizona State Capitol recently, allowing Chansley access to areas where the public is generally prohibited.

Chansley is known for being one of the most recognizable members of the crowd that breached the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 while wearing a horned hat, face paint and no shirt. His actions that day led to a 41-month prison sentence, a portion of which he served at the Federal Correctional Institute in Safford. He was released early in March to a half-way house, and returned to his home in the Valley on probation in May 2023. Chansley sought to vacate the ruling, citing dubious reporting by former Fox anchor Tucker Carlson.

On Feb. 20, Kern introduced Chansley and others as his guests at the Arizona Senate. Kern himself is tied to the events of Jan. 6 as he was photographed in areas of the Capitol that rioters breached. Kern has stated on multiple occasions that he never entered the Capitol itself. Other senators, like Goodyear Republican Janae Shamp, were also present that day.

“I was looking at (Kern’s) guests and thinking ‘wow that guy looks familiar,’” Sen. Priya Sundareshan, D-Tucson, told the Arizona Mirror, saying it didn’t hit her at first that Chansley was the infamous QAnon Shaman.

According to Sundareshan, Chansley was given access to the Senate lounge, an area that the public is generally not allowed, where the Jan. 6 attendee spoke with other lawmakers like Flagstaff Republican Sen. Wendy Rogers.

Prior to his role in the Jan. 6 riot, Chansley was familiar to those at the Arizona Capitol for his activism at political events and demonstrations where he’d be dressed in his “shaman” attire along with a sign that read “Q Sent Me.”

In its simplest form, the complex and damaging QAnon conspiracy theory alleges that a cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles are running a global sex-trafficking ring, control world governments and are trying to bring down former President Donald Trump — who is himself single-handedly dismantling the cabal.

Sundareshan said the “normalcy” with which Chansley was addressed by members of the Senate was “jarring” and said she hopes that it doesn’t lead to Republicans inviting other Jan. 6 rioters to the Arizona Senate.

“I hope we don’t see a whole parade of others coming but he is, of course, the most prominent symbol,” Sundareshan said.

Chansley is attempting a run for Arizona Congressional District 8 as a Libertarian, a seat for which Kern is also looking to run as a Republican.

Chansley gave testimony at a Senate Appropriations Committee meeting on Feb. 20, and commented on Senate Bill 1480, which raises the annual salary of the governor, secretary of state, state treasurer and attorney general. Chansley opposed the bill, saying that politicians have not earned a raise. The committee approved the measure in a 5-4-1 vote, but it has since stalled in the Senate.

The Mirror reached out to Kern and Chansley for comment but did not receive a reply.

Sundareshan said that Chansley’s appearance is a “stark reminder that (Democrats and Republicans) are kind of taking our cues from very different places.”

  • Elon Musk Doubles Down On Jan. 6 Denial With Defense Of ‘QAnon Shaman’

Elon Musk Doubles Down On Jan. 6 Denial With Defense Of ‘QAnon Shaman’

Twitter overlord Elon Musk showed sympathy on Friday for the Capitol rioter dubbed the “QAnon Shaman,” in the billionaire’s latest effort to downplay the deadly events of Jan. 6, 2021.

“Free Jacob Chansley,” Musk tweeted to his 130 million followers, apparently suggesting the rioter’s sentence was unwarranted.

Chansley had earned his nickname by raiding the U.S. Capitol bare-chested on Jan. 6 with a furry Viking-style hat and face paint, carrying an American flag zip-tied to a spear.

For making threats and disrupting Congress as its members attempted to certify the results of the 2020 election, Chansley got 41 months in prison, or just shy of three and a half years.

He is one of 1,000 people to be arrested for their participation in the attack on the Capitol and the law enforcement officers defending it. More than 300 people have been charged with physically assaulting or resisting officers or employees.

Jacob Chansley, right, expressing his feelings in the halls of Congress on Jan. 6, 2021.

Yet Musk has recently begun to promote the false idea — pushed by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Fox News host Tucker Carlson and other conservatives — that the Capitol attack was actually a mostly peaceful event.

In a segment last week that was criticized by U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger, among others, Carlson used selectively edited footage to make the breach seem far tamer than it truly was.

Musk promoted the segment repeatedly on his Twitter page with credulous commentary.

On Friday, Musk reacted to a video clip that showed Chansley using a bullhorn to read a tweet sent by former President Donald Trump at around 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 6.

“Respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue,” Trump wrote, as read out by Chansley.

This, combined with other footage that showed Chansley walking alongside law enforcement through the halls of the Capitol, seemed to absolve him in Musk’s mind.

“Chansley got 4 years in prison for a non-violent, police-escorted tour!?” the Twitter and Tesla CEO marveled. (The sentence was less than four years.) In another tweet, Musk claimed Chansley “was falsely portrayed in the media as a violent criminal who tried to overthrow the state and who urged others to commit violence.”

“I’m not part of MAGA, but I do believe in fairness of justice,” he added.

Chansley pleaded guilty to charges of civil disorder, disorderly and disruptive conduct, violent entry to a building, and other counts at his November 2021 sentencing hearing. Prosecutors said he pushed past a police barrier to enter the Capitol and made his way to the Senate floor, where he shouted “Mike Pence is a fucking traitor” from the dais, and led other protesters in a chant against “all the tyrants, the communists, and the globalists.”

He also left a note: “It’s Only A Matter of Time. Justice Is Coming!”
